Atlanta Falcons Joke of a Season Comes to Merciful End

Comedy of Errors Sees Rival Win Division at GA Dome

Nice Moment (AJC)

It’s over. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The end has come to the Atlanta Falcons trainwreck-boatsink-planecrash-disaster-of-a-season, and most fans couldn’t be happier. There will be a time when the angst and deep-seated pain will wash away and some bright light will shine in…..maybe. Considering no major changes will be made, than maybe not. But this post will serve as a cathartic chance to rid yourself of any and all negative and bad feelings about, arguably at least, one of the worst Falcons teams in recent memory. In fact, fans always reference the 2007 season as one of the worst with the whole Michael Vick federal dogfighting ring and Bobby Prictrino sneaking out in the middle of the night episode. Guess how many wins that team had? And the QB was a mix of Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich, and Chris Redman. Now that should give pause to anyone who says there should be fundamental, deep, and major changes to this organization. Oh well, is it 2015 yet?

Everything’s A-OK, right Mr. Blank?

Summary of the Season (AJC)

The assumption is that no major changes will be made in the next few weeks and months. There will be plenty of scapegoats to come. Towel washers, team chef, helmet logo appliers, and a few position coaches. But the main cogs of the worst collapse in the NFL in 2013 will remain in place. The general manager is set to return. The head coach is coming back, and it’s likely both coordinators are as well (might as well, because new coordinators wouldn’t make any difference). lt would be one thing if fans thought that some pending changes would make a difference, but it’s the same problems that have been occurring in year 1 and continue in year 6.

#6, #7, #8, or was this #9? (AJC)

They’ll get an easier schedule and will have less injuries, but if you’re betting that Mike Smith will lead this team to a Super Bowl after so many golden chances, you might be better off predicting that one of the Falcons current offensive linemen will make the Pro Bowl in 2014. It’s fine if you want to go on past regular season success and keep the status quo place. But you might want to prepare for more games that feature more opposing fans, season ticket holders that literally can’t give away tickets, and tailgating lots being as empty as the Falcons pass-rushing ability. Hey, at least the game in London means there’s one less home game.

A Microcosm of Mike Smith in One Play Call

A-OK Mr. Blank (AJC)

The Falcons are playing pretty good early on in the first half (as they usually do before their impending 2nd half doom), they nurse a 10 point lead until a pick six makes it 10-7, and the true Smitty comes out. The Falcons take it down to the Panthers 40 yard line with a handful of minutes left in the game. They come to a 4th and short and he elects to punt the ball. You’re season is over at this point. Your defense has kept their rivals scoreless (7 points came off pick 6). You are 4-11 and literally have nothing to lose. As well, your opponent gets the ball back in the 2nd half as they always do, because the Falcons under you elect to take the ball first. With a chance to potentially get the first down and possibly increase your score to 17-7 or 13-7 at a minimum, you elect to punt on your opponents 40 yard line. Just playing the odds with no emotional drive or attachment with it, correct? Sure. The Panthers conduct a 99 yard touchdown drive that puts them ahead 14-10 and ultimately makes the difference in the game. Why in the hell would anyone believe that anything would change when things are on the line after timidity and fear dominate in a meaningless game at the end of a miserable season. No wonder this team plays scared to lose.

Is there Anything to Salvage on this Offensive Line?

A short answer would be NO after watching this game. 9 sacks, almost 20 QB hurries, and……..you know what, forget the stats: this is the worst offensive line in the entire NFL. Good luck arguing against that statement. Just really, really bad. The defensive line is about as bad. After an early good showing, they predictably fall apart as the game wears on. No pass rush whatsoever. SCam Newton can tie his shoes, dust off his arrogant and egotistical superman shirt, and plan his next event where he charges for his signatures, before he has to make dtouchdown throw. If one were so inclined it would be a great analysis to see where these two lines stack up against the rest of the NFL. Good luck getting out of the gutter on that one.

sCam Does Well (AJC)

To be serious, there’s not to much to get excited about. Peter Konz was a 2nd round pick, the consensus best center in the draft, and many scouts were surprised he dropped as far as he did. He now looks as he would be lucky to make an NFL practice squad. Lamar Holmes was always a reach, and he’s proving as much to date. Joe Hawley was a 4th round pick, but he couldn’t crack the starting lineup until everyone else was injured on the worst offensive line in the NFL. Garrett Reynolds was always a right tackle, since his days in high school. Yet, Smith and their Mensa self thought that Reynolds at 6’7 would make a good guard. Not once, twice, but three times.

