Atlanta Falcons: Birds Face Playoff Questions

Time for the Falcons to Get it Done

Time to Get it Done #2 (AJC)

It’s what we’ve all been waiting for: the playoffs. Falcons players, fans, and everyone associated with the organization have heard it all the way back to last January when they were embarrassed for the second year in a row in the playoffs, losing three out of four. The chorus from the media elite and talking heads has only grown louder every time the Birds won another game. There are literally almost no articles that have been written this season regarding the Falcons, in any capacity, that have not mentioned the “can’t win in the playoffs,” or “0-3 in the playoffs,” meme. Even articles that have been favorable or complimentary always have that backhand tucked in there somewhere. Yes, it’s true the Falcons have fallen short the past three tries in the playoffs under Coach Smith, but the incessant and ridiculous inclusion of that attack line has been preposterous. How could the Falcons change anything about past or the postseason in week 4?

The time has come for this head coach, this quarterback, and this organization to put this garbage to rest. For some, it will never be enough until the Falcons win the Super Bowl outright, and even then some will rationalize it away. However, getting over that hump will do wonders for all associated with the Falcons and blow up that assault once and for all. Fans likely can’t even go to what it will be like if they don’t win this one.

Have Lessons Been Learned? Part 2

This is a sequel to last weeks post regarding planning and preparation on the part of the coaching staff, specifically Head Coach Mike Smith. An article by the AJC’s D. Orlando Ledbetter discussed how different this year’s preparation will be both during the bye week and after. It appears that Smith has learned his lessons, because the details of how truly soft their bye week preparation that was done, is shocking. The idea of a team earning a bye week is just like the bye week during the season, teams can get their team as healthy as possible, working on fundamentals that have been slipping, and fix problems that cropped up.

Time to Cut Julio Loose (AJC)

Smith evidently felt it was a time have cookies and punch. He gave them 3 days off during the bye week, had them report on Thursday, and then gave them the rest of the weekend off. Yes, that’s no joke. It’s actually a wonder the Falcons didn’t get beat worse than 48-21 in the Debacle in the Dome by the Packers. It’s understandable that you don’t want to do Oklahoma drills all day and treat it like training camp battles, but for goodness sake, you’ve got to find a way to keep somewhat of an edge. Smith has said all the right things and it seems he got the message loud and clear after his initial approach. Smith was quoted as saying something along the lines of “we’re going to do do everything completely different than the last time.” That’s surely music to fans ears.

Momentum is a Guarantee of Playoff Success, Right?

Most talking head media elites are ready to crown the Seahawks and the Redskins as NFC champions because they are on a winning streak going into the playoffs. Many writers and so-called experts are all about the recent trends, don’t really do research, and just go with what’s popular. It’s very true that the past two years, the wild card teams have squeaked into the playoffs and gone on to win the Super Bowl, the Packers in 2010 and the Giants in 2011. Both teams were 6th seeds and that has become a very popular theme because that’s what’s in vogue. The Giants were a wild card in 2007 and went on to beat the mighty undefeated Patriots. The Steelers were a wild card in 2005 and they beat a stacked AFC that year.

No More Arm Tackles DeCoud (AJC)

ESPN even went as far as to develop a stat that read “of the 36 most recent playoff teams, 11 that have been on a 5+ game winning streak have gone to the Super Bowl. 5 of those have won the Super Bowl. The Broncos, Redskins, and Seahawks are on a 5+ game winning streak.” What kind of stat is that? And furthermore, that comes to a whopping 30% of success on getting to the Super Bowl and 14% winning it. They might as well done a statistic on cleat colors and playoff success. Talk about curtailing statistics to fit your biased opinion.

Yes, the past two years and 3 out of 4 have favored the team that has momentum, a fairly mythical construction all on it’s own, but statistics are past numbers for a reason. If the same researchers go back a little further (most statisticians averse to determine a “trend” less than decade), they would see a fairly inconclusive analysis. A list of the past 10 seasons:

Season — Super Bowl Winner — Seed

2011 – Giants – #4 Division Champ

2010 – Packers – #6 Wild Card

2009 – Saints – #1 Bye

2008 – Steelers – #2 Bye

2007 – Giants – #5 Wild Card

2006 – Colts – #3 Division Champ

2005 – Steelers – #6 Wild Card

2004 – Patriots – #2 Bye

2003 – Patriots – #1 Bye

2002 – Bucs – #2 Bye

So there you have the list of the past 10 Super Bowl winners. Even though recent history says that getting hot at the right time, barely getting in the playoffs as a wildcard, or being on a winning streak guarantees you a Super Bowl or playoff success, the fact is that it’s a fairly insignificant probability over the last 10 years, despite what’s “popular” among the media elite. The last 10 years have seen 50% of teams with a bye win the Super Bowl, 30% Wild Cards, and 20% as Division Champs. The point is not to say that momentum can’t play a part in playing well in the playoffs and ultimately winning the Super Bowl, but it’s simply meant to bust all the media elite’s strict adherence to “playing well close to the playoffs guarantees playoff success” and thereby denigrating or outright ignoring the Falcons. After all, the Saints actually lost 3 games in a row before winning the whole thing.

Underdogs Again

The Falcons and everyone associated with their organization won’t lack for any motivation when they tee it up next Sunday at 1 pm. To be fair, the Falcons losing all 3 of their playoff games, with the last two being embarrassing blowouts, have given most “media elite experts” every reason to doubt the Falcons. Unfortunately for Falcons fans, that is the painful truth. However, the experts have taken that meme and ran away with it, all the way back since April and continuing on to mini-camp until now. It seems that it’s a “anyone but the Falcons” in the NFC mantra for most that know everything there is to know about football and the NFL (too bad we can’t use these experts to solve world hunger, eh?).

Spoon's Big Arena (AJC)

The Seahawks and the Redskins are everyone’s darlings because A) they’re not the Falcons and B) they’re the wild cards who are on a winning streak (see point above). The Packers and Niners are the traditional teams who have been their favorites all year, even if they’re not the flavor-of-the-week wild cards, but of course they’re always the backups. Maybe the only other team close to the Falcons are the Vikings, but they have MVP, All-World running back Adrian Peterson and that’s definitely a feel-good storyline better than those terrible Falcons.

Of course this will come across as whiny to any non-Falcon fans, and it might be a little bit, but Falcons fans are sick and tired of hearing it and it’s impossible to imagine how much the players are. Truth be told, the Falcons, particularly Mike Smith, haven’t helped themselves at all. Todd McClure said something to the effect of flying under the radar all the way to February. Looks like he’s going to get his wish. They say that bulletin board material can only go so far and doesn’t win games in the end, but it surely can’t help to add in a little extra fire when the game kicks off or when things get tough.

Which Offense Will Show Up?

The Falcons jekyll and hyde offense surely has some fans worried about next Sunday. To be fair, the Falcons have done a much better job overall with consistency than year’s past, including some really nice offensive explosions like the Chiefs, Eagles, and Giants game. However, they’ve also put up some big clunkers as well. It’s hard to imagine the Birds coming out as flat as they did the previous two years in the playoffs, but some bad offensive outputs may have fans a little nervous. While looking dominant at times, they’ve also looked downright anemic as well, such as they did vs. the Raiders, Cardinals, the Saints second game, and the Panthers second game, not to mention the most recent game vs. the Bucs. Something that may ease fans concerns a bit is the fact that their very best offensive game came against the defending Super Bowl Champion Giants and a darn good one came a week later vs. Detroit that saw them go up 21-3 before they started sitting on their lead. The players keep saying it’s a different attitude and feeling than year’s past and here’s hoping that the clunker offense is gone for good.

Will the Giants/Broncos or the Panthers/Bucs Defense Show Up?

Although being a touch more consistent than the offense, the defense has had it’s ups and downs as well. They came to be known as the elite QB killing defense that saw them intercept the Manning brothers and Drew Brees 10 times, not to mention shutting down Phillip Rivers, Michael Vick, and Tony Romo. But they’ve also had their own fair share of issues at times, especially in the run game. Cam Newton had his way both times with the Falcons defense, especially the second time in Charlotte which was arguably one of the best games of his career. Josh Freeman looked like Superman in the last game and Drew Brees put up plenty of points the first time in New Orleans.

Asante's Leadership Will Be Key (AJC)

They’ve generally done pretty good against the pass, but they’ve had major issues at stopping the run at times. They stopped Doug Martin the first time, only to get shredded the second. Alfred Morris ran for over 100 yards, even though he was held to to no TDs. Cam Newton and the Panthers running backs racked up yards like it was going out of style and they even had major problems with Saints running backs, namely Chris Ivory. Although they’ve done light years better in the takeaway department, they’ve only marginally better in the pass rush. The Falcons defense will have their hands full which ever team they play first, be it Russell Wilson / Marshawn Lynch, Robert Griffin III / Alfred Morris, or Christian Ponder / Adrian Peterson. Birds fans are hoping that the Magician Mike Nolan has saved his best for last.

D3, that’s an awful lot of questions and a very good article. We’re only going to have ONE shot at breaking the yolk around our neck. ONE game and we’re going to have to come out smokin’ with everything we have. We need to set the bar for the next game by winning the first one with authority. I know we have to win the first one to get to the second one, I think we all learned that in the first grade. I truly expect us to show up in the swamp and will only think otherwise until our Falcons prove me wrong, and not until then. Instead of “lose and go home” I prefer “win and you’re in.”

A few (haha) notes…

The Falcons play really well, especially at home, after a loss.
The Falcons play better as underdogs as opposed to a favored team.
The Falcons play better when the media trash them prior to the game. (Peyton Manning was mentioned 118 times on ESPN MNF pregame.)
Matt Ryan has a chance here to approach this playoff with some experience from past mistakes. He does, however, seem to get rattled easy early in any game but settles down latter to make up for that.
Pass D becomes frazzled when the run D is runover, as was the case in two of our three losses.
The first and fourth quarters are critical control points. If our ops get way ahead in the first, or are not shut down in the fourth, we tend to collapse.

Points of focus: Run D and pass rush.

End product: Falcons win Super Bowl in the unholy arena of New Orleans – Fans celebrate all year!

I think any Falcons fan who knows this team realizes that they are more than capable of beating anyone. However we also know that we can lose to anyone. I am nervous and anxious. My main concerns are 1) inability to stop the run knowing we are going to get a good dose of it in round 1, given the fact that 1 of the top 3 backs in the NFC will be paying us a visit. 2) our inability to convert 3rd and shorts. I have been pleased that our o- tackles have played better this year, however the interior has been a major concern for me.

Next Sunday I am hoping to see some creativity and see every player elevate his level of play over the regular season. I am hoping with the coordinator changes from last year we will see this team come out like they did against the Broncos and Giants. It seems to me the last couple of years we have played not to lose rather than to win. Though I would like to see our run game improve I am hoping the goal isn’t to all the sudden get the running game going at all cost. If we are able to establish the run great, but don’t try to force it.

Momentum I think is more a myth based on the past two seasons. Two teams that were very talented were forced to win their last two games to get into the playoffs because they had under-achieved leading up to that point. 3 years ago the Saints lost their last 3 and Colts their last two entering the playoffs. Both rested their starters the last two weeks of season. I think the talking heads are just going with what the current flavor seems to be.

I really do not have a preference. I think Washingtons offense presents more challenges due to RG3 being a more polished passer than Wilson or Ponder. I also see them having more perimeter weapons. Defensively the Seahawks scare me with Bryant getting a push inside against Konz. Carolina, Tampa, and Detroit at times were tough with the interior getting a push into the pocket. Minnesota is pretty stout defensively, however I do not think they natch up as well with our offense. I am one of the few that I know who is expecting a visit from the Redskins I am also one of the few who wants Green Bay should we make it to the NFC Championship, I personally want our Falcons to have to beat them to go to New Orleans.

Just some food for thought also. With all the talk of Seattle they are11-2 outdoors this year with losses at SF and Miami. They are 0-3 indoors.

Mike, they will also have to spend the week on the east coast. I’ll say this, if these guys, with a rookin QB, can travel 3000 miles and beat the Skins, then hang out for a week, and come to the Dome and beat us….I might just give up.

But the only time they did travel to the EC, Miami beat them.

Mike

5:17 pm

As long as they do not do what the 08 Cardinals did, even though they only had to do it once and not two weeks in a row. The 08 Cardinals were dominated on the east coast then came into Carolina and beat them pretty handily. I am one of the few though that is not convinced that they will make it past Washington.

1) Playoff Push — Has the time finally come to bust the playoff hump once and for all? Yes. Great chance to win at least one.

2) What things are you looking for as the Falcons come out next Sunday? Good rowdy home crowd. Come out strong early. All 3 losses they were behind early

3) Do you genuinely feel that lessons have been learned by Mike Smith? Hopefully.

4) What to make of momentum: reality or myth? Myth

5) Nervous, anxious, or confident for playoff game? All of them

6) Are Falcons biggest underdogs in all of playoffs? No but they get little respect. Going to have to earn respect.

7) Which offense do you think will show up: stellar or clunker? Stellar although many games we have seen both

8.) Will the defense be ready to stop the run? Yes but bigger question is can Turner run and if answer is no it will be difficult to get to SB. They may win one but three unlikely without a run game.

9) Preference of who to play on Sunday? Minn or wash.

I really don’t care who we play. Every team in the tournament can be beat. The Birds are capable of beating any of them if they play well. That said, I’ll be nervous, but hopeful, about whoever our opponent is. If we beat them, I project we play in the Super Bowl.

Well, maybe it is more an about how I feel about Ponder than anything, although he has played a little better of late.

I’m hardly worried about Webb taking over the game, but I would be concerned that being in the same backfield with AP that he might just do enough to create problems. Plus there is not tape, the guy has taken 3 snaps, so you really don’t have any idea what might be cooked up…but Ponder just does not scare me at all.

Vikings suffering from QB play. Their defense isn’t dominant enough to overcome QB play that is looking very average…at best.

Packers can win by being “good enough” on defense and by simply having Aaron Rodgers. If they can protect him. If they do this, he can win the game for them.

Same could be said of us, of course…

They say defense wins championships and there is a lot of truth to that. But you can’t win if you don’t score. And you must score if you are to compete.

We know this, and we found it out last season.

Speaking of that – we found out then that our defense was actually good enough. Giants scored 24, but only got that because we kept leaving our defense on the field. Even then, it was hardly a route.

We learned that a good offense is very much a defense in and of itself.

