***Super Cool Cage Poster that Fellow Cage Member Arno Created!***
Sure, it was a good year and it will be an even tougher road back for many fans after this one had the feeling that it could finally be “the year,” but alas it was not in the cards yet again. It was a good year that saw the Falcons starting to take a step further and they did finally rid themselves of the playoff albatross (although no one really cares about that now). Even though it may seem as though it’s the end of the world, it really isn’t. There are a ton of teams that would gladly trade places with our current franchise in being competitive every year and giving themselves a chance every season. It should be acknowledged that this regime has reached heights never before seen in it’s history (they only had back-to-back winning seasons back in 2008 and 2009). But it should be a wakeup call to everyone involved, including Arthur Blank, that changes will need to be made and all apart of the Falcons organization will have to work even harder to finally get to that next level. A look at the game and a peek ahead to the off-season……..
Total Team Loss, Not All Ryan (AJC)
The sensationalist, craven writer and pundit crowd have been waiting for this moment since the kickoff of the 2012 NFL season. Most writers love nothing more than to beat up on a franchise with a terrible history and a known penchant for falling short. The biggest line that is out there is that it’s all Matt Ryan’s fault and he’ll never win the big, never win a Super Bowl, he regularly plays the Grinch at Christmas, and is solely responsible for everything wrong in the world. Sure, he picked a bad time to make a fumble and threw an interception in the second half, even though Roddy White took full responsibility for tripping and that’s exactly what happened on replay. The fact is that this was a complete team loss from top to bottom, including General Manager Thomas Dimitroff as well.
All involved are to blame. The coaches got outcoached halfway into the 2nd quarter and completely overwhelmed in the second half. There literally seemed to be no adjustments to either side after their initial schemes were figured out. The defense had another epic failure, having no answer for really any of the offensive players, particularly Vernon Davis. Seems like the TE was an issue in the Seattle game also, right? The running game stalled. The play-calling became more predictable and less aggressive. Julio Jones was dominant, only to never to be seen from in second half. Roddy White trips on a route, leading to an interception. Harry Douglas trips on a wide open route that would have seen him walk into the endzone. The defense was exposed as being weak and the largest indictment on this regime of all, lack of pass rush, was finally taken advantage of.
Emotional Loss (AJC)
And yes, Matt Ryan isn’t doing himself any favors with his mistakes in the postseason, but in case you haven’t noticed, even the super-elite QBs (Brady, Manning, Rodgers) couldn’t do it all by themselves this year either. There was a reason that the vast majority of pundits picked the Niners, because in almost all aspects save quarterback and wide receiver, the 49ers had better players and more depth. Still, after finding a way to win at the end, the Falcons found a way to lose. It’s not the end of the world, but the Falcons have some big, and perhaps painful, decisions to make if they want to take the whole thing.
Yes, there were two second half turnovers and a stall in the red zone to end the game, but as fellow Cage Member Coop said, being up 17-0 in the first half, playing at home with the crowd going nuts, and allowing the Niners to literally do whatever they want for 3 quarters has epic fail written all over it. In was a mirror repeat of the Seattle game where once the defense seemed to be “figured out” there were no answer to be had. The only problem was that instead of one quarter against the Seahawks, it was essentially 3 quarters vs. a more talented and battle-hardened team in the 49ers. The easy and obvious place to go is to Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator. He’s the one designing the scheme and calling the plays, so he gets much deserved criticism and rightly so.
Mike Smith gets some as well for being a defensive minded head coach working with an excellent DC, only to get completely exposed two weeks in a row on defense. The defensive players get some blame too. There was literally no pass rush (see below) and a less-than 100% John Abraham wasn’t to be found. Of course no one assisted him whatsoever in rushing the passer, but what else is new. The defensive tackles weren’t good either after doing a decent job of keeping Frank Gore and Colin Kaepernick in check early on. They, along with the linebackers, allowed the Niners run game to get on track somewhat and it opened up the pass. Speaking of the linebackers, they were terrible in coverage all night. Coverage was atrocious including all cornerbacks and safeties. Kaepernick had a great second half, but the receivers were so wide open that a high school QB may have completed them.
Tough Way for Gonzo to End It (AJC)
The net was cast wide and far, this was a defensive collapse from top to bottom. Frankly, you don’t deserve to win any championships when you play defense that poorly. Last but not least, Thomas Dimitroff deserves some blame as well. We can talk about schemes and missed assignments all day long, but it was painfully obvious in the second half that this defense simply was overmatched personnel wise, especially along the defensive line. He’s missed on some draft picks on defense and will have to find a way to rectify it both through the draft and free agency if the Falcons will ever take the last step.
The Falcons can take some solace in looking at the team that just beat them to advance to the Super Bowl. The 49ers hosted the Giants just last year and came up just short in their bid to go to the big dance right at the end. They dedicated themselves to pushing through, building themselves up during the regular season vs. good opponents, making some moves in free agency, and using that experience to push down that final barrier. The same can be said of the Packers when they lost the NFC championship at home in 2007 in OT. 3 years later, they were Champs. The Eagles actually lost three straight NFC Title games (two of them at home) before they finally went to the Super Bowl, albeit falling short. Maybe those teams made tweaks, maybe they made overhauls, but they fixed what went wrong in the NFC Title game.
