What a Game! (AJC)
Fans have been waiting a long time for a statement game, and boy was it worth the wait. The Falcons utterly dominated every aspect of the game against the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. It was one of the best and most complete games in the 5 years that Mike Smith has been head coach and likely one of the best in franchise history. Wanted to go ahead and get a new thread up and let you all discuss the great game that was. Rest of post will be finished soon. Enjoy………..
Last week was one of the worst losses in the Smith Era, but he followed it up with one of the best wins not only in his tenure, but likely in franchise history. The Falcons utterly dominated pretty much every aspect of the game. They moved down the field with ease on offense, getting almost every playmaker involved. The offensive line had one of it’s best game in years versus one of the best defensive fronts in all of football. The defense not only intercepted two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning twice, but also held the Giants on three 4th down conversions in the Falcons territory. The special teams stepped up to the plate and held David Wilson in check and the planning and preparation on the coaches part has to be one of the best in years. If fans were waiting for a complete game, they finally got it and then some.
JJ with Two TDs (AJC)
AJC columnist Jeff Schultz wrote an article about Matt Ryan asking every player for an extra 30 minutes this week and promising an hour of his own time for every 30 minutes the players gave. The leadership off the field translated to an excellent day on the field. After a bad trend started to emerge the last few games, Ryan bounced back in superb fashion and led the team to one of it’s best offensive outputs of the season. Ryan was efficient (23/28), checked in to correct plays throughout the game, threw the deep ball, and came away with 3 touchdown passes. He did one of his best jobs distributing the ball in a long while. He found a way to include almost every offensive playmaker in some form or fashion. Here’s to hoping that Ryan is hitting his stride at just the right time and that turns out to be true, he’s going to a tough out for almost every defense.
Many of us here in The Bird Cage have been guilty of heaping criticism on the Falcons head coach (this author as guilty as anyone), but it’s only fair to give effusive praise when warranted as well. Coach Smith seemed to take the embarrassing loss to the Panthers personal and it “heightened their focus” while planning and preparing for the Giants. The scheme on offense, defense, and special teams was magnificent. They confused and harassed Manning on defense. The offensive scheme was one of the best in a long while, making a point to getting as many playmakers involved as possible and making it virtually impossible for the Giants to focus in on one or two players. The special teams held one of the most explosive returners in the game in check as well. A huge kudos to Coach Smith and the entire coaching staff on a near-flawless gameplan, preparation, and execution. Here’s to hoping that Smith can find a way to bottle that special week of practice for the playoffs coming up soon.
Falcons D Stands Tough (AJC)
The Falcons found a way to fix one of their biggest issues on defense all year long: tackling. They wrapped up well throughout the game, which was a big factor in stopping the Giants 3 times on 4th down conversions. They carried a gameplan that did wonders to confuse and harass Eli Manning throughout the game. Only a few times did the Birds have issues stopping the Giants. They were able to shut down one of the more talented receiving corps in the NFL with Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, and Dominik Hixon. It also was a total team effort. Chris Hope did an excellent job filling in for the injured William Moore. Stephen Nicholas had one of the better games he’s had in awhile, adding to the already stellar play of Sean Weatherspoon and rapidly improving Akeem Dent. The defensive line generated pressure and held firm against the run, one of the weakest areas through the season. Asante Samuel has brought a swagger to this defense and his presence was readily felt early in the game. Hats off to one of the best defensive efforts in recent memory.
Michael Turner led the way and Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling added in some nice balance and formed a very complementary trio in the backfield. Turner saw most of the carries and ran as hard and well as he did all season. Rodgers may not have had the best final stat sheet (11 carries for 25 yards), but he injected some needed versatility and shiftiness in the backfield to Turner’s hard charging style. One of the most pleasant surprises was seeing Jason Snelling rack up 39 yards on 6 carries, running with drive and toughness. Snelling hasn’t gotten many touches this season, but he may have earned himself some more with his play on Sunday. Some will say that it was only a product of mop-up time, but there didn’t seem to be any wholesale changes on the Giants defense. Snelling basically ended the game all by himself, running for several first downs to end the game kneeling down inside the Giants own 10 yard line. It will always be a struggle getting all the backs involved with markedly less carries than the past due to the emergence of the passing game, but Dirk Koetter did a darn fine job of it on Sunday.
Great Day by Ryan (AJC)
No other unit has been so beleaguered and criticized as the Falcons offensive line. They may not be a more maligned unit on any team in the entire NFL. With their backs to the wall and facing one of the best fronts in the league (ones who owned them in last year’s postseason nonetheless), they gave Matt Ryan plenty of time and opened plenty of big holes for the running backs. It was by far one of the best played games by the Falcons OL in a long time. Like Smith with the Giants gameplan and preparation, only if they can figure out a way to bottle that scheme and execution for the playoffs.
Sure, it was only 3 catches for 83 yards, but fans finally saw what they’ve been waiting so long for, which was to see the extremely talented slot receiver make an impact in a game in a big way. The thought was always that Douglas would start to get a ton of looks with defenses focusing on Julio Jones, Roddy White, and Tony Gonzalez first, but that hasn’t really come to fruition this year as expected. There’s only so many touches to go around and the Falcons already have two 1,000 receivers and a tight end that is well over 800 yards himself. However, Douglas had two huge receptions for long gains that helped change the face of the game. The catches added an element of versatility not seen to this extent in 2012 where defenders found themselves in an impossible position of trying to cover all the Falcons weapons. In fact, if Ryan had hit Douglas in stride on the first long reception, he may have taken it to the house. It was a beautiful sight to behold seeing essentially all of the Falcons weapons get in on the action, including HD, and much of the credit goes directly to Dirk Koetter for his superb gameplan and scheme.
Smitty Gets Huge Kudos! (AJC)
The Falcons have a 2 game lead in the NFC for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and seemingly only need to win one of the two final games to lock up the home-field advantage. However, if history has told us anything in the NFL lately, the team that’s playing the best football as the playoffs approach are usually the ones that go the deepest in the postseason. They couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the final drive towards the playoffs, but they will have their focus tested as they travel to the Detroit Lions who are 4-10 on the year and host the Bucs who sit at 6-8 after being 6-4 only a month ago. They talked about keeping the pedal to the metal before their clunker of the year in Charlotte. They also will not have the luxury of getting up for the defending Super Bowl Champions and also the team that knocked them out of the playoffs. With so many goals right in front of them, an issue of focus and motivation shouldn’t be a problem.
1) Simple Steamroll – where does this game rank for you?
2) Is this the best game in the Mike Smith Era?
3) How does the coaching rank for you?
4) Is Ryan taking that final, next step?
5) Is the defense peaking for the playoffs?
6) Just a one game surge, or are the Falcons finally clicking?
7) Your thoughts on the running back mix?
8.) Can Smith and Co. bottle that preparation and practice for the playoffs?
9) Most importantly, can the Falcons keep it going?

I’m back from the game, and all I can say is, “wow, beautiful game.” Took my Dad and my two daughters as a birthday present for him. He was thrilled, “best birthday present ever.”
There were a ton of very glum NY Giant fans there. They had like two plays to cheer for.
I will now shut up about Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Coach Smith, Arthur Blank, Dirk Koetter, and the Falcon logo. (D3, hope everything is ok)

Got to give credit to the Fox NFL crew. Jimmy, Howie, and Michael all ate their crow like men on live tv in the postgame wrap up. Jimmy especially, even though he wasn’t confident enough to pick the Falcons to win, when asked the question about what’s happened to the Giants flipped the question and made it clear that the Falcons happened to the Giants.

Big Lou, that link to Schultz’s blog told a story. MR has decided to own this team. MR spoke and the entire team listened. We got 100% effort out of every player on this team and guess what? They discovered that they are a very good football team to be reckoned with. This game made a statement! We are the Falcons and we will kick your butt. Winning is fun! We like winning! We just needed someone to tell us how good we are. I am more optimistic about the future of this team than I have ever been. Forty six F’ing years I have been down this road but I have always let that little 1% of reality creep into my hopes for a SB, and I have always been graced with reality.
I truly believe that this team, if they keep playing like they did today, we just might get to have that parade we have all looked forward to for so many years.

amazing game today…
I’d say that was by far the best game in the Mike Smith era.
The gameplans on both sides of the ball were great. Someone on NFL Network pointed out how Ryan only had 28 attempts today. He said that the offense flows so much better when Ryan’s not having to throw it 40+ times a game.
The run game was good. The pass game was solid.
But, the big ups go to the O-Line. That was by far one of the best games they’ve played all season. They kept Ryan relatively clean. There was a point where it seemed the Giants pass rush was starting to pick up, but it never sustained.
D E F E N S E!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quick question, is there anybody in here that’s really scared of playing any of the QB’s in the NFC playoff picture? Not to take anything away from them, but I’m oooooooober confident in Mike Nolan’s ability to rattle the best of em’.

Snelling ran like a man possessed at the end of the game. If only I could be convinced that he would have those results against a defense that hadn’t already quit, I would be a little more prone to subscribing to the start Snelling chants.
Rather than that, I’ll pay a little homage to Koetter for getting over 100 yards rushing using all the weapons at his disposal. The Falcons may not have a dominant RB this year, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a productive rushing attack.

JB, by the end of that game, all the Giants wanted to do was get the hell off that field. If they had given Snell the ball one more time, the Giants defenders would have let him walk into the endzone just so they could get back to the sidelines. And that’s how we should be making other defenses feel when they come into the Thriller Dome. Not trying to take anything away from Snelling, because he did exactly what he should have been doing in that situation; continuing the beatdown until they cried No Mas.

He shows up in the backfield – maybe 3 times? Our LB corps was terrific today. And, Vance Walker should be out starter. Bierman had another excellent game. Looks like Nolan is figuring out his players. This was a good win. Assante is another key, crucial and SAVVY acquisition by TD. If we keep our offense playing dynamically, then our complaints about Smitty Ball should ebb. Tony G had a fine game, as did JJ. Like I said, we have no problems at the slot receiver.

The Falcons may have played it safe in a few games and let teams seem to get back in it, but never have they let a 28 point lead evaporate. But yet tomorrow, the 49er’s will probably still be considered a better team in some idiot’s Power Rankings. Even if SF happens to find a way not to lose this game, they are still hot garbage.

Man I loved that quick snap Brady used to wear down the 49er defense and marched right down the field. I’d like to see Matt incorporate a few of these little nuances in his game as well. I remember seeing a Giant player trying to get off the field when Matt was under center and thinking he should snap the ball so we can get an automatic first down. Matt had great protection all day and played like a baller. I’m ready to see us attack our remaining opponents the way we did the Giants and take our home field advantage. Go Falcons!!!

The way the Falcons played offensively yesterday can’t be overlooked.
And it shouldn’t be overlooked by the coaching staff. The way that everybody seemed to get involved in the offense was what I’ve been clamoring for. I understand we have two stud receivers and an all-time great at TE. But, it’s absurd to suggest that HD can’t contribute in this offense. If anything, he should be getting more looks because he should see favorable coverages and matchups with all the attention going to RW84, JJ11, and TG. Ryan did a great job of spreading the ball around and not locking in on one guy. I think it helps when he has the protection and can actually scan the field. HD had a few big plays, and I would hope that it continues. Keep looking his way 3-4 times a game for a potential big play. It gives defenses more to worry about, and makes it even tougher to matchup.
You had HD getting involved. Mike Cox even caught a ball and made a great play for a 1st down. RW84 – JJ11 – TG all played critical roles. Turner – Quizz – Snelling all got touches and actually ran and caught the football out the backfield effectively.
You gotta utilize everybody.