This is what I hope Smith has learned. He’s the guy who needs to have learned from the past. Koetter…well, lets hope he learns well on the fly, because he’s not been here before that I know of. Nolan….he knows what he’s doing.

What Koetter needs to do is depart from the norm (if allowed) and the predictable. Throw some wrinkles in, be aggressive.

We will need to strike quickly and often. We can play Smittyball later, though that’s not advisable in the playoffs. Smittyball works when you employ it at the right time. A one touchdown lead in the 2nd quarter is NOT the right time. It also requires that you change up your RBs when “pounding the ball.” Remember, we still need yards, and only first downs cause the clock to continually get eaten up.

1) It’s way past time for the Falcons to take it to the next level. They’ve had the talent in place for a while, and with the new coordinators, it’s time to take it to the next level.

2) Falcons cannot take any team for granted. They have to play like the team on the other side of the ball is top tier, and they have to do it for the entire game. When they have done that this year, the results have been nothing but spectacular.

3) Coach Smith doesn’t usually make the same mistakes. He might make some new ones, but he hasn’t shown regression tendencies in the five winning seasons he has graced us with. There is no reason to believe that he won’t do everything in his power to have the Falcons ready to win thhe next three times they hit the field this month.

4) I think in game momentum is far more relevant than a winning streak. In fact winning streaks can just as easily make a team complacent. The Falcons have the type of team that can shift the momentum in their favor, on offense or defense, and that’s yet another good thing to have in your favor in the playoffs.

5) It’s time, and really past time, to have some faith in this team. The past playoffs notwithstanding, I know they are going to come out and give it their all. That’s all anyone can ask for, and that’s been more than enough almost every time they’ve done it. That should inspire plenty of confidence in all Falcons fans. Why wander around with a dark cloud on your thoughts for the whole week leading up to the first playoff game? If you wasted time being nervous, anxious, negative, or pessimistic about this team all year, you missed out on a great season of good vibrations.

6) Only the talking heads see the Falcons as underdogs. I’m sure that is not the vibe inside the team, nor should it be the vibe anywhere in Atlanta. Everybody has something to prove in the playoffs.

7) It would surely be nice to see the home team humming along on all cylinders in the Dome next Sunday. When the offense is on point, this team is virtually unstoppable. But if there are a couple of bumps in the road, this team has also shown it’s ability to turn it on and turn it up when it’s crunch time. We’ll either run away with the game, or we will be in it until the final second.

8.) When it mattered most, the Falcons stepped up and stopped the run. Even the backs that put up good numbers typically did it based on a few big plays (that rarely resulted in touchdowns) but were held in check for the majority of the time. Nolan can and will make the needed adjustments, even during a game. Morris and Lynch will not be the reason the Falcons don’t advance.

9) The Falcons offense in top form is more than a match for either the Redskins or the Seahawks. The Seahawks defense is better, so given the choice, I’d rather see the Redskins. Both are read option teams and the Falcons have the defensive line, and linebacker corps to handle that. Full strength and well rested, neither the Seahawks or the Skins can beat us through the air. For that matter, neither can the 49er’s. And the road to the Superbowl goes through the Thriller Dome this year. Whatever punks jump up will get beat down.

FALCONS RISE UP!

well, the bengals/texans game was painful to watch. If I’m a Vikings fan, I wasn Fraziers head on a platter. Once Joe Webb trotted onto the field, you knew passing was not going to be his forte. If I was a Vegas better, i want Frazier fined about $250,000 for the BS he pulled. I think I’m pulling for the Skins – in a nail biter where RG3 slightly reinjures his knee and can’t play next week.

a gunfight without bullets. lol. I am hoping whomever is our opponent, we come out and score on our first possession, and that those are the first points of the game. If I see us trot the Sta Puft man out on the first play of our first possession, or really anytime during our first possession up until we are within 5 yards of the goal line, I will be miffed and seriously worried. Anybody else see the Viking offense getting bottled up by running even the great Adrian Peterson between the tackles repeatedly for gains of less than 2 yards? Didn’t Musgrave cut his teeth under MM? Glad to see Jenkins score.

dhunt – don’t know about that regression assertion regarding HC MS. I’ve seen him repeatedly try a 4th and run with zero success. Mr. Frazier sounded just a bit too overconfident that with Webb, the Vikes would advance. Without Ponder, the D could focus on stuffing Peterson – and 99 yards qualifies as stuffing – when there is no passing. If Ponder could throw the ball 20 yards, he should have been in there – injury be dammed.

Call me crazy, but I don’t want Washington minus anyone, or Seattle full-tilt. No excuses by the media once we beat one of those teams, no chance for them to slime around it. We need to beat them on Playoff terms, straight up, or we really don’t deserve it. I think the Falcons have answered every single challenge thrown their way this year, and this is going to be another step in that direction.

Man, I was actually looking forward to that Vikings-Packers game. And it turned out ot be a complete waste of time…

For a minute, I actually thought Webb could make things even tougher for the Packers because of his mobility. I figured he could open up more holes for AP because the defense has to contain him as well. And man, was I wrong…

So now the Vikings are out of the way, today’s game is the one to watch. Should be a good game. Seattle’s run defense is vulnerable. They actually rank in the back-half of the league vs. the run. That’s not good because everything Washington does is predicated on running the football. Should be an interesting matchup. We’ll see what both teams bring to the table.

I hear a lot of fans saying they’d rather play Washington over Seattle. I could care less who we play, but if we actually got the chance to choose an opponent, I’d agree with those who say that. But, I think it’s important to realize this ain’t the same Washington team we shut down early in the season. Their offense has evolved, as has their QB. They’re a lot better than they were when we played them.

But, the real question is, are we? Have we grown throughout the course of the season? After that Giants game, I felt we were finally kickin’ it up a gear. I liked what I saw @ DET as well. The game vs. Tampa Bay might’ve made some folks pause, and it’s understandable because it was another performance that we see out of these guys too often. But, I’m gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and just chalk it up to a lack of motivation with nothing really to play for.

A week away. Can’t wait.

Agree with Mike Franklin all the way!!!! We never lose two games in a row – especially in the Dome. No one gives us props, even when we intercept the elite QBs 10 times! The “great” Peyton Manning was 0-3 in the playoffs as well – and look where he is now. It is our time!!!! Bring on the playoffs!!!

As much as I agree that there is no excuse for losing next Sunday’s playoff game at home, I don’t put a lot of weight behind the previous playoff losses. This is a different team with better coaching and better players than we’ve had in the past. Also, the teams we lost to were on a roll and in some cases, just plain better than we were. The Cardinals had Kurt Warner and we had a rookie QB and a middle linebacker that didn’t know where the first down line was. The Packers (I was at this game) benefited from two very poor passes by Matt Ryan and had a better team overall without a better regular season record. The Giants had a better team, better pass rush, and were the start of a big roll through the playoffs. Again, their record wasn’t as good as ours, but they were a better team.

This year, we were better than most of the teams in the NFL thoughout the season. We are better than Seattle and Washington, but both of these teams are playing very good football. If we lose again this year, it will be because we didn’t play well, because we shouldn’t be overmatched.

What would I like to see in this game? Lots of Matt Ryan in hurry-up shotgun and not a lot of Michael Turner running for 1 or 2 yards. Our strength is passing the ball and our weakness is running it – so obviously, don’t bother trying to ‘establish’ the run.

I have three words for the divisional playoff round especially if we play Seattle.

Stop the run

If we can Stop the run and put all the pressure on r wilson or rg3 to throw the ball we will win the game.

Nolan’s disguised coverage will shut down the elite qbs that’s already has been proven over the season.

Like one of cage family already said if we make it past the divisional playoff round we will go to the Super Bowl I believe that also

My super bowl prediction is this falcons vs patriots for a billy b vs td reunion.

DHunt made some good points above. On the same line of thought, I’ll add this:

“No plan survives contact with the enemy” — Helmuth von Moltke

Old Helmuth wasn’t a football coach, but he got that right. Both teams are going to show up with plans next week, but plans are going to fall apart to some extent. Making adjustments will be critical, and the correct adjustments have to be made quickly. I’d offer that the players will have to adjust faster than the coaches, and they’ll need to jump on every opportunity and mistake.

Smith plays a fundamentally cautious game (Smittyball?), an approach I don’t dismiss easily, because it reduces penalties and turnovers, both of which can be self-inflicted game changers. I do think, however, Smith needs to have the Falcons play the next game closer to that fine line between “bold” and “crazy.”

As DHunt and others have noted, this Falcons team deserves confidence from coaches and fans. Nolan’s defense can beat anybody. Matt Ryan and Tony Gonzalez want a playoff win more than any other Falcons. Even if the best game plan comes apart, I think the players will step up, and if not, Ryan and Gonzo will win the game by themselves if necessary.

My bottom line: Falcons win. It may be ugly, and they may lose the following game, but I think they’ll find a way to win, no matter what, and no matter who they play.

Joe Fake-O is just that….fake. Above average QB but barely. Has a strong arm and can fling it. Doesn’t do great with pre-snap reads. Is even less impressive with progressions.

Big Ray

Greg Mendel,

Yeah, it would seem so. Part of it is some of the route designs we use, but as Big Lou says, more of it has to do with the QB having enough time to make a play. Play has to have time to develop.

Mike

January 6th, 2013

BL excellent point in regards to our o-line. Hard to complete passes on crossing patterns and slants when your OG is getting pushed into the QB… Or disengages his assignment allowing them to get hands in the air an tip passes.

Big Ray

January 6th, 2013
2:53 pm

Anquan Boldin making plays.

This is what makes Flacco look credible to the untrained eye. He can fling it in the general direction of a WR that is going deep. If the guy makes the play, it goes to Flacco’s credit.

If not…well, we all know Flacco completes just under 60% of his passes…

Strong arm cannot overcome weak gray matter in all situations…

IF THE FALCONS CAN’T BEAT ANY OF THESE TEAMS IN THE NFC, AT HOME, THEY a) DON’T DESERVE ANYONE’S RESPECT, b) DON’T DESERVE TO BE IN THE PLAYOFFS, and c) MIKE SMITH DOESN’T DESERVE TO BE COACH ANYMORE

I know that Smith will still be our coach next year, but if we get beat by either the Seahawks or Redskins at home, than he doesn’t deserve to be. Being skeptical is fine. But, being downright pessimistic and jumping to the conclusion that we don’t stand a chance?

Let me ask you, what’s the point of even watching the game next weekend if you’re already certain that our past dictates how we play next weekend? Might as well save yourself the time and frustration and do something else next Sunday at 1 PM.

I will say this, it is not a foregone conclusion that Seattle is going to score 50 points every game. They are gritty, and for all the discussion about RG3 and Luck, Russell might be the best “football player” of the bunch. He has Fran Tarkenton eyes in the back of his head.

Preview of Sunday’s Big Story:

“While the Ravens handily defeated the plucky Colts, and the Seahawks fought desperately in a dramatic contest with the Redskins, the hapless Atlanta Falcons failed to score a single point today. Reached for comment, Falcons owner Arthur Blank was unable to explain his team’s performance, offering only a questionable claim that Atlanta has enjoyed a well-earned bye week. While Blank’s excuse may have some plausibilty, critics rightly point out that today’s failure is further proof that the inept Falcons will suffer their fourth recent 1 & gone playoff loss next week. Blank refused to confirm persistent rumors that he plans to sell the team to a goat farmer in Finland before next week’s game.”

Seattle played like crap the whole game against the Redskins who have a worse defense compared to the Falcons. The only reason why they scored was because the Skin’s D was gassed out.

Get ready for a week of “Best defense left in the playoffs will be facing a hapless Atlanta team that couldn’t find a running game all season” Forgetfulness that the Falcons also have a top 5 scoring defense. Seahawks “big” cornerbacks will wreak havok with Atlanta’s suspect offense. and so on, and so on, ad infinitum.

I’m not having it. I wish Seattle would try to bully Roddy and Julio at the line. They will be open all day. Seahawks corners aren’t fast enough to handle Atlanta receivers. And if they commit safeties to stop the deep ball, We’ll kill them with the screen game and short passing routes. Atlanta has more than enough defense to handle the Seahawks, even if Lynch gets a few big runs.

I’m amped up!!! Can’t wait for the first in a long run of post season victories for the new regime of Atlanta Falcons Football!

Seattle is beatable.

Washington had them beat until RG III went down and the offense went away. Leaving your defense on the field way too long lets teams come back on you….a lesson we’ve hopefully learned after having done it before.

Nolan will have a scheme to give Wilson more fits than Washington did.

Our offense need only strike early and consecutively. Put the heavy foot on the gas pedal. Keep it there. Had Washington been able to do so, they would have had a chance at winning.

It’s how we WILL win. And shut those talking heads right the hell up.

Exactly JB. This year you can not point to any one team and say that is the team to beat. I know everyone has all but handed Denver Ghe Limbardi, but really how is their résumé any more impressive than Atlanta’s? Houston was the team then got beat down by New England. But then the Patriots were the team, until being dethroned by San Fran. Then San Fran was demoralized by the flavor of the week Seattle. Ofcourse NY Giants came to the Dome being the flavor of the week. To sum it up Atlanta is not going to get or be given respect. If they want it, or deserve it, then go out and take it!

Couple of notes before hitting the hay………….

We quibble from time to time about Smitty and Dimitroff and some of the mistakes they’ve made, but ignore the media elites and truly look at the respect our organization gets from the people who own teams, run teams, coach, and play on actual NFL franchises: If you’re a good organization, you will have good people hired away. Since Smith/Dimitroff Era:

1) Bill Musgrave – hired to be Vikings OC
2) Mike Mularkey – hired to be Jags head coach (I know, but it did actually happen)
3) Les Snead – hired to be Rams GM
4) Dave Caldwell sounds like he’ll be Jags new GM
5) Koetter, Nolan, Armstrong all getting interviews for head coaching positions
6) Bob Bratkowski – from QB Coach to Jags OC
7) Even guys we let go (BVG, Paul Boudreau) were immediately snapped up

http://www.thefalcoholic.com/2013/1/5/3838200/report-jaguars-may-soon-hire-falcon-director-of-player-personnel-dave

We may get dissed by the media elite, MTV Sports, ESPN, Entertainment Tonight, NFL Propaganda Network crowd, but the people who actually are a part of franchises do respect us as an organization.

D, everyone wants to be a consistent winner. What use is it winning a playoff game or two, only to go into a 4-12 funk for the next 5 years….been there done that.

