it is basically same as last week–Great offense–lots and lots of penalties, turnovers, and what is up with the defense–for 3 and half quarters we gave up the long ball–i guess I should be happy they cut down on the short pass. We had another qb put up out of this world numbers. Great punt by Butler. We got to fix mental errors(penalties) and defense( Willie your time is running out). We did show great heart!!!!

To the Joe Cox haters out there. It’s time to eat a little crow. In fact, if you have any class at all, you should write the kid a letter of apology. I’ll even do it for you. All you have to do is cut and paste. That’s 2… 8 to go….

Dear Joe,

I am writing to apologize for all of the vile things that I have posted about you since the Oklahoma State game. It turns out that you are are a much better QB than I thought. Your game management against Arkansas was superb. In fact, you put on a clinic out there tonight. The touch you showed was first rate and you have a lot more zip on the ball when needed than I gave you credit for.

Thank you for sticking with the Dawgs and not transferring. I promise that I’ll keep my “never played football in my life” mouth shut and will root hard for you that rest of the season.

Kindest regards,

Your new biggest fan

P.S. Stay healthy…

Do you realize Mark Richt has never fired a coach since he arrived in Athens!!! As far as Joe Cox I was skeptical and questioning his skills earlier in the year however I believe he is the guy…in fact I will go one step further Matthew Stafford never had a game that good during the year versus good or bad teams Cox has better touch and accuracy maybe not better arm strength but that is overrated…and Drew Butler wow what a friggin punter…….Maybe we can hope and Pray that Mark fired you know who and if you dont know then Willie M and on the way out please take Jon Fabris with you……Exciting game to watch even if our defense looked like the sinkhole in Gwinnett County over the weekend….

Long game , lots of penalties on both sides. The long pass domimated the game. Ga. ran the ball with some efffect, while Ark. could not.
Cox showed he can manage the team and the game, fans need to leave him alone. Just slow up the infermal penalties and play more solid defense.

Our linebackers are great against the run, and seem clueless against the pass. Rennie goes after a runner with strength and determination, and rarely misses his man. Against the pass, however, Rennie seems to be a couple of steps behind, or confused, or out of position. Put a receiver in his neighborhood, and that pass is complete most of the time. Sad, since Rennie is one smart cookie, to me, he’s probably not being coached to make the play.

Give Willie a break, Ark. receivers made some outstanding circus catches, with defenders all on them. Great redzone “D”, superb offensive showing, great use of the receivers. Too many penalties and turnovers. Kudos to Cox, Moore, Green, and Butler.

Offense looked great, but that was expected against Arkansas’ horrendous defense. The defense was pretty helpless. The pass rush was nonexistent. Getting back the much-vaunted Justin Houston made no difference. The LB’s played alright, but the underneath stuff was still wide open, thanks to the baby-butt soft zone that Willie likes. The secondary was just glaringly bad. How bad? Bryan Evans is making me wish we had Terreal Bierria back, and that’s bad. Boykin again looked pretty solid on kickoff returns, but his coverage in the secondary was atrocious. Branden Smith got burned pretty bad a couple of times, showing that he’s still very wet behind the ears. I hope Cuff isn’t out for the season, but given our track record with knee injuries, let’s just say that sprains are rare.

At what point do the Willie bashers start to blame the players. There were some out of position and confused players, but for the most part the “D” hunkered. 77 yds on the ground and 3 of 14 3rd down conversion bt the opposition was an overall good performance .

We basically have the same def players back from last year but this edition plays like they’re HS’ers. Esp the secondary play. Awful. How the ARK receivers got that open is beyond belief. I don’t know who is to blame the coaches or the players. Give ARK credit they can pass and catch as good as any team in the country. Had they a Def it would probably been a different outcome. Praise the Offense and Joe Cox. For a few mistakes and a few bad calls they played great. That TD the Def called back was BS. The receiver clearly had posession and Jones’hit knocked it out. GA got screwed on that call.

