Your Favorite Atlanta Falcons Uniforms

Many Fans Prefer Retro Look

Best Falcons Uni? (AJC)

As the Falcons and Football dead zone reaches a zenith in the midst of summer, almost any topics related to the Falcons in some regard are on the table. Since there’s not much of anything going on with the Falcons or the NFL, it’s a good time to take a look at some peripheral items. One of the most spirited topics and debates is the Falcons uniform choices. Most fans seem to prefer the older looks as opposed to the “nouveau” type of unis that some describe as looking like the now defunct XFL or an Arena League team. Here’s a look at all the uniforms the Falcons have donned at some point in their franchise history.

Current Uniforms

Standard Home – Black Helmets / Red Uniforms / White Pants / Red Socks

The Cage's Uniform (Arno)

This has become the regular home jersey the Falcons have adopted in recent memory. After playing around with various combinations, this is what they’ve settled on for the most part. The black helmet has the new Falcons logo with the normal red jersey. During the Vick and Mora Jr. years, the Falcons mostly wore the black paints with it, but the white pants now seem to be what’s worn most. Many fans seemingly aren’t the happiest with this as the main uniform choice and would prefer something else.

Alternate Home – Red Helmets (old logo) / Retro Black Jerseys / White Pants / Stripe Socks

All-white?.......Boring (AJC)

Fans are delighted when the Falcons don these jerseys at home. They usually wear these anywhere between 2 and 3 times per year at home. They usually only break them out for bigger games, especially NFC South rival ones. These are what most fans prefer as the permanent home jerseys or at least have them more often. Many fans feel the old school Falcons logo is classic and just way cooler than the newer one. The team always seem to play better when they wear them and fans sound way more into the game as well. Not sure on the exact record of the Falcons in the throwbacks, but it has to be pretty darn high. Perhaps Flowery Branch feels that it would lose it special nature if they overplayed it. The majority fans would probably disagree.

Standard Away – Black Helmets / White Jersey / White Pants / Black Socks

Any way to Revive the Red Retro? (AJC)

Although this is fairly common across the league, the white on white combination comes off as so dull and boring to many fans. The difference pieces themselves aren’t bad, but it’s nothing to get very excited over. They do mix it up occasionally and don the black pants and some feel that it’s a much better look than the pale and lifeless all-white.

Alternate Away – Black Helmets / White Jerseys / Black Pants / Black Pants

As mentioned above, they don’t break these out much and the change is pretty small, but the color of black pants adds a nice touch to the otherwise bland all-white uniforms.

Recent Combinations

The 2000’s brought some interesting combinations to the Falcons uniforms, where they started mixing and matching various parts of the newer uniforms and provided variety if nothing else.

Home – Black Helmets / Black Jersey / Black Pants / Black Socks

Red and Black Combo?

The “all-black” look was a popular one with during the Jim Mora Jr. reign, but not as much recently. There have been a few times that the Falcons have worn all black uniforms and they’re pretty neat to see every once in awhile, but when there’s other options available, it’s not one of the top ones in the rotation.

Home – Black Helmets / Red Jersey / Black Pants

This was the standard home uniform during the early 2000’s. It’s essentially the same as the current default home uni, just that the black pants replace the white pants. Fans are pretty split on this one. Some like it better, while others prefer the white pants that the Falcons currently wear.

Retro Uniforms

Home – Red Helmets (old logo) / Red Uniforms / White Pants / Striped Socks

Fans from the beginning will remember these uniforms and think about Steve Bartkowski and the 1980 team and many more. It’s been awhile since the Falcons strapped on these uniforms. They look pretty sharp and it would be really cool to see these broken out again. Some would like to see more of the retro return (both the home black and red) and less of the new look uniforms. Fans are starting to buy more and more throwback jerseys and the reintroduction of the retro red would be super cool, according to most. The away version is essentially the same, just replacing the red jerseys with the white jerseys on the road. One more variation on this look is to put on grey pants with the red helmet and red jersey instead of the white ones.

Home – Black Helmets (old logo) / Black Jerseys / Grey Pants / Black Socks

A Return to Bart's Uni Days? (AJC)

The Jerry Glanville days saw the introduction of the “back in black” look on the helmets. They kept the black Falcons logo the same and just colored the helmet black instead of red. They took away the white pants and put in grey in it’s place. Most fans look back fondly on the “back in black” years, if not ahead of the traditional retros. But given the choice, many would take that over the newer looks.

