West Georgia to explore Division I status

West Georgia has commissioned a study to explore the possibility of playing football on the Division I level.

The Wolves are currently Division II and play in the Gulf South Conference, but have asked Collegiate Consulting to analyze playing on the FCS level. Moving football would require moving all sports to Division I.

The Wolves have 12 sports, seven for men and five for women. West Georgia is located in Carrollton.

The study will include financial analysis and a facilities study, among other comparative analyses.

A call to athletic director Daryl Dickey hasn’t been returned.

As an alum, I’d prefer they play better for a few years before subjecting the programs to a higher level of competition. And it should have been RED HAWKS.

As a West Georgia BRAVE, I think they need a few more years to develop their programs. The facilities are definately improved from years ago, the talent is lacking, but it has gotten significantly better over the past few years. Right now all we care about is the Homecoming game against Valdosta. GO BRAVES err WOLVES!

More competition for the Iggles in Statesboro. There is ZERO difference for a HS recruit between playing in Statesboro and Carrolton.

They better get their check books out because the window on their relevance (what little they had) is closing.

They haven’t been able to compete at the DII level, why go to DIA & get kicked around even more?

I have to agree with Dr Fever. They needs to play better and make some improvements before they make that jump. I think the biggest steps need to be taken in football and baseball. While they had a winning season last year, 2005 was the only other +.500 team (let alone anywhere close to .500) football has had in a decade and their baseball team has been flat out terrible the last few years and hasn’t had a winning team in recent memory.

If you’re a recruit would you rather be in Carollton or remote Statesboro. If you think that West Georgia in FCS and Mercer in FCS down the road in Macon will not affect recruiting well you’re not thinking straight

As a college recruit…would you rather be in a dry county or not? That’s all it comes down to when comparing statesboro and carrollton

Wouldn’t be a big surprise if they moved up. West Georgia is already better than Savannah State and Georgia State, both of whom are in Division I.

I would rather be in Carollton or Statesboro rather than that massive 47 acre campus in downtown Atl that Ga State calls home.

Panama, with that logic, why do guys go to school in Tuscaloosa or Auburn? These guys could care less about the scenery!! They want exposure, so don’t even whisper to compare Carollton and the ‘boro! The Eagles just went to the play-offs last year, and have done so several times at D1-AA. West Georgia???..didn’t even know they fielded a team!!

Braves- no problem. When I went there, it was dry. If you wanted hard liquor, you had to go to the County Line Liquor Store(Metter), straight-up the dirt road! LOL

Panama, players do not even consider that at all. They play for a quality coach and program, and both Ga State does not have. Curry is not even above .500.

Let. It. Go.

DawgHunt, you have to forgive Panama and Ben. They are blinded by their huge Student Athletic Budget and love to put down Southern for our financial shortcomings (which by the way is not nearly as funded by student fees as theirs) and our location in a rural area. They also feel that every recruit in the nation is just dying to live in Atl and play in the Dome.

Are you serious? The Dome is empty on game day. Besides… when Blank gets his new stadium built with grass, do they really think Blank would allow a lower FBS school to mess up his grass the day before his Falcons play?

I think not.

Enjoy the Dome while it lasts, before you have to play way outside the city.

Braves, Carroll County is no longer a dry county. I think recruits would pick UWG over GSU, once UWG gets competitive in sports. Statesboro is in the middle of nowhere

UWGAlum, nothing against West Georgia as I have not spent much time there. But I don’t think a recruit cares necessarily where the schools is located(unless proximity to home is important). Most likely they will go where they can win and play as soon as possible.

Georgia Southern is the closest to being Division 1 ready and they are currently choosing not to move up. West Georgia would be wise to move up to Georgia southern’s division instead of making the big leap. I believe Georgia State should have done the same thing! We shall see!

If anyone moves up, it should be GSU. They actually compete on a regular basis. West Georgia probably hasn’t won their conference in 10 years and are lucky to field a .500 team.

GState Ben and Panama…professional Georgia State trolls. Do you guys have anything better to do? Nobody cares about Georgia State football. UGA is top dog, GTech is a distant 2nd, and Georgia Southern finishes third. At least Southern is ACTUALLY GOOD.

These LITTLE JOKE SCHOOLS like West Ga and GaState looking at D-1 are fools. All it will do is cause the Real Powers of D-1 to create their own league and leave you behind again.

Anyone want to bet me that these dweebs Ben and panama live in their respective mother’s basements?
No worries, my friends. Football season starts in a few weeks, and that is the exact moment in time when these loud mouthed Ga state goobs will become instantly mute. Gonna be hard for gentle Ben and company to talk smack to anybody above the division 2 level, because Ga state is essentially division 1 in name only. My sage advice to any team that gets beat by Lambuth on the regular, is to STFU.
Anybody in atlannta who wants to cheer for a real team, the Ga Southern Eagles will welcome you

UWG has had terrible leadership over the past 10 years. UWG has recently been forced to hire a new VP over athletics that has knowledge, experience, and vision. I would agree there is no way UWG can consider moving up until some changes in staff are made by the new VP. This may mean a new AD or Football coach. The current FB head coach is under a lot of pressure to produce results. This news doesn’t help relieve any of that pressure.

WRONG
D-1 is Big Time Football BSC or FBS
calling GaState D-1 is a joke. Get in the Sunbelt them call yourself that. Actually have a winning season them call yourself D-1.
D-1 AA is not D-1 football.

Kreedham, gotta correct ya there, Georgia Southern…the REAL GSU, has interest from C-USA (with powerhouses like UTEP, Toledo, E. Carolina, and Marshall). This time, they might actually make the jump!