I mean, their Giants and Pats got beatdown on the same weekend. I know the Pats made a game of it – but they got pushed around for a good half. I will say this though, I hope Smoetter looks at the tape of that game [if we see SF in the playoffs] from the 2nd half on, because the Pats definitely showed something in their comeback. They went no huddle [because they had to being down 28], sped up the tempo of the game, and exposed that Niners man coverage. No huddle helped to slow down that Niners pass rush, and Brady carved up the back end of that defense.

Yet, the Falcons left a lot of points on the field. The Giants had more yards than the Falcons going into the second half. I’m happy about the win, but using Turner is going to hurt the Falcons in the future against stout defenses like the Seahawks/49ers.

Seems like quite a few people are missing out on enjoying one of the truly great seasons in Falcons history. Squabbling about who said what and who should be playing and who is a bad coach and all manner of foolishness. We’ve got a 12-2 team that is going about their business in exemplary fashion. Just got done catching up, reading the post game (new blog post). I am really surprised, not one comment complementing the play of the offensive line. IMHO, They easily turned in the best perfomance of the year…maybe the last 2 years. Good job O Line. Gotta give Koetter some props as well for the scheme he put together. Roddy White was gonna be active for the game, Period! but as a decoy more than anything else, if some you think it was coincidence that Harry Douglas had a nice game against the Giants, wasn’t luck…it was game planned for him to get the bulk of Roddy’s plays. Good job Koetter.
We all know what our offense is capable of when they play at their best…but I’d like to take a minute, look over at the other side of the ball. Our defense is very underrated, this Defense is the same defense that shut Dough Martin down when he was running all over everybody, before he played us ofcourse. We held Drew Brees to NO TD since he began the streak in 2009…We handed the Giants their fisrt shut out since the 2006 season, I tell you, defenses that play as a cohesive unit make the aforementioned accomplisments.
…And watch Vance Walker, his snaps have been on the increase since the game against the Tampa Bay Bucs. He is gradually, IMO, becoming the anchor of the DLine. Go back and watch him on some of the run plays against the Giants, he clogs space, stuffs the run…and he slashes gaps to rush the QB. Vance is the real deal.

In my excitement, I almost jumped on here a few times yesterday, but decided to just let the game digest and see what I felt/thought about it this morning.
In a nutshell: I’m stunned.
For the last two years, it’s been evident to everyone who pays attention that the weaknesses of the Atlanta Falcons is O-line and D-line. Yesterday, both of these lines dominated their opponent. And in the case of the O-line, against a team that’s been lauded as having the best front four in football.
There’s not enough accolades to go around for MR2 and his skill players, but I believe we’ve all anticipated their potential. I’m just stunned that the Falcons controlled the LOS so effectively throughout the game. I just didn’t anticipate that happening — against the Giants, no less.
I think the numerous draws and screens set the stage for the O-line to succeed. The run game was more effective because the Giants’ D was kept off-balance by the unpredictability of the play-calling (prior to garbage time). Also, they attacked the edge more than the middle. (Thought it kind of strange that they used MT33 on the edges and sent JR32 into the middle.)
Any time a team pitches a shutout in the NFL, it’s noteworthy. To have done it against the Giants is huge. Let’s see what the Birds can do with the momentum.

I agree BL, Turners touches should be limited to pounding the others teams DL when we have leads the the 4th quarter. I noticed some runs Turner had against the Giants, they were not maximized because of his plodding style of running. Some of those holes (our much maligned OL) created, could have been exploited more if Quizz, Snelling, or GOD forbid Antoine would of had the opportunity to carry the rock.
I like the “Bench Turner” thing. Kinda sounds like a heading for a petition.

Just read Peter King’s MMQB…and while I said that I don’t care anymore what they say anymore and will just enjoy, this was an exception to the rule….on the not caring part, his “fine fifteen” has New England, Denver, San Francisco and Houston ahead of us. Whatever, I know we can hang with those teams and beat them on any Sunday, Super or otherwise. New England has no D, they use their offense as a weapon, and while that works great against some teams, elite QBs have been OWNED by the Falcons this season. Denver, no comment. WE know the truth there, and haven’t forgotten the score. (You know, head-to.head is USUALLY pretty telling…aw, whatever
) San Fran is pretty good, probably the scariest of the four, but I know we can take them. Houston is a lot like Atlanta three years ago…can’t seem to beat the teams they really, really need to beat. We’d beat them too. Like I said, I don’t care what he says, I have my opinions, and they are shiny and bright in Atlanta’s favor. And the 12-2 record backs me up on that.
What I DO care about is this diarrhea:
“On Sunday morning, Cruz wrote on Twitter: “Today’s game is for you Jack.”
On one shoe, Cruz wrote in black Sharpie: “Jack Pinto My Hero.” On the other, “RIP Jack Pinto.
Falcons 34, Giants 0. Cruz wishes he, and the team, could have played better.”
“There is no way to segue to football without seeming totally crass, so forgive me. Before I do, praise to the Giants, in Atlanta, and the Jets tonight, in Nashville, for remembering Sandy Hook Elementary School on their helmets. And to the Patriots, New England’s team, for the Newtown helmet decals (right), and for sending up 26 flares honoring the school victims during a prolonged moment of silence before their game with the 49ers.”
Peter, we know you’re a North-East homer. But really, this isn’t the platform to say that these teams care more and honor victims more than any of the other teams in this league, or any other human being on this earth. This isn’t a measuring contest, to see who cares the most. Appropriately, if you want to bring this in, write that ALL of the players and teams and fans are mourning. Because they are. I’m going to chalk this up to being emotional, and are proud that these teams went ahead and put decals on their helmets. But really. That doesn’t make them “more aware” or “more active” or more anything. It doesn’t need to be singled out like this. I read this and felt like my team was the bad guy in a badly written script or something , for not letting Cruz fulfill his promise. That shouldn’t be happening, or sound like this. You lost some serious respect points, what of them that I had for you for your football knowledge and writing. The narrow mindedness is just too much.

This article has some very key phrases and comments in it, some from the players, some just observations. Worth a read, and so I’ll post the whole thing. One of the truly biggest things is the leadership exhibited by Matt Ryan…we didn’t know about what he said and did until now. This guy is the real deal, if you didn’t know this before. Also, some key comments about how Ryan acts when he’s on his game.
http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2012/12/16/ryan-asks-for-more-gives-more-at-right-time-for-falcons/?cxntfid=blogs_jeff_schultz_blog
On the day following the Falcons’ loss at Carolina, Matt Ryan stood up in a team meeting and issued a mandate to his teammates.
“He told everybody, ‘I want an extra 30 minutes from everybody this week,’” Roddy White recalled. “In the film room, on the field, everywhere. And he said, ‘If you give me an extra 30 minutes, I’ll give you an extra hour.’”
Now, it would be presumptuous to suggest that one moment from this team’s leader is going to propel the Falcons to the postseason success that has been missing from the team and the quarterback’s respective resumes. But Sunday’s game has to count for something.
The Falcons saved their best performance of the season for when it mattered most — in December, against the defending Super Bowl champion and a week after they went splat in Charlotte. They body-slammed the New York Giants 34-0, moving a little closer to clinching home field through the NFL playoffs and, presumably, at least a smidgen closer to acceptance in the eyes of critics.
When a score is this lopsided, there are a lot of reasons for it. The defense had two early interceptions that were turned into 10 points and blanked an opponent for the first time since 2008. The offensive line dominated one of the NFL’s best front four. But at the center was Ryan, who outplayed Eli Manning. He completed 23 of 28 for 270 yards for three touchdowns and no interceptions. He completed a 12-yard laser to Tony Gonzalez in the end zone for one score, a 40-yard bomb to Julio Jones streaking down the left side for another.
Contrast that with Manning, who was held to 13-of-25 passing with two interceptions and was shut out for the first time in his career. (The Giants’ hadn’t been blanked since 1996.)
What will this mean for how Manning and Ryan are viewed in a few weeks when the playoffs open? Probably little. It’s no secret quarterbacks are defined by postseason success. A Ryan fan is going to lose a debate to a Manning fan every day on who’s the better quarterback for one simple reason: the ring finger.
But consider this comparison: Ryan is now a remarkable 55-21 (.724) in his NFL career in regular season. Relatively speaking, Manning is good but unremarkable at 77-56 (.579). Ryan has a better quarterback rating and a superior touchdown-to-interception ratio (Ryan: 122-60; Manning: 205-144). But in the playoffs Ryan is 0-3 and Manning is 8-3, including two Super Bowl titles, two Super Bowl MVP awards and last year’s 24-2 victory over Ryan and the Falcons in the Meadowlands.
No regular season game can make up for a playoff loss. But Ryan admitted that January game drove him “a little bit” this week. It also, at least in part, motivated him to issue the extra-30-minutes mandate to teammates.
“Roddy was listening?” Ryan said, laughing, when told about White’s comments.
Had Ryan ever made such a request before?
“I think that’s the first time. I’m learning. I’m getting old.”
Later, he added: “It was important for us as a team and in the locker room how we rebounded from last week. As coach [Mike] Smith preaches all the time, it’s how you respond to these situations [that defines you].”
The entire team did that. Center Todd McClure, a 13-year veteran, felt an edge all week, and called this “one of the best wins I’ve ever been a part of.
“There was a little bit of pressure — I’m not going to lie to you. But sometimes that causes you to play your best football. It means a lot for this team and it meant a lot for us on the line. And you see what happens when we can give Matt some time.”
Ryan was locked in. He looked it and felt it.
White again: “You can tell when he’s on. because he starts calling plays really fast, trying to get to the line of scrimmage because he’s in a groove and he wants to put pressure on the defense.”
This is what Ryan and the Falcons can look like when everything clicks. This is what they hope it looks like in a few weeks.

Ryan threw for 270 yards and 3 TDs, completing freakin’ 82% against the best front four in the League…and he doesn’t even get a mention. Not one clip of him throwing a TD.
In fact, all the clips shown were of Manning and a couple of our defense. That was all. Ultimate disrespect, it was like our offense wasn’t even there.

Amazing how the Packers must suddenly be the NFC’s best after beating a hapless, imploding Chicago squad. I mean, two things….
1) The Falcons just WHOOOPED the Giants and shut them out. Ummm…is this the same Green Bay team that got beat down by the Giants 38-10 a mere three weeks ago?
2) San Franciso just beat New England, who has been beating everybody (tore the Texans up, and THAT was supposed to be the best team in the NFL). Ummm…is this the same Green Bay team that lost to the 49ers to start the season?

