Steve Spurrier has found a new foil in Ole Miss. (AP photo)
And he seems to have found a new foil — Ole Miss, oddly enough — to add to his favorite targets, Georgia and Tennessee.
His latest feud began a couple of weeks ago as he was complaining about Georgia seemingly having an easier schedule than the Gamecocks in the SEC East.
“You think I make the schedule? If I made the schedule Georgia would be playing LSU and we’d be playing Ole Miss,” he said.
Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze picked up on the slight and responded.
“We do play them in 2013,” Freeze said. “I will circle that one and hopefully change his perspective of Ole Miss football.”
Spurrier, of course, has never let anybody have the last word, so he used a visit to ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., this week to comment on Freeze’s recruitment of Penn State players.
While Spurrier told ESPN he’s “not actively recruiting any Penn State players,” it’s understandable, he said, that Ole Miss is: “They need some ball players there.”
The ball’s in Freeze’s court, but the first-year SEC coach might want to call a truce in the child’s game of “is not, is too.” Because when it comes to child’s games, Spurrier, like most kids, never seems to get tired.

Say whut is correct. I find Spurrier hilarious but I’ve never had any personal contact with him. Several mutual friends and acquaintances have, however, and will attest to the fact that his act gets old after a while.
Golf is a good example and he is a good one. One friend told the story of playing with him and said Spurrier would nail the ball down the middle of the fairway and out-drive everyone, all the while asking, “Did anyone see where that one went?” When I commented that I thought that was funny our mutual friend told me, “Yeah but that kind of crap gets old when its all day every day.”
A good friend of mine is a long time Florida booster and he told me in the mid 90’s Spurrier would be on the first train out of town the first time he lost four games in a single season. He was speaking methaphorically and I absolutely did not believe him. He told me I was dead wrong; that half the folks down there loved him because he won so much but the other half hated him because of his personality.
Sure enough, the program slipped a little and Spurrier “resigned”. My Florida friend was very quick to say “I told you so”. Living in Georgia, he was a little removed from things and liked Spurrier but he was right all along.

Why so uptight about it? Spurrier adds an element of fun to the game when he gooses his rivals. He has always done that, all the way back to his days at Duke, when he used to routinely make pointed jabs at UNC. I am a UGA fan, but I appreciate Spurrier for bringing some personality to the game. Are coaches supposed to hug their rivals and sing Kumbaya? What fun would that be for fans? Keep your poking stick, Steve.

I see a lot of hypocrisy here. Spurrier can talk trash about his opponents and its “all in good fun” or he’s just “speaking his mind.” But the same people who say those things would probably be the first to criticize a player for celebrating after a big play or hamming it up for the cameras on the sidelines. I see no difference in the two. In fact, when a player celebrates exuberantly after a play its rarely meant as disrespect to the other team. They’re just happy for themselves and for their team. Spurrier’s comments, on the other hand, are specifically designed to disrespect his opponents. Its okay though because its “all in good fun.”
Lot of BS hypocrisy there if you ask me.
Thanks.

You gotta love Spurrier. He is so good for football and the conference. If I were picking a best friend, doubt I would pick Spurrier. If I were picking a football coach, Spurrier would be at the top of the list. If UGA wanted to get over the hump, they would make the ball coach, the head coach. For those of you who admire Spurrier, I think he has cheapened the college football game. These are NOT pro’s, but college kids. Spurrier was the college coach who started this “run up the score” crap. Vince Dooley owned Florida for 20 years, and he didnt have to resort to that cheap crap. For those of you too young to know, Spurrier hates GA because we whipped his a## the year he won the Heisman….

Anyone care to bet that the “old ball coach” got his ass beat on a regular basis while growing up. I heard the mention or sighting of Bill Stanfill causes him to wet his pants. He’s a jerk who has control over football players, but lacks enough clout to persuade Augusta National to allow him to become a member. Thank you Mr. Billy Payne.
Try and imagine Spurrier if you are out socializing with him and are confronted by a thug wanting money. Does ANYONE think Spurrier would have their back—or perhaps how fast would he run for the tall grass.

