Time to Get it Done!!!!! (AJC)
New thread up to talk Falcons vs. Seahawks in one of the biggest games in franchise history. The matchups have been analyzed to pieces and the storylines have been beaten to a pulp. It all comes down to who wants it more. The Falcons must win this game for so many reasons, the least of which is to move on in the playoffs. Will be back with more analysis and breakdown very soon, but this one has taken its toll on the Atlanta Falcon Faithful. NO MORE EXCUSES, IT’S TIME TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP!!!!!!…………

The Falcons have always had a decent team, this year’s team is no surprise. It seems that since Matt Ryan improved his game, timing, strength training. He finally got on par after reviewing Peyton Manning’s earlier tapes when Peyton was with the Colts. Matt has been known to choke in December in the playoffs. So goes the team as the Q.B. I hope I’m wrong, though we will find out tomorrow. Though this game is definitely a team sport. You’ve never seen a team reach the Super Bowl, who’s quarterback wasn’t a true leader. You don’t get there by luck, though it does help.

FINALLY HERE CAGE FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!
Jeez, I’ve been a wreck all week and thank goodness it’s here. Feeling nervous and anxious. I’ve said this many times and I stick by it: there’s simply no excuses not to win this game. If we don’t win today, why should Smith get another year? A year with no Gonzo, Abe and Roddy a year older, etc., etc.
And let’s be honest here, this is our best chance to hoist the Lombardi. It’s very rare that teams have consecutively good years like we did. Not saying it CAN’T happen, but the law of averages says otherwise.
Can’t believe the Broncos choked it away. Thought it was going to be a blowout. John Fox looks like one of the dumbest coaches ever. Peyton Manning at QB, 31 seconds left, and 2 timeouts to get in field goal range to win the game and you decide to go into OT voluntarily? Just wow. Denvers defense got exposed. Still not a believer that Flacco can win the whole shebang, but the Ravens are playing inspired football b/c Ray is retiring.
I see a lot of us freaking out over the Niners. Well, first of all, we have to win today or it won’t matter. And yes, they are a good team, but did we really expect to not to have to play the best and beat the best to be the best? They did look good out there, but let’s remember that this is the same GB defense that allowed the Vikings and their “explosive” offense to rack up 38 points. It would be an insanely tough test, but I truly believe we can beat anyone in the NFL this year.

Man, already have trouble breathing….jacked, I think, honestly, if I could get in for just one play, I could light up a Seahawk just as much as any of our guys. OK, ok, maybe not.
I still am not scared by any team in this league, 49ers included. I think we’ve won our last two meetings with them (barely), so at the very least, it’ll be a tough one.
But, one thing at a time, tunnel vision. One play at a time. Get this one!
Go Falcons!!

From ESPN Insider:
Home-field advantage, passing game tip scales toward Falcons
By Matt Williamson
Seattle at Atlanta
When: 1:00 PM ET

