Mora’s comments ignite feud with Kiffin

L.A.’s a big town, but it might not be big enough for both Lane Kiffin and Jim Mora Jr.

Two large egos, two large mouths — it was only a matter of time before they butted heads.

USC coach Kiffin took exception to comments that Mora, his cross-town rival at UCLA, made on the radio Wednesday about the safety of the two schools’ campuses.

According to the L.A. Times, KLAA 830-AM host Roger Lodge asked Mora how he sells UCLA to recruits, and the former Falcons coach responded with a thinly veiled shot at USC.

“When you’re talking about UCLA, it’s one of the great schools in the world — not just America, but in the world. It’s a safe, beautiful campus in a great area of town. I mean, we don’t have murders one block off our campus.”

In April, two USC students from China were fatally shot in an apparent robbery attempt near campus.

Mora was defiant when asked about the comments.

“I just said our campus is safe,” Mora told The Times. “I didn’t say anything about anyone else’s campus. I just said it about our campus. I didn’t mention another campus. We don’t have anybody getting murdered a block off of our campus. If anybody, whether USC or Cal State San Bernardino, is offended by the statement, then that’s their insecurity, not mine.”

He later offered an apology after saying he didn’t even know about the April murders.

“After learning the details of the shootings downtown earlier this year, I can understand how my comments on the radio yesterday could be interpreted as insensitive to the victims and their families,” Mora said. “The interviewer and myself were talking about UCLA football and the tremendous attributes of the UCLA campus and I truly regret and I’m sorry if my words caused any pain. That was not my intention.”

Kiffin, however, wasn’t buying Mora’s explanation.

“I don’t really think that’s something to joke about,” he told the Times. “That’s all I got to say about that.”

However, that wasn’t all he had to say about that.

Kiffin told the Times that campus safety at USC only comes up with recruits “when opposing coaches bring it up.”

“And we have stats to show the facts, not opinions,” he said.

“I would like to say that our staff does not negative recruit. There’s so many good things to talk about here, as far as the school and the history of the program. It’s the greatest place in the world, so there’s no need to talk about other places.”

But in the end, Mora said he won’t worry too much about the controversy.

“I don’t spend the day thinking about what USC thinks. Just like they don’t spend the day thinking about what we think.”

These recruits need to come to the other USC. We have underage drinking! We also do a neat job with suspensions, in that the stature of limitations generally expires before game time.

As a Vol fan and a Falcon fan, I can’t express how much I hate these 2. It’s inevitable that they’re gonna end up in a slap fight before it’s all said and done. I wonder which one will be the 1st to say “my dad can beat up your dad”?

What a couple of douches!! USC and UCLA are both great schools but I just can’t understand how either of them picked these coaches. Mora is a joke of a coach and an even worse human being. Kiffin is a good coach but and even bigger idiot than Mora. “Thanks for giving us a career Dads”!! I just keep wondering what Petrino’s father did for a living?!?! He obviously didn’t teach Bobby how to be remorseful(or how to ride a motorcycle)!!! How about Petrino goes to Stanford and then that entire tarded

I can’t stop laughing. Kiffin said “I would like to say that our staff does not negative recruit”
Dude you had one of the most corrupt recruiting in history while at Tenn. Constantly dogging other schools. Having kids that were committed to other schools even up to signing day, have them silently switch their signing/committment at the last minute w/o even giving the courtesy to the other school so they could use that scholly for someone else. Additionally, on his staff he has one of the biggest if not the biggest bagmen in college football w/ Bay Bay Orgeron.

However i will say this, USC would roll through your best and all I can say is if usc is so weak, why do sec teams run from them, never wanting to schedule. Dont give me the we play tough games every week bull..

Mora and UCLA have a long way to go to get very competitive, but you guys that think USC is still down need to start paying attention! Like him or not, Kiffin is reeling in some recruits out there and building a pretty good team. All this “secret probation” stuff…maybe, but they’ll still have the crystal, just like Auburn, Alabama, LSU and everyone else that’s always “going to have the ax fall!”

Being a UGA fan I seldom feel sorry for UT but Kiffin had to be the worst head coach hire in the SEC since Mike Smith at Alabama. He is a crooked, slimy, back stabbing jerk with an incredible ability to make almost everyone dislike him and he runs his mouth more than “Tide Roll” on this blog. He would probably be an assistant high school coach if he and his father weren’t a package deal. Mora has a lot of negatives but in this situation, I would say that Kiffin is the leader in the clubhouse.

The Bruins, on the other hand, remain irrelevant.