Also, we got beat by 3 potential HOF QBs who have 4 rings, and 6 SB appearances between them, Green bay beat Joe Webb, Seattle beat a 1 legged rookie QB, all playoff games are not created equal. BUT, in life, stuff like that evens out, perseverance is a better teacher than false success….lets hope Smitty learns, the football gods can be cruel.

It’s time to win this game for Gonzo and everything he’s done for our franchise

It’s time to win this game for Matt Ryan and everything he’s done for our franchise

It’s time to win this game for guys like Abe, Turner, McClure, and M-Pete on the downside of their careers

It’s time to win this game to shut these major league @sshole, clownshoe MTV Sports (ESPN), Entertainment Football Tonight (NFL N) crowd the eff up………..at least momentarily

It’s time to win this game to get this dadgum albatross off our back

It’s time for this team to work and prepare like they never have before, show up with an attitude, fight their hearts out, and stomp the ever-loving dog-doo out of everyone’s favorite darlings with an arrogant, sleazebag head coach, and a rookie QB

It’s time ladies and gentlemen!

NO EXCUSES!

We’re the better, more talented, more experienced, more motivated, better coached, better prepared team that’s playing at home!

I’m an absolute nervous wreck and this week is going to excruciatingly painful.

Last one…………

Here’s my key for Sunday (at least one of them):

We should absolutely destroy Seattle’s linebackers.

Julio, Roddy, Gonzo, HD vs. Leroy Hill, Bobby Wagner (rookie), KJ Wright (2nd year LB)

Sorry, these guys may be good, but it’s still a rookie and 2nd year player. Hill is good, but he’s no Clay Matthews or Ray Lewis.

Our gameplan should be almost identical to the Giants game: make a concerted effort to distribute the ball around to as many players as possible (little to no Turner and an early, heavy dose of Snelling, Quizz, and HD). That, IMO, was a big reason the Giants had no idea what hit them. Everyone will focus on Julio, Roddy, and Gonzo. Get those other guys involved early and their heads will be spinning.

Last thing: if we can dominate the best front 4 in the NFL (sorry, the MTV Sports crowd can’t change the statement after the Falcons dominated them), than we sure as the Hades can beat these chumps and Chris Clemons will either be out or dinged up.

Really gone this time. Nite ‘all!

Yea, we have a good system, that is what every NFL team strives for, hell, what is what we strived for over the past 40 years. It is not like our HC and GM are drunk in the Airport and see Denver pick up Peyton Manning and decide to got after Tim Tebow.

That said, we are out of excuses, we are playing a team with a Rookie QB, flying out to the WC tonight only board another 6 hour flight BACK to Atlanta in a couple of days. If we can’t beat these guys, it is time to really as the hard questions.

D-3 it’s time to win for those kids who believed in Bartkowski, Jenkins, Jackson, Francis, Miller, Andrews, and Cain… And watched them lose a heartbreaker to Dallas. And stick by them through miserable years, except for flashes of brilliance from Sanders, Rison, Mathis, Tuggle, Vick, and Brooking to name a few. Yeah there were play offs here and there. Yes a magical year in 98 when we were happy to be the 2nd best team in the land. Now we have gotten a dose of being a perennial power, which is great… But that 8 year old that Drew Pearson left crying in Jan 1981 still lives in me and many others. This city is just as good as Boston, New York, Indianapolis, New Orleans, and all the others who have had the privilege of lining the streets and celebrating their heroes. I want this for Gonzo, Ryan, Roddy,Abe, Peterson, and the young guys Julio, Spoon, Moore, Quiz, And DeCoud. This city has waited years for this… and for the first time in 32 years I believe we have the group to get it done. I know there is that 8 year old out there with his Roddy or Ryan Jersey… And the Gonzo poster above his bed that deserves not to be let down. New Orleans fans were able to exorcize their demons 3 years ago… Now why not us? I will be there Sunday pouring out my heart and soul to this team that beyond my God and family I can not find anything I love more. Time to believe, and maybe if we believe our team will give us something to keep believing! Thanks for a great year birds.

I’m actually happy that Seattle is coming to town. Can’t be no excuses for a let down game, like we already beat them so we know we can, or, their QB is hurt so the game should be easy. Seattle is the team everyone is saying is so hot. Seattle is the team everyone is saying has the beast mode RB. Seattle is the team with the hottest rookie QB, in a class of very hot rookie QB’s. Seattle is the team with the number 1 scoring defense. Seattle is the team that’s been throwing up big numbers on the scoreboard and has become the media darling Cinderfella story.

So be it. There’s no reason for the Falcons to think this game will be anything but a knock down drag out fight to the finish. And every single time they have faced that type of challenge this year, they have risen to the challenge. That’s what’s needed, most especially in this first playoff game.

So I’m hoping the media spends the next 6 days talking about how well Seattle is going to play, and how badly the Falcons will perform. I’ll be here to debunk the myths, but I hope the Falcons have someone on staff whose only job is to compile those video clips and put them on continuous playback feed on every television in the Branch. I want a bunch of angry birds with something to prove roaring out of that tunnel on Sunday, licking their chops for a Sea-chicken dinner.

“NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday night the Seahawks fear that defensive end Chris Clemons tore his ACL on the sloppy turf at FedEx Field in Sunday’s win. This is a big blow for Pete Carroll’s defense, which counts Clemons as its best pass-rusher. Matt Ryan has taken some abuse in the pocket this season, and the Falcons were going to have their hands full with Clemons and Bruce Irvin firing off the edges. The Seahawks have a strong defense even without Clemons, but his loss is considerable.”

Schultzie’s top advantages for Atlanta are that the Seahawks may be tired and the Seahawks may be a bit beat up. He pretends #2 is home field advantage, but then brings up the Green Bay loss to show that it really isn’t the advantage it might be for any other team. And of course the betting line shows that the Seahawks are actually one point better than the Falcons (unless of course the betting line is actually set up to spread the bets pretty much evenly over both teams so the bookies don’t risk losing money no matter who wins.) The Falcons other advantages? We’ve faced and beaten mobile QB’s (and elite QB’s) this season; and the Falcons’ receivers. I’m still trying to figure out what exactly he meant with advantage number five being related in some fashion to the run game, which he thinks Atlanta doesn’t have, and has dubious chances of stopping.

This vote of confidence from the hometown rags paid sports guru. Any wonder the rest of the country has already penciled in Seattle for the NFC championship game?

I got one for you Schultzie; ever think that the Falcons are simply the better team? Across the board Ryan has been the better QB, Falcons have the better passing game (got to give Lynch credit for having the better run game), Falcons defense is at least as good, and Linebacking corps is markedly better. Falcons are the better coached team. Never mind. That’s too much like looking at the reality of the situation, when fantasizing about another Falcons playoff loss is far more likely to get page views. carry on…

It’s time for the Falcons to bring the wood to this young Seattle team. From what I saw of Seattle’s “shutdown” corners, they won’t be able to handle Roddy, Tony, Julio, Harry, and Quizz or Snelling. If we go after this rookie QB like we did Peyton, Drew and Eli it will be a blowout.

Oddsmakers have installed the Patriots as 10 point faves, the Broncos also (take that one! They beat one good team all year!). The Falcons? 1 point. 1. What an insult. What a load of crap. At least one writer is some what on the side of the Falcons. John Clayton has credibility as being objective.

Who is going to be in the NFC Championship Game? Even though home teams have controlled the opening rounds of the playoffs, I could see the Green Bay Packers getting a win in San Francisco and the Falcons finally breaking their home playoff problems. That would put the Packers against the Falcons in the NFC Championship Game. That’s fitting. Rodgers and Ryan were the top two quarterbacks in the NFC in my opinion. It’s a quarterback-driven league. Don’t count out the Packers and Rodgers getting to the Super Bowl.

Zoomie

Well, that was an interesting NFC game. It’s a little difficult to make much out of it, because Washington’s QB played with one leg tied behind his back. It was sickening to watch RG3 flounder around, obviously unable to perform. I lost a lot of respect for Shanahan.

Don’t know what everybody’s salivating about. The Seahawks’ O looked pretty beatable. Their defense looked stout, but a good part of that was due to the inept Washington O. Even so, Washington had ample opportunities to make plays if only they’d fielded a serviceable QB. ( I can’t believe that organization was willing to risk RG3’s health like that.)

This was the first time this year I’ve been able to watch the Seahawks from start to finish. I don’t see a whole lot from a football perspective to comment on or be concerned about. They almost seemed one-dimensional, with Lynch and the occasional escape of Wilson. The thing that stands out to me is what a bunch of thugs they made themselves out to be yesterday, and the refs let them get away with it. Their defense played like a bunch of street rats.

CMS better have a sit-down with Roddy this week. Those Seattle DBs are just the kind that get RW84 to commit personal fouls. The officiating was horrendous; did someone bring back the scabs?

Don’t fall for the hype, folks. The Sea Chicks won a game against a one-legged QB. The total point spread was 10, even after Seattle recovered a fumble on Washington’s 3 yard line. The game was strongly in contention into the last four minutes of the game, and had it been properly officiated, could’ve been even more competitive.

Everyone’s getting boned-up over the prospect of a Cinderella wildcard team led by a rookie, third-round draft pick going on the road and destroying a seasoned team of accomplished veterans whose greatest claim to fame is consistent playoff chokes. I hope the talking heads get the most out of their remaining mileage this week, ’cause I’m pretty sure Cinderella’s wobbling home to Seattle in her rat-drawn pumpkin come Sunday evening.

curious on the commentary of letting RG3 play. far too many think Shanahan gives a rats butt about his QB – wrong. Shanahan wants another SB ring, and won’t care about the body county. only reason I really root against the Skins – like RG3 – but his leg was about to fall off. he needs ligament replacement surgery. on LUCK – yeah, he really is the real deal – and as Big Lou stated, the Colts receivers – other than Wayne and even he dropped a couple – REALLY SUCK. HOwever, Luck does what Ryan does not – deceive the defense with his true intentions – does look offs naturally. Hope Matty Ice becomes more proficient at it – but, I guess if I had the Big 3 – I’d look for evidence that the primary is open too. Seattle is pretty darn good team. Should be an interesting game. I disagree with LRD – i’da rather play the Skins. Shanahan I understand much better than Carroll – Carroll is a lot more innovative.

Shanahan taking the heat for RGIII’s injury. Having gone down with an ACL myself, I would put the blame on the physician, who would absolutely know that a weakened ligament is vulnerable. If that physician is too shy to speak up, then get another one!

We have experience with teams that rely on running Qbs. For those teams, I guess it’s an exciting ride… while it lasts. RGIII is (was) the local hero. I’m glad Falcons didn’t go that direction. Running QBs take more time to develop as decision makers. They are WAY too ready to improvise with their feet. Maybe Cam will be the exception– but what is the likelihood he will get hurt before then? As far as Morris goes, I expect us to be disciplined with his read-option and scrambles. Reviewing my mental tapes though, I recall that designed QB runs have gashed us pretty good this year. Something to watch out for, anyway.

arno – shanahan was quoted as saying James Andrews cleared RG3 to play – Andrews stated he had NOT examined RG3. Shanahan is a desperate goul. Personally, I’m glad the Colts are out – that emotional aura around them made me nervous. But, Luck has a very bright future. RG3 had one – but playing on a bad leg which he could have rested and possibly healed may have imperiled his future. Russell Wilson looks to me like the real deal and Carroll can draw up some innovative offenses – even when he had Tavaris. I thought the Raven/Colt game was pretty exciting – and loved the Ray Lewis finish. Tough when you realize your retirement ready. Time stops for no one.

How do you figure Shanahan justifies leaving RG3 in the game limping all over the field? I don’t think we’ll ever have to witness Smitty playing somebody in that shape, playoff game or not. Arno

BobbyDawg– One doctor described the knee joint as trying to join a couple of two by fours end to end. It’s all on the ligaments. Simply planting your foot puts strain on them. RGIII started limping after planting his foot for a throw– then the ligament gave way when he tried to plant his foot to grab the bad hike. Oddly, just running forward is doable with a ruptured ligament. I guess Shanahan let RGIII run around a bit and thought he was okay. Shame.

I want the Oline/gameplan to give Matt time so he can have a great playoff game. He’s had it rough the last couple of years. If that happens, we win. If Seattle blows the Oline back and they are up in his face, we’re in trouble. I hope Konz eats his Wheaties!

Monday Greetings Cagers!

As I said last night, I’m going to be an emotional wreck all week and Sunday can’t get here fast enough. Really wish we were playing on Saturday again, but I guess they rotate it around or something. Put simply, we have to win. I’ve made a vow to myself not to go to the dark place, but out of self-preservation and sanity, I at least have to have a backup plan so I don’t climb to the top of my house and jump off if we don’t win. Obviously kidding a little, but not getting this one would about put me in the grave.

We’ve been saying since last night when Seattle won, there is simply no excuses whatsoever to win this game. Sure, we’ve been a little unlucky to draw Aaron Rodgers when he was on fire in 2011 and hit the peaking Giants in the Meadowlands last year, but even as good as Wilson is and the Seahawks are playing well, can you really see them getting to or even winning the Super Bowl if they beat us? I’m sorry, but I can’t and Chris Clemons is out. Aaron Rodgers may be on his way to Canton someday and Eli’s two rings likely puts him there too. Same goes for Kurt Warner who we played on the road with Ryan as a rookie and Smitty in his first year.

There are unequivocally no excuses to drop this one. I’ve said this many times, as many of you have as well, that once we get this first one, I firmly believe that we will win the NFC Championship. This first ones all about getting that monkey off your back.

Marshawn Lynch is good. OK, so we haven’t played well against good running backs this year?

Russell Wilson is a very good and mobile QB who also happens to be a rookie. OK, we haven’t played (S)Cam Newton twice, RG3, Michael Vick, Tony Romo, and Josh Freeman, who all are plenty mobile all on their own?

They have big defensive backs. OK, so we didn’t play well against arguably one of the best tandems in the NFL in Philly (Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie), the Cowboys, Broncos, and others?

They have a great front 4 (minus Chris Clemons, their best pass rusher). Remember that little Giants game where everyone in the NFL agreed that they had the best front four? Think that was like 34-0 or something like that.

Sorry, not scared by the likes of Sidney Rice, Golden Tate, and Zach Miller either.

Our receivers and Gonzo should have a field day on their extremely young LB corps.

