Gabby Douglas draws fire for racism claim

Note: Commenting is now closed

Has Gabby Douglas gone from America’s sweetheart to America’s lightning rod?

The Olympic gold medalist is under fire after she said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that she was the victim of racism at the gym where she trained in Virginia Beach.

She told Winfrey about one incident in which a teammate at Excalibur Gymnastics told her to do something because she was their slave.

“I definitely felt isolated,” Douglas said in the interview. “I felt, ‘Why do I deserve this? Is it because I’m black?’ ”

Her former coach and others associated with Excalibur blasted the claim.

“Really, I was shocked and very hurt,” former coach Dena Walker told NewsChannel 3 in Hampton Roads.

Gustavo Moure, CEO of Excalibur, went even further, suggesting that Douglas was lying.

“I wish to defend the children that trained with her and supported her when she attacks them with these allegations,” he told E! News. “Is Gabrielle a credible person just because she is an Olympic champion? She is not giving any names or dates, leading us to believe that the accusation is fake.”

“Gabby’s remarks were hurtful and without merit,” he told GymNewstics.com. “We’ve had more African-Americans in elite and on the national team than any other gym in the country.”

Former teammates also blasted her.

“This is absolutely ridiculous,” Randy Stageburg, a former National Team member, told GymNewstics.com. “Gabby was never a victim, in fact many would say she was one of the favorites. I am not saying that she never felt bullied because when you are in a sport with a bunch of girls it is bound to happen. However, anything that she may have felt was never about race and I can assure you everyone at some point has felt bullied.

“I watched Dena open her home to Gabby, feeding her, taking her to gym, and allowing her to stay over her house whenever Gabby wanted to,” he said.

She never made a racist remark. She only told what happened to her and she WONDERED was it because she was black? The trainer was not around all the time, how does he know what was said? Why is he defending the others? She was not talking about him or the gym, only the girls there.

The problem is even hinting at racism and claiming it was the reason why she ended up going to another gym makes this place look bad. To say otherwise is just not living in reality especially when she brings these charges up when she’s very unlikley to be doubted.

Why is racism so unacceptably frowned upon when spoken about? Sadly many put more emphasis on not speaking about it than they do stopping it.

Wow, America’s sweetheart goes on Oprah and now race has to come into it. Of course, because it is Oprah who pulled her support of Hillary Clinton to tell her viewers to vote for Obama. Want to play the race card Oprah, why did you only have Gabby on the show, what about the rest of the team???

I saw the interview. I do not think that Gabby singled anyone out. She expressed how she felt and how the actions of some of the girls made her feel. She never put the gym down, she expressed that if SHE wanted to go to the next level, then SHE would need to make a change. There are so many other things in the world to worry about. I’m sure the old gym will get a boost in enrollment, because of Gabby being their at one time.

A hit dog will Always bark. Gabby only spoke about her personal experience. We all know people will do behind close doors what they would NEVER do in public. Why not acknowledge her experience, and as the experience and pay more attention. She didn’t say anything negative regarding her training. So sad the trainer took this out of context and so personally, makes one wonder.

Wow, can she not talk about how she felt, I hear “oh she may have been bullied” but it was not because she is black, whatever the reason she was trying to understand why it happened that all people? Oprah with silly question but still Gabby talk about how she felt and no amount of media interviews from people that were not there or would even admit they bullied her would change it. I guess the storm is not big enough to blow this story up

Gustavo Moure, CEO of Excalibur and Randy Stageburg, a former National Team member remind me of a couple of chapters in Sharon Foster Ewell’s The Resurection of Nat Turner” were Turner is trying to explain to a white friend (since childhoodm and who taught him to read) how he steadfastly listens to his problems, but when Turner explains his sorrows, his friend tells him that he’s wrong, that he’s not experiencing what he complains of, that he should be a grateful and happy slave. He can read, he has no responsibilities, that the hardships of being a captive are negligable and inconveniences at best. Gabby is not President Obama, she can speak honestly to how she feels and is not obligated with a burden of making white people feel good about themselves.

No one can tell her what she experienced. How can speak so confidently about something that she said she experienced? She does not have to give names, times or dates. That is her account, her testimony and shame on them for questioning her credibility she has nothing to gain by disclosing this information but the gym definitely has something to lose, however they are not responsible for the actions of mean spirited childish comments.

The only people playing the so called “race card” are white people who invented the term. If Gabrielle some girls called her their slave, I believe it happened. She didn’t accuse anyone of racism, but it was obvious she was hurt by the term. The former coaches have no idea what the other girls might have said to Gabrielle when they were away from the adults. Kids can say stupid and mean things; or they might have used the term “slave” innocently, not realizing that it was demeaning to blacks. Either way, calling Gabrielle a liar is an overreaction.

