Our cardiac Falcons couldn’t make it easy on themselves or their fans could they? What a game, a thrilling finish, and the amazing death of the “playoff curse,” or whatever you want to call it. The Falcons came roaring out of the gates behind a huge crowd who were in their seats and loud from the first moment. The first half was a thing of beauty that saw the Falcons surge to a 20-0 lead, and even responding with their own touchdown on their first possession after the Seahawks took the opening drive down for a TD. Then, the wheels came completely off. Maybe a better analogy would be that they absolutely shut down in all phases of the game, seeing the Seahawks score 21 unanswered points. However, the Falcons found a way to win the game, needing only 31 seconds to do it. Kudos to the entire organization, from the players and coaches to Thomas Dimitroff and Arthur Blank and all the way to the support staff. It was a wonderful win in so many ways, even if it did almost send many of us into cardiac arrest. A look at the huge playoff win………….
Right Up There w/ Morten Anderson in '99 (AJC)
No two people on the planet are likely happier today than Mike Smith and Matt Ryan. For the past 5 seasons, all that has been said has been Smith and Ryan’s inability to win the playoffs. The 0-3 playoff record has been stated so many times by so many media members that it was not only annoying, but just complete overkill. It literally has been repeated thousands of times as an excuse to denigrate or outright ignore the success the Falcons have had. Some of it may have been a little justified, but using it as an excuse to trash them in week 3 of the regular season? It wasn’t pretty at the end and Smith darn near tried to give it away, but it’s done once and for all. The media elite will have to come up with another excuse to slam the Falcons because the “can’t win in the playoffs” garbage is gone forever.
Turner Big Day (AJC)
Where did that come from? The Atlanta Falcons have been one of the worst rushing football teams in the league the whole year and most of the times only ran enough to keep the defense at least somewhat honest. That was not the case on Sunday. Michael Turner ran for 98 yards on 14 carries with a long of 33 and Jacquizz Rodgers put on a highlight show when he trucked All-Pro safety Earl Thomas as if he were playing Madden. The offensive line was a big part of the running success and hats go way off to them. After being criticized so often and so heavily over the season, they showed up ready to play on Sunday and the running game was on track for most of the game because of it. The success on the ground also opened up the passing and play-action game, which was also a big reason for the win.
Fans are still trying to figure out what happened that precipitated a complete defensive meltdown in the 4th quarter, that darn nearly cost them the game after being up 27-7 in the final quarter. It may not have been one thing in particular, but a slew of really awful performances, from the players to the coaching. The defensive pass rush was non-existent, as Russell Wilson had enough time to do his taxes in the backfield. It literally seemed on one play that he almost 10 full seconds to try and find someone, without nary a Falcon even close. Some of it was losing John Abraham, but it seemed as though the scheme wasn’t even that concerned on pressuring Wilson. One of the main reasons that Brian VanGorder “found another job” was his insanely soft zones where QBs could just sit back and pick them apart with ease. That fourth quarter zone was as bad a zone / scheme as any of those the previous 4 years, with maybe the exception of the loss to the Packers in 2011 in the playoffs.
Best Catch of All (AJC)
The Falcons also picked a terrible time to stop tackling well, after they had done such a good job of it in the previous 3 quarters. Maybe it was just a case of being way too confident with a 3 score lead with a quarter to go. Perhaps Coach Smith or Mike Nolan decided to just sit back in the zone and hope that the Seahawks wouldn’t have enough time or that the rookie QB would finally make a mistake (even though he gave no reason for them to think that). Zach Miller was made to look like Tony Gonzalez, Shannon Sharpe, and Kellen Winslow Sr. rolled into one. It was shameful how wide open Miller, Golden Tate, and Sidney Rice were in that fourth quarter. As fellow Cage member SOMEBODY said, it was like they were playing catch in the backyard. Maybe the entire team tightened up as the game was falling apart (the offense literally stopped doing anything, the coaches submarined, and even the special teams participated in the collapse). In hindsight, the fact is that the defense did a good enough job to keep them to 7 points for 3 quarters and decided to have a really bad last quarter. The Birds shouldn’t have that issue vs. the 49ers, since it projects to be closer for all 4 quarters rather than just 1.
Should Spoon & Co. Even Show UP? (AJC)
Yes, that is actually what a writer for the San Francisco Examiner wrote in one of the most blatant, poorly written articles about the Atlanta Falcons, maybe ever. According to this writer, if that’s what we’re calling him, his vaunted San Francisco 49ers are the best team to ever grace the field in this game we call football. They have the best RB’s, OL, DL, LB’s, and overall team in the history of the NFL. David and Goliath? No, this is more like Goliath vs. an ant. Should the Falcons even show up or just forfeit to the greatest ever? In all seriousness, there’s nothing wrong with saying the Niners are better on paper and likely should be favored and may even win the game, but this is something altogether different. When the 49ers got blown out by the Seahawks, Giants, lost the Rams (and tied them), and even the Vikings, it’s all good to discard. But when the Falcons WIN the games that were close with bad teams, that’s a sign it’s a mere formality. Not to pick on this writer too much, because really he’s just representing what pretty much everyone in the media (including hometown media) are saying: these Falcons have no shot whatsoever. Luckily, we get to actually play the games. That David kid was pretty small, right?
Can Willy Mo & Crew Contain the Great QB? (AJC)
First of all, Kaepernick is not a rookie. He was taken in last year’s draft in 2011. So, even though it’s his first year playing, he’s not fresh out of college. After the Niners QB ran rings around the Packers and their poor gameplan, all involved are crowning him the next superhero of the NFL. And if the Falcons play as they did vs. Russell Wilson in the 4th quarter or Cam Newton in the second game, than he very well could set records rushing and passing. There simply is no denying that he is a special talent, but he’s not the first mobile quarterback that has been stopped, nor is he the first mobile QB that the Falcons have played this year. In fact, the Birds are 4-1 vs. all mobile QBs they’ve faced this year. Yes, they haven’t always done particularly well vs. mobile QBs, but they have found ways to win 80% of those games.
The defensive line is definitely undermanned and undersized against the Niners big and burly OL and the linebackers could surely use a touch more speed as well. First of all, you can’t imagine that Nolan will be running much type of man coverage the way the Packers got torched on and one benefit of running the 4-3 defense is it’s ability to plug gaps better and stop mobile QBs. Fellow Cage Member trademark detailed it best when describing how the old Tampa 2 defense used to not only contain, but downright destroy Michael Vick in his heyday here in Atlanta. Much like shutting down Marshawn Lynch vs. Seattle, Nolan will likely either use some type of QB Spy on Kaepernick, make the QB beat him with his arm, make Frank Gore carry the load, or some combination of them all. One idea might be to replace one of the LBs or nickel backs with William Moore, insert Chris Hope in as strong safety, and let William Moore track Kaepernick all over the field, having the speed and the hitting ability to slow down the talented QB.
What a Catch! (AJC)
Even though they don’t have as good a secondary as the Seahawks, the 49ers have one of the very best front seven in all of football. Aldon Smith, Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, and Navorro Bowman make up a nightmare for any team because they stop the run so well, but especially get after the quarterback as good or better than anyone in the league. Are the Falcons doomed vs. the great Niners defense? As Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast my friend!” Yes, it will be a major challenge, but if you feel as though you can’t get it done vs. the best, what makes you think you have any shot at the Lombardi Trophy?
No team had scored higher than 17 points since around week 7 this season until the Falcons scored 20 points on them in the first half and then 27 in the third quarter. Even though the media elite will gush and rave over the Niners being the best defense since the 2000 Ravens, they can be scored on to. The question is how. The natural inclination would be to keep rolling with the hot hand of running the football. Michael Turner and Jacquizz Rodgers put on a show on Sunday and racked up some major yards, most of them coming in just 3 quarters. Can the Birds do the same against a tougher defensive front 7? It sure would be nice, but the Niners will likely plan to stop the run anyway they can and surely not let Turner and Rodgers do what they did to the Seahawks defense. If the run fails, how long should they stick with it, and further, does playing clock control offense play into the Niners hands?
Beautiful Play! (AJC)
One clue from the past that might could work is Falcons vs. Ravens, Thursday Night Football in 2010. Matt Ryan ran the no-huddle offense virtually the entire game and tore the stellar Ravens defense to shreds. He was 32 for 50 passing, with 316 yards, 3 TDs, and no INTs. Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s probably a good idea to have Matt Ryan throw the ball 50 times against such a great defense, but the Niners defense have many similarities to that Ravens. They have a great DL, great LB’s, studs at safety, but decent-at-best corners. The no-huddle is unpredictable and can not only help a blitizing team at bay, but also allows Matt Ryan to do what he does best which is call the shots, change the play if needed, and run the offense. In addition, it can also help wear out the strength of their team (LBs and Big DL). Maybe the Ravens game was just an element of surprise and maybe the Ravens depended heavily on substitutions, which the Niners do not. But it’s something that may help counter a tough, tough defense.
Short and simple – will the Birds get it done on Sunday and be in the Super Bowl?

