Costas to ‘call out’ IOC over Munich

NBC’s Bob Costas says he will use the Opening Ceremonies of the London Olympics to “call out” the International Olympic Committee for its refusal to declare a moment of silence to honor Israeli athletes who were murdered at the Munich games 40 years ago.

Costas, who will be the lead announcer for the London Games, told the Hollywood Reporter that the IOC’s refusal to honor a request by Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon is “baffling” and he intends to take a stand during the Opening Ceremonies on July 27.

Said Costas:

“I intend to note that the IOC denied the request. Many people find that denial more than puzzling but insensitive. Here’s a minute of silence right now.”

In denying the request, IOC President Jacques Rogge said the Olympic committee has honored the Munich victims on several occasions in the past but would not do so in London.

The widow of one of the Munich victims told USA Today that the decision was more than baffling.

“I have to call the baby by its name,” said Ankie Spitzer, whose husband coached the Israeli fencing team. “The IOC’s refusal is pure discrimination. … greed and anti-Semitism.”

On Sept. 4, 1972, the Black September terrorist group, demanding the release of Palestinians from Israeli jails, kidnapped 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team, killing two of them in the process. The nine others were killed by the kidnappers during a rescue attempt by German troops.

Bob Costas should stick to baseball and keep his political statements to himself.

On a side note, I normally go to Chick-fil-a every Friday for 2 Chick-fil-A Sandwiches.

This Friday, in light of CFA’s public & controversial political statement this week, I will be ordering 3 Chick-fil-A sandwiches instead.

Bob Costas has been working the Olympics for NBC for about 25 years.
He knows all about the IOC, the Games, and what the event is about.
Now, despite his knowledge of the IOC’s commitment to making the Games apolitical, he wants to distract attention away from the athletes, and put it all on himself in order to discuss a very political topic. If that’s not the definition of a spoil sport, I don’t know what is.
Maybe it’s time for NBC to look for a new Olympic Chief Correspondent.
I’m thinking Colin Cowherd would work out nicely. Maybe even Ernie Johnson.

Bob who? Where does this so called expert on everything get the right to call out anyone. I don’t see any reason the honor should not be given, but you know that everyone is afraid of offending anyone. That is why so many in America get away with saying or doing what they want and comments by some cause super racial issues. The Isralies can honor their team by wearing a patch on their uniforms or by a small demonstration during the parade. Stop and light a candle.

If you think Colin Cowherd wouldnt say anything about “political events” then you are crazy. Cowherd is even more opinionated and outspoken that Costas. Bottom line is the IOC are a bunch of idiots plain and simple. Costas is good at what he does and should keep his post.

@ Lilly White
You actually make a fair point, but at the same time the Israeli athletes that were murdered on what will be its 40 year anniversary of the Olympics has a lot more to do with the olypics themselves than does the entire Israeli and Palastenian conflict as a whole. That’s why it’s relevant for Costas to have a beed and to want them to honor those athletes. If people want to debate the entire conflict and it’s history then the Olympics is not the place to do that. He is simply uspet that they are not honoring or mentioning the Israeli athletes. No palastenian olympic athletes were murdered so its not relevant in this case. The actual conflict away from the olympics is a different subject and people can honor who they want according to their beliefs. To blame or to not honor athletes because of somehting their country does, or was actually helped in doing, is ludacrous.

anti-semitism, little tired of that, of course it exists.. throw in some greed, yep you’ve got the right recipe. Perhaps the IOC should have a simple monument for the victims at their headquarters.

As for chick-fil-whatever: nice to hear someone stand up and shout their beliefs in this politically correct world. He wants to point out their refusal to acknowledge the 40th anniversary of this tragedy. That’s not a political statement or religious statement, that’s just reporting. Again….stop trying to combine the entire conflict to the specific athletes that were killed. Costas isnt complaining that they arent being recognized because they are Israeli….hes complaining because ATHLETES arent being honored at the request of the defense minister. Would be the same situation for Costas had it been a Spanish group of athletes that were murdered and the Spanish minister requested that. Your personal views on the Israeli and Palastenian conflict are irrelevant here. You have to separate the two. They deserve to be honored plain and simple. Somehow I think that the murdered athletes’ spirits hovering over the stadium will be saying “screw that and get on with the games. This is about what is good and noble in the human race, not what some mad men did 40 years ago.”

I’ve always liked Costas, but this is too much like politics, and he is reminding me of the politicians who take every opportunity to us 9/11 for their own ends. All martyrs to freedom need for us to honor them in our day-to-day deeds, living our lives as free people and fighting injustice whenever it raises it’s ugly head. The games have always been political. (Jesse Owens, Tommie Smith & John Carlos, “The Miracle On Ice.”) The IOC has never been apolitical or fair. (Roy Jones Jr., ‘72 U.S. Basketball team, Nancy Kerrigan, etc…) This should not preclude a recognition of atheletes murdered while attending the games regardless of what anyone thinks of their homeland or ideology. The IOC is wrong. They are politicizing the games by not memorializing these murdered athletes.