Lap these wins up while you can because the way the def is playing I doubt seriously if GA can sustain itself by out scoring the upcoming competition but for a few out there. Thank you, Joe, Green and Off line.

Its not the players fault if we never play Man Defense onlt the Soft Zone. Were giving uo 400 yds passing anyway…take a chance. How about blitzing a safety or maybe even a corner. I played ball if players are continually making the same mistake then the problem is coaching. If they can’t be coached, get someone else out there.

Yes the defense gave up some BIG plays, but these turnovers are going to catch up with us one of these games(besides OSU). The next couple of games will show us how good we are. That is only if we don’t spot each team 10-17 points. Take away what the offense gave them, and the defense wasn’t to bad.

Mark Richt fired his running backs coach Tony Pierce after his first season for an unspecified conduct incident. I’ll bet he parts ways with Martinez at the end of this season. He can’t afford to keep him around any longer…he’s hurting the program. His defense didn’t know what they were doing the whole first half tonight.

Great performance by Cox. Defense is not good enough to compete with a ranked team. It will be their down fall this season and will come back to prove that this team is not complete. Willie Martinez is not the answer to a national championship team.

UGA won the game, but that was the ugliest win I’ve ever seen. Cox did fine and should get more respect, but this team is poorly coached on both sides of the ball. And it’s so sad when neither team can field a defense…. If Richt doesn’t fire both the OC and DC after this many years of failed teams with all the talent he recruits, he shouldn’t be a head coach.

Actually, the Tenn/FL game was quite interesting. UGA needs to watch out for Tenn. Their defense will kill UGA if they play like they did against UF. And their offense will be able to score at will. Oh, sorry, every team will be able to score at will against UGA this year. Good luck staying in the top 25.

I don’t like jumping on bandwagons, but the UGA defense let a guy playing in his first SEC game throw for a school record 5 touchdowns against them. Granted, Mallett is a great player. Granted, Petrino is a great coach. I’ve seen better players play against Georgia, and I’ve watched us play against better coaches. That being said, I’ve witnessed some pretty horrible games played by our defense (i.e. the Sugar Bowl in 05 against WVU), but never have I seen a defense that looked so lost throughout the entire game as ours did tonight. If it weren’t for a couple of miscues late in the game, Arkansas could have easily won. We have some of the most talented football players in the country, it would sure be nice if we had a coaching staff capable of taking full advantage of their talent…

And by the way, before you make the typical excuses (turnovers, short fields, etc.) good defenses are good because they find ways to be effective in spite of the situation. I have yet to see a Willie Martinez led defense make any sort of adjustment to improve their chances against their opposition. Beyond that, I have yet to see a Willie Martinez led defense take a stand and come out on top without a whole lot of luck on their side. So there you go, I am officially on the bandwagon…

FIRE WILLIE MARTINEZ NOW!!!!

Penalties over and over and over, Jones posing and dancing while the play is still going on, holes EVERYWHERE, special teams continue to run into each other like they are drunk and 3 more turnovers.

Rennie is great.

Butler could kick it out of the stadium.

Same ole undisciplined football – - penalties, turnovers and missed tackles – thats on Richt.

I will start to blame the players when it’s the players fault! The horrible play of the defense had nothing to do with the players, it once again had to do with a DC who cannot readjust plays in order to keep up with the other team’s offense–plain and simple. How many times did ARK throw that pass to the WR for about 20 yards, and every time he was standing alone, with no one even close to him??? That’s Martinez’s fault, not our guys.

Mickey C.

September 20th, 2009

So let’s recap the ‘Good’: 52 points scored – Good! A Georgia SEC road win – Good! OK now the ‘Very Bad’: Over 40 points allowed for the second consecutive week – Very Bad! Numerous turnovers – Very Bad! Drive killing/harmful penalties – Very Bad!

