Want more sports talk in Atlanta?

Another sports talk radio station is headed to the Atlanta market – and will arrive when football is in full swing and baseball prepares for the playoffs.

The AJC’s Rodney Ho reports that local rock station 92.9/Dave FM plans to become an FM sports talk station in late September or early October. Dave FM’s change could create a major battle in Atlanta, which already has two well-established sports talk stations: 680/The Fan (simulcast on 93.7) and 790/The Zone.

Are you more inclined to give the new station a try, or stick with one of the two established stations? Let us know what you think.

Unless they hire Mike Bell away from 790 and find a way to have a better morning traffic show than 680. I will stick with 790 all day (with a little 680 in the morning)

They are one of the few listenable local stations, I really hope they don’t do this.

There is a need for a quality sports talk station in the ATL. The mornings are terrible on 790 and their new lunch time format stinks. 680 simply doesn’t have the personalities. Morning show consists of a former rock jock, a former USC tennis player who thinks he’s the smartest person in the room, a former pitching coach from the Bobby Cox tree, and some girl power that seems out of place. Their mid day sucks as well.

790 if only they would get rid of 2 live stews. Biggest idiots on the station.

Dave FM needs to have some credible hosts and some Homers. I’m tired of people from Philly or other cities coming here and thinking they know anything about ATLANTA sports.

Dave Fm is the worst “rock” station on the planet! Wuss rock at it’s worst. Don’t know how the new format will work out. Long term, I think it will eventually kill off 790 the Zone, with most of those personalities moving over there. Then, 680 the Fan will be crushed. Gonna take a year or two to really see how this all plays out.

Looking forward to a 3rd option. 790 and 680 have become stale. Dave Archer is about the only host worth a listen, and he is not even in this for the money, just having fun as an ex-player. The rest are just mouth breathing idiots. I lasted about 15 minutes with 680 in the afternnoon. Chernoff seems to never pass up a mirror, loves himself. Oliver is just a blowhard.

Both stations stink.

I’ll stick to ESPN radio on satelite.

Up here in Cumming–both of those stink for evening reception & quantity. ( 93.7 is a joke). Rarely listen to the FAN & 680 is great in the daytime. So, if 92.9 comes in clear at night–they may have a new listener.

Alternatives Welcome

Never cared much for 790, and I’d welcome an alternative to 680’s Up-Chuck and Turn-off for my afternoon ride home. It would also generally would welcome any station that would come in cleanly after dark in west Cobb – especially in the winter when the days are shorter. I work long days, leaving before daylight year round, and often coming home after dark. Even 680’s simulcast on 93.7 isn’t clean – one of the FM stations farther up the northwest corridor bleeds over into their broadcast in N’west Cobb.

Why is every radio blog filled with bashers? I myself prefer 680, but there is some decent talkent at 790 also. I will give the new station a try to see if they have anything that I like also.

680 has the better MLB and the better college football coverage.

790 covers the NFL better.

They both suck at covering the NBA.

680 needs to make their 93.7 FM station stronger to compete with the 92.9 station.

East Gwinnett (the part still gorwing) can’t even hear 680’s FM affiliate.

790 must run their station on solar power. After dark you can’t pick up the signal. I listen to both of them already, since you get a better signal based on what side of town you are driving through.A third station will give one more option for skipping the miserable local commercials for carpet cleaners and dodge dealers.

About time. Both are vulnerable. 680’s programming is all SEC football and nothing else. You can’t pick up 790 outside the perimeter and they spends more time on restaurant reviews and lame humor than sports.

Steak has more detractors than followers, so if 790 wants to survive, they need to dump him kwik. I like Cellini and Dimino as well as Buck and Kincaid on 680. 790 needs to dump Hans and let the Stews have their time back or they will be gone…..Chernoff is an idiot.

Don’t know what kinda crap radio you people have, but I can pick up the Zone almost to Dalton. At night, they both are forced to turn down bt the FCC. The Fan can’t just crank up the FM signal, either. You want mindless, you just keep tuning into ESPN radio and get your sniff of Tebow’s jock.

Mitch Evans at Davefm is already pretty solid.

I’d like to see Dave take the best from 680 (Sandra Golden, Matt Chernoff & Chuck Oliver) along with the best from 790 (Chris Dimino) for normal programming pairing Dimino & Golden in the morning and Chuck-n-Chernoff in the evening.

Add Tony Barhart and Wes Durham during the football season and a weekly show in the off season.

Landscape is ripe for good sports radio on a strong signal. 790 can’t be heard during their strongest show- mornings- and when I get them, the programming stinks- Barnhart, Durham, and the Stews are unlistenable. 680 has a terrible morning show besides Golden but Kincade and Oliver hold their own in the afternoon. Dave FM should hijack Cellini, Dimino, and Bell from 790 and Kincade, Oliver, Hometeam, and Sandra Golden from 680. Bring back Scottie Ferrell and they should have an unbeatable lineup. This plus Dave FM’s signal strength will crush 680 and put 790 out of business.