Will Falcons Learn from Niners? (AJC)
This will be discussed at length from now to free agency to the draft and training camp, but the Falcons do have some serious, and perhaps painful decisions to make. The question is whether they have the willpower to make those decisions, which has a mixed history at best the past 4 off-seasons. The opposite is obviously also possible as well. If the Dimitroff, Smith, and Co. feel as though they don’t need to make many fixes and were just a play away from the big dance or make the wrong choices than they could be in for a nosedive. The Bears, Cardinals, Eagles, and Seahawks are all examples of teams that were one game away from the Super Bowl and either did too much, didn’t do enough, or simply made the wrong choices and fell back to playoff obscurity. Coincidentally, all four teams got rid of their coaches soon thereafter.
Every single person associated with the Falcons defensive side of the ball deserves blame on this one, save John Abraham. For the past five years, no one in the organization has been able to muster ANY pass rush whatsoever other than Abraham. That is simply inexcusable on all levels. Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith deserve the most blame because, ultimately, they’re the heads of the ship. Dimitroff has drafted Lawrence Sidbury, Peria Jerry, Jonathan Massaquoi, Cliff Matthews, Travian Roberston, and signed Ray Edwards. Rich McKay isn’t absolved either because the Jamaal Anderson pick at #8 overall set this franchise back years. Dimtroff may have the best intentions and picks skill players pretty well, but he has been abysmal on both sides of the trenches. Matthews and Massaquoi have shown some potential, but that hasn’t translated into results. Which leads into the next point.
Tough Day, but Good Ones Ahead (AJC)
If Dimitroff has failed at drafting defensive lineman, than Mike Smith has failed equally bad with his “Witness Protection Program” (see below). It would be one thing if every single defensive linemen drafted by Dimitroff showed absolutely no potential whatsoever, but that simply isn’t the case either. Sidbury showed some flashes in his very limited time as a Falcon (seemingly coming to an end). They can’t figure out what to do with Kroy Biermann and is a little too light for an every down DE. Robertson showed flashes during preseason only to never be heard from again. Matthews and Massaquoi never saw the field until Abraham got hurt and that’s only a handful examples. They have drafted extremely light defensive tackles that never draw double teams and allow every DE drafted to not see single coverage blocking and only
The fact remains that whatever the issue, the Falcons have failed miserably at all levels to address the pass rush situation. The defensive coordinators have been part of the problem, but they haven’t had a ton to work with for whatever reason. Nolan did a pretty good job early on to generate a pass rush, only to see it submarine yet again towards the end and in the playoffs. If the Falcons organization can’t find some way, any way, to fix it than the Falcons will either be in for a bad year or will not take the next step anyway.
Tony's Great Run in Atlanta (AJC)
This one goes to no one other than Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith. We can talk about the coordinators, schemes, players, and personnel all day long, but the truth is that this is Smith’s problem and his alone. The Falcons have long been good for a quarter, a half, or even 3 quarters, but just cannot find ways to put teams away. Sure enough, it came back to finally bite them big time at the worst moment imaginable. Fans knew it was just a matter of time. It’s true that sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way and other times teams make good adjustments, but this is not only a trend, but an every game certainty. There was one exception with the Giants shutout, but that was about the only one in memory of the last five years.
Some refer to it as a killer instinct. That’s a part of it for sure. Smith has presided over teams with two different sets of coordinators that exemplify the exact same thing of letting teams back in the game. Most times Smith has found a way to win anyway, but that luck finally ran out in the playoffs, as many thought it would. Many times its becoming hyper-conservative with a decent lead. Others it’s trying to run out the clock and others it’s just becoming undisciplined and tensing up. If Smith can somehow find a way to fix this, it could be the final piece in getting over the hump. If he can’t, he might be looking for a new job in the near future.
Plenty of Long Faces (AJC)
The Falcons and Mike Smith could take a cue from Jim Harbaugh, whose on his way to his first Super Bowl. Harbaugh took a lot of heat for changing quarterbacks very late into the season and it’s paid off. Meanwhile, Smith and Co. either can’t make the tough decisions or their changes are at a glacial pace. This will obviously be discussed a ton over the next several months, but there there is some doubt that Smith and, to a lesser extent, Dimitroff that they are unable or unwilling to make the needed changes necessary to take the Falcons to the next level. And Arthur Blank needs to be honest about what he wants as well. He pronounces that only championships will be accepted, but the cold fact is that Mike Smith has led a franchise out of the abyss, but also is 1-4 in the playoffs, has been the #1 seed in the NFC two out of three years, and has yet to grace the Super Bowl. Is Blank prepared to make a hard decision himself if the Falcons have hit a plateau?
Fellow Cage Member Big Ray came up with one of the most poignant, and funny, descriptions of Mike Smith’s Player Development System: Witness Protection Program. Their inability to develop draft picks and get them meaningful playing time is deftly abhorrent. Maybe it’s all on Thomas Dimitroff for drafting poorly, but when fans see players do well at training camp in Flowery Branch and in preseason only never to be seen or heard from again, it’s supremely frustrating. On the surface, it seems that it’s simply Smith’s conservative nature taking hold in every aspect of this team. The list is infinite on seeing potential and never to be seen again: Antone Smith, Drew Davis, Kevin Cone, Lawrence Sidbury, Chris Owens, Dominique Franks, Travian Robertson, Mike Johnson, Lamar Holmes, Dominque Davis, Kerry Meier, Jonathan Massaquoi, Cliff Matthews, Charles Mitchell, and there’s likely plenty more.