This young lady is talking about her experience and yet you have people accusing her of “playing the racecard” whatever that is. It is what it is and dogging her out for speaking of her experience is not going to change it. Sounds to me like the trainer, etc. are in denial not Gabrielle. As for the slams against Oprah…always been jealousy and of course the remnants of her endorsing the President instead of Hilary Clinton..

Wow, first of all, she stated she was the only African American on her team not at the whole gym!! She also accused one of the teammates not the whole gym! This gym sucks for calling her a liar and claim they are hurt. Instead they should have just stated they were sorry for her experience, they weren’t aware of it, and this type of behavior is not tolerated! I can see why she left that place, the owner Dena Walker and their CEO/President Gustavo Moure are jerks! I think they’re feeling SOUR GRAPES because she left their gym for better coaching and she actually made it and became the CHAMPION!!!! Screw this gym! I live in Virginia Beach and I have two girls 4 and 5. I was thinking to take them for lessons at Excalibur but seeing the reaction of the owner and administration and its members, there is NO WAY I’m taking my girls there to train!!! I’d rather go across town which is what I’m going to do!!

She commented that she felt isolated and that one of her teamates said she should clean the bar because she is their slave. Why would this cause an uproar? The truth hurts. People don’t like to look at themselves in the mirror or be called out on for their behavior. Truthfully, I wish Oprah had not taken the conversation in that direction. I wish the interview had stayed positive, especially considering it was a white family that took her in while she reached her goals. On another note: when Oprah brought up gabby’s hair and Gabby said I don’t want to focus on that, did you all pick up on Oprah’s nastiness when she said “well I do”. In that moment I saw Oprah as a big fat bully.

My, My, My That ugly race card is upon us again. Let me tell you as an retired coach there is nothing more catty as young girls. They have a pack mentality, usually with a leader that is out to show her power. If one individual made a comment that would not surprise me. Young girls can be extremely mean especially when jeasouly and envy may be present. If the situation were reversed and Douglas were white in a predominately black gym she just might feel just as isolatted.
The issue here is that Oprah loves controversy. It helps her ratings and she needs the ratings on her new net work she will play any card availably. Why didn’t Oprah have Douglas on before she won the Gold Metal if she wanted to discuss Douglas’ color issu? Just wondering.

So sad people criticize another for truthfully speaking about their experience. A person’s perception is their reality. Gabby is a beautiful, talented young lady who speaks well and has GOOD sense. It’s amazing how the word RACISM always strikes a different nerve, especially when experienced by an Afro American.

This wouldn’t be the first time that adults ignored bullying. Nor would it be the first time where those in charge ignored the fact that someone in the minority was being bullied. It’s funny that in this version the bullying is being downplayed by someone using the line that everybody is bullied, and this is the type of thing to expect, when you put a bunch of girls together. That man should be thanked for backing up the story, and showing that at that gym, instances of bullying aren’t going to be addressed.

Welcome to life as an African-American, Gabby. These little slights and insults are just of part of what many of us face on a daily basis. Noone outside the race would ever know or understand: these comments and attitudes are very hurtful. I would think even more so for a young girl growing up and practicing her sport away from her family and in a predominantly white environment. Oprah knows this and simply gave Gabby a chance to pronounce that she has known this type of insensitivity. Gabby never attacked the perpetrator or accused the gym and its staff of anything. All can be forgiven for errant children who say and do hurtful things. But adults who deny and defend — that’s another matter. It’s why the beat goes on.

What she said, set out below, seems to indicate something more pervasive than a single teammate, so I can see the people who run/own the facility being upset if they would not tolerate such remarks were they aware such remarks were being made.

“I was just, you know, kind of getting racist jokes, kind of being isolated from the group,” she said. “So it was definitely hard. I would come home at night and just cry my eyes out.”

“One of my teammates was like, ‘Can you scrape the bar?’” she said, as quoted by Yahoo. “And they were like, ‘Why doesn’t Gabby do it, she’s our slave?’”

Let me first say I’m a huge fan of Gabby’s. My daughter does gymnastics, so of course I love the sport, and was pulling for Gabby from the first time I saw her compete. With that being said, I feel all people at some point in their life has been picked on or discriminated against. For me personally, I grew up with a father that could/would never hold down a job, so we always lived from week to week. I never had clothes that were in style, nor did we live in anything that you wanted people to visit. I was always picked on and made fun of, as I child I hated my life. I feel bad for her because someone made her feel like she was different because of her race, but I was made to feel different because of my family’s financial status. Unfortunately, it’s called life and we have to make the best of what we have or whatever circumstance we’re given. I chose to make a better life for myself, and to raise my children to love other people no matter what!!