It seems to me that Coach Mark Richt needs to overhaul his coaching staff. Maybe not so much with the coaches on the offensive side of the ball, but certainly on defensive staff starting with the defensive coordinator Willie Martinez. In fact, Willie Martinez and most of the defensive staff must be upgraded if Georgia wants to compete competitively in the SEC and nationally. Willie Martinez should have been replaced at the end of last season, but soft hearted Mark Richt stuck with him. But now the performance of the defense is a huge liability. You can’t count on your offense to score 52 points for you each week.

Coach Richt I just ask you to take a honest look at last season and this seasons defense and ask yourself – do I like the results from our defense? Coach Richt you are a very good head coach right now, but if you want to be a great/historic head coach you need to make the hard decisions and do what is best for the entire football team – and that is to fire Willie Martinez.

Consider that you have had several top 10 recruiting classes with some of the nation’s best defensive players and you can’t get any better effort from you defense. Coach Richt you have a big problem on defense and if you don’t fix it, you yourself is a part of the problem. Take a look at your players on defense, you have some very good players on defense and Coach Richt you owe it to them to provide them the best coaching. Willie Martinez is not getting the job done for you – plain and simple. I know Willie Martinez is a friend of Coach Richt but this friendship is clouding his judgment.

The Great College Head Football Coaches have made the hard choices in upgrading their coaching staff when needed and have gone on to become legendary. Coach Richt I am telling you now that if you don’t replace Willie Martinez, top defensive recruits will be reluctant to sign with Georgia – which hurts the entire program. So do your career a favor, do your team a favor and do the Georgia fans a favor and – FIRE WILLIE MARTINEZ ALREADY!!!

P.S. If Mark Richt won’t replace Willie Martinez, then I ask the UGA Athletics Director to pressure Coach Richt into making a change of defensive coordinator.

Have to agree w/Wow’s post. I can’t see how some of these def players were ranked so high coming out of HS, esp the CB’s. Does Martinez’s coaching make them look bad? I’m at a loss. The only way to find out is change players or change coaches. Fabris is a joke. Two KO’s out of bounds and a pooch kick near the end of the game! WM defenses have not improved over the years. Samual should try duct taping the ball to his hands. Yes, they won and for that we’re all very greatful thanks to Joe and his receivers and Samuals run which he didn’t fumble, thank God. But the penalties, TO’s, poor def play, and coaching continually has this team taking one step forward and two steps back.

Anyone know what Tommy Tuberville is doing right now? How much is UT paying it’s assistants right now? almost $4M? Coach…any reasonable person knows you have to wait until the end of the season to complete a fair evaluation, but the body’s dead…time to bury it. How long must the wake/wait be? Do WM a favor, find him a job at Little Sisters of the Poor Junior College and let him go. If you’re buddy Tommy won’t come, get van Gorder back. He’s not That far down the road and would probably welcome the chance to return.

I am happy to eat much crow about Joe Cox , as he has certainly shined after a game or two under his belt. Great job son in proving us doubters wrong. How CMR could ever justify keeping WM and the even worse Fabris after this season will bear watching. We play a soft zone w/ 4 & 5 star recruits who let receivers get behind them on almost every play. And the continued lack of discipline resulting in excessive penalties is a direct reflection of our suspect coaching staff. This team has heart and fight- which we shloud all admire. Unfortunately , this gets you W’s over average teams and nothing more. Nothing short of a complete turnaround by our pathetic D will keep us from 8-4 or worse.

Sad Dawg,

You ask who I am (Mickey C.), well I am a person who looks at facts and results. ‘Sad Dawg’ you are a blind fool if you think Georgia’s bad play on defense is not due to Willie Martinez. Just look at the facts, last season Georgia was the preseason #1 and they lost every big game (badly I might add), because of penalties and bad defense.

