One of Those Days (AJC)
Goodness gracious. This is one of those games that sees the Falcons win a game they shouldn’t even been close. How can a team turn the ball over 6 times and still win a game? Well, the Falcons found a way to do it. A win is a win is a win, but if the Falcons play like they did today it’s going to a bad collapse ready to happen. A look at one of the ugliest wins in NFL history……..
The Falcons once again found a way to win the game, especially at home, but goodness gracious, the idea of winning an NFL game with turning the ball over 6 times is unthinkable. Gone are the days of feeling good about coming back and winning the game. The Falcons put themselves in that position and it was just an ugly display of awfulness for 95% of the game. Matt Ryan threw 5 , yes FIVE, interceptions in one game and somehow won the game. The Falcons better improve in a very quick manner because a their schedule gets infinitely harder in a hurry. However, the ugliest win in the world is always better than the prettiest loss in history.
It was one of the worst imaginable games, but the Falcons still somehow found a way to win the game. They are continuing to win the games even though not playing nearly close to their best. Although much in the post may sound negative, the underlying point is that this team keeps finding ways to win and that’s surely helping them in confidence. Watch out if this team ever puts together 60 minutes of their A game.
Was This One Picked? (AJC)
Maybe it’s the case that 2 or 3 of the interceptions that Matt Ryan threw weren’t his fault, but good Lord it was a terrible display by the franchise quarterback. It started by his first play from scrimmage that was picked from a tipped pass. Another pass was tipped, but overall this looked like the QB from 2009 that was tentative, worried, and unsure of himself. The lack of running game, rather the insistence of running Michael Turner regardless of the circumstances, likely is taking it’s toll. Ryan found a way to win the game in the end, but everyone’s new favorites Tampa Bay Bucs are ready to celebrate Ryan’s career interception day next Sunday.
You can’t call it a trap game when you lose the week before, but the Falcons suffered from an ugly game seeing a team that saw a weaker opponent and played accordingly. The Falcons came out flat, executed poorly, and generally played awful. It wasn’t a deal of coming off a great game that you won and celebrated as such, but rather a game that was awful and you felt just as terrible. It was a tough game to get up for, but the Falcons nearly blew an opportunity to win one at home.
Let’s get past the point of starting and running Michael Turner in spite of what actually works, but the play-calling and route combinations were pretty horrid to say the least. It seemed as though once the Falcons started moving the ball with Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling that a stall flag was raised and Turner was inserted back in the game. Although painfully clear to most Bird Cage members that the new way to dominate on offense is with versatile and responsive running backs, Koetter, Smith and Co. are bound and determined to force Michael Turner regardless of what the circumstances say. Not only that, but there were several times where the WR route combinations were terrible. Several times it was seen receivers and tight ends were running into each other’s zones. There is so much talent to be seen, however it seemingly gets minimized by a somewhat decent defensive coordinator. Better get it fixed or it’s going to be a bad slide to end the season.
Turner, Turner, Turner (AJC)
Evidently Mike Smith is attached to Michael Turner and feels that he can’t make success without him. It’s not a smash against Turner himself, but the fact remains that when Jacquizz Rodgers or Jason Snelling are the feature backs (sometimes in at the same time), the offense simply rolls better, that has been the case all the way back to preseason. It appears to many that the offense is at it’s peak when Quizz or Snelling are in the game. Funny enough, when the Falcons offense is rolling and doing great, there is a need to bring Turner back in the game to slow it down and generally make the offense predictable, weak, and not good. If Mike Smith doesn’t adjust accordingly, fans may be looking at 0-4 in the playoffs. This isn’t to say that Turner doesn’t have a place on the offense, but it’s painfully clear that, regardless of what the coaching staff force, he is no longer a feature back and the offense is insanely predictable when he’s in the game.
It doesn’t feel good to talk down about any Falcon and Dominique Franks has surely absorbed some criticism, but the simple fact remains that Franks is just not getting it done returning punts. Franks doesn’t fair catch and that leads to terrible starting field position and he looks very timid returning punts. Even when there’s several openings, Franks looks to get tackled as soon as possible and any dynamic ability he showed in the preseason is definitely gone. At what point will the Falcons coaching staff make a change? There’s always Harry Douglas and they brought back Tim Toone and, just like those first down Turner runs, returning punts are becoming wasted plays at best and horrible miscues that lead to awful field position at worst.
Abe and Kroy Stand Firm (AJC)
This really doesn’t apply to this game since the Cardinals won the toss and elected to defer, but throughout the season, it seems as though the Falcons always get the ball first to open the game. Mike Smith believes in getting the ball first and trying to go down and score to set the tone for the game. That’s all fine and good when you go down and score a touchdown, but more times than not the Falcons are going 3 and out, stalling on drives, and in worst case scenarios, turn the ball over essentially wasting a possession and even helping the opposing team. Most want to get their defense on the field first to see if they can make an early stop, score themselves first, set the tone for the game, and even get the ball back at halftime. Of course you can’t control who wins the toss, but when your defense is outperforming your offense, it may be time to rethink that strategy.
