Herschel Walker to open sports bar in Athens

Herschel Walker’s coming back.

No, unfortunately he won’t be available to play Saturday against Alabama in the SEC Championship Game — his eligibility is all used up. But the legendary running back is opening a sports bar in Athens.

Herschel’s Famous 34 Pub & Grill will open at 320 East Clayton Street downtown, which is already awash in bars and restaurants. None of them, however, has the marketing power of being owned by the famous No. 34, whom many consider to be the greatest running back in the history of college football.

According to the bar’s Facebook page, the restaurant “honors the magic of Herschel Walker and the number 34 with a great mix of American favorites like grilled steaks, burgers, seafood, signature sandwiches and fresh salads, plus a selection of 34 variations of wings and 34 craft beers. Join us on exciting journey from renovation to grand opening!”

In a statement Wednesday, Walker said, “We are excited to open the first Herschel’s Famous 34 Pub & Grill in Athens where I have many fond memories of my time at the University of Georgia.”

The Athens Banner-Herald reported that the bar, which will feature six 60-inch televisions, plans a three-day kickoff in late January, before the Super Bowl.

Herschel Walker USED TO BE a Christian who stood for something and did not put poisons and impurities like alcohol into his body that he referred to as a “temple” he wanted to keep clean.

Days gone by…

What kind of chicks do you think Bobby Petrino will be able to get at Herschel’s bar when he uses that Arkansas “Calling The Hogs” mating call at closing time that worked so well for him in the Ozarks?

Mr. Science, you have 5 years from the date you take your first college class unless given an extra second redshirt year for a medical reason. 6 years is the total max.

That and the fact that he played professionally….

Tim, you need to get a fact checker, CUZ Herschel is not only literate, he wrote poetry during his days at UGA, and it was pretty good.

“What kind of business hasn’t failed in downtown Athens? I know, a Herschel Walker business”… Geez, how do people not see the writing on the wall before investing. I would actually say the odds of Herchel getting reinstated for his final year of eligibility are higher than this business still being open in 3 years. I mean Herschel’s the greatest and all but c’mon…

Herschel was an honor student in High school so not just a dumb athlete, he could have made it to and through college without football but probably would never have made the money he has made now. He is also a successful business man with a line of sauces and a major food distribution business that, I believe, is in Texas.

Gotta say, the name could use some work…I mean there ain’t enough neon to get all that on the building. Just go with ‘34 Pub & Grill’…the folks that matter will already know and those that don’t matter…well, you get it. This Herschel’s Famous stuff makes it sound like a hotdog joint, and we’ve already got The Varsity.

Herschel was valedictorian of Johnson County High School in 1980, and maintained a B avg. at UGA. I read tons about Herschel when I was a kid. Also, you can learn much of this kind of thing from the ESPN documentary, “Herschel”. http://www.sicemdawgs.com/2012/02/herschel-espn-films-dvd-now-available/

I met Hershel on the campus bus the Friday before the run Lindsey, run Florida game his first year. We were practically the only students on campus. He was humble and soft spoken and I asked him to make the gaotrs eat boogers which he did. I will make a special trip to Athens to patronize his place whether he is there or not.

At Herschel’s bar, will the bouncers leave you alone if you take your wife there and put an handgun in her mouth for giving you lip?

Reportedly, that is why “Cindy Walker” now has a new surname…

Even though this bar will be in a college town full of doped & stoned liberal hippies, how long will it be before this establishment starts drawing an “urban” infestation that ultimately results in a drive-by shooting?

@TBone…I met him the Monday after the run Lindsey run Florida game in the Physics building. What a guy he is…myself and 2 or 3 others asked him sign the Red and Black issue that day where he was sprinting across the goal after a long TD run. That was the day that we became ranked #1 after GT of all teams handled Notre Dame the same Saturday. He was so friendly and accommodating signing our paper. To this day, I still have that Front Page framed with his signature…one of my favorite things!

I heard Hershel speak about a year ago. He was one of the most impressive speakers I’ve heard. I knew he wasn’t just another dumb jock, but he exceeded my expectations as a speaker. He already has a few successful businesses, and although it is hard to start a new business, especially a bar/restaurant, I wouldn’t bet against Hershel in Athens.

This is awesome. Athens needs to see more of Herschel so I hope he visits the restaurant at least semi-regularly.

He used to drive me to my Tae Kwon Do classes when I was around 10 (1981). We both trained with Lawrence Huff in downtown Athens, though we were of course in different classes. He was such a great guy to me; I also remember him occasionally taking me to get a snack after class.

How many BARS can Athens support? It seems they don’t follow the 21 Drinking Age Law. There are not enough legal drinking age people to support all the bars in Athens so how do they do it?

Build one of these in the area of “Brookhaven Village” near the intersection of Dresden and Caldwell. You’ll make a lot of money. Restaurants in that area are pretty full on weekday evenings. No sports bar there right now and closest one is Hudson’s, which is average.

Hershel DID graduate from college.
He is a very down to earth and intelligent guy.
And he happens to be one of the best running backs EVER….
And you talk about some other off the wall stuff?
