Auburn’s oaks cleared for toilet paper rolls

Auburn Trees Poisoned

(AP / The Ledger-Enquirer)

Their leaves are mottled and brown, and their canopies are smaller but the poisoned live oaks at Auburn University’s Toomer’s Corner are strong enough to withstand being rolled with toilet paper this fall during football victory celebrations, school officials say.

The 131-year-old trees’ future, however, remains uncertain, as is the fate of a University of Alabama fan who has been charged with attacking them with a powerful herbicide after the Tigers beat the Crimson Tide in 2010. The poisoning was not discovered until early 2011.

The Associated Press reports that the oak trees were trimmed this summer for the start of fall classes and football season.

The Tigers face LSU in their first SEC home opener at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Sept. 22. Auburn faces Alabama Nov. 24 – in Tuscaloosa. (Auburn faces the Georgia Bulldogs in Auburn on Nov. 10).

“While long-term decisions about the trees have not been made, fans are still welcome to gather at the corner this fall and continue the tradition of rolling the trees with toilet paper,” Auburn said in a statement obtained by the AP.

Harvey Updyke faces an Oct. 1 trial. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect on charges of criminal mischief and desecrating a venerable object. His attorneys want the trial moved from Auburn because of extensive pretrial coverage.

The trees still won’t see much toilet paper this season. Auburn is terrible

Auburn will be lucky to break even at 6-6 this year.

Can’t wait to watch their fans empty their stadium in the 3rd quarter after the Dawgs trounce them again.

Not to be picky but La-Monroe is their home opener followed by their first SEC home game vs. LSU.

Can you believe part of a fan base is that “sick” to do something like this (poison the trees). Really sad. “Pinheads” doesn’t come close for the right word. I hope Updike spends more than a few years in jail with 6′ 7″ Sissy Boy with lipstick.

Harvey Updyke is a darn fine American and I support his actions. He the epitome of the University of Alabama fan base. Harvey represents our university with class and dignity. I am to announce that I’m in the process of lobbying our administration to award him an honorary degree. ROLL TAHD!

Hope they all rot down

What kind of rednecks deface their own property as a celebration of gameday? I’m not talking incidental garbage and things, but to go out of your way to TP your own place. What morons.

Heading west from Atlanta on I-20 or south-west on I-85, the average IQ of the local populace drops about one point for every five miles driven, and after you cross the “hootch at the state line, something else besides just run of the mill ignorance and stupidity kicks in…not sure what it is, but it makes dumb hick worship lowlifes like Nick Saban and Cam Newton and put up statues of them. Saban and Newton are just Bobby Petrino and Maurice Clarett in different uniforms, just with more success and having not been caught red-handed (yet).

Granted I’m not an Auburn fan, but I grew up near there and I’ve always found it kind of pitiful that they celebrate victories by rolling their own trees. Isn’t that like giving yourself a victory wedgie?

With their QB situation, they wont have too many chances outside of the sisters of the poor to roll many trees. Certainly not on Nov 10 when we roll into town undefeated. And as always, what time is it in Auburn? Yep, about 45-7.

These comments are to be expected of fans of a UGA team that has failed on numerous occasions to live up to expectations. Every year is supposed to be the year but it never happens. If it doesn’t happen this year with the light schedule, it will never happen for UGA. Maybe Jesus will love Mark Richt this year and let him win it all.

MT, those dates precede (look it up if you can read) me. Let’s talk about “modern” history. How does it make you feel that UGA has had the teams to win big and just hasn’t had the heart or luck? I bet it is a really horrible feeling to have seen Florida, LSU, Auburn and Alabama players hold up that crystal football. South Carolina will probably join that club before UGA does. It’s OK, though. It’s just a game, right?

Why do people celebrate the ruining of something that means a lot to people ( regardless of what it means to you personally). I would hate if one of the traditions of my school was ruined for no good reason. I realize you want a team to lose, but there is no reason to hate any university. I hope the trees find a way to improve.

HOnestly people. Everytime there is something negative going on with AUbarn, hence the newest recruiting scandal regarding Javon Robinson out of Memphis(check any football message board for the latest) Aubarn comes out with something new about the trees to deflect. Yes, I am a BAMA Fan.
I and most BAMA fans I know feel that Updike deserves to be punished severely for what he did. We honestly are ashamed of his actions. But do not judge a whole fan base for ONe fanatic fans actions.
As for the trees, ask Aubarn how they get the toilet paper out of the trees. In case you dont know, they pressure wash it out. They have been doing this for years and years. They have been warned that this is not good for the trees at all. But yet they keep doing it.
These trees have been poisoned and are in distress. If you really cared about the trees would you take the slightest chance on harming them further by rolling them and then pressure washing the paper out and risking further damage? I know what I would do. But then again, this is another PR movement by Aubarn to deflect another negativite on them. Pathetic.

Do yourselves a favor. Pretend you’re an 18-year old kid looking at schools. You decide to read the posts on this board as a glimpse at your fan base. You’re particularly looking at Alabama, Georgia and Auburn. Ok, so go ahead back to the top of the comments and start reading. Which group of fans do you think are best represented based on the comments above? I’ll wager that it is NOT Alabama or Georgia.

It’s a story about TREES and people have to 1) belittle the IQ of everyone who has a degree from Auburn, 2) discredit the recent accomplishments of the AU football team based on incorrect suppositions of guilt (FBI, NCAA, SEC and every sane person in the western hemisphere see that nothing untoward happened between Auburn and Cam), 3) make bold and well-thought out statements like ‘Auburn Sux’, 4) discredit the quality of the coaching abilities of the man who won virtually every coach of the year award just 2 seasons ago, 5) LAUD the criminal responsible for desecrating the trees, and 6) making fun of a sacred university tradition. Be proud of yourselves.

Or, ask yourselves this, what would you think if a Tech fan crawled into Athens and stole your bell, melted it and turned it into “45-42″ Christmas ornaments? Or how about if some Tennessee fan dug up the Bear’s gravesite and propped him up with a sign that said, “I’ve never met a bottle I wouldn’t finish or a rule I wouldn’t break.” Yes, you’d probably be a little upset about it. Understandably.