Major Changes Needed on D (AJC)
Some of these listed maybe unfair since they were likely just bad picks (Johnson), but others have shown flashes and never seen the field. Not only that, but other players must “wait their turn” and be an apprentice before earning their chance (DeCoud, Moore) or only seeing the field when someone gets hurt (Peter Konz, Matthews, Massaquoi). This is not saying that these players would have necessarily made a difference in the grand scheme of things, but unless you’re a 1st round draft pick, you’re likely to be placed firmly in the Witness Protection Program. As Big Ray has said many times, either keep them, develop them, and let them play or cut them loose.
There can’t be that many things wrong with a team that goes 13-3, gets the #1 seed in the NFC, and is only a play or two away from going to the Super Bowl, right? Well, they had to do something right, but at the same time, his team has some major areas to address in the off-season and it will take an honest, objective, and sometimes difficult look at every single aspect of this team. Successful organizations do it on a regular basis and this is no different. The Falcons are seemingly good in several areas including quarterback, wide receiver, maybe safety, and perhaps cornerback. Even in those areas, the window is either quickly closing (Roddy White, Asante Samuel, Dunta Robinson over 30) or needs another look (is Harry Douglas a legitimate slot receiver? How big of a contract should Ryan get? What happed to the safeties in playoffs?). Those are the best case scenarios. The others, not so much.
One of like 3 Good Plays on D (AJC)
Like mentioned several times above, this will get a long and detailed look in the off-season, but everything else is up for debate. Defensive tackle needs a major overhaul. The Falcons must do something, anything, to solve the defensive end problems. The linebackers, once thought to be a strong area, looked awful in the playoffs. The offensive line played well in the playoffs, but weren’t a Super Bowl caliber unit in the regular season and needs some strength, youth, beef, and overall change to the unit. The running back situation is one of the biggest areas of need. Tony Gonzalez is likely retiring and leaving an enormous void on offense. Punt returner was a joke the entire season and the list goes on and on. Some areas may need tweaks, while others will require major overhauls, and still others will face difficult and sometimes painful decisions. This has been a great run for this franchise, the best in it’s history, but loyalties cannot get in the way of finding the best 53 man roster to make another run, especially on defense. This looks to be the most critical of all the off-seasons to date, seeing the Falcons getting so close, but now looking so far away if some things aren’t fixed in a major way.
We’ve discussed this before in The Cage many times the past several seasons in that the Falcons are reaching one part of a phase where the window is closing for many players that have helped to reach this level of success. Tony Gonzalez is likely retiring. Todd McClure will be 36 in February. Roddy White will be 32 next November. Asante Samuel just turned 32. John Abraham will be 35 in May. Dunta Robinson will be 31 in April. Jonathan Babineaux will be 32 in October. Michael Turner will be 31 in February. The list goes on and on.
Turner's Last Game? (AJC)
This is not to say that the Falcons don’t have a few good years left and some (White, Samuel) have shown no signs of decline while most of the others have. Will the Falcons organization try to go piecemeal and only tinker for one more year or will they make some fairly dramatic changes to set themselves up for the future? It would be tempting to go with the former, but the Falcons are at a point where some major changes are needed in certain areas. This will be a big point in the off-season.
If you are masochist or glutton for punishment than this is your Christmas and Birthday all wrapped into one. You won’t have to venture very far to see that there are literally hundreds of hatchet jobs, gleeful revenge, “I told you so’s,” and “Same Old Falcons” as an ESPN writer said. Matt Ryan is the worst QB to ever grace the playoffs. This is worst franchise to ever play professional sports and should be burned at the stake for even attempting to win. They should have gone 3-13 like those true “same old Falcons.”
Sure, some of the points they make are valid and some major questions will take hold this off-season and some major weaknesses must be addressed, but these are the times why most Falcons fans (and many non-darling team fans) despise national, sensationalistic, and even sometimes, downright hateful sports media. The fact is, these AREN’T the same old Falcons. This regime hasn’t taken the final step, but it has pulled a broken and historically terrible franchise from the ashes to being an annual contender. They completed back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in it’s 40+ year history. They have made the playoffs 4 out of 5 years. They are only second to the New England Patriots in regular season wins (who, by the way, aren’t doing that great themselves in the posteason lately). They finally won a playoff game after everyone said they couldn’t and were a play away from going to the Super Bowl. Sure, this sounds like complete justification and rationalization and, to an extent, it is.
Great Game by JJ (AJC)
The Falcons haven’t figured out how to get over the final hump and Mike Smith and Co. will start entering a much more critical mode this off-season and coming regular season. And if they don’t make certain fixes and tough decisions they could slip right back into mediocrity, but they aren’t those “same old Falcons.” Those would be the ones that never even sniff the playoffs. This is a long-winded way of saying that getting rid of the hateful, virile, infantile, and sensationalistic national sports media may help getting past this loss.

