Could the Hogs be calling Bobby Petrino again? (AP photo)
Johnson, the former head coach of the Miami Hurricanes, Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins, told Gino Torretta and Jack Arute on their Sirius XM radio show:
“Some people might laugh but I’m serious about it. If they want an outstanding coach they ought to bring back Petrino or hire Butch Davis. And people say, ‘Well how in the world can you bring back Petrino?’ I said, ‘Listen, you forgave Bill Clinton.’ Forgive the man. Forgive the man for making a bad decision. Give him an opportunity to coach again.
“I mean he wants to get back into coaching and he’s a great coach and he made a mistake. This whole country, it’s built on forgiving people and giving them second chances. And I think the fan base would love to bring him back. But if they don’t bring him back? But you know, Butch Davis, give him an opportunity. …”
Davis is another former Hurricane coach who was fired by the University of North Carolina amid an NCAA investigation into the Tar Heel football program. Davis was not directly linked to any of the violations that occurred.
Petrino, on the other hand, was linked to wrongdoing — albeit off the field. He was fired in April after a motorcycle wreck involving a woman with whom he admitted having an affair. Arkansas currently has an interim coach, John L. Smith.
On Wednesday, Petrino’s father told the Louisville Courier-Journal that his son was interested in the head coaching job at Kentucky, which announced last week the firing of Joker Phillips.
“I just know this, that he’s interested in Kentucky,” Bobby Petrino Sr. told the newspaper. “He wants to stay in the SEC. That was his life’s goal was to go to the SEC.”
“You know, he made mistakes,” Petrino Sr. said, “but he couldn’t have gone through any punishment worse than losing his job. He’s missed coaching tremendously.”
While it seems unlikely Petrino will return to Arkansas, he’ll undoubtedly be hired by someone at some point. In addition to Kentucky, fans on message boards at Tennessee, Auburn and even Georgia Tech have expressed support for hiring him. What program do you think is the best fit for Petrino?

Where ever he goes he will bring chaos and distrust with him. If he is to coach again he has not earned a spot at an SEC school. He needs to re-earn his status and trust and for that matter his ability to set a good example for his players.

The same people who forgave an impeached President, are against forgiving a football coach? What a bunch of hypocrites ! The man can coach! Heck Arkansas can get him cheap now, instead of 3.5 mil a year probably 1 mil ! And guess what? He’s the best coach out there, he still has a house there, his brother is there and everything is still in place. Put him on a short leash and put incentives for bonuses. He can recruit and can coach

He should have to start over, maybe a high school assistant coaching position. I’m not against him working his way back up to the top but even in NASCAR when you get the Lucky Dog you go to the back of the pack. Petrino should not be allowed to hire any subordinates either. And Bobby, leave them high school girls alone.

Hey nothing surprises me anymore. This garbage about coaches being positive role models for their players went by the wayside for the mantra “win at all costs” many moons ago. Arkansas hired Petrino before forgiving the jumping of contracts for “greener pastures” that was a history with this guy – just like Alabama did with Saban and LSU with Miles. But they’re winners in the record book. So Arkansas will look the other way and using in Jimmy Johnson’s words – ‘Listen, you forgave Bill Clinton.’ as their public good Christian stance. And if Arkansas doesn’t, Kentucky will. Look at the track record of the coach they have for their basketball team now.

Maybe Jimmy Johnson has an ulterior motive……………………..
(reprinted without permission)
“Johnson interviewed for the head coaching job at Arkansas when Lou Holtz left following the 1983 season, then later found out that Ken Hatfield had already been hired. Upset that Frank Broyles (who was still the Arkansas athletic director) made no mention of this during the interview, Jimmy distanced himself from his alma mater. As payback for the snub, a home-and-home series was scheduled with Arkansas. In 1987 Miami gave Arkansas its worst home loss ever by a point margin of 51-7.”

Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, making a mistake is one thing- abusing your position is quite another. If he had an affair and was fired for lying about it, that would be one thing. But the man used his position to hire his mistress for a position she wasn’t qualified for. That serious business. He is lucky the university did not press charges. That my friends is fraud.
No if wants back into coaching he needs to prove himself at a lower level school before he just waltzes his way back to a multi-million $ contract again. And even then his agent better be prepared to accept an airtight contract from the hiring school with zero leeway.

