Atlanta Falcons: Birds Stumble to Ugly Win Over Cardinals

Going for Ugliest Win in NFL History?

111812 ATLANTA: Cardinals cornerback William Gay breaks up a pass to Falcons wide receiver Roddy White in the endzone during 1st half action in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

One of Those Days (AJC)

Goodness gracious. This is one of those games that sees the Falcons win a game they shouldn’t even been close. How can a team turn the ball over 6 times and still win a game? Well, the Falcons found a way to do it. A win is a win is a win, but if the Falcons play like they did today it’s going to a bad collapse ready to happen. A look at one of the ugliest wins in NFL history……..

A Win, But…………….

The Falcons once again found a way to win the game, especially at home, but goodness gracious, the idea of winning an NFL game with turning the ball over 6 times is unthinkable. Gone are the days of feeling good about coming back and winning the game. The Falcons put themselves in that position and it was just an ugly display of awfulness for 95% of the game. Matt Ryan threw 5 , yes FIVE, interceptions in one game and somehow won the game. The Falcons better improve in a very quick manner because a their schedule gets infinitely harder in a hurry.  However, the ugliest win in the world is always better than the prettiest loss in history.

Despite All the Bad, they Find a Way to Win……Again

It was one of the worst imaginable games, but the Falcons still somehow found a way to win the game. They are continuing to win the games even though not playing nearly close to their best. Although much in the post may sound negative, the underlying point is that this team keeps finding ways to win and that’s surely helping them in confidence. Watch out if this team ever puts together 60 minutes of their A game.

Ryan’s Collapse Day

111812 ATLANTA: Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan throws an interception to Cardinals cornerback William Gay under pressure by David Carter during 1st half action at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012. Ryan was intercepted five times during the game. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Was This One Picked? (AJC)

Maybe it’s the case that 2 or 3 of the interceptions that Matt Ryan threw weren’t his fault, but good Lord it was a terrible display by the franchise quarterback. It started by his first play from scrimmage that was picked from a tipped pass. Another pass was tipped, but overall this looked like the QB from 2009 that was tentative, worried, and unsure of himself. The lack of running game, rather the insistence of running Michael Turner regardless of the circumstances, likely is taking it’s toll. Ryan found a way to win the game in the end, but everyone’s new favorites Tampa Bay Bucs are ready to celebrate Ryan’s career interception day next Sunday.

Loss Hangover

You can’t call it a trap game when you lose the week before, but the Falcons suffered from an ugly game seeing a team that saw a weaker opponent and played accordingly. The Falcons came out flat, executed poorly, and generally played awful. It wasn’t a deal of coming off a great game that you won and celebrated as such, but rather a game that was awful and you felt just as terrible. It was a tough game to get up for, but the Falcons nearly blew an opportunity to win one at home.

Questionable Play-Calling

Let’s get past the point of starting and running Michael Turner in spite of what actually works, but the play-calling and route combinations were pretty horrid to say the least. It seemed as though once the Falcons started moving the ball with Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling that a stall flag was raised and Turner was inserted back in the game. Although painfully clear to most Bird Cage members that the new way to dominate on offense is with versatile and responsive running backs, Koetter, Smith and Co. are bound and determined to force Michael Turner regardless of what the circumstances say. Not only that, but there were several times where the WR route combinations were terrible. Several times it was seen receivers and tight ends were running into each other’s zones. There is so much talent to be seen, however it seemingly gets minimized by a somewhat decent defensive coordinator. Better get it fixed or it’s going to be a bad slide to end the season.

To Turner Do Us Part

Falcons running back Michael Turner finds the endzone on a short run for a touchdown and a 23-19 victory over the Cardinals during 2nd half action at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday, Nov. 18d, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Turner, Turner, Turner (AJC)

Evidently Mike Smith is attached to Michael Turner and feels that he can’t make success without him. It’s not a smash against Turner himself, but the fact remains that when Jacquizz Rodgers or Jason Snelling are the feature backs (sometimes in at the same time), the offense simply rolls better, that has been the case all the way back to preseason. It appears to many that the offense is at it’s peak when Quizz or Snelling are in the game. Funny enough, when the Falcons offense is rolling and doing great, there is a need to bring Turner back in the game to slow it down and generally make the offense predictable, weak, and not good. If Mike Smith doesn’t adjust accordingly, fans may be looking at 0-4 in the playoffs. This isn’t to say that Turner doesn’t have a place on the offense, but it’s painfully clear that, regardless of what the coaching staff force, he is no longer a feature back and the offense is insanely predictable when he’s in the game.

