Georgia congressmen on both sides of the aisle today comment on the Supreme Court’s decision Thursday to uphold President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, including its controversial linchpin — the individual mandate to buy insurance. Read what they have to say and comment below.
Health care ruling not a victory for America
By Tom Graves and Phil Gingrey
We all now know that the Supreme Court has ruled to uphold Obamacare. The majority of justices reasoned that Congress does have the power to impose the individual mandate because it has the power to tax, thereby upholding the law. But when President Barack Obama came to the American people to justify his health care agenda, his explanation was the exact opposite. He publicly stated many times that the individual mandate in his law would not be a tax.
As Justices Alito, Kennedy, Scalia and Thomas stated in their dissenting opinion, “…to say that the Individual Mandate merely imposes a tax is not to interpret the statute but to rewrite it. Judicial tax-writing is particularly troubling.” We could not agree more.
Warnings to watch for judicial activism in this ruling spread far and wide, yet few suspected the court would uphold Obamacare in this manner, given the president and congressional Democrats justified the law via the Commerce Clause and not through Congress’s tax-writing power. By doing so, the court’s ruling will impact Americans just as the president intended. Americans are now forced to purchase a product or pay a price. There is little difference, in practical terms, between the president deeming that price a penalty and the court deeming it a tax.
Simply put, this is un-American and is absolutely not a victory for patients, physicians or the American taxpayers. Patients don’t want it, our constituents don’t want it and Republicans’ next act will be to again attempt to rid the books of this law in its entirety.
While the court upheld the president’s health care law, it did not rule on its merits, which Americans overwhelmingly believe to be a disaster. The law accomplishes the exact opposite of everything the president promised. It raises taxes and premiums, encroaches upon citizens’ freedom of choice and results in less access to health care for seniors, children and the poor.
America’s taxpayers are also learning just how much of a fiscal nightmare Obamacare truly is. The president claims his law will boost our nation’s economic engine, small businesses. But the reality is that the employer mandate is one of the most “anti-growth” provisions our country has ever seen. Costs for businesses will balloon under Obamacare, forcing many companies to cut jobs to make up for the loss to their bottom lines.
And remember when the president said, “If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan.” The reality is that up to 20 million Americans stand to lose their employer-provided coverage under Obamacare, as reported by the Congressional Budget Office.
Patients must be able to make their own health choices, select their own health care providers, and make decisions with their loved ones and physicians. It’s what American families deserve — and it is the right thing to do. Repealing this law — once and for all — is now our only means to this end.

Verdict is a step forward and best is yet to come
By Hank Johnson and John Lewis
After more than a century of debate, President Barack Obama and Democrats in Congress won a historic victory with passage of the Affordable Care Act. Exorbitant health care costs prompted Democrats to take the lead and do what no other Congress has been able to do — put health insurance in reach for more than 50 million uninsured Americans and more affordable for everyone.
Rather than build on this major step forward, Republicans immediately mounted challenges aimed at repeal to put insurance companies back in charge. Minutes after the highest court in the land upheld the law, multimillion-dollar attack ads hit the airwaves. But don’t be fooled.
This decision, by the most conservative court in decades, affirms that the individual mandate does not represent government overreach or undue intervention, but is constitutionally permissible. This ruling is a tremendous victory for the American people who are already reaping its benefits.
Due to a pre-existing condition, small businesswoman Amy Morton and more than 2 million Georgians — including nearly a quarter of women in Georgia — were unable to buy health insurance at any price. They were considered “uninsurable” because they were sick. Now they have health care.
Marion Nurse of Atlanta, along with 3.6 million seniors and people with disabilities, have saved more than $3 billion on their prescription drugs. “Obamacare,” as opponents derisively call it, ensures Marion can afford her heart medication.
Joe Lowery of Clarkston can now keep his two adult children on his health plan. They are just starting out and cannot afford coverage on their own. Today, more than 3 million children nationwide are covered by their parent’s insurance because of this law.
Despite Thursday’s decision, Republicans remain curiously committed to repealing the law at any cost. The bogeymen of “government takeover” and “death panels” that come between patients and doctors are figments of the Republican scare machine. You can test this by asking Morton, Nurse and Lowery, your friends, neighbors and family who reap the benefits of the law. They describe even greater access to their doctors, not less because insurance companies can no longer deny them care they need.
And the best is yet to come. The full impact of the bill won’t even take effect until 2014, when 30 million more Americans will get tax credits to buy affordable health care for the first time.
People need to scrutinize the motives of Republicans determined to repeal progress that every president since Teddy Roosevelt has tried and failed to achieve. If the law is constitutional and it works, why not build on this success, instead of gunning to destroy it? This law bans insurers from charging women 150 percent for the same coverage as men. It lifts the lifetime limit on coverage for 105 million Americans. Why would anyone want to reverse that?
This bill’s opponents have publicly sworn to deny Obama any victory, even if it puts millions of Americans’ lives at risk. Don’t let a parade of false partisan ads and scare tactics cheat you out of what’s coming to you in 2014. Let your pocketbook and your experience be your guide. Tell the governor you want the state to expand Medicaid paid for by the federal government. And tell members of Congress you want to build on this progress, not tear it down.
Democrat Hank Johnson represents Georgia’s 4th Congressional District. Congressman John Lwis represents Georgia’s 5th Congressional District.