Mike Johnson was a guard for one of the greatest college football coaches of all-time, including being an All-American, clearing the way for a Heisman Trophy winner, and winning the National Championship, but Mike Smith and Co. think he’d do a better job at tackle. And then there’s good ol’ Mr. Reliable Sam Baker. At best, he could be a serviceable left tackle for a passing quarterback, but that’s when he’s healthy. Of the 6 years he’s been a Falcons, he’s spent two of them on the injured reserve and had another one completely engulfed in multiple injuries. Natural logic says you reward someone with that dependability with a 6 year / $40+ million dollar contract. If you take a peek at the draft class, you’ll see an abundance of potential franchise left tackles. Go ahead and expect that the Falcons GM will find a way, any way, to pass on them because the Falcons OL is bursting with unrealized talent.

D3– Slight correction. It was 4th and six on the Panther’s 39, before the half, when Smith elected to punt. But I agree 100%. That play was such awful Mike Smith, that I’ve become numb when I see them.

So…………….. one team goes without their QB for 7 weeks and games, not to mention a ton of other injuries. They fight, claw, and put themselves in position to go to the playoffs, and……….they go to said playoffs.

Another team has injuries, but never a game without their Pro Bowl QB, and struggle to win 4 games.

But everything’s OK right King Arthur. Hey, at least you got your buddies to hang out with in your rich press box with sweet hair gel and the invisible GM hand.

D3- I agree, your 100mill QB has to win some games for you. No Qb should throw that many pick 6’s, especially when he only throws 5yd passes. Some changes have to be made before the new stadium is built or we may be back to those black-out days!!!!

Bottom line. Same staff means same crappy draft and same crappy game plan and execution. Face it, we will have wasted the best QB we’ve ever had. Finally got a franchise QB and too stupid to know how to use him. And for ll those haters, I hope they trade Ryan and he wins 4 Superbowls win another team. Preferably in a city’s with a smarter fan base who doesn’t embrace mediocrity. Just like UGA will NEVER win with Richt, Falcons will never win with Smith.

So I guess we’re picking 6th. That still doesn’t guarantee anything. We could still be stuck with the choices of…

2nd best OT?
2nd (or maybe 3rd) best Pass rusher?
Best DT or NT?

If Clowney and Carr are taken, do we reach for the small school phenom Kalil Mack?

With Matthews probably gone (if not we should take him) then we will have a choice of about 4 top notch O Tackles. Any of which could be great or not, all of which would be better than anything we’ve got. Not looking forward to that decision, with TD’s lousy luck at picking linemen. I’d rather have the sure thing (Matthews) that would already make the decision for the Falcon brass.

We could think about trading down if Clowney, Barr & Matthews are gone. Stay at #6 or trade down, either way we will have some really good choices for linemen on both sides. If we trade down and get an extra pick it could open the door to grab a coveted skill player, like a top RB or even another TE.

Looking forward to it already. This team looked great today, in spots, which tells me it is just a matter of a few pieces and we will be right back in the thick of it.

Go Falcons!

Mike Smith needs to be fired this is the worst team in the league at halftime ajustments … Now with that said I use my first two draft picks on OL say pick one best OT avalable Mathews will be gone but there’s depth there . My 2nd rd pick I go after a Guard Cyrus Richardson Baylor would be great but if not best avalable once agin .. That takes care of ol . Then in free agency I’m getting G hardy Carolina at de Lionel Joseph DT giants then sighn c peters DT and I also go after m johnson DE cincy . That still leaves rd 3-7 for TE, RB,, and free safety !!! Guess what I’m saying is first 2 picks OL . My entire free agency will be spent on Dl and picked 3-7 fill in holes.

