NBC’s Bob Costas used his halftime commentary on “Sunday Night Football” to call for stricter gun control in the wake of the murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher.
In a 90-second statement, Costas quoted Fox Sports writer Jason Whitlock:
In the aftermath of the nearly unfathomable events in KC, that most mindless of sports cliches was heard yet again: Something like this really puts it all in perspective … You want some actual perspective on this? Well a bit of it comes from the Kansas City-based writer Jason Whitlock, with whom I do not always agree, but who today said it so well that we may as well just quote or paraphrase from the end of his article. “Our current gun culture,” Whitlock wrote, “ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead. Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it. … If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would still be alive today.”
Costas surely knew his remarks would be inflammatory, and they were. Online reaction was swift, with many expressing outrage that he used a nationally televised football game to express his personal views. Others praised Costas for taking a stand. What do you think?

2010 Stats on firearm related homicide is 9,369 in the US. Same year has 10,228 in DUI fatalities. So when do we reinstate the Volstead Act? Or ban cars that go over 20 mph? Where are all the “celebrities” screaming for alcohol control. Same as it always is. some TV personality blow-hard thinking he knows what’s best for everyone.

The remarks made by Bob Costas were totally uncalled for. A meaningless monday night football game where you don’t expect anything political…just football, no thinking involved. Enter Bob Costas, agree with what he said or not is not the point, Monday night football is not and should not be a forum for gun control nor anything of that nature. He had no right to say it in that forum. I suppose that if you jump off a bridge you can say if it weren’t for the bridge the guy would still be alive? If it weren’t for the knife the guy would still be alive? You get my point. Too many people are quick to blame guns for tragedy, it is not the gun and never will be the gun that is at fault…it is the stupidity of those who have them. You’ll never hear the networks comment on how many lives good citizens with guns have saved, will you?? I have a gun and will use it to protect me and more importantly my family weather Mr. Costas approves or not!! Mr.Belcher is the only one responsible for what he did, not the masses. One more thought, if he wanted to take his own life then fine, but why the life of another just because he had issues!!

If a big ass football player gets mad at his girlfriend and decides to strike out, he didn’t need a gun to kill her. Any random object within his reach slammed against her head could have done the same job. The availability of guns was not the problem here.

@To Tell the Truth and any other political junkie, Please be real about your comments… I have several guns and ready to use it to protect my family, I am a female and also voted for President Obama. This is not about politics. It’s about an opinion and someone’s fear of the other person on the opposite side of a GUN!!! Nothing more, Nothing Less!!!

Seriously Bob, the gun didn’t do anything! It was the idiot behind the gun that did the crime and if he hadn’t had a gun handy he would have used a knife, blunt object or his fists to do the deed. The culture that contributed to to his poor judgement was the culture of his family, neighborhood, and corporate America. You raise a kid in a home without strong family ties and responsibility, you’ll end up with a kid that doesn’t value family. You raise a kid in a home where the family entertainment is TV shows, movies and video games where violence, rape, drugs and murder are viable options and guess what, kids like water will always take the path of least effort. No it wasn’t the gun that committed the crime, it was the influences in his life that told him use of the gun was a viable option. You want to protect your family and loved ones – don’t ban guns – ban idiots!

“Guns all around us” … REALLY !!! That’s the problem. I attended a gun show last weekend. There were 400 vendors, several thousand guns of all types, thousands of men, women, and yes, children at the two day event. Guess what… not even a paper cut. That should have been the perfect place for all hell to break loose. Not even a bloody nose.

This isn’t the 1700’s anymore. The days of militias are long gone. When more deaths are the result of ignorant misuse vs protection etc, why wouldn’t we want to explore ways to make America safer?
Even if cities, which have higher populations than their rural suburban neighbors were to adopt gun control laws, we would see a dramatic decrease in deaths.

If you want to reduce deaths then eliminate drinking alcohol and you won’t have drunk driving accidents which kill more people than handguns.

If this tragedy had been caused by the an accidental discharge of a firearm by an irresposible person then Mr. Costas might have a point. However, Mr Belcher was intent on killing his girl friend and if he hadn’t had a gun, he would have found something else to use or strangled s her.

Love these people who say “….I guess you’ve never had to defend your home or family…..”. Have you? Of course not. The situation where someone actually goes to do someone harm, and that person lawfully pulls out a registered gun and defends himslef happens about 4 times a year. It’s the lamest rationale I’ve ever heard.

Well Mr Costas, what if subsequent investigations show that Mr Belcher sufferd from the effects of repeated head injuries and concussion syndrome from playing football? Perhaps we should outlaw football. Why don’t you get on your bully pulpit and preach against the barbarism of what is little more than modern day gladiators beating one another to the point that their average professional life expectancy is about five years, and depends upon a collegiate feeder system that is the closest thing to indentured servitude that has existed in thsi country since the 19th century? Oh, I forgot, that is the multi-billion dollar sugar teat from which you suckle. You sir, are a shallow thinker and a hypocrite.

This isn’t the 1800’s anymore. The days of militias are over. While everyone has the constitutional right to ‘bear arms’ our founding fathers did not have semi-automatic rifles or high powered hand guns in mind when scripting the second amendment.
Comparing gun deaths to spoons making people fat is unequivocal and makes any idiot using the comparison instantly lose credit. The facts are simple, America is number one in fire arm deaths out of any other first world country.

Okay, fine. You want to take the position that a gun cannot cause behavior. The person doing the behavior is 100% responsible. No one else and no object can be blamed.
Just remember that the next time you hear someone blaming “liberal policy” for all the people who are on food stamps and failing to be self-reliant. Remember that the next time you hear someone condemning violent video games or violent porn.
And check yourself the next time you are thinking about being in support of laws against heroin and crack cocaine. After all, the responsible users should not be punished because of the irresponsible users. ( hey, it’s YOUR maxim. )

582 homicides in Japan in 2008. 11 by firearm. The population is unarmed there, but there are not mass killings or a high murder rate. Criminals there are not taking advantage of the fact that Japanese citizens are unarmed.
We have a two headed problem here in the US 1) we are a violent society and 2) gun ownership is relatively easy. We need to address both issues here.

People need weapons to defend themselved from totalitarians like costas. Making weapons illegal would certainly not make all of them disappear. It would make freedom disappear though. His discussion is totally irrelevant, the right to bear arms CANNOT be taken away.

Mr. Costas, good mental health and good judgement can’t be legislated. The average police response time, in spite of the fact they are great Americans that try to protect, puts them outside the influence/decision cycle requires that we be able to defend ourselves against criminals and unstable persons. More persons die from pertusis, asthma, drunk driving, and drowning. A gun us a very efficient killing device. However, it is inarguable, that in cities with the most restrictive guns laws you find the highest rates of gun violence because the crime rates are highest there- criminals use guns to perpetuate their violence. Taking away legally registered guns does NOT prevent violence- statistically born out by study of gun control history. Legal gun owners are statistically one of the most law abiding groups. Mr. Costas you make your living talking about something you have never done. However, it is the millions of Americans that have carried and will carry guns that allow you to say stupid things in an inappropriate venue. Evil exists and until Jesus returns- “We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm”. I carried a gun in uniform for 30 years, did nine tours of combat, and I love peace more than most- that is EXACTLY why I carry a weapon. I can’t prevent crime of mental illness but I can protect those I see threatened by it. Step away from your handlers and limo’s – the world is a dangerous place. We must be protected by each other, our great law enforcement folks can’t protect us everywhere at all times. I applaud your right to speak out but you are seriously misguided.
