NFL players: Mike Smith tied for most underrated coach

Falcons head coach Mike Smith is 8-0 this season and 51-21 as Atlanta’s coach, and he appears to have earned the respect of players around the NFL, too.

In a Sporting News poll of NFL players, Smith tied with Houston’s Gary Kubiak for the honor of most underrated head coach in the league.

“Nobody gives them enough credit, but they’re always well prepared. He always has his guys ready to play. You can tell they’re very disciplined—not a lot of cheap stuff or anything like that.” — Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans said of Smith.

The Sporting News polled 103 players from 27 teams and players were not allowed to name their teammates or head coach for any of their answers.

Rex Ryan of the Jets was voted as the most overrated coach in the Sporting News poll.

I would think Rex Ryan is overrated too, but everytime I hear an NFL player or former player talk about who they’d want to play for, they always mention Ryan.

Regardless – we love Smitty. Right amount of intensity and personality, I think. Go Falcons!

Household names like Tom Kelley and Clarence Gaston have more World Series rings than Bobby Cox.

If it weren’t for the arms of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine & John Smoltz in the 1990s, Bobby Cox would have been fired years ago.

Considering the overall talent the Braves had in 1991-1996, they should have had at least 3 Championships, instead of the token one in a strike-shortened season. Please don’t bring up the meaningless 14 consecutive divisional championships. Its the big dance that counts in sports.

Reality………you just proved you know nothing about sports. Ask his players and players around the league whom they considered the best manager. The best coach/manager was the question posed by Roswell War Eagle. Nobody even comes in a close second!

Paddy,

You mean the players that floundered in the post-season 14x out of 15; or the manager that got outmanaged time & time again in big games?

Bobby Cox was a pushover. Larussa or Torre would have gotten more out those Braves’ teams from the 1990s.

Mike Smith has proven me wrong as I
never expected him to be this successful.
Glad to be wrong. His attention to details
has helped turn this team around. Whatever
else he is doing is obviously working.

Love Smitty, but Joe Torre was the best manager in Atlanta history. If he managed the 1991-1999 Braves, they’d have had at least three WSC – probably more!

I hear Atone Smith? is the fastest RB Atlanta has but I never see him get the ball. I would like to see that speed on a screen or off tackle run. Any reason he hasn”t gotten a chance?

For those that claim Torre was the better manager – don’t forget he managed here and didn’t get it done.

they need to look and learn from the Denver beating of brees. Presure him and cut him off up the middle. Brees is not good handling presure and he lives off the middle pass.

Sorry War Eagle. While I agree Smith is a great Coach, and unquestionably the best in Falcon history, The Braves had a guy, think his name was Cox, he won 14 straight division titles and a World Series, Coach Smith has a ways to go to be considered in the same realm with Coach Bobby Cox.

Coach Smith is a manager. Managers eliminate problems for good. Managers are problem solvers. Managers make an organization run like a well oiled machine. Smitty hired 2 great coordinators this year who are also managers. l love Coach Nolan’s defense. An entirely new scheme, plan, and execution every week to defeat the team we are playing. We do not play one type of defense and let other team’s offensive coordinators scheme to beat our scheme. That is the difference in this years team. Coach Koetter knows we are a passing team, so we throw the ball. If you have Tony, Roddy, Julio, Jacquizz, Harry, and Drew as targets, you use them. Do not put stars on the shelf. Falcons run the ball just enough and effective enough to keep’em honest. With Matty Ice executing the offense, we are improving every week. Great teams get better week after week, peeking in playoffs and Super Bowl. Hot teams have won the championship lately. Falcons keep improving, are hot in playoffs this year, and make Super Bowl. Smitty, Nolan, and Koetter will have 2 weeks to have us ready to compete for the trophy. Thomas Dimitroff, please keep bringing in star players. 2013 NFL Draft can set this Falcons franchise up for a dynasty. Draft SEC Stud Athletes who actually play tough Man football week in week out. Stud Linebackers to anchor our defense, return menace to get us field position, Huge Bulldozer Offensive and Defensive Linemen, and can we get the next great Running Back to go with our receiver corps. One stud defensive back a year too. Go get’r done Thomas, bring in guys to separate us from the pack. I hate the 49′ers. When they were winning, they outdrafted everyone every year. Thomas outdraft the rest my friend. Go Falons. Nice to have a dominant winner at last.