D3, that link you posted was very revealing IF you want to PAY the AJC for what they post/publish. I do pay $300 somthing dollars a year to get the printed AJC every day and it doesn’t cost me anything to read their “secret” articles. I have noticed that they have pretty well marked everything in the AJC whereas you have to pay to read it.
I know that the print paper business is struggling but I think the AJC is becoming totally useless unless you want to pay for what DOL, Schultz, and Bradley have to say. I’m hoping you have a pland to have our own website because the trivial stuff that the AJC puts out is not woth paying for.

JB — Nah brother, I just wanted you to read the website link, not the actual article. I don”t have access either. Just the part about Hawley messing up because the “opposing crowd” made so much noise in our own dome, it caused him to mess up. Talk about a sensitive little girly man.

And for all those that agree with Coop and I, and many (many) others, this just makes us smile…….

“We appreciate Chud’s passion for the Browns, and we have great respect for him both personally and professionally,” the team said in a statement. “We needed to see progress with this football team. We needed to see development and improvement as the season evolved and, unfortunately, we took a concerning step backward in the second half of the year. Our fans deserve to see a consistently competitive team. We have high standards, and there’s an urgency for success. When we believed we were not positioned to achieve significant progress in 2014, we knew we had to admit that a change was needed, and move forward. Browns fans are the most loyal and passionate supporters in the NFL. We’re fully committed to bringing them the winning football team they deserve.”

On the firing of one year HC Rob Chudzinski. Not saying it’s great to fire guys after one year, but it sure beats the hell out of giving a coach free reign and lasseiz faire for a lifetime after being a beacon of below average mediocrity (Mr. Marcus Richt) or being given lifeline after confidence vote after lifeline even though recognizing deep and incurable fissures in your foundation (Mr. Michael Smith).

Hey, they may not get it done, but I love their statement to their fans that they are urgently committed to winning. There’s simply too many talented guys out there that just need a shot to take good talent and mold it into greatness.

Vince Lombardi didn’t become head coach of the Green Bay Packers until he was 47 years old. John Harbaugh was a special teams coordinator.

D3 – I know I’ll piss a lot of folks off, be we don’t have hard the fans of Cleveland. Atlanta fans suck when it comes to supporting their teams. They revel in mediocrity and don’t insist on greatness. And they don’t sell out stadiums to prevent the opponent from having home field advantage. I’m sick of it.

Leave it to Roddy to speak the d@mn truth……….

“Next year, that’s got to be something that we improve: We’ve got to keep our quarterback clean because he’s not going to make it,” White said. “You keep taking hits and hits and you’re not going to make it. We’re going to have to find ways to get him protected, keep him upright so he can do what he do and that’s make throws and win football games.”

Your diatribe just fell on HairGel the Trader’s deaf ears…………. Much less the White-Haired-Mumbles Doll.

Season is over, thank God. TD is what he is-a mediocre GM who can’t build a consistent winner. MS is what he is-a spineless coach who can’t evaluate talent. AB is what he is-a rich guy who got that way by riding the coattails of Bernie Marcus, never played the game at any level, and was a terrible CEO at Home Depot after Bernie (check the record). The Falcons are what they are-a pathetic franchise that has not won a SuperBowl in their history, filled with pathetic players at many positions (and a very few really good ones). AND, I am what I am, a totally devoted sucker who continues to believe there is a chance for these losers to win the big one. Right now, I hate them! Next September, I’ll be right back watching them and pulling for them. Pathetic! All of us are pathetic!

There is still a way this season can get worse– and that is if they scapegoat Nolan. I see Nolan as one voice of sanity making some progress with the pieces he has. Cam had to beat us with his legs, like the 9er running game did. They physically overpowered us, so chalk that up to Dimitroff.