matty – hate to break it to you you, but you are not objective. you are STRONGLY in the pollyanna sector of the cage. I understand management and the risks of change – with the success smith has, he has been given a long rope. However, our penchant for playing to the competittion, failing to put teams away, and a general lack of a killer instinct is well established. However, i think Baker has fulfilled the faith Smitty had in him (although ONLY Smitty knew how injured he was until after the fact). If we had fulfilled the first half promise of slaughtering the Seahawks – say the score was 35-14, nobody would still have that gnawing doubt in the back of their head – will the Dr. Jekyll or Mr Hyde team show up? The Giants win gave me a ton of hope. the TB loss left me scratching my head – what the bleep are we doing? it is that inconsistency which prompts trepidation. I’ve advocated for Smitty getting canned in a number scenarios. One of the key ones was getting embarassed again in the playoff for the 3rd consecutive season. THAT did not happen – THAT is a terrific reflection on the benefits of switching out coordinators. Our offense was better and our defense implemented the game plan – which was terrific until the offenses’ wheels fell off in the 4th quarter (Smitty Ball). At this point, Smitty has him another year or two. IF we win tomorrow, he has at least another 5 years – provided Koetter continues to show improvement and a dynamic offense. NOLAN has already provided us with a dynamic defense – it adjusts depending upon the opponent. We stifled BOTH Mannings – a very nice accomplishment. As state, if Smitty wins the SB – he is here the rest of his career. Regarding best coaches – I’d give it to Noll or Landry. Long term success. Landry had success in 3 different decades. GO FALCONS!!!

