Spurrier lifts QB’s suspension after a few days

Tanner McEvoy is back at practice after a zero-game suspension.

Tanner McEvoy is back at practice after a zero-game suspension.

Now we know why Steve Spurrier never seems to have any players suspended early in the season.

The South Carolina coach has lifted the suspension of backup quarterback Tanner McEvoy after less than a week, saying the incident for which he was locked up was no big deal.

Spurrier told the Post and Courier of Charleston:

“Tanner’s back. He’s been approved to come back to the team. Do you know what he got arrested for? He told me … I think South Carolina doesn’t have that law. North Carolina has that law (about underage people not being allowed to drink any alcohol at all before driving). He got arrested for it, and he’ll pay his fine. You want him suspended for having a beer and he’s underage? How many football players would be playing if they had a beer and they were underage? But anyway, go talk to coach Tanner (athletic director Ray Tanner) about that, if we’re going to suspend him, OK? I’m not going to suspend him for that, all right? But I don’t know if he’s going to play anyway.”

McEvoy was arrested July 29 in North Carolina for speeding and driving after consuming alcohol while under 21.

Spurrier could be right about the law. In many states it isn’t illegal for an underage person to drink at home with his parents’ consent. So it’s possible it wouldn’t be illegal for him to drive after drinking a beer or two.

In any case, other SEC coaches may want to take note of Spurrier’s statement. It indicates he relied on McEvoy himself for an interpretation of South Carolina law, a practice that could drastically reduce player violations.

McEvoy is competing with two other QBs to back up starter Connor Shaw.

Yep! All the haters need to get off of UGA’s back.
This is a joke! If this happened to a UGA player he would have been arrested, 50 articles would have been written about how Richt has lost control of the team and then, the player would have been suspended for at least 2 games.
Last time I checked……drinking alcohol underage is a crime in ANY state.

It didn’t take long for the Mutt fans to scream about not being fair. It’s not like UGA couldn’t change their own rules if they wanted. It’s not the other schools fault for UGA trying to hold their student athletes to higher standards than the rest of the SEC.

Admittedly, this particular incident may be pretty minor but this is typical of how Spurrier handles legal problems with his players (”Mr. Garcia, this is your 7th offense. One more and I’m suspending you a game.. I mean it this time!!”). Give UGA and even a school like Clemson some credit – they are consistent in administering discipline for their players.

Was this really worth reporting…really? So what, he drank a beer and was stopped for speeding.
How many of you college people out there have ever drank a beer? This is such a terrible thing…..a fourth string QB should never do anything like that. Maybe we should give him four lashes and suspend him from college.

Coach Spurrier has more ethics and goodness in his little finger than Mark Richt will ever have in his entire body. And Spurrier is a superior coach by several orders of magnitude.

Americans from all walks of life in every part of the country admire and respect Steve Spurrier. Most of them have never heard of Mark Richt, and if they have, they feel only revulsion for him.

I think I read somewhere that Spurrier told McAvoy that he was on double secret probation. What a joke Spurrier is. He was the same way at UF. He’s all for discipline unless a player’s suspension is going to get in the way of a win. So tell me Stevie, if he has a few beers gets in a car and hits someone, is that O.K.? Also, the last time I checked the legal drinking age was 21 so if this kid is under 21 did he not break the law?

If you have a beer in your parents home under their supervision, there may be something to that. But when you are underage, you drink a beer or two, then get behind the wheel of a car and speed, then you have committed a criminal act.

I don’t want to hear about Georgia players being in trouble, because again we are finding out that Mark Richt puts a higher price on being and acting like a responsible member of society than winning. Not everybody likes that, but it certainly let’s you know he is running a clean program.

I think what folks are misinterpreting in Spurrier’s jab “play them early, they have suspension” is that he was not making a judgement call on the behavior of either program’s players. Obviosuly he has been around a long time and doesn’t believe that. (see his quote on how many players would there beleft playing in college if..if…..)

He was not being hypocritical at all and made a valid point. He was stating a fact and making fun of UGA’s POLICIES. He meant it as a insult, just not in the way that some folks are saying.

Tanner McEvoy was ticketed for speeding. Oh, the humanity. In North Carolina, it is an additional penalty if you consumed ANY alcohol under the age of 21 when ticketed for another offense.

In conclusion, McEvoy was charged with speeding NOT DUI like Chase Vasser. The only real story here is why did it take AJC 2 months to report Vasser was arrested BUT they are all over South Carolina’s 4th-string QB arrest for speeding and consumption of alcohol.

ok, WE didn’t suspend your back up Qb. YOU did. Go preach to your own school who obviously thought it was appropriate. Nobody here said he should be suspended for a speeding ticket. Nice try to invent something on our part.

