Did you see the Braves’ comeback?

The Braves scored seven runs in the ninth inning to stun the Reds Thursday at Turner Field.
We have three questions for you, Braves fans.

1 — Where were you? At work? At home? Listening on the radio?
2 — Did you give up when they were down 8-0 in the second inning and miss the whole comeback?
3 — If you watched it, is this the greatest comeback you’ve ever seen? What others would you compare it too?

If you did miss it, Sport South will replay the game at 11 p.m. tonight.

Also, here’s the view from photographer Curtis Compton: and a recap from the AJC’s Carroll Rogers.

1. I was at home. I was not feeling well and left work early. I put the Braves on as I dozed.
2. I did give up in the second inning and shut off the gamecast at work before I left. I just put them on for background noise when I got home.
3. It was the best comeback ever. I’m trying to find the six run comeback the Braves had back in the 90s. I think that was against the Reds too. I heard it on the radio at work.

The biggest Braves comeback I can remember was when they overcame an 8-1 ninth-inning deficit to beat the Phillies in May 1994. That game ended up going 15 innings, I believe, with pitcher Mike Stanton getting the game-winning hit with a chop bunt over the infield.

What about the one against the Orioles a few years ago. (Last time the Bravos made the playoffs?) That one turned the season around, but still wasn’t as exciting as this one!

i actually blame the AJC for me missing this.

i listened the first 8 innings at work and then had to step out briefly. when i came back, i logged on to check the box score and they had a zero in the bottom of the ninth column, so i thought the game ended 9-3. if the game is still going, don’t fill in the box yet!!!!!

great game, great win. let’s go get em on the road.

I was at work, watching the first few innings on MLB.tv, and then flipping over to radio once it got out of hand. I was trying to raise my brother on the phone who had turned it off to get back to work. (He’s already apologized to The Braves for doubting.)

When Conrad’s homer cleared the wall, I had to cover my mouth to keep from yelling out loud and outing myself for watching baseball at work.

So I just convulsed quietly in my seat at my desk.

WHAT A WIN!!! I feel some momentum for this team!

I was at home, and was jumping back and forth between a soap opera and the Braves as the later innings were winding down. Hey, in the 2nd and 3rd innings, I felt sure we could make up that gap! But down 9-3 in the 8th, I have to admit, I had lost my faith. Thank goodness I follow AJC on twitter and saw the alert that we had the bases loaded, no outs, and Heyward at bat in the bottom on the 9th. So long Port Charles, I had to see what was going on at Turner Field! Now THERE was some drama, from Heyward running the count full to getting struck out swinging by Rhodes….and Conrad’s fly ball looking like it was going to get caught at the wall (heck, he was making the turn for the dugout) to it bouncing over for the homer…yes, that is the kind of drama I adore! Go Braves! (and yes, Turner Sports, I will be watching again at 11 o’clock, you can tell your advertisers that.)

Well, I was at the ballpark enjoying a beautiful day, despite Tommy Hanson getting shelled for 8 runs in the second inning. Most of the crowd began leaving after the 7th inning, but we hung around to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. What a treat the ninth inning was! Everyone was chopping and chanting on the way out afterwards–you’d have thought we won another world series. Kudos to Bobby for letting Conrad (whoever that is!) pinch-hit at the last minute. Thrilling.

I was in my car riding on a spare tire. I was about to go to the gas station to have a nail removed from my flat but I had to come home to see what I knew would happen.

I knew that game wasn’t over and by the time we came up with about four straight hits, well, I knew we were going to win.

I remember a game back in ‘94 when they scored seven runs in the 9th to tie it and they won it in extras. I didn’t actually get to see it but I remember thinking at the time only a team as good as the Braves could pull off something like that.

But the game this one most closely resembles is one from September 2007 against the Phillies where I think we scored eight runs in the last two innings and it was capped off by a two out bases loaded double by Matty that just got away from the right fielder.

They play the highlight of Yunel scoring the last run all the time. It was pretty sweet.

I guess if you have to wait at least three years for games like these you can live with it.

1 — At work – but work from home.
2 — The game was on, but I was paying zero attention to it. When Heyward struck out, I was sure it was done. The Braves are a double play magnet.