Anyone Else at Punt Returner

It doesn’t feel good to talk down about any Falcon and Dominique Franks has surely absorbed some criticism, but the simple fact remains that Franks is just not getting it done returning punts. Franks doesn’t fair catch and that leads to terrible starting field position and he looks very timid returning punts. Even when there’s several openings, Franks looks to get tackled as soon as possible and any dynamic ability he showed in the preseason is definitely gone. At what point will the Falcons coaching staff make a change? There’s always Harry Douglas and they brought back Tim Toone and, just like those first down Turner runs, returning punts are becoming wasted plays at best and horrible miscues that lead to awful field position at worst.

Always Ball First

Falcons defensive end John Abraham sacks Cardinals quarterback Ryan Lindley with Kroy Biermann applying pressure during 2nd half action at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday, Nov. 18d, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Abe and Kroy Stand Firm (AJC)

This really doesn’t apply to this game since the Cardinals won the toss and elected to defer, but throughout the season, it seems as though the Falcons always get the ball first to open the game. Mike Smith believes in getting the ball first and trying to go down and score to set the tone for the game. That’s all fine and good when you go down and score a touchdown, but more times than not the Falcons are going 3 and out, stalling on drives, and in worst case scenarios, turn the ball over essentially wasting a possession and even helping the opposing team. Most want to get their defense on the field first to see if they can make an early stop, score themselves first, set the tone for the game, and even get the ball back at halftime. Of course you can’t control who wins the toss, but when your defense is outperforming your offense, it may be time to rethink that strategy.

Time to Panic on Run Defense?

The Falcons continue to have major issues stopping the run. Each week the Birds are finding new ways to make rather unheralded running backs look like perennial Pro Bowlers on the ground. To it’s credit, the defense stiffened up when they needed to, but much of that had to do with pitiful quarterback play from the initial starter and then a brand new rookie. It’s a total team failure effort. The defensive tackles are getting blown up, the defensive ends are getting pinched, the linebackers are taking poor angles and getting blocked easily (Akeem Dent looking at you), and the defensive backs are taking poor angles themselves. And many of them are tackling poorly. Fans shudder to think about playing against some of the better running backs in the league and one of the best, rookie Doug Martin, looms in less than a week. Break out those prayer beads.

Offense Has Become Predictable

111812 ATLANTA: ----BABINEAUX TOUCHDOWN-- Falcons defensive end Jonathan Babineaux recovers a Cardinals turnover during 2nd quarter action and runs it into the endzone for a touchdown to cut the Cardinals lead to 13-10 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Great Play by Babs (AJC)

Attribute it to play-calling, the fact that Turner makes the offense predictable, weak offensive line play, or just poor execution, but the strain is becoming apparent on Matt Ryan and the offense. The Cardinals and other defenses are pinning their ears back and going after Ryan and trying to throw him off his game. It worked pretty well on Sunday. Also throw in those wasted 1st down runs and it’s easy to see the offense getting picked up with ease. Evidently there’s a hesitancy to let Ryan run the no-huddle. To be fair, the offense has been pretty good throughout the year, but as the season starts it’s final drive, the Falcons are showing some eerily similarities to seasons past.

McClain a Future Starter?

Some positive news from the game is the continued excellent play by cornerback Robert McClain. The undrafted free agent is potentially moving out of a role player / nickelback and possibly into a future starter for the Falcons at some point. With their two other corners on the downside of 30 and Brent Grimes coming back from a significant injury (and likely not re-signed), McClain’s good play is a great and needed sign for the future.

