Sit or Play? (Rick Ostentoski/AP)
That’s the big question as today’s game looms. It’s a very tough call in many regards. Do the Falcons keep their starters in for most of the game in hoping to keep the momentum going that they’ve built up the past few games as they head into an almost two week wait for the playoffs? Or do they pull their starters early on to prevent injuries and let many of the players completely heal? It’s a tough catch-22, but this much is known: Head Coach Mike Smith has got to find some way to have this team better prepared than the last time he achieved a first round bye. The Debacle in the Dome is still fairly fresh in fans mind and it all starts with Smith to have this team more prepared, more focused, and ready to play on a much higher level than 2010.

Yep, this is About Right (AJC)
As fellow Cage Member Arno said, if you say that you’re going to play to win, than you better be prepared to play lights out. To be fair, it was an extremely difficult game to manage. The Falcons had already locked up home-field advantage and the game literally meant nothing. Normal thought would have said to rest the starters, put the backups in, and try to win the game. But at the same time, perhaps remembering the Debacle from 2 years ago, Smith wanted to keep the momentum that had been built up the past two weeks blowing out the defending champs and beating the Lions pretty soundly on the road.
However, it became painfully apparent that the players weren’t focused and gameplan was pitifully weak. Add to that the fact that on consecutive plays, two of the Falcons defensive starters suffered injuries, both Dunta Robinson and Asante Samuel, and it didn’t seem to make sense why the starters were still in the game well into the 4th quarter. Matt Ryan was taking shots left and right and even John Abraham got injured and had to be carted off the field. Using 20/20 hindsight vision, it’s a little unfair to say that Smith had the wrong strategy all along, but it seemed as though Smith wanted the best of both worlds: get momentum while also not putting in 100% effort and focus. It also seems that Smith really didn’t have a backup plan in case things didn’t go as planned (see injuries to key starters). Hopefully, the injuries aren’t serious and the Falcons can use this as motivation to remember how well they need to prepare to get this first playoff win.
First of all, the normal complaint about Turner getting way more carries than any other running back doesn’t hold weight. Turner got 6 carries, Rodgers got 5 carries, and Snelling got 3 carries. That breaks down very good percentage wise in terms of what most fans hope to see: Turner (43%), Rodgers (36%), and Snelling (21%). Both Turner and Rodgers had long runs of almost exactly the same, with Turner netting a 17 yard run and Rodgers getting a 16 yard run. Both of the long runs heavily inflated both players yards per carry: Rodgers – 5.6 and Turner – 3. If you dig down a little further, however, the production is still out of whack.
If you take out each of their long runs, Rodgers ypc goes down to 3 yards per carry, but Turner’s goes down to 0.2 yards per carry. Yes, 2 tenths, not 2 yards. It’s hard to use this game as a good indicator, but it’s a microcosm of the entire season. Rodgers, and it could be argued even Snelling, simply fit better and are more productive in the Falcons new offense. What should make fans think that anything will change once the playoffs hit when over a 16 game span not much has really changed at all. The fear is that the coaches, namely Mike Smith, will over rely on Turner yet again and it will cost the Falcons at the very worst time.

Awful Injury (AJC)
Hopefully, none of the injuries are too serious, but fans wanted to scream when they started seeing not one, not two, but three defensive starters go down with injuries. First it was Dunta Robinson being taken to the locker room. Then it was Asante Samuel re-injuring his shoulder that’s been popping up all year. And to top it off, arguably the most important cog to the defense, John Abraham, goes down with an ankle injury and has to be carted off the field.
If for some reason these injuries play a role in the playoffs, Smith will get plenty of criticism in a meaningless game. Even though he wasn’t injured, Matt Ryan took his fair share of brutal hits when the OL decided to mentally stay at home on the couch. If nothing else, the two weeks should allow time for the Falcons to be the healthiest they’ve had all year. Hopefully, the players nicked up in the Bucs game will be back to good and William Moore, who’s missed the last 4 games, will be ready to go as well.
The coaching staff has to be busy at work getting as much game-planning and research on the three teams they know they’ll face between the Seahawks, Vikings, and Redskins. The coaching staff and players basically have a bye week and they need to use it accordingly. It may be tough to do extensive research on 3 teams, but they can be doing some. The biggest thing that this playoff game boils down to is whether or not Head Coach Mike Smith has learned the lessons from his first 3 trips to the playoffs, all ending in losses. Ironically enough, the Falcons best outing was the first one where he and Matt Ryan were rookies.
He’s had every experience imaginable including two wild card games on the road and one home-field advantage #1 seed with a bye week. There was a thought among many fans that Smith played it way too lackadaisical and even soft. There were clips of the players with shorts and t-shirts and laughing and having a good time at practice. Maybe that’s unfair using 20/20 hindsight form the Debacle in the Dome, but it surely didn’t help.

HD One Bright Spot (AJC)
The Falcons are set to play either the Vikings, Seahawks, or Redskins in less than 2 weeks. All of them have excellent running backs and a playmaker at quarterback who is extremely mobile. In fact, all of the teams remaining in the playoffs have mobile QBs and all except the Packers also have a good running game to complement as well. They have bowed their necks when they’ve needed to, shutting down Doug Martin the first time, holding Alred Morris to no touchdowns, holding Ryan Matthews and Lesean McCoy in check.
However, they’ve also seen times where they’ve given up a ton of yards as well, namely Cam Newton, the Panthers, the Saints first game, among several others. They actually did a good job of shutting down Robert Griffin III the first time, but he’s had a lot more seasoning since then. Then of course there’s the best running back in the game in Adrian Peterson and Pro Bowler Marshawn Lynch. Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Frank Gore, and Christian Ponder are all out there as well. Ironically, the Falcons are one of the worst remaining rushing teams left in the NFC. The defensive line, linebackers, and all the secondary better be working hard on tackling and stopping the run, because otherwise, it will be another short off-season.

Something in the Detroit game that stood out for me. It was a shot of Matt Ryan on the sidelines. Lions had just narrowed the gap to five points. Falcons had squandered the third quarter. Calvin eased into the record books. The crowd was going crazy. But that shot of Ryan– he looked ticked, agitated, about to jump out of his shoes. I thought– man he wants to get his O back on the field and grab the game by the throat. So as far as today goes– I want to see the CS put Ryan IN CHARGE. Running the third quarter waltz won’t help us get any spark for the playoffs.

Idealy, get up by 21pts at half then sit them. If they come out lethargic and the game is close, they need some momentum in the 3rd before coming out.

Hard to say to start or sit. The Bucs can be a bad team to face in this situation. Look at the way they dive for QB’s on kneel down plays. They can’t even play spoiler because we handled business so well. As soon as you play not to get hurt, that’s when you get hurt. I hope to have a decent lead by the half to get our guys out of there safely. I especially want to A Smith and Snelling get some touches. Hold out Roddy and let him heal. Put in Davis or Cone and let the birds fly.

Birds will roll today. Last year we were vying for the fifth seed and dropped 42 on the Bucs in the first half, and sat the starters in the second. We may not be blowing them out this time, but I suspect the starters will sit for, at most, half the game. Maybe they’ll be pulled mid-third if we’re far enough ahead.

Somebody ,
Not typical of Nolan’s defense, but it ain’t the playcalling. We do have starters missing from the lineup, but even that can’t be blamed for anything on the last drive.
That was all execution. We have issues with the run, which means we should be playing focused like we were last time we were playing against the Bucs. But we’re not.
Just watched a veteran Safety completely blow a tackle because he never made the effort to actually TACKLE.
Our offense….I don’t get it.
Here we are with this:
1) Horrific protection by the OL.
2) Bad throws by Ryan and equally bad routes by the WRs (where’s the separation?), along with shoddy playcalling.
3) Why are the starting skill position folks still on the field if we’re not trying to win? Because it looks TO ME like we are just trying to get through the game and go home.

Give him a shot at the postseason. It will either be the beginning of something good or the end of something bad, or so one hopes. I really don’t want another year of the same ol’ “good enough to get to the dance, but not good enough to do anything once there” if this happens in the postseason again.
I’ll be watching Packers/Vikings to see if GB sees fit to rest starters and also if they see fit to play like they want to win.
I have good feelings about our talent everywhere except on the OL (and the DL), yet both have shown an ability to rise to the occasion (like against the Giants).

They played to win the second half which means: finished strong. I could care less if they had the starters out the whole game. It’s about being competitive and they did that in the final two quarters. It’s good to go into the playoffs with snaps.
Abe’s injury, again, is all that matters at this point. Yet, if the Falcons can’t win without just on player out on the defensive side of the ball, then they shouldn’t be in the playoffs in the first place.
Atlanta is healthier than any team going into the playoffs. Asante, Dunta, and Moore will be back. Mile Nolan will figure things out.

Pass no judgement on Smitty and the rest of the CS.
If we judge them by the regular season, then their resume is 13-3, plain and simple. Would be 14-2, but we gave tha game away.
Their fate is tied to the postseason, and thus there really is not much to discuss until then.
One thing – “Abe is hurt” won’t work as an alibi for anybody. And it’s enough time to get other guys (Moore, Samuel, Owens, etc) healthy.

While My disappointments regarding this game have been dissected better that I could have done it (and more logically, and hopefully less spittle), I will offer a contrarian viewpoint (spellcheck wanted to suggest a constipated viewpoint, which also works).
This game was good for the Falcons, a smart move by the braintrust. Why, most sane readers may ask?
1) Bucks, Saints, and panthers all finish 7-9 from what I see, losing teams with middle of the pack draft choices, and some salary cap issues looming to restrict Free Agent signings (long term good tidings for the Falcons).
2) Falcons don’t give tape for their next opponent – or, what tape they DID generate today is a good sub for Charmin when shortages “rear” their ugly head.
3) The falcons got banged up enough that they will be too sore to get busted outside the nudie bar with some 15 year old smoking wacky weed, therefore providing the necessary motivation to stay home rehabbing and watching tape.
See, I’m trying.
(In the interests of full disclosure, I was sorely tempted to use the moniker F5, but the other F word that would have preceded falcon would have never have survived the blog monster.

Folks who wanted starters to play significantly to ‘keep the momentum’ got what they wanted today. As an added bonus, we got Abe hurt, Samuel banged in the head, Ryan beat up, and everyone else a full game of contact. What happened to Roddy White sitting this one out? Or Julio?
I think this game shows problems with the coaching staff, front office, and everyone else. What was the point of playing Abe today? Why get our team beat up against a team that everyone knows plays hard and sometimes dirty?
If this game costs us a playoff win in two weeks, I’m going to be on the warpath.

The Falcons have plenty of talent. That’s what’s worried me all year, despite the record. Either all that talent:
…isn’t being used properly
…is under-performing
…is being negated by untalented players
…or something else.
Why does the O-line soar one week and crash the next? When will we ever have a serious pass rush? When will we consistently stop the run? When we have an actual running game? I’d like to blame it all on the coach, but I just don’t think it’s that simple.
I DO think the Falcons will win their first playoff game. This time, they’ll play like madmen.