Racism in this Country has turned into “The Little Boy that Cried Wolf”. He did so, so many times when the wolf wasn’t there, that when the wolf finally did appear, nobody believed him. The race card in this Country has been played by supposed prominent leaders and used for personal or political gain. So much so, that you cannot even recognize true racism when you see it. Tawana Brawley, The Duke Rape Case, The Trayvon Martin case, the idea that someone won’t vote for the current President, The Tea Party movement; everyone wants to cry racism before reviewing all the facts and they know it is a way to garner attention and create a firestorm.

This supposedly happened in Virginia Beach. What about the two reporters who were violently beaten from the Virginian Pilot Newspaper? If it weren’t for supposed racism, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have to go find real jobs.

I am on the fence about the veracity of the latest allegations put forth by Gabby. I started questioning her ability to tell the truth after she threw her own father under the bus, alleging that he abandoned the family, while knowing full well that he served three consecutive military deployments. So anyone that lies on their own father is capable of telling lies about anything if they feel it will further their interest.
Not saying that her latest allegations are lies…I am just on the fence and have no faith in her ability to tell the truth.

dmr, what does two reporters getting beaten have to do with this story? That makes no sense. Bullying is wrong, racism is wrong, beating people up for no reason is wrong. It’s not a game of trying to one up anyone. Why in the world are you bringing Sharpton and Jackson into the discussion, they aren’t even mentioned in the story.

It’s also extremely ignorant to make comments about what happened if you weren’t actually there.

Boo, when did Gabby say that all white people are racists? Maybe you should stop being so defensive, and start using critical thinking skills to understand what she said. You and everyone else who is upset by what she said should really stop and think about why are you so angry. The same goes for the person who wrote this article, and feels like Gabby’s experiences should make her a target.

Vee

August 29th, 2012

Let me get this straight. Because Gabby didn’t tell anyone about her experience while she trained at that gym, it didn’t happen? So, are we not to believe all those little white boys who said that they were molested by priests and Sandusky because they didn’t tell while it was going on? Wow.

It saddens me that people want to either discount or pretend that racism no longer exists. It exists more subliminally than during the slavery to Civil Rights eras. As for Gabby, she was asked about her experience, and she answered the questions. As a child, I, too, was bullied–by my own people (no “race card” here)–and I didn’t tell about it until I became an adult. As she probably did, I put on a front, like the teasing didn’t bother me; but it did. (Ironically, when I told one of my tormentors of how his words had hurt me when we were children, he said that he treated me that way because he liked me.)

Many who are bullied don’t tell for several reasons. They fear retaliation, rejection, and, as evidenced in this case, disbelief. What if Gabby had told Excaliber about her experiences? There would’ve been a fifty-fifty chance that they would have or would have not believed her. Based on their responses to her comments, it is safe to believe that her claims would not have been believed.

To the “fan(s)” that Gabby has lost due to telling her story, you were not a true fan(s) anyway. You just wanted her to smile and keep her mouth shut about what happens in the real world. She is a human being who has the right to express herself. It is so unfortunate that this child has faced so much foolishness, despite her achievements–from her own people (the hair stupidity) and those that are ignorant to racism–white and black.

I heard through the grapevine that Gabby left her gym in Norfolk to train in IOWA to get to the next level. What is not out in the public eye is the fact that Excalibur actually let her train on CREDIT (without paying)since they saw the ability in her to acheive her greatness. Gabby left this gym without one word of notice and moved to IOWA to train while stepping out on about 21k worth of payments due to the gym. I think this is a tactic to get Excalibur to forget about what she owes and discredit the gym at the same time.

Sandee, don’t talk about other people’s experiences as if you were there. Her father did abandon his family, and he joined the military. Joining the military doesn’t excuse what he did before he enlisted, nor does it change the fact that he cut off contact with his daughters, and just suddenly popped back up at the Olympic Trials. Gabby not hiding the details of what happened isn’t an example of throwing her father under the bus, it’s about someone being honest about her life. Why should she lie to protect him, or the people at her old gym who mistreated her?

