Governor criticizes Alabama’s play-calling

Everybody’s a coach, it seems, and even Nick Saban isn’t immune from the second-guessing.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, appearing on a Birmingham sports talk radio show, joined the chorus of fans questioning the play-calling on the final series against Texas A&M Saturday that might have cost Alabama a shot at the national championship.

Trailing 29-24 in the final minutes of play and with first and goal inside the Aggie 6 yard line, the Tide ran the ball once and threw three passes, the last of which was intercepted.

Asked by host Paul Finebaum “would you have run the ball on the 2 yard line?” Bentley, an Alabama alumnus, responded, “I would actually have run the ball for four straight times.”

Hindsight, as they say, is always 20-20, but since A.J. McCarron had already passed for more than 300 yards on the Aggie defense, while the Tide had run for 122, it’s understandable why Saban and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeir decided a pass was the better option on fourth and goal.

Saban wasn’t second-guessing Nussmeir but seemed to leave the door open to the critics.

“I think he’s doing fine,” Saban said of Nussmeir. “We’re pleased with the progress that we’ve made offensively and the consistency that we’ve played with. Are there things we can do better? No doubt. Are there some situations in games that maybe we could have managed differently and done better? I don’t think there’s any doubt.”

Situations like fourth and goal from the two?

I agree with the Governor (and lots of other people)–pretty weak play calling. There’s a big difference between being able to pass at mid-field and being able to pass at the 2 yard line.

Everybody has the right to second guess a team. But how is it Georgia news?
Are you guys trying to take Auburn’s place as Alabama’s jealous little redhead brother?
And by the way, Backwoods Brother Bentley is a former surgeon, takes no salary, and basically
doesn’t need the job.

Nick’s not happy Nussmeir and that bad playcalling inside the 6—alabama should have run the ball and they would have scored easily

Now……the good people of Alabama should be questioning why the freakinn’ Governor is calling Pail Finebaum instead of getting work done. I guess he’s typical of the other trailer-trash that calls in there every day.

This is a perfect example of why we never see any Bama kids getting arrested for anything. It is not the wonderful dicipline of the coaching staff. It is the fact that even the Governor gets pissy when they loose. The only cops that would dare cause any trouble for this team are the ones driving around in Auburn, and many of them may have changed colors after this season.

Well let me see:
Misichgan, Western KY, Ark. , Fla. Atlantic, Missouri, Tenn., Miss. State, LSU, TX A&M, WESTERN CAROLINA, Auburn.

Don’t see much difference in UGA’s schedule LSU ; Tx.A&M or USC in Columbia and FLA

Someone tell me where the big difference is. We lost to So.Car at there place and Bummer got beat by A&M at home. Dawgs beat the team that beat LSU

I live over here with these obnoxious Bamers and have to listen to their crap all day long. It you listed to them we shouldn’t even have to play the games because they are entitled to the National Championship every year. It they want to complain about the last offensive series, they should ask why their vaunted defense gave up 29 points. On play doesn’t win or loose a game – it is what you do for 60 minutes. Of course they want to fire the offensive coordinator cause AJ threw an interception. Idiots!

A good indicator of why Alabama is dead last in education in this country. The #$@!! Governor is calling in to the radio version of Jerry Springer to complain about a Tahd loss. Good Lord.

****Rowh Tahd***** Don’t think Saban needs to be calling a HS coach like Propst. He has screwed up twice this year on two pt. conversion tries that cost him a couple of wins. He runs all over a team then goes to the air from the 2 yd. line. As someone else said earlier, you just don’t have the room to work with when you get that close. Twice he could have walked it in basically, but had a “brainfart”. Just because Propst(now at Colquitt Co. GA) coached at Hoover High in AL does not mean he’s brilliant !!!!

Good Lord, the Tide haters are coming out of the woodwork. Was Alabama unprepared? Yes. Was the play-calling suspect? Yes. Did Alabama essentially replace their entire defense from last season? Yes. It finally showed. Alabama has nine scholarship seniors on this team. Yet they still steamrolled everyone until the LSU game. Y’all might want to STFU because you WILL be eating your words in the next couple of years.

JT

Many Bama fans agree they should have ran the ball all four downs in the attempt to score rather than throw a pass from inside the six yard line. A valuable lesson learned for the team is to be more focused and play much better and not to get in that predictament again.

Not necessarily run it four straight plays, but do something creative…some kind of misdirection, play-action fake with AJ sneaking it, etc, etc. It’s over now and it doesn’t matter, but damn, it still stings. What might have been……

Why is the governor of Alabama on a sports talk radio show in the first place. He must not have much to do. Maybe someone needs to write him a job description. These politicians live off the value producers, the worker’s backs, live off taxpayer’s hard-earned money that is forcibly taken from them at the point of a gun. Then they act like they can do just anything they want, with no accountability. Then they fraud the students with these college loans that take forever to pay back (if they can find a job) while paying coaches like Saban these enormous salaries.I love football too, but I am not a fool. I know honesty from dishonesty and the dishonesty in this country is so rampart from top to bottom that eventually it is all going to collapse because the workers (value-producers, the real heroes) cannot support everyone else forever. Then football will be irrelevant. These dishonest professional value-destroyers drain everyone, they drain our wealth, our health, our property, eventually our lives. They use us till they use us up. People need to see what’s really going on or it’s going to be gone and then everybody will see what these dishonest criminal minds have done. They have perfected the art of living off other people and making it look like they are working for the “social good” . . . . they are afraid to compete for their own existence.
