Falcons Earn Tough Win (Brian Blanco)
The naysayers will keep finding ways to doubt the Falcons and their close wins. As Terry Bradshaw said today, “the Falcons are winning, but they just aren’t dominating.” Strahan chimes in that if they play too many close games, they may eventually lose one, maybe in January.” The fact is that the Falcons beat a very good division opponent who’s been one of the hottest teams in the NFL on the road, while still not even coming close to playing their best football. Sure, it wasn’t pretty at times and downright ugly others, but overall the Falcons won another tough game on the road, improved to 10-1 (which is still tied for the best record in the NFL), and essentially own a 4 game division lead with 5 games to go. A short week lies ahead in yet another enormous game, this time to the rival Saints, who handed the Falcons their only loss. A look at the Falcons big win over the Bucs………..
Some still say the Falcons aren’t winning big enough or dominating, but the fact remains that they are winning and have done so 10 times out of 11. There are those that continue to believe the Falcons are a House of Cards and that’s somehow projecting to another playoff failure. However, you can’t have it both ways and sing the praises of a team that’s one of the hottest in the NFL and when a win is achieved, it somehow wasn’t pretty enough. This wasn’t the Cardinals, Panthers, or Raiders, it was a division opponent who’s been playing really good football lately. Of course it wasn’t always pretty, but the Falcons overcame two turnovers and plenty of missed opportunities to get it done yet again. This time it was against a tough team on the road.
Julio's Career Day (Brian Blanco)
Most believed that the trade for Asante Samuel would lead to a much needed infusion of attitude and swagger the Falcons have sorely missed. Well, that surely has had a good impact, but the former All-Pro cornerback turned in an effort worthy of heroic proportions. With the Falcons either clinging to a tiny lead or having to come back to win the game on the road, Samuel willed himself in the game while visibly being injured. Several times it was possible to think that he may have separated his shoulder and be out for the year. He gutted it out through pain and suffering knowing how important the game was and epitomized heart and effort. He dropped a few potential interceptions, but seeing the amount of pain he was in, it became completely understandable. If anyone wondered about Samuel’s ability to back up his boisterous personality on the field, all those questions were answered with authority and then some with his gutty performance.
The belief among many was that rookie running back phenom Doug Martin would run laps over and around the Falcons porous run defense. It’s been a struggle pretty much all year and Martin has been tearing up the league the last few weeks. The Falcons defense bowed their necks and found a way to corral and stop the streaking running back. Martin did score two touchdowns, but the Birds held the former Boise State RB at 50 yards on 21 carries. Only the Washington Redskins held Martin to fewer yards (33) and that was only on 8 carries. Twice the defense kept the Falcons in the game after two costly turnovers and played a huge role overall in the game. They may not be a dominant defense just yet, but they are getting it done when they need to, especially regarding points and keeping hot players in check.
Time to Give Quizz the Rock (Reinhold Matay)
No point in beating a dead horse, but it’s impossible to ignore the elephant in the room. What will it take for Coach Smith and OC Koetter to give Jacquizz Rodgers the start and the vast majority of carries over Michael Turner. Smith and Koetter are “gradually” giving Rodgers more looks and he’s not disappointing. He had 49 yards on 10 carries and chipped in another 2 catches for 30 yards. And that’s not even including the huge return that Rodgers had to set up the game winning drive. This is not to say that Turner doesn’t have a place on the team, but as Cage Member Paddy O suggested, perhaps the Falcons should look to use Turner in more goal-line situations the way the Steelers did with Jerome Bettis towards the end of his career.
Maybe it’s unfair to just compare the numbers, but Turner averaged a meager 1.3 yards, gaining 17 yards on 13 carries, and that’s including a long run of 9 yards. Again, it might not be his fault as much as poor run play-calling, but it’s time to hand over the keys to Jacquizz Rodgers as the Falcons primary back. It doesn’t mean that Turner shouldn’t see the field anymore, but the evidence has also become insurmountable. Remember that it was Coach Smith himself who proclaimed that Rodgers was not exclusively a 3rd down back long ago in preseason.
The Falcons only came away with 2 total sacks (one by Biermann and the other by D.Robinson), but they pressured Josh Freeman very well on Sunday. They didn’t seem to get to him too much early on, but the they surely did as the game wore on. Many times it was seen that Freeman was getting hit as he released the ball and having to pick himself up after the play. In fact, at least one of the would-be picks came after Freeman was getting hit while throwing the ball. John Abraham was getting his usual pressure and Jonathan Babineaux seemed to almost exclusively play defensive end much of the time. Young guns Cliff Matthews and Travian Robertson were both seen getting decent pressure as well, a welcome sign. It was also good to see Corey Peters come back in the game after leaving with an injury. Some of the blitzes seem to get picked up a little too easily, but that’s just going to happen sometimes. The blitz and sack by Dunta Robinson was a thing of beauty.
Pass Rush Better (Reinhold Matay)
As mentioned earlier, the Falcons defense still won’t be confused with being dominant. However, they are making some big stands lately to keep the the team in the game, many times after offensive mistakes. The Cardinals game saw the defense save an offense in major meltdown mode and they made some enormous stops against the Bucs that could have easily led to a much more difficult game. And remember that this is only Mike Nolan’s first year at the helm and while there’s surely a ways to go, this defensive is showing excellent progress. They held the Bucs to 3 points after Matt Ryan threw an interception. When Ryan was pummeled by a Bucs defender and fumbled the ball away, the defense again held them to a field goal. They also held the Bucs to a 56 yard field goal attempt, which they missed. If the Bucs cash in a touchdown many of those times, this may be reporting a second loss.
