In Alabama, they’ve already erected a statue of Nick Saban.
In Georgia, many people alternate between hating Saban or Steve Spurrier.

Ex-Dolphins coach Nick Saban (AP)
In South Florida … well that is the place that Saban is – by far – hated the most.
Guess where the BCS Championship game will be played? In Miami, where Saban had a dismal experience as coach of the Miami Dolphins and also misled everybody on taking the Alabama job.
Florida Sun-Sentinel columnist Dave Hyde rehashed the general feeling about Saban:
Hyde then made these two points: “1. As a man, he’s a lout. 2. As a coach, he’s the best in sports today.” After summarizing his opinion, Hyde wrapped it up with this: “That’s why there’s such mixed feelings for Saban. We saw the lout. We just never saw the lout who won enough to make his personality irrelevant.”

1. Saban went to the playoffs his 1st of two years at Miami. So I wouldnt say it was a complete failure. 2. Bama didn’t jump anyone to get to the BCS championship game last year. They were already #2. Lest you forget going into the LSU/ARK game, the BCS rankings were #1 LSU, #2 Bama & #3 Arkansas. Georgia was never in contention for a BCS bowl in 2011.

Patrick- You’re missing the point. Saban complained this week that teams who didn’t play in the SEC Championship should not jump the teams that did as far as the quality of Bowl they play after the SEC Championship game. Going by his logic this week, Alabama should not have had the right to play in last years BCS Title game.
Sounds to me like Steve Spurrier- He is only for something if it benefits him. Rules or logic? Only if my team isn’t the one left out.

If UGA loses this game Saturday they could fall all the way to the Chick Fil A Bowl . Same for Alabama but because of the national following they probably couldn’t fall that far.

He’s a coach who gets paid to win. He keeps his players out of trouble and in the classroom. He develops these young men into NFL caliber talent. He is focused on what he is paid to do, win. And he does it within the rules.
So what if he doesn’t want to be greeted in the morning. So what if he states his opinion. And I bet there is his side of the story involving the player that was convulsing. Like maybe he was not aware of the players condition.
He’s a coach…not a Sunday school teacher.

Saban did not complain, he was asked his opinion and gave it. I don’t give a crap if he tells those players that their daddies smush butterflies with little pink ribbons, they choose to play at Alabama everytime they show up for practice, and if they want to play well, they may continue. I think it is so funny that he is so hated in Georgia and Alabama. If I were him, I would read every silly article and use it to wipe stuff. Then, I would giggle as I got in my Mercedes and ride off into the sunset to go win another game. As for me, I am a long-time Bama fan. I have been here through the good and the bad. I will be here for a long time and I have never hated another coach because they win ballgames!! I have better things to do, like figuring out which hotel to stay at in MIAMI.

OkieDawg-I don’t disagree with anything you’re saying about Saban but if he only cares about what benefits his team, fair or not, then you’re not getting an opinion that is good for College Football as a whole. Just like the comments he made after beating Ole Miss at home. They only won I think by 16 or 20 points and He didnt’ like the hurry up, up tempo offense that Ole Miss used against them so he comes up with some stupid garbage about player safety. It didn’t benefit his team because he couldn’t substitute players out. Nevermind that what Ole Miss was doing was completely within the rules and dont’ think for a moment that UGA didn’t notice the success that Ole Miss had at getting under Saban’s skin.

GA fans you can keep Richt and AL fans can keep Saban. I find it amusing the obsession GA fans have with this guy. If Al was 6-6 or worse, we would not hear one word from you. He and Al are winning and now you have a problem with the guy. It seems to me to be jealousy by the GA fans at the lack of success. Al can’t help that you’ve won nothing since 1980. That is at the feet of the GA brass. You want to get mad, go complain to your administration. They are the ones who set you back 30+ years. JMO.

Make no mistake, we do not alternate between Saban and Spurrier. Bama is something Georgia has to deal with everyonce in a while. We may get tired of Bama fans who tend to move to Atlanta in packs with their Auburn enemies in tow, but most of us respect his accomplishments. We down right hate Spurrier. He is an every year pain in the a$$. He may have bragging rights, but he is constantly taking stabs at Georgia in the media. He really hates UGA since he could not beat the Dawgs as a QB, he lives to beat us as a coach. He does a pretty good job of beating the dawgs. I am ready for the visor to retire. I do not hate Saban. I do question some of his recruiting tactics as do many professional journalists(as noted in the WSJ is several articles, don’t deny it, is legal but unethical Bama fans) but I respect what he is done and how he acts a coach. Spurrier sounds like a spoiled rotten brat when he opens his mouth.

