10/05: Pricier peanut products in store

Moderated by Rick Badie

Peanut farmers expect to harvest their smallest yield in 20 years. Thank the lingering drought, disease and routine decisions to plant other crops.

Shoppers in Atlanta and elsewhere can expect pricier peanut products this fall.

Today, Don Koehler, executive director of the Georgia Peanut Commission, and Middle Georgia farmer Rodney Dawson offer their perspectives.

Read what they have to say and comment below.

Add one more to the not-afraid-to-boycott group.

About 30 years ago there was some sort of supply issue with sugar and the price spiked big time. I stopped using sugar in my coffee and whereever else I could, just on principle, and I’ve never gone back to it. I can do the same with peanuts.

Unfortunately, the prices of all commodities have gone up. Peanuts and peanut butter are still a good value compared to other nuts and sources of protein.

Why don’t ya’ll stick to reporting on crime in Atlanta, something that ya’ll understand, and forget about trying to report on agriculture in Georgia, something that ya’ll will never understand.

I couldn’t help to comment on this on since I am originally from South Georgia. They all lose? Easy Pal. I feel as if this was just a message saying that the price of peanuts will increase not a personal attack. Trust me, I highly doubt any farmer was expecting a drought this severe or anything to drive the price up. If you are from the State of Georgia, you would understand the Agriculture sector is a big business in this state that produces a tremendous amount of GDP that this State needs. And yes the labor situation will hurt the GDP. Guess Governor Deals timing wasn’t the best. Pretty much goes for every other politician in the past ten years. Ex. Obama, Bush. Need another Reagan. Hopefully the drought will not continue in the past so jackasses like you can afford the product but I assure you they had no intention to drive the price up it was a simple thing called no rain, and it pretty much covers the whole South sector in the USA.

They must be having a hard time finding labor to work for peanuts.

Whatever the farmer say about their peanut crops…and that labor was not available; people are going to get smarter anyway. We don’t need peanut-products to move forth; and if the price goes up, consumer will trun to something else. Just because you have a product; it don’t mean it is in demands so whatever they say, don’t make your product where it is overlooked when shopping for other foods and you put yourself in harms way of not saling your peanut product because it is priced higher. I will not be purchasing it when it reaches a high amount. The Farmer, Producers and the companies that market the products..they all lose!

Though I’ve always loved peanuts and especially peanut butter (I even consider it ‘comfort food’), I’ll move on to something less expensive. Sorry, peanut farmers, I feel your pain but won’t and can’t continue to support everyone’s higher prices.