Dunta Robinson has been one of the fans and critics favorite lightning rods since he signed the eye-popping contract as a free agent cornerback back in 2010. Many called him a free agent bust and a major overreach in a weak free agency class to simply fill a gap. While Robinson hasn’t been an All-Pro cornerback, he has looked much better this year and had a very tough and gritty game against the Bucs. He’s one of the few defensive players that will deliver a huge hit that many of the best defenses possess. Robinson had a bone-crunching hit on Doug Martin, popped up, and seemingly might be done for the day. He went and got check out and returned soon afterwards and help lead the defense to a big win.
What has happened to the Falcons safeties that looked like world-beaters the first few weeks? It was a good talking point throughout the off-season on which player or what position would benefit the most from Mike Nolan’s new scheme. While the safety position wasn’t the highest on many fans lists, some thought that it could see a major improvement. Some thought William Moore might elevate his game to a Pro Bowl level and Thomas DeCoud could get back some of the early magic he flashed in 2009. Early on, it looked as though those premonitions may come true. DeCoud and Moore were all over the field, making interceptions, knocking down passes, and delivering big hits.
Smith Looks Serious (Brian Blanco)
Recently, however, they have both looked less than stellar. Moore hasn’t necessarily done poorly, but he’s not having the same impact he was in the beginning. DeCoud, on the other hand, has looked pedestrian at times. He’s often seen getting caught out of position, using shoulder bumps on players instead of giving big hits, and sometimes looking downright awful in coverage. It’s surely not all their fault as many other positions have had their own issues and that’s likely having a negative impact on them. Some of it may have to do with the front 7 having problems against the run and thus inching closer for run support. Whatever the reason, it would be very nice to see the safety tandem get back to their early season form.
Thankfully the Falcons have found Robert McClain to step up and in an otherwise huge gap left by a slew of injuries to the Falcons cornerbacks. Brent Grimes was lost for the year in game 1 vs. the Chiefs and Asante Samuel has been banged up the last few weeks. Dunta Robinson left for a spell on Sunday, but returned later. There’s a sense of concern on the depth chart after McClain as Christopher Owens and Dominique Franks are next on the list and are surely not the model of consistency. While McClain has been the best surprise of the season, this is a position that will have to have some infusion of talent, whether through the draft or in free agency. They don’t necessarily need starting quality, but definitely need some better depth.
The Falcons had plenty of chances to put some distance between themselves and the Bucs on Sunday. The Birds of course got the ball first as they always do and had a nice opening drive bog down yet again for a field goal. Of course there was the botching of the red zone opportunity to end the 1st half when Julio Jones caught a pass on the 4 yard line, where Coach Smith seemed more concerned with eating up the clock than scoring a touchdown. Matt Bryant misses a chip-shot field goal to get the lead at halftime. After the break, the defense holds the Bucs to a field goal and the Falcons promptly score a touchdown with an 80 yard strike to Jones. The defense gets a three and out to give the offense the ball back and big chance to gain some separation. What does the offense do? Only go three and out themselves with a rather pitiful play selection. Even though you can’t fault the defense very much, they did have the Bucs backed up to their goal-line at 1st and 21, only to let them drive all the way down for a touchdown. At the end Matt Bryant essentially misses a game-ending field goal. It’s a little nitpicking because they ultimately won the game, but the Falcons have to learn to stop squandering so many opportunities to gain some separation when they have the chance.
Will they Ever Fully Click? (Brian Blanco)
Fans keep talking about how awesome this team will be if everything clicks for one game and how they could be unstoppable. If the offense hits on all cylinders, the defense continues it’s excellent progression, special teams is on point, and coaching doesn’t bog down in too much conservatism, it could be a beautiful sight. The Falcons have obviously done some good and great things throughout the season, but rarely have all the phases been hitting at once. It seems each week that one of the phases takes their time off (defense earlier in the season, offense more recently). The Birds know better than anyone how important it is to be hitting the right gear at the right time and there’s still plenty of time, but the window is drawing more narrow as the season hits the final push to the playoffs. If this team can all click in at once, the ultimate goal could truly be in sight.
1) Simple Bomb – what’s your thoughts on the Falcons road win vs. the Bucs: huge win on the road vs. a streaking team or still making it too hard on themselves?
2) How about Asante Samuel’s gutsy performance. Could it be a rallying point of sorts?
3) Was the stout run defense a blip or sign of good things to come?
4) Will Smith and Koetter ever turn over the keys to Jacquizz Rodgers as the feature back?
5) Is the running back position the main thing holding this offense back from being great?
6) Was the pass rush better overall or more having to do with Josh Freeman’s errors?
7) What’s your thoughts on the defense overall this season, particularly of late?
8.) Is the Falcons defense having to keep the team in the game too much?
9) Has Dunta Robinson improved enough for your liking?
10) What’s going on with the Falcons safeties lately?
11) Time to panic on CB depth just yet?
12) Can the Falcons stop blowing opportunities to get separation on their opponents?
13) Will the Birds ever click into gear all at the same time?