If an SEC basketball coach said of the SEC tournament “I would rather play Alabama in the first round than Kentucky” I would neither be offended nor would I say that he was being “disrespectful” to our basketball team. I wouldn’t want Spurrier as a coach at this stage in his career. I question whether his heart is really in it. I think he’s playing South Carolina like a harp. Its just an experiment for him. He doesn’t care about South Carolina. Steve is all about Steve. Other than last year his team’s have been mediocre at best. In all the hoopla about UGA’s weak schedule last year nobody noticed that South Carolina played a pretty weak schedule too. They didn’t play Alabama or LSU either. They played heavyweights such as East Carolina, Navy and the Citadel out of conference. It took some miracles for them to beat UGA too. Alot of things went South Carolina’s way for them to win 11 games last year, but all Spurrier does is cry like a little girl. He’s an okay coach but past his prime. The only coach that I would rather have than Richt is Saban. That’s it. I like Les Miles but he seems to volatile and inconsistent to me. I don’t think we’d be much better off with him as our coach. Urban Meyer is a great coach and obviously ran laps around Richt but he’s an azz and I couldn’t support him.

Whine, whine, whine, whine…Most of these comments are being written by a bunch of poosies. There’s nothing sacred about college football; it’s just another corrupt sport: vegas gambling; abundant recruiting violations that everyone knows about but pretends not to know; punish a kid for taking a steak dinner while paying coaches/staffs millions of dollars; etc Meanwhile, kids are out on the field running into each other as hard as they can and often injuring each other on purpose. And for what–so a bunch of folk can sit up in the stands, at sports bars, and other places jumping and cheering for money, bragging rights, the opportunity to INSULT others from opposing schools, etc. Hey folks, it’s not a gentleman’s game; stop pretending that it is.
In general, I don’t think he said anything wrong (Georgia does have an easy schedule; Ole Miss does perennially land at the bottom of the conference and, therefore, do need some players). Also, the game is dominated by Type A personalities that are full of arrogance–some you hear about, some you don’t. Talking “noise” is fun to me and makes the games exciting in most sports. Some people cross the line, but it’s human nature. Spurrier’s UF teams were stacked with talent. How do these stacked teams happen? School legacy, coaching system in place, and other “standard” stuff? Or, the “Dark side”, driven mostly by the money and power that feeds recruiting violations? Many of the kids who are recruited to play at these “prestigious” universities couldn’t been seen on the campuses (for all kinds of reasons) where they play if they weren’t really good athletes.
So we should shut up, stop whining, and enjoy some college football. Let people talk noise; let kids celebrate there accomplishments; and let the fans drink themselves into a stupor while watching. That’s what this stuff is all about and it’s not going to stop because because a bunch of folk are whining about comments Steve Spurrier made–which we only do when we’re on the other side. We are Steve Spurrier and he is us. We may not do exactly what he does, but we’re all complicit in some way or another, while pretending to be innocent saints watching an innocent sport. Get the fick outta here!

As a classmate of Archie Manning, I remember Ole Miss’ glory days. Under John Vaught, we won 6 SEC championships. While recent successes have been sparse, Eli Manning did lead us to a tie for the SEC West with LSU in 2003, and we beat LSU in 2008 and 2009 on the way to winning consecutive Cotton Bowls. But I have to admit that Spurrier is right on the current facts. Hopefully Coach Freeze can turn things around in Oxford.

I think we all need to realistic about Georgia football. Under Coach Richt Georgia football has peaked. I like Coach Richt as a coach and as a person, but as a program there is nothing more he can accomplish at Georgia. Georgia will elect a Democratic U.S. Senator before they ever win a National Championship.

I hate to say it, but Spurrier is RIGHT. We need players, and Dudley not a chance we beat them in 2013. We have 0 talent and I mean 0.
If we played Valdosta State or West Georgia we would lose. Period! Houston Nutt left us desolate!