Welcome to the cage but you stated several opinions as facts and that may fly in Shultz or Bradly’s bog, but not here. These cage members are die=hard fans that check up on all facts.
- We’ve been talking about the need to upgrade both sides of the line for yrs, no biggie ur new.
- MR targeted Jones 6x, White 10x and HD 8 x. So HE DID target them, MR was just off target today…it happens but surely sukks going into playoffs.
- they did blitz over a dozen times today but with a vanilla coverage scheme. IE- that 40yd scramble in the 3rd qt. by the muscle hermit was against a blitz.
Bottom line, we knew THE most conservative coach in nfl history would be ubber conservative today. But in my opinion, the players AND the coaches took this game for granted…shame toward us fanatics and die hard fans!!!

By the way, Duntas’ injury is on Dunta. Once again, he goes for a high “tv hit” instead of a good tackle with arms wrapped up. Hope we get him back for playoffs but he is piss poor in coverage and has been all yr long. Hes a thumper but cares more about the “hit” than the tackle. Some of yall are reading too much into the Falcons game today…
It was disappointing they couldn’t go into the playoffs with the ‘momentum’ they were seeking, but it’s not that serious.
They’ve shown to be a tough team coming off losses, so if anything, this loss should keep them ‘focused’ and ‘motivated’ for when they’ll really need it, and that’s in the playoffs.
The Abe injury is said to be ‘minor’ according to Smitty. We’ll see exactly what we’re dealing with in the coming days. I also expect Dunta to be playing 2 weeks from now. No way a concussion suffered today keeps him out of action 2 weeks from now.
Overall, onto the playoffs. Nobody’s gonna be referencing this game two weeks from now, other than if Abe’s injury lingers. Outside of that, the way they played today won’t mean ish.

I think Nolan’s stint as a HC might have ruined his appetite for the position.
That said, it is also difficult to get such a job and keep it. You have to be on the same page with the GM (and the owner, to some extent). You have to know you can get a Coordinator that you can trust for the “other side of the ball”. In Nolan’s case, he’d have to know he could get his hands on an OC he really trusts.
He’s been through that kind of failure before. Along with that, you MUST have a legit franchise QB.
Then there’s filling out the rest of the staff, drafting….
I bet Nolan is in no hurry to go back to all of that.
One thing we DO know is he’s good at his side of the ball. Even better than his current boss…

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/86976/what-makes-seahawks-tough-out-in-playoffs
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again………..
If Mike Smith can’t beat any of these NFC teams this year in the Dome with this talent, he should be judged accordingly. I can’t say that he will get the axe, but I will say that I can’t imagine going through another year and hearing 0-4, can’t win in the playoffs for another 365 days………and I’m just a fan, not an owner who’s trying to get fans to spend more money on a new stadium that’s not needed.
I assume Smitty will get another year if we go 0-4, but think about how awful it will be next year?
Packers – good offense, terrible defense
Niners – good defense (even though got lit up for 40+ points by Seahawks), rookie QB, weak O
Seahawks – everyone’s darling, will be coming in mighty arrogant and cocky, rookie QB, still don’t believe the hype (where’s that vaunted momentum in playing the lowly Rams at your house that’s supposedly “the hardest place to play in the NFL?”).
Redskins – RG3, stud. Remember what Spoon did to him? Also, their defense is weak, and so are their receivers.
Vikings – Adrian Peterson, absolute stud and………..what else? Oh yeah, Christian Ponder. Sorry, their defense scares me none.
So there you have it folks, ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSES FOR MIKE SMITH!!!!!!!!!! We should win the next two games against any of these fools and be playing in the Super Bowl….period.

Funny thing about the NFL,tends to be a copy cat leauge. When teams scheme, come up with formulas to beat you…other teams take notice, especially divisional opponents.
The Saints were the first team to target our strength and weakness, both happen to be on offense. Saints began to chip-away at our stellar 3rd down efficiency…and they found where we were leaking the most on the offensive line (McClure, Center) and exploited it with pass rushes straight up the middle.
What the Panthers did to us was simply, IMO, the same game plan (scheme) the Saints used, but they (Panthers) perfected it, fed it steroids…smoothed the template on how to beat us. Take away our bread & butter (Roddy, Gonzales) on third downs…apply so much pass rush up the middle, Ryan will not have the time to hook-up with JJ on the routes designed for him. Julio is a great receiver…but he’s not, yet, that possesion receiver that keeps the chains moving.
If you football guru’s saw some glaring simularities in the game against the Panthers and Buc’s, simply, IMO, they schemed almost identical to stop us.
Most of you (me included) thought the team came out flat, had no urgency in the games we lost against the Panthers, Buc’s…but, when a team schemes you, much like the aforementioned teams did, it will have that effect. when a team prepares much like the Buc’s and Panthers…and our coaching staff don’t make the necessary adjustments, you get what you saw in the game on yesterday.
Better believe the teams we meet in the playoffs will try the same approach. Smith has shown he has a helluva checkers game (winning in the regular season) but, he has shown he’s out of sorts on the chess board (ie. making adjustments to counter schemes, winning in the playoffs). IMHO.

well, who here thought we went into the game with a GOOD offensive game plan? 3 points AGAIN in the 1st half, and I witnessed NO no huddle. although we eventually used the screen to offset the pass rush, it was a little late. also, we got no throws down field – hard to believe. Konz is not RG material – he now gets bull rushed on his butt pretty consistently. anybody feel confident going into the playoffs? I certainly DO NOT.

Somebody: Very well stated! IMO, teams can’t scheme as successfully against our defense as against our offense. Rapidly getting in Ryan’s face has reduced his passing effectiveness. Stopping Turner became a no-brainer long ago.
I keep on saying it — if Ryan had the same protection enjoyed by other big-name QBs (or even Freeman), we’d be undefeated, with a string of blowouts.
We’re taking the same baggage into the playoffs. By “baggage” I mean negative facets of the team that drag down its positives. On the bright side, the 2012 Birds have often found ways to win, and I think they’ll play the next game like rabid kamikazes and win it. They may not win the one after that, but I’m convinced they won’t be one-and-gone.

You got that right! It seems as though Smith wanted the best of both worlds, and once we started looking so terrible, then he felt he needed to have them end on a good note and salvage the win. Once Dunta got hurt, which was really early, he should have pulled all his guys and put the backups in. It would have done wonders for them, and we’d probably have the same result. Why not put in D.Davis and let him run around and give our opponent another aspect to worry about? Stupid, stupid coaching.

Wings – thanks for the shout out! The holidays and family obligations kept me away last week. It is nice to be missed.
I was not pleased with our effort yesterday. MR was off, he did not play well. If this continues in the playoffs, it does not bode well for our team. However, in spite of the poor showing, our Birds were still in a position to have a shot at a game winning drive in the end. MR actually made good throws on the final 3rd and 4th downs, but HD and TG got beat one on one. It happens. On that last 4th down, I’ll take my chances on TG beating one on one coverage more often than not (and Matty Ice put the ball in his hands). Hats off to good D by TB at the end.
I would feel more confident if we had gone into the playoffs on a winning streak, but the regular season is over. We have home field in the playoffs. I do not see ANY teams in the field that cannot be beaten. This is put up or shut up time for our Birds (including their coach and QB) as presently constituted. Win or go home!

I agree regarding yesterday’s no-performance, and I wonder if it was a result of general confusion. I don’t think the Falcons had a BAD plan. I’m not sure they had ANY plan at all, and that’s on the coaches.
I don’t think they knew what they wanted to do (and they should have known). Win the game? Go through the motions? Experiment? Put in the backups? I didn’t see a plan, didn’t see cohesion.
As I wrote above, I have confidence going into the first playoff game, but yesterday made no sense to me. A big first-round playoff win could be followed by a game like yesterday’s, if avoiding 1-and-done is the only goal with a plan.

One of the most disturbing aspects of this season going forward, despite finishing with the best record in the NFL (albeit with a relatively easy schedule as it turns out), is the fact that we split the games in our division. Each division team beat us once this season. That gives them hope that they are not very far behind us and that they all have a shot to steal our crown next year. C’est la guerre…

I fully expect to finally revisit Nolans ameba defense against who ever we face.
Biggest concern has to be stopping the running backs.
Our Secondary should be healthy and fully manned by then with Dunta over his head injury, more time for Asante’s should to heal and Willie Mo back and fully ready to re-establish himself.
On the O-side, Roddy has time to get his leg back in shape ( and hopefully keep his mouth shut), Julio’s knee heals up
Finally, Turner gets LipoSuction to get ready of that extra 30 lbs he is carrying and comes out in Beast Mode.. (HAHA)

Greg Mendel – I still believe that the sky is the limit IF we win the first playoff game. To do that will be tough, not only because of the significant mental hurdle, but because we will have to stop a team with a good running attack. Stopping the run has been the Achilles heel of our defense. Furthermore, to have real hope, MR will have to make more plays on 3rd down and at the end of each half. He has done that before. Better protection would help MR, but at this point better protection is probably wishful thinking. Recent history indicates that whoever wins our first playoff game will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Still hoping it is us.

Time– Yes, there were positives. Gonzo comes down with that 4th down pass– maybe we pull it out. But I don’t think so. How many dropped passes did the Bucs have that should have extended their drives? The score was closer than the game looked. The only real positive I saw was HD on punt returns.

I’m sorry man… you’re reaching. Don’t you think the Giants and Lions(who have better defensive lines) schemed the same way?
Let me break it down for you the reason why the Falcons lost:
1. They play down to their competition(which they did all year). Explains the lack of execution across the board. DeCoud, Matt, offensive line, receivers getting separation…
2. Coaches came out with a vanilla gameplan and slept walked on Tampa(hence the horrid 3rd down conversions and stops).
3. This game meant nothing.
You guys are reading too much into this game! We have seen the best from ATL. Wait till the playoffs till you judge. Wabe has been the only reasonable voice so far.
Yes. We have the same issues we had before: Mike Smith, Turner, offensive line. Yet, these issues were exponentially exploited due to lack of focus and gameplan.
This team will not be the same in the playoffs with this talent.
Only person standing in their way is Mike Smith and turtle Turner.

There should be a special exception in NFL rules exclusively allowing Atlanta Falcons RB* Michael Turner to ingest unlimited amounts of amphetamines two (2) hours prior to kickoff.
If said exception is unacceptable to the league,Turner should be force-fed eight (8) gallons of Cuban esspresso four (4) hours prior to kickoff.
If both proposals are disallowed, Turner should be equipped with the following:
1. a GPS programed with coordinates of the1st Down marker
2. a compass (in case of GPS failure)
3. a seeing-eye service dog (capable of blocking)

How about Decoud’s missed tackles that lead to the go ahead touchdown?
Call a spade a spade. The Falcons came out flat and tried to save face by trying in the second half. Problem is… they gave Tampa momentum, where they had to play perfect football to come back. A couple bad tackles and dropped passes away from a victory…

Filled up my DVR with the Falcons’ games and had to purge. Before doing so, I watched the Taints and Detroit games in their entirety, focusing on O-line play. I’m glad others are noticing: Konz ain’t getting it done.
He made two or three good plays in the Taints game, all in run support, but beyond that, went about 50% in getting beat the rest of the game. In the game against the Lions, he was OWNED! He got beat about 75% of the time.
It drives me crazy. He’s like a saloon door in the old westerns; keeps making the same mistake over and over in run support. He’s in such an all-fired hurry to get on a linebacker that he completely whiffs when trying to chip the D-lineman, resulting in a free defender in Atlanta’s back field. He’s simply getting beat, mostly by speed, in one-on-one match-ups in pass protection. Seems to be little effective teamwork with Clabo except on the occasional run assignment.
It’s pretty amazing. We’ve hardly heard Baker’s name this year, which is a good thing. The left side seems to be shored up quite a bit from last year. From center out to right tackle, the O-line sucks!
Maybe we should bring back Boudreau to coach the right side of the line and leave Pat Hill on the left . . .
Not really much on which to comment regarding the Bucs game. Guess the Pirates borrowed some of that flea dip from the Carolina kitties. The Birds better be finished shedding the dead fleas. It’s playoff football now.

