It’s ‘quiet time’ for the Gators

Will Muschamp isn’t know as “Coach Boom” because he’s shy and demure.

But the volatile Florida coach and his players are taking a different tack this year after his initial campaign of 7-6 last year, the Gators’ worst season since the Ron Zook years.

“We need to stop talking and start playing,” Muschamp told his team Thursday, according to Florida Today.

“It’s really about doing your talking on the field,” said senior offensive lineman Xavier Nixon. “We’re just not going to talk that much this season.”

Players said last year’s team engaged in too much smack talk.

“We kind of saw it as a little bit of a problem,” center Jonottan Harrison said. “Everbody has kind of talked about just concentrating on football and if somebody (talks smack) we’ll pull them aside and tell them to stop it.”

After years of the wisecracking Steve Spurrier, on-field Gator chomps and Tim Tebow’s fist-pumping and cheerleading, the thought of a quiet Florida team just doesn’t seem plausible.

The Gators start the season with four games they should win: Bowling Green, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Kentucky. Then comes LSU, the preseason No. 1. Win that one and we’ll see how quiet they are.

UF is going to be really good this season. They’re as far under the radar as is possible for a program of that stature, but have a loaded defense, a lot of experience returning on the offensive line, two fantastic quarterback prospects and a lot of speed.

They’re being overlooked, and that’s probably not a good thing for the rest of the East.

I like the Gators quiet and under the radar. They need to prove themselves once again, and I believe it will happen soon. Personally, I do not like show boating by anyone.
Good luck to all.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Gators started a trend that all college and pro athletes followed! I am sick and tired of the trash talking and show boating that goes on in most college and pro football games.

I rarely agree with the Gators but I like this move and hope every SEC team does it. If they get used to it, it may translate to the NFL as well since the SEC sends so many players to the next level.

Gators are my pick to win the SEC East I’m afraid. UGA will be third I think. I hate saying this but usually when a team has so much off the field term-oil it usually doesn’t bode well for the season. Plus the fact that walk-ons will be playing special teams with two true freshman at PC at punter is not good. I think our low numbers of scholarship players hurt us and we lose 3 games to special teams this year. Last year we lost 2 but CMR won’t do anything about it. UGA will finish 8-5.

Gators are under the radar…2nd season will be an improvement. Cant rush off a head coach after just two years in development. But i do like his tact with smack talking. Prove your game on the field…not with the words. AnM will be a tough game for Gators just as much and UGA Mizzou matchup.
We’ll see a ton of freshman this year, and putting too much emphasis on a true freshman LT. High School ball one year, SEC the next? Big transition. JHC at safety is a good choice, athletic, ball hawk, physical…just concerned on blown coverage mistakes as a true fresh…and M. Mitchell might be exactly what we need on Defense. First round material at that position for him!! Marshal and Gurley could be the next T. Brown and D. Ware. They came in as true freshmen and had great seasons. Oline doesnt bode well in my mind though. Very sketchy all the way across. Throw ST as a concern as well.

I see the Gaytors at 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the SEC. They aren’t experiencd enough to win the big game againts team like LSU that got more talents. Plus they plays LSU early in season before time developing against better teams. And they got to learn new offense. Even if Judas Muschump learns to call game better they still can’t beat a good team without more experience. They open with such an easy schedule for first month that they then got all the tough teams with no rest in back part of schedule. Likely to be dinged up with mounting injuries in back loaded schedule with not enough dept h to survive. That puts Dawgs winning in Jax on way to back to back East champs.