Matty – I was in the effing dome. It was about midway through the 3rd quarter were we tried to run the ball consecutively to eat up clock. I sat down in my chair, looked up, and it was about half way through the 3rd quarter. believe it or not, if YOU run the ball well, you can eat up the clock and score. that was what made Smitty Ball successful the first 3 years under MM.

for a little perspective: usually, folks are sports fans – you root for your home city’s teams – Falcons, Braves, hawks. It seems rather condescending for anyone old enough to remember the Atlanta Braves’ 14 consecutive Division championships to be lectured about teams losing in the playoff more than they won. The key problem here – which pollyanna twits conveniently IGNORE to substantiate their weak positions – if you go to the playoffs 3 consecutive times, are one and done in each of them, and get absolutely BLOWN OUT in the last 2, your coaching staff may have a problem playing against OTHER elite teams – or, preparing his team properly to EXCEL in the playoffs. Pollyannaists ignore that aspect – or, simply can’t process that ASPECT of reality. I’m a Boston Red Sox fan – they condition you to be pessimistic. We FIRED our manager due to his blowing a couple games in the ALCS against the Yanks – and that meant that the manager had won a series. Why’d we fire him? he made BAD decisions in crunch time -despite being successful during the regular season. What was the result? We won the WS in 2004. AGain in 2007. First time in 86 effing years. Some times success – average success – does NOT cut it. To be blind to that is a key element of pollyanna – or utopianistic – or delusional. nuff said. However, with the last win, provided we don’t get utterly crushed tomorrow, Smitty will be here another 2 years. BUT, remember – PROCESS – this year, due to our excellent regular season (another perk) – the Falcons – under this new regime (since 2008) are HOSTING the NFC championship game. THAT is progress. AND, we have 5 consecutive winning seasons – that is very near elite. Hopefully, we shall take that next step. Over on the other side, I’m hoping the Ravens win – I like Ray Lewis and Torrey Smith.

DLed’s piece on Dimitroff’s successes and failures in team building shows how fortunate we have been in our choice of GM. Every year, he’s had guys from his staff leaving for bigger and better jobs, and advancing guys from within. Other up and comers in scouting/coaching see that and have to put Atlanta among the most desirable destinations in the league. TD should have his pick of applicants to fill out the ranks of our scouting dept. Winning on the field starts with the front office having their act together and Dimitroff seems to operating at a high level…now we need to take the next step up to the SB and solidify the franchise as legitimate contenders consistently. I trust TD to make the decision on retention of our HC carefully if, as Paddy suggests, he determines change is needed. Given his history, he’d probably advance one of our coordinators to the top spot for continuity’s sake. Hopefully, Smitty will lead well in the next 2 games and put that talk to rest with a SB win….

Quick thought…
A lot of the talk all week has been about how to stop Kaepernick. I’m hoping that the Falcons defense doesn’t key in on him so much that they allow everybody else to just run free and wild.
I’m confident that we’ll see some different looks than we saw last week. No way I see Mike Nolan leaving our deficiencies from last week exposed this week.

Matty Bicep strikes me as a person who will continually make a right turn every time he comes to a red light, simply because he doesn’t want to face reality and actually STOP.
Must have been a hell of a dodgeball player in grade school, as evidenced by the ability to change the subject presented by me and attempt a straw argument on another specified subject altogether.

