Are UGA fans happy with Mark Fox?

Georgia hired a new basketball coach Thursday.
It wasn’t Clemson’s Oliver Purnell or Miami’s Frank Haith, or even Bobby Knight.
Instead, the Bulldogs’ new coach is Nevada’s Mark Fox.

Was this the splash you were hoping for?

Fox, 40, has had success. He took over at Nevada in 2004, after current LSU coach Trent Johnson left to take over at Stanford. He led the Wolf Pack to three NCAA tournaments, the last in 2007, and advanced to the second round twice.
But, with Missouri’s Mike Anderson and Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel being mentioned as early top candidates, Fox is a surprise.
So, what do you think of UGA’s move? Would you have been happier with Purnell or Heath?

Look we needed an african american to coach the Ga.Dawgs…this guy may be good..but he can’t land the big guys leaving the area…Evans…got caught with his pants down so to speak…the coaches that he could have gotten were scoop up…Kentucky..took one day to get the man…these guys are going to be unreal…Alabama…got a good man while..Evans was sleeping at the wheel…what is wrong with him…I think Georgia Basketball is gone..we may win a few Div II games mabybe…what’s wrong with Adams and Evans…we had our pick and ended up taking what was cheap….

we don’t know much about him. seems like he has a good record – 80 games over 500; but a good look at that record doesn’t show many significant wins over BCS Conference schools. i like it better than purnell or heath, though. i am anxious to find out more about him. no way they gave him $2 million/year though.

It’s not the splash candidate that Damon Evans said we’d get, but he looks to be good coach. He’s going to have to be great coach to be successful in the SEC East. I hope he does great job.

Sure. Beats the heck out of Haith and Purnell. Fox has 2X the number of NCAA victories than those guys.

1 of two things wiill happen. He will use us as a stepping stone to somewhere better like tubby. Or he will fail like felton, jirsa, harrick, and many more and be out in 4-6 years. And we will hire some other coach from a mid-level school and do this again. I do agree Kirk. Terrence will write an article tommorow about how UGA is racist and they need a black coach….blah,blah,blah.

UGA fans, this is a GREAT hire. If you know anything about basketball (and honestly, not alot of UGA fans do, no offense..the good bball fans you have a great…), then you would know what a quality coach this guy is. He was great getting kids to RENO, NV. Think he can’t lock down metro ATL? Wake up. Great hire Evans! SEC East now has the best collection of coaches in the nation!

Jeff Capel must be laughing all the way to the bank. I don”t like the hire but he is better than Bobby Knight. At least he won’t have high expections. GOOD LUCK MARK FOX, YOU”RE GONNA NEED IT.

Felton beat your man 2 out of 3 with much less talent. Fox will do even better as his X’s and O’s

Well either this guy can coach or can recruit, he’s put 4 players in the NBA during his time in Nevada. That has to count for something.

The guy can coach and can recruit. I did kind of want a black coach that can relate to the kids from Atlanta (i.e. Anthony Grant). But, he got JaVell McGee to come to Nevada. McGee was a McDonald’s All-American and all of the big schools were after him. He may have benefited from some of the success Trent Johnson created, but he sustained it. Sometimes the sexy hire isn’t always the right hire (i.e. Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith). I am interested to see what he can do. Best thing is it isn’t Purnell or Frank Haith.

Does anyone know what type of offense he ran at Nevada??? Also he did have some quality wins… I believe he beat Grant at VCU this year.. and saw he beat Kansas at Lawrence in 06-07 season…

This is a very big surprise, but this guy can coach. AND, he has proven that he can get recruit by getting the #8 player in the country last year to Nevada:

http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=9&c=8&cfg=bb&toinid=644&yr=2008

He coached under Trent Johnson (LSU, Stanford), and has won the WAC 4 times, and been 3 times to the NCAA tourney…

I was very disappointed last night since we had lost out on Anthony Grant and Mike Anderson, but i feel alot better tonight since we hired a young coach that has won, been to the NCAA’s, and works his tail off…

DE failed his first chance as a recruiter, probably why he is an AD not a coach, he had time, money and a great opportunity, how long will it take a third tier West Coast conference coast to get oriented to the South, the local talent and playing in a tough league, no not Big East, but coming from WAC? Hewitt can breath easy, his job is secure for a long time, I do not think my check book is at risk for additional donations to watch a FOX lead team, I’ll set the clock for thirty six months, care to staqrt a watch list, maybe we will have a new AD to recruit the next time. How hard is it to be AD to Dooley’s hires?

Jules Winnfield

There certainly is no “wow” factor. T. Moore should be AD. Tubby or Robinson would have been great. Would have even been excited about Bob Knight too….at least we’d get some national attention and win some games….then we could go out and try to get a big time coach without being laughed at when he retired. I didn’t even know who this guy was. There’s more written about me on wikipedia than him.

He didn’t put 4 guys in the NBA, most were already there when he started.

honestly, guys why would a high level coach go to UGA? Facilities are not the greatest, fans are perhaps the most apathetic in the SEC (close with Auburn), and Mark Richt is the star. Money can only do so much….This is a great hire. UGA will be in the tourney in 2 years. Mark it down!

hometown does not mean anything in recruiting now a days…

Look at the top 10 players this year:

7 of the top 10 players will or have verbally said they will go to a school away from their home town and home states..

http://rivalshoops.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=1642

You have to work your tail off to sign top players, and no top player will just go to a “local” school. I imagine Fox had to recruit Babbit hard and sell him on a winning program, not just that he was close to mom and dad.

You people posting on here have to be some of the most ignorant sports fans in the world. White coaches can recruit just as good as a black coach(i.e. every school that has a white coach such as Memphis, UNC, Duke, UConn, etc). This guy has won at Nevada. Why is that such a bad thing? Cut him some slack and let him work. And this is a HUGE victory for every person who has suffered through a TM column. That guy is an idiot and not worthy of his own sports column.

Facilities are fine… Our practice facility is extremely nice… Stegman could use some renovating…. but if we pack it… there will be no problem there… Actually, it all comes down to winning…. If we win, facilities will not really get noticed anymore
