NBC spoils Missy Franklin’s gold medal race

Missy Franklin poses with her first gold medal (NBC).

Missy Franklin poses with her first gold medal (NBC).

Missy Franklin is the star of the London Olympics for the United States, so naturally NBC wanted to delay her 100-meter backstroke race for prime time Monday night.

But the network spoiled the event for millions of viewers just six minutes before the race, airing a promo for Tuesday’s “Today” show that began, “When you’re 17 years old and win your first gold medal, there’s nobody you’d rather share it with. We’re there when Missy Franklin and her parents reunite …”

And for the benefit of those who might have had their TV muted, NBC showed a full-screen photo of Franklin posing with her gold medal.

The Twitterverse wasn’t kind to the Peacock Network:

  • Emma V. Haberl‏: Dear NBC, thanks for promoting the interview with “first time olympic gold medal winner missy Franklin”…MOMENTS BEFORE AIRING THE RACE.
  • Matt Knisely‏: Biggest failure in Olympic TV History? NBC showing the promo of Missy Franklin winning Gold in the commercial break before she raced.
  • Cecil Hurt‏: NBC airs Missy Franklin gold medal promo before the Missy Franklin race. In headline style: Network Extends Middle Finger To America.

The 17-year-old Coloradan is trying to match East German swimmer Kristin Otto’s women’s Olympic record of six individual gold medals. Will NBC spoil them all?

First of all she’s from Colorado, not Nebraska. Can’t you even check your facts?

If it’s not the Olympics, televised swimming events can’t even beat I Love Lucy reruns. There’s a hypocrisy when people only care about a sport every four years. Angry with the Olympics? Just ignore it. Problem solved.

I don’t understand what the big deal is. Sure, she didn’t get her medal ceremony shown on prime-time TV with suspense about who had won it. But she DID get her medal. And anyone who wanted to know could have found out, beforehand, that she won the Gold from multiple sources….like the internet’s social web sites (Twitter, Facebook, etc.). No one who new she won and is a “Twitter aficionado” could resist the urge to break the news; thus “letting the cat out of the bag” to thousands.

In 2012, there is no excuse for taped footage – they messed up the opening ceremony, they are screwing up the swimming and woe betide anybody who criticizes them on twitter… @guyadams

and this is coming from a network that says Obama can do no wrong………… now do you trust their judgement.

They need to show those swimming events live when they happen since 90 percent of us know the outcome by the time they air on tape delay. They can show them again at night so the rest of us can see them. Also–keep the nonsports like beach volleyball and synchronized diving off the air or put them late at night since nobody outside of California cares anything about those events.

what killed me was last night during the NBC night news, they said, SPOILER alert, if you dont want to know the results of the Swimming, turn your head. Then they put up a picture of Missy with her gold medal and then the voice over says, MISSY FRANLIN wins gold in the 100 meter backstroke….. funny I didnt think turning my head would make me NOT HEAR!!!!

The commercial had bad timing, yes, but I don’t know what else they’re supposed to do as far as delayed broadcasting. They can air it live when everyone in the US is at work, or they can air the entire thing later during prime time.

Congratulations Missy! Hope that all of this does not take away from your shining moment! Some of us (who don’t complain about everything) are very proud of your accomplishments and applaud your hard work and dedication. It is amazing how some people will find any excuse or opportunity to blame President Obama in situations where he is not involved. This is about Missy and her VICTORY! Enough already!

‘Non-sports’ like beach volleyball and synchronized diving? That mag be your opinion John, but I’d out money that you’re in the minority.

And Razorback – I’m not sure why it’s a hard concept. People that are mad didn’t WANT to know spoilers before the race was show. Of course twice info is out there – but some people purposely avoid it.

Joel, I guess because she swam in Omaha last month, she is now a Nebraskan!

Too funny.

We may not produce the world’s greatest swimmers, but we do know a thing or two about football.

What did you expect from NBC? Not only are they ‘in the bag’ for the Obama administration, they are trying to replicate his abysmal record of dismal flailing and blaming – or even ‘out-bad’ the Obamites…something that’s hard to do. But keep at it, NBC. At least it keeps MSNBC busy screwing up the Olympics and not the country.
No wonder no one watches this network – or their affiliated channels – anymore.

I don’t watch the Olympics because of all the BS reporting, especially by that idiot, Bob Costas. If they would just show the events and eliminate about 90% of the commentary, more of the events could be shown.

They are more worried about their Today Show ratings than letting people enjoy the race. They don’t have a clue, don’t care about the consumer and think it’s ALL ABOUT THEM. That’s why they are called the Nobama Broadcasting Network.

Glad she won; the Olympics are in London, 6 hours ahead of us folks. Expect the timezones to get us as these events are played out before they are aired. I have a Book of Mormon for all of you to read so we can prep before Mitt Romney takes office.

I don’t have a problem with this. We should be able to go on NBC’s site and watch downloads of the events as quickly as they are available. I would pay a fee, like an iTune payment to be able to do this. NBC expects America to sit through a bunch of crap, just to see specific events. We don’t have the time to do this, unless this country is now defined by how much television it watches.

@JamVet Exactly.

And what don’t some of you understand about people are going out of their way to AVOID things like twitter, espn coverage or anything else that may spoil the outcome before the events air. When you do everything you can do and NBC still mucks it up by giving the result away via a promo commercial, that just shows a lack of attention to detail and I wouldn’t expect that from a “major” network.