Big Lou,
Let me break it down for you. I understand where you’re going…but, IMO, you’re analyzing the tale, instead of the head. IMO, the Bucs schemed us almost identical as the Panthers. Go back, watch both games, get back to me. Therefore, the end result was very simular to the one against the Panthers.
…and a little homework for you. Check 3rd down efficiency for both of those games, check how many times Ryan was pressured…and check where the pressure came from mostly in the two perspective games.
Big Lou, with all due respect, teams don’t set out to play flat…the other team usually has something to do with it. IMHO

Even the most disciplined teams come out with lack of focus and play down to their opponents. Patriots against the Jags, 49ers against the Rams, Green Bay versus the Vikings. It’s hard to motivate players to preform in a game that doesn’t matter. It explains the poor blocking, bad execution, vanilla game plan, and horrid desperation by the receivers. When you got nothing to play for… it’s hard to preform.
Somebody
You dodged my question, and proved my point. I watched all the games and the Giants/Lions did the same things the Panthers/Bucs did. Difference? Falcons actually executed and game planned those games well, where they slept walked on the lower feeder teams. Falcons have beaten the winning teams this season. That’s what matters.
Lions and Giants have better defensive lines… yet the Falcons destroyed them with screen passes, draw plays, and execution.

greg – you evaluation is correct. we saw a team that did NOT know what it wanted to do. I thought the Defense played fairly well; considering how 3 and out the O was. As others have said, Carolina provided tape on how to disrupt our team – get pressure on Ryan – preferably from the outside and inside simultaneously. I think tape of Konz shows he either takes plays off, or occasionally plays too upright – resulting in him getting pancaked. THAT CANT happen. I was thinkiing: what if we move Baker to RG, Holmes to LT and Konz to C? Would that give us a stouter line? Again, what the bleep were we thinking at the end of both halves? At the end of the 2nd half, we let the clock run out without calling a time out – the CS essentially quit on the game – which if that was the attitude, why keep our guys out there? Plus, our young DE’s NEED fing game time. Which we could have given the Octopus and Massaqua in the 2nd half. This game is the epitomy of Smith: screw ups at crunch time. Ineptitude in pressure situations. I have severe worries. The Jekyll and Hyde 2012 Falcons are alive and well.

The game was eerily similar to the Carolina game. Ryan is going to have to stand up and ask for that extra 30 again — from the players and the coaches. He’s going to have to set the tone and lead the troops, because it sure doesn’t look like Mike Smith was able to last week.

Jekyll and Hyde – Giants or Carolina/Raiders/TB? We whooped the Giants. Honestly, we knocked the Giants out of the playoffs – payback for me was pretty sweet – and, it proved what this team COULD do. I pray we avoid SMITTY BALL, or we will have problems. Spoon played pretty well yesterday – and, as the announcers repeated – the Falcons are exceptionally well coached – rarely do we commit penalties and unforced errors – the Falcons wait for other teams to lose the game; and Big Lou is also correct – we play to our competition’s level – that is a hallmark of Smitty teams. Compare us to NE – they kicked the crap out of Miami. Our CS just does not have the kick the crap out of the opposition mentality. I really do worry about Ryan not having the authority to call a timeout- as was indicated at the end of the 1st half – or, both the QB and HC had a major brain cramp (zombie coaching).

Big Lou — I think you make a great point on not reading too much into this game. It was obvious that Smith wanted the best of both worlds and evidently had no backup plan. Once Dunta got hurt, which was very early, he should have just pulled the ripcord and gone with Plan B. I guess he felt like he had to save face. Honestly, I don’t know what the hell he was thinking. On the other hand, you have to at least empathize with those who are worried to pieces about this clunker right before the playoffs. Maybe it’s good we got this clunker out of the way before the real games start.

Hey Paddy O, re: the @ss kicking of the Giants and our sore backsides from the week before. I think in both cases, the winning team made that game their superbowl. I think there are games like that for every team at different junctures throughout the year. They key is to make every game in the playoffs your “superbowl.” We haven’t found that key yet, but we have shown more promise this year of finding it than any year previous. I think we will bounce back and win (or at least perform) this year in the playoffs, IF they can mitigate the heavy pass rush we know is coming. A big if.

It should not come down to the above but it will. I wish AB and TD would send HC Smith on an 11 day vacation to Maui as a reward for his regular season record and for relaxation before the game. If he got back on the red eye Sunday morning of the game, he would not have time to meddle.
I think all of us are coming up with these funny scenarios because we are concerned about the Falcons playing their best game on offense Sunday week. We have begun to recognize the patterns of play and causes.

As I posted earlier (I think), yesterday’s unbecoming loss will turn out to be a plus (as long as injuries heal). Players have to be embarrassed. To tell the TRUTH, All the teams that made the playoffs in the NFC, are playing better football than we are.
I’ve read some comments in here within the last 24 hours that we play better( inspired) football after a lost…and we’ve never lost back2back games in the Smith era, thats all good, but, if it takes losing to get this team focused (MOTIVATED), I’m sorry, but something is short-circuited somewhere…and we dont have the luxury of losing in the playoffs, to acquire motivation for the next game (its called one and done) if you don’t have your sh!t together. Teams like the Broncos, Redskins, Seahawks, Vikings are on substantial winning streaks, wonder what keeps them motivated each week? It sure aint losing.

I think Smitty’s under a lot of pressure to win a playoff game and he’s just throwing stuff out there to see what sticks to the wall. The only plan he has is to “do it differently” than he did in the past.
I don’t think there was a lot of emphasis on winning yesterday’s game. The emphasis was on some abstract concept of “maintaining momentum” by keeping the starters in the game as opposed to resting them as in the previous 13-3 season.
Here’s what I think he should do: let Koetter and Nolan do their jobs and let the kids play ball. Too much boss has been the death-knell of many a project. There comes time when the most effective action a leader can take is to get out of the way.

I don’t think the Falcons will do well in the playoffs. And the reason is the people who run the Falcons are simply not very smart.
Point 1- Smith and Blank have never understood that the playoffs are like playing a different sport. During the regular season teams are not playing at MAXIMUM effort and you get the luxury of playing mediocre teams. This is where Smith’s no turnovers / low penalties create a lot of wins.
But in the playoffs there are only good teams who REALLY want to win and the old Falcon predictability made that easy for opponents to do.
Point 2 – Smith WILL get conservative in the playoffs because that is who he is. Smith is a very nice man who has never understood that ALL great battles are won with boldness, NOT with being conservative. Washington attacked the British when they least expected it. MacArthur attacked an Inchon which was a huge risk.
The Falcons are a very good football team with a very good QB and lots of talent.
But “Management” playing the starters in a meaningless game because “resting” the players in previous years shows they are too dumb to understand why they failed before and so risked the entire season.
What if Ryan had been hurt for the rest of the season. That alone would have meant end of season.
What if Abraham had broken his ankle? Why not let Assante rest that injured arm?
Again, Smith is a nice guy, I like him but he can’t be very smart in that he kept MaLarky for four seasons. Not only did MaLarky’s predictable offense spell doom for the Falcons against good teams, look what MuLarky did for Jacksonville. Jacksonville went from 5 and 11 to 2 and 14.
In their 18 year history this was their worst season (they were 1 and 7 at home).
Boldness wins and intelligence wins. Smith does not have boldness and playing already injured starters in a meaningless game shows real stupidity.”

I don know what game you guys watched, but turner was not very involved, actually the only time they looked good was when he came in he game.
What I saw was Turner being used at the right time in a game.
I also saw that the running game was NOT the problem in the game. The problem was a lack of protection and some gawdawful throws on the part of Ryan, not all of them due to OL issues, either.
Add in some shoddy WR play and there you go.
Kudos to the CS for using Turner at the right times. Because Rodgers was starting to really run it in the first half…when he got the ball, that is. Had only one run that was less than 4 yards.

“Here’s what I think he should do: let Koetter and Nolan do their jobs and let the kids play ball. Too much boss has been the death-knell of many a project. There comes time when the most effective action a leader can take is to get out of the way.”
That was VERY well said. Especially when both men are better on their side of the ball than the HC is…just sayin’…

I’m not sure there is ever a “right time” to use Turner in a game. I’m not saying that as a snark, but because there have been multiple times we should have been able to depend on a big RB to get that one, single, solitary yard for a first down or touchdown. A couple of years ago, Turner could get that yard and more. He just can’t do it anymore. He can barely get to the line.
I’ve seen Turner trundle towards the line like he’s running a marathon, only to be stuffed by the whole opposing team. I know this sounds crazy, but I’ve wondered what would happen if he pitched the ball back to Ryan at the last moment (hour?). Ryan could throw to anybody still standing up.

Lovie Smith deserved to be canned.
I have a lot of family out in Chicago, and during football season, we have the usual back and forths about Falcons vs. Bears. But, honestly, those guys in Chicago aren’t too hot about Lovie Smith. And the facts should back that up.
I read somewhere that the Bears had made the playoffs only like 3 of 9 years in Lovie’s tenure there, and that was prior to this season if I’m not mistaken. One of my cousins had told me that their record over Lovie’s tenure vs. teams under .500 was stellar, but they were as mediocre as it gets – way under .500 – against good teams [teams over .500]. They’ve lost to the Packers like 5 times in a row. And this season, there’s really no excuse for not making the playoffs. They started off 7-1 and in the drivers seat to win the NFC North, but they finish 3rd out of 4. Makes no sense.
I’d say they have more talent on their roster than the Vikings do, but the Vikings still managed to beat them out for a playoff spot. If you look at Chicago this season, they played the Texans, Niners, Seahawks, Packers twice, Vikings twice, Colts, and the Cowboys. That’s 9 games. They went 3-6 against those teams.
3-6 against teams above .500 with their only wins coming against the Colts [who despite their record clearly aren't an elite team], the Vikings [same thing applies], and the Cowboys [who are as inconsistent as can be]. Other than those 3 games, they didn’t win vs. anybody worth mentioning.
He deserved to go.

Yahoo Sports: USC shows up an hour late for bowl dinner, Trojans player cusses El Paso very classy, USC
By Frank Schwab / Yahoo Sports
Posted: 12/28/2012 09:58:09 AM MST
At every bowl game, there are events for each team to attend. The committees that put on the bowls normally bend over backwards for the teams, to ensure they have a great bowl experience. The people responsible for the bowls work tremendously hard at planning executing such things. That’s not always easy with more a couple hundred people traveling with the teams.
And, one of the few requirements of the teams is that they show up. USC apparently believes it is too good to follow this one requirement.
Last night, Duke Keith of the El Paso Times tweeted that USC was an hour late for the Sheriff’s Posse Dinner, so Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson took his team and left. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the obvious, that the Yellow Jackets were apparently not pleased at the snub. The AJC and Los Angeles Daily News reported that the Trojans were actually 90 minutes late for the dinner.