While the battle for civil rights was brewing in the southern states of America in the 50’s, a concurrent battle was festering in Mount Vernon,NY. Although the schools were integrated, there were still troubling events which took place overtly. For me, I came face to face with racism first in the Dance Club in the gymnasium after school. And later at a student debate off campus. The Gym teacher suggested that I create lesson plans for the following year. She would give me an opportunity to teach after school the following year. And that is what happened. I came in as the dance instructor; the other student instructors left. This was 1955. The Gym teacher took one step to end discrimination in the school which I feel was an important step for me. And certainly many teachers have had to right civil wrongs when prejudice reared its ugly head in northern schools. Prejudice is prejudging a person. Fear seemingly the motivating factor. The second incident took place during a debate off campus. I sat in for a member who was unable to attend. The topic dealt with integration in Mount Vernon. One girl mentioned that she would not purchase anything from Fourth Avenue ,if African American sales persons were hired. Another mentioned that whites would move away if African Americans moved into her neighborhood. These statements were shocking. The blatant resentment of persons of color from a group whose ancestors had known prejudice, intolerance, and incapable trials was unfathonable. If the 50s were troubling, the 60s were turbulent. And even today the content of one’s character, innate ability and merit are ignored as institutionalize racism makes it possible to look only at a person’s skin color, hair texture, and facial features. Gabby’s triumph over adversity is one small step in the right direction. Keep on stepping, Gabby Douglas. Enter your comments here

People you do realize there is a difference between being bully and something being racist, right? Just because you’re being bullied doesn’t means it being done due to color. Also hate to break your heart you don’t have a lock on the only nationality to have been slaves yet you’re the only one that wields it as a sword when things don’t quite go your way. Japanese used Chinese slave labor, Irish were used as slaves, Greeks, Russians, Jews and on and on. Let’s don’t forget that every country Rome conquered, those individuals were either turned into slaves or forced to fight. If anyone deserves a pity party it would be the American Indians, whose land was taken away from them. And yes blacks had a hand in it, anyone here heard of Buffalo soldiers? In any count this is a little girl who is trying to make sure her 15 min of fame go just a little longer. In another month everybody will be going Gabby who?

Love how he/she stated that Gabby ‘was not a victim but one of the favorites.’ And in any case, if you weren’t a part of it, how would you if she was bullied or not while she was there. Shame on this gym for implying that she may have been lying. She could have very well had a single or group of people saying snide remarks to her. Gabby wasn’t accusing the gymnasium, she was just telling a situation that OPRAH practically pushed her to discuss. And shame on the news for blowing it up like this. Yes, racism and racists still exist. Ignoring it will not make it disappear. Just because Gabby excels at her sport it does not mean that she has not been a victim of ignorance. Yes, the society is different from when I grew up. I am in my late 50s. It should be noted that every one in my family has experienced some form of racist slur or ignorant behavior by ignorant white people, within the recent past. Not all of whom have been poor whites from rural areas. These problems will never cease until the white community overcomes its false sense of superiority.

I am always amazed at how people get so offended when someone broaches the rather uncomfortable topic that is RACISM. One thing I have learned over the years is that too many people have it all wrong. They expect that when a person reaches a high level of success and fame that they should just shut up and be happy that the “good folk” allowed them to get through, as if it was some sort of “handout” that they should be thankful for given the fact that they are after all, a “minority”.

This is a 16 year old girl who simply recounts her personal experience coming up in a sport where typically there was no one else who shared in her cultural experience. The Williams sisters spoke of similar difficulties. Are they “lying” too? Why does she need to lie??? She is smart enough to realize though that she has a PLATFORM on which to stand and tell the truth about how this endeavor has not been an easy road for her and some of the things she experienced. I can speak to the same things, as I have experienced and many who venture down “out-of-the-norm” paths especially people of color, have. Like someone suggested, no coach is around at all times, obviously as a child in the situation she might feel intimidated to speak up. Many of the reactions here clearly demonstrate why. Face it, racism is and always will be, especially as long as we continue to remain in denail or indignant outrage mode about it.

They are upset now, because someone young, credible, famous, and in your face is saying it does exist. It is not Jesse Jackson saying it. It is not Barack Obama saying it. It is not Harold Ford saying it. It is a sixteen year old former nobody. White people have steam coming out of their ears about this, because 300 years of training is no match for this little girl. This is a very young girl that made a very poor choice in making this claim, real or not. I can see endorsement deals drying up as we speak.

The pure, unadulterated truth is that almost every person on the planet has been the victim of some form of bullying and/or other isolating incidents at some point in their lives. Is it right? Nope. White folks are in deep denial about racism. That is understandable when you started an abomination that won’t go away. However, there is help. Admit that racism exists. Educate your children and your friends and family about it. Be a bulwark against racial jokes, stereotypes, prejudices, and innuendos. Take a stand against racism in all quarters where you have anything to do with it.

