How would you rate Georgia’s football helmets?

The Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday wore black helmets for the first time in their history. They were in sharp contrast to the Vince Dooley inspired red helmets the team has worn since 1964. How did the look compare with other past Bulldog hats?

From 1952 to 1963 the Bulldogs wore silver helmets, which like is predecessors featured numbers on the neck line. (NCAA)

It would look good with an all black uni

doesn’t look as good with the white jersey. Might look good with home jerseys (red) and black pants as well.

nope. the red facemask is overkill. that helmet belongs nowhere but a trash bin. Also, I know AJC doesnt pay attention at all, but Georgia had a silver helmet with a block red G up until the 60’s. Also, they wore the red helmet with the white facemask and black and white stripe during the Quincy Carter-Champ Baily era.

the uniforms on Saturday would have been fine with the red helmets; those black pants are awesome!

maybe CMR should stop worrying about what gimmicky uniform change hes gonna make and maybe gameplan for a game…b/c I’m pretty sure we surrender 40 in every big game we play.

The red hats are UGA. Anything else is sacreligious. I hope I never see those black helmets again. Stupid move.

When UGA plays good football, no one cares about the helmets – however, I’m beginning to wonder if we are trying to become the Oregon of the SEC

maybe ga should paint their helmets yellow with green accents…maybe then that would intimidate someone…the black helmets are a joke, just like the pups.

The Black Jerseys in 2007 and 2008 were fine. The Black Helmets and Black Pants are not.

We should never mess with the Red Helmet.

Also, the Silver Britches are like Georgia’s trademark. Why would we change that?

Grambling State just called. They want their helmets back.

And one more thing…

When Mark Richt arrived at Georgia, the first thing that he did was to remove the black stripe from the helmet. At the time he said that he wanted the helmet to be “traditional Georgia”.

I think if they had won 41-17 instead of losing, people wouldn’t be making a big deal. I thought it would have looked better if they had the Red jerseys on. I would love to see them in Red pants(Herschel days) Black jerseys and Red helmet. How could that not look good?? Just my 2 cents.

Tennessee won their games and I heard a lot of griping about their black jerseys… I thought the black helmets were ugly enough to be hated on despite the outcome.

I am a traditionalist and like the red helments. The one with the black stripe (Donnan years) didn’t look all that bad but I just like our traditional look best. I don’t dislike the black except it would have looked better with a white or black facemask. Just leave the uniforms alone and stop with the gimmicks. There is a problem with motivation if it takes uniform changes to “try” and make you play better.

Georgia needs to scrap the silver pants on the road and go back to the red ones Hershel wore when he ran over Bill Bates. Black football pants have always been ugly as hell. Never saw a pair I liked. The helmet they wore yesterday could use a red stripe to go with the white one,

CMR is the smartest man alive. He knew something like black helmets would divert at least some of the postgame talk after the expected beatdown the doggies were gonna get from the gators. Now, part of the conversation at least revolves around a silly helmet controversy and not so much on a team that sucks eggs……….

The dawgs are fortunate to have established a standard/tradition in their uniforms. They need to quit dicking around with it and play football. Let Vandy, Kentucky, Miss State and all the other lame-o programs use costume tricks to motivate the team.

The black hats were insanely stupid.

The helmet doesn’t matter that much, it is the team that wears them that matters most and Richt put an inferior team on the field Saturday.

I like the old traditional Dooley-style red helmets the best. An occasional change-up would be okay of our team can back it up.

I’d almost say take the G off the helmet all together until they earn the right to wear it!

The black helmet belongs at Grambling, not UGA. Grambling has had this look for years. CMR needs to stop tinkering with the uniforms and concentrate on developing talent.

I like to remind everyone here that our school colors are red and BLACK not silver. I know the discussion is about the helmets not the pants but I liked them. Our helmets changes from silver to red with the “G” in 1964 I don’t hear anyone complaining about it now. Unless we go back to the uniforms from 1892 no one can say that any one uniform is the one that is truly “UGA”. I remember when the Gators wore orange jersey’s and Kerwin Bell was getting his but kicked by the Dawgs every year. No one at UF is complaining about the blue jerseys or paints now…Why because they are winning. Kids today are different. Doing something like that appeals to our current teams generation and future recruits. They like the idea of being “stylish”. One other point by making a big deal about the uniforms people are distracting discussion from the REAL PROBLEM which is how we played and have been playing. UGA has played football since 1892 uniforms are going to change so people get over it, every school does it occasionally. Lets talk about why our defense has givin up 37+ points in 9 of 17 games and it wasn’t because of the color of our helmets!!!

Personally I wish they would just go back to the silver britches the rest of the year.

I just don’t care about the helmets. I don’t care right now if we win or lose. (ok I do but it isn’t my primary concern). My main concern is that we see 110 % effort and don’t embarrass us with sportsman type penalties and trash talking.

The problem is that you can’t do this sort of thing EVERY YEAR and somehow make it special. Compound that with the fact that if you lose, you look foolish. This type of stuff should stop and not happen again for at least a decade. Getting to put on those red helmets is a privelage not a right.

It’s not fair to the Cincinnati Bearcats that we wore the black helmets. They are a quality football team, and now somebody might mistake our highlights of this game for theirs since the uniform is so similar. Just not fair to the Bearcats…

I read before the LSU game where CMR thought it wouldn’t be a good idea to wear black jerseys or helmets, which reading between then lines told me they had black helmets. It also gave me the thought that he might give in & let the players wear a “total blackout” uni. Then during the bye week on Bulldogs Gameday they asked the players about uni changes they’d like to see, 3 out of 4 mentioned black pants. Hearing that was not a shocker to me but didn’t pick up on it being a hint of things to come. Even though those seeds had been planted I never thought UGA would not wear Silver Britches under CMR! So I was SHOCKED when I saw them come out in Black pants topped off with Black Helmets! Then I immediately said “they’d better back it up”! Meaning while I like the alternate look if you don’t win wearing them then it looks like a cheap Gimmick.

Going forward my thoughts are: At home we keep the traditional look (red helmets & Silver Britches) with an occasional blackout jersey for BIG games. On the road we should mix in white, red & black pants. We shouldn’t wear all those in the same season but occasionally mix in alternate pants on the road. As far as the black helmets go I’m not sure how we should mix those in. I think at this point CMR should set team goals & if the team meets them then they can wear a special look for a big game. For example if the guys want to do a total blackout next season they need to decide on a game then they have to achieved a certain record & team goals in order to EARN the right to ware it! Otherwise any uni changes or additions need to be publicly announced before the season.

If the Dawgs played NAKED they would have won! Uniform changes are about as motivational as what? Dumb ain’t the word. If that’s what we need to do to get our team fired up we need to move down to Jr High football. Good Grief just play respectable ball please!