Saban is probably about as good a recruiter as the other “great recruiters” in college football. The reason he can recruit so well RIGHT NOW is simple: Alabama has been the powerhouse of college football since 2008. That’s the difference.
If Georgia or Notre Dame wins this year’s national championship, how many high school seniors will IMMEDIATELY put them at the top of their list? WINNING is the best recruiter.

I love UGA and I love Mark Richt, but had Richt ever left or been fired, I would’ve loved for Saban to come to UGA. Not that he would’ve, just saying I would’ve loved it. I think most level-headed fans would agree.
Spurrier, on the other hand? I’d rather not watch college football than pull for Spurrier. I would’ve boxed up all my Georgia stuff till he was gone.
Saban is a winner with not the best attitude. Spurrier is a whiner who stopped maturing emotionally around age 10.

Hankie Aron – I understand what you are saying. I somewhat agree. What I think Saban’s saying is you shouldn’t be punished if you lose a conference championship game. Its obvious conference championship games dont matter. Ex. you have a team in ND that doesnt even play in a conference going to the BCS Championship and another team in K-State or (Oky St. last yr) that dont play a conference championship game.
To me conference championship games shouldn’t factor in the calculation of the BCS standings. I feel that whatever the BCS standings are at the end of the 12 game regular season, that is what should determine the BCS bowls b/c thats the only time everything is even across the board. If a team, like Alabama in 2011, can go to the BCS championship w/out even winning their division, then a team should not be punished for losing a conference championship game when all other BCS conferences dont play championship games and some teams are independents.
And again, Bama didnt jump anyone last year. They were the #2 team in the BCS. The BCS’s job is to match the #1 & #2 teams, whether you win your conference or not. The only team it could have hurt last year was LSU, just like this yr. One last thing, Im for conference champions w/out divisions or championship games (Round Robin). Thats the only way you can gauge who the true best team in your conference is.

The Tuscaloosa News is fair and balanced in its coverage of the upcoming game. The AJC would have you think Georgia invented football. The players at Alabama have absolutely nothing bad to say about Nick Saban, and he is a stern disciplinarian. If anybody has the right to bitch, it’s them. I worked there, I would know. He is a great coach and I wish Mark would learn from him so Ga would win the big games and get over the hump so to speak. I don’t think my Dawgs will win this weekend mostly because of coaching not talent. We have had top ten recruiting classes just about every year since Mark took over and no National Champions. That is not a great record when you look at what Saban has done in less time. Mark is too nice and does not coach up the boys enough. Sabans players love the man but do not want to let him down.

Every successful person: business, coach, physician, etc. has his/her detractors. The fact is Saban delivers to his players, the team, the fans and the school. As a dawg fan, I recall all the “fire CMR” talk on these blogs prior to the FL game. We won that and we have stomped some pansies since then. Now one would think CMR walked on water. Saban will cause him to pass water Saturday. CMR doesn’t have the will to win that CNS has, and he never will. He’s a good man, but I want a damn good football coach for my team and CNS is a damn good football coach! I wish it weren’t so, but I think Sunday morning will be painful for the Dawg Nation.

Before the Jan 2004 Sugar Bowl/BCS Championship game, Saban stated NO ONE who didn’t win their conference championship should play for the national championship. Of course, he was speaking of Oklahoma that year. This article mentions he misled people concerning Alabama but leaves out he misled LSU about going to Miami. I didn’t care for him at LSU and I still don’t care for him although his wife has made it known she’d rather have stayed in Baton Rouge. She seems like such a nice woman, I have to think Nick is a 100% different man at home than work because he wouldn’t know how to sincerely smile if his life depended on it. He’s just a jerk and a few years ago I wondered how long it would take someone to tell the cameramen NOT to linger on him too long because the words he says are easily lip-read. And I’d hate to be a player called out for bad-mouthing him. It’s expected for a coach to be a firm disciplinarian but he doesn’t have to be a jerk all the time yet he is. I know how to change that – just shove a Lil Debbie Oatmeal Pie in his mouth and he’ll be fine, until he finishes it. Wonder when he’ll finally sell the house he still own in Baton Rouge?