The more you say it don’t exist is the more you will get engulfed by it. The more fearful your communities will become. Remember; now- this is an enemy you say don’t exist, so you won’t even know when it is your own house until it eats you alive.

Welcome to the powder keg of American Society. When something is said that might possibly be seen in a racial light, people scramble to the side of the issue they want to take, based on their emotions. I understand why she said what she said. I also understand (although don’t agree with) those who feel hurt by it. But a fair assessment of her statement simply shows she is VERY sensitive (perhaps overly sensitive in light of how she has been honored) to the issue – as were all those who rose up in dispute of what they THOUGHT she was implying. Perhaps it is acceptable to be black now, as long as you don’t talk about racism.

Ramzad- your enslaved ancestors have been dead for 150 years. My ancestors who may or may not have owned a slave have also been dead for 150 years. I cannot be held responsible for their actions and I don’t owe you or your people anything other than respect, provided it’s given in return.

Football stadiums are sold out every weekend to watch predominantly black players. The vast majority of paying customers are white. Basketball is a predominanlty black sport yet PLENTY of whites attend and cheer.

Baseball needs more blacks? WHY? It is the responisbility of MLB to help with this? WHY? Is it the responsibility of the NBA to see more whites in the league? Affirmative ACtion? Really? How bout I just hire the best candidate for the job? How bout I enroll the most deserving students in my university instead of filling a quota?

White folks should also remember that in a population sense- you are weakening statistically. It does not make sense to continue hug up racism and deny its existence at the same time. You are going to have to share America with all the minorities here and the ones that are coming. It only make sense to get to know your neighbor. Insulation from minorities is not an option.

Racism exists alright!! But it’s not just whitey that is to blame!!! My ancestors are guilty of terrible things when it comes to equality, but I’m not my ancestors and two wrongs have NEVER made a right. I see more accusations of racism far more than I see actual acts of racism. In my opinion, the less it is spoken about, the less it happens or becomes an issue. Judge your fellow man by his or her actions and not their race/gender and prejudice WILL be a thing of the past. HOWEVER, looking for it in every day life will never allow it to fade away. YOUR ATTITUDE DETERMINES HOW FAR YOU WILL GO IN LIFE!!! Write that on your mirror and read it out loud every morning and your life will improve tenfold. Go Falcons!!!

Ramzad- of course our numbers are dwindling. It’s not a status symbol in our community to see how many kids we can father by different mothers. It’s not our goal to have 5 kids we can’t take of and then stick our hand out because we are dirt poor and then ask the white man (who you love to point the finger out) to pay for you. Hispanics probably out number all of us!! What a great deal they have!!! Come to America where it’s a better standard of living, don’t actually come here legally, don’t have to pay for insurance (because the white man will do it) and not only will we provide your child with a free education but we will pick your kid up and take him to school and provide them with meals at a reduced cost. We will also make sure that signs, atms, etc. are in your language.

How do you think the roads in the projects are still useable? The airport? Pretty much everything that is taxable is paid for?? The black community?? HA!! Careful to bite the hand that feeds you too hard.

I figure by the time my kids have kids whites will be on level with blacks and hispanics. Everyone will be financially strapped because the whites can’t afford to continue to pay for their own families AND yours. Working hard is already becoming a moot point because I’m just going to give that extra money to someone else.

Disappointed you are obviously blind. Being an Olympic gold medalist has nothing to do with the obstacles and ignorance she endured to get there. The ignorance in this country is amazing. Gabby did not play any race card, she told a personal account about an experience she had at a gym she trained at. Gabby did not say the gym was racist, Gabby said a few team members made racists remarks. Who are you to tell her that her experience was not true. You should like many Americans who think slavery didn’t happen, or “oh it wasn’t that bad.” You are ignorant to think that racism is not present in today’s society.

@ DMR – The Trayvon Martin case was racially motivated, George Zimmerman has a violent criminal record that was concealed by his Father who was a judge. George Zimmerman was told not to follow Trayvon Martin…period. George Zimmerman was told by the Sanford Police department that “Neighborhood watch captains cannot carry firearms!” and lastly Trayvon Martin’s Father lived in the gated community. George Zimmerman wanted to kill and he did, sorry to say that race played a factor. I live 30 mins from Sanford,Fl and I can tell you first hand that Sanford,FL is stuck in the 1960’s.

I do agree that the Duke Rape Case is a perfect example of using the race card for the wrong reason.

Until America acknowledge it’s racist pass against all race, America will never heal as a nation. But yet America can acknowledge the Jewish holocaust, which never happened on American soil and can donate billions of dollars. There is something wrong with that picture.