Point is…………IT’S TIME TO GET IT DONE!!!!!!

Great post at 1:10, but I must disagree on your premise of:

“They have big defensive backs. OK, so we didn’t play well against arguably one of the best tandems in the NFL in Philly (Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie), the Cowboys, Broncos, and others?

I think the Falcons will win, but these comments right here are a little homer-ish and sets you up for disappointment. The Seahawks have a good defensive line AND corners, where the Giants had a weak secondary/good line. I am not saying the Falcons cannot score on them, but they are easily the best defensive team we have faced this year. It’s going to be up to DK and Smith to come up with a game-plan to maximize our strengths.

I do agree the the loss of Clemons will hurt Seattle and not only help the passing, but open up the run game for the Falcons, since their draft pick(forgot his name) is very slow on sweep/screen plays–Clemons was great on the run, too. The Redskins took advantage of this and I expect the Falcons to do the same.

To me, the key to this game is not our offense, but the defense–one of the worst in the league in rush defense. If we can make the Seahawks one-dimensional and force Wilson to beat us himself… he will make mistakes, which will help the momentum in our favor. He is still a rookie, so he will have a stinker in the playoffs and it’s up to the defense/Mike Nolan to help him out.

We have to get off the field on third down! I just feel that the Falcon’s defense will be the reason why this game is a win or loss, just because they will have to carry the offense for this game. I am thinking of the realistic score being 24-17(Falcons win).

I was thinking they would have blown out the Redskins easily, but the Seahawks will make this game interesting. If the Falcons stop the run, the Seahawks will lose easily and it might become a blowout… but I am not holding my breath on that.

Keys for the game. Having Abe and Beertruck etc to contain. If Seattle wants to run an option, do what everyone should do and hit the QB every time. Not up for intentionally injuring anyone (hello Aints) but the speed of Beertruck will be part of the solution to the mobile QB problem.
Plus when we get a hand on the QB ( Peters, Babs) you gotta bring the man down. If he can break out of a sack, then our DBs breakdown in coverage.
Dent will need to be a tackling machine on Lynch.
Moore is back, and he will be anxious for being a guided missile on a blitz to take down Wilson. Ane it will be crazy not for Nolan to let him loose every now and then.
Dunta needs to keep his head on straight and bring the wood without penalty or knocking himself out again.
Ryan needs to come out in the no huddle and lets wear down the D.
Roddy needs to keep his mouth shut and prove it on the field.
and we need to win one for the Gonz…. (ha)

Big Lou — So top to bottom this is the best defensive team that we’ve faced this year? As a unit, you’re probably right. But their front four is not as good as the Giants wonder-team of JPP, Osi, and Tuck. I didn’t say that the Giants secondary was good, but I have a hard time believing that the Seahawks have the best secondary in the league. Yes, Earl Thomas is a stud, but Sherman and Browner are better than any corner tandem we’ve faced? Not to mention their LB corps. If our offense can’t exploit their LB corps, than we don’t deserve to win. The Redskins marched right down the field on the Seahawks with an injured RG3.

Yeah, I was talking about as a unit. They have went against Rodgers/Brady and held them to a small amount of points, as well. And no matter what the homers say, they are great QBs. So, why would the Falcons be different? The most points scored on the Seahawks was 28 points by the Lions, I believe.

I’m not saying we won’t score, but to be dismissive of the Seahawks is also hubris. They are a good football team.

Also, they(Redskins) marched down the field with an effective running game, which we don’t have. See what happened to Cousins after they were forced to pass? That’s why our defense is got to have a great game; to prevent the Falcons to go pure passing.

Afternoon Cage – Well, here we are…

this is the week we have all waited for since the 24-2 embarassment. Regardless of your Cage ilk (pollyanna, skeptic, realist, or homer), don’t kid yourself… every single true Cager has waited for this week for a long, hard year. Furtehr, I submit most of us have waited for it fearfully. I certainly have.

This is where we wanted to be… and at the same time, this is where we dread being. Until we win this first game, we may never TRULY believe in our hearts that this team can be what we hope they can be.

I went into the weekend hoping for the Vikes and Skins. I wanted the easiest path to the big game. I’ve always wanted my teams to get the most favorable draws. But I can honestly say, that for the first time, I no longer feel that way. It happened when RGIII blew up his hampered knee. when I realized, yep it’s Seattle, then probably Green Bay then the Broncos or Patriots…

And said to myself… Good! D@manit! GOOD!

I’m tired of hoping and wishing and praying and being fearful of this team ripping my heart out and using it as sausuge casing.

It is TIME! I want every hot, explosive, better, stronger, highly ranked, statistically superior, media lovefest team there is. I wanted the rookie of the year, OPY, DPY, every hall of fame QB there is. Bring the entire arsenal against this team…

I want to win. I want Mike Smith to get his troops ready and I want them to finally unleash holy hell on every team tey face. I want and epic run through a championship that will stun ESPN so badly they’ll have to air X – Games reruns while they regroup.

In short, I’m sick of it and I’m not taking it anymore. So I fear no team and I shirk no challenge.

There are no more excuses… JUST eFFING WIN!

Watching the games yesterday just confirmed what I have always thought, playoff football is just still just football.

I watched all 4 games, all 4 winners played rather uninspired. I did not see boldness in Houston coaching kicking one red zone field goal after the next, I did not see a superior scheme in Joe Flacco closing his eyes and heaving the ball as far as he could. I did not see Green Bay having to overcome the greatness of Joe Webb. I did not see a hot team in Seattle refusing to lose…..except for Anquan Bolden, the Ravens pass rush and ironically enough, Andrew Luck, I just saw the same knock down, drag out, last man standing football I have seen for 16 weeks.

My point? Smitty and the Falcons just needs to do what they do, be themselves, there is a reason we are the number #1 seed, I hope they don’t think they have to change something to win a game.

I think Gonzo is gonna eat up those rookie linebackers…I am taking the point.

I go back and look, and Seattle played 3 good passing offenses, Green Bay, New England, and Detroit. Green Bay had real offensive line issues. Detroit put up 28….The only game that really impressed me was the New England game….But it was not as impressive as what we did the the Giants.

But if we don’t win, it is because we have some mental block, all this talk has gotten into their heads.

In their past five wins the Seahawks averaged 6 more minutes of possession than opponents. Worse case scenario, they eat up chunks of time against us like they did against WSH in the 2nd quarter. Cam had success against us doing just that– excruciatingly long possessions, mixing in designed QB runs along with his read-options. If the Seahawks do have success with the clock, it is all the more important that we do not waste possessions. If I see us trying to establish Turner, go three and out– I will beat D3 jumping off the roof of my house.

That being said, I do try to keep up with the cage, and I love my cage brethren, so 1st off, congrats to the Howling Owls in the Bird Cage FFL, you won in one of the most competitive seasons we have ever had.

On to the birds, are Giants fans everywhere or what, might sound off topic but these New Yorkers seem to multiply more then a Gremlin sprayed down with a water hose. But seriously, no matter what the Giants do, if they make the playoffs there a playoff favorite, which is completely the opposite of the Falcons. Use to be a time back in the day, that if the Falcons just made the playoffs, as a Falcons fan you were excited, that day has come and gone. The Falcons set out to raise their level of play, along with that they set out to raise fan expectations, mission accomplished, now reward us for the trust we have, now prove to us that all these so called naysayers are wrong, rise up means nothing if the birds are unwilling to do, I trust that they will.

BL- commenting on your 1:53 post. A couple of points you hit on that I think is huge is getting off the field and making Seattle one dimensional. Those two kind of go hand in hand. To do this I think three things need to happen. 1) Atlanta needs to play with a lead. Not saying they can’t come back, but maintaining a two score lead plays into the hands of our offense. 2) win on 1st down. If I were Pete Carroll I would want a game plan that would enable my team to creat 3-4 extended drives. Winning on 1st down creates 2nd and 3rd and longs which favors our defense. 3) keep the crowd in the game. This is on the team not to be vanilla or flat, and the crowd to be in the Dome , back in their seats after the 1/2, and bringing the noise. Would be nice to see some false starts and delay of games. To me there are three keys on offense 1) avoid negative plays… Runs for loss, sacks, and penalties. This will depend highly on how Konz holds up inside, along with player discipline, and play calling. 2) no turn overs. Seattle the last few games if the year made a living off turnovers. They weren’t putting up 50+ by accumulating 500 yards of offense. 3) convert short yardage opportunities. This ties in with #1 for defense. Inside the 10 convert TD’s not FG’s. I do like Gonzo against their LB’s.

One more point team as a whole… You are who you are. Don’t abandon your strengths to play to their weakness. If the run is there and you find success great, but you are a pass team 1st.

That being said…GO FALCONS!!! We know who the superior team is. Make that statement on the field!

Let the voices of the naysayers become ragged and parched with their discounting of our beloved Falcons chances against the Seahawks. Let them extoll the virtues of the Sea-ducks, all puffed up and full of their own ego, with their makeup on and nary a hair out of place. Let the charlatans, prognosticators and pretenders amaze and astound the mobs with their hyperbole and flash. The Falcons will serve up a win for them to have with their dinner of humble pie and a side of crow.

Coop I am right there with you in reference to your 4:11 post. I have been like you. I believe this year unlike I have in years. I have that child like belief that I had back in 80 ( as a child if course). I am not sure that we got a tougher match up than we would have had the Skins won with a healthy RG3. I do not believe we are drawing a hot team this year marching to the SB. We are not facing a future HOF under center. We focus on the task at hand, beat these guys and go into next week listening to how we have no chance in the NFC Championship Game. I desperately want a rematch with Green Bay! I think we match up well with them and can beat them, Seattle is but an obstacle. I want GB, beat New England or Houston ( 2 out of the 3 teams the current regime has not beaten) and hoist the Lombardi in New Orleans of all places. I want the guys in the pads and helmets wearing red and black to want this like we do! I want them right now to know they are on the edge of greatness and embrace it for this city and these fans. These last few days have been great. Hearing stories from lifelong fans like mine. Some say this is it, win it or they are giving up. Think I have said that before, but I know I am to invested in this team to ever give up hope. All of you that will be at the dome come Sunday its time to bring it. Agree, Lacy looks like what Turner once was.

Difference is that Lacy is about 220-225 lbs. Turner has been 240+ most of his career. Listing him now at 247 only means he’s played at 255-260 more often than we are likely to know.

Lacy is lighter, but still very strong. Good RB.

So it begins. Still not sure how they will find a weeks worth of Seattle love and Falcons hate to fill up a 24 hour news cycle, but I’m guessing the Falcons/Seattle game will get far less press than the Packers/Niners since everyone is pretty much assuming the NFC championship is being played this Saturday in San Francisco. I want to thank the talking heads and various keyboard cowboys for all the bulletin board material they churn out this week for the Falcons.

They need to put Coop’s 4:11 post up on the wall at the Branch too. Had me just about ready to suit up and knock some Seahawks dong in the dirt!

I think this game turns on one Mr. William Moore. The Falcons need to stop the run. That means making sure Russell Wilson doesn’t gash us repeatedly to extend drives or make up for his poor receiving corps inability to get open. Spy him and blitz him. That’s where Willie Mo comes in. He will be the freshest Falcon on the field, and despite sitting out for several games, he will have had a good week’s worth of practice to get back in full game conditioning. We know Spoon is going to be at the top of his game. Keep Willie Mo close to the LOS, and trust out decent three cornerbacks and Decoud to hold down the Seattle receivers. Everybody else keep their eyes on Lynch and hit him hard every chance you get. In Nolan we trust, and I have no doubt he will have the defense well prepared for the limited offense that Seattle can muster.

Matt Ryan has had two (relative) clunkers in row in the playoffs and I cannot believe that he will come up short again. It’s time for his breakout game, and that means the offense will be humming right along. There’s not a bad play in the playbook (even Turner up the middle has it’s place), so as long as Matt takes the reins and picks apart the defense like we know he can, the Falcons should put plenty of points on the board.

Coop- Awesome post at 4:11, only problem….we STILL have to wait another five frikkin’ days! ARggg! Want to see it NOW!!!

OK, my four scenarios for after Sunday’s game:

1) The “Media are all Geniuses” scenario. Seattle wins a close one. They can continue on their Atlanta can’t win a Playoff game crap for as long as they want and pat themselves on the back for how lucky…er….smart they were for saying that all year. The Coaching staff does the typical CYA stuff and sticks to the media bytes. My personal least favorite scenario. But there it is. Chances of actually occurring: 35%

2)The “End of an Era” scenario. Seattle wins big. Mike Smith gone. Hate to say it, but at that point, there is no fixing it. Regular season counts for getting to the Playoffs. If you keep getting slaughtered in it, you might as well be the Chiefs, with an extra weeks worth of work. Ugh. Chances of actually occurring: 20%

3) The “HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHAHHAHAHAHA!” scenario. The Falcons win big. We get to ask the media for the next couple of weeks and all next year “WTF YOU GOT TO SAY NOW A$$HOLES??!!!” My most fun scenario.Chances of actually occurring: 40%

4)The “Everyone Gets to be Happy” scenario. the Falcons win a close one. We can gloat at the media with the same phrase; “WTF YOU GOT TO SAY NOW A$$HOLES??!!!” , but they can use lame excuses like “Clemons was out, what would have happened if he was there?” or “Seattle was road-weary, on even terms they are really the better team”. Or also: “Wilson is the next elite QB, wait till next year, he won a playoff game in his rookie season (forgetting Flacco and Sanchez, of course, THAT would require them to THINK.) So they don’t have to come up with anything original, so they’re happy, too. Most likely scenario. Chances of actually occurring: 65%

Can’t wait to see this play out, HURRY UP SUNDAY!!

trademark — Great post my friend. One of the scenarios is pretty spot on, which is if for some crazy @ss reason we get embarrassed again in the playoffs, I then would think that a change would be made. I know people called me crazy once before saying “why would you make a change and give the team to Nolan.” But why not? Smitty clearly ain’t getting it done and Nolan is even interviewing for other jobs. Can’t really see that happening, but you just never know.

Big Lou — Last night, my intent was not to denigrate the Seahawks. They really are a good football team. No joke. My only point is that they’re not necessarily as good as the media-elite clownshow make them out to be, which obviously they can’t help. It will be a battle, and if we can’t stop the run, it’s going to be bad.

darrell — You said this a day or so ago, but I totally agree: find any ways possible to get Julio Jones the ball 10 times. Reverse, quick screen, line up in backfield, …. hell, even quick snap him the ball, but get the dude the ball somehow.