The reason Stevie boy hates UGa is because when he was the UF QB and had UF rated number 1 in the country and he was headed toward the Heisman, he had to play UGA in Jacksonville and the Georgia defense shredded him. He spent the day on his butt and Florida lost the game and their number 1 ranking.
He has never got over it because he is such a small man, well such a small person.

I like what “bamaguy” says, “Spurrier just says what the other coaches think”. He’s a breath of fresh air out there, esp. compared to the likes of Kiffin & Urban Meyer. Anybody that can win a conference championship at DUKE has to be respected. Come on, when Saban, Urban, Kiffin, Miles, etc can win a championship at a school like DUKE or VANDY, then they’re in that upper echelon. Anybody can roll into bama or southern cal and win if they have half a brain. Tradition gives you an upper hand right off the bat. The rest is just plug and play

Are you kidding me? Nobody is scared of South Carolina except maybe Clemson. Spurrier is washed up. He has the same amount of Nation Championships as Gene Chiznick over at Alabama Poly Tech. Big Whoop!

SOS has never been put on probation and his national championship in 1996 is one of the few untainted MNCs in recent history. He has integrity but not a scared guy who will not speak his peace. He is Bobby Knight without an anger problem. Great coach who lives by the rules but cannot abide the losers who are bothered by him, including the panty wringers on here.

As a Carolina alum, I claimed to hate him too when his Florida teams would destroy Carolina. I now profess undying love. In over 100 years of football futility, he has us winning. Some even claim we will win the East!. He may very well be an a%% h#&&, but he is my a** h(*&. He is loyal to the schools that he coached and speaks his mind, so be it. I would much rather hear that than the same old “they are a talented team”, “we have to take it one game at a time” bs we hear from other coaches.

Spurrier just says what everybody else is thinking and the local press won’t write. He kind of takes the void left from the local press turning into a PR machine for Georgia and I would imagine Tenn. He beat Georgia last year in Athens. The only reason he didn’t go to the SEC championship for the second year in a row was because he had to play a much harder outside schedule. He lost the first SEC championship game because Latimore was hurt in the first quarter and still was far more competitive than Georgia in that game. If this strange scheduling had taking place with Georgia this “child’s game” as you call it would be on steroids. This cost USC millions and made UGA millions, one simple game, Ole Miss and LSU. Probably the worse team in the conference and the best, now two years in a row. Cads are the powerful bullying the weak, the real cad here is the scheduler for the conference year after year. Remember Alabama was taken off the Georgia schedule this year.

One thing the press should think about is maybe their soft shoeing the reality of what goes on campuses in football programs might be, to some part, what caused Penn State. This homer mentality paves the way for the conduct we see in Athens which very well may be hiding a lot more than what they have to report because it is on a public arrest dockets. This “child games” are not quiet so funny any more. I truly doubt South Carolina will ever have the problem as long as a wide awake Spurrier is on duty. We actually need a 100 more like him to wake this child like press of jock worshipers up and start doing their jobs.

The only reason Spurrier took the South Carolina job was so that he could try to force the school to give his son the head coaching job when he retired.

GT Football provides a lot of scholarships for kids to go to school and get educated. A very small percentage of kids make it to the NFL, very small. In addition look at all the pub these kids get with TV. A very large percentage are household names. If they are successful in college, they don’t have a hard time getting a job. PERIOD. Football money also provides scholarships for other sports programs and their band programs. Money from football does so much good.

Except for DC Todd Grantham the DAWGS don’t have a quality coach. Make Grantham head coach and let him restructure the team. That will probably happen when Richt’s protector Mike Adams leaves – and that can’t be too soon.

I met Spurrier a year or so ago in a pizza reastuarant of all places and he is actually pretty friendly and funny. He just doesnt sit still and he doesnt have time to answer stupid questions like what he had for breakfast today. I love him though i hated him when he was at Florida cause his teams would wipe the floor with my team.

Is everybody missing the point? Fact of the matter is, Spurrier speaks the truth once again… Ole Miss has won what, 2 games, over the last two years. They need the players. Like him or not, Spurrier’s the only coach that speaks his mind. God bless him…