The sickest part of all of this is that it’s not about the tragedy in Connecticut. No, that tragedy is used as a vehicle to:
1) Take several cheap shots at the Falcons.
What does what Cruz tried to do for a family of a deceased child have to do with a helmet-to-helmet hit by Chris Hope? What does it have to do with some interview in which Roddy White said something about Victor Cruz that wasn’t flattering?
2) Try to explain away the loss and color it as a superior win in realiy and in comparison to what happened on the field.
Oh, the Giants tried so hard to win for this child and this school and those families, but their hearts were too heavy, they just couldn’t do it. Just like they tried to win one for the Hurricane Sandy victims, but again, they just felt so noble and so martyred and they just couldn’t do on the field what they needed to do because they cared so much more about the victims of families.
This is by far the saddest, sickest, most sordid thing I’ve read….topping all the drivel from the Bounty Gate scandal… by a long shot .
Ian O’Connor did not HONOR those families and those victims. He make a mockery of them. This had nothing to do with who beat whom on the football field. That is for a different article, a sports-only article.
If you want to write about a tragedy you don’t understand nor can you relate to, then write about what players, coaches, team staff did OFF the field. Not what they did ON it.
The Giants got the hell beat out of them. There is no honor in relating that to what they MEANT to do. I also don’t buy the whole “they weren’t playing that game to get into the playoffs, to win their division, to do anything football related.”
Oh really? So are we going to write articles about how every team that loses during Breast Cancer Awareness can’t concentrate?
Write about the tragedy and show how HUMANS are relating to HUMANS, how PEOPLE are trying to help and comfort PEOPLE.
Stop making it about football, because it is NOT about football, and football is NOT about this tragedy. The two are irretrievably separate.
I’m glad I’m not within reach of this a$$hole. I’m not mad about him taking a shot at my team as much as I am that he used one of the most awful things to happen anywhere in the U.S. to do it with. Shameful. Just pure, plain shameful.

And I submit this –
What about the shooting and deaths in Colorado? Didn’t the Broncos lose to the Giants that week? Where’s the article on the connection between the two?
To suggest that only the heart-heavy Giants felt awful about this tragedy is what O’Connor and his fan followers are doing. This is insane.
Media bias is the worst kind.
You owe Colorado an article of pure attrition. You scum-sucking MFers. How dare you trample on a community’s tragedy while trying to act like you’re championing it. I am beside myself with rage. And I’d pay the ESPN subscriber price just to get in there so I can say it…but I don’t want those bungholes to get any of my money.

Acting like it’s a good thing to try to “own” the mourning and loss.. Stupid. No one wants the loss, you silly bastards, and if it was such a great story, why did you a$$holes at ESPN and SI start writing about the team tributes only AFTER the Giants got beaten? Reason: Because they would rather write about that then write about how the Giants got the taste smacked out of their mouths on Sunday. That’s why.

BR — Can’t say I’m surprised at anything that comes out of MTV Sports also known as ESPN. I am a little taken aback by the readiness that they feel the need to try and use or include this terrible tragedy in sports at all. By the way, if Victor Cruz or any other athlete didn’t feel up to par before the game, then they shouldn’t have played. Finally, there’s plenty of other players besides Cruz that got their @ss whipped on Sunday as well.

Now, continue to consider yesterday’s game – it was an amazing display of good football. The Giants NEEDED the victory to prevent Washington and Dallas from becoming tied with them. For whatever reason, the entire team came out flat and played poorly. I’d say it was the Falcon influence. Excellent game all around. And yes, I hope folks realize that going up tempo – which ryan has excelled at for four years now, does have a negative impact on your oppositions defense. Our best players for that type of offensive dynamic are Snelling and Quizz. Both can block, both can catch, and both are quicker to the hole with more lateral agility than Mike Turner. I also believe I complimented the O line play. I really wish the playoffs started now. We simply need to keep our guys healthy.

Regarding Harry Douglas, schematically it would be wise to got to him right of the bat, get the defense leaning toward him, then hitting any of our other big 3 guys. If done right – and the Giants game we did it right – our offense is dynamic and unstoppable. Folks also forget – we held SD to less than a TD – that was the first time in 150 games that SD failed to score a TD. I suspect Nolan works on things against teams it does not matter if we win against. Against other top 25% teams, he really schemes to disrupt the opposition. Both Mannings, Rivers, Brees AND we knocked RG3 out of the game – made AZ change their QB’s. Our defense is pretty dominant. We have a very, very good – possibly excellent game. Which is why I’m giving the Carolina game a mulligan.

Sorry man, but the defense will not lean to HD when the other big three are out there, unless he scores a TD or something. I do agree that we should set him up more. If you understand modern liberalism, most of them are narcissistic idiots. That narcissism is usually magnified by success at collecting multiple college degrees – usually a slew of masters as though the idiot can make decision on which field to excel in – and, does not care how much it costs to collect those diplomas. The vast majority of the folks in the NE – NJ, NYC and connecticut are conspicuous narcissistic idiots. They can’t man up and admit error or failure – which is why you have the distraction stories now on the Giants. They are also painfully gullible in believing profound BS – which is why when a tragedy such as the elementary school shooting occurs – they fail to level blame and assign accountability to the individual who perpetrated the crime. Instead, they blame some nebulous, big notion boogeyman. So, you will soon see regs banning AR -15 type weapons; and banning “high capacity” magazines. Liberals feel compelled to react to a random, rare act – which is why they are frequently called knee jerk. Selah.

You gotta utilize everybody.” – Wabe
It is my enjoy the win day off so not gonna get too deep or embattled but glad you picked up on this. Atlanta fans should be quite familiar with a pitcher named Tom Glavine, a guy who couldn’t overpower you but thru location and MIXING up his pitches became successful. Our RB backfield is not an overpowering flamethrowing unit and should use the same philosphy…which we finally did a better job of yesterday. It wasn’t great and the stats aren’t sexy but we did keep the Vagiants off balance and most importantly showed our coaches can learn. Throwing 84 mph Turner batting practice fastballs with no movement down the center off the plate non-stop was becoming more than an indictment against our coaches. Yesterday was like a minor leaguer getting called up and while not dominant showed he could locate and change speeds, a good sign that with more practice a new Glavine could emerge in the playoffs.

I’ll go back to my original statement, I am having one helleva time watching this team. Frustrating at times, sure, but I always had this belief that they were “sandbagging” a bit (as Mark Bradley put it so eloquently) and they were trying their best to get a full game together. Well, now they have that template, they know what it looks like. THAT, may friends, is more than you can say about any Falcons team since 1998. They now know exactly what it looks like, the blue-print so-to-say to beat the living snot out of ANY opponent in the NFL. And it’s just in time for the big dance. Perfect. Timing.

“1) Simple Steamroll – where does this game rank for you?” Been a fan since ‘66. Can’t remember a more sustained, dominating performance against a highly-regarded opponent.
“2) Is this the best game in the Mike Smith Era?” In my opinion, yes. So far . . .
“3) How does the coaching rank for you?” Well-called game. Timely adjustments on offense and defense. Not only was Manning kept off-balance, but so was Perry Fewell. The Falcons’ offense just kept “side-stepping” defensive adjustments. It was beautiful to watch.
“4) Is Ryan taking that final, next step?” Hmmm; not sure. I think he performed up to the level we’ve anticipated (hoped?) that he could. Yesterday’s level of play was expected for him in his fifth year. I think it’s the best game he played as a Falcon.
“5) Is the defense peaking for the playoffs?” The Falcons’ D is just having fun balling out, wide open, attacking offenses. They’re starting to play with that philosophy as a coherent unit, which makes them very dangerous. They played with a combination of higher urgency and higher discipline against the Giants. I certainly hope to see that carry over into the playoffs.
“6) Just a one game surge, or are the Falcons finally clicking?” I think they got up for this game because it was important to them. I hope they build on the momentum and don’t fall prey to the notion that they can turn on/turn off their level of performance at will. Again, after being a Falcon fan since ‘66, I’m sure you can understand my CAUTIOUS optimism.
“7) Your thoughts on the running back mix?” Finally! Used the available weapons and mixed them up in a way to keep the defense off balance. More of this, please! (Still, confused by having MT33 attack the edge and JR32 attack the middle. Maybe that was the point: confusion.)
“8.) Can Smith and Co. bottle that preparation and practice for the playoffs?” More than anything else at this level of competition, that’s their job. I think AB made that pretty clear last January.
“9) Most importantly, can the Falcons keep it going?” Yes. They can. They have every resource at their disposal to do so. Question is, will they? Even though I’m conditioned to doubt, I think they will. If they show up to play like that every week, there’s not a team out there that can beat ‘em.

6) Just a one game surge, or are the Falcons finally clicking?
D3’s crux question! Dan Reeves was quoted last week about how much he enjoyed the IDENTITY of his superbowl team. Our Falcons have been claiming to have an identity, always talking about their high level of confidence and high standards, but it seemed more like a locker room thing. We kept wondering what the H that identity was. Then the GAME happened. We saw it! Now that they have proved to themselves that they can bring that identity from the locker room to the field, their aggregate confidence in various phases will harden into concrete. I think we have the makings of a juggernaut.

1. Biggest win in history:
Hard to put this in front of our road wins against the Vikings or Green Bay, but it is the biggest regular season win in history.
2. Biggest win in Smittys tenure. No doubt.
3. Great Coaching I have come to expect, no turnovers, few penalties, overall smart football. Playcalling? It is always genius when it works, but if I never see that HD end around out an empty backfield again, I won’t be disappointed.
4. Final Step for Ryan….He took a big step this off season, it was one more inevitable milestone. Final step? He nah, he has a few more to go…He will have bad games again, even SB QBs have a bad game now an then, but the arrow is up for sure.
5. Our defense has played best in the biggest games this season, that is a very, very good sign. Except for a small meltdown in the 1st half against New Orleans, we have played very big in big spots. Anytime you take 5 away from the manning brothers…..I am guessing that ain’t ever happed before.
6. Running Back Mix? It ain’t our strength, but it is good enough. As everyone else, might like to see Snelling get a few more carries, I think we are going to really see what our RBs can do over the next few weeks.
7. Can we bottle it for the playoffs. Hope so.
8. Can we keep it going? If we do, we hoist the Lombardi. But really, the difference between this team and previous teams is our D, they are just having fun, flowing to the ball, and confusing QBs. Hope we can keep the tacking intensity up…..

O-line played up to expectations, maybe beyond them.
Ryan did exactly what he needed to do, and what any elite QB would/should do – asked his team to raise their effort, to take an extra half hour doing whatever they thought they should to put the extra work in. Then promised them that he’d do twice as much.
That’s taking total responsibility, that’s raising your accountability level above that of your peers. THAT is true leadership, not settling for new personal bests and an 11-2 record. That’s raising the bar.
Ryan’s performance may not have been the best that we’ve seen, but the work he put into getting back to where he could perform like this is what separates this from any other “mundane” 82% completion, 270 yard, 3 TD/0 INT performances.
Ryan LED this team – in practice and on the field.
THAT was the next step.

DePlane – to steal your phrase “the Birds forced NY to lay a Giant Egg in the Dome”. I love it!
Zoomie – Quizz is actually quite effective running between the tackles. He’s small, which makes him hard to find amongst all the behemoths, he’s quick, has good vision and makes good moves. He does not have the straight line speed that would allow him to turn the corner in the NFL on a consistent basis, however.

Another thing not to be overlooked, we beat a number of “bad” teams, but we played them at critical junctures in their season, when beating us could have really turned their season around. We crushed teams and sent them into death spirals…..
Carolina first game, they were embarrassed by NY, had 10 days to prepair, and a W would have gotten them .500, only to go 1-3 and stick that towel on Cams head.
Cards…after starting 3-0, Coming off a bye needing a W to get to 4-5 and to stay in the Wild Card hunt….Only to go 3-6 and continue the losing spiral.
Oakland, a sky high 1-1 raiders team coming off a bye, looking to “right the ship” after beating the Steelers in week 1.
Eagles, a 3-1 eagles team with superbowl aspirations.
Basically, we played some “bad” teams, but all of them were playing for their life at make at critical points of their season. Funny how ESPN leaves that sorta stuff out.

