Pete Carroll to Seahawks?
RENTON, Wash.(AP) — The Seattle Seahawks fired Jim Mora after just one season, leaving the former NFC West champs without a coach, general manager and president less than four years after they appeared in the Super Bowl.
Speculation on Mora’s replacement immediately centered on Southern California coach Pete Carroll.
The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that Seahawks chief executive officer Tod Leiweke flew to California this week to interview Carroll for the job. ESPN.com, citing unidentified league sources, said an announcement of Carroll joining the Seahawks could come early next week.
“Pete’s name comes out at this time every year. In the past, he hasn’t commented on such reports,” USC spokesman Tim Tessalone said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. “He was not expected in (Friday). … At this point, we have nothing to report.”
A Seahawks spokesman inside the team’s headquarters Friday refused to comment on Carroll and Carroll did not return a phone call left for him by The AP.

Nick Saban advises Kirby Smart
From UGA beat writer Tim Tucker’s blog:
“I’m always happy and interested for our coaches to be able to advance professionally, especially if it is a professional advancement in terms of a guy being a coordinator who can go be a head coach in a situation where he has a chance to be successful.
“I’m not pleased when guys make lateral moves because it’s a little bit human nature to think, like my dad used to say, the grass is always greener on top of the septic tank. You always think it’s better someplace else. You kind of let your ego get involved, and you make moves that you shouldn’t make and really aren’t in your best interests for a career standpoint. So I’m not happy when guys do that. But anybody on our staff who can move up, we would like to help them do that.”
– Nick Saban in Friday press conference.
Al Groh next DC at Georgia Tech?

Loading ...
Georgia Tech announced on Friday that defensive coordinato Dave Wommack will not return for the 2010 season. Coach Paul Johnson says he and Wommack “both agreed” a change was needed after Georgia Tech ranked 54th in the nation in total defense and 56th in scoring defense.
The AJC’s Jeff Schultz brought up former Virginia head coach Al Groh as a possible candidate.

So here it is, “Go Tech, to Hell with Georgia”, go Dawgs, to Hell with Tech”, “Go Gators”, “Roll Tide”, “War Damn Eagle”, “Rocky Top”, “the U”; we all love our teams, so let’s lighten up a little. “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Good night, gentlemen.

just a reminder to Kirby, while he may have a chance to turn the defense around, if he doesn’t, it’ll probably be the head coach that will be on the hot seat and he won’t have a job…….if he were my son, I would tell him to be patient ……..he’s probably going to get a huge raise at Bama, a chance for another year to establish himself and then the head jobs will come.

I completely agree with the decision to make a change……..let’s all hope GT finds a stellar person/coach to run the defensive side of the ball. This should be a desirable position for an established proven coach since the GT Football program is on the rise, GT has an excellent Atheletics Director, GT already has some talented players and there is a solid recruiting class in place (2010 class consists of players primarily on the defensive side of the ball) AND it seems like Coach Paul Johnson would prefer to let the DC run the defense as he sees fit as long as the defense performs well……………….I sincerely hope we land a GREAT coach for the defense!

Saban has caught wind that Smart wants to talk to UGA? This may have been from Kirby or some other source because the last place to address this topic is the media. When a coach addresses it in the media, this is a desperate attempt because they do not like a certain situation. If Saban was totally confident about Kirby staying at Alabama, this would have stayed out of the media and behind cloesed doors. If Texas Tech is not interested or does not make an offer to Smart, there is a shot that Kirby will be at UGA. I think Texas Tech will and should offer their job to Tubberville. Remember 2 years ago Tubberville pissed Muschamp off by forcing him to feel like he should stay at Auburn and not take the same job at Texas.

I hate to break it to UGA Nation, of which I am a member, but Smart is not coming to UGA. I was talking to someone on staff earlier today and Grantham has accepted the DC position and at Mark Richt’s suggestion has decided to hire Manny Diaz to coach LBs. Joe Tresey who just lost his job at USF is the likely choice at DB coach (I say likely because we have offered the job to Jerry Gray, but Redskins look like he will be only coach kept from former staff)… Mark feels good about essentially having 3 coaches with DC experience…We also have our eye on a special team coach, but they did not give me their name… I also have word that Mark Richt will take more of a roll in play calling again and that Bobo is being told to concentrate on QB development (which MR thinks is Bobo’s strength)… High likely hood that Garner is indeed moving on from UGA and that McClendon will become recruiting coordinator

Insider, we’ll see. Personally, I have no idea what will be done, but the important thing was to finally see the much needed change made. During the past three seasons, we’d see pass completions made on our D over and over where the safety and corner would be looking at each other where someone blew the coverage.
Getting a DC with years and years of NFL experience is fine with me. If Diaz is the LB coach, he has an abundance of talent to work with so if he’s the right man for the job, we will notice it quickly. I like the idea of a special teams coach. If we had decent KO returns/coverage, Richt could have been two to three games smarter this past season. The bowl game would have been a lot closer if A&M didn’t screw up on special teams….maybe Georgia did good things on special teams that night w/ some different coaching/schemes.
As for Richt getting more involved w/ play calling, that works for me.
The stat I’m going to look at next season will be scoring difference between halves. UGA outscored opponents in the first half by 80 points. They were outscored by 40 points for the second half. If the new staff and changes can drastically improve that, UGA will be in good shape. I’d also like to see something done about the S&C program, but the changes on D are a good start.