The clip is a little long. But Fredrick (#72) is the man in the middle. You be the judge. He can play the center or guard. I think he will be there in the second or third for us to take in the upcoming draft. Will have to watch his combine efforts.
But you know what you are getting with Wisconsin linemen.

“You’re right about the maturity factor and what not. That, and some veteran leadership. Sean Weatherspoon has taken this defense to a different level under Mike Nolan, and nothing was more gutsy than the play of Dunta Robinson against Tampa, along with Asante Samuel…especially his final play in the endzone. Wow….” -Big Ray
Exactly. I think Sean W. is the heart of that defense. I am amazed how Nolan was able to keep the defense respectable while he was gone. But, Spoon is back, and he has a game under his belt to get full speed ready. I expect a monster game from him, and less running yards for the Saints. I think Brees is going to get a whole new monster Thursday night.
Also, have you seen the SFX from the Tampa-Falcons game? Here’s the link:

Chop, I concur with your assessment. I am on record as saying that Smitty has no clue when it comes to offensive football. Konz should have been a center from day one. Yes he is versatile but dude is a stud and he was the BEST center in the draft. Everyone knew that.
Blalock (330), Konz (315), Frederick (335). Now if you want to roll with that, that is the epitome of power. Frederick is a stone wall. The video shows that cuz does not get trucked.
Again, Wisconsin linemen are well trained and fundamentally solid.

If you think Spoon is a beast now, just imagine him in a 3-4 scheme under Nolan. Trust me when I tell you. We have STILL yet to see the FULL package from Sean Weatherspoon.
I watched this kid closely at Mizzou. I brought the Spoon Express into the cage. This dude has the potential and upside, if he can stay away from the little injuries, to be one of the all time greats.

Big Ray,
You talked about the need to strengthen the DL. Well, I have no issue with that but I, deeply desiring a 3-4, will shift my pass rush from the line to the outside linebackers. And there also, I have a target on the board.
Stanford’s Chase Thomas. He can play outside linebacker with the best of them. He can be effective in the 4-3 as a strongside LB but I love what he could bring as a pass-rush OLB specialist in a 3-4.
He is 6′4, 245, and has a frame that could allow for a little more bulk while not altering speed.

SW — Great to see you back brother! As always, love your early draft predictions and Cocoa Mel analysis. Haven’t checked him out yet, but based on your experience, you know I trust you. Will check out one Stephan Taylor during the bowl season. I’ve had some guys that I wanted turn out pretty darn well too. I highly advocated for Clay Matthews, Brian Cushing, DeMarco Murray, Eric Decker, Torrey Smith, Ryan Kerrigan. and a slew of others. It really is fun to see some of the guys you follow in the draft pan out in the NFL. It’s always, “oh yeah, I wanted the Falcons to draft that guy.”
CBS Sports Draft has Taylor slotted for the 2nd or 3rd round. You think there’s any way we could get him in the 2nd? Probably not where (hopefully) we’ll be slotted in draft order. I know many won’t agree with you, but just saying that “you can get a feature back in the 3rd round or later” I think is a little deceiving. Look at what the Bucs got and they moved up in the first round to get him. It doesn’t appear to be a very deep RB class to be completely honest and there’s NOTHING in the way of free agency. My ultimate fear is that if we wait too late on an RB, we A) won’t get one that’s any better than Quizz (who I have high hopes for), and B) we’ll bring back Tip-Toe Turner for yet another year and as we know very well, if he’s on the roster, by goodness, Smitty’s going to force him in.

