Report: Saints offer Brees record contract

Falcons fans hoping the Saints’ miseries would be extended by failing to sign their best player will be dismayed to learn that the team has offered Drew Brees the richest contract in NFL history.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune is reporting that the team and Brees are close to a five-year deal that would pay him between $19.2 million and $20 million a year — surpassing the $19.2 million a year the Denver Broncos are paying Peyton Manning.

The two sides have until July 16 to reach an agreement. If they don’t, Brees will have to play the final year of his contract at a meager $16.4 million under the franchise tag the team has applied to him. And he’d have to wait until after the season to negotiate a new deal.

Payton Manning should not be getting that kind of money. With his current medical history, he is one or two hits away from the sideline for good. Brees is the best QB in the league right now. The Broncos do not have the O line to protect Manning. We’ll see who’s right shortly.

the AFC west division champs, Broncos will remain exactly that in a less than stellar conference. Manning’s numbers will be better than Bree’s in the 2012 season b/c of the differences in defenses of the NFC south and AFC west. I think Brees is unquestionably the best quaterback in the league even if Manning’s stats are better. By the way, i hate the saints, but lot’s of respect for Drew Brees.

If drew brees marches the saints to the playoffs this season with all the turmoil in the off season, well, then he is worth every penny of that contract. Al, perhaps no player is worth that money; however, it’s fans of the NFL that supplies the demand, and therefore, we set the salaries of these players. I do believe he is worth more than peyton.

I agree. The Saints are overpaying. No ONE player is worth that kind of money, because it’s improbable, if not impossible, that the player will be able to sustain the kind of productivity year-over-year that earned him that money in the first place. Brees is not Peyton Manning. Even with Manning’s surgeries, I would still take him over Brees any day.

It really is a shame that the old timers who paved their way for these MULTI MILLION DOLLAR MEN never had the opportunity to get paid this kind of money NOR does the NFL take care of these guys who are basically broken down physically. That kind of crazy money could help a lot of them who suffer all kinds of medical ailments by giving it all the game that they REALLY loved playing. Instead of “R U READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?” it should be “R U READY TO BE GREEDY?” the motto for the NFL!

I have to agree with almost every post so far. No one person is worth that kind of money, but Drew Brees is extremely talented and will probably lead the Saints to Victory again this year. I’m not a fan of the Saints, but I will give Kudos where Kudos are deserved.

I’m a Falcons fan, so I don’t really like the Saints. I grew up just outside of Denver, so I’m also a huge Bronco’s fan. I’ve never seen Payton in person, and would love to get tickets when they come to town in September. I think that would be a great treat. I’ve seen Elway up close and personal and he is by far my favorite QB EVER!!!!!!

But I do love me some Matty Ryan!!!! Go Falcons!!!!

Who day! Drew dat! And I did move my a$$ back to Louisiana in 2000 so I was in Baton rouge for Katrina. The only thing I left behind was my son’s body in a grave while Georgia paroled his killer after 10 years of a life sentence so Georgia has no room to talk. Don’t hate because when we went to the SB, we actually won it and didn’t have one of our starters arrested for soliciting for prostitution hours after accepting an award for morality and ethics. So remember others can trash talk truth about Falcons as well. You geaux, Drew! You do so much for NOLA and the only Falcon that did anything real and consistent for Georgia was Warrick Dunn who also did the SAME thing every year in Baton Rouge where he was born in honor of his mother who was a police officer killed in the line of duty.

As a saints fan and a hated failcants fan, I say when Brees does sign his contract you can put another sweep of the lowly failcants in the books. Some not all of you failcants fans are pathetic. Don’t hate on us because we’ve actually won a super bowl and your team continues to struggle. Your team only scored two points in a playoff game how pitiful.

As Drew is a Boilermaker, like myself, I feel good about his accomplishments. As a Falcon season ticket holder, I gotta pull for him to be put on his but a few times a game.

And those that complain about the salaries, first, why are you here? Second, if you’re watching the NFL enough to know who these guys are, then you too, are the reason they get paid so much.

Brees and his entitlement mentality are playing in the perfect city – a city consistently demanding additional “entitlements” from governments at all levels. They still use the Katrina excuse for their situation in life. I hope Brees gets every penny he “needs” and the owner has to significantly raise the season ticket prices so Saints fans can complain that George Bush and Hurricane Katrina are still keeping them down and that someone needs to pay for the Saints tickets to which they feel they are entitled.

Brees will end up getting hurt and not playing anyway. History shows that all players that re-sign for a whole lot of money don’t end up playing due to injury or jail. Drew Brees will have a career threatening injury and won’t even get to earn that money.

Also, congrats to the aints for joining the patties for becoming the second asterisk *SB winner* in history. If you *aint* cheating, you *aint* trying.

I don’t believe anyone is worth that kind of money. I will put Drew Brees in the same class as other elite QB’s in the NFL. Brees, Tom Brady, & Aaron Rogers are the top 3 currently in my view. Peyton Manning could very well jump back into that group with them, but I’ve got to see how he responds to the neck surgery first. I hope he can. He can read defenses as well as anybody in the league.

Hey Bob Bloblaw, what do you mean he shouldn’t get Peyton Manning money? Who won the last time they went head to head? Al, there are 31 NFL starting quarterbacks (32 if you count Matt Ryan). Don’t you understand economics?

The person who wrote that article, Mike Triplett, said in the comments section of the original article, that the article was pure speculation based on his opinion of when the deal would be done. ESPN hasn’t reported it, NFL Network hasn’t reported it. It didn’t happen. No deal has been offered to Drew. So lets not get our hopes up just yet.

The way the Saints are structured offensively, Brees should get that kind of money. They know how to spot and develop offensive talent. Every skill player on that team plays up while they’re there, and Brees is the lynchpin. Defensively they’re going to be a mess, unless Lofton can pull them together in the first half of the season. If they get to the playoffs this year, it will be because of Brees. Even if he doesn’t have the best stats (I can see Matt Ryan having a better season than Brees statistically), if he gets them there he should be MVP.

The entire ‘Aints organization is a disaster, much like the city itself. Corrupt, dishonest, and downright stupid in every respect. As goes the city, so go the ‘Aints…downhill all the way. Not only is this urine-stenched slum of a city literally and figuratively under water, so is their football team. I hope Breeeeeeeze signs this deal….with every stoke of the pen, it will signal the final demise of that franchise, which will ultimately end up moving from LA to L.A.