My choice as #1 would be Al Groh. One of better records as DC in the NFL. But is he hungry for work now that he has $4 million coming from his UVA contract buy out? That is the question.
I do not see Lance Thompson leaving UT but a promotion is a promotion.
But he is a quality coach with a background that would make a solid DC.
The guys at Tech who played for him speak highly of his leadership abilities.
Ted Roof would be a lateral move. Do not seeing it happening.
You might keep your eye on Buddy Green the DC at Navy. Proven record as a DC in the ACC and as a position coach in the SEC. Only question, why did he not come to Tech with Johnson?
As usual in these situations, it will probably be someone none of us has ever heard of previously. The Richt hire at UGA will probably be the same.

You leave out of this that Florida is in the market for a DC also. This will all effect Ga. more that Tech. They are all fishing from the same pond which is getting shallower. Florida will do something out of the box just like Tech, Georgia will keep going down some worn out check list and get picked off time and time again by competition that see the same prospective coach and can offer more security. If you are at Alabama and can see a bright future for your head coach why do you go to Georgia where no one wants to admit it but one more year like last year and Richt is in trouble and with him goes his assists.
Johnson fires DC at end of season, first good move. As we see Georgia has done nothing that couldn’t have waited until now. Johnson knows already who he wants to fill that position which is the only reason he would fire the existing situation, Richt has not got a clue still. This will be a 101 course in college football management. Watch it play out and also watch who Johnson picks. It won’t be some tired Gailey type that is just looking for a paycheck, it will be a Smart or a Muschamp type that has not been discovered yet and has something to prove. Johnson could get whomever he wants because he will be at Tech much longer than Richt no matter who he picks right or wrong, but he will pick right.
Last note, Navy won their bowl game playing a new kind of defense with just two men on the line as down lineman. Don’t think CPJ didn’t notice that. It shut down the big ten opponent Wisconsin and was the game changer. A brilliant counter to getting manhandled on the line like Georgia, Clemson and Iowa did to us. Johnson goes into a game out manned year in year out yet wins most of his games by offense. If he can figure out how to offset the defense which I got the feeling he has, watch out world, this is not basketball where one man can control the game, it is a team sport and Johnson is going to prove it.

not understanding the desire for Al Groh but both Jon Tenuta as well as George O’Leary worked well at GT before and would be great to have back..In fact, a dream team, CPJ and Tenuta

Saban leaves when he wins the NC. Now if USC ( the real USC not Carolina ) needs a name coach and that does not include Blame Kiffen, who has no name recognition and is not a real coach, might go after Nick Saban.
You heard it here first. ONLY A USC ( the real USC ) could $$$$ afford Nick now, That is unless Saudia Arabia ia planning on fielding an NCAA team. HAHAHAHAHA
Blame will be bolting from UT for another major school or he will leave per scandal, as that is BUILDING FAST.
go Dogs.

Al Groh would get something like $4 million a year to sit at home next year. Why would he take a demotion and lose all that money?

You guys are right, it’s now clear how to beat Tech’s offense. All you need is bigger, faster players, a good DC and a month to prepare. ROFLMAO.

I can’t for the life of me understand why Smart would want to leave the NC’s to coach at UGA. He is safe in the arms of Bamma. He knows that if he comes to Ga., and it goes sideways, they will banish him. Then there is no going home after that. What a bone head play that would be. Remember that show GET SMART? What a dummy he was, and maybe this guy is too. No QB, No DC, and the whole ncaa looks at us and writes us off for next year. oh well. ..at least I got me a cool new Bamma Cap and Jacket. How many of you guys got the same. looks like it will be a while before the Dawg Nation regroups. GO DAW…..I mean ROLL TIDE !!!

gcs- Groh gets to keep the money he’s getting from UVa. They just won’t have to pay him as much. If he’s owed 4 million he will get what Gt would pay him (maybe @300K or so) subtracted from what Uva owes him. Either way- he’d make 4 million. Also- 80 percent of the posts on here are asinine. I would call it little brother syndrome but Alabama’s not in your state or division! Wow- show some love people- wouldn’t you rather it be Alabama #1 than Uf or Ut?

The only reason Smart would stay at Bama is if he has doubts to his abilities to be a DC on his own or aa a head coach. If he is as good as billed then he should come to UGA as DC for a few years. When Richt retires he steps in as HC if he has done his job well. It would be his defense and his program. No reason he couldn’t be successful at UGA. Here just as well as anywhere else.