Preview
Scouts Inc. Position Advantage
”
After watching film of both teams, Scouts Inc. breaks down key elements of the divisional-round matchup between the Seahawks and Falcons.
• Get a ground game going: The Georgia Dome will be loud and full of emotion, giving the Falcons the immediate advantage, but that doesn’t mean that ignoring their rushing attack is a good idea as the game goes along. And the running game is the biggest weakness to this offense. Michael Turner isn’t what he once was and no longer shows top lateral agility or burst. Jacquizz Rodgers is ideally a change-of-pace type rather than a back suited for a full workload. This running game is very different depending on which back is in the game. With Turner, Atlanta uses heavier personnel and rarely goes to its potent hurry-up attack. With Rodgers, the Falcons are usually in passing mode. Still, all this being said about their deficiencies in the run game, the Falcons’ offense is one of the best on first downs in the league, which obviously helps it stay out of unfavorable down-and-distance situations. Against a superb Washington running offense, Seattle held Alfred Morris to 80 yards on the ground. That number is misleading, as the Seahawks were often handled in the trenches. But overall, opposing running backs have done very little against the Seahawks of late.
• Rattle Wilson: This is easier said than done. The Falcons’ pass defense is much better, and quite good overall, when bringing extra pressure. But Russell Wilson handles pressure well and is capable of taking off and running to beat a blitz. The Falcons are very difficult to prepare for and throw an awful lot at opposing quarterbacks. They will utilize some blitz concepts and varied coverages that Wilson hasn’t seen on tape, but Wilson has been superb in not turning the ball over. Wilson is very advanced mentally for a rookie quarterback.
• Feature the Big Three: The Falcons have a great threesome of receiving weapons in Julio Jones, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez. Jones led the Falcons in end zone targets, but White and Gonzalez are also superb options in this area of the field. Drops were an issue for Jones, but he has the most big-play ability of the group and is great with the ball in his hands. Richard Sherman might be the best cover man in the game today. It will be interesting to see how Seattle utilizes Sherman, putting him on either Jones or White. With safety Earl Thomas roaming in deep center field, Sherman and fellow CB Brandon Browner have room for error and can afford to be aggressive in coverage. The Seahawks will play a lot of two-deep safeties with man principles underneath against such a dangerous passing attack. Matt Ryan is a superb passer between the numbers, where Gonzalez is his primary option. Gonzalez caught a whopping 93 passes at age 36 in 2012. Tight ends are doing some damage against Seattle, and the Falcons are putting Gonzalez in the slot now with more regularity.
• Home QB: Ryan leads one of the league’s best passing attacks and is one of the best pocket passers in the NFL. He is at his best out of the shotgun and is quickly becoming a master of the no-huddle offense. Ryan has been simply outstanding on third downs. He is also a superb play-action passer, which has been effective for Atlanta even when its running game isn’t clicking. Seattle held Washington under 100 yards passing in the wild-card round. The Seahawks have not allowed more than 17 points since Week 12.
• Away QB: Wilson, a Rookie of the Year candidate, threw for only 187 yards last week but added 67 timely rushing yards on the way to getting his 12th win of the season. Still, he was average as a passer. He needs to be aware of an aggressive Falcons secondary, led by ball hawk Asante Samuel. Zach Miller was Seattle’s leading receiver last week, but it is Sidney Rice who causes problems with his size, especially downfield. Golden Tate is the more explosive option and is very good with the ball in his hands. Wilson is a quickly developing play-action passer, which is instrumental in this offense.
• Key positional battle — Seahawks RBs vs. Falcons run defense: Marshawn Lynch is the key to the entire Seattle team. He averaged a whopping 6.6 yards per carry and rushed for 132 yards in Washington last week. That was his 11th 100-yard game of the year. Extremely competitive and physical, Lynch is one of the league’s best runners after contact and finishers of runs. Robert Turbin has been a very helpful complement to Lynch, keeping the Seahawks’ star runner fresh for late in games, when Seattle often wears down its opponent. Seattle has incorporated more option into its run game and was very effective with it last week, but Wilson can be too quick to run at times. Although Atlanta’s linebackers and safeties are very active, the Falcons’ run defense has been subpar this year. The Falcons allowed a whopping 4.8 yards per rushing attempt in 2012, 29th in the NFL, and are especially vulnerable on the interior. The Falcons like to incorporate a lot of their nickel package on early downs, but that would be a terrible decision this week against Lynch & Co. Led by Max Unger in the run game, the Seahawks are physical up front. Plus, they get ample help from their tight ends, wideouts and fullback, as this team will utilize a lot of two-back sets.
• Featured player: John Abraham is Atlanta’s best pass-rusher. He will line up at right or left defensive end, but more often on the right, where he will do battle with Seattle’s best pass-protector, Russell Okung. That is a great individual matchup. Wilson was sacked five times against a Washington defense that doesn’t have a pass-rusher nearly on Abraham’s level. Plus, that was on a very sloppy surface, while Abraham & Co. will have the benefit this week of attacking Wilson in a dome and with a loud crowd on their side. Wilson has been sacked 11 times over the past two games.
• Film room nuggets: Both teams are solid on special teams, which is important to note in what looks to be a very close game. … What Ryan has not yet totally proved is that he can handle being under consistent pressure and operate in an unstable pocket where he can’t set his feet. Seattle will be without Chris Clemons (knee), its best pass-rusher, and the Seahawks are not getting after opposing quarterbacks as well as they did early in the season.
Prediction
Atlanta 27
Seattle 20
Atlanta, where the Falcons were 7-1 this year, is an extremely difficult place to play. Although Lynch is primed for a massive game, the Falcons are the fresher team. Their dynamic passing attack will eventually prevail in an excellent game.”
I agree, 27-20 Falcons!!!