Hairy Dawg……

1. Much improved sentence structure. Congrats.
2. Florida was not experienced last year when the starters were mostly jrs. sophs, fr. They will be Srs., Jrs, and sophs this year. They ARE experienced this year.
3. LSU is #1 in the country right now…..and that projects them as having more “talent” that everyone in the country right now.
4. But Florida does play LSU in the fifth game of the year after a tough road games vs. A&M and the Vols….and a game vs. Kentucky at home….and the Bowling Green game at home. So the Gators will be well prepared to play the Tigers in THE SWAMP.
5. Muschamp does not call the game. He neither calls the offense nor the defense. That would be coach Pease and coach Quinn calling the game. Muschamp is the head coach and delagates the calling of the game. Most of his work…as head coach….comes in preparing for the game with those coaches and all the players.
6. As I said….Muschamp will let Pease and Quinn call the games using a bunch of experienced Srs., jrs, and sophs.
7. Playing A&M out there with the 6th man….and playing the Vols up there….in the first three games….is an easy schedule at the beinning of the season….??? How do you figure that one???
8. Florida does play SC before Georgia this year….with no week off. I will give you that one.
9. Unlike last year, Hairy, Florida has a lot of depth this year……it is Georgia that does not have a lot of depth this year. Sorry…..Hairy.
10. The back to back thing in the East……well……I think SC, Vandy, and Florida will have their input on that theory. We will see…..but I have picked the Dawgs this year….but depth and injuries could be a huge issue for them….expecially on the offensive line…not a lot of experience there….and no depth at all. Therefore, my pick of the Dawgs may have flaws.

We were heading to Savannah Friday afternoon and driving through Jacksonville listening to a sports radio show. This station is the Flagship for the Jax Jags NFL team. A question was tossed up for discussion among the 3 folks doing the broadcast. The question: if you had 10,000 to bet on which team would secure the most wins this season between the Jags, Gators and the ‘Canes what team would you pick? The consensus was the Gators would win 6 games ( they picked The Jags to win 7). Hey all gave very solid analysis of each game on the schedule – picking UGA over UF. Main issue was QB play in the SEC. One injury here and they have issues big time. But the defense is loaded and will be formidable.
Immediately when the question was poised, we chose UF ( I travelled on the Tamba Bay Bucs Charter flight to Jacksonville last year and even though the Jags won, they are awful) … I said the Gators would win 8 games and then perhaps a bowl game. I do agree with those that feel Florida is under the radar right now…they will not be that way when the Dawgs play them…one way or another. I am Dawg through and through, but I feel UF will be a good team when it’s all said and done.

A far as “Dawg” or “Nole,” there is no schizophrenia here. There is no one or the other. It’s ALWAYS both–EVERY day. I rejoice on a day when both teams win, despair when both lose, and do a little of both when one wins and the other loses. And I am thankful they seldom play each other in the men’s big 3 sports.

I also grudgingly, painstakingly, and unenthusiastically pull for the football gators (forgive me, Lord) in all but two games a year–only because it helps our strength of schedule if they win.

Agreed. I see similarities in this one and UGA-Mizzou.

The SEC teams (UGA and fla) likely will be favored, but they’re both road games against opponents who feel they have a lot to prove during their inaugural games as members of the SEC.

Don’t hold your breath expecting ol’ Tampa gator to write objectively about–or acknowledge any serious weakness in–his beloved reptiles. He’s truly a blind loyalist. I do acknowledge that my opinion of him is decidedly UNobjective.

AM been getting beat by Mizzou pretty often in last 5 years cause Mizzou better.  Dawgs got the harder road game than Gaytors.

Even so this is SEC vs Big 12 were talking about.  Dawgs goning to beat Mizzou in teaching lesson that they not up to SEC level yet.  Plus we got to put them in place so they knows they will be at bottom of SEC picking order like Vandy.

And anyway there is to many Tigers in West now with Bungle Tigers, Tigers-Eagles and now Mizzou.  They need to change mascots to something different like Ole Miss did to Col Reb.

So Gaytors got more easy road game against Big 12 but Dawgs will be smashing Mizzou like Vandy.  Gaytors could choke to AM but I think they should win being from SEC vs Big 12.

