Nick Saban gives some love to Todd Grantham

Nick Saban gave out a lot of love for UGA during his Sunday teleconference for the SEC Championship game

Much of Saban’s love was for Todd Grantham, UGA’s intense defensive coordinator. Grantham worked under Saban at Michigan State as an assistant from 1996-98.

The way Saban reminisced, it was like the two were together drawing up X’s and O’s yesterday. Saban dared to rank Grantham as one of his best ever assistants – a group that includes Derek Dooley, Will Muschamp and Kirby Smart.

Here’s what Saban said:

“Todd is an outstanding coach, coached on our staff way back at Michigan State. That seems like a long time ago.  But had a lot of good experience in the NFL. I’ve always been really close to Todd professionally and personally.  I think he’s done a phenomenal job there (at Georgia). There are some similarities in the system and scheme they use relative to what we use.  But I just think he has done a really good job. (He) has his own ideas and methods about how he does it.  I think their players play extremely well.  I think that always has something to do with the coach, the system, (and) how it’s taught. They do a really good job.”

“If you’re going to rank assistants, he’s one of the two or three best I’ve ever had on our staff.  Did a phenomenal job for us.  I certainly have a lot of respect for what he’s done at Georgia.”

What do you think about Grantham? Is Saban correct? And will Grantham, like his other favorite assistants, eventually be a head coach? Please post below.

Without Grantham we aren’t SEC east champs and richt probably would have been fired last year.

Saban is just trying to butter GA’s defense up, but I think he is actually worried about being able to move the ball against GA. GA’s defense is better than LSU’s and they struggled moving the ball against them.

….I don’t see any reason to doubt CNS’s word on this, considering that coach grantham is undoubtedly a very good defensive coordinator.

Sound like Satan is trying to get Grantham a head coaching job. Or at least get him thinking about it.

Georgia is stupid if they fall for Saban’s praise. If memory servers me correct, Saban did not have nice things to say about the Georgia program when Richt was looking for a D-Coordinator. Don’t fall for the ol okie doke.

When Willie Martinez was fired at Georgia and we were flirting with Kirby Smart Saban called Grantham and told him that if Kirby took the job he wanted to speak with him about coming to Alabama..Grantham is the real coach of Georgia’s defense while Saban runs the Alabama defense and Kirby Smart just rides his coat tail.We have have the better of the two.

Listen, yo…

Grantham’s done a good job, but Saban is the top head coach. Only a fool would not admit this. Look at the salaries. They don’t pay more for nothing…

UGA must really focus and get into a winning trance in order to send the Tide home on the losing end. Remember, Alabama started UGA’s slide with the smackdown when Richt was trying to use the “Blackouts” and drawing unsportsmanlike conduct penalties when UGA scored a touchdown against Florida.

Gimmicks don’t work at this level. The Dawgs need to get the “Eye of the Tiger”. If they do, they can go to the NC. If not, it’s a short ride home to Athens…

Snoop is praying that the Dawgs of 2012 find a way to draw revenge on the Tide….

What the Georgia people should be saying are things that would make us seem more like an underdog, maybe increase the point spread. Can Mark Richt finally show that his coaching ability can match his recruiting acumen? We need to call Pat Dye and have him say on the radio that he doesn’t thing Georgia is ‘man enough’ to beat Alabama, like he did in 2002. I want us to be laying in the weeds next week.

Saban knows with all the coaching vacancies, he’s going to lose Smart, so he’s trying to position Grantham for one of those head coaching vacancies, so that UGA has to make some adjustments to a new DC and Bama does not lose their edge going forward into next year. Saban knows that UGA is the closest to Bama in the SEC in terms of talent, and he’s looking to not lose ground. The man’s pretty crafty.

Y’all are reading way way too much into this. Grantham is a hell of a defensive mind, saban knows it and is complimenting one of his own – makes complete sense for an ego guy to extoll the virtues of his pupils. CTG has to get control of his emotions and learn the CEO ropes from richt for 2 more years – then he will be ready to be a head coach. We won’t have him past 2014.

Well Smart and Grantham both will probably be considered for head jobs. Both could probably get one of the SEC jobs. We shall see…If they have a choice I’d take the Tenn job first and play in the east. If Auburn considers and hires Petrino then they’ll jump ahead of Saban and Spurrier as the coach I want to lose the most!

In this game Grantham is working with a really loaded defense, not that Saban/Kirby arent either. Though IMO more players outside of the usual suspects will breakout and shine as well. Oline for UGA since socar has continued to gain experience and progress. Should be interesting to see how well tide handle all the weapons murray has. Look for Jay Rome, kids a beast! Dawgs FoldTide, and get past the clipse and finally back as the Big Dawgs!

Like what I am seeing from TG’s Men…No Quit in this team. No reason to worry bout Rambo’s poster material..Sabans’ teams don’t need that stuff to play at high levels, we have just got to take care of our business at a high level as well and we will overcome. We’ve often seen early game setbacks, but the fight and determination seems to build as the game goes on. We probably should play a quarter before the game starts to get the Junkyard Dawgs lathered up and Murray used to playing against pressure. I fully believe the Dawgs come thru on this one. “Our Team, Our Time, NO REGRETS” SIC EM DAWGS!!!!

Saban has always been respectful in his analysis of Richt.
I’ve listened to every presser the man has given as coach at Bama.
I know when he’s flapping gums & when he’s seriously giving compliments.
Take the compliment people — the world is not against you(as y’all would love to believe)!

I would like to think Todd would honor his contract. But then again I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t look into & interveiw for some SEC vacanices. Auburn or Tenn. But in general I think he feels connected to this recruiting class he’s been bringing in. Who knows I never dreamed ERK would leave for southern either !! LET THE BIG DAWG EAT

He’s got some really good recruits coming in & alot of them !! But I truely believe when his contract is up He’ll seriously consider getting his name more out there. By then he will have built this “D” into the one of the nations best if not the best !!

I have no doubt that the DAWGS defense will show up and play hard. BAMA will use a short aggresive passing game with a balanced running attack. This will all boil down to Mike Bobo, Aron Murray and the WR corps! UGA cannot afford to drop passes and miss opportunities as they have in past games. I hope they can get over the hump because even though Saban is a whatever you want to call him but BAMA is coming to lay the wood for sure!
