Former Bulldogs weigh in on S.C. blowout

Former Georgia Bulldogs had plenty to say on Twitter about UGA’s blowout loss to South Carolina Saturday night.

Some, like most fans on message boards, were angry over the Dogs’ effort in the 35-7 pasting. Others simply urged fans to keep supporting the team.

Here’s a sampling:

Former UGA and Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis: “I don’t care what anybody says, when you’re the #5 team in the nation, you DON’t give a performance like this, period!!”

Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle George Foster: “I’ve never been this ticked about a game I didn’t play in. I never thought I’d see a UGA team not show up for 4 whole quarters.”

Chicago Bears defensive back Tim Jennings: South Carolina is a tough place to play in!! Not to forget that they just tougher than us right now also

Former center Ben Jones, now with the Houston Texans: I bleed red and black no matter what happened tonight. The dawgs will bounce back.

Falcons linebacker Akeem Dent: When my Dawgs hurt….I hurt!!! I still bleed red & black

Drew Butler, punter with Pittsburgh Steelers: South Carolina is about to be ranked #3. Could have been UGA. Smarter to save it for the end of the season. Long road ahead.

Cleveland Browns receiver Mohamed Massaquoi: STILL LOVE MY DAWGS!

Bengals tight end Orson Charles: I still bleed red and black and still love my Dogs keep y’all head it’s a long season

Terrible and humiliating loss – perfect storm for sc. A short qb against the best d line in the country who averages 6′5″ and will all play in Sundays. I hate saying this, but kudos to spurrier. We lost 14-7 after the 1st round knockout.
Season breaks down as follows:
We will beat ga southern obviously. We will beat inept uk on the road and ole miss at home. It’s a three game schedule – auburn and tech may be down but it’s auburn and tech and anything can happen and every dawg fan knows it. It all comes down to jax – if I told you 11-1 would happen before the season – 99% of you would have taken it no question. That’s still very doable.
I do have a question… If we beat gators, gators beat sc and sc already beat us – what are the tiebreakers and dies overall record matter? I ask because sc plays Clemson and gators play fsu.

Year in and year out, it’s the same prblem. Mike Bobo is not a good offensive coordinator for the GA Bulldogs. He is average at most. Average coaches can use an awesome team to beat all the so-so teams but will never ever beat all the good teams let alone any great team. Just like the Atlanta Falcons and Brian Van Gorder, until the GA Bulldogs get rid of Mike Bobo as the offensive coordinator, the GA Bulldogs can forget about any thought of any national championship. Unfortunately, anything less than a national championship is never going to be good enough for a true fan!!!!! I’ve been saying the same thing about Van Gorder and Bobo for the past 4 years to 5 years. The Falcons finally saw it my way and got rid of Van Gorder. The results speaks for itself this year with the falcons. It’s time for the Bulldogs to do the same with Bobo as the offensive coordinator. He can have another job with UGA but offensive coordinator is not the job for him!!!!!

DEFENSE wins Championships! and UGA has provided a poor defensive effort so far. UGA has the talent on Defense to be the best in the SEC. Makes you wonder what in the heck is wrong with the defense?

The problem is not on the offensive side of the ball. The problem is the DEFENSE. Even if the offense couldn’t score against USC then the DEFENSE should have stopped the USC offense. The game could have been close if the DEFENSE were any good.

Give SC credit. They are a good team and could possibly give AL a run for the SEC title.

Not buying that.

AL wouldn’t let a pick get gently taken away the 2nd play of the game.
AL will not have slow middle linebackers trying to contain Shaw on the edge.
AL will not allow receivers to run free 10 yards behind them.
If Clowney can’t be blocked by the AL tackles, they will provide help with a tight end or RB.

Everyone one of these issues was related to bad coaching, bad game plan and an unwillingness of the clown BOBO to get away from having to send 5 receivers out. He should have gone to max protection and sent out 3 receivers. If Murray has time, he can hurt you. BOBO’s pride would not allow his offense be dictated to.