As I sit here munching on a Chick-fil-A sandwich, I had a few thoughts. I don’t think the IOC’s response is anti-Semitic, it is just another attempt by that group to cover up anything they believe will tarnish their “pristine” image. These fools could give FIFA or the US congress a run for their money when it comes to corruption. We have the various scandals of members selling their votes for host cities (including for the Atlanta games). As some other people have noted, these guys were real jerks during the Atlanta olympics. I’m sure their actions here were not unique.

However, I really hate Bob Costas. Perhaps he will become involved in a scandal with the men’s gymnastics team from Alybaba and the IOC will be unable to cover it up. Eat more chicken!!!!

Right. Do you have the same feeling when the circumstances of Jesse Owens accomplishements are recalled? For what purpose is that done? Or the Mexico City medal stand protest, which has been discussed in the MSM recently? I could keep going.

Fact is, Israeli athletes were abducted from the Olympic site and murdered or killed due to circumstances related to their abduction. They SHOULD be memorialized at the anniversary of this sordid crime, regardless of the underlying politics. If they were Russian, East German, North Vietnamese, North Korean or Muslim fundamentalist athletes I’d have the same exact opinion.

Right–they oppress Arabs by violently inflicting civil rights on them, just as Jews have done to Americans.

The IOC countries, and the US too, have been lying for Arabs for years. Read the ‘British Record on Partition’ and learn the truth: Zionism is anti-imperialism today just as it was back then.

I guess I’m curious, Bucky… It’s OK for you to appreciate Cathy’s remarks about homosexuality but Costas is not allowed to make any remarks about Jews being murdered at the Olympics? Strange set of values you have! Seems if one person is allowed to have Freedom of Speech the other one should be allowed to also….

The level of ignorance on the board is staggering today. Jews = a Race? Thought it was a religion. Better get into all those schools around the world and change the names from religion to race. So there are four major religions and one major race? And the references to Hitler are more than a bit stupid. Hitler was extremely atheistic, thinking all religions should be eliminated. In leftist societies such as fascist Germany, the only religion allowed is the religion of the state. The state is the center and reason for all being and it is your responsibility as a citizen to meld yourself to its call…sound kind of familiar in today’s world here in the US? We are much closer to fascism here than you think and have had at least a couple fascist regimes already under Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt (FDR). Read your history.

Palestine, as an entity, should never be allowed in the Olympics without apologizing for the actions of those who killed the Israeli athletes. That’s pretty simple.

Hard to believe the IOC can’t dedicate one minute in honor of the darkest hour in the history of the Olympics? Guess they are too busy trying to make a buck every second.

ncgreybr @ 4:57 pm,

“Bucky” said he/she would listen to Mr. Costas & his political view *IF* he could provide food of comparable quality to CHICK-FIL-A.

That selective perceptive and basic reading comprehension can be humiliating, can’t they, ncgreybr ?

Hmmm, the terrorists used the Olympics to make a political statement by killing athletes. So asking for those killed to be remembered at the Olympics by a moment of silence is a problem. I guess the IOC recognizing a country named ‘Palestine’ where it doesn’t exist isn’t a political statement either.

Rob said, “Look at the employees that work for chick fil A, then look at the thugs that work for Mcdonalds…. I will continue to buy Chick Fil A until the cows come home!!!….”

A more accurate statement has never appeared on this Web site. Now, not sure what it has to do with the Olympics, but dead on none the less.

Sick of Israel!

DUMB AND DUMBER-You have a lot of reading to do. Jews are a race and religion. There are people not of the Jewish race who follow Judaism, but Ortrhodox Jews feel you must be born a Jew racially…This is from a serious Jewish publication,

Bob Costas is so 30 years ago. Why is he still on TV? Maybe if NBC had someone relevant leading their coverage, I might actually care. Seriously, is this geriatric Howdy Doody the best they can come up with? How many times will he bring up Mickey Mantle’s name?

Here is the thing about Chick Fil A – the homophobic trailer trash will applaud their stance and say they’re going to go eat a chicken sandwich, and maybe they will sometime this week. However, they will not alter their long-term behavior at all. On the other hand, the LGBT community will probably not go back…ever. Also, straight people whose knuckles don’t drag on the ground might think twice about patronizing an establishment that’s so self-righteous, backward and judgemental. Bad business move…unless they like the Waffle House crowd.