Just caught D.Led’s article about Smitty changing up his bye-week approach this time around.
I actually liked what I read. They seem more tuned in, more focused, and intent on cleaning some things up.
4 days of practice this week. Smitty said rather than emulate a scheme of an opponent, it’ll be more ‘Falcon on Falcon’ time. He said he wanted to work on the fundamentals of blocking and tackling, both of which have needed work all season, so it’s good to see them use the extra time to try and improve upon it.
I just like the vibes coming out of the Branch. If I’m Mike Nolan, I’m getting ready for an unconventional offense. Mobile QB with a stud back. Both the Skins and Seattle have that. I think we’ll play the winner of that game, and they do both have some similarities to their game. Tackling will be huge, so it’s good to see them stressing that.
All in all, good vibes coming out of the Branch. Stay focused, and stay sharp.

“We probably thought back then like we arrived,” Falcons running back Michael Turner said. “We thought we were better than we were. We didn’t approach the week like we should have, looking back on it. Hopefully we learn from that mistake and will be ready to roll.”
It starts with more work days this time around.
After the Falcons defeated the Panthers in the final regular-season game of 2010, players didn’t have to report to Flowery Branch for practice until Thursday, four days after the game. They then then had the next weekend off.
No wonder we got absolutely humiliated in the Debacle in the Dome. Hell, we’re lucky it wasn’t 60+ points for goodness sake. This article is music to my ears, but Smitty not’s always the best at following through on his proclamations (see Tampa Bay game).

Dear Coach Smith,
Thanks for another awesome season and being willing to admit that what we’ve done previously in the playoffs hasn’t worked. In that vein, I’d like to suggest that you “ask” your players to stay off the media interviews and “persuade” the tweeters to knock it off for the next month. I’ve noted a distinct correlation between players’ media appearances and mental letdowns the following weekend. You frequently say that you need “laser focus” during a week of practice and the media attention is too big of a distraction to tolerate with the stakes this high. You’ve already got the guys focused on fundamentals–let’s keep them that way and off the media….
respectfully,

It annoys me no end that our coordinators are interviewing for vacancies elsewhere. What a distraction that has to be for the players. Is my coach going to be here next year? They can react in one of two ways….We’ve got to win this thing now…who knows what next year will bring….or focus on the news and take it as a negative, demotivating nagging possibility that the work they’ve put in for these coordinators may just be overlooked by the next coordinator. Not for Long takes on clarified meaning….better get it done now while you have the opportunity to win.

I’ll be the overzealous homer for the next two weeks, since there will be no shortage of people who see the Falcons as woefully incapable and over-matched by whatever opponent we may have to face. Never has a number one seed been so overshadowed, not just by the other top seed, but I’ve heard that literally every other team in the NFC playoff field is far and away superior to the Falcons and there’s no chance the Falcons could even begin to compete with the AFC top seeds.
It’s to be expected. After all, the Falcons can’t block anybody. Even though Matt Ryan has taken less sacks than many of the other QB’s remaining in the tournament, we obviously have the worst offensive line of any playoff team, not just this year, maybe ever. Still, Matt Ryan did set career highs in a number of categories, and had his best year statistically since entering the league, but surely he did that in spite of that terrible offensive line. But Baker did play a pretty decent Left Tackle this year, Blalock was his usual stout self, and the other three guys stepped it up at times, so maybe they are capable of not being completely terrible when it really matters.
I’m also hearing that the Falcons have the worst defense of all the playoff teams. Those Falcons do give up yards by the boatload particularly in the run game, have evidently never learned how to tackle, and don’t pressure any QB ever. But somehow their opponents don’t score. Somehow though, that same shaky defense keeps taking the ball away, and has performed superbly against several elite QB’s this year, going an amazing 4 of 5 game stretch without giving up a single passing touchdown. Maybe as bad as they are, they might still manage to play well enough to keep the upcoming playoff game from being a complete blowout, since they managed to do that very thing over a grueling 16 game regular season (giving up 30 or more only twice on the season).
Of course the Falcons coaching is so suspect as to make what the players do virtually a moot point. Those new coordinators aren’t getting it done on game day. Well maybe Nolan is, but that Koetter guy doesn’t seem to get it. Hard to understand why they’ll spend the next few days interviewing for head coaching jobs. Well maybe Koetter is a little better than we’ve had in the past. At least he’s familiar with the screen pass, and occasionally even lets Matt Ryan throw a deep ball. But it won’t matter because ultimately Smitty is going to take over all the offensive and defensive play calls, right? Even though he has said repeatedly that he doesn’t call plays on game day, and as far as I can tell isn’t really responsible for personnel packages on either side of the ball on game day either. Well, even though he’s the winningest coach in Falcon history, that’s like saying he’s the brightest kid on the short bus. He’ll figure out some way to put his bad luck mojo on the Falcons come playoff time. He’s always done it in the past. Except, things just seem to be a bit different overall, with new coordinators, a more mature team, better leadership on the field. That should count for something right? It’s not like it’s the exact same team that lost the last two playoff games.
Well, maybe I’ll be even more optimistic after we see who we will face after the bye week. Once I figure out how in the world we ever got to the point where we get a bye week. Bet Houston, wishes they had a buy week, but they couldn’t win enough games to do it.
I guess

I was gonna say that we should really reserve all judgements and “replacement ideas” for members of the CS for after the postseason.
However, all the talk of interviews published by D. Ledd has me nervous and thinking that we will be having this conversation earlier than we’d like.
I will say this – there’s a lot that I’d do to keep Nolan, if I’m Dimitroff. Including…well, I’ll leave that alone for now.
I thought we got lucky picking up Nolan (and yes, Koetter). That said, and I’m not saying anything against Nolan…we might win out even if we lose him. It gives us a chance to bring in an even better and more expanded offensive mind. A specialist in an offense that could fit this team very well.
That said, the same thing remains – Koetter came in and we kept the playbook still…that’s all Smitty. We also kept some of the same tendencies on offense…many of the troublesome ones.
In a lot of ways, I didn’t see Koetter have nearly as strong of an influence as I saw Nolan have. There are several observations that can be tied to this.
So we’ll see.
But I’m really afraid of losing Nolan. I don’t think we can replace him with anybody that’s not a puppet of sorts. Nolan didn’t follow Smitty’s ideas, he brought his own. He changed so much. Without a presence full of wisdom and knowledge like that, we could very quickly go back to zone coverages, Tampa 2 all day long, and other stuff we don’t succeed as well with.

“E.S.P.N.S.I.C.B.S.Yahoos-2 Jan. 2013 – It’s Playoff time, and we all know what that means, we can evaluate all of the talent in the playoff field and drool over which team we would love to see in the Super Bowl. In the AFC, the top seeded Broncos really do deserve to play in the Super Bowl. After cleaning house on powerhouses like Kansas City, Oakland and San Diego for 6 of their wins, they also slammed teams that SHOULD have been in the Playoffs like New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Pittsburgh and Cleveland, just to name a few worthy opponents. OK, they lost to Houston, New England and Atlanta, but those are regular season games, and those don’t mean anything. The Atlanta game being obviously the biggest anomaly, because Peyton wasn’t really warmed up yet, just ignore that 129 QB rating he put up against Pittsburgh in Week 1, he really wasn’t ready, and if he played against the Falcons today, he’d have at least 8 TDs and a rating so high it would take NASA to count it, because, well, his name is Manning, and Atlanta really has a shaky defense, especially against truly elite QBs. OK, if Denver doesn’t go to the big dance, we’re perfectly happy with New England or Indianapolis as well. New England is a nice, comfortable team that we’re very used to praising and won’t have to come up with to many original thoughts on, and Indy would have that rookie QB in the Super Bowl and all, with the cool last name. Everyone likes to write stories about guys with cool last names.
In the NFC, it gets more complicated. The obvious favorite, Seattle, will have to win a few on the road, and it makes us a little nervous to pick them. The safest choice , and therefore ours, is Green Bay (see comments about New England, above). If they go to the Super Bowl, we’ll all be much happier. Minnesota is also OK, with the whole Peterson story and all, and RGIII is also easy to write about, because he’s a really good rookie with a cool nick-name. That counts as much as having a cool last name. San Francisco has been fading lately, and they usually win with Defense, which is boring. We’d prefer it if they went home early. Atlanta is the top seed, but it doesn’t matter, they shouldn’t be there at all. In fact, we’re going to ignore anything they might have accomplished this season, like hanging the biggest loss ever on a defending champion and beating all of the teams on their schedule with winning records, and the NFC East in total, and just talk to some players on teams that SHOULD be there instead of them. Says J. Thomas of Carolina; “We’re the better team, we know it, our 7-9 record is no indication of who we are or what we’ve actually accomplished this year,” Thomas continued as he took a slurp of vodka over the telephone from his garage in Florida. “Man, we would light up those other teams. We’re elite.” We contacted Drew Brees as well from his condo in Malibu, where he was in the middle of mowing the lawn in his boxer shorts, unfortunately, most of the telephone interview was an incoherent blur of cursing mixed with a few “Goodells” for good measure. We were able to get from it though that New Orleans would have won a second Super Bowl, hands down. Tampa Bay’s Coach Shiano had this to say; “Our dominant win over a determined and focused Atlanta team playing in top form, with everything on the line, shows without a doubt that Tampa is a better representative.” The interview was sadly cut short, because his dog had just thrown up and his wife was busy taking down the Christmas decorations. Osi Umenyiora of the Giants weighed in as well; “Man, it was all part of the plan, defending champs should automatically get a playoff berth anyway, no matter how bad they were beat down. Especially if that spot is Atlanta’s. Their schedule was too damned soft to earn it.”
We couldn’t agree more Osi.”
Hope you enjoyed. It’s gonna be a LOoooooooooOOONG two weeks.
Go Falcons!!

What I liked:
“With the bye week after the sixth game, breaks after Thursday and Saturday games, Smith believes the team is well rested. With the extra work, Smith plans to sharpen up on the fundamentals of blocking and tackling, which he found lacking in the loss to Tampa Bay.”
This really worked for the falcons against the Eagles, Giants, and Tampa(first game) this year. I am liking what I am hearing there.
————
There is one part that stands out to me that I didn’t really like:
Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, who wasn’t with the team in 2010, said it will be “weird” to practice without knowing the next opponent.
“I’ve never been in that situation before and I don’t care for it,” he said. “I like to focus on one team. It’s hard when you have as many as four teams you are preparing for. The flip side is there’s no pressure. I look at it as it’s bonus work.”

Dhunt and trademark– We got a long two weeks ahead. Thanks for filling some of it in… Sportswriters know that our past record is a mystical/lunar warp in space/time that disqualifies Falcons’ achievements today. Doctors know that the Falcons never actually win– periodic collective brain fog invasion (PCBF) causes other teams stumble and lose to us. These empirical findings were highlighted yesterday with another local team at the Sunbowl. USC exposed the Jackets. I quote an expert blogger who speaks for everyone in the country: “Everyone in the country knows USC is a far superior team over GT. Without a coach at all USC could have pounded GT.” Poor USC. They didn’t get beat by the Jackets– they got Kiffined. All USC had to do was show Tech their past record, and the Jackets would have fallen over and passed out on the field. The past is the future! Everyone in the country knows that the Steelers, Saints, and Giants should get automatic seeding in the playoffs this year. If the Falcons don’t humbly offer the Saints the #1 seed– I hope at least the Falcons will use this time in sober appreciation of their insane good fortune.
Speaking of what the whole country knows (at least in the Cage) … great having D3 back!