The Falcons continue to have major issues stopping the run. Each week the Birds are finding new ways to make rather unheralded running backs look like perennial Pro Bowlers on the ground. To it’s credit, the defense stiffened up when they needed to, but much of that had to do with pitiful quarterback play from the initial starter and then a brand new rookie. It’s a total team failure effort. The defensive tackles are getting blown up, the defensive ends are getting pinched, the linebackers are taking poor angles and getting blocked easily (Akeem Dent looking at you), and the defensive backs are taking poor angles themselves. And many of them are tackling poorly. Fans shudder to think about playing against some of the better running backs in the league and one of the best, rookie Doug Martin, looms in less than a week. Break out those prayer beads.
Great Play by Babs (AJC)
Attribute it to play-calling, the fact that Turner makes the offense predictable, weak offensive line play, or just poor execution, but the strain is becoming apparent on Matt Ryan and the offense. The Cardinals and other defenses are pinning their ears back and going after Ryan and trying to throw him off his game. It worked pretty well on Sunday. Also throw in those wasted 1st down runs and it’s easy to see the offense getting picked up with ease. Evidently there’s a hesitancy to let Ryan run the no-huddle. To be fair, the offense has been pretty good throughout the year, but as the season starts it’s final drive, the Falcons are showing some eerily similarities to seasons past.
Some positive news from the game is the continued excellent play by cornerback Robert McClain. The undrafted free agent is potentially moving out of a role player / nickelback and possibly into a future starter for the Falcons at some point. With their two other corners on the downside of 30 and Brent Grimes coming back from a significant injury (and likely not re-signed), McClain’s good play is a great and needed sign for the future.
We all complain about the media and the game announcers, but Daryl Johnston and his crew was pretty spot on. At one point Johnston said that “if the Falcons play like this against a quality opponent, it’s going to be a different outcome.” Also at some point in the game, Tony Siragusa said the “Falcons were doing everything in their power to keep the Cardinals in the game.”
This shouldn’t come as a massive surprise, but Ray Edwards release didn’t lead to any new explosions from any of the other defensive ends Lawrence Sidbury, Cliff Matthews, or Jonathan Massaquoi. It was only one game and Kroy Biermann is still taking the majority of snaps as the new starter, but there’s a hope that one of these guys can show some promise.
Despite Everything, they're 9-1 (AJC)
Are we the ones who are wrong after all? The Falcons are 9-1 and that’s nothing to sneeze at in the NFL, but it’s getting harder and harder to defend some of the things the Falcons do and they way they play. They blew an enormous opportunity to essentially bury the hated Saints and the Bucs are suddenly right on their heels in the division. They obviously can’t control their schedule and have won 90% of the games they’ve played, but many of what seemed big victories at the time (Chargers, Eagles, etc) aren’t looking nearly as good, lost a huge division game, and have looked downright terrible against some of the league’s worst (Raiders, Panthers, Cardinals). Many in the media have felt the Falcons are paper tigers of sorts, gobbling up weaker opponents and looking generally weak overall. Fact is, fans are having a harder and harder time defending the Birds as of late, but they are tied for the best record in the NFL through 10 games and every team beneath them has their own set of problems and issues. Bottom line is we’ll know everything we need to know in the next 11-12 days. It won’t matter how ugly the wins are if they find a way to pull out W’s against the Bucs and Saints.
What an enormous game looms for the Falcons. The Falcons travel to Tampa Bay to play one of the hottest teams in the NFL and play one of the biggest games of the season. Considering what’s at stake, it has to be the largest. The Bucs are only 3 games behind the Falcons and winning here would put the Birds in a great position for the division, giving them a 4 game lead with 5 games to go. However, if the Falcons lose, the door swings wide open once again putting the Bucs only two games behind the Falcons and some difficult games coming up (Saints, Giants, @ Lions). If the Falcons can go down and win any way possible, fans will get some sense of comfort back. If the Birds go blow one on the road, as they did in New Orleans, it’s a whole new ballgame.
1) Simple Run Stuff – your thoughts on the Falcons ugly, ugly win?
2) What in goodness name happened to Matt Ryan?
3) What’s your confidence level right now?
4) Did the Falcons suffer from a “loss hangover” or did they just play down to their competition?
5) What’s going on with the play-calling on offense?
6) Will the coaches stick with Turner regardless of the realities on the ground?
7) What is the deal with punt returner?
8.) Does it annoy you that the Falcons always get the ball first?
9) Time to hit the panic button on run defense? Why so bad?
10) Why has the offense become so predictable?
11) Is Robert McClain a potential future starter?
12) Are the Falcons paper tigers after all?
13) How big is the Bucs game on Sunday?