At this time in college football, there are two categories of coaches: Nick Saban and everyone else. He has had top level success at LSU and Alabama. His teams are the best prepared and because of that, they win games. Everything he does is a means to an end: win games. When you do that, there is colateral damage. Most of that exists as the feelings of those who could no longer help him win games. He doesn’t have to be a nice guy. The fact that he wins allows his faults a pass. Look at Georgia Tech – Paul Johnson is Nick Saban without all the baggage of talent and success.
I believe that 96% of the UGA fans agree that he is the best coach in college football. The AJC is a newspaper that makes money by getting more readers and website hits. Don’t confuse stories written to “stir the pot” as the mantra of the Dawg Nation.

As a Bama alum living in Atlanta for the last 18 years, I can say the Dawgs are my second favorite team. Saban is not a warm and fuzzy kind of guy, I dont need that in my coach. I need a coach who wins consistently, produces quality young men who when they leave college are ready to be responsible citizens and contribute positively in society, who runs a clean program and one that is respected. I personally don’t have to be friends with him. Granted if I were asked to go to dinner with one I would choose Richt because personally I have more in common with him than I would with Saban. Richt is a great man, good values and morals and pretty decent coach. I’d rather be his neighbor than Coach Saban but in choosing a football coach, it’s not even close. I would take Saban every time.
I look forward to watching two very closely matched teams play Saturday! It will be a low scoring, tough game just the kind Oregon and the other left coast liberals hate to watch! SEC footall at it’s best! Roll Tide!

The story of Coach Saban supposedly stepping over a player who was convulsing was promulgating by a booger eater (Heath Evans) so it should be taken with a grain of salt. Coach Saban is not a medical professional and it is certainly not his fault that the two former Auburn players involved (Heath Evans and Jeno James)did not show up in playing shape. The “Five reasons Nick Saban may be overrated” hit piece is hilarious. So because Alabama won “only” 2 National Championships “when they could have won 3″, he is overrated? How many did Georgia win during that time, or for that matter ever? I believe Bama’s count is 16.
It should be enough for Georgia to be proud of being #3 currently–with a shot at the big game–rather than have an unprepossessing sports writer hastily slam together a hit piece that makes himself look awfully silly. And I predict after Saturday night he’ll look even sillier.

Envy is a stinky cologne to some of those on here running their mouths. You cannot simply discredit the facts and what he has done as a coach. Like I saw above, you don’t have to have a man crush on the guy to appreciate the way he coaches. he wins, simple as that. I know you Georgia fans would take that over a man crush any day, so don’t get me started on all the ones calling for Mark Richt’s hyde before even the Florida game of this year. Georgia fans would kill for a Coach like Nick Sabana to come in and win two, about to be three Championships, in four years, so don’t give me all that self righteous crap you folks continue to spew from behind a freaking keyboard.

Kevin, no comparison to Herschel? Obvioulsy he was great, one of the greatest, and was robbed for the Heisman his frosh year. But I’d put Barry Sander (OSU), Bo Jackson (in fact, I’d take Bo b/c he had to block and was faster and more aggressive) and Marcus Allen against him (and they were contemporaries). Throw in Marcus Dupree, too. As for Saban…he is straight up a good man and a good coach. Georgies are always complaining about ‘bama being too tough. Look, win the SEC 14 more times and 11 more Nat’l Champs and we can talk. With all those draft picks and recruits you ought to be better than you are – but nothing ever comes of it. Maybe this is your chance.

Sour grapes. It is what it is. If Petrino had Arky in the game then the Devil himself would be in the Ga Dome. Nothing like the ajc digging up some lame azz beat writer from Miami for SOMETHING negative to post about the tide. Not unlike the article yesterday about a tweet from a true freshman. Since I am a tide fan I have been pretty cool about the game so far(meaning I hoped for a good game). Now I hope Bama makes dog sh*t out of UGA, and honestly I never doubted they would. Bama 24 UGA 13. UGA scores late to get 13. Late in the 4th 24-6. Bama rolls ND.

