Mettenberger says Clowney threatened him before game

It appears South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier’s gift of gab is rubbing off on his players — perhaps in a way that even Spurrier wouldn’t endorse.

According to news accounts, Gamecock defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and another player threatened LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger before Saturday night’s game in Baton Rouge.

From the Shreveport News:

“We’re coming for you, 8,” a South Carolina player told Mettenberger, who wears No. 8.

“You’re not going to make it through the game,” South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney said.

“The little guy didn’t have his jersey on, but he was a player – probably a defensive back,” Mettenberger said.

The incident provided added incentive for LSU’s offensive line, which held the Gamecocks to one sack and Clowney, the SEC leader, to none.

“The player was Clowney and a defensive back. They were right out here when I went out to do warm-ups,” Mettenberger said while in the LSU locker room, just a few feet from the field. “They definitely had a few choice words to say to me, but I’m guessing they’re looking dumb right now with the loss on their record. Obviously, it didn’t work out for them too well.

“I was protected very well for most of the night,” Mettenberger said. “We had a great game plan. They wanted me to get the ball quick out of my hands because they had a great defensive line.”

LSU’s left tackle, Josh Dworaczyk, told the News that Clowney’s threat motivated him to play even harder:

“Well, before the game, I don’t know if you heard this or not, but one of the guys from their team went up to Zach and told him that he was going to make sure that he didn’t finish the game,” said Dworaczyk. “And to me, that’s emotional. The coaches heard. Some players heard it,” Dworaczyk said. “I don’t know who it was, but it was a defensive guy. And so when that comes into this locker room …”

“I’m getting fired up just thinking about it now because Zach’s one of my best friends,” he said. “And when you hear that, it elevates your game that much more. It’s always your job to keep a quarterback clean, but when the threat comes out there, you step up and protect your quarterback with everything that you got. And I think our offensive line, backs and tight ends did a great job the entire night of doing that. And Zach was able to back cleanly and throw passes, and we’re a deadly offense when we can do that.”

If Clowney’s intent was to intimidate LSU, it didn’t work. The Tigers handed the Gamecocks their first defeat, 23-21, and were ranked no. 6 in the first BCS rankings released Sunday. South Carolina is no. 7.

As for Spurrier’s game week wisecracks about the two Death Valley’s, he got that thrown back in his face, even though the joke was aimed at Clemson.

“That was Death Valley,” LSU coach Les Miles said after the game. “That was the place where opponents’ dreams come to die — and it was spectacular.”

That make you feel better ?

I take exception to your point, and you like a child have nothing to say on-point; instead, preferring a Personal Flame post.

Trash talk is one thing… telling an opposing player they won’t make it through the game is another. Trash talk is barking at Mike Vick if you are a middle linebacker, asking if it hurt when you drive the other guy into the turf, asking a lineman if he can still hold if he is wearing a cast on his hand… The issue whether Mettenberger is sensitive, it is whether we should have players threatening to knock guys out of a game. Clowney gave LSU a rallying point… and they came out mad. No matter how you slice it it is just plain stupid to do such a thing. To me, it is like these idiots that brag about their crimes on Facebook and/or Twitter and get busted for it. IDIOTIC. I wonder if Clowney will be available for interviews the rest of the season?

JC is not a THUG asyou claim. Howver, take a look at a real THUG, #99. Dude gets manhandled/pancaked and then punches the LSU OL while he is on the freaking ground. Talk about dirty and cheap! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r76Fr-1hi6I

Gotta love the little sicko though don’t you. He was silent for quite a while on these blogs but now he is back to his usual, crying and complaining. Stay tuned for all of his magic statistics coming. About this time every year, he starts a full page of meaningless stats. to impress God knows who.

I can assure that Clowney did not say this… Zach Mettenberger knows what Clowney looks like we all do. That man is a huge and there is no mistaking him. This is made up crap and in my opinion Mettenberger owes Clowney an apology for even hinting that it was Clowney!! First of all he refers to him as a little guy…..You stand next to Clowney and see if you call him little!!!!!!!! BS talk from a whimpy quarterback is all this is!!!!!

Dave…You may want to go back and take at look at that video again. The LSU guy has ahold of #99’s facemask and will not let go.. With both hands by the way!!! So I would say that the LSU guy was the agressor!!!!

I don’t believe one word of that bullsh*t.Clowney has zero need to threaten anyone with words. That is a crap story told by a liar.I guess he felt a lie would jack his team up.I hope we get another shot at this bunch of liars. We did not play our best game at all and still almost won.Next time, they won’t be so lucky.

UMMMM… please re-read the article folks…He said specifically there were 2 and one was Clowney and the other was a little guy … it even says that Mettenberger thought he was a defensive back. Bias has a very strange way of making people see what they want to see instead of what it actually is. What a case study this would make.

It would also make an interesting case study that so many are willing to believe that Clowney said this!!!!! Carolina does not have a little DB and Clowney could scare the sh– out of Zach just by looking at him…..No need to say anything!!!! Zach said this to his players in the locker room before the game because he was scared he was going to get the crap knocked out of him, so he LIED!!!!!! Period and that is what ticks me off!!!