DHunt — Good post. It really is hard to imagine Ryan having another bad performance, especially without Malarkey. He wasn’t doing “that” bad in GB until the pick 6. The Giants game he was petrified of throwing an INT and Malarkey was at his all-time worst. I agree on the spy as well. We shut down Vick, RG3, and Freeman, who are all mobile, as is Romo. IF we were to get ROFL-stomped yet again I don’t Smitty being safe as many suggest. He looked like a recently spanked child that was happy to have a job at last years presser. The crazy stuff he did in that last game could easily be seen as acts of desperation, someone that knows this is the last shot. I hate it that the last game reminded me of this ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6da9U6Xjd8 ) with Smitty playing Lt. Dike. I don’t know if Nolan will play the part of Lt. Coop, 1-7-2013 4:11pm post…priceless.

Like others, as a fan, your post should be carried to the Branch, inspiration for the Falcons, from a fan perspective.

Most of us in the cage, see through the ESPN’s…and other cesspool networks, prognosticators, for what they are, HATERS! We’ve accepted the medias narrative to a certain degree, about our team not winning in the playoffs in three tries, some of that is legitimate critique…but it’s different this year coming from the media, they are not only saying our birds will not advance in the playoffs, to a certain degree, they are not so subtle in telling us ( the city of Atlanta) not to believe, and HOPE.

Its getting personal now. They’ve moved from criticizing our team, to trying to brain-wash us (the fans). The Cincinnati Bengals, and their Coach Marvin Lewis, in his tenure there, are 0-4 in the playoffs, do you hear the same garbage directed at him, and that franchise? HELL NAW!

This team, the Falcons have to come out on FIRE, for their honor, and IMHO, ours (the fans). Play to win this game for the 8 year old boy that cried after a playoff loss several years ago, Play to win this game for respect in the National Football Leauge, Play to win this game for US (FANS).

We’ve had your backs when knowone else believed in yall, I think its time for this franchise (players) to push us aside, tell us, WE GOT THIS!

Typical homer article they wrote, like they are is SO much better physical shape and have SO much more willpower to out-muscle the other teams out there. Look, let’s get something very, very clear. The talent level in the NFL is not the same as it is in college. There are great players at every position, at top physical form, and there are a very few exceptions to that rule, they are the all-time greats, and there are a few of them playing in this league right now, and in this game.

You REALLY want to compare willpower Seattle? You REALLY think that we won’t be fighting for every blade of grass and every yard just as hard, or at times even harder than you? Try three years of total frustration. Now give that frustration the weapons that we have this year, and see what happens. (The Giants can explain it to you, if you can reach them at their respected houses-where we basically sent them.)

Good point and overall article by Schultz…….

The people who claim Mike Smith absolutely gets fired if the Falcons lose this game are wrong. So are the people who say Mike Smith absolutely would not get fired. Fact is, we don’t know. That’s one man’s decision, and regardless of what that one man, owner Arthur Blank, might say now, even he can’t imagine the difficulty of processing another defeat and where that would lead him. We’re talking about one of the most emotionally invested owners in sports.

The measuring stick constantly moves for the Falcons…first no back to back winning seasons, now they can’t win in the playoffs, next it will be they can’t win the Superbowl (if we don’t win this year).

D3

It’s kind of amazing to me how pretty much anyone associated with the Falcons (fans, local sportswriters, etc) are basically all on the same page and saying it a different way: No Excuses / It’s Time to Effin’ Win!

Regarding the quote I just posted from Schultz, I think that’s pretty spot on. Natural thought says that Smitty gets another year based on the immense success that he’s had during the regular season, and there’s simply no denying it. Like 2nd or 3rd best record over last 5 years or something like that.

But once again, I look at this from Arthur Blank and the fans perspective: how in Hades are you going to try and sell tickets, get your fan base to believe once again, when he would have been tried, convicted, and sentenced in terms of the off-season? As bad as it’s been this year, can you possibly imagine how unbelievably terrible next year would be? Hell, I’d probably just stop watching football altogether and become a full-time soccer fan (not really, but dayum). We could go 16-0 and hear that we’re the worst team ever. And even those historical statistics I did pre-Giants game says that only 1 coach went 0-4 and never won one in their first 4 tries (Jim Mora Sr.).

Look, I am not being negative nellie one bit and do think that we’re going to win. All I am saying is that for those that think that keeping Smith is a lock, regardless of Sunday, I would say it’s damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Obviously, I’m not Arthur Blank, but if Smitty were to lose Sunday (given all the circumstances: rookie QB, wild card, heavily traveled and dinged up team), I would let Smitty go, promote Nolan, and try to keep almost every other aspect of the organization the same. Yes, that may sound crazy as batsh-t, but at least I would have something to “refresh” that 0-3 mantra and see if that would work before blowing the thing completely apart.

All this is null and void of course because our Birds will win.

I haven’t been around the Birds as long as some of you all have, but my dad and all his friends have, and outside of the 1980 NFC Champ game and the 98 Super Bowl, you’re absolutely right. And I’ll just say that this game has MORE pressure because those years were seen as drops in the bucket as opposed to being a supposed consistent contender and having fantastic regular season success. Relatively, the most pressure-packed game in franchise history.

Outside of the 1980 NFC Champ game and the 98 Super Bowl, you’re absolutely right.

Notice you talked about pressure being the most at the high points in our franchise history? It is called playing a relevant game.

But yet, here we are, playing our 4th relevant game in 5 years, not having to wait 18 FREAKING years for the next relevant game.

But the thing about relevant games is the butt hurt is just that much greater if you lose….

Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for….BUT, if we do get embarrassed again, Blank would be wise to keep Smitty around next season, get back in the playoff, then FIRE him before the playoff game next year….I would be OK with that.

I hope our players are feeling less pressure than me. It reminds me a little of 98. I was a total wreck the day of the Super Bowl. Had to get 3 showers from sweating so much. By the time the game started I was completely worn out – just slumped back in my tv chair and numb (the cervezas may have contributed).

We have passed all the tests up to this point. Now, it just seems the football god will at least give us the opportunity to make up for the debacle at the dome, to slay all the ghosts of playoff pasts. I just feels right.

Actually 1980 the Falcons were eliminated by Dallas in the divisional round. Yes D-3 80 and 98 were drops in the bucket…especially 98, that year shocked the world. I agree that there is a lot riding on this game. I love the reference of. Gonzalez in diapers and Home Depot a twinkle in Aurthur’s eye. Gonzalez probably was out if diapers when I began this mostly painful journey as a Falcons fan. I would say probably riding a tri cycle. I remember my uncle throwing me the ball and I was always Alfred Jenkins. Anyone remember Joel Williams and Buddy Curry? Hopefully there are a ton of kids out there who can talk about how they remember Roddy, Julio, Matty Ice, the greatest tight end ever to play the game hoisting the Lombardi the year he retired. They can reminisce about Spoon, Abe, Asante, and William Moore. I know this team is on the verge of something special. I want it to be now. For a long time there has always been next year, well there will always be next year..but there is still today as well. I like what Aaron Rodgers said, this is when your legacy is made.

Mike, I was in HS in ‘66 and remember when Tommy Nobis was our first draft pick. We have five generations of Falcon fans and it’s about time to drop the big reward so as the first generation does not die off before we finally win the SB. We are so close now it would be great to be a kid pulling for a SB winning team. It’s funny that year after year the fans remain loyal in spite of our history. I would like to have at least one SB so that we could hereafter strive to get another one. Talk about a forty six year old virgin!! The/we fans are getting a little restless.

Man, that is hysterical. Fire him before the playoffs. “Thanks for your regular season success, but now that you’ve helped us get to the playoffs again, this is the end of the road for you!”

Mike — I wasn’t old enough to remember watching Bartkowski and the Boys back in ‘80, but I know I was watching them. The Falcons teams weren’t the best when I was old enough to remember, but I always loved the Birds. Jessie Tuggle, Bill Fralic, Mike Kenn, Scott Case, and many others. This is a special group and I sure hope they realize this opportunity and take advantage.

Greg — Hilarious. I am following my normal protocol and only reading AJC, you all’s posts, The Falcoholic, and occasionally peeking at Pat Y. He’s so up and down. Sorry, can’t bare the thought of another season where all we would hear is 0-4. As bad as it’s been this year, it would be multiplied exponentially next year if we made no changes.

JB you have been there from the beginning. I have only heard stories of the pre Falcon era here when most were either Redskins or Cieboys fans… Or so I have been told.

Falcon 21- oh yeah Bobbie Butler, that is one I forgot. Thinking he was a safety.

D3 I was also a fan of Scott Case. I remember one year him and Brian Jordan were our safeties. I do not think anyone realized how good Brian Jordan was. Just happened to be a better baseball player.

Watching replay of Washington and Seattle now. Easier to take in more when emotions are not involved. Really think we are going to have to keep Lynch from getting a ton of yards after contact. If we do that, Seattle will have a very difficult time getting anything going. Some one said they think we should start Roberson over Jerry… I have agree. Jerry finds his way to the ball, but to often fails to complete a tackle. Also watching this I do not understand why Shanahan quit giving the ball to Morris. Also Washington receivers were often open, just RG3 was unable to plant and throw.

Just counting down the days…

Sunday won’t get here quick enough.

The ‘experts’ have already pretty much broken the key matchups in this game down. Seahawks secondary vs. Atlanta’s receiving corp. Atlanta’s run defense vs. Seattle’s read option + Marshawn Lynch’s power running ability.

So, no need to get into all that.

Real quick though, did wanna mention how it’s important that these guys aren’t ‘playing not to lose’ this Sunday. With all the pressure on them, I’m sure that there will some inclination to be cautious on all fronts [for instance, Ryan possibly hold the ball longer for a safer throw]. But, it’ll be important to take this game to Seattle, not just sit back and hope they make more mistakes than we do. Ball security will be key, but, I don’t wanna see that Matt Ryan that has the look of a guy [Smitty] whispering in his ear about ball security. I want him to let it rip. Same goes for everybody else on both sides of the ball on their assignments. Let it rip. This game will not be won if we’re too timid and shy away from playing up to potential hoping that Seattle just doesn’t bring their A-game. I wanna see us match their physicality. I wanna hit them in the mouth early and often, and then force the rook that everybody’s salivating over be forced to beat us.

Fast start will be critical. We play better with a lead, and it’ll be important for us to be playing this game with one. Double digit lead would be better, because that will keep the building loud, and make it even more difficult for Seattle to mount much on offense – possibly get them to shy away from their running ways and make the rook throw it to beat us. If the game ever came to that, I’ll be ready to say checkmate. Because, no way do I see a rookie QB throwing the football with consistent success on a Mike Nolan defense.

Also curious to see how much no huddle we employ. I figure with Seattle being a team that likes to run the football, Smitty will be preaching about the time of possession battle, and as a result, will try to minimize the up tempo offense to keep the ball in our hands. Even though I think we’re no necessarily a ‘fast no huddle’ team, we tend to just line everybody up and then milk some clock at the line. Curious to see what’ll happen there.

I’ll leave it at that. Or actually, I’ll leave it at what’s become the ‘buzz phrase’ of the week.

Just eFFFin win.

Looong post warning:

Ah, the wonders of NFL GamePass (and the benefit of a Bye Week), and I’ve watched the tape of the Seahawks, and come up with what I’d like to see (at least some of) on Sunday.

The good and the bad first; The bad, we already know, Seattle is pretty damned good, offensively, and more so defensively. The good, we match up with them pretty damned good also.

Strategies that I think will work (my two or three cents worth):

Special teams: No letups. Period. We cannot afford a freak play going the wrong way for us to decide our fate. There is little margin for these kinds of errors, and would pump up an excitable Seattle team. Keep their FG attempts nice and long. Their kicker will probably be in job interview mode, so he’ll impress with the short to medium stuff. If at all possible, make the big play ourselves, those can be game changers. Failing that, stay SOLID and execute. No letups, concentrate, and everything should be fine in this arena.

Offense: What has succeeded against the Seahawks this year is the medium to long pass. By average, 7-9 yards seems to be the goal here. So any medium range passing mixed in with a couple of field-stretchers should work. The bad news for us is, the teams that had the most success against the Seahawks this year mixed in a healthy dose of the run (St. Louis, San Francisco, Miami). My strategy, play action needs to be established. Seattle is going to be PUMPED during the first 2 quarters of this, and a bit after halftime. They will be aggressive and will have a tendency to over-pursue. Their rookie DE starting for Clemons got the bulk of his sacks against teams like Arizona and Green Bay, who if they had a fleet of Battleships and a couple of Pershing Missiles would still end up getting their QB sacked. EMPLOY THE NO-HUDDLE EARLY AND OFTEN, ESPECIALLY IF THE GAME PLAN IS STALLING, AND DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE 3rd QUARTER TO DO IT!!!! Keep them on the field and guessing. Let them expend their energy. We’ll see how pumped they are after going full-tilt for a couple of quarters. Do not abandon the run. Yeah, I said it. Shoot me. OK, I am NOT a big believer that Turner will suddenly have a huge game, however, we haven’t seen a single indicator that he will. And the LAST thing we need is to run him on first down to watch him get stuffed, because that will do the two worst things to us possible. 1) Put us in 2nd and 3rd and longs, and 2) Pump Seattle up even more. Maybe the answer here is a mish-mash, or employing Quizz in the screen (or even Snelling) AS the run play. The trick is to make them account for the RBs. Seattle blitzes to bring QB pressure, and they (luckily for us) blitz their safeties and exterior LBs. God help them if they don’t change that trend, because Ryan has adjusted to the blitz really, really well this year, and one-on-one coverage against Jones and White is asking to get torched. Their corners are not so hot in those situations, I’ve seen it. They are much more effective at the bump-and-run (physical) coverage, and waiting for the rush to disrupt the QBs rhythm. Here’s where the screen will kill them. A pump fake after establishing the screen as a threat should freeze the corners and safeties and let Jones or White loose very deep. Remember, they play excited and up-tempo. USE IT AGAINST THEM. Ideally, IF we are able to establish a two-score lead, we can run it down their throats, but please, don’t use this strategy until the game is at LEAST mid-way through the 4th. No let-up, attack as if it’s tied for at LEAST three quarters.