I’m assuming folks watched the first almost sack of the game -where the LB I think came in and grabbes Ryans arm and he hauled ryan to the turf – luckily, the LB had some mercy and let the arm go as they both bounced off the field – but, that violent yank of Ryans arm I suspect affected his throwing the rest of the game. we know the Falcons KGB is effective -but sadly, it only prompts invective toward guys in the line up who are playing with serious injury – now, us fans don’t get to watch copious amounts of tape so we don’t detect potential, but unannounced, serious play making ability affecting injurires – but the way teams abused Baker last year, I suspect the Falcons KGB only damages player/fans rooting relationships, not how other teams evaluate their opponent (except maybe us – we are lousy at abusing opposing teams weaknesses).

I have a big problem with this statement by HC Smith. Maybe I don’t understand the necessity of it. So would someone help me? The regular season is over and we are the top seed in the NFC and we are working on fundamentals of blocking and tackling. If the players don’t know how to do these things by the end of the 16 game season, they will never know. Isn’t this the time to improve higher level performance beyond the basics. I just don’t have a good feeling about the preparation of this team for the playoff games.

Greetings Cagers!
@Wings,
I understand your concern but at any level, it’s not a bad thing to go back to basics sometimes. In any sport, the right footwork, positioning, technique etc. is always what enables you to execute efficiently.
Even in baseball when a hitter goes in a slump sometimes it’s just a minor tweek in his swing or how he stands in the box, his grip etc that allows hi to correct that swing. Smae thing goes for cricket (if there are any cricketers on the blog). It never hurts to re-visit the fundamentals.
We will be ok. We never lose 2 games in a row so it augers well for us in the first round.
@ trademark – 6:30 – you got that right man, they will be scratching their heads and asking themselves, “what other negative aspect of the Falcons can we write on now?”
It is what it is Bro. Just a snippet from the Honourable Robert Nesta Marley dedicated to all sports writers:

If anything his potential employers should find that comment disturbing. To me it’s suggesting he cannot multi-task too well or he is inexperienced at it. As an NFL head coach you have to be able to manage many scenarios at the same time. As a future employer I’d have to look at his ability to remain focused when all kinds of things are happening around you.

Looks like we’ll have Welcome Back Koetter for at least another year. Fox news is reporting the Falcons tossed a little more cheddar his way and he’s signed up for another year as a Dirty Bird. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Dirk-Koetter-signs-extension-with-Atlanta-Falcons-010213
The Falcons should definitely see major benefits from continuity in the coordinators’ positions, more familiarity and additions to the new systems, and the opportunity to bring in potentially a few more players who fit the systems even better than the 2012 team.
Big Lou, I can give you the eternal optimist take on DK’s comments. The man has never been with a team than earned a playoff bye. He’s being truthful that this is something new for him. Furthermore, he’s probably a bit of a perfectionist and likes to focus in on his goals. He’s not going to be able to do that this week, rather he’s going to have to put in some ultimately wasted work time planning for two (or three) teams that he ultimately won’t have to face next week. He’d rather be putting his laser focus on a known entity. These were simply the musings of a man in a new spot, I wouldn’t take much more than that from it. If he keeps hanging around these Falcons, he’s going to have to get used to doing business like this in the playoffs, because The Falcons have become a perennial power in the NFC.

Do a Google search on Falcons news and the only news you will find is that the Eagles (among other teams) are going to interview every coach and waterboy in the Falcons organization this week. WTH?!?!?! Everybody knows the Eagles are going to hire a college coach to come in an run that frat house! I’m getting the impression that the Eagles are intentionally trying to disrupt the Falcons playoff preparation in retaliation for that after the bye week butt whooping we put on them this year. You know that still has to sting, even in a season full of butt whoopings they took.
I realize the Falcons aren’t playing this week, and no news is (often/usually/maybe) good news. But the radio silence on the Falcons as the Number ONE seed in the NFC seems somewhat strange. Let me also look to see what news is out there about the Denver Broncos, the AFC number one seed and owners of the same 13-3 regular season record.
Where the Falcons have a total of 28 news sources (all about pretty much the same topic of head coaching job interviews), the Broncos have FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY (450) news sources about such a wide variety of topics that I have neither the time nor typing skills to accurately delineate. But hey, the Broncos did win a playoff game last year, so obviously they are worth 20x more news coverage.

I am sure you are not surprised at that now are you? It is par for the course when it comes to the Falcons and media coverage. You can say one thing for them, they are consistent.
This is only the beginning because when we reach the SB and win, there will be all kinds of excuses why Manning, or Brady or whomever lost. You’ll hear we can only win in a dome and we were fortunate that we had home field advantage and all the other possible excuses they can find to denigrate our success.
We as Falcon fans, especially the Cage Faithful, know what they are in denial about. We have a championship calibre team and we will get the job done. So lets not get caught up with opinions of biased journalists and get ready to support our team wherever we may be next week.

OK DHunt, here’s one I think I’ll title “The news as it should have been reported”
“The Cage – 3 Jan. 2013 – With the Playoffs approaching, it’s time to size up the field. Starting with the NFC:
1. Atlanta Falcons (13-3) And why not? The lack of national media attention be damned, this is an extremely dangerous team. Take them lightly, and you’re fooling yourself. Think they can’t beat you in any number of ways, and find yourself sitting on the couch in a few weeks with a few beers and some close friends. MVP candidate Matt Ryan is coming off his best year as a professional, setting franchise records in completion percentage, yards and touchdowns. With the trio of Gonzalez, White and Jones (no particular order- maybe age before speed…) there are literally no teams in this league that can contain them. It’s a case of pick-your-poison with this attack. While the run-game has been pedestrian, the Falcons have hardly needed it, compiling enough yards to be considered the 8th ranked offense, and 7th in points per game. Nonetheless, it’s been there when they’ve needed it, if it isn’t accounted for, Turner, Rodgers and Snelling can end your dreams very quickly. The offensive line has been solid as well, allowing under 30 sacks on a QB that made over 600 drop backs. The Defense has been taken to account for allowing too many yards. To which we say-”empty calories”. This Defense has been extremely stingy, allowing only 18.7 points per game, and forcing 31 turnovers, good for 4th in the NFC, and tied with other more “respected” Defenses like Seattle. Again, ignore them at your own peril. Add to this that they are playing at home for the rest of the ride, and are also playing for more than a ring, but also for Respect, this is our favorite, don’t try to listen to the silence, you’ll get exactly what you deserve, and it won’t be the Lombardi Trophy, the sound you will find will be the screaming and shouting Falcon fans yelling ” We told you so!!”.
2. Green Bay Packers(12-4) – The experience factor is the biggest up-side with this team. Rodgers is battle tested and a very dangerous competitor. The team has the pedigree of past success to bolster their confidence, and with the league’s 13th rated offense (5th in points scored), and 11th rated defense, they are a balanced and dangerous group. A safe bet to be competing for the title, no questions.
3. Seattle Seahawks (11-5) “The Team No One Wants to Play” title award winner this year, Seattle went on a tear about a month back and hopes to carry that momentum into the Playoffs. With a dynamically balanced rushing and passing attack, at least in the past 5 games, as Wilson has been finishing out his rookie season, Seattle can score points in bunches if allowed, and with the league’s top rated defense in points allowed (4th in yards), their balance on both sides of the balls in daunting. The only reason I won’t rank them higher is that the story and performance of this team see-saws wildly based on whether they are playing at home or on the road, and since they are coming in as a Wild-Card, the racous environs of Lincoln Field will not be a deciding factor if this team is to reach the summit.
4. San Francisco 49ers (11-4-1) A ferocious D combined with a talented rookie QB and punishing run game has made San Fran. one of the most feared teams in football this year. Their D is the sotry, though, not allowing yards or points, they can take over a game. This team would have been one of my top 2, but their play of late (3-2, with losses to St. Louis and a blowout loss to their division rival Seahwaks) raises some concerns. Bottom Line: If this team is firing on all cylinders, they can hoist the trophy, no problem.
5. Minnesota Vikings (10-6) The Adrian Peterson show, ‘Nuff said. To play and beat Minnesota, “all” that you have to do is stop him. Go ahead. Try it. Hasn’t and won’t happen. The defense is very middle of the road literally in yards allowed and points scored against, so, not shabby. But the rushing attack is devastating, and yes, Peterson can beat you by himself. The QB situation though is much more shaky, and I just don’t feel this team has all of the pieces together yet to be a serious contender. But, anything can happen.
6. Washington Redskins (10-6) RGIII is dynamic, and the Redskins have been hot of late, winning their last seven games, mostly against division opponents, and featuring an offense ranked 5th in yards per game and 4th in points scored, they can light up a scoreboard, no question. But it isn’t their offense that has them ranked last here, it’s that 28th ranked (22nd in points allowed) defense of theirs. Besides San Francisco, there are some high-flyers out there in this year’s NFC field, and getting into a shoot-out with a rookie QB at your helm, even if it’s RGIII, doesn’t really help your chances. All of that being said, the Redskins are hot, and if they can keep that going for a few more games, well, it’s the NFL.”
Now…if ANYONE in the national media were paying attention, I wouldn’t have had to do that. going to go soak my fingers in ice now.
Rise up!

I don’t. Someone asks him about this new playoff situation he has never experienced, he says it “weird” i.e. different. Seems like common sense. Then he says studying four teams is harder than one. They asked him how it’s different now, and he gave them a bland, factual answer. I would wonder about him if he said that’s it’s no different. Then he says the preliminary prep for three possible opponents is “bonus” work. And that sounds positive to me, like he enjoys the intellectual challenge. So, no, don’t see a problem or complaining in that answer.

One more note on Atlanta-
“This is a team unlike any of the past few few we’ve seen come out of Atlanta during the Playoffs. When faced with challenges this year, they’ve answered them. Loudly. They beat every team with a winning record on their schedule, and handed the Giants the worst and most embarrassing loss ever to a defending champion. They broke the New Orleans Mojo and sent more than one team spiraling down out of playoff contention. And, with convincing wins posted over Washington and Denver(the AFC’s) top seed), this team has showed it can not only hang with the big-boys, but bully ‘em up a bit also.”

Nah. Him “bellyaching” about having to try and prepare for four different teams is kinda like me bellyaching about having to cover my own squad, plus the squad that belongs to another Sergeant while he’s on vacation.
I don’t love doing it, but it’s both necessary and inevitable…and it doesn’t affect my personal performance because I ramp up my efforts as opposed to slacking off.

The New York and Detroit games point toward a successful post season, while the Tampa game throws up some red flags, even though it was “meaningless.” What concerns me about the Tampa game is that it follows the blueprint teams have used to beat us in the post season: get physical with the receivers and pressure Ryan. Koetter needs to gameplan the hell out of this. Also, the Falcons should have figured out how to get a yard on the ground by now. They couldn’t, and didn’t even try, in the Tampa game. I hope this doesn’t come back to haunt us again.