_______
Scared ?
_______

Zach Mettenberger led LSU up and down the field on Jadeveon Clowney all night long. South Carolina could not stop Zach Mettenberger leading LSU up and down the field all night long from the opening kick-off until the end of the game. Zach Mettenberger was scared of Jadeveon Clowney ? Huh ? South Carolina has NEVER won anything in football, never.

Bebe, those are all lies from a football team who plays way too tough a schedule for the likes of you. I maintained all season long that South Carolina could not possibly end up in the Top 10 with your schedule. You’re not man enough to be Top 10 with that schedule.

Beating Georgia means nothing. Everyone beats Mark Richt. Even as bad as Mark Richt is against good football teams, your Steve Spurrier is 4-4 against Mark Richt at UGA. What does that tell you ?

Cease and desist with your LIES that Zach Mettenberger was scared of Jadeveon Clowney, leading LSU up and down the field on South Carolina all night long. Does that look like Zach Mettenberger was scared of Jadeveon Clowney to you or did it look like Zach Mettenberger led LSU up and down the field on Jadeveon Clowney and USCe all night long ?

Cease and desist with your LIES that Zach Mettenberger called Jadeveon Clowney little. He did not, now did he ?

Cease and desist with your LIES that South Carolina does not have a little defensive back. Your entire latest Official Steve Spurrier Depth Chart is full of 5 little Defensive Backs. Isn’t it ?

Either Mettenburger doesn’t know who Clowney is or he’s just flat out a liar. Clowney’s position coach said it was impossible that Clowney said anything to Mettenburger because he was never anywhere near him prior to the game. Coach Lawing was with Clowney the entire pre-game.

Where does coach Lawling say that South Carolina doesn’t have a little defensive back ?

Where does coach Lawling say that Zach Mettenberger called Jadeveon Clowney little ?

“Lawing went on to say that he didn’t ask Clowney whether he made the comments”

What about this article in the Orlando Sentinel today Wednesday also South Carolina fans ?

“Clowney, 19, showed another side to his game, too. LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger said Clowney told him during warm-ups that Mettenberger “wouldn’t make it through the game.”

Mettenberger survived, and Clowney later said South Carolina’s front seven “didn’t come to play.”

Did you go to Orlando Sentinel and tell them coach Lawling said today Wednesday that he hasn’t watched the video even yet Wednesday 5 days later of Quarles punching the LSU player down already on the ground trying to get up ?

“Lawing said that he had not seen the video of Quarles punching an LSU player” This is Wednesday this article is written South Carolina fans. Do you really believe coach Lawling that he had not seen the video yet of Quarles punching an LSU player after the LSU player was on the ground trying to get up ? That what you really believe that Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday coach Lawling has not yet seen the video of Quarles punching the LSU player on the ground trying to get up ? Let me ask you this : Did you see the video ?

And, what about this one ?

http://www.fitsnews.com/2012/10/15/did-jadeveon-clowney-threaten-lsus-quarterback/

“USC sports information director Steve Fink did not respond to questions about the alleged Clowney threat.

LSU left tackle Josh Dworaczyk – whose job it was to block Clowney – told the paper that the threat motivated him and his teammates.

“One of the guys from their team went up to Zach and told him that he was going to make sure that he didn’t finish the game,” Dworaczyk said after the game. “The coaches heard. Some players heard it.”

“When you hear that, it elevates your game that much more,” Dworaczyk added. “It’s always your job to keep a quarterback clean, but when the threat comes out there, you step up and protect your quarterback with everything that you got. And I think our offensive line, backs and tight ends did a great job the entire night of doing that.”

They did. LSU beat South Carolina decisively in the trenches – particularly in the fourth quarter when an already worn-down defensive unit was repeatedly put back on the field thanks to inability of head coach Steve Spurrier’s offense to take care of/ move the football. Also Clowney – last year’s SEC freshman of the year and this year’s conference sack leader – did not record a sack of Mettenberger.

Clowney acknowledged that USC’s front seven “didn’t come to play” against LSU and that they would have to turn in a much better effort this weekend against No. 2 Florida.

He’s right … and they can start by saving their breath during the pre-game.”

What’s gonna stink for USc is if they lose this weekend and the Dawgs win out, which is very possible. Then that win in Columbia is meaningless, because the Dawgs will be in Atlanta.

If it wern’t for all the holding, clippin, and pulling the players down by the facemask the refs were afraid to call because of the 92,000 drunk fans he would have backed it up.I hope we can get them in a neutral site.. Tommy from S.C.

If LSU hadn’t been holding, clipping 50 yds. away from the play and dragging players to the ground by the facemask and the ref afraid to throw the flag on account of th 92,000 drunk fans it would be different I thought Clemson was dirty untill I saw LSU.

Your siding on your trailer needs pressure washing. Be careful about making comments about Columbia when it’s obvious that intelligence is not part of your upbringing.