Defense: Fun. Blitz the P!ss out of Russell Wilson. He absolutely sucks against it. I’ve seen it. He’s a Rookie, smart, sure. But STILL a rookie. Make them try to beat us with his arm, and we will shut them all the way down. We don’t even have to compile sacks on him, just harass him, don’t let him set up. Do NOT bring the blitzes from the safeties or corners, though, THIS IS WHERE SEATTLE BURNS PEOPLE IN THE PASSING GAME. Their receivers are pretty good, but nothing special. They get special when people blitz their corners or safeties and leave them in one-on-one. Plus, with a SLIGHTLY delayed blitz by the LBs, we can anticipate the running lanes and spy Wilson. This should help in the run support, which will be crucial. Seattle is going to try to ram it down our throats with Lynch. But, I’m telling you, in the Seattle losses, Lynch had over 100 yards rushing in most of them, you HAVE to harass and confuse Wilson. Control Lynch to a degree, but Seattle only hums when Wilson is allowed to pass. Turnovers would be nice, it would allow us a luxury here, but we can’t count on them. We do all of these things, we hold them around 20 points, and we can score with that all day.

Intangibles: Let’s not kid ourselves. The more nervous team this week is Atlanta. They’ve waited since last year to play THIS game. OK, maybe the New Orelans and Giants games also, but mostly this one. We need to weather the energy and attitude that Seattle will bring, be patient and execute. Stay CALM and do what we do. The butterflies will come and go throughout the game for Atlanta. In the beginning, if we get a lead, if they do, it doesn’t matter, they’re coming. EXPECT THEM AND KEEP FOCUSED. We forged the steel of our attack and defense in the regular season, and we know how to do it, and it is STRONG. Even under pressure. RELAX. No dumb decisions on 4th down. If we are in our territory or near mid-field, please, PLEASE don’t be stupid and go for it if there is a choice in the matter. Halftime adjustments will be CRUCIAL in this one, because Seattle will be starting to get tired. They play up-tempo, and they are a bit beat up and too well-travelled in the past week to keep that up for 4 quarters against a team that is coming off a Bye Week. IF, for some reason, we are out-hussled for the entire game, I say fire the trainer. There would be absolutely no excuse for that. Stay cool if we get behind, don’t force it if it isn’t there, but PUT THE OFFENSE IN MATTY ICE’S HANDS EARLY IF IT STARTS GETTING BAD, THAT MEANS THE PLAN ISN’T WORKING; AND HE CAN IMPROVISE BETTER THAN ALMOST ANYONE IN THE NFL. IF we get the lead, PRESS IT. TAKE THEM WHERE THEY DO NOT WANT TO GO, WHERE THEY HAVE NO CHANCE TO BREATHE OR GET BACK INTO IT. GOING CONSERVATIVE IN THIS CASE MEANS WE’RE SATISFIED, AND I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I WON’T BE SATISFIED UNTIL I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THE “W” IS NOTCHED IN OUR BELT!!

All that being said, I like our match-ups. I think we have the advantage in the QB, TE, WR, LB, CB and K positions. They have it in RB and D-Line. The O-Lines are a wash. The Coaching and Motivation remains to be seen.

Later, Cage!!

Had to come over here for shelter. The Seattle trolls found the other AJC blogs, and true-to-form for sea gulls, they’re over there flapping, squawking, and crapping all over the joint.

“. . . I don’t wanna see that Matt Ryan that has the look of a guy [Smitty] whispering in his ear about ball security. I want him to let it rip. Same goes for everybody else on both sides of the ball on their assignments. Let it rip.”

“On their assignments” is a foot-stomper. When Washington effectively clogged up all the holes in Seattle’s run zone, Lynch and Turbin gashed them by doing a 180 and shooting out the back side. The Falcons have to keep that back door closed. In addition, the read-option depends on O-line movement and a hard-crashing defense, or a defense that stays spread out. Washington shut down the read-option by hitting both the RB and the QB every time.

The Falcons D loves to play loose, all-out, and fly to the ball, but they’re going to have be disciplined and patient in this game. If the Falcons keep Wilson in the pocket and force him to throw, good things are going to happen for Atlanta. Hopefully, when watching that NFL Rewind, you noticed how uncomfortable Wilson was when he wasn’t able to unload the ball on his first read. Take away the run, don’t let them grind down the defense, and Seattle will lose this game.

Yeah, I read that article about how the Sea Gulls think they’re tougher than everybody else. Hubris. Looks like the young team is buying into their hype. Bad for them, good for us!

Another one of our executives picked to be another General Manager. That makes two in two consecutive years. For all those that think TD is attached to the hip with Smitty, I have vehemently disagree. Coaching is one thing, and yes the Jags hired Malarkey, but when you’re top two assistants get raided in two consecutive years, that means you’re doing something right. Smitty’s top two: one got hired as a head coach (yeah, I don’t get it either) and the other is now out of a job (at least to my knowledge).

Great post! Also add to the fact that nobody believes in the Falcons really(except for John Clayton). Everyone is saying that the Falcons will lose and Stephen A Smith only picked them out of spite. If the Falcons can’t win this one, they’ll never win with this group. Everything is stacked in their favor for motivation:

-Nobody really believes in them(even our own journalists).
-Seahawks team is clearly arrogant and dismissive.
-0-3 record in the playoffs creates ‘pressure’ on Matt Ryan/Mike Smith. Well, pressure creates diamonds… which will be on their Superbowl rings if they silence the haters
-Asante was pretty much called washed up by Philly, and with the passing of his Mother… he will be ready to prove a point
-Matt Ryan/Mike Smith are called regular season warriors. With the combination of the new coordinators and MVP play(easily ignored by the media) by the Ice Man, I just think they are ready to prove a point.

I know a lot of this has to do with agencies like StubHub and such buying a lot of tickets and such, but at the same time, this is another sign that I think Smitty is actually on the hot seat for Sunday. I’ll just give you my viewpoint as a 5 year season ticket holder. We had the opportunity to buy playoffs tickets and, first and foremost, we really didn’t have the dough to shell out for tickets that were double their regular season price. So that’s mostly the underlying reason. However……..

I can’t say that the Debacle in the Dome experience (one of the worst moments in my entire sports-following life, if not the worst) didn’t have at least part to do with it. Some may say that being a coward in refusing to support your team, but I take losses so personally (at least I used to) that it really messed me up for a long while. It took a good little chunk of time to get back to normal. Seeing that in person after having such a great regular season made me angry, pissed, depressed, crazy, (add any bad adjective in here) for a while. It wasn’t the losing, but it was the utter destruction that occurred and how flat-out embarrassed we were.

The point I’m trying to make in all this is that there’s probably a lot of season ticket holders that share my opinion. Many, like me, was likely due to the money aspect, but if I couldn’t live without going I could have used like my next 3 birthdays and Christmases if I wanted to. In other words, the Falcons, specifically Smitty, have to prove to me that they can get it done in the playoffs (at least once) before I feel comfortable forking over that amount of dough for that product. I, like tens of thousands of others have proven that we’re loyal customers by re-upping each year during the season, even when financially it’s probably not in our best interest (two teachers salaries), but we love the Birds and the experience so much that it’s worth it. However, Smitty has to prove that he can win in the postseason at least once before it tips the balance of cost vs. reward. I’m sure that sounds selfish, but when talking about money in this economy for a entertainment, leisure activity, this year wasn’t worth it to me and my family.

Through all the above rambling, my underlying point is that, as evidenced by 9,000 season ticket holders deciding to pass on playoff tickets, Smitty has no room for error in my opinion. A loss will almost force Blank to make a financial decision regarding Smith and his inability to win in the postseason if we come up short Sunday.

This is all for naught of course because we will win on Sunday!

One of the advantages, along with a chance to get players some rest, during the bye week is the extra opportunity to prepare for the next opponent. While the Falcons didn’t find out who they’d play until around 8 p.m. ET Sunday, the coaching staff was hard at work last week preparing for all three of the possible opponents.

http://blog.atlantafalcons.com/jayadams/2013/01/07/extra-day-helps-falcons-in-preparations/

Music to my ears, because I thought I read something that said they couldn’t or wouldn’t try to prepare for 3 different opponents.

trademark — D@mn fine post at 8:18 am. That looks like a helluva scouting report right there. I agree and I’ll just add one thing: Tony Gonzalez should have a career day. If Gonzo can burn the best of the LB’s in the league, he can have a field day with these guys. Wagner – rookie; Leroy Hill – slightly above average; Wright – 2nd year guy. HD, Snelling, and Quizz should be intentional, often targets in this game to exploit their weaknesses, much like the Giants gameplan that was the best offensive gameplan of the year.

My Fear — A small fear I have is that Smitty is going to pull one of his “we’re going to ram down their throats by God!” like he did during the Saints. OK, that’s fine, but you better have a Plan B if that S— doesn’t work, because that’s the absolute worst thing we could do, is start off slow, Ryan doesn’t get into a rhythm and all of a sudden, we’re having to try and turn it on or rely on the defense to win the game, like the Saints game. I got a bad feeling that Turner will play heavily in this gameplan.

I don’t know what it is… maybe it’s just fool gold.

But I feel we’re going to run the ball well against the Seahawks.

You know why? Clemons being out. He’s the big reason why they stuff the run so well, and a big reason why Irvin will be a hindrance to their run D. He is a great pass rusher but slow off the edge. All I know is if we run the ball well, the Falcons are unstoppable on offense. Use the first Saints game, Giants, and Eagles as examples.

Sunday can’t come soon enough!

Thanks D3! A lot of work, but worth it…and fun. I think the key stats for us are our middle range passing game is upgraded from last year’s game in Seattle, where we torched the Seahawks for 291 on the mid-range 7-9 yarders and then racked up the YAC. Gonzo might do everything you just said, but Seattle rarely blitzes their LBs and crowds the middle of the field, so he might find himself doubled a lot or in the middle of traffic. Kind of a reason why Seattle doesn’t tend to give up big games to the great Tight Ends in this league. I still say hit them on the edges, at middle-range, and then open them up on play-action/pump fakes. The lack of a running threat could hurt us, though. Turner played a big role last year in the W, the Falcons have to find a way to get the RBs involved, even if it’s screens. Their LBs have to buy that the line of scrimmage needs to be protected to leave our receivers in one-on-ones.
Of course, Seattle might be altering their tendencies and blitzing the LBs. If that happens, Tony G is going to go off. :)

My biggest fear is the Falcons get too stubborn and try to rush the ball when it isn’t there or (heaven help us), force the ball into that crowded middle when it isn’t there. If that happens, it will turn into a tip-drill and probably a few INTs. (See Arizona…ugh). Hit them where they aren’t. And since Seattle loves to overpursue to the ball, they tend to be out of position at times. But you need the skill players to capitalize on that, and let’s face it, there aren’t a hell of a lot of teams with the skill set of the Atlanta receiving core. In fact, there aren’t ANY.

Why we win (nonsense reasons) …
The football Gods will allow us to try and set things right by having us play Green Bay at home again.
They will also wish to reward us for stopping against the Giants and not furthering our revenge by running up the score against them.
Finally they will punish the Seahawks for running up scores against their lesser competitors.

I do not know if Seattle has the personnel to try this, but others have had success with narrowing Ryan’s field to dump-offs, and limiting his time. So my key to the game– Will time slow down for Matt Ryan? If so, he will make his fakes, get his reads, see whole field, and claim it as HIS territory. And as we have seen– that is a thing of beauty!

I do too. The Falcons have had some very good moments all year in their rushing attack, but the passing attack is so good, they’ve been able to live off it. But I have this (possibly way off base) vision of Koetter tinkering and testing throughout the season, making mental notes for an unholy Frankenstein’s monster he will unleash in the playoffs. It just feels like the team and staff have made a committment this year to not just a stellar regular season, but to making the post season much different than in years past.

I expect to see Dent on the field more for this game. He’s usually taken out for the n/d packages.
If we blitz up the middle it will force Wilson out of the pocket…he generally will roll right. We need to extend the play down the line to prevent him from running and force him into throwing it….away.

We’ll need to disguise our blitz packages and confuse him…he is a damn rookie after all; and I think Nolan and team will throw some stuff he hasn’t seen before. Sacks are nice but if we just pressure him consistently we should be able to rattle him enough to waste some plays.

On offense; I’m glad Clemons is out….but even so I believe we have what it takes to handle their D line or any D line after watching our much maligned o-line manhandle the Giants. The oline needs to start fast (whole team for that matter), and don’t letup until the final whistle.

2008 #2, 6.7
2009 #13 4.9
2010 #13 4.5
2011 #2 7.1 (Behind Green Bay)
2012 #12 5.7

I would imagine that puts us very near the top. Am I worried that we are going to come out flat and that our playcalling is out of rythem,

Man, wouldn’t that really be something. Normally, I’d agree that it may be way off base, but their was a glimpse of that in the Giants game. I mean, out of nowhere, we really could do no wrong. At that point, Smitty may have said, “we have 2 games vs. two crappy, eliminated from the playoffs teams (TB, Det) to get the #1 seed and bye. We’ve shown we can put it altogether when needed, let’s not go all out.” Of course, we both may be way off base, but that Giants game was probably one of the best offensive gameplans I’ve ever seen designed and executed in franchise history.

I don’t normally look at garbage, non-Falcons media, but I saw this is my google news and thought it was pretty hysterical. This is from a dumb@ss poster, Seahawks fan from a really terrible article……

It’s going to be a game of hard hits. I seriously don’t know if Atlanta’s receivers are really ready for this. Everyone keeps saying how Jones will run away from the corners because of his speed. The problem is I don’t see him with 30 TDs and 3000 yards because he is too fast for everyone in the league. It’s a team sport and the corners will have pro bowl support from the safety’s. The Falcon’s haven’t been tested like this Seahawks team so I’m seeing a power offense up against a power defense and history shows what happens there. This means it should come down to what Seattle’s offense can do against the Atlanta D. That is where this game will be won or lost by Seattle.

Really? Because so many receivers have had 3,000 yard seasons and 30 TDs? What an effin’ moron-idiot-knuckledragger. We’ve never faced a defense like this, oh I’m petrified and we should just forfeit. S-T-U-P-I-D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s a good article debunking the myth that this All-World secondary can’t be beat…….

http://www.thefalcoholic.com/2013/1/9/3852598/a-closer-look-is-the-seahawks-secondary-unbeatable

Green Bay – The story of this game was the way in which the GB line fell apart. Rodgers was sacked 8 (8!) times in this game and only ended up throwing for 223 yards with no TDs.