Two paths can be taken. The success story of the black man who rose up above growing up in “the hood” around drug dealers in one family home with 5 siblings and made something of himself. Or the one who uses their childhood as an excuse. Which one are you?

It’s not my responsibility or obligation to take care of the less fortunate because of something my great great grandparents may or may not have done. Does racism exist? I’m sure it does. If blacks don’t want to be grouped together as “thugs” then you can’t group white people together as white, ignorant, and/or blind bunch of people who owe your community something.

Fact is I am black, and I love white people. Individually, they are usually thoughtful, polite, helpful, friendly, passionate; just like people like other people to be. I frequently say “Thank the Lord for white people;” particularly when I stack them up next to some of my own- negros.”

However the same white person who helps you out at the dead of night would make sure you don’t get a job where he works or don’t get an apartment in the complex where she lives. The big problem is when white people group-think. They even have one big Group-think University called the Republican Party. When they get into the mob mentality it is usually lethal for minorities. From a group, they can kill a minorities soul in ten seconds flat. They have a special aptitude to be viscous on the human spirit.

Individually they will challenge racism, but in a group when the in-group out-group war starts racism is a panacea to everything. But white people are humans with all the evidence revealed in Romans 3:23. I have compassion on them, because they have picked up this mantle of superiority over other humans, and now in this new Dark Ages of our civilization they are stuck lugging it around.

Hatred and jealousy based on race is not one way, it just takes more than one to start the growth of this poisonous weed, and many to make it a tree. Let it die.

Galations 5
13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.(V) But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a];(W) rather, serve one another(X) humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b](Y) 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit,(Z) and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.(AA) 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.(AB) They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want.(AC) 18 But if you are led by the Spirit,(AD) you are not under the law.(AE)

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality,(AF) impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.(AG) I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.(AH)

22 But the fruit(AI) of the Spirit is love,(AJ) joy, peace,(AK) forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.(AL) Against such things there is no law.(AM) 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh(AN) with its passions and desires.(AO) 25 Since we live by the Spirit,(AP) let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited,(AQ) provoking and envying each other.

This is such a crock. Gabby never made any claim of racism. Gabby never said anyone bullied her. She said she felt isolated and that she wondered if the treatment she experienced was based on her race. We may not like it, but that is how she felt. The media – including Oprah – are attributing their own interpretations to Gabby and Gabby is being blamed for it. If the media really wants to jump on someone about this, jump on Oprah. She’s the one that twisted Gabby’s words and she’s the one that turned what Gabby actually said into what appeared to a claim that Gabby was bullied by racist.

Ramzad- it’s lethal because it requires everyone to be responsible for themself. Again, it is not my obligation or responsibility to make sure that the minority communities are ok. Asians don’t seem to have a problem excelling in this country. Middle Easterners seem to be doing just fine. Do you teach your kids to work hard and accept responsibility for their own actions or do you teach them to do whatever they want because someone else will fix their problems for them.

THe projects and inner city poor families are riddled with one parent homes who have multiple kids. IT IS NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY TO BAIL THEM OUT. Behavior is not changed when accountablity is erased.

Everyone cannot be on a level playing field, it’s just not possible, uless of course you lower the playing field.

I am so sick and freakin tired of working hard, supporting my family and being a responsible citizen of my community by paying my taxes and paying back my debts …. while others continue to irresponsibily procreate without regard to their fellow man and making any effort to leave behind a better world for our children.

And in return for doing the right thing and subsidizng other people (through MY taxes), what do I get? Oh, that’s right .. I am called a “racist” and am hated for the color of MY skin, which is a beautiful shade of white, which, by the way, I’m proud of, thank you very much!!

And to the black brethren, here is a huge news flash for ya’ll — The ancestors of the vast majority of whites in this country were NOT living in this country in the 1700’s and 1800’s, and therefore, were never slave owners … so PLEASE do not do what you accuse the white folk of doing …. uniformily hating ALL whites just cuz they’re white!! YES, YES you do that!!!

As for “racism”, as a “white chickie”, I too have been subjected to racism. When I was young and in school, I had my hair touched/pulled and been called many racial slurs (particularly by black girls — don’t know why?). I guess because I’m white, however, that doesn’t count as racism, right??????? LOL

Oprah set Gabby up on this one. Gabby should have been more responsible and not taken the bait. Gabby brought up one incident (giving her the benefit of the doubt that the statement even occurred) from long ago, and she admittedly had no idea whether the comment was related to race! She should never have said such a thing based on such frail evidence.