We are quick to accuse and convict but very pitiful about forgiveness. The bible says ‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”, I see a lot of rocks flying, but I bet they are ALL be thrown by the sinners who have not be caught or got in a situation and out before anybody knew about it! His issue was more of a family issue than a work issue and should be resolved by his family! People can chose their role models and we will just decide here and now, he shouldn’t e considered a roll model but he is a great coach! Most pro players aren’t good roll models either but we let them keep playing!

I don’t think this has anything to do with forgiveness. Petrino can be forgiven for what he did at Arkansas, but that doesn’t mean you put him back in as the head coach.
A child molester can be forgiven for his/her crimes, but you don’t hire them as a daycare worker. Petrino has character flaws that are detrimental to the development of the players he was hired to lead. The key flaw to me is his lack of commitment as was demonstrated with the Falcons and his family.
Coaches are role models whether they like it or not. Petrino is not a good role model even though he may be a good coach. His actions go way beyond the gridiron and have had a negative impact on young men and women all over this nation. If I were an athletic director looking for a coach, I’d take a pass on Petrino.

Hire Petrino @ GaTech?!?!?
Sure. Why not. While we’re at it, why don’t we bring back Reggie Ball as our QB coach.
Petrino is a scumbag as proven by his actions while in Atlanta. As far as I’m concerned Arkansas WAS his second chance. And he blew it. In grand fashion, I might add. I’m not sure what Jimmy Johnson is smoking but second chances come only after time and a little contrition (of which I’ve seen none from ol’ Bobby…EVER) have passed between the problem and it’s originator.
I wouldn’t allow Petrino to coach a local rec. league team. He doesn’t deserve the honor of being allowed to do so. Certainly not at the collegiate level. Ask Warrick Dunn what he thinks of the guy. lulz. and when Dunn says something bad about a person, that’s REALLY saying something.

There is a bigger issue than the affair that you people aren’t seeming to process. This man hired an unqualified person over someone who was qualified, and then HAD SEX with an employee, which opens up the employer to all kinds of lawsuits. THAT kind of judgment does not deserve a second chance with that employer. NO employer that I know of would hire someone back that had opened them up to that kind of liability.

Bobby has a great mind for offensive football. He also has a tendency to make extremely poor decisions that effect his professional life. In this case his family life was also involved. As a Dawg fan, I hope he does not go to TN nor KY. The east is tough enough to win with Spurrier in it. Certainly don’t want to deal with Petrino, who is one heck of a college coach. He would immediately be a nightmare at TN and would make KY competitive in a few years.
Why are coaches expected to be role models? Why are they expected to be “Father Figures”? It would be great if they were but who knows how they really live? Who really knows their core values? Who really knows what their definition of being a man is? What being a husband is, what being a father is? That stuff should have been demonstrated at home long before kids get recruited. I know very well that some kids don’t get that at home and other people have filled that void be it a coach, a teacher or someone else, but it is unwise to rely on a coach who really see’s your kid as a commodity to become a role model. If my sons were big time QB’s, I would let them play for Petrino because he can develop QB’s. They would not play for him expecting him to be their role model.
Go back to Arkansas and fight it out with Saban, Miles, Sumlin, Mullen, etc. Stay out of the east! Stay away from Tech!

I’m a Tech fan and a Falcon fan and I would LOVE if Tech hired Petrino!!!
The Falcon fan in me can learn to get over it. Tech needs somebody to make our program relevant again and he might be the right person for the job. He is a good coach and a good recruiter!!! People need to understand that he got fired for doing something that alot of men do but the difference is he got caught!!! Put Vad Lee in his system and Tech is instantly better!!!

Any talk of him coming to Tech to coach is foolish. The Institute’s integrity trumps a man with his character ever coaching at Tech. Let alone the ramifications of him returning to Atlanta after what he did to the Falcons.

