Days numbered for Chizik, Kiffin?

Time may be running out on Auburn coach Gene Chizik and USC coach Lane Kiffin.

Reports that Chizik will lose his job have been rampant as Auburn’s worst season in decades goes from bad to worse. Now, the website 247Sports.com, citing anonymous sources, reports that Auburn president Jay Gogue has told members of the Board of Trustees that he is preparing to possibly dismiss Chizik.

According to 247Sports.com, Gogue talked to board members about forming a committee to help with the process of firing Chizik and naming a new head coach “within days after the end of the season …”

The website named Louisville offensive coordinator Shawn Watson as a possible candidate to replace Chizik.

Kiffin, meanwhile, is on shaky ground after the Trojans announced they had been reprimanded and fined by the Pac-12 because a student manager deflated several footballs during the Trojans’ 62-51 loss to Oregon on Saturday.

Writes Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times:

On the field, this team with unbeaten talent is 6-3 while gaining national recognition mostly for reckless penalties and questionable play-calling.

Off the field, Kiffin has dragged the team through an array of distractions and ethics dilemmas that have tarnished the athletic department’s sterling post-probation image cultivated by Athletic Director Pat Haden.

Kiffin was not hired by Haden, and there is now real doubt about his ability to keep his job beyond this season as the department sinks deeper into embarrassment.

Although Kiffin denied knowing about the ball-deflating incident, he has been involved in several other questionable moves: He stopped allowing visiting teams to use the L.A. Coliseum the day before a game for traditional walk-throughs; banned a reporter for writing about injuries, before Haden reversed the ban; and changed numbers during games — a possible rules violation.

It appear, however, that Kiffin will at least finish out the season. The same may not be true for Chizik, whose team is 2-7, winless in the SEC and is facing No. 5 Georgia Saturday night. Could a beatdown by the Bulldogs seal Chizik’s fate?

College Football has a number of shady characters; however, LANE KIFFIN needs to go.
He is bad for College Football. :-)

Kiffin seems like a terrible person, and he has done more to embarrass USC than you could believe. If he was winning, you overlook it, but hsi team is hugely disappointing.

Good riddance. Enjoy coaching Northern Arizona next year.

The NC for Auburn goes to Newton, Fairley, and Dyer, plus the Auburn boosters that paid their salaries, and Malzahn. Chizik is a .333 coach in years where his boosters do not buy him championships.

USC and Auburn could just switch coaches, for all the difference it would make.

Neither of them will ever beat Coach Saban again.

Chizik had no credentials….he bought one championship. Kiffin, like him or not, has some ability. USC was in a cluster (sanctions, etc.) and has gotten better….just a run of bad luck. He should probably get another season. Chzik should be where he belongs; sucking farts out of the seats at a local car dealership!

Kiffin is an embarrassment to college football. How does this guy keep getting head coaching job because every where he has gone has turned into a train wreak. Oakland-Tenn-USC- need I say any more

You mean Cam won the NC for awburn. And they shouldn’t have fallen that far that fast. With a recent NC it should have helped recruit the talent to at least compete in the SEC. His complete college record doesn’t say much for him staying, especially if you throw out that one season. If he would have won a couple of more games he might have been able to get another year.
And that USC thing smells might funny. Kiffin couldn’t even look the reporters in the eye during the interview. That manager is a loyal dude, though.

Kiffin was under fire on USC blogs before the Oregon loss. He’s got a tough stretch ahead; Notre Dame, of course at the end of the regular season, but assuming they beat Arizona St. and UCLA (6-2), most likely Oregon again. This team was picked by one preseason writer to play for the BCS CG (against Georgia).

Chizik is not a great coach. And give me a break on the ‘winning national championship’ two years ago crap. Take Cam off that team and they lose at least three games in the regular season. Chizik was horrible at Iowa State. The guy that replaced him has got them to a respectable place. I was surprised Auburn hired him, (not that I care.) Never under estimate the old boy network and donor big money.

Kiffin is a good fit for area football, no disrespect intended.

It’s difficult not to see Chizik’s days are numbered. Aside from the Cam Newton year, he has a terrible record. Thirty years ago he probably would be given more time, but it’s the fast and the furious these days.

What amazes me is that both schools should have known what they were getting. The college football fraternity is very close knit and people talk – even if you don’t ask. Remember the reception the Auburn fans gave Chizik when arrived the first time? Didn’t USC look at Kiffin’s job at UT? You have to wonder what some of these schools must be thinking. Was Bobby P. a surprise? Hardly.

Chizik has at least accomplished something at Auburn. Lane Kiffin is a zero on and ten scale. He is trouble and has demonstrated this with questionable decisions over and over again. He’s bad news!

Funny, can we not see the Irony in this; The incessant insatiable destructive revolving door desire for winning at ALL costs in college football that is to Fire Gene Chizik, is the SAME fundamental driver that CREATES the Lane Kiffins of the world.

Kiffin is not welcome in Oakland or Knoxville, and maybe he’ll add LA to that list. I don’t get it; because his daddy was a pretty good Defensive coach, he gets endless opportunities. Well, he hasn’t done anything with any of them…..especially the four-ace hand he held this year at USC. Matt Barkley did the right thing; unfortunately for him, his coach WAS a moron…..

Deflating balls, funny. First, Oregon never had to punt. Secondly, they ran the ball most of the time, all an underinflated ball would do was be a little easier to hold. Sure didn’t appear to slow down the QB throwing for 300+ either….

I don’t understand how Chizik is two years removed from winning a National Championship at Auburn and there is serious talk of his dismissal. While on the other hand Coach Richt had 11 years at UGA and did not even contend for a title game. Maybe that what’s UGA hired him for, to win now and then in the SEC championship.

Chizik is a great man and a pretty good coach. His time may be up but he should not be hated on. He held the kids accountable (unlike Mark Richt) and taught them a lot about being a young man, not just a football player. I’m not saying he should stay, but he deserves credit for winning Auburn’s first NC in 50 years.

Chizik kept a team together and focused during the biggest witchhunt in NCAA history. All the pathetic fanbases who couldn’t handle Auburns great success in 2010 plus the NCAA couldn’t bring him down. Give the man a little credit. Helluva lot better than being a midtier UGA fan and looking forward to the Orlando/Tampa bowls every year.