This is the problem with the liberal media today. They aren’t happy unless they contrive or exacerbate a racial event. Gabby would never have made it to square one without the support and training of many white persons along the way, and most of us know this fact. Many of us are just smiling about the agenda of the liberal media AGAIN.

It is easy to see black people looting, and I do not condone it on bit. However, that is just a symptom of a society where minorities are always suspects, always victims of police brutality, always victims of a manipulated education and political systems.

Idiots here want to say look what they are doing, but fail to see that whites less than fifty years ago had it so that blacks had to ride in the back of the bus and could not buy a sandwich at the front of the business. Fact is that kind of behavior is now moved into boardrooms and staff rooms. I don’t buy all that bull chips, because I am thinking for myself. Their property were taken over. Even the US Military were experimenting on them without knowledge. Blacks are still slaves in America. They just get to go home now.

Now we all expect them to be upright citizen Q. Get real…. It would be nice if whites would give minorities the start they need real equality. Like Bob Marley said. “Set your captive free….” Set your captive free….”

I was bullied in the 6th grade. I’m now 65, so I’m going back to the elementary school AND the system itself to sue for gross negligence. Since I’m 65, I DESERVE THIS. I’m entitlled to some compensation!!! We all grew up with factions, with other students who cared more about themselves than anyone else, and tried to utilize what vulnerability they could to enhance a certain power (if you will) over us. We dealt with it. Gabby is not the issue here; she’s intelligent and will get through this situation terrifically. What this society doesn’t need are its Oprah’s, Sharpton’s, and Wright’s.

This country is a melting pot for all sorts of races and ethnicities. I’m a white person of Irish decent but call myself a white American, not an Irish American. The born and bred “white people” of this country are what we refer to today as “rednecks”. The vast majority of them are probably racist. To my knowledge their were no plantations in Colorado but rather in the South. White people as a whole get tired of getting grouped together with a very small percentage of their race who seem to taint the perception of said race, just as black people do.

Not all blacks are thugs. This is true. Not all white people are racist. This is also true. That being said, my taxes are being raised because of the small percentage of the black community that can’t seem to act like responsible adults and conform to a societal norm. And why should they? What is the motivation to right the ship?

White people as a race are thought of negatively by blacks as a bunch of slave owning “crackers” who are just out to hold them back. Yet who is the first person they call when the need help? Whitey. Whose responsibility is it to help support the immature, irresponsible, inner city community? Whitey.
Whose responsibility is it to fill a quota of employees and students with blacks? Whitey.
Whose responsibility was it to help Katrina victims despite the looting, the shooting at rescuers, the irresponsible spending of the money given? Whitey.

Should I keep going?

If black America wants equality you have to let go of racism also. The most notorious 21st century racists are black; Spike Lee, Jesse, Al, and the likes. She wasn’t calling anyone racist directly, therefore she shouldnt have said it. If this actually happened she should stand tall and tell facts w/ time and names, otherwise its senseless and hurtful to black and white ralations. Just famous blacks dont seem to care about that.

It is they way white people have historically treated black people and other minorities in this country and around the world that makes black people feel this way. She has every right to wonder if she was called a slave because she is black. Slavery is the epitome of racism to a black person. Whatever you feel about Jackson and Sharpton has no bearing on the existence of racism in this country. “Stirring the pot” as some of you have put it does not mean there is nothing there to stir and it certanly doesn’t mean that letting the pot simmer is going to make your granddaddy like my granddadd any better.

Someone saying something racial is not racism. And therefore what is actual racism did not happen to this athlete. This athlete was given every opportunity and she did extremely well with those opportunities. Her success is why she was embraced.

This is why it is so very disappointing to again see someone conditioned and encouraged to wallow in the mud. Oprah Winfrey’s network is struggling and I have little doubt she encouraged this precisely to score a media impact — precisely to draw increased ratings to keep her network alive.

In other words, once again someone uses race to make money. When I think about all the people who sacrificed life and limb to put this nation on the path of human equality, it angers me deeply to see money merchants like Winfrey so callously exploit a situation and frame it in a manner it does not deserve.

It just causes anger, frustration, and hurt. And for what? For money! Anyone willing — indeed even desirous — to trade money for all these negative emotions in society is someone who should be shunned.