Even New Orleans 2, they had NFC South aspirations, and we sent them packing. We took everyones best, and I have said, and taken abuse by saying “there are no bad teams in the NFL”, and maybe that is a little strong, but there are no untalented teams, and any team is capable of putting a beating on anyone if you don’t buckle your chin strap.

Awesome win, totally dominating in every way. The Giants should have had some points but they made some questionable decisions and our Defence rose to the occasion. I was impressed with the O-line play and really hope it can continue. I think some of the O-line credit goes to the mix of RB’s and play calling. That sh*t bout Skip and Stephen was hilarious. Interesting, I find 4 teams with 1000 yard receivers…
the 80 Chargers of Air Coryelle,
89 Redskins,
95 run and shoot falcons of Glanville (Terence Mathis, Bert Emmanual, and Eric Metcalf)
and the 04 colts.
My gut tell me it is a sign of a weakness, for although it speaks highly of the receivers, it makes me think teams are not spreading the ball around enough. If teams are regularly putting up 4000-5000 yard seasons, it would stand to reason we would see a lot more.
Really that is why getting HD involved is crucial. I have been the first to dump on him, but it has to be the scheme, chemistry with Ryan, or something.

Geo,
I’ve been raving about Snelling since last year. The man is a beast when given an opportunity. As D3 noted, the Giants were running their first team defense while Snelling was running behind our 2nd team offensive line. The man is strong and runs hard.
Also as someone else wrote, the punt returner has to go. We have Antone Smith and Chris Owens (fast and very fast respectively) and Tim Toone (who has no fear) that we should give a shot. It certainly cannot get any worse and in the playoffs, may cost us if we don’t fix it NOW!!!

JR32 was not effective between the tackles Sunday. I understand the concept of losing him behind the big bodies, but it didn’t pan out that way at all. He is quicker getting to the edge and has the cutting ability to hit a fleeting hole and to twist defenders out of their shoes; he’s been making that work for him on the edge this season. It was an interesting change-up, so I’m looking forward to see how he’s used from this point forward.
When it comes to grinding out those tough yards in the middle, Quizz is a short, stout, strong runner who holds his own and always falls forward. On the down side, that forward fall only nets one yard at a time . . .

Found that ESPN hater article saying the Falcons are frauds after the Giants smack down.
Here it is:
“After a season full of nail-biters, the Atlanta Falcons finally got a blowout win Sunday, stomping the New York Giants 34-0. They outgained the Giants in total offense (394 to 256), first downs (22 to 10) and also forced more turnovers (three to zero). It was the first time this year the Falcons have thoroughly outplayed a quality opponent. It was not, however, a “statement” win. It was just one game in a long season, and a clear outlier at that, not a new standard of excellence.
Atlanta was outside the top 10 last week in Football Outsiders’ rankings, and one game out of 14 won’t change that too much. Even if you’re not a believer in Football Outsiders’ methods, recent history is full of so-called “statement” games that didn’t say much about either team when all was said and done.
The Falcons stand at 12-2 after Sunday’s win, but Football Outsiders’ system estimates that they “should” have won only about eight of those games, with four extra victories coming through luck in the form of soft scheduling, random turnovers or other factors. That’s rarefied air when it comes to overachievement. Since 1991, 11 other teams have finished with winning records and at least three more actual wins than estimated wins. A quick look back at those overachievers paints an ominous picture for this year’s Falcons:
Overachieving teams, 1991-2011
Year Team Actual Wins Estimated Wins Difference Fate Playoff wins 1992 IND 9 5.5 3.5 Missed Playoffs 0 1993 DET 10 7.0 3.0 Lost wild-card game 0 1996 MIN 9 5.7 3.3 Lost wild-card game 0 1998 ARI 9 5.8 3.2 Lost divisional round 1 1999 IND 13 9.5 3.5 Lost divisional round 0 2001 CHI 13 9.6 3.4 Lost divisional round 0 2002 GB 12 9.0 3.0 Lost wild-card game 0 2003 CAR 11 7.7 3.3 Lost Super Bowl 3 2003 STL 12 8.2 3.8 Lost divisional round 0 2004 ATL 11 7.7 3.3 Lost conference championship 1 2006 SEA 9 5.4 3.6 Lost divisional round 1
As the table shows, only two of these 11 teams reached the conference title game and only two others won even one playoff game. The other seven either missed the playoffs outright or went one-and-done, including some teams whose first game came at home after a first-round bye. The most recent team to suffer that fate: the 2003 St. Louis Rams, who went 12-4 but lost their first playoff game at home to Carolina. That Carolina team, it’s worth noting, also overachieved, and was far and away the most successful of the bunch once the playoffs started.
Why are the Falcons so low in FO’s rankings? Though they’ve lost only two games, they’ve been in severe danger of losing many others. Seven of their wins have come by eight points or fewer, and many of those have come over bottom-dwellers such as Oakland, Philadelphia and Arizona. They should be scolded, not celebrated, for a three-point comeback win at home over the lowly Raiders, a team that has lost to the Dolphins, Broncos, Ravens, Saints and Bengals by at least 20 points apiece.
Atlanta has been particularly weak in the running game, on both sides of the ball. The Falcons have averaged only 3.7 yards per carry on their own rushes (29th in the league), but given up 4.9 yards per carry on opponents’ runs (30th).
Some people reading this (many of them, no doubt, residing in the 404 area code) will insist that the Falcons have the best record in the NFC, and that means they’re the best team in the NFC, fancy computer numbers be damned. Even those readers, though, should take caution and not get overly excited by one game. Recent history is littered with teams that made “statements” by beating playoff-bound teams in December, then fell flat on their face in the playoffs:
• In 2008, the Steelers were the victims of a “statement” win, losing 31-14 to Tennessee in Week 16. The Titans finished 13-3 but lost their first playoff game to Baltimore. The Steelers finished 12-4 and won the Super Bowl.
• The 2010 Patriots won 14 games, including victories over playoff-bound Jets and Bears teams in back-to-back weeks by a combined score of 81-10. They then lost their first playoff game, at home, to the Jets.
• Last year, a pair of NFC teams made “statement” December wins before going up in smoke. The Saints crushed Atlanta 45-16 on their way to a 13-3 mark, and the 49ers manhandled Pittsburgh and also went 13-3. The Saints beat the Lions in the postseason, but were promptly beaten by the 49ers, who in turn were beaten by the Giants.
Games like that make Atlanta’s win Sunday seem much less relevant. It was the best game the Falcons have played this year, but that, by definition, makes it the fluke, not the standard. It was an important win for the Falcons because it brought them one step closer to clinching home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. But it would be a mistake to think they’re significantly better now than they were one week ago.”

Big Lou, agree the scheme was key. That’s what I’ve been hoping the braintrust would figure out, since we don’t have an elite line, and we can’t just keep asking Ryan to save our ass, that’s too much for any individual. But it is never just one (scheme) or the other (performance). Scheme can’t make someone play great, only put them in a position to excel. No doubt, coaching stepped up big time last week.

BL @ 9:26: Agree all around. The key to defeating SF’s defense is to deprive them of the ability to focus their firepower. Keep them spread out, forcing them to defend the entire width and depth of the field on every down. Unlike most teams in the NFL, the Falcons have the skill players at every position to make this happen.
Sad to say that I haven’t watched the Seahawks’ defense yet this year, so I don’t know how I would scheme to attack them.
What concerns me about both the 49ers and the Saltwater Chickens is their dual-threat QBs. This has given the Falcons’ defense problems this year. It appears to be next, new, shiny, up & coming trend in the NFL.

I’m feeling very optimistic about the playoffs. There’s not an opponent in the picture the Falcons can’t beat. My optimism is based on what the Falcons have done this season.
12-2, alone, is significant. The experts (from pundits to pinheads) can whine about our “easy” schedule all they want, but I think Matty Bicep’s theory of “no bad NFL teams” is relevant in the context he gave, particularly in a post above. I agree with him that some of those “bad” teams we beat showed up with a lot at stake and played accordingly. The second Carolina game is an example.
ATL vs. NO games are in a category all their own, and Brees always makes them tough. Still, we won one and barely lost the other (without Spoon+).
The Giants game wasn’t a “statement.” It was several statements and a declaration — particularly following the Carolina disaster. In my opinion, the Giants beat-down began in the 4th quarter of the Carolina loss. Despite the pressure and chaos, Ryan and his receivers worked faster and with more precision. Too late to win, but I think they did some useful R&D on the field.
A while back, I remarked that, with two new coordinators, the team was still a team in transition. I still think that’s true, and it’s influenced what we’ve seen this season (good and bad). I think it may also have something to do with the missing “killer instinct.” Maybe that’s all Smitty, but the players have to have it too, and it comes from confidence and honed skills.
The Falcons aren’t just peaking. The Birds are molting. Those feathers are dropping off, revealing the gleaming steel of a flight of F-16s.
(Lordy, what a cheezy last line! So bad, I had to leave it in.)

It is fairly interesting – ever since that Lions player mocked Tebow’s prayer stance, the Lions have spiraled out of control and into last place. The Jets, who picked up Tebow on a publicity stunt and have since relegated him to the bench without using him much at all, are now suffering embarassingly inept losses, and the team appears to have quit. Here’s what I want to see…….
As the same as you all, I want to see the Falcons use this as a true springboard to the playoffs. Yes, it will be tough bringing the same energy to playing two teams that are done for the year, especially Detroit who is 4-10, but they have to find a way to do it. This could be the true catalyst for a deep playoff run. If we play like we did on Sunday, we can beat anyone, anywhere.
Also, they shouldn’t need any motivation knowing full well and good that a win in Detroit locks up home-field advantage for us for the entire playoffs, where we are really tough to beat. Sure, Aaron Rodgers torched our @sses to pieces, but that was BVG’s defense, not Master Mike Nolan’s.
Will we go out dominate every single game from here on out, including the playoffs? Doubtful. But I hope we see the same energy we saw vs. the Giants. We know we won’t see total destruction and shutouts, but I want to see the offense, particularly, come out with the same creativity, energy, and determination to get all playmakers involved. I think that was one of the best reasons we had a great day on offense, which was getting all guys involved early, instead of just settling on our standard Gonzo and Roddy stop routes and occasional Julio deep throw with the occasional screen mixed in every once in a blue moon. That was the most unpredictable and creative I’ve seen the offense look all season, and I think a large part of it is due to the determined mandate to get as many involved early as possible.