You can see some Matthews like tendencies in Chase Thomas.
Totally agree with your comments on the back drafting. It is a critical need for the Falcons. And if Taylor is there near the end of the first, he has to be the man. The upside is too high. Just look at Doug Martin and what he bring to the Bucs. Stepfan is the same weapon with a MUCH bettter OC to work with.
I am in the Jerry Reese/Ozzie Newsome mold. Best player available at the position of most critical need. For me, it is RB and the man is Taylor.

I also completely agree with you on the OL. You get full credit on coming up with that move on moving Clabo inside and moving either Sam Baker to the right side or perhaps Garrett Reynolds could make a move. I guess there’s a chance that Hawley could be the future at OC, but that seems to dwindling by the week. You and I couldn’t be any farther apart on Lamar Holmes. I see franchise LT all over him, but I know you still don’t care for the pick.
It’s still VERY early, but right now I’m rolling with a Big Boy DT in the first round and this is the year to grab one. I haven’t taken very close looks as of yet, but two that are on my radar are playing in The Dome on Saturday: Bama’s Jesse Williams (320) or UGA’s John Jenkins (358). Jenkins may not be first round material as of yet, but when Vance Walker is taking 84% of your snaps (more than Peters by the way), it’s time to invest in that behemoth DT for Mike Nolan to ramp up the defense to all-time high. Get a big boy DT and watch some of these other guys truly flourish (Abe, Bier, Babs, Peters, Cliff Matt, Mass). Of course we could always wait til’ later, but DT (especially big boy DT, 320+) seem to be a pretty deep class this year. Would love the Star kid from Utah, but seems he’ll be long gone. If not that, I could roll with best available OG, RB, or DE.
Think we’ll be OK with Michael Palmer and Chase Coffman for a year or so until we can either sign or groom our own TE, or just draft one high in 2014. And we could always convince Gonzo to come back for one more year, even though it really seems as though he might actually be done. I also think that one reason HD and our slots don’t get as many touches / looks is because of Gonzo. I think that they’re somewhat mutually exclusive, at least in Koetters offense and at least that’s my hope.
Good stuff.

D3, we in the Cage have a darn good record, a collective effort, when it comes to assessing the Falcons and making the selections. While I love the bold nature in which CBrass called the JJ11 move, the Decker or Smith selections could have been rewarding for us as well.
Daring is what it takes when it comes to the draft. We dare to think bold in the Cage. You did it with the Kerrigan call. CBrass went there with the JJ11 call. Remember the heat I took with both Spoon and Aldon Smith?
It is a hit and miss game. For each Spoon I have called, I missed with a Zebrie Sanders. But we keep coming back and taking the best shot we can. I love it!! I love being the Cocoa Mel….

Nothing but respect for the way we agree to disagree. And you know me. If I am wrong, I will be the first to man up. Recall I was anti Hip Hip Peria. Never liked the pick but give dude props for his work to get back to what we thought he could be. Dunta Robinson…overrrated but dude is a hitting fool at times; can’t cover a cupcake but will knock the hell out of you.
Holmes…I made a mistake and let myself be blinded by my admiration of Zebrie. Want to be fair and see what he could bring to the mix. And we will see in 2013 I hope.
But the OL target I want the Falcons to go after is the aforementioned Travis Frederick. I love this guy as a guard opposite Blalock and Konz (my choice for center of the future). This would allow us one more year with Clabo on the outside or perhaps, Mike Johnson could FINALLY show the hope we had when he was taken a few years back.

Agree on the Coffman re-signing. I think he could be an element in the attack going forward. As far as the big tackle goes, I can see your logic. But if we were to roll with smaller, attacking tackles in the 3-4, which is possible, I would be cool with it IF the LBs behind them are beasts!!
Chase Thomas and Sean Weatherspoon on the outside with the Bier Truck and a LB to be determined would be formidable inside. Could Dent be that man? He did explode on the scene as a 3-4 LB but was he an inside or outside LB. Will defer to my Dawg counterpart on that for analysis.