Checked in on it online at the office….saw we were way behind and forgot about it until the bottom of the ninth when a co-worker mentioned we were rallying. “Watched” the rest online and could not believe it when the score instantly changed from 9 to 6 Reds to 10 to 9 Braves. Co-worker in the next office came in, red faced from the sun….was at the game and LEFT IN THE TOP OF THE NINTH. 3. This ranks up there as one of the greatest. Hard to beat that Sid Bream slide home for the win in the bottom of the ninth in ‘92.

Good call Adrian. I was thinking of that myself. Good movie but man, I really liked the Red Sox a lot more before they started winning World Serieses. I was excited for them in ‘04 but then I was immediately like, “wait, that’s not supposed to happen.”

I rooted for them to beat the Yankees and that comeback was pretty amazing but somehow it felt right when they lost in ‘03.

Why the hell am I talking about the Yankees and Red Sox?

1. I got home and started watching while working at the top of the 8th.
2. I started watching because the golf tournament was in a delay.
3. It was a tremendous comeback because it gave great ups and downs with the bobbled ball at third and then Heyward up to bat and you knew it was over then but he struck out. Then another rookie Conrad was up against the Red’s closer with a full count. But wait, the ball has been caught…no! A grandslam…tremendous finish! Maybe the best ever in a regular season game.

I was at home trying to watch Simon Cowell on OPRAH today, while flipping back & forth between that show & the game. Needless to say, I only saw a grand total of maybe 15 minutes of the show. I jumped up screaming when the ball caromed off of the Reds’ OF’s glove. It was looking pretty good with the bases STILL loaded anyway, whether Brooksy could do anything on that at-bat or not. This win changes everything. The Braves are now one game over .500; they gained something in the standings (gotta check, though…the Phils won I think, though); and they go to Pittsburgh on a winning streak. When you have a team who has come back two days in a row in the 9th inning to win coming into town — as the Pirates have in facing the Braves — you better get real nervous. This was the largest deficit in FRANCHISE HISTORY that the Braves have ever overcome! Gotta love it, Braves’ fans!

1 — I was at home in sunny Southern California, watching the braves via mlb.tv on my crappy 13″ apple laptop screen. I was in the kitchen because my carpets where being cleaned and I couldn’t get into my room. I watch every game I possibly can and don’t ever give up on the team.
2 — I did leave for lunch and miss three innings but I came back and saw it all unfold, I knew we where going to have a good chance of actually completing the comeback when I realized Jason Heyward would get another at bat. Luckily, Brooks picked up Tommy and everyone else today. Good job by the bottom half of the order today.
3 — I think just because my affinity towards the Braves and in the stage it took place in, I believe this may be the greatest I have seen in a long time. Not to mention, this game puts them back over .500 and may spark the team to go on a big run.

Now…who else wanted to see Chipper up there at that at bat?
The depth of this team is phenomenal.

2 — I missed part of the middle of it. Judge Judy was more entertaining than the middle innings. I did catch all of the 9th, beginning with Kimbrel taking the mound.

3 — No. The game against Cincinnati in 1991 where Charlie Leibrandt gave up a 1st inning grand slam to Joe Oliver to put us down 6-0 and David Justice hit a 3-run bomb in the 9th was bigger. It meant so much more to us suffering Braves fans. “Braves lead! Braves lead! Braves lead!”

I especially liked when Powell said something like this: “Heyward’s just five batters away. What’s he going to do this time? Hit a two-run homer? A grand slam? Maybe he hits a six-run homer?”

I’m proud to be an avid Braves fan and would have been there to the end. So tonight, I can tell the boys, “Yes, it’s okay to watch Baseball Tonight this evening.”

As for the greatest comeback, this ranks among them for sure. That Phillies-Braves game mentioned above ranks among them as well. I remember when I was 12 or so and saw the Cards-Braves go extra innings. I can’t remember the year. It was in the seventies.

In 92, we were only down one run when Bream slid home, but there was so much at stake in that game.

1 — I was watching on the TV at my desk at work and shouted out a dirty work in exclamation when Conrad’s homer cleared the fence!
2 — I didn’t think they could come back from that deficit, but I’ve learned not to give up on this Braves team.
3 — I’ve played in a bigger softball comeback, but I can’t think of a bigger Braves comeback.