Did anyone see the shot of CMR with his hands in the air cheering when TN missed the FG early in the 4th qtr? My point is – that is the difference in CMR and every other coach out there. Instead of chewing the safety or DB out for giving up a 65 yd pass play – he cheers the fact the other team missed a FG (and not a game ending FG attempt). CMR is SOFT – and GA’s team continue to be soft as long as he is in charge.

Hire Kirby Smart at the end of season before he takes another job. He can lead this program to a NC – or let CMR stay and this is where we’ll be every year. Someone said it early – Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Mark Richt said his team was not FLAT Saturday.

South Carolina scored 35 points to nothing before Steve Spurrier with 10:45 left in the game emptied the bench. Our Special Teams still made up of mostly walk-ons gave up another punt return for a TD of 70 yards. And, our Offense could not score the whole game until Steve Spurrier emptied the bench and even then it took until 1:55 left in the game to score.

AARON MURRAY PRE-GAME : “Right now it’s a huge win for us to beat the No. 6 team in the country, to go into their home and beat them. It’s another SEC win leading to our ultimate goal of Atlanta and Miami.”

“ If UGA loses to S.C. this year but wins the rest of the scheduled games, then makes it to the SEC-CG and is not competitive, then I see a major shake-up in our staff by McGarrity. UGA has to beat someone ranked this year in my belief. I don’t think CMR & CMB get a free pass this year just for beating unranked teams. This team has the talent to win, but do they have the coaching? Its too late to do anything this year, but ride it out…”

JB July 2nd, 2012 10:02 am

“I agree Kingdaddy. Beating up on weak foe and losing to good teams ( not even great teams) is a pattern for the Dawgs the Last three years, And it’s not a lack of talent. You can read a lot of thing into Richt’s new contract, and I’m reading McGarity is not sold. Here’s more rope, and we;ll see.”

Congratulations to South Carolina

Where are you now ?

Seems to me there are a lot of posters who say my posts should not be allowed to be posted, who have failed to show up after the game to say I am right about Mark Richt all 12 years with only 3 wins in 17 games against teams who made Top 10.

Several things are still bothering me after last Saturday’s loss. 1) UGA should never lose two let alone three games in a row to a college like USC. No offense to USC fan’s but look at the overall record, we are 46-17-2 against USC. 2) It seems like every team we used to own is now breaking records against us. We always seem to let teams score more points in a quarter or get more points off turnovers in five minutes than they ever had before. When UGA starts bleeding mistakes and turnovers on the field we go into a shell and try to weather the storm instead of fighting to get points back. 3) We always play down to our competition. UGA has a habit lately of just barely beating teams that they should beat easily. On the flip side, we never play up for a big game. 4) After the performance against USC, other teams are going to be gunning for us. We got exposed and were very beatable last Saturday night. Florida might be a blood bath for UGA but don’t be surprised if we lose another game to a team that we should easily beat. I don’t have a magical answer to fix what is wrong with UGA football but the current plan is obviously not working in meaningful games.

Richt teams seem to play as split squads. The offense is schemed to score fast. Tons of long, low percentage passes, puts the offense in too many long situations and detracts from the notion of getting into a rhythm. You are either scoring fast or are three and out putting us on the wrong end of “time of possession.” This works against the defensive team, forcing them to be on the field too much. So in many of these games its the UGA offense working against the UGA defense. It’s not “team” football.

October 9th, 2012
2:34 pm

No use changing now. Maybe we should change the order in which we run the five plays we have. Maybe we should run up the middle when we usually run up the middle. The defense will be totally surprised! Or maybe we should try to force using Mitchell when the defense knows we are going to throw a screen to Mitchell. That should certainly lead to at least a 1 to 2 yard gain on 3rd and 8!

The talent is there. I think CMR’s fire in the belly went out the window when his wife was diagnosed with cancer in the spring of 2006. Some people deal with such things in different ways and I’m not sure there is any one right way. I think he re-prioritized football. In the face of your wife possibly dying football suddenly becomes a lower priority. Later that year he handed the play playing over to Mike Bobo and started taking a more CEO approach. He later undid that but I don’t think the “bite” has ever returned.
I am not faulting CMR for re prioritizing… I’m just trying to piece together why the Dawgs can’t step up any more. Every organization takes it’s personality from the top. CMR is a fine man and a surrogate father for many of these guys. They see his calmness and whether they want to or not they absorb that. Football is substitute war and SEC football is a World War level intensity. I just wonder if CMR realizes that he may not be able to overcome this. Again I am not saying that he is weak…I am saying he is human and this seems the only sensible reason that his record against top level program suddenly went south. It’s just a guess.