I hate to say it, but if the Falcons win the Super Bowl 34-0, that won’t be enough to win the respect we think we’re due. Where there’s ill will, there’s a way.
Historically, nobody remembers who LOST the Super Bowl. Only a Falcons SB championship could change that. It’s all about Peyton and Cam and RG3 and Brees and blah-blah-blah…

Feb 4th 2013:
“It was a down year in the NFL in 2012-2013, resulting in a Superbowl victory for a decidedly uninspiring Atlanta Falcons franchise. If there was ever a year for a Superbowl win with asterisks, this is the one. After limping into the post-season with a 14-2 record, reflecting scant few wins by a margin greater than 7 points, the Falcons eked out one post-season win after another, getting lucky bounces and questionable calls against teams that were clearly their superiors. Doubtless, we’ll soon see the true nature of this franchise over the following months as the football world watches them squander yet another draft. Sooner or later, this team will be exposed, and your trusty ESPN experts and commentators will be on the spot to cover the story for our Northeastern fanbase in grueling, exacting detail. Stay tuned!” — Reported by Truly A. D*ckhead, ESPN News

Falcon fans have every right to be excited about a big win and a gaudy 12 -2 record. However, it is still a regular season win and as a Giant fan I have seen first hand that it really doesn’t matter until you do it in the playoffs. No team was hotter than the 2007 Patriots (16- 0) or last years Packers (15 – 1) and you may remember how their seasons ended. All I’m saying is that playoff football is a bird of a different feather…good luck and hope to see y’all again.

I saw exactly what I wanted to see on Sunday. A complete game. And now, I want to see it again Saturday night. They have to start stringing these together now. The reason why I think it’s a big deal is because we haven’t see that ‘complete game’ out of these Falcons, at least not one of this caliber. When they play like this on both sides of the ball, there isn’t a team in the league that can beat em’.
The main thing at this point is to continue to string them together. Don’t take your foot off the gas. Momentum is huge at this point, and the Falcons gotta continue to build on this past weekend in the remaining two seasons.
Regarding the respect thing, I can get it from the fans perspective. But, guys like TG and RW84 gotta keep it in the locker room at this point. They should know at this point that regular season success ain’t gonna get them any respect after the past postseason failures. Use that chip on your shoulder to stay motivated and then showcase it come playoff time.

If the Falcons play the rest of our games, including the playoffs, like we played last game, there should be some other head coaches making their best plans. We have 32 teams playing for one thing and it’s going to be about who wants it the most. We have waited 46 long and agonizing years to have a team that is not scared of any other team out there. A team that has shown that, when playing to capacity is a dangerous team.
The A’holes that think that last week was not a statement game? Let them walk into our locker room and say that. I truly believe this team has the ingrediant that we have been missing for years. I am worried about the threat of a mobile QB against our defense…
IMO, it’s looking more and more like we’ll wind up drawing Seattle in the 1st round.
As of now, they’re the 5 seed, and they’ll likely finish with the 5 seed, regardless of whether they win this weekend or not.
If they win, they’d need SF to lose the following week against the Cardinals to take the division. They’ll likely draw the winner of the NFC East [Cowboys or Redskins] in round 1. I think they can take either one of them. And, I’d say GB or SF will take whoever comes in at the 6 spot [it'd be interesting if the Giants found a way in as a wildcard]. If the Giants get in at the 6, it’s possible they could be our 1st round matchup.
With all of that said, I think Mike Nolan’s defenses have proven to be great against your protypical pocket passers. But, Cam Newton’s had field days against us twice now. It’s definitely more challenging when you have a mobile QB. So much attention is directed his way, and then you have the threat of a guy like Marshawn Lynch as well.
Seattle would be a tough draw in the opening round. But, I like our chances. It’d be a tough game, without a doubt. Their defense has the make-up to give us problems. But, if we put together a gameplan that gets the ball out of Ryan’s hands quick with a lot of screen passes implemented into the gameplan, I think we can find ways to get the ball down the field.

Coop — I hear ya. That’s exactly what I want as well. But I’m a little worried our guys will come out flat on Saturday night after the huge win over the Giants. I surely hope that’s not what I see, but as we all know, Smitty isn’t the most consistent in blowing teams out that we should dominate. I would say that we should go out and dominate the Lions, get home field advantage, and maybe just play the key / core guys a half against the Bucs. I know there’s different philosophies regarding that, but you just never know in an NFL game vs. a rival. But then there’s the concern of not keeping the momentum going.

Agree with your premise D3.
But, it’s not really the fact that he’s a rookie, it’s more of his athleticism that worries me. But, we’ll see. I’m confident, regardless of who we draw, but we’re more suited to stop a prototypical pocket passer.
How we play this Saturday will be somewhat telling about where this team is headed. Do they gain steam and continue to play in another gear? If so, the league will recognize. Or do they go back down a gear and play the Lions the way we’ve been playing everybody else this season? I think how they play this week will show a lot about the focus that this team has. They have a great opportunity to really bottle up that confidence and carry it through into the postseason.
They ‘caught another gear’ this past weekend. Now, keep it there.

Nolan out after one season if he gets a ring? I would think that with just one season in a new town under his belt, he’d see if he could get a second ring before going elsewhere.
Anyhow, Seahawks/49ers will be the game to watch for Falcons fans this weekend. That is, if it doesn’t turn into a grinding, defensive slugfest a la Alabama/LSU in 2011. For the 1st time this season the Falcons finally put together a compete gm where the OFF and DEF played 4quarters of solid football. On top of that, they did it against the reigning SB champs, who the so called experts were predicting would use this gm to start another SB run like they did last yr.
However, rather than look at this gm as the possible start of a SB run for the Falcons, they decided to say the cause of the blowout was poor play by the Giants, rather than a dominating performance by the Falcons. The Falcon players, coaches, and fans now know just how good this team can be when both OFF and DEF are clicking.
Even with the dominant performance against the Giants, changes have to be made to our OL, because we need to develop far more consistency with our run and pass blocking. Our current OL has shown it’s capable of protecting MRyan, just not on a consistent basis.

Here is the article (ESPN INSIDER) on why Matt Ryan should win the MVP award:
Over the past few years, the Associated Press MVP award process has been a lot like the Heisman Trophy. The field of contenders is generally very deep early on, but by the time the season is winding down it becomes quite clear who is going to win the honor.
This year is not following that pattern, as the field of qualified MVP candidates has not seen as much thinning as in past years. At this point there are at least three players (Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson) who look as if they have a very strong shot at being named the victor in this contest. As worthy as that trio of elite candidates is, there is one other player whose candidacy should be deemed as just as strong, if not stronger, than those three.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is having the type of exceptional campaign that would place him at the pinnacle of MVP consideration in most seasons, yet certain elements seem to working against him in garnering that goal.
Before detailing those elements, it is helpful to realize just how dominant Ryan has been this year.
He certainly holds up in the standard passing categories, as Ryan ranks second in the league in completion percentage (68.5) and fifth in passing yards (4,202), yards per attempt (7.8) and touchdown passes (27).
As impressive as those totals are, an even more remarkable achievement is Ryan’s No. 1 rank in the Pass EPA category of ESPN’s Total QBR metric.
Pass EPA gauges the number of clutch-weighted expected points a quarterback adds on plays with pass attempts, so a case can be made that no other QB has been as valuable on aerials as Ryan has been this year.
Ryan also shares some valuable Total QBR real estate with Brady in that they are the only two quarterbacks this season to post a Total QBR mark of 95 or higher in three games.
Those figures should establish Ryan as one of the front-runners for this award and his candidacy starts to look even stronger when putting those aforementioned elements into perspective.
These include:
“Clutch performance”
This is an area where Brady typically excels, something that is evidenced by his effort in driving the Patriots to nearly come back from a 28-point deficit against the San Francisco 49ers this past week.
That type of high-profile exhibit justly earns plenty of MVP attention, but no quarterback has been better at leading his team to late game victories this year than Ryan.
According to pro-football-reference.com, Ryan’s six game-winning drives tie him with Andrew Luck for the league lead in that category (game-winning drives being defined as an offensive scoring drive in the fourth quarter or overtime that puts the winning team ahead for the last time).
“History should not matter”
One of the reasons clutch performance means so much in Ryan’s case is that his history of postseason letdowns is a huge roadblock to his achieving the status of an upper-tier MVP candidate.
This should not be the case and a past MVP voting process affords us a perfect example of how this type of thing should be handled.
When Peyton Manning won this award following the 2003 season, he still had a long history of coming up short in big games.
Manning was 0-3 in the NFL playoffs (his playoff games that year came after the MVP votes were tallied), 0-1 in collegiate national championship games, 1-0 in SEC title games and 0-4 against his college team’s most important rival at that time (the Florida Gators).
Add those records up and Manning was 1-8 in what could arguably be called the biggest games of his football career up to that point. This abysmal won-loss mark could have kept voters from casting their ballots for him, but they did the right thing and overlooked his history on the way to granting Manning a share of that MVP honor.
“Don’t give extra credit for injuries”
Manning and Peterson have both shown tremendous grit in overcoming injuries. As much credit as one might be tempted to give those two for this particular achievement, the MVP award is not the correct forum through which to do that. To do so would be to penalize Brady, Ryan and any of the other potential MVP candidates for not having overcome injuries.
The proper place to reward those injury-specific circumstances is via the Comeback Player of the Year Award, an honor which Manning and Peterson should both share at season’s end.
Excellence over a full season should get more credit than excellence over a shorter period of time
As great of a season as Peterson has had this year, the truth of the matter is that it really has been a tale of two seasons.
Peterson’s first six weeks looked like this:
Week 1 vs. Jacksonville: 17 carries, 84 yards, two touchdowns
Week 2 at Indianapolis: 16 carries, 60 yards, zero touchdowns
Week 3 vs. San Francisco: 25 carries, 86 yards, zero touchdowns
Week 4 at Detroit: 21 carries, 102 yards, zero touchdowns
Week 5 at Tennessee: 17 carries, 88 yards, zero touchdowns
Week 6 at Washington: 17 carries, 79 yards, zero touchdowns
Tally those numbers up and it equals 113 carries for 499 yards and two touchdowns in six games. Add those to the 20 receptions for 139 yards Peterson posted in that time frame and it reveals a set of statistics that are a step or two below what one expects from an MVP award winner.
Peterson is rightfully getting ample credit for the incredible roll he has been on in his proverbial second season, but for six weeks he was a very good, but not great back. That fact should not be simply forgotten in the excitement to honor Peterson’s achievements from late October through the end of the season.
“Having the best record in the NFL should count for something”
If all other things are roughly equal, one can justifiably say that the MVP award should go to the best player on the best team in the league.
Each of these MVP contenders has a strong statistical case and plays on a team with a winning record, so they are in that sense roughly equal. Since Ryan is the only one of this group who can make the claim for being on a team that is tied for the best record in the NFL, that tiebreaker should give him the inside track for this award.