Spot on Commentary

We all complain about the media and the game announcers, but Daryl Johnston and his crew was pretty spot on. At one point Johnston said that “if the Falcons play like this against a quality opponent, it’s going to be a different outcome.” Also at some point in the game, Tony Siragusa said the “Falcons were doing everything in their power to keep the Cardinals in the game.”

Minimal Impact from new DE’s

This shouldn’t come as a massive surprise, but Ray Edwards release didn’t lead to any new explosions from any of the other defensive ends Lawrence Sidbury, Cliff Matthews, or Jonathan Massaquoi. It was only one game and Kroy Biermann is still taking the majority of snaps as the new starter, but there’s a hope that one of these guys can show some promise.

Just Another Bad Game or Paper Tigers?

111812 ATLANTA: Falcons cornerback Thomas DeCoud (left) and Drew Davis celebrate a defensive stop against the Cardinals during 2nd half action at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Despite Everything, they're 9-1 (AJC)

Are we the ones who are wrong after all? The Falcons are 9-1 and that’s nothing to sneeze at in the NFL, but it’s getting harder and harder to defend some of the things the Falcons do and they way they play. They blew an enormous opportunity to essentially bury the hated Saints and the Bucs are suddenly right on their heels in the division. They obviously can’t control their schedule and have won 90% of the games they’ve played, but many of what seemed big victories at the time (Chargers, Eagles, etc) aren’t looking nearly as good, lost a huge division game, and have looked downright terrible against some of the league’s worst (Raiders, Panthers, Cardinals). Many in the media have felt the Falcons are paper tigers of sorts, gobbling up weaker opponents and looking generally weak overall. Fact is, fans are having a harder and harder time defending the Birds as of late, but they are tied for the best record in the NFL through 10 games and every team beneath them has their own set of problems and issues. Bottom line is we’ll know everything we need to know in the next 11-12 days. It won’t matter how ugly the wins are if they find a way to pull out W’s against the Bucs and Saints.

Game of the Year to Date

What an enormous game looms for the Falcons. The Falcons travel to Tampa Bay to play one of the hottest teams in the NFL and play one of the biggest games of the season. Considering what’s at stake, it has to be the largest. The Bucs are only 3 games behind the Falcons and winning here would put the Birds in a great position for the division, giving them a 4 game lead with 5 games to go. However, if the Falcons lose, the door swings wide open once again putting the Bucs only two games behind the Falcons and some difficult games coming up (Saints, Giants, @ Lions). If the Falcons can go down and win any way possible, fans will get some sense of comfort back. If the Birds go blow one on the road, as they did in New Orleans, it’s a whole new ballgame.

Bird Cage Faithful’s Turn

1) Simple Run Stuff – your thoughts on the Falcons ugly, ugly win?

2) What in goodness name happened to Matt Ryan?

3) What’s your confidence level right now?

4) Did the Falcons suffer from a “loss hangover” or did they just play down to their competition?

5) What’s going on with the play-calling on offense?

6) Will the coaches stick with Turner regardless of the realities on the ground?

7) What is the deal with punt returner?

8.) Does it annoy you that the Falcons always get the ball first?

9) Time to hit the panic button on run defense? Why so bad?

10) Why has the offense become so predictable?

11) Is Robert McClain a potential future starter?

12) Are the Falcons paper tigers after all?

13) How big is the Bucs game on Sunday?

DaveD, no problem in the cage with your posts.

JJ, Roddy has a loud mouth but he ususally tells it like it is. If the FO goes into the next game with the same attitude they will leave with different one.

What’s up boys?

Ol’ CAJ finally got the hint and left. No ban needed. He did come back as Midtown something for awhile and left again.

Worried about Julio. That was a stupid decision to play him, IMO.

Think Dent is getting better, surely good enough to replace Lofton. He got torched on that long run, though.

Are HD and Gonzalez mutually exclusive, b/c it seems that HD is non-existent in this new offense. Either that or HD just isn’t nearly good as we all thought.

Finally saw what SP has been talking about RE: the route combinations. Some of them were pitiful. I remember several times seeing receivers running right in each others areas.

Too bad Kevin Cones been hurt, he’s really missing a chance. And despite that TD from Drew Davis, he’s been M.I.A. since.