The Game plan offensively stunk. The defense, with the exception of some lousy tackling by DeCoud played fairly well. Why play the starters, at least on defense, for the entire 2nd half? Odd as a 3 dollar bill. That is the only gripe – except for the lousy play making me nervous going into the playoffs. But, we were semi lousy prior to the Giants game, and we shone there. So, it is the Falcons Jekyll and Hyde 2012 season; part deux.

Agree, Paddy O. I know it’s highsight, but I would have given Abe all or most of the game off. The dude is getting old (for a football player) and I don’t think we need to worry about him losing his game-speed edge. I also would not have played Samuel. Guy still needs time to heal his busted arm/shoulder, and he is critical to our D. On offense, I would have also given backups some more time, and worked on the running game, which would help keep Ryan out of harms way. Just not a very smart gameplan for the situation, and no adjustment in-game. I know we will do better in the playoffs, and maybe we can make something positive out of it by using the subpar game for motivation.

DeCoud should be embarrassed with his play against Tampa. That was an inexcusable lack of professionalism. The stuff he put on tape are what people use to support the contention that the Falcons are frauds.

Great article, Taints tears always cheer me up.
Koetter’s comment? It just reinforces my belief he has alot of learning still to do. Koetter did better than my worst fears but was also short of taking this team’s talent to the edge of it’s potential. Some of that, maybe alot of that is on Smitty, but the fact the exact same defensive strategies that started working in week 5 were not figured out by week 17 is telling. A couple of teams installed option read/ pistol sets in just one year and made the playoffs, expecting a nearly 2 decade veteran like Koetter to figure out Cover 2 and some old school Walsh philosphy should not be asking the impossible. I did see alot of evidence of learning and some damn well crafty adjustments made so I’m ok with him coming back. We will hopefully see him make up for some of Smitty’s faults in the playoffs and maybe he can spend offseason getting better at theory craft/ other philosphies.

Man, WHAT is this drool-fest over the Broncos??? I just saw three different playoff field rankers have them at the top, not to mention they top every single solitary power ranking out there…..Atlanta has the EXACT same record, their offenses are very comparable yard and point-wise, and their defenses are .6 points away in points allowed….did ANYONE look at the Broncos schedule?? For all of the ENDLESS DIARRHEA we’ve been hearing about the Falcons’ “weak” schedule, the Broncos have also played just 4 TEAMS WITH WINNING RECORDS, just like us. You want to know the difference? We BEAT ALL OF THOSE TEAMS WE PLAYED, INCLUDING DENVER, while the “allmighty” Broncos were 1-3 IN THOSE GAMES!
WTH??!!! And they wonder why we yell about the lack of respect all of the time. Geeez, I’d lop off an arm just to see the look on their faces and the glazed emptiness in their eyes when they can’t write that the Falcons need to win in the Playoffs to prove anything BS again.
I DARE one of those jerks to go into Flowery Branch and ask the Falcons in PERSON if they think they’re going to waste the #1 seed again. Man-you can feel the heat of that glare already…..

writers absolutely love Payton Manning, just as they hated Favre and were miffed he kept delaying his retirement – as though he worked for them. Koetter proved the Falcons could run screens. MM could not figure out how to integrate that into his play calling. to me, MM was fairly inept OC, and luckily, the Jags GM was even more inept and hired him – I think they call it the Peter Principle, no? MM did NOT get the most out of our offense. Welcome Back is getting MORE, but not the max. I think Nolan is coming pretty darn close, and, I hope he stays. But, since he is going on the interviews, he obviously still wants a HC job, so – sooner or later he’ll be gone. I think folks really underestimate out talent level.

Greetings Cagers! —
It’s nice to see that Koetter will be staying and that he’ll be here for awhile. I really think that with an actual running back that isn’t slow as molasses and the head coach isn’t forcing you to run a sta-puft, than his offense will be even more dynamic. Get oldman McClure out of there, move Konz to C, move Clabo to RG, move Baker to RT, and Holmes to LT and we should light it even more next year, especially if we FINALLY drop Turner and add another RB through the draft to complement Quizz and Snelling. So, even though Koetter looked as bad as Malarkey at times, the offense overall was much better.
Like Big Ray said earlier, I’m betting we lose Nolan. Look what the dude’s done at all the places he’s been in only a year. Even though Singletary and Harbaugh get all the credit for that Niner defense, Nolan helped lay a little of the ground work. I simply think that there’s way too many openings for someone like Nolan not to get a job. He likely has learned lessons from his head coaching days and has been around several head coaches since.
There’s 7 openings, so here’s what I think:
-Andy Reid will fill one of the jobs, looking like Cardinals
-Ken Whisenhunt will get another one, sounds like the Bills
-Probably see Lovie Smith get another shot somewhere
-Sounds like Chip Kelly will be lured
-Even though rumors abound that Saban will be lured back, don’t count it.
-Broncos OC is the hot name and likely he gets one of them.
-That’s still two teams that will hire new coaches, and what better coordinators are out there I ask?
You know Norv Turner, Chan Gailey, Pat Shurmur, and Romeo Crennel will not be getting head coaching jobs again.
If Lovie Smtih or Romeo Crennel don’t get picked up, there’s two names who could take over, but here’s my absolute biggest fear………..
that Mike Smith picks himself up another puppet in the vein of Brian Van Gorder or the ilk. Even though Koetter’s not as bad as Malarkey, that whole “we’re keeping 85% of the playbook the same” garbage reeks of grand puppeteering and we know who’s behind the deal with Turner.
Nolan has saved our tail many times this year, and outside of proven guys like Crennel or Lovie Smith, I think we’re screwed if Nolan leaves.

And yet another sign that Harry Douglas needs more touches / targets / catches:
Although Tampa Bay’s Vincent Jackson went deep into the season before dropping his first pass, Atlanta’s Harry Douglas had the NFC South’s best hands in 2012. At least if you go by the numbers.
Douglas finished with a division-high 97.4 catch percentage (receptions divided by receptions plus drops), according to ESPN Stats & Information. Douglas made 38 catches and had only one drop. Douglas was targeted 56 times.
Best hands in the NFC South and barely gets the ball.

Falcons Receiver Stats:
HD: 38/59, 10,4 YPC, 64% of balls that are targeted for him.
TG, 93/124, 10.4 YPC, 75%
Roddy…92/143, YPC, 64%
JJ 79/129, 15.2, 61%
HD’s production per attempt is below the other guys, even though he dropped the ball once, that does not tell the entire story…If you don’t get TO the ball, it does not mean you should not have caught it.
He averages what TG does on YPC, and with a completion % of Roddy, who averages 40% more yards per catch.
As I have mentioned, we have to get more production out of HDs spot, that is who they are leaving open with Tampa 2 and brackets on TG…..I am not going to lay it on HD, but I do there there is a chemistry issue between Ryan and HD, or at least it is not as good as the other receivers, hence, Ryan goes to him less.
That said, his best game of the season was against the Giants, so looks like they did scheme to get him to take advantage of his matchups, but I agree, it is key.
Also, if TG does leave, regardless of who we get to play TE, I expect HD to see a lot more ball his way.

I’m not so sure that Nolan gets a gig anywhere…
From what I’ve heard, the only interview he has lined up is with Philly. Most of the teams out there looking for coaches are looking for offensive driven coaches. I would think Philly would be the lone threat to lure Nolan away, mainly because the trouble they’ve had finding a defensive mind over the years since Jim Johnson passed. Sean McDermith, Juan Castillo, and Todd Bowles – those aren’t exactly names that they’re looking for to upgrade that defense. It’s a possibility that they’ll bring in a guy like Nolan to salvage what they’ve invested in guys like Nnamdi and DRC.
Other than Philly though, I don’t see any potential landing spots for him. I think it’s Philly that should all worry us.

Hear ya Wabe, the only problem I see with that, is that while he’s a great fit/fix for Philly’s Defense, their offense is anemic. His (Nolan’s) Head Coaching resume from San Francisco doesn’t really speak volumes about his ability to resurrect that phase of their game. He’s only part of the solution. The only thing they would be smart to do there would be to convince him to make a lateral move, from Atlanta to Philly as the Defensive Coordinator, but I don’t see why he would want to do that.

Since they need a QB in Philly, they may not be after defensive minded Nolan unless he can possibly get Smith from SanFan. It does not appear Nolan is the front runner– Philly.com’s assessment:
“For now, it remains to be seen which direction the Eagles would go, though Lurie has seemingly favored the up-and-coming bright minds, especially since one of his key decision-makers (Roseman) could be younger (37) than his next head coach. McCoy is among that brand. Nolan is more established – though his track record as a head coach isn’t pretty.”

Nolan and Alex smith reunited…yeeaa, somehow I don’t think the Philly fans are exactly feelin’ it.
But how do you not get behind the up and coming young coach idea?
I heard of this innovative young guy who runs something called an H-back……And can you believe that Dan Henning stayed in the NFL until 2007 until he was 65 years old?
Sometimes, guys are just born to be coordinators.
Another interesting stat, the Atlanta falcons were 29th in yards allowed per play,, just a few notches above New Orleans. and 5th in scoring. What saved their azz?
Turnovers, and we dominated the time of possession, so the other team just did not have the ball enough, or offensive play calling has a lot to do with that.
Call me names, say what you wish, but there is not denying that field position, turnovers, time of possession is what separates winners and losers in the NFL, at least during the regular season, I believe that is proven true.
Can we win with it in the playoffs with it? We have not yet to date….but, I smell crow in the oven, the question is, who is eating it.

I should be happy about this, but the idea that having cold feet due to teams with questions at the QB position does not make me feel as warm about this as it should. And a one year contract, eh? Can’t say I’m surprised.
In the meantime, no word on Nolan, and that’s the name I want to hear, so I’m nervous still.
Perhaps Nolan merely uses his “popularity” as leverage to get more dough out of Blank…whatever…it’s a business. Just pay the man so that our top 10 defense can become a top 5 defense and we have some continuity on that side of the ball.
When you don’t have an offense that has PROVEN to be a deadly thing from game to game and season to season…you need that “next level” defense.

It is highly possible that with Turner shipped off to the fat farm, our offense becomes truly dynamic. BIG problem of course is if we win the SB, Tony G is NOT coming back. IF we get close, yeah – I think we get him for another year. In TD I trust.
Big Ray

Could be that Tony really is gone after this year. I think the key is Ryan, though. It’s Ryan that wants him back, and why wouldn’t he?
Problem is, sooner or later Tony G really does have to go, and it’s better for him to go out at the top of his game…which ironically is right now.
This makes me wonder – is Michael Palmer really good enough to be the heir apparent at the TE position? He’ll never be Tony G, but is he good enough to be anything like a Jason Whitten? Or a not-so-damn-crazy Jeremy Shockey?
If not, then we’d better be making moves SOON, because we don’t seem all that in a hurry to find a replacement for the amount of balls that get thrown Tony’s way.
I think no matter what we do, we’re not going to get that kind of production out of the TE position for a loooong time once Tony is gone. But it doesn’t mean we can’t get close. If we don’t find or have a guy that can catch 40-60 balls a season, we’re going to have to seriously tweak our offense.
Just look at what Tony is putting up stat-wise and tell me things wouldn’t be different…

Wouldn’t that make HD more targeted on the offense? The reason he doesn’t get the ball more is because he is the last read, usually. To be honest, I do not think the production from our passing will go down–from the TE position, sure, but not overall. HD will just accumulate more yards because he will be a bigger part of the scheme.
Heck, if we can get a more dynamic running back, then it wouldn’t even matter anyways. It would be nice to replace Tony G, but color me crazy… I just don’t think it’s THAT important. I rather them focus on the trenches and a RB to balance our offense. That would help Ryan more than a TE option. Also, I feel Palmer would do an adequate job or maybe even sign Dallas Clark till a good prospect comes out that we can grab.