It’s hard to argue with results, especially one that racks up close to 150 yards rushing, but I still believe that our offense has more potency and potential with Snelling, Rodgers, and A-Smith. Again, I really have no ground or basis to go on more than just what I’ve seen the last year and half regarding Turner. Someone earlier talked about the holes being really good and perhaps that Rodgers could have gained more yardage. It’s hard to say just that, because Turner did pretty well overall.
Turner – 16 carries, 52 yards, long 14
Rodgers – 11 carries, 25 yards, long 6
Snelling – 6 carries, 39 yards
The proof is in the pudding that Turner did a better job than Rodgers vs. the Giants, and that’s cold, hard stats. As I said, I really have no basis for it, but I still think that if we swapped Turner with Snelling or swapped the carries more like Rodgers getting 50% of the carries, Snelling getting 30-35%, and Turner switching roles with Snelling (being a kind of cleanup pile driver) at the end of the game.
The reasons have been discussed ad infinitum throughout the year, but Rodgers and Snelling just give more versatility to the offense in terms of being able to catch and run out of the backfield. I don’t really see that happening this year, but I really think it would make our offense even harder to stop. A few more items:
+ -If nothing else, hopefully, Snelling earned some more touches outright. He’s been the overlooked RB this year, and I think (as many have said) that Snelling runs harder than Turner, on a more consistent basis. In other words, comparatively, Snelling runs harder per touch than Turner more regularly. Turner will give you a good run, burst, or even a whole game every once in a while, but he’ll just as readily give you a clunker as well. I know it’s tough doling out a certain number of carries evenly, especially when there’s so few, but if nothing else, they could go with the hot hand. Who ever’s showing up and running the best, keeps getting the carries. That seems like common sense, but I’ve seen many times them take Quizz out when he’s running good, just to get Turner the ball.
+ -What is the deal with Antone Smith? More specifically, what is the deal with the COACHING STAFF regarding Antone Smith? Sunday makes two games in a row where they have tried putting him in the game and actually tried to get him the ball, only to have a bad throw by Matt Ryan setting up a screen (Panthers game) and give him the ball on a run that was called back due to the holding call (Giants game). And of course he’s never seen again. Either put the kid in and give him a shot, or don’t, but stop teasing him and us fans that we’ll actually get a chance to see his speed.
+ -I know that it’s easy to say that “Turner is Back” and he’s been running well lately, so he should continue to get the majority of snaps, but I’ll just say this. Despite having a great pass-rushing front on the Giants defense, they are particularly weak with their linebackers in stopping the run. Blackburn, Boley, Paysinger? So Turner is able to get some steam up when he runs. However, if we run into a stout run D front four and good set of LB’s (such as Seahawks and Niners), I can guarantee you that Turner will go back to some of his clunker performances.

What I don’t want to see……….
In follow up to what I was saying yesterday:
I don’t want to see us go back to some of the offensive clunkers we’ve witnessed against inferior teams vs. Detroit or Tampa Bay. Yes, they are both talented, but most NFL teams have some talent somewhere. Much like the Panthers, if we allow either of these teams to get confidence early, they will use that to their advantage about being able to “play for something” since they’re both out of the playoff picture. They can try to use beating us (one of the best two teams in the NFL in terms of record) as some sort of mythical springboard into next season. As ridiculous as that sounds, it beats the hell out of going out there to just earn a paycheck and get the season over with, particularly Tampa Bay. Detroit is a little different since they’re likely at a sort of crossroads with Jim Schwartz. Even though he led them to the playoffs last year, they’re wasn’t any sort of graceful landing, but rather a meteoric crash back to terrible.
The Bucs are obviously a different story. We’re not dealing with a Raheem Morris type of team, but rather a young and talented team that showed immense promise with a young head coach, only to fade late in the year. They are admittedly rebuilding towards the future and they would love nothing more than to catch us in the jaw right as we’re heading into the postseason.
Above all, I don’t want to see us come out sluggish and in a coma out of the gates. Will we look as fantastic as we did vs. the Giants? Hope so, but maybe not. However, I do not want to see us as pathetic as we’ve looked at times against some of the weaker teams like earlier this year (Panthers #2, Saints #2, Cardinals, Raiders, etc). I want to see energy, distribution, and most importantly creativity. I can’t stomach thinking that the awesomeness we witnessed vs. the Giants was a one-time blip and not the makings of something much more, especially getting ready for the playoffs.

From PatY at ESPN:
According to ESPN Stats & Information, Ryan has completed 50 of 57 attempts on screens. His completion and attempt numbers are second in the league behind Buffalo’s Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has completed 64 of 74 screens.
Ryan’s 374 yards on screens rank No. 5 in the league. But the most important stat is that Ryan leads the league in touchdown passes on screens with five.
I would say our offense was stymied with MM, and it suffers when MT is in. I expect to see the offense Saturday to revert back to “normal” as D3 was worried about.

Wings — Man, I hope not.
Arno — Man, I hope so.
Not sure if this has been brought up at all, but did anyone see Big Daddy Lamar Holmes debut in the game on Sunday? I didn’t get to see it, but Dave Archer was raving about Holmes coming into the game and plowing a clear path straight ahead. Would love to see the big dawg make some more appearances, hopefully in blowouts the next two weeks. To be frank, I’d much rather see Holmes in as our extra TE instead of Mike Johnson.
Also, something to play around with the next few weeks: punt returner. There’s no excuse not to at least TRY SOMEONE DIFFERENT! We have Antone Smith and Tim Toone that could give it a shot the next two weeks. If they fall flat on their face, than so be it, go back to good ol’ Fair-Catch Franks. But I remember many times seeing holes open that someone with speed could add even more of an element to our team, helping our offense get that much closer to the endzone.

Some players admitted to becoming too relaxed in their preparation for the Panthers game, which followed a tough victory against the rival Saints. After the humbling 30-20 defeat at Carolina, the Falcons responded with what they said was a focused week of practice before their 34-0 victory against the Giants on Sunday.
That ain’t all. And in the end, it’s on the HC.

D3, completely agree with trying different returners, but since Franks has been the guy for so long, come playoff time the only thing I want the PR to do is catch the football and don’t lose yardage. As unimpressive as Franks’ returns have been, it seems as if he is doing exactly what the coaches are telling him, catch the ball and don’t lose yards. Franks is very stiff, protective of the ball, and always going north and south. He literally plays like if he loses a single yard they will bench him.
The insanity continues in the national press on our team. Some outlets barely gave highlights of the game and moved on to another NFC East team. The excuses for the Giants’ losing have been trickling in all week and are now bordering on heartbreaking. There is very little to zero credit going to the Falcons for slapping the Super Bowl champs into astonishment. One of their D linemen said after the game that they “couldn’t believe what happened” and had no answer for their utter failure following putting a 50 spot on New Orleans. Even their coach said they had a great week of practice and didn’t know what happened. I’ll tell you what happened, we happened.

Couple notes on the Lions:
1. Weak rushing game. That plays in Mike Nolan’s hands. I expect to see some INTs, exotic blitzes, and a scheme to lock down Calvin Johnson.
2. Balanced overall defense. Another test for the Falcon’s offensive line on establishing the run and pass protecting. I’m very interested in the schemes the OC is drawing up to counter Suh.
3. Short week. Who will benefits? Who will be focused?
4. Penalties. One of the most undisciplined teams(Lions) versus the most(Falcons). How will that play out on the field?
Time will tell, but it should be a decent game Saturday night.

Looking like the same ole fatty Turner up the middle. I don’t understand why they keep using him. He got most of his yards after contact due to the Giants poor tackling. Great defenses will eat our run game up if he continues to play.

I’m not one to wish injury on players…but, if Turner tweeks his hammy just enough to miss one of the remaining games, the coaching staff has know choice but move Antoine up the depth chart, probably the only way we see Antoine in anything that resembles getting some burn in our RB rotation.
Thing about Turner getting a hamstring pull is unlikely…he’s built like my Aunt Bessie, big rear end…and hugh thighs. Tuner and Aunt Bessie’s Hamstrings are buried so deep in their thighs… making it next to impossible to pull one. We can always holdout hope, he misses the Team Charter.

With ya Phil on smith, the screen that Ryan missed him by 5 yards was on him, our MVP QB, who has the most accurate screen % in the NFL misses a receiver by 5 yards on a dump off? Ryan threw to a spot, Smith was not near it, could have been a diseaster. I hope he gets some garbage time the next few weeks just to see what he can do,, but we have come too far to pin our hopes on an unproven 4th stringer in the playoffs. Biggest concern(s) for Sat;
1) Suh knowing he is out of the playoffs and that we are in the playoff cheapshots one of our starters ended their season. And if it Ryan, then our year is over
2) Roddy White running his mouth and getting into it with the Lions D leading back to choice #1 above
3) Willie Mo is back in the line up, and goes out trying to prove he is the sheriff in town and injures himself again and making him less than probable for the play offs.
4) We blow out the Lions so badly that Smitty pulls Ryan beginning of the 3rd qrtr, throwing my FFL championship win this weekend out the window.

Seems the key to stopping the Seahawks is to stop Lynch, dude has been averaging 10 yards a carry. But lets face it, they put up big number against teams the pretty much quit. I think we could put together a game plan to stop Lynch, and make Russell beat us from the pocket. Although they have put up 50 points, Russel has barely put up 200 yards in the air. I am just glad he is putting up good film so we know what he can do.

From Don Banks on the SI Power Rankings:
“No disrespect intended, but I think even Falcons fans know their team
isn’t quite that good, and the Giants aren’t quite that bad.”
You know–you’re right? Really, I mean it…you COMPLETELY IGNORED the fact that the Falcons KNEELED DOWN at the end of the game in the red zone…we’re actually BETTER than that, somewhere in the range of 40-0, I would guess, if YOU BOTHERED TO LOOK AT THE FACTS, like I don’t know, what’s a good fact here, the FINAL SCORE????
Wow, Banks, you and the rest of the naysayers are in utter and complete denial….
I think I got it figured out though. After hearing various rants all over the sporting news, like Steven Smith saying the Falcons can “only ball in the regular season”, I get it…the Falcons just “don’t know their place” for these guys…how DARE they be a good or great team? They’re supposed to be all whipped and bow down to the NYs and SFs of the league. The message is clear from the sportswriters: Know your place.
First, we started winning in the regular season, a lot. They had to swallow that bitter pill and accept the fact that Atlanta wasn’t going to bow down anymore. They always had the Playoff caveat to spew. It’s their LAST line of defense, however, so they’re defending it with everything they’ve got. And when Atlanta sends a message to THE WORLD, like they did against the defending champs, they hold on desperately, cause their grip is slipping, and they’re about to fall off of that cliff. The Falcons are HERE, and they’re for REAL.
Know our place, my a$$.

The lesson learned from watching Atlanta’s defense is that each play is its own unique entity — trying to pick out tendencies from Nolan’s fronts and personnel groupings is borderline fruitless.

I understand D3’s revulsion at media disdain and his decision to tune it out. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment, but I sort of enjoy watching those guys have to position themselves to bestow faint praise upon us– I see what anguish it causes them. A writer from Pro Football Weekly for example:
“That punch never really knocked the New Yorkers cold. Oddly, the Giants stood there and took it. Like that silly scene in Hooper, where Burt Reynolds hauls back and clocks Terry Bradshaw on the chin, and Bradshaw just stares back and smiles and spits out a tooth.” Ha ha– the writer is in agony! Wow, I’m just really hard pressed to talk about anything regarding the Falcons in as long as I can remember. The Birds played about as good as I could ever ask. Hardly any complaints from me as we roll towards Saturday night. The main thing I wanted to discuss was the running game and I covered that yesterday. I’m literally at a loss for words when it come to our Falcons, and that’s saying something. So since I’ve nothing really to complain about, I’ll throw this one out there for consumption:
Assuming we win on Saturday and lock up home-field advantage, do we play all our starters and keep that momentum going, play them for a quarter, a half, or sit them altogether?
This is a really tough one. On the one hand, you want to get everyone healthy and ready for the big playoff push. In addition, you don’t want to risk any key guys like Ryan, Abe, Asante, Julio, Roddy, etc getting injured in a meaningless game. Talk about getting questioned and second-guessed to death.
On the other hand, as we’ve seen the last few years with the Giants last year, the Packers in 2010, the Cardinals in 2008 (even though they didn’t win), Giants in 2007,
D3

…..Steelers in 2005, so on and so on. Really, the only teams to have a first round bye and end up winning the Super Bowl in recent history is the Steelers in 2008 and the sAINTS in 2009. That doesn’t necessarily mean much, but it does suggest that the teams that are playing the best football MOST RECENTLY are the ones that do the best in the playoffs. On the flip side, there are a ton of examples of teams that have had byes only to get punched out early in the playoffs, the 15-1 Packers from last year and of course us from 2010. It really is a tough call. D@mned if you do, and d@mned if you don’t.
I will say this, though. Smitty better have learned something from his playoff losses, especially from 2010 when we had home-field. I remember reading about their practices and how it seemed that they were completely in shorts and t-shirts the whole time. Maybe that’s normal and perhaps it;s a little old-school, especially since I have no concept about what kind of beating these guys take for 6 months. But I would err on the side of making sure my team was physical and ready to go. I know it’s a fine line between going too hard and risking injury and staying competitive, but I think you gotta do something. Maybe a full 11-on-11 or something like that, offense vs. defense. I just know that if you bake cakes and design birthday cards the way we seemed to be doing in 2010, than you’re setting up for an @-whipping, playing a team that just got through playing for their playoff lives.