Still going with 1) DT, 2) RB, 3) LB is my draft order. Hard to see it changing much to be honest. Would also like to see DE Michael Johnson in Falcons red and black via free agency.

MB: Nor do you ever ever turn around and run backwards a la Barry Sanders, he did that one time, and I almost spit my beer out. I think he ran backwards 10 yards and netted 1.

Gotta defend Quizz here. The dude has made big plays all year, with limited opportunities. Helped seal a few close ones. And the play you are talking about MB, he would have been tackled for a loss. He made a yard out of a blown up play. That’s what a good RB does.

I just can’t for the life of me figure out this deal with Turner. My family members and I try and come up with many different reasons to understand why there’s this obsession with plowing Michael Turner in the game when he clearly does not produce. I knew this would be a problem when we brought him back. Here’s the different possibilities we’ve come up with…..

1) Turner is Mike Smith’s ball control crutch that he refuses to give up

2) They are scared of pissing him off, remember the (their offense, their team) comments?

3) They are going overboard in giving him respect and praise for what he’s done for our franchise

4) Smith is delusional and one of the most stubborn @ss men in the world

5) They feel like Quizz and Snelling can’t handle the load

6) It’s as Big Lou said and just simply that they can’t come to grips with the way the offense “should be” as opposed to the way it “has been.”

7) Mike Malarkey’s ghost haunts the coordinators box and takes over Koetter’s play-calling on gamedays.

In all seriousness, I just don’t get it. I know I’m very biased to this discussion because I said I’d be perfectly OK parting with Turner this past off-season and rolling with Quizz, Snelling, and A-Smith in the backfield. But really, it’s like night and day when Turner’s in the backfield and when either Quizz or Snelling are in, and that goes all the way back to preseason.

As a matter of fact, check these two items out from the first preseason game back on August 11th……….

Are Turner’s Days Numbered?
No, but he definitely didn’t seem to fit as well in the new offensive approach as Jacquizz Rodgers does. That’s probably way over-simplifying it and it was only one preseason game, but Rodgers looked excellent and Turner not so much. Turner only got five carries, so it’s not really fair to judge him on that performance alone, but if Rodgers continues to look like he did on Thursday night, it’s going to be harder and harder to keep him off the field.

How’s that quote go, “the more things change……………………..”

D3

November 19th, 2012
8:51 pm

And from our second preseason game on August 19th………….

Turner Just Doesn’t Seem to Fit
This shouldn’t be seen as a call to immediately drop Turner or that he can’t give some good contributions to the Falcons, but he no longer seems to be a feature back, at least so far and at least in this offense. Turner looks slow and the offense seems to grind to a halt when he’s in the game. That’s surely an oversimplification because the offensive line has it’s issues and sometimes plays aren’t called right, but Turner doesn’t seem to fit in this new offense. Whether it’s a not a good scheme fit for him, the dreaded “30 age wall” has taken hold, or some combination of both, Turner looks ineffective, plain and simple. Maybe it’s only preseason and he’ll hit get his mojo soon, but right now, Jacquizz Rodgers should be getting most of the backfield snaps, for when he’s in the game, the offense seems way more productive.

If players read this stuff, which I firmly believe they DO NOT, I bet Turner absolutely hates my guts. It really is nothing personal (hell, I bought my mom a Michael Turner t-shirt a few years ago), but the fact is I believe much of our offensive woes have to do with plowing a round peg in a square hole, or trying to plug a sta-puft marshmallow into a keyhole.

D3, I’m only going to tell you this once. When we got Turner from SD, they didn’t want to let him go. Their owner found out that TD was fooling around with his wife and told TD that he would trade him if TD would stop the affair and keep MT on the payroll until he dies. You didn’t hear that from me. OK?

Getting way ahead of myself here, but I don’t wanna see anybody other than Konz and Blalock moving forward on this line. I think we should continue our search to bolster this line in the upcoming draft.

DT or LT/RT/RG in the draft.

Gotta build these lines. I can wait on LB. RB is definitely a need, but how high would they go? I don’t think any RB would look good without a line to run behind. Gotta get the lines fixed before investing any more in skilled positions.