Here is my ideal line up.

AM – A pair of dirty socks, expired mustard and one of those things you use to check the air in your tires.

Mid day – The sound of a revving motorcycle….V Twin

Afternoon – Sarah Palin’s retarded child and a blender

Night – A guy eating popcorn.

That line up has ratings winner written all over it.

I will definitely give the new station a shot. I would hope we get new voices. As expected, everyone has their favorite and worst people from existing stations, so one’s man’s comic genius is another’s immature jerk (how many times can you listen to Hispanic impersonations in an hour?)

If the people on the air were in a mostly empty bar having a beer, and you were ease dropping, would you want to join them, or would you just wish they would keep it down?

I would only want to join those 3 of those groups. 790 mornings, 680 and 790 afternoon drives.

I wish 680 wasnt so painful in the mornings. Its like listening to wacky fm dj shockjock, annoying fan of every other team from a million places, and mr nothing out of the ordinary (who i loved as a coach- but he sucks as a personality). Makes me glad I dont commute far anymore. I choose to listen to 790’s commercials over 680’s morning show anymore.

Was glad to see 680 mix it up and put the more entertaining Chuck and Chernoff on in the PM’s. Buck and Kincade had gotten stale. Buck is Capt Obvious (though he seems likable) and Kincade is a pro but grows tired.

Mike Bell always makes me laugh.

Maybe a 3rd station would push the envelope. I just dont see how this city could support 3 sports talk stations. One of them wont make it. My guess is the new one wont, unless they really push the advertising and bring in some real talent (and gobble up some existing). But then if I were a radio entrepreneur and I listened to 680s AM show and then found out how long those guys had been on the air, I would want to join that party too. If thats the best, we can do better would be the thought going through my head.

BTW, I have NO personal bias. None of these guys have ever personally ticked me off. This is strictly based on my personal opinion as it relates to entertainment value.

jcwfalcon: Like your comments about 3rd station pushing the others, if for no other reason 790 HAS to think about their night signal. I’m beginning to doubt if there’s going to be an all out movement of folks from one station to the the new. It’s undoubtably a good time to be an agent right now for these guys. I think it’s hard to predict how long the new station lasts without knowing who the talent will be, recycled or new.

jcwfalcon I think 790 was content with their app providing the night coverage, coupled with the facr 680 wan’t faring any better. Add in the fact it was yahoo programming overnight and I think they thought they could ride. Now if we can get LOCAL talk after dark then I think they have to really make a move. I checked out KDKA in Pittsburgh, where the new program director is coming from… all local guys. I will be listening to them to see what to expect.

Good points Dennis. I would definitely test the water of a new stations programming. Especially if it were local. I would simply listen to what entertains me the most and keeps me the most current on the local sports scene.

Kind of going a different direction, but these personalities are so much more than radio during their segment anymore. I have gotten so I depend on several of them to provide me up to the minute updates, news, and somewhat informed opinions on that news via Twitter. That coudl be a factor on what some people choose to listen to. Thinking about it as I type this, I think Twitter can make you feel connected to the personalities more.

I dont get to listen to the radio as much as I used to because my days are so busy. But I know where most of the personalities stand on almost every major topic because I read it on Twitter when I have a couple of minutes.

I don’t want retreaded radio personalities of the past — we need new blood in the ATL sports talk arena.

And as important as College Football is, there are other sports out there.

Hopefully the new station is more caller friendly, more interaction with callers and not get cleared out after one segment.

I do not really listed to either station anymore except if a Braves or Falcon game is on.

Everyone has their opinion but MIke Bell irritates me and cannot stand him.

Don’t like the Stews either. I just do not like schtick.

I hope they are more serious about sports, 790 has degenerated into a bunch of nothing. It needs to go. Go back to playing the standards of the 40’s and 50’s than what they have now.

Disgusted, I disgree on the callers. 4 out of every 5 callers suck. I would rather hear the pros and talent discuss. I hear a caller and it makes me want to turn it off.

Disgusted

July 31st, 2012

jcwfalcon — With the way sports talk is run down here, callers really do not have that much of a chance to articulate an opinion and if they disagree with some hosts (Kincaide) they get slammed.

As for the pros and talent, do you really consider the likes of the Stews and Bell pros????

Its just not the kind of sports talk that I was reared on. And my preference is for the major league sports. But I deo understand that College Football will always be of most importance around here.

I think the callers are better than they are given credit for.

I do think we need new blood in the sports talk arena in this market. A guy like Beau Bock or Bell would not last in Boston or Philly.

I think ATL fans are smart fans, better than given credit for and deserve better than what some of the talking head media gives them.

Disgusted: Agree with you on getting NEW voices, rather than recycling. Like I posted elsewhere, one man’s comic genius is another’s immature jerk, so one act moving to another station carries AND takes away a station’s fan base. I for one would not want a “Vince Vaughn-wannabe-hey here’s my 100th Hispanic imitation of the day-gee-isn’t this funny” on the new station.