Never saw the media qualifying the Giants victory with caveats to downplay the margin of victory….but I think our downfall in the media is when Peter King picked us to win the SB and we laid a playoff egg. When you make PK look bad, he’s gonna return the favor….I just can’t wait to see him about face and say he knew it all along, but was a year early when we win the SB this year.
Last word on A Smith, he has less than 500 carries in college, Smitty’s biggest issue is his experience, so my guess is prone to fumble in practice, but he is on the team due to his special teams play, he is a “great blocker, and a great cover guy” in Smitty’s words, on a special team unit that is among the best in the NFL. That is how he earns his keep….But I am intrigued by the guy, he averaged between 5-10 YPC in college, hope we take care of biz Saturday night and let him loose on week 17.

D3 (11:40) – Personally I would play my starters at least half of the game to keep the momentum of the team going. I’m throwing out ALL of the past playoff losses for the fact that we had a team that was inexperienced and led by Dumb and Dumber on offense and defense.
Additionally, I believe this team has infused itself with players that have SB rings on purpose to help our guys develop a winner’s mindset/attitude. The new coordinators are the difference this year and we won’t be as predictable on both sides of the ball as we have been in the past. That’s why I’m discounting the past playoff failures. I’m must more confident in the 2012 Falcons and we will win more than just A playoff game–like that’s even the team’s goal.

MB — Good point regarding A-Smith. I think that may be it or it may just be a simple numbers game. Not only have we cut our total running carries way down, we’ve also gone to more running backs involved other than 70-80% just Turner. It may be just that there’s only so many carries to go around. It’s just very odd that they put him in for 1 play, only to never see him again. Don’t really get that at all. Especially when we were blowing out the Giants. Even though I do want to see A-Smith, I hope that at least Snelling earned himself some more touches with his hard running.
Arno — I read that the other day. That was one of the most bizarro articles I’ve ever read. I couldn’t understand whether he was trying to give the Falcons back-handed compliments, criticism, or what. Just didn’t get it at all.
Chop — Agreed. That sounds about right in terms of playing the starters. I surely hope so regarding the coordinators. I know for a fact that Nolan is light years better and he’s shown it more consistently. I also know that Koetter is way better than Malarkey as well, but he’s shown some inconsistency as well.

Right from the start, I wanted this team to win the SB this year because I believed they put all the right pieces in place to do it. Adding fuel to that fire is the fact that the Taints won a SB XLIV(*). The third thing that ratcheted up my hope for this year is the fact that SB XLVII will be played at the Home of Taint. Little could be sweeter than taking home the whole hoop of cheese from the house of your most-hated rival.
Except this: I’m tired of reading the garbage from these so-called sports writers. The sweetest thing of all will be reading the tripe these hacks have to publish if the Falcons take 47. After the mealy-mouthing and total lack of respect over the course of this ENTIRE season, it will be therapeutic to read their responses. Not that I think their writing will be profound, or that the message in their writing will be therapeutic in itself. No, my therapy will be in the knowledge that, regardless of WHAT they write, they will have to write it but a few lines at a time in those pauses between vomiting into their trash cans.
Now, that will be sweet!

Agree on not much to discuss angle. I hope the “change-up” philosophy sticks and wasn’t a one time deal. Not being prepared for the Panthers forces our hand a bit this week as we need to win if we do wanna rest/ protect/ experiment against the Sucs. as a guy from NJ, I’ve tried telling folks that liberalism – with its deluded reality, arrogance and self absorption – infects everything these guys do. I had a subscription to the Sporting News, it stopped printing a magazine midway through. the can’t admit ineptitude, and are animated by hubris. The Giants have gotten super lucky – cinderella team twice in a 5 year span. Also, most of the NE folks have a distinct, palpable bias against GA. Most like due to old TV footage, and the accent folks have at trailer parks after a tornado comes through. but, GA believe in personal responsbility and caveat emptor – you buy a bad thing, it is all on you. REquires citizens to have operating brains and some street smarts. And, it is a whole lot cheaper gov’t. NJ has a state budget of 33 billion – with LESS people than GA. GA has about an 18 billion budget, down from a high of 21 billion. Guess how much more expensive YOUR life would be if you were funding double the cost of state gov’t? AND, NJ is very small compared to GA.

I don’t care how much our starters play, I’d like Tony G to get over a 1000 yards – that is my last personal goal for this year! Here’s a little topic for discussion during a slow week. Pro Bowl candidates from our Falcons………
Here’s the numbers by positions:
QB – 3
WR – 5
TE – 2
T – 3
G – 3
C – 2
DE – 3
DT – 3
OLB – 4
ILB – 3
CB – 4
FS – 2
SS – 2
QB
Ryan’s a lock for Pro Bowl and maybe still a candidate for MVP, even though I think most are falling all over themselves to give it to Peyton Manning and / or Aaron Rodgers again.
My take on QBs from NFC:
1) Ryan
2) Rodgers
3) Crapshoot for #3, but I’ll go with RG3 due to his efficiency and rush yards; Brees too many picks and Romo to inconsistent
No sense in mentioning RB since we don’t have anyone close
WR – Here’s where it gets really interesting……
1) Calvin Johnson – 1,667 yards – 5 TDs
2) Brandon Marshall – 1,398 yards – 10 TDs
3) Vincent Jackson – 1,226 yards – 8 TDs
4) Roddy White – 1,156 yards – 5 TDs
5) Dez Bryant – 1,087 yards – 10 TDs
6) Julio Jones – 1,071 yards – 9 TDs
They only keep 5 and I think Johnson and Marshall are locks. It all depends on what they use as criteria: yards, TDs, or being on a winning team record wise. Of course at least one between Roddy and Julio will make it and, to be honest, both should make it in my opinion.
Do they go with Vincent Jackson on a 6-8 team? Do they go with Dez Bryant on an average Cowboys team? If I were to bet, I’d think they go with Julio over Roddy because of double the TDs, a little less in yardage, and more dynamic plays. It should be……..
1) Johnson
2) Marshall
3) Julio Jones
4) Dez Bryant
5) Roddy White
Sorry, even though Jackson’s stats are good, the team he plays for is not good (6-8). At least the others are above .500.
TE
Not even close, TG gets another one, deservedly so. He’s head and shoulders above he nearest TE. Witten has more yards, but only 2 TDs. Graham has more TDs, but less yards, and his team is terrible. My guess…..
1) Gonzo
2) Witten

D3, it would seem to me, when picking WR’s, one should consider who else is on the team. If JJ or RW were in CJ’s position, either one of them would have probably more yards than CJ. If a team has only one capable receiver, who would you guess the QB is going to throw the ball to?
I think RW and JJ should make it.

Article on Turner seems to make a case based on loyalty, and it has been my experience in life that loyalty is rewarded, so I lean that way with my heart, but it makes no case, or sense regarding production, so the NFL being the NFL, cut him, and when it is done playing, give him a job in the front office of some sort, especially if we get-er done this year. He has done much to help stabilize a franchise in a death spiral, even though he has not been a model citizen.

The Argument that JJ and RW84 take yards away is the ultimate catch 22, for the point is valid, but when you have two guys like that, it means they draw coverage off each other, so the Calvin Johnson types have to put up number in double/triple coverage all season long. Especially when you put TG up there….gonna be hard to get all 3 in the pro bowl, especially when you consider the love everyone in the national media has for the birds. Not that I don’t think they are all worthy.

Finally, I would be concerned about Snelling returning kickoffs in that he might kill someone, plus he runs in the 4.7-4.8 range, which is even slower than Qiuzz, and although Quizz does not have home run speed, he can find a crease and pop it out there to the 50 pretty quick…..Old article on Antone…I know I said I was done with Anton, but this is another topic…

Really, other than Spoon, I don’t see anyone on the D how is slam dunk….Just goes to show how good Nolan is…..It would be a sin to put this man in an HC position, he is an artist and is where he really belongs, and the world is a better place because of it.

Take it back, Abe might get in, got some competition though….he is 6th in sacks in the NFC, but he lead the NFC is forced fumbles….And Carolina has 2 guys with more sacks, it is like he Calvin Johnson argument, Abe faces more coverage.

Actually though, most of those in front of Abe in sacks are LBs, so….he is 3rd for DTs in sacks, with two coming from Carolina….so Abe probably get in, but now I am not so sure about Spoon, his does not have the sacks, and everyone loves the sack…..He missed a few games too….
Maybe nobody from our D makes the pro bowl….Amazing…but probably Abe….

“Draft some O-lineman !!!
Peter Konz was projected to go 1st round in almost every mock last year .. He falls to us in the 2nd and mini-millen picks another WR …. No way in hell Broyles was BPA .
Atlanta is 12-2 and has Konz starting at RG . Matt Ryan looks great and they have a running game . The difference between winning teams and losing ones , starts at the top !!” –SuhOwnsYourSoul

The AINTS/TAINTS/CAINTS thought their OL could do just as well by using a Probowl OG in place of an Allpro OG, and they were painfully wrong. The Falcons thought they could replace a less than Probowl caliber OG with an OT(GReynolds), and 2 OCs(Hawley/Konz).
Not once did we try using an actual OG(MJohnson/HValdez, AJackson)as an OG replacement, and our coaching staff is still wondering why our OL is so inconsistent. With LT SBaker being a FA after the season, will he be resigned

If we win this weekend, I’d hope they’d at least let the starters go for 2 to 3 quarters in the finale vs TB. I understand you don’t want to risk injury, but you also don’t want to have these guys sitting for 2 weeks. IMO, momentum trumps rest. If there are some guys that are nicked up, then yeah, you can sit them out. But, I wouldn’t just declare all the starters out vs. TB.
Saw DeCoud do an interview on NFL AM this morning. Dude’s one goofy guy. Pretty funny. But, they asked him who they thought was the biggest threat in the NFC. After thinking about it a bit, he said the Packers.
I can understand the logic behind it, but I’d say the Packers would probably be one of our more favorable matchups. Their front isn’t anywhere near as dominant as the Seahawks or Niners. And with Mike Nolan, I’m confident we can find ways to get to Rodgers and get him out of rhythm. Their O-Line has proven to be flawed. Rogers makes up for a lot of their deficiencies up front, but still, their offense isn’t clickin’ anywhere near the rate it was last season or their Superbowl season, and it’s not just because they’ve suffered injuries at the skill positions. I’d argue it’s moreso their lack of protection up front.