Any Other Looks?

It seems as though pretty much every combination has been tried at some point or another, but as the Seattle Seahawks have shown, there’s always new colors and combinations to try.

I really dislike the plain white pants. I wish we could see the grey/silver again at home or at LEAST black or red pants on the road. The new design is handsome but there needs to be some flair.

Besides that? I like the throwbacks a lot… I miss the old design too. I also recall with fondness the days of the red helmets, red jerseys and silver pants.

I’d like to see us go back to black jerseys, and wear them all 16 games and playoff games… Even when we’re the visiting team… pay whatever fine Goodell hits us with, but go in with the attitude that we’re better than the home team, especially in New Orleans, and we don’t care what the uniform policy is… we’re wearing black, like it or not…

For the first time ever I clicked on one of those interloper thingies and figured they were just trying to add to the subject, so what does Hotels In Venice have to do with Falcon uniforms??
As far as uniforms go, could you imagine the team out there with all of their pads, etc, on without anything to cover them up? Uniforms do not make the team, it’s what’s in them that matter. As long as they cover up their nakedness is fine with me.

I definitely like the throwbacks better than our current uniforms.

These uniforms are perfect. They have the perfect balance of retro with a slight modern touch… http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/z431/michaelfoster/NFL%20Redesign/path9733_zps306b2bb1.png

I like the red helmet/ red shirt. Can’t stand the black helmets. the white shirts are good too. I’ve got a red MR2 uni – got a heckuva deal on it – very sweet, all the amenities are sewn on or embroidered – leftover reebok shirt. little large, but good wearing. shirt is 1-0.

Been w/ Falcons since ‘66. Strongly agree w/ M. Franklin…dump the white pants, anytime, anywhere, period. Away games should have red or black pants w/ black helmets. Home games should have red jerseys w/ black or silver britches w/ red helmets. Return to the traditional Falcon logo on helmets and keep black Falcon logo on shoulder/sleeve. Put multiple talons (logo) on socks. Then, Coach Nolan, return defense to a formidable “unleash the beasts” … Grits Blitz…to terrorize opposing qbs and teams!

I heard that the red and black came from UGA, and that there should actually be some gold thrown in for Georgia Tech. I wouldn’t be opposed to that at all. I do think the all-white unis are a bit bland, and we should go with one that uses more red, sort of like the Texans unis from a few years ago.

When I see a ‘W’ on the scoreboard, I tend to like those unis the best. The retro unis remind me of getting beat by Jerry Rice twice a year– but maybe MR2 will change that perception. I do like the white jerseys– they look ‘faster’ somehow. But that could be from watching too much English soccer.

Great Monday Cage! — Thought the uniforms discussion would be a nice little depart from our normal X’s and O’s talk. It’s not something you do every year, but the only other time it was a topic was when the blog first started: way back in the summer of 2009.

Before I get to my take, I wanted to share a recent purchase I made:

I had two Falcons jerseys: a new black Matt Ryan jersey and a new red Spoon jersey, both Reebok. Those jerseys are pretty good, but as I soon found out with my Ryan jersey, they mess up easy in the wash. I even started getting them dry cleaned for awhile. The numbers come off really easy and they don’t fit quite as well as you’d like (long sleeves, etc).

Well, I just got a Julio throwback black jersey for my birthday and it is SWEET!!!!! Not necessarily because it’s a throwback, but because it’s Nike and quality is way better. The material used is superior and it fits like you’d want it to (it seems they changed it from being identical to an actual pro players jersey that has to fit in pads and made it fit more like a regular shirt, except bigger of course)/

Here’s the only problem, and where the NFL is a huge racket. If you get any other jersey besides Ryan or Roddy (at least in the throwback), than you get completely gouged! A normal replica jersey an or Roddy) comes in at $99. Not great, but not too bad. Well, since I wanted Julio, they had to “customize” it and jumped the price up to $149. That part is a complete ripoff, but for me, I don’t get jerseys but every so often and I want the players that I want. First of all, the customizing excuse is just a reason to jump the price and second of all, Julio shouldn’t have to be customized. I would argue that Julio jersey is the fastest selling right now.

Any way, just my two cents. But the new Nike product is sweet!

Now to my take on the uniforms…………

After playing the new madden recently, one of the options is the old red helmets on red jerseys, and that’s the one I always pick. It is pretty awesome. I really think they should bring this one back this season. Personally, I think our permanent home jersey should be the retro red helmet with the black jerseys that we currently break out every so often.