For those of you who are new to The Cage, we ask that you stay with us because even though it won’t have as much to talk about in terms of games, wins, and losses, it can be just as much fun to discuss about all the possibilities for free agency, the draft, off-season questions, and the upcoming 2013 season. The Cage already has a ton of topics ready to roll for the off-season.
No questions, just let it go on the crushing loss, your thoughts on the season that was, a look ahead to the off-season, and anything else about your favorite team………..

Obvious problems-I think…..
Maybe a couple more “attitude” O-Lineman…or just one Harvey Dahl- actually, the O-Line was not all that horrible against the 49ers and Seattle, a couple of teams that could terrorize QBs. Ryan was rushed, sure, but stayed clean, in relative terms when talking about the defenses they were up against. We could use some heft to push the short yardage and run game, though, that’s been crap for two years now
Pass rush. I have no idea where to get it. Maybe get some hosses and run a 3-4. I really don’t envy TD, he has to really build this from scratch, because this is the biggest problem on the D.
LBs that can cover Tight Ends. Really, this is a skill set, stop the run, and cover. Takes speed and brains, a rare combo, but we don’t have anything even resembling it right now.
A dangerous RB. It used to be Turner, and thank heaven he showed up against Seattle. Without that, we would have lost badly.
A kick returner. Again, non-existent.
All in all, I can say we’re not in horrible shape. When the problems become this clear and defined, and we still end up in the Divisional Championship and damn near win it, you’re awfully close.