Big Lou ,
HA! I knew you’d see where I was going.
The point I was going to make before those chicken wings rudely interrupted me (we won’t go into detail here)…..
Is that we CAN’T replace Tony’s production from his position. Even more so, we can’t replace his level of talent at that position.
So logically, you have to look elsewhere. RB was actually my first thought, with my second being that you lose a magnificent receiving threat in TG, but you have an opportunity to change up your attack.
HD makes us more dangerous in some ways because of his speed and ability to make yards after the catch.
A better RB helps us even more, disguising what we might do from play to play and making a successful attack inevitable even on plays when the defense KNOWs what we’re going to do. Only full-feature RBs can do that.
Palmer likely falls into TG’s spot as a guy who will do more blocking than catching.
My concerns were this –
1) This will always be the biggest thing – Smitty’s learning curve will always dictate how quickly and how effectively we evolve on offense. Dude has hung on to Mike Turner like a dearly departing lover. The drop off from Gonzalez’s production will force us to do something on offense, but will that be completely up to Koetter? We’ll know how much it will depending on whether or not Turner is around next season, or if we pick up a RB in the draft…and when.
Koetter will be around, we do know this. Question is whether or not he’ll have a license to thrill – will he get more vertical and go across the middle of the field with HD and with a pair of RBs who can catch as well as run?
2) Turner. If he stays, I have no faith that he does so in a truly reduced role. Smitty has talked plenty about how good Quizz is and can be. Still treats him primarily like a 3rd down RB. Smitty has talked plenty about cutting Turner’s carries. He did do that, but he also b!tches about the running game. Somewhere in there, it never occurred to him to keep the running game going by running out of the shotgun and using other guys as much or more than Turner. There’s that steep ass learning curve again…
3) Trying to force more passes towards Roddy and Julio, and substituting more running where there will be less passes to the TE. It could happen. I only want it to happen in one way – we get a stud of a RB who can gash defenses at a moment’s notice. A homerun hitter that makes it really hard to load up against us on pass rush or on defending the run.
Even then, it’s necessary to get the ball to Douglas more. He becomes the 3rd read instead of the 4th.

Ok, the way I see it, there are two types of crow you can eat. You can eat crow because you were down on your team’s chances and they came through, or you can eat crow because you predicted excellence and got an egg.
I am not ordering the latter version of crow, but with the following, I am saying that is the crow I will eat if necessary.
I think the Falcons will come out and kick the tail of any of the three teams they will face in the divisional round. Not necessarily a beatdown, but definitely a win.
Here’s why: The running game and that includes Michael Turner. The Falcons have not abdoned the run game and they aren’t incapable as so many believe, they just use it sparingly. They are saving Turner, that’s been overtly stated. They have shown that they CAN run it. Go back to the New Orleans game at home, opening drive Turner and Quizz pounded the rock all the way to the end zone. After the first Eli interception against the Giants, we pounded it into the end zone with Turner. And even in the abysmal Tampa game, the bright spot was a 17-yard TD run by Turner in which the Oline blocked brilliantly. We will have these types of successes with Turner in the playoffs. They have been planning it all along.

[part II]
The screen game, and RBs in the pass offense. AKA, the running game phase II (or I). When the offense is clicking, successful screens are an important part of the mix (see NYG game, among others). This can, and does, even include Turner. It’s not that hard to catch a screen pass, and by keeping it as an option no matter who is on the field, we keep the defense guessing. Although Turner is too slow to do much with a screen, it still gains yards on the hopefully few attempts. Snelling and Quizz are, of course, perfectly suited to catch passes out of the backfield.
Our defense, naturally. Still underrated. They will either keep us in the game until the offense can click, or they will dominate (in tandem with the offense ) with turnovers and tough red zone play. Nolan is a genius.
Matt Ryan. His brilliant year was no mirage. He answered the challenges and keyed most of the wins this year. He will step up in the playoffs, if his Oline gives him a pocket and a few seconds. They will.
Tony G. He is due for a big playoff game. But if it’s not him, Julio or Roddy. But Tony and Roddy have that chemistry with Matt that can make all the difference. They will all likely have their moments if the point immediately above happens (Ryan has protection).
Peaking at the right time. Pretend you are a horse race handicapper — throw out the Tampa game and the Carolina game, as they were nothing games in the scheme of things. How did they do in the big races recently (NO, NYG, Detroit)? Wins. They will rack up a couple more in the Ga. Dome this month. Or I’ll eat my hat, with a side of crow.

What is interesting is we were in the middle of the pack in giving up yardage, and 29th in yards per play, and I am actually optimistic about our defense heading into the playoffs.
I guess it is our being 5th in scoring that gives me confidence. But we have to acknowledge that you cannot look at our defense by itself. It is our special teams play, and our offensive play calling that keeps our “bend but don’t break” defense from breaking by making teams march the field, and limiting their opportunities by dominating the clock.
My point? football is a cohesive game, offense, defense, special teams, it is all related. And although I laud Nolan for being able to bring the smoke and mirrors to make up for a pedestrian defensive talent level (yea, I said it, no pro bowlers, our best player is arguably a 34 year old part timer).
But, it is not Nolan alone….as I said, I admit I cringe when I watch a falcons game and tubby turner stumbles for yet another 2 yard loss, and hardly think Smitty is a genius, but he might be Chauncy Gardner. (google it).

Smitty Facts:
* Smitty is 46-1 when the Falcons hold the lead going into the 4th quarter.
* His teams have had 22 come from behind 4th quarter victories.
* We credit Nolan being #5 in scoring? The Falcons are #3 in scoring defense under you know who from 08-11.
* Up until this year, they allowed 17 points in 53 possessions inside 2 minutes of each have between 08-11. I am not sure where we stand this year, but I don’t recall us give him many late game points. Hell, I have seen teams let up 17 points in the final 2 minutes of one half.
* Bend but don’t break? Falcons were ranked #2 last year in defensive red zone efficiency under You know who.
* Our Special Teams have been ranked in the top 10 every year since 08
* From 2008-2011, our team led the league in forcing teams to start drives inside their 20 yard line, 63 times in 48 games….That is how you win football games.
I am not trying to piss anyone off, just stating facts. Go back and look at Smittys defensive resume form Jacksonville.

I just don’t get all the emphasis on “history” (and particularly playoff history) when it comes to analyzing future playoff results. Often the history in question isn’t even recent history. How the Falcons playoff history from the 80’s reflects on this current team is simply inconsequential. If history was any indication, the Seahawks, Redskins, Colts, and Bengals wouldn’t even be in the playoffs. Add to that the simple fact that historical analysis simply cannot factor in the current incarnation of an NFL team when players and coaches change and develop (or regress) from year to year.
In my mind, even recent history has only so much to offer insofar as analyzing or predicting what will happen in the playoffs is a slippery slope. Recent history says the Vikings A.P. will rack up 200 yards rushing on the Pack. If that happens, there is a very good chance the pack will lose, even at home, because in the playoffs that means the Vikings aren’t playing from behind, and there’s much less chance for Ponder to have a big impact on the outcome of the game. The Giants entered last season’s playoffs as one of the weakest run teams in the league, but somehow managed to turn it up and turn it on in that Superbowl run.
Matt Ryan has had a couple of sub par games in recent playoff history. Particularly in the Giants game last year, I have always had the impression that was far more about being outcoached than it was about his actual performance. Mularkey had no intention of changing anything, and it showed as the Falcons weren’t able to generate the few plays they needed to even look competitive in that game. No way Koetter has the same lack of creativity and flexibility this year.
The one thing that seems to stand out in postseason success is a teams will to win. The Falcons have that over almost every other team I can think of. This year’s Falcons have played down to their opposition on several occasions, but have also played up to their competition in major ways on even more occasions. They’ve looked great in prime time and against all the elite competition they have faced. That bodes well for playoff success.

History is no indication, unless it gets in your head and start thinking your snake bit. Had Brooking made a play in 08, who knows what the result would be today, but he did not, and here we are.
Watch the news conferences of the teams who fired their coaches, every single one is looking for somebody to come in, and field a competitive team every year. Not a single one says they are looking for a guy who can demonstrate they can win in the playoffs, they are looking for consistency, because you know if you keep getting there, your gonna win.
The “I want to win championships” is more bluster than anything, I mean, who does not? You have to put yourself in position, which they have done a quite well, then you have to seize the opportunity, which is step 2 of the process.
Can we get an offensive minded coach who will do more with our “talent”? Probably, but will we continue to have solid D? (remember we are #3 in points allowed from 08-11, not do dis Nolan, but he did not build this team) will we be solid on special teams? Will we keep our uncanny ability to hold leads and snuff teams out?
Will we have a consistent winner? No guarantee at all, it is my experience that we probably wont.
And when you start to design systems around your “talent”, your one or two injuries away from a lost season.Think MV7, Jamal Anderson, remember those days? One hit, season over….Now, if Ryan goes down….but your system does at least try to keep him out of harms way, we know the golden geese….(fingers crossed).
Again, every owner strives for consistency, for they know, if you keep putting yourself in position, eventually you will seize the opportunity. Man, do I hope we do it this year, I really feel it we win one stupid playoff game, there we will be very hard to stop.

It’s not just points allowed per game…
the reason why Nolan is being praised as much as he is is because he’s finally corrected areas that have plagued this team for years.
The pass defense has been average to below-average since Smitty and BVG arrived. The 3rd down defense has been terrible for years.
Those are things you see that Nolan actually improved upon. We’re a top 10 pass defense for the first time in how long? And we’re a better overall 3rd down defense, which is huge because it gets the ball back to our offense for more opportunities.
BVG and Mike Nolan don’t belong in the same sentence.
At all.

I would bet that we’ve taken the ball away more this season than any season BVG’s been here…
Credit that to Mike Nolan’s exotic schemes.
Guys like DeCoud and Robinson were guys that most folks were ready to run out of town. Same with C.Owens after the GB game. The entire secondary has taken their level of play up a notch, mainly because they’re now being put in spots to be playmakers.
There’s a reason why Mike Nolan’s getting looks for head coaching vacancies and why BVG never, and I mean NEVER, did.

LOL, wabe, I agree, Nolan has put up some fantastic schemes, and flat out confused the best QBs in the game with what I will call average NFL talent.
When he we need to make play, he can flat out dial one up which is a departure from the past, whom I will not mention.
But he has benefited by offensive’s ability to control the game clock, their ability to not make critical turnovers to put his defense in bad positions, and high quality special teams. He has not done it by himself. It is not like he is victim Smitty’s philosophy, actually, Smitty has shown the ability to do what he could not so as a HC, handle all the other details to put his defenses in position to do what he does best.