Agree with D3…
I’m more focused about today than any potential matchup next week.
Quick thought on today…
TD and Smitty have been building this team to beat out juggernaut type offenses like the Packers and Saints. Well, the teams left don’t necessarily have those elite Superbowl winning QB’s, they field beasty hellacious defenses that feature power running football. Are we built to beat these teams? We haven’t really had an opportunity thus far this season, but we’ll get our chance today – and should we win – we’ll have to do it again next week.
On the Niners, they’ve been this type of team all season. They look incredible one week, and everybody crowns them the ‘most complete team in football’ and heaps the praise on their shoulders. And then, it seems more times than not, they fall back down to earth somewhat. We’ve seen it all season. They beat the Pats, and then they get blown out @ SEA just a couple weeks back. They’re a great team, but the consistency hasn’t necessarily been there.
We’ll see if we get our shot vs. them next week. Lets just get there 1st.

JJ — Thanks for those matchups. I may be in the minority here, but I actually think we’re going to stop Marshawn Lynch. Nolan has proven that when needed, he can stop a feature RB (Doug Martin, Lesean McCoy, etc).
Julius — Welcome! Great post. Gotta get it done today.
Stevereeno — Welcome also! Yeah, we get caught up in the analysis and breakdown and, yeah, it is just a game that we can and should win.
darrell — Yeah, not sure what’s going on with the other blogs, but it appears you now have to register. This one hasn’t changed over yet and I hope it doesn’t.
Birdman — Can’t get here fast enough!
trademark — I can’t really remember ever looking toward a game in my life. Maybe the 2002 SEC Champ with UGA and the Falcons Super Bowl, but this one is just different. More pressure than the other ones.
Wabe — I’m just really not scared of anyone in the NFL playoffs this year. Every team has their strengths and their flaws. Truthfully, if we went to the Super Bowl, I was most worried about having to face Peyton again, but that won’t happen now. Gotta take one step at a time though.

I’ve talked crap about Flacco many times, but I have to give him credit. He did his job last night. Not to mention, he 4-2 in the playoffs with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions.
I know the Matt Ryan shrine originated in the Cage, but he has to prove something this year. He has 3 TD with 4 INT and 2 fumbles. I know it’s the past, and he’s had a heck of a season. I believe in the deuce. But, if he lays another egg… we are going to need to question his mental toughness.
I know he did it big time in College, but the NFL is a different beast.
I hope he proves the haters wrong today. I think that Kid will be big time if he gets that playoff monkey off his back.
Matt. Just as we said about the coaches… no more excuses. Just f!cking win. With Seahawks weak azz pass rush, you should win this game.

Good interview with Spoon………
How do you and your teammates handle the outside pressure being put on you based on previous lack of success in the postseason?:
“I won’t look at it as pressure; I look at it as motivation. You get what you earn in this league, and we put ourselves in the position that we wanted to put ourselves in. For everyone to be not really talking about us and saying we’re the team that could potentially drop one — because we haven’t won in the playoffs — that’s something that you’ve got to use as fuel to your fire in order to get over that hump. I don’t look at it as pressure; I just look at it as a great opportunity.”
http://sportsradiointerviews.com/2013/01/11/nfl-playoffs-atlanta-falcons-seattle-seahawks-sean-weatherspoon/
We always wonder if the players are hearing all the s–t talked about them and whether they use it as fuel to their fire. I think Spoon helped answer that.