not after the season he just turned in. As another poster already noted–what coach out there (and available) would be an improvement? A college guy? a Coordinator? one of these “retired” coaches from the TV networks? I’m not opposed to making a HC change but it’s got to be a huge upgrade over Mike Smith and that won’t be easy to find…..

It was PART of the reason.

Interesting stat, none of the top 7 scoring teams in NFL history ever won a Superbowl, keeping the pedal to the metal to make up for other shortcomings is a shortcoming in itself.
On the 4th down play, we San Fran had 5 in the box. We had 2 time outs, the correct play was a draw, but if we ran the ball and were stopped short….OMG, could you imagine?

Mike Smith isn’t going anywhere anytime soon I figure. And as others have said, has to be a clear upgrade before you make that move. I mean, REALLY clear. You can make a serious mistake in that area.
I give Smitty this – he picked better Coordinators the second time around. I think what he now needs to do is get into the nitty gritty…give those Coordinators some things they want.
If Koetter wants a better RB to run with and throw to…give it to him.
If Nolan wants to go with a 3-4 or is willing to settle for a couple of pieces that he thinks will set his squad right…give it to him.
Smitty has gone further with both guys than he was ever going to go with the previous Coordinators. They’ve helped him get over that one little playoff hump and can help him go even further. Time to show them some love, and the way you do that is to give them more tools to work with.
Now, if Smitty can’t do that, then he will have assured where he’s going to peak. And next time those guys get job interviews, they may take them a lot more seriously.
Just sayin’….you need continuity on your staff, but give and take is part of that. Brought these guys in for fresh ideas…time to act on those. But act smartly.

On 4th and 4, San Fran had a 4/2/5 alignment with 5 in the box, we had 6 OL in the game and a tight end. We went to our strength, our “talent” when a draw would have all buy guaranteed a 1st down.

Big Lou ,
I’ve been a big proponent of Thomas Dimitroff. That said, this organization can’t advance if he doesn’t learn from past mistakes (Edwards, Jerry) and make some GOOD moves this offseason.
On offense, a good RB can be a serious difference maker, even if we lose TG to retirement. Hell, we could end up being better .
On defense…gotta tweak the secondary…but more than that, we have to…HAVE TO..solidify that D-Line. Having a fully healthy Corey Peters will help, but we’ve got to have more than that. We need a guy who causes problems on the interior.
We also need more than a one-man, one-legged pass rush. I think we can grab all the talent we can handle at DE but it won’t make a spitball’s worth of difference if the DT position isn’t making trouble for opposing offenses.

I think Smitty should be judged on next year performance ON next years performance. How is that?
Losses like we had can destroy a team, or just show the intestinal fortitude we need to keep coming back until we get it right.
If we can run the gauntlet that we face next year and get back in the playoffs, I really don’t care to even discuss it. If we go 6-10, it is time for a change.
We need a running back and linebackers.

We need a running back and linebackers.
Need DL more than LBs….unless we’re gonna run a 3-4 (in which case we STILL need a couple of big DTs). We spent most of the year running just 2 LBs and it killed us against the run.
We also got very little consistent pressure from the edges outside of John Abraham, and even that has to be put into perspective. Abe no longer comes up big in big games for the most part…
LBs almost always look better when the DL is playing better than average. Clay Matthews hasn’t looked near as good since BJ Raji and the other hogs haven’t played as well.
On the RB….we can’t scream that one loud enough if you ask me.

Big Ray – Agreed on the RB scream. And the D-Line is obvious. It’s been Abraham and nothing else for so long now. He can’t keep it up, and we saw what happened after he gets banged up, it was as sad as our pass rush has looked, like almost ever.
Even the high-flying Saints and Rams SB teams had VERY good run games. So do San Fran and Baltimore this year. As a compliment to their passing attack, which is also vaunted. You just have to have them both, and you have to be able to deploy them as the game dictates effectively. Key word being effectively…not running a back into a line every time on first down. Please, please don’t let us go back to that.