@aon…You make a good point and I assume that good point is about an alleged sorority cat fight involving Saban’s daughter. Saban is not paid to keep his daughter out of cat fights in the sorority house. Blame that one on alcohol and even Terry if you must. He has a full time job looking after 100 football playing kids and he does an excellent job. I’m sure he gave Kristen a good talk but I doubt it was all Kristen’s fault. In fact, I’m sure it was not all on Kristen. That was a non story…tool.

Purposeless article. Man, can’t the media leave well enough alone?
1. Alabama – great tradition of excellence and sound leadership in athletics, academics, fundraising, facilities, and the like. Visited there last year. They led a $650mm capital campaign a few years ago and raised $100mm from 100 alum in first few months. Everything there is new, except that which mother nature took. They are benefiting grandly from the political effect of Hope in Georgia that leaves tons of very qualified students from Atlanta and Dallas unable to get into their State Universities.
2. Georgia – Great tradition in athletics, beneficiary of closest proximity to the fastest growing most dynamic population center in the South.
This is FUN! And the winner gets to beat a rust belt has been. Most of the a$$wipes on here never darkened the door of either. Lighten up and don’t feed the media crave for crap to throw.
After all….its a game. Who among you doesn’t have to go to work Monday regardless of the outcome?
The national media all want to disparage us….to hell with them….we already won…..and if you don’t believe it, check the numbers on net migration from the South to Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, New Jersey, Penn, et al.

So called journalists love to write about the negative. If they weren’t so lazy they could have told all Saban name callers about the fact that he donated $75000.00 each for 15 Habitat houses to be built in one of the most damaged areas of Tuscaloosa last year or about the 2,500,000.00 dollars that his Nick’s Kids Foundation has given to children’s organizations in the past four years. Name another coach who has even come close to his benevolence.

Anyone who reads this article and believes this stuff has got to be the least objective person on the planet. People are jealous of Saban because he out works the coaches of their respective teams. Plain and simple. Saban calls a spade a spade and does not sugar coat things. If he is such a bad guy, why has he donated over $1,500,000 (in just five years at Alabama) to the University of Alabama academic scholarship fund for first generation college students? Answer me that. AJC is a dying paper and this is evidence of that…

I got the feeling Georgia may be wanting some of that dark side Saturday. Alabama pays this man a lot of money to do exactly what he does. If Richt doesn’t win Saturday go back and read this article and see how little sense it makes. The confusion here is that Georgia has done something. Unless this easier path to the championship is met with a victory, Georgia is still not in the class of Alabama. My real curiosity is has the rest of the country, like ND started catching up with Alabama. Georgia needs to show up this year or be thrown back into the frying pan.

It has been reported that Saban has many sleepless nights over concern what the folks in S. Florida think of him. Seriously, when Bama hired him, a long-time LSU fan told me “Saban is a football nerd. All he thinks about is football, but if they will get out of his way he will have them back on top of college football. Not much on personality, but he can coach”. I wish the LSU guy would’ve given me some stock tips too……

Here is Nick Saban’s quote. What in the heck did you expect him to say “If we lose the game then we don’t deserve to go to a BCS bowl?” We will see what you “Dawg fans are saying after you lose the game.
“It’s not really a great scenario,” he said Sunday on a teleconference. “You play your way into the (SEC) championship game, which means you’re the best team in your division… It doesn’t seem quite right, but it is what it is. I don’t really know what me commenting about it is going to do to change it. But I don’t feel good about it.”

There is humor in the thought of Saban caring what is thought of him in South Florida. Like Spurrier this story has been told and they won; now the attention needs to be put on Richt who is not a blue chip yet, or may he ever be. One scheduling change this year putting Alabama off the schedule and Missouri ,not Texas A&M, on the schedule would have had Florida playing in this matchup, which lost to Georgia only after brutal games with LSU and South Carolina right in a row. Laugh all you want about Saban but I can barely see you under that big hat and there is no cattle in sight.

I dont mind Hicksville personally. I think people that live in alabama and Georgia in the rural areas are the salt of the earth. I grew up in beautiful NE Alabama and at least in Alabama , even in rural areas you have cable. If your town doesnt have more than 30,000 people in it you have to be a dish or direct tv user.