I find it annoying that http://www.MLB.com currently features an article about Pettitte and the Yankees taking on Tampa Bay. It seems the Braves achieved something incredible that would be worthy of the top story. Or, at least feature the story about Hanley being scorned by Dawson and Perez.

1.I was actually at the game, it was awesome too bad a lot of people left early. If I was going to take a half day of work, I definately would spend it at the Ted.
2 I wasn’t happy, but baseball and beer are always good. It was nice to see a lot of the young pitchers. Jesse Chavez did real well and throws real hard for a little guy.—
3 Its definately up there, especially live. The walk the Ross had and McClouth’s double were all clutch. I can’t compare it to anything live.

Was following on MLB Gameday at work. Stopped paying attention when it was 9-1. Went to lunch, came back to check the score and it was 9-6 with the bases loaded and Conrad up. Fired up MLB.TV just in time to watch the walk-off granny. Unbelievable.

Anyone remember that game against the Padres a few years ago where the Pads made a bunch of errors and the Braves came back to win in the 9th on a Diaz hit? Seems like they were pretty far down in that game too.

3. I flipped back when I got notifications on my phone that we scored. And that had to be the 3rd most amazing Braves moment I’ve ever seen.

2. World Series win. 1995
3. Conrad Brooks Pinch Hit Grand Slam 2010
4. Otis Nixon’s catch 1992 “HE CAUGHT THE BALL”

I took a half day and picked my 7 year old up from school and took him to his first Braves game. Left later than I wanted and we got in our seats in the 2nd inning down 8-0(driving from Ringgold). We planned to stay and make the most of it being it was his first game. We moved closer to the field in the 7th and stayed put for the rest of the game. He and I cheered our hearts out!! It was the best comeback I have ever witnessed and being it was his first big league game…well. It was truly amazing and I’m so thankful I was able to share this moment with my son! GO BRAVES!!

My husband and I were at home watching it. It was the greatest comeback we have ever seen. We really did not think they would win when they were down 8 runs and when they started scoring in the 9th inning, we still didn’t think they would win but we were glad they were making a game of it. When they did win, we hollered, you could probably hear us in Atlanta.

I was at school when the Braves were heading into the 9th. My last class of the day.

After the class was over, I ran to the train station.
After the 10-minute ride, the Braves were trailing 9-6.

I was humming the tomahawk chop. I ran from the train station to my house in 4 minutes – which is a 20-minute normal walk.

I rushed in my house, turn on the TV, and Conrad was rounding the bases. I slammed the table, went on my knees and say ‘Thank you God!’

I was screaming at my friend, who is a Reds fan.

I was at home (had the day off) and I never quit watching but I had my doubts. It was the best Major League comeback I had ever seen but not the best baseball comeback I had ever seen. In high school in the regional round of the tournament my team was down 10 to 0 in the last inning (7th in high school) to a team that was not even close to being as talented as we were. NO JOKE the first 2 batters struck out and with 2 outs we scored 11 runs to win the game 11 to 10…it was amazing.

Anyways, I had the plasma turned to Sportsouth, hyped from the Peruvian and Hennessey shots, I glanced up between some lovely booty cheeks to see Brooks Conrad hit the winning, walk off grand slam!!! I threw the two hoes off my lap, grabbed the Peruvian off the table, put on my pants, and bolted out the door with one shoe and one sock on, like a crackhead. I ran through the parking lot, weaving in and out of cars screaming ” Go you mutha #$%^ Braves!!!!”, did the stanky leg dance with some drunk derelict alcoholic, and revved up the moped, and screached out to my apartment, and passed out watching some fat chicks fight on tv….I was on Cloud 9 and havent come down yet…

1.- I was at home, both “watching” the game on Gameday and listening on the radio.
2.- At first, I wasn’t giving up. After the Reds’ 8-run 2nd inning I posted something like “let’s score 1 run on each remaining inning and don’t allow another one” on Carroll Rogers’ blog. Then, in the ninth, I thought “Man, if he gets through this inning he could get a 3-inning save. It s^cks for us”. Soon after that the Braves started the rally and started wondering “why isn’t Cordero up there for the Reds?”. During Heyward’s at-bat, I realized we only had Conrad and Clevlen available and thought “Conrad could do some damage if something goes wrong with Heyward”. But I didn’t expect a Grandslam out of him.
3.- This is the biggest comeback I’ve ever followed. I think the Mariners did something like this in 2002 or 2003, I think, but I wasn’t watching that game, just saw it on the news.