This was the most devastating loss in recent memory for me. I LOVE my Falcons and always defend them, no matter what all the talking heads are saying. Also, I live on the Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin border so I’m surrounded by Packer and Bear fans and I really thought this was our year, I really want to see at least 1 SB in our history and I worry that w/ TG88 retiring we might’ve missed our best chance, hopefully it’s just post-loss blues/negativity, but I feel deflated.
I do believe we can come back strong, but this defense needs some adrenaline, after the first 4 games I really thought that Nolan had done it, but I’m not so sure anymore what to think.
I have love for all Falcons Nation, I mourn w/ you ATL

I wouldn’t mind seeing us get a couple of Alabama players in the draft this year, maybe Lacey at RB in the 3rd or 4th depending on how he grades out, and somebody on that vaunted defense, we need champions on this team, people who are used to and expect to win, maybe Jesse Williams at DT for the other.
I just can’t get this taste out of my mouth, that was our game and we let them back and handed it to them giftwrapped.

There’s so much to get into, I just don’t know where to start, but I’ll pick up on a point that SOMEBODY mentioned a little earlier regarding Smith……..
I am really pulling for the guy and that is no bull and perhaps the following example isn’t the best, but here goes anyway:
As a UGA grad and fan, I’m afraid we might be getting close to “Mark Richt” category. Richt has been a wonderful coach for many reasons: great leader, excellent guy overall, good mentor for young men, great person to have as the face of your program, consistent winner year in and year out, superb recruiter, and the list goes on and on. But….. ZERO National Championships in 12 years, and in fact, never even playing for one.
In that same time span, Nick Saban has won 4 with two different teams. Meyer won 2, Miles won one, and even now-fired Chizik won one (albeit with (S)Cam at the helm). One of the reasons I’ve always been more hard on Richt than many UGA fans is that I know from watching the NFL so closely how much talent has come through the UGA program and I’m not just talking about Matthew Stafford and Charles Johnson, but a TON of guys that weren’t household names, but are balling in the NFL.
Great regular season coach, but just can’t get over that final hump. Pretty amazing how similar the endings for both UGA and the Falcons were, in the same stadium nonetheless.
I’m afraid that Smith may have missed his big chance. We should certainly be right back there again, but there are simply no guarantees on that. Take a look at the Seattle game. In all objectivity, we really should have lost that game. Up 27-7 in 4th quarter and go down a point with 31 second left?
Don’t we see a trend. Up 17-0 in first half and even then we answered 24-14 to curb some of that momentum. Many will blame Matt Ryan and his two mistakes. Should it really have come to that? People quickly forget that the Niners should really have scored that TD when Crabtree fumbled on the one yard line. You’re telling me our defense can’t come up with one frackin’ stop after the Niners offense got going? (true, the Cliff Matt penalty was garbage, but those are the breaks sometimes).
This is “put-up-or-shut-up” year for Smitty. I’m glad we’re not making a rash decision and canning him because he did win a playoff game….barely….and the candidates out there are not good. He deserves another shot and we’ll know everything we need to know pretty quickly. Much more difficult schedule and huge off-season.
I still think rationally with my brain that Smitty can maybe get it done, but emotionally with my heart that hope is starting to fade. And the “you can never second-guess yourself as coach” just struck the wrong note with me. 2 out of last 3 years we’ve had #1 seed and nary a Super Bowl appearance. I guess my question is, how much better do we expect it to get? Peyton is back with NO, Bucs have talent, and (S)Cam may finally be getting it together.

I was talking to a friend of might yesterday and one thing I came to realize is we need to wait it’s great to sit here and talk about what kind of players we want, but we don’t have anything to go on. YET!(Key word)
I’m all fo upgrading the DL(Biggest need) RB(Second biggest), but right now we need to see who’s bolting who remains, and what transpires out of FA Market(like who will go from which teams).
Like right now Drafting a Eddie Lacy sounds great in fact I’m all for it 110% If it’s second round pick.
Also no lie if we can get more draft picks say somewhere between 3-4 for Brent Grimes I’d be for that as well. This might not be a popular idea so if you want to flame me have at it lol.

Stats of the Title Round No. 2: In its two playoff games, Atlanta went ahead by a combined 37-0, then was outscored by a combined 17-56.
And there you go right there in a complete nutshell: that’s all coaching 100%. Maybe it’s some of the coordinators fault, but the person at the head of the ship is Smith and that’s just flat embarrassing right there. Kind of holds the theory of “once we were figured out” that was it. Just terrible.