When reality says they are the the most obnoxious, vitriolic, outrageous, lying, cheating, pieces of trash in all of sports. And their cheating, lying, injurous, unethical bounty program proves it. Remember Drew Brees “demanding to see the evidence from Roger Goodell” and “our witchhunt on bountygate is the same as the Iraq war” garbage? I think Greg Mendel said when he lost all respect for them. Mine was after they beat us in 2010 and pissed on our logo, but any shred of respect that was left was gone after the bountygate, cover-up, and denial. BR (1:23) – well said! Let’s end that glimmer of playoff hope tonight.

To paraphrase a line from Rob Roy:
“I shall think of the Aints playoff hopes as dead until my Falcons make them so; then, I shall think on them no more!”

Heard about the prank on the radio this morning. Personally, I think it makes fans like me, who aren’t prone to throwing things, look bad. But whatever. I can’t control anyone’s actions but my own.
A lot has been said about there being a “mental hurdle” the Falcons need to get over regarding the Saints. I completely agree. You can’t be this close to locking up the division, having been successful all season, and let a third-rate team like the Saints continue to beat you. It’s like having your retirement-age dad beat you at basketball even though he has chronic back pain. That’s not okay.

Zoomie ,
I actually think Konz has been what happened with Clabo. Clabo struggled since Dahl left…playing next to Reynolds, Hawley, briefly next to Baker.
Konz has helped him, I think. Clabo made the Pro Bowl next to Dahl. Hasn’t played as well since. I do take into account the injuries, and Clabo’s technique. But it seems to me that he’s not a “stand alone” talent. He’s a guy that needs help.
Then again, maybe I’m giving the physical Konz credit just because I like the guy as a starting RG.
Like to see him take over for McClure at Center just as easily…of course, that opens up the RG spot all over again…

I think the egg event is a microcosm of the fans’ relation to the teams, and each other, and it is partly the players’ fault for their mundane approach to this divisional rivalry. The players are insisting this isn’t personal, on both sides (except Roddy and he’s not allowed to talk), and we hear the regurgitated “division game” or “business trip” or “we’re more concerned with ourselves” crap. Then you have the fans on both sides and their interactions, which are nothing short of hateful on a daily basis. The venom is spewing back and forth and yet all we hear from the players is PC commentary of the rich and famous, and gush, gush, gush. It is aggravating beyond description to us fans when another team pisses on your field and our QB and coach just throws roses about them as a team, like nothing happened. I would rather Matt or Smitty just didn’t say anything except “I can’t wait”, or like Turner said on the Network when asked to comment about the Saints, “We play them in 3 days.” That’s all he would say. Bravo, Michael.
What I’m saying is for the players to play the part of being hurt AND INSULTED instead of leaving it up to us fans to vent in our own idiotic (some say) way.

The guard issue could be solved by taking his running mate from Wisconsin, Travis Frederick. Bigger than Konz and just as technically sound.

Frederick and Konz could be interchangeable as well. And we know what we are getting when it comes to the capabilites of Wisconsin linemen.
About to roll north towards the Dome…got to get a jump on the traffic that I will probably encounter as I approach from the south metro.
See you all on the other side…GO FALCONS. Will be keeping it real in section 209!! I’m out.

RE: Big Ray’s 1:54.
You’re probably right. His injury may be better, plus he’s starting to click with Konz. Where Clabo stood out the most in the TB game was on the edge rushes, where he pulled around the corner and walled off the attacking LBs. He really seemed to move well when he was called to block in space. It kind of surprised me after seeing him practically trip over his own feet in pass protection at times.
Anyway, I’ve been hard on the guy, but he had a good game against Tampa.
I’ve seen some other things that get me a little excited about the Falcons moving forward, but I don’t want to bring it up just yet. I’m afraid I’ll jinx ‘em. (Been a Falcons fan since the team came into Atlanta in ‘66. I’m conditioned. I think I’m the one who inspired the series of commercials with Stevie W’s “Superstition.”)

Afternoon Cage – I’ve been stewing all day on this game. So nervous I can’t eat. I’ll be a wreck by game time. I loved Bradley’s article and think he nailed it. It’s time for this team to take that step and start making believers. I think it’s important for the player’s psyche. The coaches too.
One thing is CERTAIN… it’s important for my psyche!

Coop ,
Talk about a nervous wreck (though I’m really excited, is all)….it’s a good thing I’m on duty today and tomorrow…or I’d be looking for sort of libation to loosen myself up. LOL

BR – Just glad I’m in garrison. Don’t need to have my weapon on me with this kind of tension unless I’m down range.