Holiday Greetings Cage Family! — The time is getting close both for our Birds hitting the playoffs and also the Holiday season. It’s hard to manufacture stuff to talk about when you have such a dominating performance like we did vs. the Giants, so I’ll go with a few topics here…….
Talking about the Pro Bowl a little yesterday and we know that Ryan, Gonzo, and at least one of our WRs are locks. The defense gets a little trickier, because like I said yesterday, who knows what criteria goes into it. I will say that the trend has been to reward the teams with the best records with many considerations when push comes to shove. That being said……….
Looking at the safeties, believe it or not, it appears that Thomas DeCoud is almost a lock to go. In terms of stats, here’s the list for the NFC
Stevie Brown – Giants – 69 tackles – 8 passes defensed – 7 INTs- 2 forced fumbles
Thomas DeCoud – 64 tackles – 1 sack – 8 passes defensed – 6 INTs – 0 forced fumbles
Kerry Rhodes – Cardinals – 54 tackles – 1 sack – 11 passes defensed – 4 INT – 2 FF
William Moore – 75 tackles – 1 sack – 8 passes defensed – 4 INTs – 2 FF
That’s right, and those numbers for Willy Mo are including him missing 2-3 games. The next two down the list really aren’t even close in terms of sacks, tackles, or INTs. Unless they intentionally go out of their way to not include both Falcons safeties, it looks like both DeCoud and Willy Mo will be nominated for the Pro Bowl. Rightly so. They’ve been the biggest turnaround for our defense, IMO.
In terms of pure defensive ends, not including OLB/DE hybrids in a 3-4, it also appears that Abe should be getting the nod for Pro Bowl as well. Only Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson have more sacks then him and in terms of being valuable to a team, there’s probably not as many as valuable as Abe is to our defense. Hard to imagine him not being picked to be honest.
Even though I think Spoon should get the nod because he’s the heart and soul of our D, I don’t think he will because he’s WAY down the list on things that matter to voters, like tackles and sacks. My assumption is that they care mostly about sacks and Spoon only has 3, to go along with 1 interception and around 80 tackles or so. I think he should go, but I think Aldon Smith, Clay Matthews, and Demarcus Ware will take that. They do take 5 I think, and I think one slot should be reserved for the more traditional OLB in a 4-3, rather than the OLB’s in a 3-4 that get all the gaudy numbers.
Asante Samuel? I think he’s made a huge difference this year, but in terms of interceptions and pure stats, it doesn’t look that way.
In terms of OL, the only two I could see making it would be Justin Blalock or Sam Baker (kind of ironic isn’t it?). I have no clue whatsoever what criteria they use to take OL. I would think they would go with either who is the most successful in terms of run-blocking, which would sure as the Hades not be any of ours.
Another criteria I would assume would be going with whoever the best passing team is, and that would be us. The only two that would even be considered would be Sam Baker or Justin Blalock. Honestly, I’d have to say that Baker probably deserves more than Blalock. By and large, Baker has done a pretty darn good job this year. Blalock has been the rock for awhile, but he’s had his own clunkers too up the middle.
Some inside the Falcons organization are lobbying McClure for Pro Bowl. Ummm NO! Yes, he’s the veteran and the guy who “leads” the line and held them all together, but he’s also one of the biggest weaknesses on the OL overall, right next to Clabo. Clabo’s probably been the weakest link, but McClure’s not far behind.

Very interseting to see the Falcons starting to incoperate Harry Douglas, Antoine Smith and fullback Cox into the offense…albeit, Antoine/Cox to a very mininmal degree. Could it be Smith/Koetter are beginning to show a bit of pre-playoff chess. Smith/Koetter, IMO, are beginning to expand the offensive arsenal to include H. Douglas, Antoine Smith and M. Cox, If my thought process (guessing) is close to accurate, they are putting players on film, for other teams to game-plan for, rather focus all resources (game plan) so excessively on our bread & butter, ie., JJ, Roddy, Gonzo…and to a lesser extent, Turner.
Any amount of time not focused on our core players, keeps them (opponents) guessing with certain personnel packages, IMO, bodes well for us. IMHO.

SOMEBODY — If they are in fact doing that and playing the pre-playoff chess you talked about, than I would be immensely impressed and also have to eat a ton of crow. Maybe they really have been “saving” some stuff for the playoffs. Maybe that was the lessons that Smitty talked about learning from the previous 3 playoff losses. I still have my doubts on that, but if that’s what they’re up to, than they are way more advanced than I thought. Perhaps that’s why we stormed out of the gate, got a sizeable lead in the NFC for home-field, and they started throttling some of their play calls and designs to be more vanilla, having the luxury of having a little lead in the NFC. Again, I still have my doubts, but it would be awesome to see that be the truth. Would really love to see us go with minimal Turner and Quizz get 50% of the carries, Snelling get 30% of the carries, and Antone get the other 20%. Quizz – 16 touches; Snelling 11 touches; A-Smith – 6 touches. I would LOVE to see that. We can use the excuse of “saving Turner for the playoffs!”

If the Falcons CS is playing possum with play calls, then we’re not supposed to know. I finally got to the point where I just don’t care. It’s useless speculation to me. All that matters is whether or not they are truly prepared and have what it takes to get us some postseason success.
It’s really not even worth the inevitable “I told you so” refrain that is going to happen whether we succeed or fail. Because either way, somebody will be able to say “I told you so” as if they’re saying it actually made it true, or validated it, or made it happen.
Anyway, here’s to the Mayans being wrong and the Lions (and Suh) getting their arses kicked.
I say put Lamar Holmes in the game if we get an early lead or and let Suh have a taste of that big boy. Holmes could uses some seasoning.

DeCoud has played very well – except for possibly 3 to 5 games ago where he disappeared, started body tackling and again taking bad routes. but, the last 3 games, he cleaned that up – making nice leg tackles and being productive. I meant to comment on this earlier – for anybody who remembers Bo Jackson, and was watching the Raider game where he injured his hip, they were saying right after he would be back in 2 weeks – which at the time, considering how oddly his hip/pelvis had buckled, I doubted. I relate this to RB3’s injury. That was one terrible knee movement. He may come back, but I would not be surprised if his mobility is hampered or he leaves the game after reinjuring that knee. RB3 needs to learn to avoid contact. The bigger defensive guys like to haul off and hammer guys like him. Especially if he had made them look bad earlier in the game. Cam can get away with it – he’s a mountain.

Thinking ahead to the playoffs, I am starting to think of match-ups and what teams we would fair better against.
Believe it or not, I feel that Greenbay would be great pull for us, just because they are horrible at running the ball and rely heavily in passing. ATL defense is first in the league in not allowing passing touchdowns and top three in interceptions.
Redskins have a mobile QB and a good running back, but I would rather them come out of the east for the rookie factor. Not to mention their defense is horrid.
I wouldn’t mind the Bears squeaking in either. Their offense is seriously bad… and their defense is old/on the decline.
Seahawks seem like a more likely pull, but we have advantages in that they have a rookie QB(Mike Nolan would have a field day). They have a dominant defense, and would help ATL better prepare for the 49ers. I am not too sure if they can play in ATL well, and I would be confident in the Falcons getting the W. They still haven’t proved they can beat the very good teams(refs helped them versus Greenbay, and Patriots gave them the game earlier in the year).
The only team that a worry about is the 49ers, which the Falcons will not see until the NFC championship. Now that team is the complete package. They can do the long plays, run the ball, play on the road, play hard hitting defense, great special teams and control the line of scrimmage.
It seems to me that the only way to beat them is to go no huddle right off the bat to negate the pass rush, since their secondary is extremely suspect. Turner should be used as pass protector ONLY. Mike Nolan will have something drawn up for Kap, but it’s always been an issue for our defense to stop the run. I feel Kap is more of a threat than Wilson due to his size/strength, though.
You have to beat the best to be the best, so it really doesn’t matter. If the Falcons can get the running game going, then they will be hard to stop in the playoffs.

If you think ATL is going to take this team lightly… you’re crazy.
They are going to whip the sh!t out of this team. Book it.
Also, all the Lions have is Calvin Johnson and Mike Nolan has done a great job at taking their(opposing QBs) best option all season.

Lions suck. The only thing they have going for them is their defensive line.
ATL would have to go into the game half-dead to lose to them.

Woot! Tonight will be almost as good as the Beef O’ Brady’s Bowl.
JJ beat me to the “Playbook” video but it is nice to see us finally get the clue on offense. Hope they can keep it up. I guess my contribution will have to be stat related then, this ( http://wp.advancednflstats.com/playerstats.php?pos=QB ) one goes out to the clueless portion of our fanbase that thinks M. Ryan isn’t anywhere close to Brady, Manning, etc. as a QB. That’s the number one spot there since I know some on the troll board can’t count that high
. If the super stat geeks and the playbook dudes are right, we should get an early Christmas present.

In an interview this morning, Coach M Smith said, “The key to winning tonight’s game is to establish the running game, and we are going to come out and do it”. He said something to the effect he liked those runs and short passes that resulted in a third and short.
That means he is happy with the three yard runs.

Two GAME DAYs in one week? Looks like Christmas came a bit early.
I expect the Birds to keep their momentum going and have a solid performance against a weak team. I do wonder whether Smitty will rest starters if we get a big enough lead, though with an extra day off due to the schedule, he may not need to.
No upsets today. Birds win it, and I can grab those last-minute Christmas gifts without being in a bad mood.

Wings,
From day one in the NFL, run the ball and stop the run. Last week we ran the ball and kept one of the best D-lines in football off our QB. We run the football it keeps the D from pinning their ears back. It also helps to get a lead, but, running the ball is important.

Smitty and his messing with things is the only thing that worries me about our team anymore. I have to give credit for finally switching to some Walsh style tactics last week tho, just hope he doesn’t get into trying to force the old ways again.
. I am just happy I didn’t have to go to the hospital with a large bird of prey embedded in my noggin.
In a more light hearted vein, I got a rather strong sign from the “other side”. I guess the bearded ones got lonely but suffice to say I think we win this one. I am not a shaman master however so the full depth of the totemic vision eludes me, could be a good sign for the post season tho

they weren’t really heating it up much in the 1st half either…
the lion’s moved it on us, only to turn it over.
that’s the only difference between then and now.
i think it’s possible Nolan’s just playing it vanilla down the stretch now.
we haven’t seen any adjustments.

We won and that’s the most important thing. I’m not happy with the way this team played tonight. The calls were too damn conservative in the zone all night long. Stop the LOVE FEST with Turner. “What I didn’t like: The way the Falcons insist on continuing to try to establish Michael Turner and the running game. Look, it just isn’t working. Either make Jacquizz Rodgers the feature back or just scrap the run totally and put everything in Ryan’s hands. The Falcons had a 21-6 halftime lead, but they were stubborn about Turner and the running game early in the second half and that gave the Lions a chance to get back into the game. ” – Pat Y
How is it that an imbecile like Pat Y can get it but Smitty can’t? Blows my mind, here is link ( http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/68827/rapid-reaction-falcons-31-lions-18 ).