Georgia has highly ranked recruits on defense and with better coaching they could be a force. Other programs do much more with a lot less. Just look at schools like BYU, Utah, Boise State, etc. who do not have the high recruits like Georgia. Just look last year under Martinez, Georgia gave up 40+ to Alabama, Florida and Georgia Tech. Additionally, the Willie Martinez defense gave up 35+ points four times last year and already 35+ points in 2 of the first 3 games this year.

So don’t tell me about their youth on defense. I just see the facts that they are not getting the job done on defense and with the players they already have they could do much better – if they had a better defensive coordinator.

So ‘Sad Dawg’ the next time you come at me with your girly-emotional tantrums, have your facts straight. And just read the other posts to see that most agree that Willie Martinez needs to go.

I hate to say this, but with our lackluster defense we will lose to LSU, Tennessee, Florida and Georgia Tech. We may luck up and win one of those games, but we’ll only even it out by losing to Auburn or Kentucky. This team, with this defense, will lose a minimum of four games this year, and that is probably an optimistic assessment. I love what CMR has done for our program. His win/loss record really speaks for itself. Think how much better it would be were it not for the shameful decline our defense has had over the past five years. We have gotten worse every year, and this year we have gotten worse every game. 24, 37, 41… at this pace LSU is going to hang 50+ on us and we’re going to look very bad in the process. I honestly fail to understand how Martinez still has a job. I’m not necessarily advocating that he be fired mid-season, but what can be done to change the end result we’re getting from his defense?

DawgGrad94

September 20th, 2009
10:23 am

Doing the research now… but I believe that the defense has given up more points to our opponents now in the three years since WM has been our DC than in the previous 10 years of Georgia Football. If we would simply play man defense, mix up our schemes and blitz every 3-4 downs, we might not be so predictable and allow these mediocre quarterbacks to have stellar games against us. Come on CMR! We understand loyalty and appreciate it – but there comes a time when the offense won’t be able to keep up with the lack of defense. The “bend don’t break” defense doesn’t have a place in the SEC and neither does Coach Martinez, unless we are content with 2nd place in the East every year.

I gave up after the 3rd qtr, and went to the radio. So many penalties. So many hogs receivers running free. I am happy however, that Tavarres King got to play. The first 2 passes to him were thrown out of bounds giving him no chance, but sooner or later a good pass was thrown and he did his thing. The defenders basically gave up as they could not catch him. Why has he been overlooked so long!!!???????
Same complaints. Why, why, why can’t offensive linemen remember the danm snap count. They look like absolute dunderheads moving early.
And, on a punt, how is it possible to have an illegal formation? If it is possible to draw a penalty, our guys will find it.
One last note, does anyone know what the Hog did to get kicked out? Did he throw a punch?
Btw, the hog coach Petrino is a complete !@#$%^&, well, its Sunday, but you can fill in the blank.
CMR, you are late, and you may be next in line after CWM. CMR, you look like you’d rather be someplace else than on the dawg sidelines. Why don’t you take your loot and take a long vacation.
Dawgs, you showed a lot of heart, energy, and put out a lot of effort. Rub against the coaches and see if some of it rubs off on them.

CMR should look at recent Dawg history understand that the demise of Jim Donnan was his inability to find a suitable DC. (among other things).

It is my hope that CMR is currently at least thinking about searching the country for a good defensive coordinator to replace CWM at the end of this season.

This team reminds me of the Cardiac Dawgs of the ‘78 season……..but they had a HOF DC in the name of the greatest ever…Erk Russell. May he RIP

Come to think of it, maybe CWM should head butt his players…might knock some sense into him.

Support your team and coaches during the season. During the off season, air your complaints. The Dawgs played well enough too win yesterday; be happy with that. Imagine how you would feel if it was a lost instead of a win.

First, what a great game for the offense!! So happy for Joe Cox, Richard Samuel, Orson Charles, etc.
I agree that Martinez and Fabris need to go. It’s time to say goodbye because clearly no coaching is going on. NO readjustments are made by WM.

