Missy Franklin poses with her first gold medal (NBC).
But the network spoiled the event for millions of viewers just six minutes before the race, airing a promo for Tuesday’s “Today” show that began, “When you’re 17 years old and win your first gold medal, there’s nobody you’d rather share it with. We’re there when Missy Franklin and her parents reunite …”
And for the benefit of those who might have had their TV muted, NBC showed a full-screen photo of Franklin posing with her gold medal.
The Twitterverse wasn’t kind to the Peacock Network:
The 17-year-old Coloradan is trying to match East German swimmer Kristin Otto’s women’s Olympic record of six individual gold medals. Will NBC spoil them all?

If it’s not the Olympics, televised swimming events can’t even beat I Love Lucy reruns. There’s a hypocrisy when people only care about a sport every four years. Angry with the Olympics? Just ignore it. Problem solved.

I don’t understand what the big deal is. Sure, she didn’t get her medal ceremony shown on prime-time TV with suspense about who had won it. But she DID get her medal. And anyone who wanted to know could have found out, beforehand, that she won the Gold from multiple sources….like the internet’s social web sites (Twitter, Facebook, etc.). No one who new she won and is a “Twitter aficionado” could resist the urge to break the news; thus “letting the cat out of the bag” to thousands.

They need to show those swimming events live when they happen since 90 percent of us know the outcome by the time they air on tape delay. They can show them again at night so the rest of us can see them. Also–keep the nonsports like beach volleyball and synchronized diving off the air or put them late at night since nobody outside of California cares anything about those events.

The commercial had bad timing, yes, but I don’t know what else they’re supposed to do as far as delayed broadcasting. They can air it live when everyone in the US is at work, or they can air the entire thing later during prime time.

I don’t have a problem with this. We should be able to go on NBC’s site and watch downloads of the events as quickly as they are available. I would pay a fee, like an iTune payment to be able to do this. NBC expects America to sit through a bunch of crap, just to see specific events. We don’t have the time to do this, unless this country is now defined by how much television it watches.

Apparently, about the only thing NBC can do now is work underhandedly to suspend a newspaper reporter’s Twitter account because he dare express frustration with NBC’s inneptness! Posting a corporate email account which is a part of public record and lying to the world that Twitter suspended the reporter’s account “for sharing private information,” is part and parcel for this network.
NBC is currently managed by politically motivated cronies of questionable professional credentials.

The way it sounds it’s a great plan, but on paper it will bankrupt this country. How, think of this, you don’t need to sign up for it until you need it, they pay a tax (penalty) if you need it, so why would I sign up for it, until I need it. IT will tax the system to no end, and is the equivalent of calling Allstate 10 minutes after you had a car accident and expecting them to pay all of your repairs and medical bills if you just give them your deductible!…READ THE FACTS PEOPLE, it’s not about voting for a color or a rich person, it’s about what’s BEST FOR YOU and your future!… Obama is not the answer!!!

NBC USED to be my favorite network: they couldn’t find a decent replacement for Tim Russert; they bow down to Matt Lauer like he’s some sort of media gold (but in actuality he’s just a grossly overpaid prick); because of that Ann Curry got the most major shaft in modern television history; they think there ish doesn’t stink because they have exclusive rights to Olympic broadcasting in the U.S.; etc., etc., etc…
I can’t stand this network now, and have taken every recent move they’ve made personally.
As for the Missy Franklin botch, I think it shows how they are just trying so hard to remain relevant, but really have no idea what they’re doing. It’s painfully simplistic to say, but incompetence seems to run deep with that network.

Guys guys…………. just like Obama said…………anyone who did anything didnt do it on their own. Missy’s gold was not a result of her years of hard work and dedication, it was because the UK government paid for roads that allowed her to drive to the event, and because the internet was funded through the government and made it possible for her coach to order her some new goggles that she couldn’t find in a regular swimming store. C’mon people……..get it right………….. (extreme sarcasm_)

Mike, nbc is a staunch supporter of obuma. They are obviously in the tank for him. I don’t see people criticizing prezbo, yet it’s fully warranted considering how bad our economy is with 5 trillion wasted in 3 years under his regime. When you consider obuma’s slogan for 2012 is forward and msnbcs is “lean forward” well it becomes clear who’s on whose side. I know it’s hard for a leftist like yourself to hold back since you feel so let down by all the hope and change bs. Just remember, whatever you do in your life, it’s not you who did it. Gov’t did it.

I’m in London, so I haven’t seen NBC’s coverage, but I can tell you that what I have seen in the past on NBC Olympic coverage is far superior to what I am seeing on the BBC right now. A viewer here can barely follow the action because all the commentators are so focused on just the British athletes. They literally cheer for them on the air and hardly mention who medals unless it is a Brit. They also really avoid paying any complement to USA. But, the people of London and UK have been great host!

What’s going on with the medal ceremonies? If the Americans won Gold, they won’t show the bronze or silver medalists. What kind of coverage is this? We’d like to see all winners, especially the Americans but the other winners are important too. The 2008 coverage was great. I don’t know what happened.

NBC, what a joke. I was watching last night and had intentionally not gotten on ESPN, etc. to find out what had gone on. Of course, they show the lead intro and then Missy wins the gold. They ruined it! What a bunch of clowns! Of course, NBC is spending more time trying to get their #1 rating back for the Today show than anything else, so any plug they think they can give for the show is “worthy”.
You do have to cut NBC slack for the fact that England is 5 hours ahead of EST, so it’s impossible to watch anything live after about 5pm EST, and hopefully most of us are working at this point. With today’s instant media it’s impossible for them to “delay anything”. It’s kind of like when you DVR a football game (or Nascar race) b/c you gotta work or have something to attend to, and you go all day hoping some clown won’t bark out who won, etc. before you see it.
NBC’s coverage is okay, but I don’t need Ryan Seacrest as a host. Bob Costas is known for the NFL and Baseball. Period. Their choice of people to cover the events and do interviews is horrible. John McEnroe? Holy cow! I think he intimidates the athletes he’s interviewing! Surely they could have found some old olympic champions to cover some of the games and conduct interviews?
They do an excellent job with the KY Derby and the other two races, they could do more in this arena for the Olympics.

I missed it… To the fridge during the commercial and thought it went fine.
Folks, they are half way around the world for gods sake… Its 7:30 PM there right now….events have been going on all day and it’s now prime time there. Can you take the day off to go sit and watch real time or would you rather sit at home this evening watching delay???
Thats what I thought, Quit whining…. its not the end of the world?

I recently retired from 30 years in the Army. I served 21 years in Germany and saw a multitude of Olympics while in Deutschland. The NBC coverage is so abysmal that it is hard to put into words. The German Networks ARD and ZDF cover every event. There are few of these fluff stories. And they televise everything live, regardless of what time differences there might be with the Middle European time. Then, in prime time they will show hi-lites.
You would have to be a hermit to avoid knowing what is going on prior to prime time coverage at night. It completely ruins the games for me. It is sad and pathetic, but it is what it is.

Hell, even WXIA screws things up. If you are avid follower of the Olympics you have a pretty good idea who is doing what. When they suddenly, without warning show the medal table you can pretty much surmise what has been going on. I mean how dumb can you be?

If you can’t watch live streams and replays on demand at nbcsports.msnbc.com due to cable provider, try their iPad app, it doesn’t require that stuff.
Or, read a book. Or, have a beer.

Oh, is NBC airing the Olympics? I though it was one mega-marathon talk show.

Hey NBC DUUUUUUUHHH! ( I also remember when the local news did the same in 1980 before the U.S.victory over the Soviets in hockey) They actually flached the final score!