No I’m not a space cadet and I’m also not a Tech Grad but I am a person who’s thinking with my head and not my heart!!!! I agree what he did to the falcon was wrong but he accepted the job thinking that Mike Vick was going to be his quarterback not Joey Harrington!! Do you think programs hire coaches based on their people skills or their coaching skills?? Petrino is a good football coach he might not be a great person but he’s a good enough person that for the years he was at Arkanas parents of recruits thought highly of him to send their kids there!! Do you wanna keep winning 6 or 7 games every year and get slapped around by those idiots from Athens every year or do you wanna be relevant!!! I’m not going to renew my season tickets next year if something doesnt change. I guess all the Tech Grads and non space cadets can sell out Bobby Dodd like they’ve been doing!! Oh I forgot it’s never a sell out!! It’s about football not emotions!!!!

He stood before Arthur Blank and lied to his face. This was the worst thing he did not the leaving part. If he would have just said i’m sorry but the pro game is not for me, I want to return to college and I can’t pass up this opportunity. But when Blank ask him if he was still his coach he lied thru his teeth and said yes and less than 24 hrs later he was being announced as the head coach at Arkansas. Any SEC program who hires this guy has zero integrity.

I’m far from being a Petrino fan but the only thing wrong with his departure from the Falcons was the way he didn’t address his players. Owners and GMs can fire coaches at the drop of a hat but as soon as a coach leaves abruptly, it was the coach who did something wrong. Baloney. Total double standard.

Say what you will about the guys personal life, but as a coach, he’s a better football coach than Paul Johnson on his worst day. Paul Johnson and that gimmick offense is not the answer. Petrino might not be the answer to Georgia Tech’s woes, but he’s certainly a better option to run the team. What has Paul Johnson done to garner so much respect? The team can barely compete in the ACC as it is, and then to add insult to injury they’re taking L’s to teams like Middle Tennessee and BYU. Yeah, it’s not about “win at all cost,” but wouldn’t you mind at least having a consistently decent program? Georgia Tech might not be the wisest move for Petrino to make, what with the fallout from the Falcon situation still lingering. But, in my opinion, he shouldn’t have even been fired from Arkansas to begin with. Reprimanded? Yep. Suspended? Certainly. But not fired. He’s a good recruiter and he’s a good coach. He deserves a second chance.

Petrino is a sleeze of the highest order – he abandoned a football team after telling the owner who was paying a ton of money that he was staying (left like a thief in the night). He hires his college honey so that he can have something on the side. If Kentucky is crazy emough to hire him, that will make a second coach they have hired with a lot of excess baggage, and someone who is anything but a role model!!!!!!

Who at Tech wants this guy? Could you imagine Bobby Petrino coming back to Atlanta? One drunk night after a couple too many at the Cheeta he forgets where he works and rolls over to Dome by mistake. I don’t think we need a new coach at Tech besides we couldn’t make fun of the red panty bandit, ex athletic director in Athens. What some don’t recognize is Tech won’t close it doors if football goes away like many in the SEC will have to do. We don’t need this but somebody in the SEC will gladly take him.

Just because some quack on a message board suggests hiring Petrino…does not mean supporters of GT want Petrino. Not a single soul I know has made such a suggestion nor have I personally seen it on the three GT websites I am a member of. A. He simply in no way has the personality to be a Tech coach “as proven with his mistake”. B. He has never won big at his state U. which is so much easier than winning at Tech where we are considered second class citizens in football. C. What is he a defensive genius??? We still have a head coach that will be here till the end of next season at the very earliest. So is he supposed to be our next defensive coordinator? Lunacy!!!

The fact that people want him re-hired again shows how low the moral and ethics in the U.S. has become. Forgive, sure. Jesus tells us we should forgive. But that does not mean we do not have to suffer the consequences for our sinful choices. Petrino is all about “me” — he doesn’t care about his children, his wife, his staff, his players, or the business that employs him. Until he changes his conduct and character, he does not deserve to be a head coach anywhere.

The thing about Petrino is NOT that he made “a mistake” at Arkansas, but he has a somewhat long record of being disliked wherever he has been. Even though he was successful at Louisville, they were glad he left because he was so disliked. Look at the dishonest way he left the Falcons — lying through the smile on his face. The fans that buy season tickets are interested in someone who can run a clean program and win consistently in the SEC. Bobby Petrino has proven he can do that. While I don’t condone what he did, I’m far more interested in what kind of product he can put on the football field. Did Louisville run Rick Petino off because of his marital infidelities? I don’t think so.