I didn’t know much about Mallett before the game, but I know now from watching him that he is a huge whiner, just like his coach!!! What a freakin baby.

How many noticed that the broadcasters were calling Arkansas offensive plays better than Georgia’s defense were? When ARK went for two, did you see how many of their receivers were wide open? GA was sold out to the run completely. I never even played HS football and saw that one. YIKES!!!

This win is very important, as the Music City and the Weedeater make their selections to match UGA with a Minnesota or Iowa. We are in the lower levels now in the SEC. Our D is non existant and we look like one of those Big Sky Conference teams that win 54-49 games and end up in the Emerald Bowl in San Fran.

We will have yet another wild one with Arizona State ( 44-32 ) and then, we lose to NEW STAFF at UT and to LSU. We will look very bad vs both SE C schools and the UGA Offense will score on average with these two SEC legit teams about 20 points. We will fumble and toss pics and that #14 with UT will badly hurt UGA when he returns a couple, I am afraid.

CMR …………….make the Head D Coach change now. Find a DE coach that has the correct D vision in his mind, then allow him to recruit those players. Name one successful UGA D player that CWM has recruited. Name one?? Not. This can not continue and I am now convinced that the EXECS of the UGA Athletics Dept or Adm. will MAKE Richt fire Wille Martinez now. Why continue with him any longer/ This has become UGA D and it stinks.

7-5 to 6-6 year gang.

David Pollack was pretty good wasn’t he?
it’s not the players; it’s willie. just imagine will muschamp(a former player) at D coordinator. We have the players we just need the swarm back.

On cox, good game but I believe any of our QB’s could throw at WR’s 5 yards behind the DB’s or just force it to Green. After all it’s Arkansas Defense….. Make since?

Same ole mess! showed great heart in coming back, Cox was great, but the defense sucked, AGAIN! Willie Martinez should have been gone long ago and so should Fabris because the Dawgs havent had a pass rusher since Quinton Moses and Charles Johnson left. We will never reach our goals until Richt makes some coaching corrections. I don’t know how good S.C. and Ark’s offenses really are but I do know UF has a good one. We could be in for a long season with this defense, we won’t out score everyone.

Pickle,
I could care less about “Arkansas” Defense.
What I care about is seeing on about 5 times Willie throw up his hands on the sidelines when our players didn’t do what they were supposed to; perhaps you saw the same thing.
What do you think these kids are thinking when they see their Head D coach throwing up his hands in disgust. it isn’t positive and it isn’t a form of coaching. it makes you feel lost and unsure going forward; much less that your coach is giving up on you.
Pull them a side and coach them up positively, support them and show some confidence yourself.
As a manager CMR, I know your seeing this. now ask yourself what your boss would say at evaluation time??

Was Rennie Curran playing last night? He IS the #1 STUD on D and I heard his name called maybe twice the whole game. Not picking on him, but I am complaining about why he wasn’t put into position to be the monster he is.

There are 2 cold facts(Just the facts , mamm; as Joe Friday was famous for saying) regarding the G-dogs.One is 78 points allowed from non-ranked opponents. Two is no offensive production against a ranked opponent. High profile SEC teams will take note of these facts and set up a game plan on these issues.

There is no way UGA can keep winning, playing like this. Don’t get me wrong, the game itself was very entertaining as was USCe last week. ARK will be a threat to other SAEC teams all season. Mallet is true. As foir UGA, the combination of the TOs on the short field with our veru suspect pass defense…. We can’t keep playing like this. It will catch up to us sooner rather later. Is it me or are the Frosh playing better than the veterans in the early going? I am guessing that this will be how UGA’s games play out this season.