Smitty over his headset in the divisional round: “The tight end is killing us!”
And he never made the adjustment on defense, in that game or the championship.

So when you put that together the score is 54-56 here’s the issue though with all this. Apparently both teams we played forgot Defense as well. That’s one thing most people don’t realize when looking at both these games.
When we played Seattle their opponents score was what like 15.3 We scored 30 on them.
We played Seattle I do realize we got shutout in 2nd half, but we also ran all over the suppose Defensive Juggernaut of SF 49ers.

Ray — You make some very good points, especially the ones about Alabama players. Totally agree. Jesse Williams at DT, Barrett Jones at C/RG, or Eddie Lacy at RB would all work for me, but Lacy would have to be third round or later.
The issue regarding us scoring on the Seahawks and Niners defense is correct, but they made stops when they absolutely had to. We are the exact opposite, we made stops early on and got completely torn to shreds soon thereafter. Yes, we did it for 3 quarters vs. Seattle, but the Niners literally did whatever they wanted to for almost 3 full quarters. Shameful.

I read earlier that darrell has picked up on the Chris Ivory FA possibility also. The kid is 24 and would be the perfect compliment to Quizz. Eddie Lacy sounds good but can we get him and is he already proven that he can handle the NFL? Don’t think the Aints will be able to re-sign him what with their money problems and all and they already have three other good Rb’s.
There are also some good linemen comping up on the FA list.

The Falcons had an admirable season and gave us a terrific show. Thank you for the memories. Will await some offseason news and hope for another competitive season later this year. We’re close to the big game but need a few roster changes and some faith in our home team. Go Falcons!

We did I agree, but still two mistakes that would extremely costly to us INT and Fumble if not for those two we win the game. In fact the score might 31-28 with Falcons winning. I just don’t want people to forget these guys were suppose to be ALL WORLD DEFENSE Talking about Seattle and 49ers we basically kept Gore in check and also Colin Kap don’t be fooled either the better of these two teams in the Seahawks trust me on that.
I’m looking forward to Ray Lewis and Co. Feasting on 49ers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Don’t you think turnovers had something to do with it? I don’t blame Ryan, it looked like the 95 falcons, the entire game was based on him beating 11 other guys. Over the course of a game, it wears a man down.
If our plan is for the guy to put up 500 yards, and 5 TDs to win, we are screwed…..I do blame Smitty, but I also think we see the result of the gameplan we all wanted to see, to use our “talent” and throw the ball around.
As I said many times, a Wasted Turner Carry is NOT the worst possible outcome of a football play. Football is still about field position, turnovers, controlling the clock, and defense, as much as any other fact of the game.

Not to pick a fight, I did not like wasted turner carries any more than the next guy, but you can’t win consistently against the best teams in the NFL with a 25/75 run/pass ratio.
When you get a 17 point lead, you RUN THE BALL. On 3rd and 4, and 4th and 4, with 2 time outs, we faced 5 in the box and did not run. You will not win being afraid to run the ball.

That was also another problem as much as people celebrated the fumble by Crabtree that one actually doomed us. Because we were backed into a wall/corner couldn’t even get out. I’d rather go 4 and out at 30 and above then at 30 and below. What I means is going 4 and out at our 30 yard line would have been better than 4 and out when we were at the 1 yard line.

Also, what there some irony that the same end zone where CMR came up 5 yards short is where Smitty came up short? There is some bad mojo in that endzone.

Agreed BR, still can’t understand why TG ran a 5 yard pattern on 3rd and 6.
Also, it was an opportunity for Bosher to justify his pick….Put a new punter on my wish list too.

Thanks for all of your hard work D3. Just hope you are wrong about Smitty, but I have this bad feeling you are right. I heard the same comment about not second guessing himself and that did not stick well with me either. How else do you come up with a plan for improvement? Anyway, just hope we get back there next year. Still love Matt Ryan. Think he’s very talented, just constricted by Smith perhaps?

I have to agree, MB. I noticed Troy Aikman was very astute in calling the game. On offense, he praised SF for patiently sticking with their running game and that proved huge down the stretch. And he said SF would need to start bringing some pressure on Ryan and that too proved huge — think the near miss to Julio on that go route, as Ryan had to step away from pressure and that disrupted the timing, allowing the DB to make a play, the fumbled snap, which was caused by Ryan looking away to get a guage of the blitz, and the final series, which were hurried passes under duress. Yep, Troy called it on how SF could win and he was right.