Big Lou / Wabe / “Trenches Debate” — Totally agree on the defensive line. As BR has noted many times, we essentially have one starter worthy guy (Peters) and he’s not even 100%. Sure, Babs has been good and can still be good for us, but is an every down DT next year @ 32 years old? Walker is a good rotation guy, Jerry is a bust, and Robertson is in the Smitty Witness Protection Program. I’m firm in my belief that any DT we get has to be well over 315+ lbs. Do we really need yet another 295 – 305 lb “quick” DT, when we have 3-4 of them already? No. There are a ton of good options for that route in this years draft. Big John Jenkins from UGA will likely be available, but not quite sure he’s 1st round worthy material. I firmly believe that a big butt DT will make everyone (DEs, LBs) look better.

I can’t really commit to the offensive line the way you guys are. I believe that Holmes is our future at LT, Blalock is our stud at LG, Konz @ center, move Clabo inside to RG, and re-sign Baker to a decent deal and move him to RT. That gives us a much better OL with minimal investment. I can’t see us spending megabucks for a FA OL, because you rarely get your money’s worth. All that said, I wouldn’t be upset in the least if we take an OL, specifically G if they’re not going to move Clabo inside. I just think it would be a shame to never TRY that lineup. It could give us a potentially very good OL for next to nothing.

In terms of an RB, I wouldn’t sell taking one early short, especially given our circumstances. Surely not in the 1st round, but look what Doug Martin’s done for the Bucs as a rookie and they even lost Carl Nicks before the season started. 3rd round would be the absolute last I’d wait for an RB. Again, if we don’t take one relatively high, we’ll likely keep Turner and his $8 million salary for his final year of his contract and we know if he’s on the team, than Smith will play regardless of how crappy his production is.

I think Robert McClain is making cornerback not nearly a big of need as we initially thought. We can roll with Michael Palmer and Chase Coffman for a year, IMO, or try and convince Gonzo to come back for one more. Even though I can’t say it wouldn’t be a decent pick, I can’t see spending a 1st round pick on a DE when they’ll be facing the same problems all our other DE’s have had in getting no help whatsoever from the DTs.

Fact is, we got several areas to address this upcoming off-season and only so many draft picks and money.

Big game coming up this Sunday. And I know our Birds can beat the Bucs. But they have got to play better football than they did yesterday.

Big Ray . I can tell you there is know one here that likes this team no more than I do . And I have seen a big change in what they have today than what they have ever had before.I have served 4 years for my country back in the late seventies . And I believe in what we stand for here in the God blessed USA. A big Part of that is freedom of speech We just got done a week ago giving thanks and appreciation for the people who some gave there lives for those rights. And brother I try to pick up my cross daily.I should only hope we all do.But that is also still one of our rights. And I know you were addressing some one else but I read deeper than that in your comment.

I love to read what you all have to say about our team and I read much more than I post .I have read numerous blogs and I also don’t like what a lot of people and sport writers say or don;t say about the Falcons . There is not any site out there as good as the one D3 has put together here and hats off to him for taking time for all of the post he puts up.

I do hope Jones is going to be OK. As for as the Falcons Go I am very happy and proud of them and this season . They still have 6 games left and the playoffs. And just 2 more wins and they have clinched the south . We all want them to beat the Saints here at the dome next week tho and if what ever they did not do to the Cards . They have got to do to the Saints to win. And I really don’t want to see a loss to them again this year. Nuff said Be blessed Cage

Points well made D3.

Forgot about Holmes in my initial outlook. Agreed, about him, Konz, and Blalock. Still think we need one more solid plug on the right side of that line. Not comfortable moving forward with Baker at RT with Clabo next to him. Both of those guys are still as suspect as can be.

Completely agree about DT though. As you pointed out at some point yesterday, having a big boy DT that commands double teams would make everybody on this line and on this defense better. It’d shore up the run defense, and it’d help our ends drastically.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1414008-atlanta-falcons-need-to-give-michael-turner-the-ray-edwards-treatment-cut-him

Carasik says we’d be on the hook for $2.5 million even if we cut him in the off-season. Yikes, between him and Ray Edwards, that would like $7 million in DEAD MONEY. Luckily, we don’t have hardly anyone to re-up and cutting Turner and not renewing Grimes would still free up almost $16 million and that’s not even assuming Gonzalez does retire and takes the $7.5 million with him.