I am a DAWG fan. But I am also a Realist…. The fact that the DAWGS got by this Arkansas Razorback Team doesn’t surprise me. They both (The DAWGS & Razorbacks) look very terrible on defense. I will give the offense on both teams some KUDOS. How do you really measure up the offense when they are playing against a defense that really sucks? (BOTH TEAMS)

Honestly, I am not convinced that the DAWGS are man enough to play up to the Teams like LSU, Tennessee, and Florida this year. Sports Writers have Georgia 8-4 at best. Maybe 7-5 this year. If this is true ( in which I see that it maybe headed that way) then it is very sad…. That would be very unfortunate for a standard of Coach Mark Ricth, and for the Real Georgia Fans.

Someone commented last year that Defensive Coordinator, and Secondary Coach Martinez should have been fired last year, and Coach Ricth disagreed. But Coach Ricth need to re-visit his thoughts, and take another look at him. This is by far the worse defense I have ever seen that DAWGS display.
They weren’t only bad yesterday against Arkansas, but they were terrible against South Carolina, and South Carolina statistically out played Georgia.

If Georgia expects to have a successful season this year, they had better cut down on the penalties, ( False Starts, Personal Fouls, Pass interference, Holding etc.) and the Defense had better step up their game. If not, the Dawgs could kiss this 2009 season goodbye. They will be lucky to go to the Blue Bonnet Bowl (If they still have that Bowl).

I find it hard to believe that the majority of the personal foul penalties on Vetreans. This fact is sad, because it shows we have no leadership, still. Michael Moore had a good game last night, but CMR should have put his ass on the bench after the PF he picked up. To all the die hard DAWGS in here that have alot of confidence in CMR, and this team… How do see UGA fairing against the likes of UF, LSU, UT, and even Tech? With the constant shooting of ourselves in the foot. Time and again. I am not being sarcastic, or anything. I want to know how we can expect to compete with discplined teams, if we don’t get alot of this senselessness (Penalties, TO, No QB pressure, Lack of pass defense, lack of forced TOs)dealt with and straightened out. It would be one thing if we only had on e problem, but as you can see, we have alot of problems; in all 3 facets of the team.

Take away the first two turnovers, like last week, and that changes things for the defense. Somewhat.

robert, while I agree, the Defense needs to force a stop every once in a while.
The #1 problem with the defense is that the players are not discplined in their play. They are constantly caught out of position.

On another note, Reshad Jones was bringing the lumber SAT night. I was surprised he was not called for a PF. He is good for one a game, whether he deserves it or not.

After every game, after all the players are on the buses and the coaches are taking their seats, Willie Martinez walks by Richt and SCENE:

Willie: [chuckling and looking for a high five] “Man, a win is a win…right?”
Mark: [reluctantly giving him a high five] “Yeah, I guess so. Don’t worry Willie, I’m not going to fire you yet. If I fired you, I would look mean and unethical.”
Willie: [relieved] “Thank you so much. I promise next week we will deliver on defense.”
Mark: [shaking his head and laughing] “No you won’t. You are a really bad coach.”

Joe Cox has shown why the players and coaches had faith in him. The receivers are getting better every week. The defense is tough against the run. Samuel and King should be a good duo at running back. Now if we can only come up with a defense to stop the pass. I agree we need to free Willie (it sounds better than fire Willie). Don’t know if we could get Will Muschamp, he’s supposed to be the heir apparent at Texas but it doesn’t hurt to ask if he wants to come home to Georgia

Offense-A 52 points against an sec opponent. 5 TD passes. 2 turnovers kept it from being an A+
Defense-D- 41 points-played some d at the very end of the game and winning keeps it from being a F.
Special Teams-B-Punting was awesome (Butler’s punt maybe saved the game for us) but the fumbled punt brings you down
Coaching-C-Bobo was not scared to go after it. I don’t think we win this game if we play conservative. Martinez continues to have people that are out of position. Too many wide open recievers. I’m not mad at the bombs where someone is on there back and arkansas makes perfect throw but it makes me mad when there is nobody within 20 yards and when they do get there they miss a tackle
Excitement-A+++-This game had me on the edge of my seat