I’m been somewhat nervous/anxious all week…
But honestly, I’m feeling pretty confident this morning. I keep going back to that Giants game. This team played that game with playoff feel. They had something to prove. You could tell they came well prepared, and then they let it rip.
I don’t see us blowing the Seahawks out. But, with all the emphasis on this teams ability to win in the postseason, and with a chip on their shoulder, I think they’ve taken these two weeks to get into the best possible state preparation wise, and I think that bodes well for what we’ll see on the field.
I also agree with D3. I think Lynch will be a factor, but I don’t think we’ll allow him to beat us. I’m somewhat worried about their big O-Line, because we are undermanned up front, and we can’t key in on him so much so that it leaves Russell Wilson free to take off on the edges.
It’ll also be critical to make sure we get them into longer 3rd down situations. It’ll be extremely difficult trying to stop that read option on 3rd and less than 5 consistently. Gotta win the battles on 1st and 2nd down to set them up in longer 3rd down/distance situations.
I’m confident man!

‘Falcons believe if they establish Michael Turner and force Seahawks into 1-on-1 coverage, they might win easily today’
———
I know a lot of people hate seeing that, but I support this thought. There’s no way we’ll stack up against great defenses and beat them if we become one dimensional. More possible this week than next week. But, with that said, Seattle’s run defense isn’t on par with the Niners. They can be exploited somewhat. And with Clemons out, there’s even greater potential there.
I actually think we’ll see our run game be somewhat successful today. I don’t want them to ride or die on the run game, but we do have to show some concerted effort to get it established.
Run right at Bruce Irvin. He showed some vulnerability last week against the Skins vs. the run.

I am so ready for some football. Because after watching the playoff games that have been decided thus far, I’m really at a complete and total loss as to how all of these teams get so much more respect and adoration than the Falcons. I’m going to turn on the tv today, and flip between NFL and ESPN. Their shows will be called NFL TODAY, but I’m sure it’s going to play more like NFL YESTERDAY or TOMORROW. This is the one day they should be all Falcons, all the time, but it’s not going to happen. Because the media has spent a full season discounting my Falcons and now they have absolutely no idea what is going on with the number one seed in the NFC. The talking heads today are going to be all about what happened yesterday, and all about what’s going to happen tonight, and they are, as usual, going to be pretty much all wrong. Because they have predicated the majority of their prognostication on a monumental fallacy.
The playoffs, and in fact most football games, aren’t decided by one overriding personality or player. Win or lose, it’s going to be the result of a team effort, on both sides of the ball. All you heard yesterday was how Peyton and Rodgers, simply were too good to lose. And yet they both lost. If Denver hadn’t gotten a totally unanticipated, but outstanding performance from their diminutive return man (along with some totally headscratching crappy play from the Ravens Special Teams units), that game wouldn’t even have been close. The media chose to ignore the simple fact that Baltimore has lived and died on their defensive performance for over a decade, and that defense had at least one more good game in them.
San Fran and Green Bay? Neither looked like the force of nature the talking heads want to paint them to be. There is absolutely no way the Falcons defense lets Kapurnik ran all over the field like that. 100 yards rushing in the first half? Ridiculous. Looked like Vick? Even more ridiculous, because if anyone had ever been stupid enough to play Vick like that in his prime, Vick would’ve run for 300 yards. But having the entire defense turn their back on a QB whose claim to fame is mobility is insanity that not even VanGorder would have dreamed up. The 49er run game looked pedestrian, and the vaunted defense seemed for the most part unable to put any real pressure on Rodgers, when GB has at best a shaky offensive line.
Plus the games have been so full of mistakes, turnovers, penalties, boneheaded plays, of the type that you just don’t see from the Falcons. These are the teams to fear? No. They are not. they may have a player to watch. But they aren’t a TEAM to fear.
The Falcons are a TEAM. They are well coached, and for the most part, they execute their game plan very well. Maybe there isn’t one player that you can point to as the one who will win the game for you, But there is a team of Falcons players on both sides of the ball who are going to support each other and do the things that the TEAM needs to get done to come out victorious. It’s happened over and over again. And I guess it’s been so subtle that all those talking heads, who get paid millions to spout their supposed expert opinions, have totally missed it.
It’s going to happen again about 3 hours from now. And they are probably going to miss it again. We already know that Russell Wilson is expected to become the next Fran Tarkenton, today. Marshawn Lynch is expected to win the rushing title, today. The Seattle defense is expected to pitch a shutout, zero yards and zero points, today. And when that doesn’t happen, there will be a few moments of stunned silence before someone finally starts talking about how tired the Seahawks were or how lucky the Falcons were to have homefield advantage (I thought you had to earn that). Then the talk will move on to how badly the Falcons will lose next week.
Some people, even fans, won’t appreciate how truly good this TEAM and the Falcons organization is and has been, until years after this run. But I for one am loving it right now. Hell, we even have, hands down, the best marketing campaign in the NFL. What do Falcons do?