That’s one hell of a contract that Turner got. Not even able to get rid of him without costing money even into the last year of his contract. Geez.

I disagree with many assessments on Turner. Turner is the best running back the Falcons have. Rodgers ability to receive the ball does not make up for his inability to run inside. Those same inside running issues are something I attribute to playcalling and the no huddle offense. The running back positions struggles are exactly what the media is saying. That is the lack of touches.

Our oline is pretty much the same since 2008 minus Dahl + Konz.. The touches that the backs do get will be on either first or second. That is acceptable. What is not acceptable is checking out of run into a 2-yard flair pass.

They will not run two consecutive run plays whether or not Rodgers gains 13 yards. Cannot be all pass happy in the first half and then be dumbfounded when the run struggles in the third and fourth quarters.

No huddle/audible=less exotic run blocking+less touches

Huddle=exotic run formations more touches

Cannot have it both ways. Cannot talk about fixing it every day. Sometimes we have to tighten our chinstraps and find out exactly what we are made of.

We really lucked out with McClain. Great pickup. Never saw it coming.

I was thinking that the kid from Notre Dame (Darrin Walls) would be the “great find”.

Birdman ,

Agreed all the way (and appreciate your service to our country)…but what did I say that rubbed you wrong? I can be too flippant with my speech sometimes….1st amendment right or not…

E43 — Will just have to respectfully disagree with on Turner. I’d venture to say that while Quizz may not have proven to be our best back, he certainly allows our offense to be much better, less predictable, and generally more explosive simply due to his versatility. I’ve said on every occasion that it’s unlikely that he’s our future feature back, but the offense just does do better when Turner is not in the game. Yes, our OL is not very good and that’s something we’ve all complained about for some time, but Smith and Co. rolled with the exact same OL from last year, I guess expecting a different result with Turner being a year older and much slower. Speaking of Turner himself, he just does not hit the hole with any authority. He’s always tip-toeing around instead of just hitting the hole. I don’t think he should be cut or anything like that and he’s already ranking as the Falcons all-time best running back, but he doesn’t fit in this offense. JMHO.

Saw this on another Falcons blog and it sums up much of what we Falcons fans feel………

The amazing thing was the entire stadium could feel the offense stalling out whenever Turner walked onto the field. Being there in person gave me a different perspective. You could literally FEEL the frustration as a Turner-based offense slowed our O to a near complete halt. People weren’t booing, but there was a large number of sighs anytime Turner took the ball. – DW

MT, imo, was a good rb in his time. I’m getting tired of hearing the national media referring to him as running with lead shoes. The cage is already on that. No one has offered anything to support why we keep running him with a 1.5 avg. Thank you for your time Mike, have a good retirement.

How bout Da Bears? Man, we thought we looked ugly.. the Bears D is getting schooled

FFL: My only gripe with Ryan this week is FFL. He gave me a big whopping 4 points. But The Owls still leading in the standings

I thought that maybe your post was at me as one of the anyone elses . Being you posted right behind me and my thoughts on the Birds loss. I am sorry I took it that way and also for not reading things right. I just took it the wrong way and I am truly sorry that I did.

Working away from home at my age for weeks at a time is starting to get to me. The 3 most important things to me is God ‘ Family ‘ Country. And I am thankful for having a job.

I am sorry tho man .Please forgive me for being wrong

D3 – Welcome. I can’t agree more. You build your teams from the inside out. Remember when I said the Spoon pick was a bad move. It had nothing to do with Spoon, it was that we needed a DT or an OC or OG at the time. Who knows if Dent is any good when you can’t anchor the line and push the pocket.

My draft is DT, DE, RB, MLB, CB, TE, RT

At least Rogers can catch. Turner was tackled for a loss, dropped an easy catch and badly missed a block that almost got Ryan hammered. And that was in about five minutes.

Depending on talent available, I’d switch DE and DT.
