Tar Heels kick both Wolfpack, bettors

The weekend was full of gambling surprises, as usual, but no outcome was more improbable for the teams and the bettors than the North Carolina-N.C. State football game that was decided in the final 90 seconds.

UNC, favored by 7.5 points, kicked a field goal to tie the game with 1:30 left and odds were high that a field goal or touchdown would decide the game in overtime.

But then the Tar Heels forced an N.C. State punt with 30 seconds remaining. This is where the fun began and those who had wagers started going crazy:

  • First, the Tar Heels returned the punt 73  yards for a game-winning touchdown, but even the extra point would only provide a seven-point winning margin, handing the win to those who took N.C. State and the 7.5 to cover.
  • But … the extra point snap was bobbled and for a second it seemed decided.
  • But … the holder scrambled, threw a desperation pass and it was caught for a  two-point conversion.

UNC wins by 8, N.C. State loses the game and so did the bettors who had the Wolfpack.

Other winners and losers from the weekend, according to R.J. Bell of Pregame.com:

  • World Series: The odds before Game 1 were 18-1 against the Giants sweeping as they did eventually ($100 won $1,800).
  • Notre Dame upset: The Irish were a 13-point underdog at Oklahoma and were the first undefeated team this late in the season to be a double-digit underdog and win outright since Ohio State topped Miami in the 2002 BCS title game. It stopped a streak of 16 consecutive undefeated teams that had lost as late-season double-digit underdogs (a $100 bet on Notre Dame paid $400).
  • Alabama: If Notre Dame played Alabama on a  neutral field at the moment, the Irish would be a 13-point underdog. … LSU is a 10-point home underdog to Alabama this week, the first time the Tigers have been that big of an underdog at home in a decade. Before the season, LSU was favored in the game against the Crimson Tide. … If Alabama played Oregon in a  neutral field as of this week, the Ducks would be a 3-point underdog.

Unless Alabama has a real bad game, with turnovers and penalties, nobody beats the Crimson Tide. And maybe not for a few years, or until Saban retires.

I bet spider has placed a bet. BTW wonder how much the pack had wagered on the game. Seems like the fix was in.
