Tech’s payback for loss fits to a ‘T’

Police say they have no suspects in the theft of the "T" from the Lane Stadium sign. Some Georgia Tech fans apparently engineered a bit of payback for the Yellow Jackets’ painful loss at Virginia Tech on Monday.

Someone made off with the “T” from the Lane Stadium sign outside the box office — a heck of a feat that left the sign reading “Lane S adium,” the Roanoke News reports.

Virginia Tech Police Maj. Gene Deisinger told the newspaper that the “T” had indeed been stolen.

While police say they have no suspects or leads, a Facebook group called “Only at [Georgia] Tech” posted a photo of the sign with the caption, “Lane S adium. Only a ech.”

The photo has since been removed from the site amid concerns it might encourage copycats.

Stealing “T’s” is a longstanding tradition at Tech; it began decades ago when students began stealing the T from the Tech Tower on North Avenue.

Some wags speculated that the jolly good fellows who stole the T may have been drinking their whiskey clear.

In any case, Virginia Tech fans had a ready — and stinging — response. As one of them posted on the Only at Tech Facebook page, “Y’all may have left with the T but you certainly didn’t leave with a W.

So proud of our team & fans for a tremendous showing in Blacksburg!

Al Groh’s defense is MUCH better and we will compete for the ACC title and most of all We Will Run This State in November.

I watched the game on TV and overall thought the Jackets did very well. The offense needs to step up just a little and mix up their plays a little more, but the game itself was a good old fashioned barn burner. And involved two collegiate teams competing as opposed to UGay in Athens playing a junior high school football team and removing Alabama from their schedule. But then again UGay prefers powder puff leagues to play in.

Great tradition that will eventually catch up with you legally. You can’t get by with pranks like this anymore. We all know who Runs this State! Go Dawgs!

Agree, Goldenrod, that the defense looked good but I wouldn’t bet the house on that November thing.

The High School/ I AA offense Tech runs has ran its course. Most ACC teams know how to stop it and we all know Georgia does. Until Johnson comes up with something a little more modern the bugs will continue to be mediocre at best.

Hey Bobby, UGA didn’t drop Alabama from their schedule by their own choice. The fact that 2 teams joined the greatest conference (SEC, duh) caused EVERYBODY’S schedule to change. UGA had no say in which game was dropped.

I don’t care whether we win or lose but I have a man CRUSH on Paul Johnson. He is our Moses and has delivered us to the Promised Land and out of the despair of Chan Gailey’s lost world.

We are now competitive in the ACC and CPJ has already beaten the Mutts once in his career and undoubtedly will beat them more.

It is clear we have now established a passing game to go with the nation’s best rushing attack and now our defense is light’s out, slightly below the level of Alabama’s but we shut that Cam Newton-like QB from VA Tech down.

There’s a new sheriff in town, we are lucky to have him, and his name is PAUL JOHNSON!

OK so now the AJC is endorsing and celebrating vandalism. Lets all start down that slipperly slope. I bet the German newspapers thought it was pretty funny when people broke windows on kristallnacht too.

I am sorry this option offense is going nowhere and in a hurry. Its time we hire a real football coach that runs a legitimate offense. yes the triple option is very fun to watch, but it just doesnt work anymore. There is a reason colleges dont use it anymore.

You nerds crack me up – Paul Johnson runs a high school gimmicky offense and has yet to win a bowl game. His record is like 2-12 vs. UGA, VATech and bowl opponents.

You don’t run the ACC, Clemson does! Your big brother UGA runs the state so you don’t run that either.

BubbaDawg: Come on, isnt that the traditional stereotypical retort whenever things are not going well on the Flats? Many of the brightest kids in Georgia are staying at home these days, to study at Tech and at UGA. Many of the doctors at my hospital are UGA alums, and I am pretty sure they can all spell pretty well, as well as saving lives…

HA! Stole that T just like we stole the Hedges in the cesspool in Athens in 2009.

Long live 45-42 those Hedges still taste good!

AJC please keep publishing these stories and we will try to steal at least a few items from each opponent.

@JacketAlum07…..”It is clear we have now established a passing game to go with the nation’s best rushing attack” – Really? You define a passing game as 96 yards? What a joke. Another tech QB makes another bone head decision with the ball in hand and game on the line.

Heluva – Pretty sad. You win one out of 11 and continue to post the score with some since of pride. A drunk student vandalizes an opposing teams school and you are proud. This is why you will always be georgia tech, a specialty school living under the shadow of the states true University and an embarrassment on the field. How was dragoncon. Did you meet any girls?

You Tech fans aren’t quite as bright as you would like to believe. You can’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Bama’s defense. That VT QB had an AWFUL night passing, mostly by his on doing and not your D or coordinator. Sorry to rain on your parade. At least at Auburn we now have a solid defense under former NFL coordinator Brian Van Gorder who is set to restore order.

Also how many times have you guys beaten the Puppies? 1 out of 12 years? That sounds like when Bama was fearing the thumb! War Damn Eagle baby!!!

While I don’t support the stealing of the T, I certainly do want to rip the Hedges out after we win in Athens in November! Can’t wait to bring home some more souvenirs.

I guess when we go to Athens this year we will have to get the T form over their locker room. Then it will be left saying hugs. The Dogs will get a double dose of the high school offense this year and probably get the worse dose the week before they play Tech… Georgia Southern is coming and they actually have the coach that was Techs offensive coordinator when they were out rushing the country, and was the only team to score 28 on Alabama last year. And no off week to prepare for them.

@ I Condone Stealing – “Old Man Football” must not be so bad. It is good enough to whip GT’s A$$ every year. Maybe you should concern yourself more with the “brand” of football GT plays considering it has produced but a single victory over UGA in the past decade. Glad you guys set your standards so high.

I thought the game was pretty dull and boring. Neither team looked especially good at anything. Well maybe the punting after not being able to move the ball was ok. Typical GT football. A crush on Paul Johnson? Seriously? Sad? At any rate…GT, keep on looking forward to November. It’s pretty sad that you all have to pick one year out of how many???? to brag about. Bring it on down to Athens in November because when the dust clears, the hedges will still be in place and UGA will still RUN THIS STATE!

I’m a little disgusted by the AJC and Georgia Tech’s pride in vandalism and theft. It caps off years of classless behavior by Georgia Tech fans toward Virginia Tech following losses (5 in the past 7 years) As a Virginia Tech Alumni living in Atlanta, I can say I have never encountered a more disrespectful and disgusting group of fans. In 2007, months after April 16, my husband and I as well as several other groups of VT fans were met with “We may not win football games, but at least our whole student section is still alive” taunts following a 27-3 loss by the Jackets. In 2009, while walking to the game we saw a group wearing shirts that said “Go Jackets, Cho the Hokies!” When I pointed out that mocking the death of 32 innocent people was not only disrespectful, but absolutely disgusting their response was “I think you’re upset VT kids aren’t as clever.”

We are clever, we just have class.

At Virginia Tech, there is a program called Hokie Respect – Respect for yourself, for your campus, and most importantly respect for our opponents and fans. I think it would be nice if Georgia Tech thought about instituting a similar program. Until then – enjoy our “T” as it can be replaced. We will enjoy another “W”.