My question is : is it illegal in North Carolina, where he was at the time, or not. I’d say if they literally arrested him, they much have thought so. What does it matter what SC law is?

Reinard Wilson & Peter Boulware destroyed Danny Awful in the Regular Season!!!
That Fla – FSU game wasn’t really close(regular season) — unlike the Bama-LSU game in November.
Spurrier has the superior Team & it showed in the Sugar Bowl.

The only difference in saban and the other football coaches is he covers up what happens in the state of alabama. He has to be paying the officers. He does not let them surface. He came in to our high school last year and thought he was the man,but left without signing our highly rated QB last year. Serves him right,he is not the man in our state.

Meat — We’ll be there. We’ll show up. I have all the respect for LSU. Great Program, Great Players, Great facilities, good Coaching.
Saban does very well in the state of Louisiana. Actually, We get contributors to our Program from LA — much more than from Ga, including the top ranked Player from the state of Louisiana last year. Not to mention, our top returning RB & WR are both from LA.
As for the badger — the ONLY play He made in either game last year that worked in your favor was a cheap-shot on Dre Kirkpatrick on Special Teams. The only cheap shot in either game! Go figure. #83, Kevin Norwood is still catching passes on #7.
We’ll show up.

So Branden Smith is smart enough to know how to pass a drug test? Newsflash…anyone that smokes weed can pass a test with 24 hours notice. I’m not at all saying it makes him a bad kid, as I would say the majority of college kids do smoke weed while in college. Just pointing out that Richt and Spurrier did the same thing. They lifted the suspensions of players that were arrested because in THEIR OPINIONS, they did not warrant suspensions.

I am thinking Tanner McEvoy’s punishment should include watching a public service announcement on drinking and driving from the former UGA AD (maybe his QB coach should watch it too). UGA fans that want to cry foul at this kid essentially getting arrested for speeding and drinking underage should remember the UGA players that are punching women in the face, smoking pot and carrying unregistered guns on school grounds. I am not condoning underage drinking or operating a vehicle after drinking, but maybe those who live in glass doghouses should not cast the 1st stone.
(how much of a suspension did coach Richt warrant when the drunken photos underage Stafford and later on Murray hit the internet?).
We all know how many chances Coach Spurrier gave Stephen Garcia, the kid had maturity issues and a drinking problem and it is a shame he never realized his potential due to his own stupidity. How many chances did Coach Richt give Odell Thurman before that criminal took his act to the NFL?

I’m so tired of UGA FANS/GROUPIES getting on each and every blog stating their case. A few years ago you were ranked the #1 Team in all the land and you were ousted before you lost your first game (it’s true). You haven’t won a damn thing since the days of THE GREAT HERCHEL WALKER was there (it’s true) and now your currently sitting at #6 (it’s true). That means people think you have a shot (it’s true). The defense will be a monster (it’s true) but Aron Murry, Bobo and Richt will struggle as usual on the offensive side of the football (it’s true). But until the football is kicked off no one knows for sure (Umm???). But if we were to go on UGA Football history it’s always what if game with yall (it’s true). What if we still had Crowell, what if Rambo had played, what if Murry didn’t get sacked or Terrence Edwards makes that catch, what if Garrison and Andre stayed, blah blah blah and blah!! You guys will be watching LSU or BAMA play for the BCS and screaming SEC SEC, who in the hell does that? Michigan would never cheer Ohio State to victory. Geeish… LOL!!!

It was illegal where he got stopped. Driving over the speed limit is illegal in every state. Driving under the influence is illegal in every state. Drinking under age is ILLEGAL in every state. Spurrier is a hypocrite for calling out Mark Richt when he can’t even give proper discipline to his own players. Garcia is a prime example. When it comes to discipline and suspensions Spurrier needs to shut up!

We actually do have that law in South Carolina. Any trace of alcohol in the blood is not Only considered possession of alcohol in this state but makes any driving for minors driving under the influence. Coach spurrier clearly keeps up with these things even when they immediately affect him.

And as far as the underage drinking thing, ted, college kids almost universally drink underage. Hell, I was cited three times for it. But each and every time I had to face the music from the law, the school, and my parents. It’s called being accountable for your actions. How many SC fans currently defending Spurriers decision were sharpening their axes for Clemson’s Sammy Watkins when he was arrested for possession (this state’s collegiate rivalry has a way of making people holier-than-thou with a side of irrational). The fact is, college kids, athletes and nonathletes alike are going to drink and smoke pot, and frankly the fact that they do isn’t necessarily wrong. But when this becomes a legal matter people need to be held accountable for their actions regardless of their position, socially, economically, politically or athletically.