Ummmm…..
1) Your defense has carried you every year. Who did they interview after the game? Ray Lewis. Then there’s guys like Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata, Ed Reed.
2) Your deep ball is ALL you have. You can’t check down, have no pre-snap reads, suck at going through your progressions.
3) Good thing Anquan Boldin didn’t stay with the Arizona Cardinals. He made more plays on your “throw in his somewhat general direction” passes than I can count.
4) You barely complete half of your passes.
5) Ray Rice…I need say no more.

The national media has thrown the Falcons under the bus the entire season. Now is the day that all of there disrespectful hoopla can be evaporated with a Falcon win. Sadly, the national media wants to continue to beat that drum. Its time for the Falcons to breakthrough. I tell ya, what’s really laughable is the comparison of RW3 and MR2. Granted RW3 won a playoff game and I give him credit for that, however, it being against another rookie QB that was noticeable injured. On the other hand MR2 went against CW13 as a rookie, and then AR12 and lastly EM10. All 3 Superbowl winning QBs. MR2 and the Falcons must get it done today, period.

Flacco, your defense gave up 21 points. there were two ridiculous returns for 14 of Denver’s 35.
I’m hoping the Falcons are watching NFL Network and ESPN. The disrespect is palpable. They are even joking about disrespecting the Falcons. Even the things the Falcons do well, are being talked about as “vulnerabilities” against this Seattle juggernaut. It’s like Seattle has no weak spots, but the Falcons are just one big weak spot. Case in point. To prove the Falcons can’t stop the run, they show highlights of running backs and Cam Newton gashing the Falcons defense. And all those plays did happen. But we only lost TWO of those games where a runner managed to break off a big run against us, and one of those was against the Saints, who depended far more on Brees to pull off that close win in the second half when the Falcons actually did shut down the run. The Falcons can’t stop the run, yet almost every time we needed to stop the run to win the game, somehow they managed to do it.
The Falcons are going to roll today. It’s not homerism, at least most of it isn’t. I’ve been watching football for long enough to be realistic and honest about my team. It’s very easy to look at something another team does well, and then extrapolate that the Falcons won’t be able to handle it. It’s also very shortsighted and disregards the simple fact that the Falcons have run up against all the things they supposedly can’t handle this year, prolific QB’s, great running backs, superior defensive lines, etc etc etc. And they have come out on top more often than not. Is it different in the playoffs? Maybe a little bit. But this Falcons team is significantly different than the past Falcons teams that weren’t able to win. And the result this time, will be significantly different.