The red on red should be brought back too in my opinion. I understand that Blank’s new design and logo are more apart of the “new Falcons,” but I think it should be mixed up and put in a rotation. Also, I think that when we do wear the new, regular red uniforms that our pants should be black. I think that combination looks pretty tough. The white pants are just so bland to me, either at home or on the road.

On the road, most of the times you are forced to wear your white jersey, so there’s no control over that. However, our standard away jerseys should always be black pants. That white jersey on white pants is just so d@mn boring and bland to me. I would even like to possibly see red pants, if we had the red retro helmets to match it.

I’m not sure how they do it with the uniforms, really just the helmets, and I’m sure that it would be strain to constantly change the helmets back and forth. My suggestion would be to have two helmets a piece for the year: one regular black and one regular retro. It’s not like they don’t have the money. It may be a lot of upfront cost, but you could easily change the various combinations whenever you felt like it.

Ultimately the point is this: most fans love variations and not only would fans get into the various looks, especially the retro ones, but it also would be a boon to jersey sales for Blank and the NFL in general. It would also be an homage to the history of the Falcons as well as to the long-time fans.

So with all that said, here’s my suggestion on the Falcons jerseys and rotations:

At a minimum, the home jersey rotation should go like this:

+– 4 games in retro uniforms looks (should use black and red; 2 and 2 would be ideal)

+– 4 games in the new look uniforms. Standard, IMHO, should be black helmets, red jerseys, and black pants.

+– Within these 4 new looks, you could mix and match as you wanted. You could do the old

D3

July 1st, 2013
1:56 pm

………..got cut off there…….., but anyway……….

+- Within the 4 new looks, you could mix and match as much as you wanted. You could do the all-black uni’s, red jerseys with white pants, or red jerseys with black pants. If you felt really adventurous, you could throw in something else, like silver pants. Or even don the “Glanville” days unis with the old black logo on black helmets, black jerseys, and silver pants.

+– Road games could have a few combinations and they should never include white pants. The standard should be the new black helmets, white jerseys, and black pants. That looks the best in my opinion. If you wanted to go retro, you could do the red helmets, white jerseys, and red pants as well. The white on white should be cast into eternal darkness.

Honestly, I’d rather have all 8 homes games be retro of some type, but I can understand Blank wanting to have his new logo up as well since (at least I remember) he was the one who was owner when it was changed. This is a happy medium for everyone.

If the amount of change is too difficult for the equipment staff, than you could either buy both sets of helmets (new and retro) or you could schedule the games where it would be minimal changes. 4 new, 4 retro, 4 new, 4 retro. I’ve also been surprised that we haven’t seen an all retro look game with the Falcons and Saints. This year’s Falcons-Niners game would be a good one to have an all-retro look to revive the old NFC West division.

D3 — I agree, the all white should be saved for road games in hot places when the temps are high, although usually the home team opts to wear their white jerseys when it’s hot. Otherwise white jerseys w/ black pants.

I am w/ you on the cost of these jerseys too, outrageously high. I wanted to get a Willy Mo jersey but no one is selling them, so I’d have to get a custom one as well, and it’s not worth it.

For a while I had found a website in china that was selling the authentic reebok jerseys for $20 a piece, and if you had 20 or more it was free shipping, so I pooled w/ a bunch of people at work and I got 2 Roddy Jerseys, 2 Matt Ryan, and a Julio for $100, I found out later the website got shut down, apparently it was people who worked in the factories were taking them and selling them via the web, I would feel bad, but they rip us off on the regular, so I am happy to have plenty of items to wear on gameday

Go Falcons!!!

On to the uni’s, I really do like what the Falcons have done with their evolution through football times. So if I had to go back, I’d like to see the Falcons break out the old red helmets with red jerseys, and maybe some black pants. Sounds tacky, and probably is, but when considering the all time fav’s, I miss the ole red and black helmets that Steve Brat. use to throw in, I would consider the same mostly red, Helmets with red Jersey’s along with red pants or white pants with a nice black accent, probably again, tacky, but I’m an old school Falcons fan.

So- Red and black just go well together. Red jersey/ black helmet or black jersey/ red helmet… just lose the white pants- doesn’t go to well with the black/red scheme.