It’ll be really interesting to see what happens with Brent Grimes…
There’s no way I’d commit to the type of money he was demanding last season. With the emergence of Robert McClain and Asante and Dunta still being on the books, I don’t see us needing to exhaust that much cap space on Grimes. With that said, Grimes is still a good corner. I think help is needed elsewhere, but for the right price, I wouldn’t mind seeing him back.

Also, I heard something that I felt was very true…
When running into these read option offenses, your defense is stuck essentially playing 11 vs. 12.
It essentially feels like there’s an extra player out there for the offense, and that’s why we’re always seeing someone running wide open. It’s not an excuse, it’s just gotta be noted how extremely difficult this offense is to stop. Unless you can somehow find a way to neautralize the front with a dominant line, you’re gonna have to use LB’s and safeties to account for the RB and QB. The QB’s mobility is essentially an extra RB on the field for them. At the same time, dude poses the threat of throwing the football down the field.
I just felt that was a good way of putting it. 11 vs. 12. That’s essentially what it felt like we were watching often times on Sunday with guys running free.
It wasn’t just a problem for us, everybody’s had problems defending it.

Whose decision was it to stop running the ball? It wasn’t Ryan, you can bet on that.

I hear ya. JSS is a historic troll. He’s been haunting the AJC blogs for some time now, spewing hatred of anything and everything Atlanta-sports related.
Dude has a crappy life, obviously. And he always reads to see if somebody has responded to his drivel. The guy is a world-class A-hole.

The smart NFL coaches do what they always do when faced with a college game type of issue. They call the college coaches that have to face it all the time, and ask for advice on how to stop it.
As for Grimes, I agree that he could come back for the right price…otherwise kick rocks. My biggest thing is this – does he still have the athleticism that made him good at his job? That’s what this team needs to know. Grimes + his vertical = good to go. Grimes – his vertical = no thanks.
We need to add another CB though, if we don’t go with him. McClain should have cemented his spot, Asante has something left, Dunta is still at least a good hitter but sometimes gets burned badly on coverage. I’d add another just to be safe.

Here is a list of RB’s I’d like to go after.
Eddie Lacy, Marcus Lattimore(USC), and Christine Michael(TAMU) two can be had undrafted or if you reach take Lattimore in 5th round he might not be available after that.
Eddie Lacy is the Replacement of Michael Turner in all this. Marcus Lattimore if drafted late would be low risk EXTREME high reward given what has happened to him.
Christine Michael could also be a nice pickup, but thing is choose between either him or Lattimore liked what I saw even though it’s small at TAMU, but few people are saying he may be a surprise maybe not Alfred Morris, but Doug Martin type.

BR, I am not absolving Smitty, if the pattern was a 5 yard pattern, well, that was plain stupid. Maybe th plan was thinking that he could catch it and turn it up, but I hated whom ever made the all.
As for not running the ball, again, poor decision. My point, that ain’t Smittyball, thats a coach who started believing the hype that we have special unstoppable weapons and getting away from what got him there. But when you are 3rd and 4 facing a 5 man box and a nickle defense, you got to check down to a draw.
Look, I am not a blame game guy, 31 teams lose, that does not mean there is a guy on all 31 teams who is to “blame”. I see Denver fired their D back coach who did a great job all season, sure, his was an epic fail, but there was enough fail in Denver to spread around for everyone.
My point, if we can get back to the playoffs again next year and run that gauntlet, I will be in Smittys corner. If not, his time may very well have come to move on…..I also do not buy the “window closing, for other than Gonzo, there is not a guy on the team save Ryan, JJ Spoon, and Roddy whom I care of they leave tomorrow, and those 4 have quite a few years left….

If We go 3-4 GET ME JOHN JENKINS FROM UGA(GO DAWGS) He was a DGD and he would surely be a massive improvement over what we have.
The only DE out there it seems so far with what I’d the most we could hope for is Margus Hunt out of SMU unless someone knows of other DE’s coming out.

As for Smitty being a guy who can win a championship? I have to say, they day they hired him, I said I would be surprised if it legacy tops the Swamp Fox as the 3rd best coach in Falcon history, but he proved me wrong them….Maybe that is why I like the guy.