The Doctors are the ultimate judge of how good health care is. If they decide being a Dr. is not worth it with all the government regulations and go into some other field or decide to practise in a foreign country the the U.S. is stuck with an all comprehensive program with out the people to implement it.
I like that statement from John Roberts,” it is not our job to protect the people from the President that they themselves voted into office.”
The populace have a grand choice this election year, Mitt Romney has all the qualifications, “very qualified”. On day 1 of his presidency, “Obamacare” is on its way out.

Surely, Graves and Gingrey are smart enough to know that they are spouting nothing but lies and distortions. They deal in this and fear.

We need to provide better (not necessarilly more) health care. We need to control health care inflation. Will ACA do this? On the first point, most likely. On the second, unknown.
We need to create a true market for health care. Now, because of the link between insurance and employment, most consumers of health care are not payers for that good. That leads to overconsumption and allows providers to overcharge.
I have been self employed most of my life and am acutely aware of the cost health care coverage. I wish there were a way I could turn on the light bulb in the heads of all those who have no idea how close to disaster they are if they were to lose their insurance and need it. I consume little for two reasons: I am healthy, and it is expensive.
I think the first is a good reason. I hope we can do something about the second. But nothing we have tried yet has worked. Bottom line: What we have is not working.

The fact of the matter is that everyone already pays for people to visit the ER for free healthcare already, to the tune of $54 million dollars a year, possible more. That’s part of the reason premiums go up, because doctors can’t say no to treating them.
Is the law perfect? No. But to be honest, most of the law were Democrats and Republican ideas until the Tea Party hijacked the Republican party and made government intervention a bad word. Then Republicans basically ran away from it since they saw the witch hunt. If people want a better law, have Congres WORK TOGETHER.

Our Republican friends kept saying “repeal and replace.” But they have never given a coherent explanation of what they would do to replace Obamacare with something else that does not discriminate against people who through no fault of their own have preexisting conditions. Without legal protection, how are survivors of childhood cancer and people with chronic congenital ailments supposed to purchase health insurance?

SAWB @ 8:52 pm – For some reason T-SPLOST feels like a shotgun wedding. However, we have not fully comprehended that we are the bride. I do not ever remember being properly introduced to MR T-SPLOST. I always believe such a costly arrangement must have an extended courtship and more dates. I do not know not even know your sign! your favorite color, and what about your family? where do you LIVE?
All I see is politicians and business men standing all around me. You should know that makes me very nervous too! Before we enter into this strange marriage and as the BRIDE, there are few things that need to be clarified.
First of ALL you must give me more than (10) ten minutes! Look at all of the money that is being spent on this marriage. I checked with the “SLUT” section on the left and they tell me we are being HAD!………… AGAIN!
Normally, I do not pay them much attention, but being they spend more “QUALITY TIME, face -to face” with the politicians and business men than their wives and family. I thought IT would be wise to hear, what they have to say. They also tell me 10 ten minutes is all they get as well. The Sluts also tell me, never to trust any of them, first of ALL.
The other concern I have is about the CROOKS,THIEVES and the SCAMMERS? The sluts tell me, they too, are always around the politicians and business men. They are the ones in most cases provided the introduction to the politicians. Imagine that!
Surely you will provide some protection? Like ,stating what are the rules for family members and friends? are we going to let them come in and take what they want, whenever? These are a just a few things anyone considering MARRIAGE you should have answers for.
Maybe we may NEED TO DELAY this action until another time and day? What I really think is that we need to start over and DATE for a much longer period of time, just so that we can get to know each other better.
You know I have had other suitors that did not work out. Like MR. GA -400 toll – he turned out to be a LIAR! and most recently MR. HOV, is another one who expects me to pay him every time I drive to and from work.
So as you can see as to why I am a bit GUN shy! I will make a list of things I would like see done before Marriage. If you are patient with me I am sure something can be worked out. But right now…All I am doing is closing my eyes and I have (2) two
Aspirin between my knees as the politicians suggested. and on July 31 we will make a decision.

Congressman Johnson,
I was one of those “uninsurable” you speak of. The reasons the insurance companies gave were laughable. But what was not laughable is I am an old woman, not old enough to be on Medicare yet. The federal high risk pool made it possible for me to be insured, and to protect everything my husband and I built up together. I am most grateful to “ObamaCare”.
I am greatly disturb that Governor Deal plans to do nothing to set up the insurance health care exchanges, so that I and others may one day have a choice of private insurance companies, (until after the election per an AJC story today). Can you make him understand that everyday he sits on his hands he may cause the deaths of Georgians in the future?

I notice that the republicans take about the problems of the new confirmed healthcare law and it’s effects on small business and the democrats complain about the republicans using it for politics. I really think that the law will increase every tax payers costs and the democratic party does not want you to know it for as long as possible. My health insurance and others has gone up every year but the next renewal I wonder, it has been 6-8% higher every year so fat and if the republicans are correct, my employees with be paying the next increase 30-50%. This will either be correct and so sad that we were all lied to or my cost will go down. I sure hope the president was telling the truth abd it will go down.
One other point, illegal immigrants are still not covered and how does that take the Emergiency rooms costs? Or do they get health insurance and just not pay? If so I renounce my citizenship to get free healthcare that YOU are paying…
ps- thanks I’ll take two new kidneys and one liver, lol

Anyone think this decision will have any impact on the T-SPLOST vote? I know it should not be an issue, but regardless of your opinion on the ruling we all know cost will inevitably increase in the future. I wonder if a lot of folks will see T-SPLOST as away to strike back at a government run amok.