NE Tom Brady had a rough day in Seattle, though his stat line doesn’t look so bad. He threw for 395 yards and 2TDs (along with 2INTs).

Detroit The inconsistent but pass-happy Matthew Stafford managed to put together a very strong day against the Seahawks. He would pass for over 350 yards, 3TD and 1INT on the way to a 28-24 victory.

Chicago – Jay Cutler – a QB known for being as friendly to cornerbacks as he is his own receivers – managed to throw for 233 yards in this game with 2TDs. Brandon Marshall? He went nuts on this secondary – catching 10 balls for 165 yards

They showed to be vunerable to double-moves vs. the Redskins.

If the Falcons are going to succeed against the Seahawks, the easier road will likely be through guys like Tony Gonzalez and Harry Douglas. As well, the screen game could be a huge factor.

Exactly the point I was making, and throw in Quizz and Snelling. Those 4 will be the the key to the game on offense I believe.

What will be interesting to see is whether the loss of Clemons makes Seattle more blitz-happy…

You’d have to think with ‘the best secondary in football’ that they’re comfortable leaving those guys back there on an island. Also, with the tape out on Atlanta showing us to be somewhat vulnerable at times against the blitz, it has to be within their thought process.

I also am somewhat skeptical regarding exactly how good Seattle’s secondary is. They’re a good defense, there’s no arguing the facts. But, folks have pretty much made the secondary out to be one that’s one of the greatest ever seen [or at least it seems that way to me]. I haven’t watched enough Seattle games to know exactly what our guys are up against. But, I’ll reiterate again:

I’ll take:

Julio Jones and Roddy White > any duo of corners in the league

So, with that said, it won’t really be won on the outsides, it’ll be won in the trenches, as most of our games this year have shown. When Ryan has the time, and he’s on target, there ain’t a secondary out there that can really prevent these guys from getting theres. I’m hoping to see a decisive Matt Ryan out there. Not the one that scans the field and holds the ball and then checks it down. I don’t want to see that checkdown offense that we’ve seen at various times. We’ve gotta be decisive, and take our shots when they’re there.

There corners are average, well maybe even good but not elite. They are playing behind one of the NFL’s best pass rushes. That is the only reason they are getting alot of there stats, except maybe E Thomas. He’s there best secondary player and its mostly coming from the blitz/pass rush.

I have to agree with a couple of post stressing the importance of the running game. I would l like to see Turner able to get established ( I by no means am suggesting making Turner the horse you ride). Not really worried about his total yards, however I would be happy to see a 4.5 – 5.0 YPC average. Their have been a couple of games (Arizona, Oakland, and the second game at Carolina comes to mind) when it seemed teams had absolutely no respect for our ability to run. I think that really helped vs the Giants where we got the turn over and went out for 17 yards and punched them right in the mouth. That set the tone for the whole day.

I do like our matchups with our def against their offense. This is subject to Lynch not being able to take over the game. If Seattle gets into second or third and longs it could be a long day for the Hawks. Between the crowd noise and Nolan’s defense it will be difficult for Seattle to convert. I do expect delayed blitzes… Also there has been a lot of well deserved praise given to Seattle’s two safeties. That being said we have a couple of pretty good ones as well.

Though I am nervously anticipating this weekends game, I am hoping to be even more anxious next week.

Regarding the comments on 2010-2011 playoff prep, remember there was a freak snowstorm that
shut down the entire Atlanta area at the end of the bye week going into the game week. The light
practice sked you are mocking was largely dictated by the bad weather. I remember stories of
coaches and players sleeping at Flowery Branch, struggling to get to and fro. This year is clear sailing weather-wise and we have the perfect team to play. When we beat the Seahawks, we earn our way and put the hate talk to rest. Then if we face Green Bay (beat us in playoffs in ‘95 and ‘10), we can clean up the mess from two years back, having beaten playoff nightmares of years past: Cards (’08), Saints (eliminated us from playoffs in ‘09), Cowboys (’78 and ‘80), Redskins (’91), Broncos (’98), Eagles (’02 and ‘04). Only the Vikings (’82) would escape the clean-up. If we win out, we will have beaten every team we played this year (at least once)! Go Falcons!

We need to get Snelling in the game to slow down any pass rush/blitz–if the butter churner isn’t running well as usual. Great Thursday Greetings Cagers!

For those of us that are trying to find anything about the Falcons and the media darling Seahawks and matchup to help us get through these painful last few days, Pat Y has a ton of stuff up about the Falcons and media darling Seahawks……….

ATLANTA FALCONS

For the second straight year, Atlanta is losing its director of player personnel. Dave Caldwell has been hired as the general manager in Jacksonville. That comes a year after Les Snead left for St. Louis. Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff has a deep and talented staff in place. But it’s logical to speculate about the chances of Scott Pioli ending up with the Falcons. He used to be Dimitroff’s boss in New England.

WOW!, talk about a dream scenario getting Pioli on our staff as an assistant to TD. I have a hard time believing that Pioli can mastermind such greatness in NE only to forget everything he knows about football in a few years. I know that Belichick did play a big role in the GM side of it, but still. I think Pioli doomed himself with the Todd Haley hire. He may have been a good offensive mind, but he was an effin’ headcase and that doomed him. Some of the picks may not have been the best either, but he did draft Tyson Jackson (sorry, the guy may not be balling in the NFL, but he was an absolute stud in the SEC, hard to argue with that pick). Sure, he passed on a few guys in retrospect (BJ Raji, Brian Orakpo, Josh Freeman, Michael Oher), but there were a lot of early busts from that draft class. He drafted Eric Berry, Dexter McCluster, Javier Arenas, Tony Moeki,

We played four common opponents. Not very useful comparisons, because Seattle played them early in the year. Week eight was a long time ago, when Detroit beat them at home 28-24– but a few things do stand out. Seattle was up 17-7 in the second quarter, but their vaunted D let Detroit back in the game. Calvin Johnson had only 3 catches in the game, but Stafford still had 331 yards passing. Lynch averaged 8.8 yards per carry, but Detroit still led time of possession. Seattle is 8-1 since week eight, so maybe they fixed all their problems. Or maybe not.

My computer flummoxed there and I didn’t mean to get into a Chiefs discussion, but my point was that Pioli taking Haley and then electing to go with Crennel (who just ain’t got it at head coach) doomed him.

3lanes2nj — Welcome! Man, you got that right. I’m so sick of hearing about their corners I could vomit. Sherman sounds like he should playing for the Saints with his ignorant, trash attitude. They’ll likely find to miss Clemons more than anyone.

Now, for those of you getting a little worn out on the matchup on Sunday part, here is a VERY interesting dynamic.

Jaguars hire Dave Caldwell (#2 under TD) as their new general manager. And guess what happens 1 minute ago………..

The Jacksonville Jaguars just issued a news release announcing Mike Mularkey has been fired as their head coach.

“I informed Mike today that he will not return as head coach of the Jaguars,” new general manager David Caldwell said in a statement. “I know Mike well and do not want anyone to misinterpret the rationale behind my decision. Mike is an excellent coach and I am sure he will succeed in his next stop in the NFL. However, I must do what I believe is best for the Jacksonville Jaguars and immediately explore every avenue possible to turn our football team around. For that to happen as seamlessly as we want, and as quickly as our fans deserve, I feel it is in everyone’s best interests for an immediate and clean restart.”

Added owner Shad Khan: “Mike Mularkey is leaving our organization with my utmost respect. Mike gave the Jaguars everything he had on and off the field, and his efforts as our head coach will always be appreciated. Mike will land on his feet soon. Until then, I wish nothing but the best for Mike and his family.”

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/70197/jaguars-announce-mike-mularkey-is-out

Now, just WOW!. Here you have a guy who has worked with Mularkey for 4 years in Atlanta and the literally the first thing he does after getting the GM job is to fire said former colleague. Now that should tell you something right there about Malarkey the person. Someone you would think would have a good relationship with Mularkey fires his @ss immediately. Just dayum!

Just one more quick item before break is over…….

With all TD’s top assistants getting hired as new GM’s, this is proof in the pudding that TD is GOING NOWHERE and his not attached to Mike Smith’s hip. Sorry, when all the secondary assistants are getting snatched up all around (Panthers hire Giants #2 (good hire)), than TD is one of the best GMs in the biz…….period. Hell, I’d venture to bet that around 70% of teams would give up their current GM for TD. He’ll be here as long as he wants…….and rightly so.

LOL…that’s the reason he fired Mularkey–because he knew him all too well. Don’t think for a minute he wasn’t privy to the conversations TD probably had with Smitty about his coordinators and neither being the answer to take the Falcons deep into the playoffs. I don’t wish losing your job on anyone, but Mularkey should never been hired as HC to begin with. WTH has he ever done as a HC or coordinator in the NFL? Oh wait…he did give us four years of regular season wins. I guess he should get credit for that.

I had the exact same thought regarding Caldwell’s first move being the Mularkey dump. Quite telling.

There’s been a lot of speculation about Pioli coming to Atlanta to work for TD. I understand the rationale for you arguments, but bottom line to me is: when he got chance to fly on his own, he looked clueless. It appears to me that success in NE may have been in spite of him. I’d be very nervous about the dynamic between him and TD given that TD used to work for him.

Still, TD’s body of work is looking pretty good on balance, so if he thinks he could use Pioli, I’d trust him on that.

I have to admit, I’ve always liked Pat Y because he’s one of the few ESPN guys who’s at least somewhat objective than the others and ESPN has a whole section on the NFC South (something NFL N doesn’t). Sometimes he writes things that tick me off, but by and large, I like what he writes. He’s really written some good stuff and come up with some fine nuggets this week. Here’s another good one……..

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Seahawks will become only the fifth West Coast team to play consecutive playoff games in the Eastern time zone.

The 2007 Chargers won at Indianapolis before losing at New England. The 1982 Chargers won at Pittsburgh, but lost at Miami. The 1981 San Diego team won at Miami, but lost in Cincinnati.

The only West Coast team to win consecutive games in the Eastern time zone was the 1989 Los Angeles Rams, who won on the road against the Eagles and Giants.

Pretty good stuff for our ball club………

Ya’ll might could agree or disagree here, but I can’t remember even our own fans and own media giving as much respect to a team in recent memory. Maybe I just have forgotten, but I just don’t remember this amount of effusive, over-the-top praise in my life. I mean, reading some of these columns and articles you would think that Russell Wilson is headed for Canton and as good as Manning and Brady. You would think that Marshawn Lynch is only short of Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, and Eric Dickerson. That they are the “toughest” team and defense since the ‘85 Bears or the ‘00 Ravens. That their cornerbacks are somewhere between Champ Bailey, Deion Sanders, Lester Hayes, and Rod Woodson. They’re defensive line is as dominant as the Purple-People Eaters and the Steel Curtain.

I mean, I understand giving an opponent credit and talking about how good they, and they are. They genuinely are a really good football team. But I’m just done with the effusive, over-the-top praise. And I’m not even talking about the national media clownshow; I’m talking about our own media and Falcons related media. Enough is enough. Man up and blow the MF’ers out!

Atlanta rarely loses back to back games. In the past 3 years that the Falcons have went into the playoffs, they have won the last game of the regular season, but lost in the postseason. In 2008, the Falcons beat the Rams 31-27 and lost to the Cardinal , in 2010 the Falcons defeated the Panthers 31-10 and lost to the Packers and in 2011 they defeated TB 45-24 and lost the Giants. This year will be the first time in the Mike Smith/Matt Ryan era that the team will be going into a post season with a last game loss in the regular season. I feel that Atlanta will win this game.

Which team shows up? I’m bouncing between confidence and worry because I don’t know if it will be the early season team, or the Oakland, Arizona near-debacle team, or will it be the late season team that played the Giants and Lions, or the one that played Carolina and Tampa.

I don’t know. I know we’ve seen, at various times, a very good team, one capable of playing on Feb. 3. The fact that it comes and goes is nerve-wracking, given our recent playoff history. And that brings me to Smith. In the 8-0 run, the team was mostly playing with a ton of confidence, just balling. Then they started to tighten up and you wondered, what are they doing? Why are they getting so unimaginative again and looking like the old Turner-based conservative offense, albeit with periodic bombs thrown in (which, more often than not, were what saved us, or it was Ryan taking over at the end). Then they steamroll the Giants, looking like they have put it all together again. Then of course, Tampa, in which the Falcs looked like the clueless and inept offense of recent playoff appearances. But that was a no-win proposition of a game from the start.

I see Smitty as the common denominator here. His conservative, safe, no mistakes brand of football gets you a lot of 3-point wins over lesser teams, but damnit, like Koetter says in that SI article, most guys can’t just turn it off and turn it on. Players need to play! Smitty has to unleash these guys. He has to. Carroll has Seattle playing like that all the time, and that’s why I have such trepidation, because it’s hard to just turn it up. So, as confident as I sometimes am or want to be, I can see this being a dogfight to the last second, because we’re going to have to ramp up, and that means we may very well be in a hole, or we may suffer a lull at some point as we fall back into Smittyball familiarity.

Then again, if the team that body slammed the Giants shows up, it’s a two-score win. And I will be shocked again, and giddy as hell for the NFC championship.

Not sure what everyone has been watching (or smoking). The “great” Seattle secondary had no clue against Julio Jones as a rookie and still won’t have a clue. The “great” Seattle home field advantage was nothing; remember ATL played them (and Pete Carroll go flat-out out coached) in THEIR house the last 2 years running. Some news for the Seattle fans – this ain’t the team you lost to (at home) the last 2 yrs running. You want some evidence of what will happen – look at the NYG at ATL game; the “great” Giants were about to “begin their surge” but the ATL had revenge on their minds.
This team still has a statement to make. Keep bad-mouthing them.

Jeez, I bet ya’ll are getting sick of me in here by now……….

Geo — And that’s exactly why there’s just a tiny bit of “trepidation,” as you put it, about this game. In all likelihood, we will come out and play tough, but we’ve seen every face of this team and some have been pretty (Giants/Broncos/Chargers/Chiefs/Eagles), some have been bad (Cardinals/Raiders), and downright ugly (Panthers #2, Bucs #2). I’m like you in counting that Bucs debacle, but it was an insanely difficult game to manage. For chrissake, I’m just ready for the d@mn game to get here already.

nfcchamps — Welcome! You make a very good point. Of all the positive things that Smitty has brought to this franchise, not losing back-to-back games, is probably the best. And I think that’s what has made Smitty so darn successful in the regular season. While other teams go on 2,3,4+ losing skids, the Falcons never have. Who knows what the heck he does (fixing fundamentals maybe?), but he does something that works. Here’s to hoping he bottled up that mojo for these last two weeks.