By the way, it was nice to see all the coverage the guys on ESPN’s SportsCenter did.

Amazing win.

2. I didn’t give up on them in the 2nd inning but I was really pissed when Escobar and then McCann hit into those double plays. I thought we had blown or chances and then when Heyward struck out in the 9th I again thought it was over. When Conrad hit the ball and it bounced off the wall I was running around like a chicken with his head cut off could not believe it!

AT WORK! ARGH!

I had been listening to it on the radio in my office earlier but the reception had a lot of static in it so I turned it off when the score was 9-3 and pulled up gameday to follow the score. Even when they started coming back in the 9th, even when they loaded up the bases, even when Heyward came up to bat with the bases loaded I didn’t bother trying to get my radio going again because I still didn’t think it was possible.

On my way home from work I got calls from 3 family members who had been watching at home asking me if I had heard about it yet. Haha awesome.

It was 9-3 in the top of the ninth when I jumped into the shower. Expecting the game to be over when I got out, I was extremely surprised when I saw a 9-5 score with two on and no outs in the bottom of the 9th. I was glued! After Heyward struck out, I left for work thinking they had a good go at a comeback but it just wasn’t going to be their day. Then the Grand Slam! I tell you listening to the baseball game on the radio on the way to work can be hazardous to your health! Great Game Braves!

I had the fortune to be at the game when Heyward had the walkoff the night before as well as the dramatic comeback vs Arizona last week.

I had acually not been able to watch/listen to the game UNTIL the 9th inning and heard hinske’s single to make it 2 on , 0 outs. History from that point on…

I must say that the drivers by might have thought that I was a little strange as I was dancing and screaming in my car….alone. :)

Don’t think it’s the greatest comback I’ve seen – I remember a game where the Phillies and Mets were playing and one team scored like 9 runs in the 9th….can’t remember who won – I was a pre-adolescent. But this is probably the best Braves comeback I’ve seen.

I can definitely sense a newfound excitement when I attend games this year (I’ve attended 7 to this point) as opposed to last year. I could feel it on Opening Day, and it remains as of my last game attended. I’m hoping it will be a special year as the players’ coach calls it quits!

I had been listening on the radio but turned it off during the 2nd inning. My car battery was dead (from listening to the game last night while i was outside and didn’t turn the key all the way when I went in =0) and I was switching over the battery from my truck to crank it up. That battery hadn’t been used in over a year, and it was also dead, but it had JUST enough juice to pop on for that final pitch. Not 20 seconds afterward, the battery fizzled out and the radio went off. It was a remarkable coincidence and I certainly got the feeling that a higher baseball power wanted to make sure I knew the Braves were turning the season around right now. Go Braves!

Did ya’ll hear the latest on Hanson? Apparently he hadn’t been feeling well for a couple of days, and was dizzy throughout the game. I don’t know, but if you’re sick and your job is as an athlete, you should probably call in sick instead of trying to tough it out. Now he sees what happens when he does try to tough it out. Its ironic that I was off and thought about going to a day game. Then, I thought to myself after the 3rd inning—boy Im glad I didnt spend the money to see that disaster!(we were losing bad of course). And then Cox brought in Chavez that had been burned bad the last time he pitched. I thought he’d give up more runs!

I finished up outside and came in to cool off. Flipped the game back on and Troy Gauze had just got a hit to start bottom of the ninth. Its funny but with each hitter, I felt both a sense of doom and a sense of ok-sumthins gonna happen!