Mark Richt is a recruiter, and poor at X and O football coach who gets a few marginal recruits in-state and out-of-state because Bulldogs are a Top 10 Football Program who has amassed great players for 120 years now in a state which finds only 2 other states have more high school players who go on to the NFL. He is a Minister. As for why he “all of a sudden cannot beat the teams who made the Top 10,” hogwash to the N th degree. He beat # 4 vols in 2001 and stated he knocked the lid off this Top 10 football program, with 4 losses 2001 including to unranked Boston College and unranked 7-5 Auburn 2001. Some knocking the lid off. You bought into it. I said, here, that I did not like all the off-field issues, that Mark Richt failed to want to come here December 20, 2000 and in fact did not show up until February 2001 a few days before the Signing Day. He wanted, even then, I went on in 2000 and 2001, to go not only to his BLOW-OUT LOSS to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on January 3 where his high-power offense scored nothing shut-out, rather than be here. posters listed above in 2000 and 2001 told me it would be good for OUR PROGRAM that he went instead to the NC Game. You refused to listen to me. I posted on Access Atlanta all through the Vince Dooley years, Ray Goff years, and Jim Donnan years – every day. Then, Mark Richt in February 2001 wanted to go to a NCAA assistant coaches’ meeting. Vince Dooley put his foot down then and insisted he show up. You argued and argued with me with meaningless EXCUSES again. Now you fail to come in here and say, Thomas Brown – you told us so. In detail. In Spades.

2002 there was only 1 other SEC team who made the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 a 4-Loss Auburn. You said how great that Mark Richt did what no coach had done here at UGA “SEC CHAMPIONSHIP” and oh my what a great Christian. He played David Greene over DJ Shockley and got into it with Coach Donald Shockley. I took exception to THAT mostly on Athens Banner-Herald. When we went to Florida to play Ron Zook at the stadium which has the Gator Bowl every year, and went 0-11 on 3rd Down Conversions for the entire game, you said Terrence Edwards missed a wide-open pass route he ran which was floated way over his head by David Greene at mid-field. stated David Greene was great despite the fact that in 2001, he beat # 4 vols and NEVER in his football career after did he ever beat a team who made the Top 10. It was he had the most wins as a Starting QB ever, despite me trying to tell you that he lost to Ron Zook an unranked team in both Coaches’ Poll and unranked in the AP Poll Top 25 even. In a DOWN YEAR for The SEC. You refused to listen.

2003 again David Greene lost to all these top football teams, every one we played. You said I did not know anything about Quarterbacks as a db. I tried to tell you I was not stupid. I said then our offense sucked and offered-up our # 52 NCAA Total Offense all 12 years to you. You said I was a BAD FAN. You claimed I was a Georgie tek fan. You sent all kinds of nasty reports to the AJ-C and everywhere else you could think of to discredit me, never discussing MY POINTS. Steadfastly, you refused to discuss the points, just you’re a BETTER FAN than I and I the worse fan compared to you, you said daily to the AJ-C.

2004 was probably the MOST DISAPPOINTING SEASON YET, and David Greene FINALLY BEAT Florida in his last season. Again, nothing about the fact that we play 14-game seasons nowadays and comparing NUMBER OF WINS 2001 to 2011 to earlier years, is NOT comparing NUMBER OF LOSSES to the top teams. Florida was NO GOOD IN 2004. All you care is we beat them FINALLY and would not shut-up how great Mark Richt beat Florida.