Time of possession fell this year from about an average of 32 minutes over the last couple years to 30. So it’s a wash now, rather than an advantage.
Reflects the change this year to a more dynamic, quick-strike offense and an agressive, opportunistic defense. In the past, yes, our offense was designed to help our defense through time of possession.
We haven’t relied on that as much this year. Nolan and Koetter actually complement each other well and both are the reason we are more dangerous in the post season this year. On both sides of the ball, we can take over, rather than relying on the careful management of the past.

Man, I’m sure I’m like many of you in that this wait is killing me. Even though I’m continuing my ignoring of national media elite, I peaked on the ticker on ESPN while watching a soccer show and they said something to the effect or “out of the last 36 Super Bowl playoff teams, 11 that have been on a 5 game winning streak have made the Super Bowl, 5 winning it. Broncos, Redskins, & Seahawks are on 5+ winning streaks.”
Wha? There really is no limit to the extent that MTV Sports will go to justify their garbage fixation on their darling teams. What kind of ridiculous stat is that? You probably could have gotten that stat by examining teams that had white cleats instead of black.
I want to have success in these playoffs for no other reason than shut these pieces of dog-doo the hell up.

A blowout would be nice, but I’ll take a win, any way we can get it.
I’ve been all about the ‘way we win’ throughout the course of the season. But now, I could care less if we get lucky 3 games in a row, as long as they’re holding that Lombardi.
A big win in the opening round would go a long way to propel a Superbowl run. But again, winning is the most important thing here.
I’m sure we all feel the same way about that.

Man, couldn’t agree more right here. I know we’ve battled back plenty during the regular season, but this is a whole new ballgame. We don’t have many “playoff veterans” other than Samuel and Chris Hope who knows what it takes in the postseason. As amazing as Gonzo is, he might as well be a rookie in the postseason because he’s never won a game. Really, we haven’t gotten behind very early in any of our postseason losses. We were winning the Cards game and gave away the lead on first series of 2nd half. We were BEATING the Packers in the first quarter (something most of us forget), until Michael Jenkins slips in the endzone and Matty throws the pick 6. The Packers scored 28 effin’ points in the 2nd quarter (21 on offense). I’m sorry, but if your defense gives up 21 points in one quarter, you’ll never win. And the Giants game was very close until about the end of the 3rd quarter and they just completely pulled away.
Like you, I’m worried about getting behind early, but the Vikes, Seahawks, and Redskins aren’t the quick strike teams, except for play action of course. If we can’t stop the run, we’re screwed.
Matty Bicep

Yet, the Vikes, Hawks, and Skins are the top three rushing teams in the NFL. Again, Nolan did who he can stop a running back. My guess is we commit to stop the run and if successful, we start to up a lot of “stop the run” looks that morph into coverage to try and force the rookie QBs to read pass.
And for Nolans “exotic looks”, the Xs and Os is not necessarily the hard part, anyone on the NFL level can concoct it by watching tape, but the execution is what is so hard, and the algorithm of when and what you do is probably the most important part, the unpredictability, I think that is where Nolan excels too.
Getting 11 guys to have different assignments each play, to know the real estate they have to cover regardless of where thy line up, to me, is the hard part.
The Falcons are in the bottom 3rd of the league in stopping teams on 3rd down, BUT, Nolan knows how to dial it up when it is critical. BUT, if one guy misses his assignment, of tips the coverage, it can be fatal. THAT to me is what coaching is. Anyone can go look at Rex Ryan plan for Tom Brady in the 09 playoffs, but executing it is the hard part….I wonder if Nolan is watching old Viking games to see how they defensed Fran Tarkenton back in the day.

Is it just me, or have others seen how many times our offense has lost possession with no points, putting the pressure on the defense, who has come to the rescue time and again?
Nolan has NOT benefitted from Smittyball nearly as often as you might want to think. All those takeaways? All those times a team only came away with a FG? That was a DIRECT result of Nolan and his players getting the job done when the offense couldn’t do it.
Controlling the clock has not always been the factor in winning that it should have been.
In fact – here’s one for you: How do you win a game by controlling the clock and not scoring very much? By playing good defense . There IS no other way.
I’m not saying Nolan succeeded in spite of Smitty. I’m saying the offense has benefitted by the play of the defense more often than not…not the other way around in most cases.
I can’t count how many times we’ve put the defense in bad situations this season, only to see them respond and give the offense yet another chance.
Does the first game against Carolina ring a bell? It should….
As for comparing Smitty as a head coach to Nolan being a head coach….do you really want to go there? Start with the GM each coach had, and then the QB each coach had..then look at their OCs. Go from there.
Here’s a hint – Nolan “played” two positions with the 49ers…something I think no defensive-minded coach should do.

“Is it just me, or have others seen how many times our offense has lost possession with no points, putting the pressure on the defense, who has come to the rescue time and again?”
We were 5th getting Turnovers, 7th in scoring. 7th in turning the ball over (in a good way), and #4 in turnover differential. Seems like were are pretty balanced, nobody putting anyone in bad position, I credit the HC for that, everyone looks good…. We got turnovers, we scored plenty of points. As someone mentioned above, Koetter and Nolan complemented each other quite will.
I do agree that with quicker strike offense we might have scored more points, but we also would be giving the ball back quicker…and since we were in the bottom 3rd of the league in stopping teams in 3rd down, and had to rely on Nolans wizzardry to get big plays when we needed them….I just would not want to have had wanted to keep going to the well….That was Chicago’s problem, when your defense is build around big plays, your vulnerable. In Chicago we saw it, in Atlanta, it never became a problem.
The first Carolina game? Its one game, every team has had their stinkers, but, wait, we won that one, and sure our D made a play, but being on the 1 yard line with under a minute left is not exactly like the defense gave you the game on a silver platter…They actually failed to recover 2 Cam fumbles that quarter that could have made things a little easier…Again. balance, Karma, teamwork. everyone doing the best they can and finding a way….Again, a credit to the HC.
Bottom line, a HC how somehow had BVG as a DC blew one 4th quarter lead in 4….IDK, something is just working. I can’t say I even see it, again, Chancy Gardner.
As for Nolan as a HC, his WP was .328, Mike Singletary’s was .450, Harbaugh is around .800 with the same QB. Spin it how you want, but I struggle with that too. I admit I am know to familiar with all the circumstances surrounding that situation, but I if I were to hire him, I would ask a lot of questions to see what he learned from that experience, I don’t see the slam dunk. Actually, in Nolan I see a guy who can design specific schemes for specific situations that produce great plays, it is almost the antithesis of consistency, it is kinda like a specialty. Actually, he is the perfect fit with Smitty, and I hope he says around awhile.
Overall, we can analyze until we turn blue, but it is hard to think we would have improved on 13-3, sure there are always ifs and buts, but we did exactly what we needed, more than any other NFC team, it is kinda hard to imagine we would have done much more with a different philosophy.

The Smitty factor (i.e. a failure of leadership in the Debacle and the Meltdown) makes me nervous. The defense gives me hope. So that’s a wash. The experience factor (third playoff appearance in a row) may be enough to put us over the top for a win or three.

He’s one of those guys that doesn’t necessarily need to catch the ball out of the backfield because he runs so damn well.
All of the best RBs in the League aren’t known for “pushing the pile.” They gash defenses.

If Smitty was a control freak afraid to be challenged, or is a scared to hire someone too good who will take his jog, Nolan is not here. I don’t try to spin it, but it just is reality.
But he does have to take the next step, with the consistency he has shown, IF he can win one, we might win multiple championship, especially with Ryan….BUT, he has to win his first playoff game.

This is going to have a lot to do with how far the Falcons go in the playoffs. We’re hearing a lot of talk out of the locker room about how there’s a different feel, a different attitude with this group of Falcons. Is it the right feel? Is it the right attitude? I hope so.
One of the hallmarks of the Falcons over the last few years has been their propensity to play tight in big games. I believe Koenen made a comment about it after he defected to the loser team down south. Abe has made not-so-subtle comments about the atmosphere of “fear of screwing up.” The players have lauded the current staff for eliminating that sort of atmosphere.
The biggest two games the Falcons played this year were against the Broncos and the Giants. There was no hint of playing tight, playing nervous, or playing scared. I think this year’s gonna be different.
Between Koetter’s and Ryan’s control of an offense with too many threats to cap, and Nolan’s ability to detail a custom-tailored, deadly attack on every offense he faces, the Falcons may just show they are the team everyone should’ve feared.
I’m thinking about sending a case of Neogyn to ESPN headquarters in Connecticut after the Falcons win the Superbowl. There are gonna be a lot of hurting va-jay-jays up there . . .

Thanks for the link, trade. Here’s one for the disrespect files.
I was watching NFL network this morning and they were talking about the Washington-Seattle game, then they pivot to who of these two teams do the 49ers want to face. The Niners? Seriously? Everybody knows there is little chance of Minnesota beating Green Bay again, at Lambeau, and the winner of the Skins-Hawks matchup will most likely be heading to Atlanta. Didn’t matter to the talking heads — hey here’s a chance to talk about the Niners. As one person said on another board (ESPN or NFL.com, not sure which): Is Atlanta even in the playoffs?

Saturday Greetings Cagers!
If there was ever a time to show up big time and shut these effin MFers up once and for all, it’s time. Like I said, I can’t bear the thought of not winning again in the playoffs. I kind of think this is finally the time, but I also can’t go over to that side just yet (as a I lifelong Falcons and Dawgs fan, I’m sure many of you can sympathize).
Anyone associated with this organization isn’t hurting for motivation on this one.
As Arno said, Are the Falcons even in the playoffs
Finishing a new post for playoffs coming soon…………

I haven’t heard anything on William Moore, but I hope the info you got is correct. I know Dunta was cleared yesterday, but William Moore will be huge for us.

That wasn’t me, D3– but one additional effect of the media non-coverage, which is very evident when I scan other cities’ blogs, is that the average NFL fan has no idea what makes the Falcons tick. The sports media has done the non-Falcons fan a disservice, too.

D3, The Falcons defense must play aggressive and get some 3and out plays instead of this bend don’t break defense.
When teams drive on the Falcons and eat up clock it forces the Falcons on offense to make more plays, and also put more pressure on the team, this why Falcons have so many close games because of the bend don’t break defense.
GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BM, I told you yesterday that we would come out running on all cylinders! I had spoken to Carnak.
“the average NFL fan has no idea what makes the Falcons tick.” Arno, that’s a good thing don’t you think? I’ll bet they do some research when we win the big potato!!

Got to watch out on those semantics… that doesn’t really mean they will be ready. I’ll be more at ease when they actually practice next week.

Guys, to be honest, the media isn’t really talking about the Falcons cause it’s the bye week. They’ll be all over them next week.
Also, Stephen A. Smith picks the Falcons to make the Superbowl on Friday.

Thanks for posting the link.
I think Peter King is on the money in regard to Quizz Rodgers. Hopefully Smitty/Koetter realizes this as well and is just “saving it” for the playoffs. Heh.

Zoomie ,
Good stuff, and I do remember Koenen saying that before he went and got overpaid in Tampa.
The attitude means a lot. When you’re playing not to lose, you don’t have much hope of winning.
Winning should not be a relief. It should be an exultation.
Such a big difference two new Coordinators have been. And it’s not like this is blog conjecture. The players themselves have made quotes to this effect.

Big Lou, in my little anecdote, they were talking about San Fran. So, yeah, that’s ignoring the Falcons — San Fran has a bye too.