Frontrow — I know man. You would think that they’ve found a way to time-travel some of the best DB’s in history and they’re all suiting up in that terribly tacky green and teal for Sunday. I’m just so sick of hearing about Wilson, Lynch, Sherman, Browner, etc. GAG-O-MATIC!!!!

Dude’s saying Russell Wilson is a better option at QB than Matt Ryan. Dude’s logic?

Russell Wilson: 1
Matt Ryan: 0

Right…so that’s some logic for you, huh? Dude tried saying that there’s no way Ryan would’ve led a comeback against the Redskins after being down 14-0 the way Russell Wilson did. Ok, so I get that Wilson’s a good player, but you’ve got to be the dumbest fool alive to not see there are other things that have a bigggggggggg role in Seattle’s success. The defense and the running games are near tops in the league. Marshawn Lynch is only behind AP as far as RB’s go, and that defense is ranked #1 in the league. Get real. Wilson threw for under 200 yards this past weekend and had a couple keepers, but aside from that, they weren’t as impressive as folks are making them out to be [or making him out to be]…

Again, no hate against Wilson. Dude’s a good player. But really, that’s some of the dumbest ish I’ve ever read [and I'm not saying that only because I'm a Falcons fan].

I spent some “quality time” with the SeaChickens’ fans on the other AJC blogs. It was fun.

The simple fact is that the Seahawks benefitted greatly from RG III’s first injury in that game. He doesn’t get hurt and it’s a totally different game. Seahawks couldn’t really stop him and Morris. They could only limit them…

But as you say, Wabe….Marshawn Lynch and the defense are a HUGE reason why the Seahawks even had a chance, much less were able to capitalize when no longer having to face a healthy RG III.

I think ESPN’s Pat Y made a good point when he wrote that the Falcons wouldn’t/couldn’t win a playoff game during the Smith regime until they reached the point they “should” win one. I (and Pat) think they’ve reached that point.

With no tangible evidence to cite, I’ve thought for a long time that the Falcons just haven’t been ready until now — and I’m not sure they’re as “ready” as I’d like.

Curiously, I see some similarities between the 2012 Seahawks and the 2008-2011 Falcons. The SHawks are hot, and a good team with promise, but not without fatal flaws. IMO, the Falcons have been them. This year, though, the Falcons are more mature, more experienced, more grounded.

The difference we’ll see on Sunday is a good Seattle team that will play confident and loose, counting on magic conferred upon it by the media. And that team will be beaten senseless by an Atlanta team with more talent, more determination, and a bad case of rabies.

Dome and one!

The great football minds that are picking Seattle to win must see something I don’t. I know a lot is based on Seattle’s 3 game stretch where they blew out opponents including San Fran. I can think back to last season and most teams in the playoffs judging by scores through the season looked better than NY Giants, and the season before you would have not thought a team that played in a couple of really ugly regular season games (like a 9-0 win vs the Jets) had a chance vs Philly or Atlanta. Lets not forget the Arizona team that went to the SB, but were absolutely blistered by NE two weeks before the playoffs started. Oh and New Orleans lost their last 3 reg season games. How much can you put in the reg season other than how it positions you for the post season? Lets look at last season Giants defeated one team in the reg season who finished with a winning record, that was the mighty Patriots…who in a 16 game season managed 0 wins vs teams w/ wining records. What about Denver’s reg season resume? Ok but not impressive on paper. What I look at is all around who has the team that can win. Seattle though impressive, have a defense and RB who can keep them in any game. However I look and see 4 of the best 5 skill players on the offense are Falcons. I could present a solid argument that Turner would be 6 making it 5 out of 6. O- line favors Seattle, but the home crowd levels the playing field somewhat. On defense their secondary has a slight edge, not as big as many think. When looking in context of our secondary vs their receivers and theirs vs ours, it is not quite as cut and dry. LB’s Falcons get the edge. D-line, I think this is even. ESP w/o Clemmons. Once again due to home crowd and possible road fatigue, I may give atlanta the nod here. Coaching, I don’t like Carroll but he is one hell of a motivator. Still I like Smitty, and am sure he is ready to put to rest the ghosts of playoff past. Coordinators, I think though they have two that may be using as much focus preparing resumes as game plans, I still like our guys better…

One concern I have on the offensive side of the ball is Ryan picking up the blitz and calling the right protection. I have seen a couple of times a lb or db sneaks up to the line just before the snap and gets a huge hit. Main one that comes to mind is when I thought Ware had decapitated Ryan. Another was one by R Barber coming in untouched. Of course those are two very smart veteran defenders. On the defensive side I worry about the tackling. I am sure that has been addressed a lot over the past two weeks.

One other thing listening to sports talk are the available tickets for the game. I would love 5000 more Atlanta fans to purchase tickets and show up ready to get rowdy and root the Falcons on to victory. Lets get real for a moment, those 5000 thousand if they were playing say the Redskins would have gone to 5000 Redskins fans. I don’t like it but that’s how it is. If GB and Atlanta both win expect 8-10 thousand Redskins fans in the Dome next week. The ones who are there need to be loud and louder when Seattles rookie QB is trying to figure out what Nolan is throwing at him.

This what we have been waiting for, the work week is winding down. It is time to RISE UP ATLANTA!

This is our team, our city, and were bringing it in our dome! Sorry Seattle, look on the bright side at least you are getting basketball back.

It’s not Mark Bradley doing the slamming, but he sure is giving these @ssholes a forum and not really saying they’re wrong, which is pretty much saying they ARE right………

Stuart: “I don’t think Atlanta is a bad team — it’s probably the eighth-best team in the league. I would agree that the passing game is better than it was in 2010, but from afar, this looks like the same average defense. Everyone thinks Seattle is really balanced, pretty good at everything, kind of like San Francisco last year … I think it’s a very, very close game, but I’d probably pick Seattle.”

“They were the second-worst 13-win team ever.

If he can’t run, there is a good chance that Asante gets a pick. If i’m Nolan, I tell Asante NOT to try an arm tackle with his BAD arm – in that case, shoulder tackle – and ask Asante to go ask DeCoud for schooling on shoulder tackling. I seriously doubt Turner came anywhere close to taking Quizz under his wing. In fact, I’d imagine he didn’t. After all, here you had a young RB coming in with a couple skills you lack and the HC saying he’s going to limit your touches? Heh….

SP — Where the Hades you been? I’ve needed some comic relief to take my mind off being a nervous wreck this week.

Reader — Welcome! Man, I totally agree with you. How could you frame that or excuse that? I really think Smitty is coaching for his job, or he better d@mn well be. If you’re Arthur Blank, there’s just hardly any rationalization to bring back a guy who, while highly successful in the regular season, just can’t get it done in the postseason. And Arthur Blank has said, we’re in the business of winning championships. There’s a reason there’s only a handful of coaches who have EVER gone 0-4 in their first 4 tries. Not only that, but his playoff performances have gotten WORSE each time, not better. You could argue that we didn’t get embarrassed AS BAD last year as we did in 2010, but dayum. Not scoring an offensive point might actually be worse.

D3 – As a word to the “Football Outsiders” and their stats….they have F$ck-All to do with “W”s and “L”s. If you went by these number ratings system they’ve vomited up, Chicago and the Giants would still be playing right now. But they aren’t. They’re golfing. So they’re wrong. Again. Shocker.

I might be going out on a limb here, but I think I might go with what the Big Tuna said about team strength (he juuuust might know a thing or two about winning championships, just sayin’):

“You are who your record says you are”.

The NFL is a test on many levels. It does NOT, repeat, DOES NOT, only rely on numbers. The Falcons are the #1 seed and beat every single playoff or winning team the schedule allowed them to play. Seattle is just another one on that list. Period.

Damn, is it Sunday yet?

Big Ray — Totally agree about Turner not being a mentor. Some guys immediately strike you as mentors (MPete, Assante, Abe somewhat, Gonzo), but I’ve never gotten that from Turner. In fact, it almost seemed the opposite with the whole “it’s their team, it’s their offense” pouting, crybaby s–t. And of all the indictments of Smitty, that’s one of the worst: his blind adherence and loyalty to certain guys (Turner, Malarkey) regardless of production.

I would like to just try and ignore them the way D3 says he is doing (or trying to do). But I just can’t. Part of being a fan is trawling for the latest piece of information on your beloved team. So you inevitably read all the garbage too.

I would consider the injury stuff on Lynch to be media fodder. The guy is playing, no doubt.

I have a strange calm about this game. In years past, I’ve felt plenty of angst going into a game…even the previous debacles. I just think our guys are going to take care of business.

All the noise about Seattle this and that doesn’t bother me. They can talk all they want about bringing the game to us, and how tough they are. Talk is cheap.

Pure Arrogance. Will it Hurt?

For those of you that follow college football, you know pretty well about the sleazebag, slimeball that is…Pete Carroll. He snuck out in the middle of the night right before sanctions came down on USC that HE CAUSED. Not only that, but Carroll and his teams are supremely arrogant, cocky, and dirty. This year’s Seahawks are no different.

Don’t fool yourself, they have no doubt in their mind that not only will they come down and win, but they believe they are so good that they will actually dominate. That arrogance can be helpful in situations like this……..to a point. It helps for them to have no fear (at least before the game starts) on going on the road and using that arrogance to feel as though they can compete with anyone.

However, that arrogance (not good self-confidence, but blind arrogance) is a double-edged sword. They feel as though they will come down and dominate, but when they (hopefully) keep getting punched in the mouth over and over and over and over again and the crowd is going nuts, that arrogance could lead them to take chances they really shouldn’t and that could easily lead to a rout.

From DOL’s article about playoff success. This is from Stephen A. Smith……

“Their whole narrative of who they are, perceptionally, it’s now at stake,” ESPN analyst Steve Young said. “There’s nothing that they can do from September to December that we even really paid much attention to. Go undefeated (and) ‘we are like, oh, that’s just great, but we want to see you in January.’ ”

You know what, even though I despise these type of shows and their obnoxious nature, this is pretty much spot on. And this is why, in my opinion, Smitty is coaching for his job. I would want to clarify this statement to read “Smith, instead of the team as a whole.” I just can’t see Blank going with status quo if we have another flop.

Doesn’t matter anyway, because we win.

Sorry I haven’t been around here. I am so frucking nervous I feel like I’m in a fog.

This is the worst of match ups, this is the best of match ups.

The Seahawks are young and dumb and full of confidence. Bad combination. This Lynch fellow seems to border on the “animal” species and I personally think he’s on drugs during games. I did notice however that during their last game against Washington, some of the cornerbacks were blitzing down along the line of scrimmage and grabbing Lynch by the ankles before he got moving. It seemed to stop him where he stood, much like we see happen to Turner. Hopefully our guys see what we see on video.

As far as the young phenom Russell Wilson, the Falcons have seen read option all year and the main thing to do is contain the edges and keep him in the pocket so all he can do is throw the ball or run up the middle and meet Mr. Dent. With a team like Seattle stopping the run is Job #1 and the Linebackers will be key players.

The injury to their DE is huge. Clemons was great against the run and Irvin is a pure pass rusher who weighs 5 pounds less than our fullback. I think Koetter goes right at the rookie Irvin in passing situations with Turner. They are so thin they are using journeymen. Even the DE/OLB they brought in, Chukwurah, is 33 and hasn’t been on an NFL field in 5 years (I can’t believe they passed on Ray Edwards for this guy, how embarrassing for Ray). I think Turner will have a huge day. He has been stewing all season long, the media isn’t even talking about him at all, and he’s coming into his contract year. I think he will explode Sunday, especially without Clemons in there.

The fact that these two teams haven’t met this season is big for us. That gives us an advantage, no doubt. This Sunday our guys will be FLYING, much like they did against the Giants, Saints, and Broncos. It is going to be impressive I just know it. We just have to keep it going throughout the entire game. I think the guys are ready and I also think this crowd is going to set a noise record when it’s all done. Bring your earplugs!

I’m no NFL coach, but this would be my gameplan versus the Seahawks:

Defense.

I would blitz almost every play/stack the box and make Wilson(spy in case he runs) beat us with his arm. Why? Stats with Wilson against the blitz: 58% completion. Compared to 66% with only a normal rush. I would play man on Rice with help over the top and soft on Tate. Washington failed to do this at times, which allowed Wilson to run out of the pocket or run the ball effectively with Lynch.

4 man rush will not work on this offense, unless you disguise coverages deep. The offensive line of the Seahawks is very good.

Offense.

Run the ball at Irvin. He’s weak on the run offense and getting the edge. I would focus bootlegs and screens on his side, too. People don’t realize how large the loss of Clemons is. Matt Ryan should have time to throw, since Seattle has been bad at it all year. They will have to blitz to create pressure, so Matt should throw from the shotgun to pick it apart. I would pick on the middle with Rodgers, HD and Gonzo. Then I would take shots down field with Julio since he does very well against Bowens.

It’s important that they run the ball effectively. It would help Matt Ryan from putting too much on him and also help against their average pass rush.

The ref’s are giving this game to Manning! I call BS. IF the Broncos have to meet the Falcons, and that is doubtful, the Falcons will show them how the game is played.

A ref tainted game from the start.

Disagree on that one JB. If you have watched the whole game it has kinda evened out. On that last play, anytime a DB grabs a WR’s shoulder pads and holds on, it will get called.

Flacco knows how to throw it hard…that’s his talent. No pre-snap reads, no checkdowns. Just fling it hard or hand it off to Ray Rice.

Yeah, I said it. Joe “Fake-O”…

Funny how the Raven’s special teams has a chance to cost them in the playoffs again

21, that was my other self speaking. I started watching this game thinking the Denver would win out easy. As Flappo (whom I dislike) and Co started to make a game our of it I found out Manning (whom I also dislike) & Co weren’t all they were all their record says they are.
As for your point I have to admit that the first series for the Ravens would have been a three and out if it had not been for a bogus PI call on Denver. I’m watching two teams, both of whom I despise, play for the opportunity to play another team, who I dislike more.
I do hope that GB beats SF in the next game because we owe GB one, just like we owed the Giants one. You saw how that worked out. The Falcons are playing with a vengence.