Tampa Gator is a good guy. He DOES have a much rosier view than most of my Gator brothren. That said, I have no problem with a FAN being overly optimistic. That’s kinda what the word means. Me? I’ll remain cautiously optimistic. As I’ve grown older, I have come to believe that it’s better to under promise and over deliver than the other way around. I truly believe this team will be MUCH better than last year…especially on offense. Even with a big improvement, it may not translate into a big increase in wins. That is why I predict an 8-4 result. Hill….and several former Miami coaches….I believe…..are going to be names mentioned a lot in the media concerning the recruiting stories at Miami. I think some things must be ready to come out that would involve Hill…and therefore become a distraction to Florida upcoming season. I just think the Florida administration….including Muschamp and Foley…..just didn’t want anything to do with it (Debose and another player had to be evaluated because of their recruitment by Miami….and were cleared of any wrongdoing). Hill should have never associated himself with Miami in the first place….as a former Gator. He is a good coach…and it is unfortunate. But Pease was heavily involved in coaching the Boise wide receivers….and they were really good…..and the transition to him doing it full time will be seamless….and might produce better results.

I don’t think Pease will have any trouble with the added duties. My biggest concern is we now have several WR’s waffling on their commitments. Hopefully, Pease and Muschamp can ease their concerns and we don’t lose anyone because of it. All the other commits seem to be solid.

You need to become more “Muschamp like” in that he clearly believes anything less than Atlanta is failure for Florida. We will never project or accept 8-4 or less seasons….not at Florida….and 8-4 does not get you to Atlanta. After all….it is Florida. We will leave the building a team……playing and losing in minor bowls…… to others in the SEC. For Gators…winning titles is always the objective and the projection. Florida’s defense is going to be….from what I hear……one of the top defensive teams in the country. And the OL is much bigger and stronger…and more experienced….DID YOU SEE THAT PHOTO OF MATT PATCHAN YESTERDAY….he is huge compared to last year…and healthy for the first time (hopefully will not play with a cast on his arm for most of this year). And Brissett and Driskel are very talented……and if one or both play well….Florida is more than capable to winning the SEC East this year….and give LSU all they want in Atlanta…..I guarantee you….if the Gators get to Atlanta…..they will not get blown out by LSU…..or lose to a Big Ten team later on if they lose. Sorry…Dawg fans.

The only receiver of concern is Rodney Adams from Tampa. In fact, he has already decommitted. But I think that might have more to do with the Gators going after some other top WR recruits than Hill leaving. All the other WR commits….Fulwood, Hawkins, Thompson…..are very solid to Florida….and Hill was not heavily involved at all in their recruitment. I think Adams will come back to the Gators if Muschamp does not land a couple other highly rated receiver recruits. I have watched Adams play….and frankly…..I was not overly impressed with him. Not very strong. All speed. Good hands. I prefer recruits like Fulwood and Hawkins….big and strong….not easy to knock off routes like Adams.

DawgNole

I tend to follow Beast’s “cautiously optimistic” route–rather than Tg’s “rosier” outlook.

Unlike Tg, I almost invariably pull for the opponents of my favorite teams because in the big picture it HELPS my favorite teams. Plus, I’d much rather beat a gator team–or a G Tech team–at the end of the year that’s actually worth a damn (big game, nation’s eyes on it, huge stakes, etc.) than one that’s struggling. Means a whole lot more to my team(s)–and stings a whole lot more to yours.

Dawgs have taken a lot of heat for their soft schedule this season, but I see trouble with road games at Mizzou, SC, fla, and Auburn. Won’t know much til after Mizzou. Depth, largely due to the well-documented disciplinary issues–is a major concern. Won’t feel confident about beating fla until/unless we can re-establish mental superiority. Been a long time (22 years) since we had that.

FSU’s schedule is even weaker–especially that last game of the year in Tallahassee (just servin’ y’all up a little free grief). Hell, I’m just glad it’s in Tallahassee this year. As far as the sked, it really chafed my azz when WVA dropped us and we had to plug in Savannah St. I have a huge problem with marshmallow OOC schedules.

Could go either way: Tennessee, Vandy, Missouri (may lose on here)

Results: 7-5 would be successful. Who knows what bowl…but they will probably win. No proven QB, RB, WR or OL in 2013. Because of recruiting and depth, they will be much improved for Fall 2013. How good was Urban Meyer? Without Tebow he lost 9 games in his 2 years at UF. Tebow goes to ‘Bama, and UF would have one no SECs and no NCs under Meyer. UF will compete in 2014 for an SEC East title because they are recruiting lights out. But there is no Tebow amongst those recruits..
