Report: Saints offer Brees record contract

Falcons fans hoping the Saints’ miseries would be extended by failing to sign their best player will be dismayed to learn that the team has offered Drew Brees the richest contract in NFL history.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune is reporting that the team and Brees are close to a five-year deal that would pay him between $19.2 million and $20 million a year — surpassing the $19.2 million a year the Denver Broncos are paying Peyton Manning.

The two sides have until July 16 to reach an agreement. If they don’t, Brees will have to play the final year of his contract at a meager $16.4 million under the franchise tag the team has applied to him. And he’d have to wait until after the season to negotiate a new deal.

Brees better than Aaron Rogers? Really? Don’t think so, and I am not a fan of either one of them. And, Rogers plays for a team that plays straight up and has classy fans. The Saints are known cheaters, and Saints fans – zero class. I have been to the dome and seen both sets of fans. Packer fans wear silly cheese hats. Saints fans are thugs with no class and no clue. And apparently no life.

Oh you are a Saints fan?

It’s amazing how Saints fans are everywhere since they won the SuperBowl. When they go 8-8 this year, they’ll go back to being Dallas Cowboy fans like they were before. A bunch of bandwagon riding frauds.

Good. My hatred of the Saints aside, the Saints are nothing without Brees and he is really truly one of the good guys in the NFL. Good to see the Saints step up and pay him his true value.

Brees is better than Manning right now (results) and I’m a Falcons fan. He was a likeable guy until this year, but he deserves every dime he gets paid and it should be more than Manning.

So much for small market New Orleans not having the capital to support an NFL team, right? Wasn’t the team owner (Benson) seeking all kinds of handouts from the city, state and league?

@ Dave H.

No, Tom Benson has enough capital (credit) to support the team. Face it, New Orleans is a broke city, always has been and always will be. Not even touching on how stupid yall are, all you guys are good for is cooking a good meal and getting wasted. When it comes to actually getting money and doing productive things, the entire N.O. metro is a novice at best. I saw this first hand after Katrina when FEMA and other govt. agencies were handing out gravy train contracts to any moron with an LLC and a business plan, and none of the idiot locals down there took advantage of it. All you needed to do was fill out a bid packet and you were good to go, s_rew if you actually knew how to do the work that was asked, and all the locals wanted to do down there was drink and party. So lo and behold contractors from ATL, Texas, and Florida went down there and got rich, right in your own backyard, and most of the time they didnt even do the work. New Orleans people are some of the lasziest, no money getting, brokest people in the country. Both black and white, it doesnt matter down there, everybody is a lazy bum…..

GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!

Regarding the article i feel brees is currently as if not more valuable than p manning, therefore being highest paid isnt completely unreasonable, especially since he has been underpaid in the past. The other factor to consider is inflation. In four years this may not be the highest dollar contract; brees deserves his glory now. Perhaps brees will take a pay cut in the future if necessary to keep key players

Seems to be lots of posts here about the classiness of New Orleans fans. Just a quick summary of how the locals are representing their city:

“The city of New Orleans has been rebuilt enough…MOVE YOUR GDMF’N FUNNY TALKING A$SES BACK DOWN THERE!!”

“I just hope the levee’s break again and wipe that miserable city off the face of the earth!!!!!!!!!!”

“Sooner or later nature will take it’s course and wipe that (below sea level) septic pool off the face of the earth.”

The Atlanta fans in here are as dumb as can be. If the Saints sign Brees to a recored contract and the offer him straight up for Matt Ryan in a trade, every Falcons fan on this board would be so excited they would _________ (you can fill in the blank because what I want to write would be deleted). Oh someone will come in here and say they prefer Matt Ryan over Drew Brees and would not make that trade, then in January next year be crying in their beer because Ryan could not even lead the Falcons to 2 points in a playoff game.

Birdwatcher:
“the falcons made drew Brees who he is today! By playing the falcons 2 times a year he’ll go down as the best QB to ever play the game.”

Now THAT’S funny. Sad, but true – you can pretty much pencil him in for 350+ yards in the air for those two games against a pourous, intimidated Atlanta secondary.

However, under the Nolan regime, all of that will change. The team will attack on all downs, and don’t be surprised to see a Falcon knock that birthmark off Brees’ face this season. GO BIRDS!

1st- Congratulations Drew Brees. Hard work and talent have really paid off. I don’t agree with sports figures being paid this much, but if the team has this much to pay a sports figure(s) then they have way more money than this and who should get it but the folks doing all the hard work.

2nd- I ask the Lord to forgive all you meanspirited, hateful, name calling folks that can’t even discuss a topic without injecting racial and poverty related slurs. Certainly you know that this kind of evil, hateful rancor and venom accomplishes nothing.
