Mark Richt would burn QB’s redshirt season, if needed, for two games

How bad does Mark Richt want to win the SEC Championship?

So badly that he would burn a year of college eligibility for his No. 2 quarterback, if needed.

Aaron Murray’s backup, Hutson Mason, hasn’t played this season in order to redshirt and have two years to play after this season.

Richt admitted on his radio show on Monday that if Murray suffered a season-ending injury, he would toss that plan and play Mason.

Burn a whole year of eligibility for two games? Yes, UGA hasn’t played in two games with such high stakes in nearly three decades.

If UGA defeats Alabama in the SEC Championship, it would likely advance to play Notre Dame for its first national title since 1980.

Mason has the potential to be just as talented as Murray but hasn’t really been given the opportunity to showcase his skills. Mason considered transferring from UGA after last season, but decided to stay – even though there is the possibility that Murray will return for his senior season because he doesn’t project to go high enough in the NFL Draft.

Why not? There are truly no other viable choices and if this is the biggest game in 30 + yrs you pull out all of your resources. Chances will be slim over the next two yrs with losing the majority of your defense.

You bet, he would jump at the chance to play in the SECCG and the NCG?

Hell, I’ll tape my ankles.

Put me in coach, I’m ready to play!
Let me put down this beer and bag of chips and I’ll start warming up.
OH, heck I think I just pull my gluteus maximus getting up off the sofa.
Better go with Mason as the backup plan.

Pretend that Murray stays healthy and UGA wins on Saturday. Regardless of what happens against ND Murray should go pro. At or near the top of national passing leaders, winning the SEC, and playing for D1 championship, his stock is not gonna go higher next year with a bunch of inexperienced receivers plus a defense losing at least 3 first round picks and the risk of injury and he is set to graduate.

“If UGA defeats Alabama in the SEC Championship, it would “LIKELY” advance to play Notre Dame for its first national title since 1980.”–AJC SPORTS DUNCE

What a stupid thing to say!

EVERYONE has concluded that whoever wins the SEC CG……..WILL….. play Notre Dame for the BCS National Title. Get over your ANTI-UGA bias, Writer! Wake Up SAP!

Mason is taller with the (raw) potential to be a 1st round NFL draft pick. IF he gets two more seasons at UGA (& stays healthy), look for him to tear it up on the ‘14 season.

I hope AM stays healthy over these last two games, but it’s good to know that Mr. Mason is there if needed. He’s a great QB who will perform at the highest level when given the opportunity.

We will take Murray out in the first quarter.
Aaron Murray would not even start at a truly great university like Alabama.
Our defense will shut down UGA!

If Murray enters the draft this year he will more than likely go in the first round. There are teams that have said they would take him in the first round if he’s available. Hutson Mason is a jam up good QB, by far the best on the team if Murray doesn’t come back.

@ USMC Dawg:

Don’t bet the rent money on UGA being a “Shoo In” to play Notre Dame if UGA beats Bama. Most of the “pundits” are already talking about the NC game between ND and Bama as though UGA is irrelevent. Others are apparently hoping that the Gators jump over UGA in the Final Polls. Please note that Florida is only a VERY short hop behind UGA in the current polls.

That should give us(Dawg Nation) motivation to pull out ALL STOPS to win the SEC Championship and when/If that happens there should be no further discussion on which team will play Notre Dame for the NC…………………………………………………….BUT THERE WILL BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are kids right here in Gwinnett that wanted to go to UGA, but just didn’t quite have the grades to qualify. Now they’re going to Bama and doing good…….but they’re not Dawgs.

@ Kirby Smart:

Last time I checked(Today) Murray was the No.1 rated QB in the nation. I believe that would include the State of Bammy(aka The Land of The Singlewide/Grayshirt U/Saban The Whiner)

When large numbers are involved, Bama Boy always comes up with the number 6 because, like most Bammians, that is as high as he/she/it can count!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Big Board

While Murray has had a good season, it would take 2 great games on the biggest stage in order for him to move up the draft board into the first round. Bottom line is that while his football stats are great, his size will hold him back. Stafford went #1 overall because he had size and a cannon of an arm. Murray is closer to David Greene. A very capable college QB who may or may not make it at the next level. I do think that he is more in line with a Drew Brees. A little undersized, but smart enough to overcome it. He just has to prove it on the big stage. The only chance of Murray turning pro this year is if the Dawgs win it all. He may come back either way. If he does, I hope that CMR and Bobo will get Mason some quality reps like they did for DJ during Greene’s senior year. GO DAWGS

Can you provide a link to the teams that said they would take Murray in the 1st round? I haven’t heard this claim before.

Poor planning not to have played the backup, especially given the all but two game cupcake schedule the dogs played. That will come back and bite the dogs vs Bama.

Florida jumping over UGA if UGA wins SEC CG??? Somebody must be on crack. Take a look at the number 1 in the L column for the Gators and get back to us with who put it there.

I would also add that IF Murray were to suffer an injury and Mason plays last 2 games, Murray could be looking at being the clipboard carrier if he comes back for his final year of eligibility. There would definitely be a QB controversy in Athens in 2013 in that scenario.

November 28th, 2012

Hutson Mason is a really good kid, and unselfish. He is ready to play, and he is actually a better qb than Murray. It would be a great story for every sports fan to see Mason lay down the clipboard and enter the game to show his great ability to make reads and hit his receivers to win both games. I would not wish injury to Murray, but Mason can do the job.

Say What???

Am I the only one that sees that this is not your “normal” UGA team? I mean, usually we play down to our competition (See Kentucky game, Buffalo game). But since Kentucky, that has not been the case. We have wiped the field with the teams that we have played. You could sense it in our first offensive series against Tech. And here, Richt is showing it again. One of the common complaints about him is the fact that he is so conservative about putting red shirts on gifted players. This week he says that he will burn Mason’s redshirt for two games if Murray gets hurt!

Alabama is expecting the same ol’ UGA – the one from the infamous “Blackout” game… But I don’t think that is who is showing up at the Dome on Saturday. I am not convinced that we will win this game, but if we don’t, its gonna be extremely close. I hope all of the Bama players have the same though process as a lot of trolls that have been spending a so much time on these blogs.

Come on, boys! Finish the Drill!

Please stay healthy Aaron Murray. We need Mason in 2014. He will be an able backup next year. Let him play during the games to get him ready. As for this year, let’s hope it doesn’t happen. What a waste if he has to play. I know all the marbles are on the line but maybe there is a better way. No, I can’t think of one. Play him if necessary. We’ll take care of 2014 some other way.