Why is it when a person speaks out about a racist act that has happen in their life others get their feeling hurt or defensive and attempt to attack an entire race of people. It reminds me of when a child has done something wrong and when its mentioned they get defensive. I think some of us habor guilty feeling for the wrong that was done in this country in the past by someone ancestors.Maybe if we put it in the history books like we put the wrong doing of other countries, then it wouldn’t be so hard to deal with. Many of us are in denial if they think it does not happen, or that everytime someone tells a truthful story about racism their playing the “race card”. (who invented that term probably someone who never experienced racism) The child was just telling the truth and that is something that some of us can’t handle in this great country that we share.
To “Just saying”: you might consider getting you hair pulled by a few black girls racism, but how about getting shot, or hung for looking at a white woman, getting told you can’t do something because of your color, being denied a job before the interview. I know some of that is in the past but I’m “just saying”

Why is it that the blacks are the ONLY minority group in this country who have NEVER elevated themselves? They get free college, free money, free jobs, etc., yet they still complain. How did the Vietnamese, Koreans, Chinese, Mexicans, etc. start buying property, house, opening businesses and black people just complain about something that happend 200 years ago???? The answer is WORK. Black people have been conditioned to sit on their butts, complain about racism, and then get another check from the gov. EBT is a prime example.

Mike

August 29th, 2012

Why are folks claiming Gabby played the race card? It’s my understanding that the phrase “play the race card” infers that race is used to gain an advantage. What advantage did this young lady gain by divulging this information? I saw another comment on this board where the person said that she did it to get attention. Really? Could she get any more attention than she was already getting due to her success at the Olympics?

Based on the history of this country, what Gabby is saying is altogether likely to be true. The reaction of the gym owner only makes it appear more true. Gymnastics is another one of those sports that Caucasians are not happy to see blacks take part in (BMX, NASCAR, etc. also fall in this category – though I don’t really consider them sports). Of course, they will cheer you when you have success, but they don’t really want you there. White folks need to stop pretending like racism doesn’t exist. There are many who have faced what Gabby faced and do not have the platform to bring it to light.

I kept it all inside. Just because you do not immediately tell others doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Did the principle know? Did the teachers? Maybe or maybe not. I never told them. Gabby’s reality is not some of your. Neither is mine. Her saying what happened to her does not make it a lie or anything else. Just because the coach wasn’t aware does not mean it didn’t happen. Matter of fact, he or she not know makes it all more real to me. I’m just talking from my own experience. America is a trip. Just because she won gold doesn’t make Gabby immune to racism. I cannot believe that because Gabby mentioned/claimed that a remark was made to her that it has triggered so many racist remarks and hatred to one another! The majority of the responses have gone way off the mark from what the article was actually about. I do believe the remark was made but as a 14-15 year old you don’t know what to think or take away from the remark unless you were raised/lived in that type of environment. I have a daughter and I can tell you by listening to her young ladies and/or women for that matter say and do mean things to each other for if no other reason just to prove a point to their friends. As a young child living in the South I experienced lots of racism which is what I now know it was but back then I thought it’s just the norm and how people treated me. I still encounter racism and racist ideology but I do not feed into it. I have better thing to do with my time. I will at times provide a CIVILIZED input and leave it at that. Racism will be around long after most of us are gone…it’s how we handle the racist situations that we are confronted with that will be a solution. In other words when you hear it leave! Don’t entice the situation because that is what many people want whether your white and black. This commentary is a good example…the comments drew you in and many forgot to comment on the article itself and started the racist comments on one another. Gabby will go on with her life as she should and everyone else in these postings will be pissed! Gabby will indeed learn from this interview on the do’s and don’ts of interview etiquette. She needs to be taught that interviewers will suck you in if you are not careful and fully understand the questions. To Gabby’s mom and manager’s please “do more for her than take her money..TEACH her!” OBTW people keep mentioning Jesse J., Al S., Rush L.etc…these individuals do not nor will ever speak on my behalf or reflect my beliefs!

This is a self defeating strategy, however, because how is the child going to respond to his first black employee or supervisor or teacher. There is just no way out for racists- black or white. The ignorance of it is unfortunately, whites dont understand racism cause they have never felt the sting of it, nor know the subtleness that it can be done in! it still exist today! And for those crying about the race card your the same individuals that do it and dont even realize what your doing! Im sure she has experienced it on some levels!!!

Everyone should read dmr’s post @ 10:25 a.m.

It indeed is another case of “The Little Boy that Cried Wolf”.

In the Africanized American community, race trumps everything. Race is a meal ticket with no credit limit and no expiration date–but the end of that is approaching rapidly.

“racism” is the go to card for every criticism or bad joke amongst many other inherent excuses it is used. Quit breeding the instant excuse of “racism”….it’s not 1860 and if you think you have a legal problem and are wronged (other than feeling offended by someones freedom of speech), take it to court.

I have never seen a group of people more offended by words and less offended by action in my life. We can have home invasions, murders, car-jackings. etc. but the minute someone is “offended”, it’s a lead news story.
