Discuss the controversial Monday Night Football finish

The Seattle Seahawks’ prayer was answered late Monday night. The Green Bay Packers may pray they never have to play in a game with replacement officials on the field again.

Seattle beat Green Bay 14-12 on a disputed 24-yard touchdown pass as time expired at almost midnight.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw the ball into a mob of players in the end zone and the pass appeared to have been intercepted by the Packers’ M.D. Jennings, who had both hands on the ball. Seattle’s Golden Tate reached in and also got a hand in the ball and players from both teams wrestled for possession.

One nearby official signalled touchdown at the same time another official indicated Green Bay had the ball and that he was calling a touchback.

After a replay review, the game officially ended 10 minutes later but only after both teams were brought back onto the field for the required extra point. Some Packers players were seen searching for their helmets to complete the game.

Referee Wayne Elliott told a pool reporter after the game that the play was ruled as a simultaneous possession that was confirmed by the replay official.

“They both possessed it,” Elliott said.

But TV replays also showed Seattle’s Tate also illegally shoved Green Bay’s Sam Shields out of the way before leaping to try to catch the pass.

Replacement officials are being used by the NFL during a labor dispute with the regular officials, who were locked out by the league in June. Even before Monday night’s game, the players’ union had called on the 32 team owners to end the lockout, saying it is compromising the integrity of the game.

“Don’t ask me a question about the officials,” Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said after Monday’s game. “I’ve never seen anything like that in all my years in football.”

Packers guard T.J. Lang was more blunt, tweeting that the Packers were robbed “by the refs. Thanks NFL.”

The Packers got support from others on Twitter as well.

– Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman tweeted “These games are a joke.”

– NBA MVP LeBron James tweeted “I simply just LOVE the NFL too much to see these mistakes. I’m sick like I just played for the Packers”

– Wisconsin State Senator Jon Erpenbach tweeted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s office phone number, saying in a separate tweet that if the ending Monday did not spark an end to the lockout “this season will be a joke.”

The bizarre finish overshadowed a four-sack performance by former University of Georgia player Chris Clemons, who now plays for the Seahawks. All four came in the first half, tying an NFL record.

Lots of herd mentality on this one. See my post above. And, I note that the DB could not rip the ball from the WR even though he tried, and even though his leverage angle was superior.

I guess I should shut up. I mean the announcers said it wrong. Mark Bradley says it was wrong. So it must have been wrong.

Really, I think most of the unhappiness here is with the rule book.

Just another excuse to diparage the replacement refs. All of you, just as I, have seen the “regulars” blow calls since forever. Most recently, the Calvin Johnson TD that wasn’t. It just happens that we are having tightly-contested games going down to the wire. And how often does that occur? Who’s to say that a regular crew would not blow the same call? I heard Boomer Esiason say that the rules state the refs can only decide if the ball hit the ground…not possession. Admittedly, calls have been missed…the Ray Edwards unsportsmanlike-foul-that-wasn’t, for example. But, again, I do not recall the regular refs being infallible. Stop listening to blow-hards like S.A. Smith and Skip Clueless.

Roger Goddell is an employee of The NFL. He is basically paid to be The Mouthpiece for the owners. The NFL has a bunch of owners that are not camera-shy and a few that actually love microphones.

I haven’t heard a word from Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft, Pat Bowlen, Woody Johnson, Bob Irsay, The Rooneys, The Maras, The Glazers, The Little Guy in DC or Mr Arthur Blank. Or any General Manager for any team. Goddell’s job is to catch the flak.

If I were Roger Goodell I would get both sides in a room, lock the door, and not open it until an agreement was reached. Not even a potty break. :-)

THE NFL WILL NOT TOLERATE BEING EMBARRASSED LIKE THIS! HOPEFULLY ALL THE BITCHING AND COMPLAINING THAT IS HAPPENING ON ALL THE SPORTS SHOWS WILL AID IN THE CAUSE AS WELL! I COULD BE DEAD WRONG BUT I FIRMLY BELIEVE WE WILL SEE THE REGULAR REFS BACK IN TWO WEEKS! WHEN THIS BS FINALLY CONCLUDES IT WILL TAKE A WEEK FOR THE REFS TO ALL GET FITTED BY NIKE, SO, I SAY THEY COME TO AN AGREEMENT THIS WEEK AND THEY WILL BE BACK WEEK 5!

PAY THE DAMN REFS FIDEL GOODELL!!!

It was the right call and couldn’t have happened to a better group of guys. Pack is 1-3 in their last 4 games and on pace for a 4-12 season. Russell Wilson should have thrown down the Discount Double Take. Congrats, Seahawks, you were the better team.

See, here is the new rule. If the defender catches the ball but the receiver catches the defender then it’s a completed pass.

My “bad call” brick is now totally destroyed. I am boycotting anything related to the NFL until the real refs return. The NFL is now in a shambles, and has lost all of its credibility. Time to follow another “national pastime”. Forget the NFL!

You cannot convince me that the ref who signaled TD didn’t have money riding on the game. There is no other explanation.

Replacement refs have no control of the game – too many little “side skirmishes” that are being overlooked – the regular refs wouldn’t tolerate that nonsense and would keep things under control.

Please, Sports Fans…READ THE RULES. The issue is not with the Refs…it’s the rule book. The review is not about possession. Get on the rules committee (comprised ofowners & select coaches) not the refs.

Replacement refs or not, the side judge blew the offensive pass interference call that would have rendered the point moot.

Also, if you watch the replay, the side judge and back judge look at each other as they are making the call. It was like rock, paper, scissors. The back judge went up with his hands to signal a touchback and the side judge, thinking the back judge is signaling touchdown, throws up both arms confirming a catch in the end zone by the offense. It really shows the side judge’s lack of confidence in himself to make the call.

the old refs weren't any great shakes, either

I have read many comments but no one is mentioning the DB Jennings playing “Hero Ball”. I guarantee you that Dom Capers is not teaching “interception” in that scenario…most likely it is “KNOCK IT DOWN”. Going for interception is the “hero” move…knocking it down is a defensive move.

I think one the ref that called it a touchdown had his money on Seattle and the one that called it incomplete had his money on Green Bay. RIGGGGED!

ESPN’s whining is going to make me hurl. They are like the MSM, trying to make news rather than just reporting it. Gruden and Terico (sic) were screaming like babies, it’s really unprofessional. And gruden never complained about the union refs when he was coaching? yeah… right!

To all the people who thinks the NFL needs to cave to the refs I disagree. As a blue collar worker I am offended that the real refs are basiclly holding out for pensions. Most of these refs are already well off and get paid a nice check for officiating. How many of you get a pension for a part time job.

All of this could have been avoided if the defender had simply slapped the ball to the ground or knocked it into the stands. Instead, he wanted to pad his stats with personal glory of intercepting the ball. This has happened many times and resulted in a catch by the offense.