GREAT CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY CAGERS!
Well, it’s finally here. Had a bunch of stuff to get done yesterday so I could get rarin’ and ready to go. Will miss being in the Dome today, but I’ll be just fine in my mancave raising hell.
I have a comfortable feeling about this game. All week, my buddies and co-workers keep asking, “so what do ya think?” I said, “well as long as we don’t get beat by 50 points that would be victory according to all the media elite experts.” I have a good feeling about this one. I think this one might be a little opposite than last time. I think that instead of the Seahawks waiting to rally at the end that the Niners will come in and give their best shot first.
I think that Kaepernick will try and force the his run right off the bat and try to force that read-option and he forgets that Mike Nolan has found a way to shut down the best of the best of the QBs. Yes, we’ve had some trouble with mobile QBs, but it’s not like we haven’t played them. Add that in and our record is 4-1 vs. mobile QBs, not too bad.
No predictions from me, but I got a really good feeling, unlike the Seahawks game where I was a complete trainwreck.

From Mark Bradley’s article, first paragraph………..
The Atlanta Falcons, safety Thomas DeCoud said this week, “have been underestimated and called overrated” all year, and when you think about it, that’s a tough daily double. Overrated AND underestimated? Whoa, Nellie.
Could we be ready to see an explosion of all that built-up anger and hostility throughout the year from virtually every media source?

According to Pregame.com, the Falcons are the biggest underdog any No. 1 seed has ever been at any point in any postseason, and they’re the biggest home underdog in a conference championship game since the playoffs expanded to 10 teams in 1978.
In all honesty, I’m really glad we’re not in the position that the Niners are in. As one of my betting boys would say, “this has trap written all over it,” concerning the huge point spread.

I’m with you on the ‘comfortable feeling’ D3.
By no means will this be an easy game. But, a lot of folks are talking as though the Niners are heads and shoulders better than the Falcons, and I don’t buy that. I think the Falcons have the sound of a group that’s somewhat tired of hearing about how they’re ‘overrated’ and play with a chip on their shoulder.
This win would prove every f’n naysayer out there to be stupid. I expect Kaepernick to press things a bit.
The defensive guys have all been singing the same tune about having a ‘great gameplan’. I’ve heard Asante and Spoon both mention ‘great gameplan’ the past couple days. Asante said they were just ironing out the wrinkles a few days back. I think we’ll see the kitchen sink thrown at the Niners today. Throw everything out there and save nothing. Leave it all out on the field.

Gotta give credit where it’s due and say that there have been far more good picks than bad ones from this regime. So good that Spoon didn’t even make the top five best moves list. OK maybe we could have gotten Clay Matthews, but DT was a much bigger need at the time, and who knows how Matthews would have fared in BVG’s vanilla defensive scheme?

Can’t believe the NFL network brought in Russell Wilson to discuss whether/why the Falcons are overlooked. And they still have the nerve to continue to say it’s because the Falcons haven’t won in the playoffs. Got to give PrimeTime Sanders some props for calling bullsh!t on the brainless arguements that aer still being put out there.
So we don’t have a dominant defense? Guess we didn’t shut-out the Giants. I suppose we didn’t hold Drew Brees to Zero passing touchdowns, something no other team has been able to do in the past 4 years. It must not matter that we have a top 5 scoring defense.
Matt Ryan is still unproven? Can’t really dispute the simple fact that he hasn’t won a Super Bowl. But why is it that Kaepernick gets all that love and he hasn’t even had a full winning season in the NFL. Is there any other QB who absolutely gets no love until he wins a Super Bowl. Guess the highest home winning percentage of any QB doesn’t matter either.
Keep the disrespect coming national media. I hope the Falcons are cutting the clips and piping this noise into the locker room. I’m ready for some Angry Bird Football!

Look, I don’t know what to say, if you see impeding doom when we successfully run the ball on a time consuming TD drive to go back up 20, then totally ignore a 4th quarter pick, like that has nothing to do with letting Seattle back in the game…..it just gets absurd.
Anyway, this pollyanna is heading out to the dome to go see the team all the non-believers said can’t play in the NFC championship game, play in the championship game….go figure.

Morning all. I bitch and call out the troll board often, not really their fault the mods won’t clear out the trolls and some do nice work over there. If the talking heads and clueless d-bags like Sapp are ruining your pre-game build up then try these instead;
The Quiz 012 lights – ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgH51Ijtzrg&feature=player_embedded )
For our own anti-Ryan agenda troll, Ryan’s 012 hlights ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46WNPYa8DJM )
The Ryan one is in HD and Torris did a great job with it…shout out and props to you, your work hasn’t gone unnoticed over here. For the Ryan haters, that vid is now my answer to any and all of your stupid questions and comments…the rest I hope you enjoy.