2005 Mark Richt told us Joe Tereshinski III was a great QB and would beat Florida for us. Then, he rushed DJ back after his injury and still lost to Auburn, in addition to losing to Florida – 2 teams who had NO BUSINESS BEATING US 2005. Then, we beat LSU in The SEC Championship Game. WHERE WERE YOU ? Not there, that’s where you were, like you are NEVER THERE EVEN AT HOME GAMES. But, we were SEC Champions 2005 you pointed out to me in reply and how seriously I needed a doctor. With your high school education, you diagnosed me with ailments of the mind, despite my 3.88 GPA at UGA where I was a walk-on. I had lettered in 4 sports in high school. You don’t even know what that means to letter in 4 sports. It means that when there was a baseball game, I played baseball, when there was a track meet, I ran track unless there was baseball practice. I started at catcher my junior and senior years. You don’t know anything about soft hands or lifting weights or running fast. You just knew then and know now how great you are as a fan that YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO PLAY FOR MARK RICHT. You said I was hurting our recruiting. I said don’t you think the kids know ? You think they have not noticed or been told by opposing coaches, that in Mark Richt’s best years here, he NEVER beat a team making the Top 10 except # 6 LSU in 2005 by DJ SHOCKLEY, and even then ended up # 3 in every poll of just SEC teams worse than LSU and Alabama 2005 our “SEC CHAMPIONSHIP.” I went to the Sugar Bowl Game at the Georgia Dome and you said there never was a Sugar Bowl at the Georgia Dome. Yeah, there was and AGAIN YOU WERE NOT THERE.

2006 we beat # 9 Auburn. That’s 7 seasons ago. We’ve not beat none since. We lost to 2-win Vandie whose only 2 wins were over 0-12 Duke and 1-11 Temple in 2006 among our 4-Losses. You said how great we beat ACC teams 2006. Matthew Stafford was # 3 on Mark Richt’s depth chart at QB and Joe Tereshinski III # 1 and Joe Cox # 2.

2007 we got BLOWN-OUT by a sorry vols’ team and lost to 6-6 South Carolina while BEATING NO ONE WHO MADE THE TOP 10, while LSU beat 2 teams who made the Top 10. You said Mark Richt got jobbed. I said LSU beat top teams. The Polls corrected themselves. I presume your argument did NOT HOLD WATER TO THE VOTERS. Again, I was right.

2008 we won the Fulmer Cup national championship. Pre-season # 1 every poll of 27 polls. Talk about consensus. 21 players went out the night AP Poll made us # 1 and partied including beating up a hospital. When we played # 6 Alabama early in the year, we were beat 31 to NOTHING at HALF TIME at our house. Again, you were NOT THERE. Florida and UTAH beat Alabama, but we could not. By this time, I was convinced that you were causing my program more harm than good.

2009 Joe Cox was the best Quarterback, again. You bragged to me daily how his deep ball was the best of any deep ball in the nation and that you had ever seen. I said game 1 that Zach Mettenberger should have played vs Okie State, who did not even make the AP Poll Top 25 for 2009 but they beat us, Joe Cox with his chronic shoulder requiring him to miss 1 or 2 days’ practice every week all season long and the flu for Okie State. You said I would NOT have played Zach Mettenberger. I said yeah I would’ve.

2010 have to go back to 1955 back 58 years to find an UGA team who lost more game than Aaron Murray. You ran in here and bragged that you had me removed from every blog on the internet saying I just found the worst and never discussed the positive – despite the fact that Mark Richt has 13 horrible losses to unranked teams in his career and 3 wins out of 17 games who made the Top 10. You acted like it was too much to understand that we LOSE to EVERY team making the Top 10.

2011 we beat no one.

2012 we beat no one and do have no business being ranked # 17 as we are.

You said repeatedly that no one keeps up with the stats of who is in the Top 10. Yeah they do. I showed you site after site after site that do. You said only what the team is ranked at game time like South Carolina in 2007 who ended up 6-6 and not even in a bowl game, is all that matters.

Here, go read this blog yesterday :

I think you folks are going to see Spurrier kick butt at LSU this week and then at Florida. This is South Carolina’s year. I think USC will beat Alabama in the SEC playoff and then take the national title. As a
Bulldog, I was stunned by the score last week in Columbia. We can beat the fair-to-middling teams but not the big ones. As long as Richt is there, it will remain that way. Nice guy. Doesn’t know how to go for blood..