Home reg season: black pants, red jersey, black helmet
Home playin New Orleans: all black
Home playoff: black pants, black jersey, red helmet
Away: black pants, white jersey, black helmet
Away playin New Orleans: all black (pay the fines, who cares- it’s the Ain’ts)

Unis? I only like the Black Jerseys over certain white pants. Otherwise stay with the black on black, and when you go Black on Black, you might as well go new school, because it’s a sleeker, more predatory look. And don’t go half-assed. All Black means ALL BLACK!. I actually think I prefer the Old school red jersey, Black pants, Alternating Red hat with Black hat. First Falcons gear I ever had was a Red Falcons helmet in 1970. Still have a pic of me with that thing because I took it EVERYWHERE! Also, if you have to go all white on the road, the Falcons have one of the better all white uni’s out there; the new school look with the red and black piping is kinda fashionable. Guess you’d usually wear the Black hat with white, but no real reason not to wear the read every now and then.

Obligatory service to the direction of our illustrious leader’s meme completed; Have you looked at the highlight film of Quizz in that link from Ken S.? I watched almost every minute of every game, and I knew he was good, but this kid is special. Had me literally staring at the screen with my mouth open watching him. That’s a lot of plays in one year’s highlight reel, considering he didn’t get that many touches last year it may be a very good representative sample. I had to watch it a few times to find one play where it didn’t take at least 3 guys to get him on the ground. Often three wasn’t enough, cause the first two were left with broken ankles and/or clutching at the wind as they whiffed on the little Houdini. Any coach who can’t figure out a way to close out a game with Steven Jackson AND Quizz at his disposal, will get a solid F from me at the next grading period.

That was a great video of Quizz highlights. Quizz should have been the starting running back last year. Perhaps the very worst decision of the coaching staff in 2012 was not recognizing or not taking action regarding the situation with MTurner. Starting running back one year and cut the next says it all.

Speaking of Matt Ryan…on a funny note, I am a UGA fan, but I pull for Tech as they were my grandfathers favorite team. Back when Matt Ryan was @ B.C. and they played in Atlanta against Tech, he picked Tech apart and I was so mad, I was screaming at the TV for somebody to put a good hard but legal hit on him to slow him down. It never happened and now I sure am glad no one hurt him.

Most Challenging Summer to Date! — This is the 5th summer The Cage has been in existence and it’s always been somewhat easy to keep it interesting and fresh during the summer. While never easy since you’re having to create points of interest and conversation debates inopic the “dead zone,” it’s been WAY easier than this summer. Let me explain…….

This is the first year that most the starters and overall roster are fairly set. Almost every season there’s usually a plethora of topics to discuss, starter position battles, and roster spots battles. That simply isn’t the case near as much this year. And that’s a very good thing! That means the front office and overall coaching staff have been amazing at their consistency in building this team the right way.

Let’s take a look, for instance, at the returning starters and projected starters we have (kind of like they do in college football):

Returning Starters – Offense
LT – Baker, LG – Blalock, C – Konz*, RG – Reynolds
TE – Gonzo; WR’s – Julio, Roddy, HD
RB – Jackson*
QB – Ryan

*Konz is starting a new position, but he started 11 games at RG; Jackson is the penultimate known commodity stepping in for Turner. While they are technically “new” starters, they’re really not brand new.

So counting 12 (including HD at slot), that makes 10 out of 12 returning starters, where the only brand-spanking new starters will only be right tackle and fullback. And Ewing is a shoe-in at FB and it’s down between Johnson and Holmes at RT.

Returning Offensive Depth
Mike Johnson or Lamar Holmes (loser of RT competition), Joe Hawley, Jason Snelling, Jacquizz Rodgers, Antone Smith, Chase Coffman, Drew Davis, Kevin Cone.

So essentially, the only spots up for grabs are two backup OL spots and one TE spot. Now obviously anything can happen in training camp, but just going by pure returning starters, there’s not a whole lot to talk about, not just in terms of starters, but backup spots too.

Matty B, I read that line about the Falcons O-line, and I’m thinking, this guy seems to know the game, so why would he give the Falcons O-line more props than they deserve. In fact, since his purpose is to dissect the Seahawks defense, it would serve his purpose better to downgrade the Falcons O-line and place more responsibility on the Hawks D. Looking back on the season, the Falcons had pretty good pass blocking all year. Because the run game was so anemic at times, the line may have gotten a bit on an undeserved demerit. You have to wonder how much of the running game futility was defenses selling out to stop Turner. When a d/fense is diving 8 men into the gaps, no offensive line is going to hold up and if the running back can’t make them pay, it looks like bad blocking.