I was watching the game at home. When the score was 9-1, I decided to cut off the game and head to the gym after another errand. When I was driving into the parking lot at the gym, the radio announcers were talking about how the Braves were conceding 2nd base to the Reds’ baserunner and talking about how it is an unwritten rule not to run up the score. One of the announcers said it was dumb and asked if the team that is 6 runs down would agree also not to come back and win. When I left the gym, the game had just ended. I heard the replay of the granny and laughed. Way to go, Brooks!

i turned it on the radio as i was leaving work thinking the game was probably just ending. actually the 9th inning was just starting. for some reason i got a weird feeling that we may just give them a finish today. at the very point the announcer says, “well why don’t we at least give’em a finish.”

i have 30 minute commute to work and the ninth lasted just that long–all the pitching changes and the rally itself culminated with the grand slam as i was pulling into my subdivision. i’m not going to lie–i had goosebumps. couldn’t wait to see the highlights to see exactly what happened for myself. incredible stuff–the radio call was good but i don’t think the announcer had any idea the ball had a chance off the bat. something like, “conrad hits on toward left, back, back near the wall, did he catch it? no it’s a grand slam and the braves have won it 10-9.” at that point i was pumping my fist and laughing like crazy pulling into my driveway. great win!!!!!

I was on a business trip in Florida. I was North of Tampa, in Brooksville. I had more or less given up on the game. When I saw 8-0 and then 9-1, I was pretty much done. Even when I checked my blackberry and it said 9-3I might have been slightly encouraged, but still,”it’s over.” Anyway, I went into a meeting. By this time, I was driving on the Sunshine Parkway back to Tampa. I checked the score. “10-9.” Surely that can’t be right. I started texting my friends, “is that score, right?” Some of them had to go and check it for themselves because they too had lost interest in the game. Needless to say, everyone started going nuts on the blackberry. Awesome comeback. Big win. Got us over .500. Let’s keep it up…

I was on my way to work, listening on the radio, and was almost there when the comeback began – I pulled over to hear the ending. I walked into work feeling proud of the Braves.

Was just leaving the Capitol building at 3:45 and was listening on the radio on my way home. I bet all those people who left early were kicking themselves.

1 – Work (watching on Gameday)
2 – No
3 – Not the greatest comeback, if it would have been a post-season game then maybe, but Sid Bream sliding across home is still more of a meaningful comeback than any I’ve seen since.

1. In my car, stuck in traffic on way home, no radio, following game on iphone with baseball app, literally right outside of Turner Field on the highway, saw the score was 9-6 with bases loaded, and then I looked at the stadium and I saw the fireworks exploding from the coke bottle, AMAZING
2. NEVER GIVE UP ON BOBBY COX
3. Yes, it is the best comeback ever in baseball

at home in my room. I was flipping back and forth to a movie I was watching. And then the 9th inning came and then after each runner got on base and then we started crawlin back and then when J-Hey came up was thinking wow we really are gunna win this game. And He struck out I still had the feelin it was going to be something special. Conrad came up with that 2 2 count and I was like omg thats gone isn’t it! I started sceaming and running around the house as he rounded the bases!! Simply amazing!

1) I was at the game sitting in the outfield pavillion in left field surrounded by Red’s fans.
2) Stayed the entire game. Once the bases were loaded, I knew the Reds were in trouble.
3) This is the best game I’ve witnessed live.

1. I was there!
2. I make it a rule never to leave before the final out. Lots of folks around us left, but I stayed. Lucky me! :-)
3. This is by far the greatest comeback!! The stars aligned at Turner Field yesterday! Hopefully this homestand is the start of something great!

i was at the game… we got these home dougout seats 11 rows up. we got there right when the reds hit their GS. i said “its still early” when others doubted a comeback. we stayed till the finish. we were up in the 755 club when brooks hit it and that place went nuts. everybody was giving others highfives it was awesome. i have have never been a part of something as great as that.

i was on a bus passing turner field and was looking at the braves score on espn.com on my phone. it was 9-6 bases loaded and then i looked at turner field and i saw fireworks going off. i figured they had won but i had to wait a few minutes before i realized it was a pinch hit walk off grand slam. Everyone on my bus started screaming when we found out the braves had won

They did have another excellent comeback against the Reds in the 90’s to answer the first post. I remember it vividly due to the fact my grandfather was rubbing it in my face that his team was beating mine. Was a great comeback both times.

it was Oct 1st, 1991, they faced Rob Dibble and were losing 6-0. Came back to win. It was during a critical point in the season too where the dodgers were right on their butt for the championship!!

Left the game after the 8th inning so we could head back to Mississippi. Listened on the radio and couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Nothing like driving down the road with your twin brother (Reds fan) in the car listening to the comeback.