Pay no attention to Yastinkas…but read the blogger comments below.
If the players read any blogs (and they really shouldn’t), then they oughta take a gander at this one.
No, seriously….our defense would do well to get it in their heads that Tampa doesn’t respect them and expects to run them slap over. That oughta get some fire going and maybe we can make tackles to start the game, instead of figuring out whether we should start tackling late in the 2nd quarter or early in the 3rd quarter….
The smart-a$$es talking about Ryan’s accuracy clearly think he’s played like this all season….idiots…

Agreed per your 2:31 post. I’m looking for a fired up defense on Sunday. They have their work cut out, but they can get the job done.
I’m really looking forward to the ball of playmaking passion that is Sean Weatherspoon. That guy really brings his teammates up, and I think a lot of folks really don’t see that effect for what it is.

BR: I saw a comment on another blog yesterday about the challenge rule review being imminent due to Texans-Lions being a nationally televised game with a bigger audience (thus making it evident to more people just how dumb a rule it is). I wouldn’t chalk it up to disrespect or ignorance toward the Falcons.
Actually, scratch that. Not one commentator yesterday mentioned that the same thing happened during the Falcons game, despite it being only four days earlier. That’s pretty lame.

Sick, isn’t it? I get your point about the nationally televised part…it makes sense. And normally I’d say that I or anyone else was just overreacting and doing what Falcon fans do. But you realized it yourself – nobody said “hey, this happened less than a week ago with the Falcons.”
Maybe it’s because it didn’t affect the outcome of the game (but almost did).
Or maybe it’s just business as usual….

With Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III having strong rookie performances, Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin probably won’t win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. But he should garner serious consideration. The 31st pick in the 2012 draft out of Boise State, Martin leads the NFL with 1,319 yards from scrimmage and has 1,019 of those yards in the past six games. According to ESPN Stats & Information, only two other rookies in NFL history have ever amassed 1,000 yards from scrimmage in a six-game span: Eric Dickerson in 1983 and Edgerrin James in 1999. That’s pretty good company.
Martin will add to that total this week against an Atlanta defense that has allowed a league-high 2.2 yards per rush after first contact this season. Martin has averaged 2.3 yards per rush after contact, fourth best among players with at least 75 rushes.
Motivation….motivation…motivation….

I havent seen anybody run behind this line. I do think turner has lost his ability to run the ball. But no one has steped up either. that makes me think that the line isn’t run blocking. It seems they are in pass defence mode all the time and that’s not that good either. The run game used to open up the pass for Ryan and he was better then. now everybody knows he going to pass and it’s getting harder for him to play his game. I don’t read all this stuff so I don’t know if anyone has noticed they arent going to the no huddle nearly as much anymore. This has always been Ryan’s strong suit he has a good eye for whats going on on the feild. and most of the time it keeps a defence on the feild longer than they want to be. I;m very happy with the way the season has gone to this point. But they seem to be playing to the other teams ability insteed of playing at the level everybody knows they have. To much is being made of the playoof history of this team. first you have to get to the playoffs and they are very close to that again. Five wining seasons in a row is something we all thought we would see six years ago but here we are. Mabe one day very soon we will see the team the season like they were on fire but until we do lets enjoy the fact that they are wining even if it is ugly from time to time.

It can’t be stated enough—this by far is the biggest game of the season…win and the divisision is all but locked up!
The team I most fear the Falcons playing in the playoffs is the Packers. Get any other team in the dome and I like the Falcons chances, but the Packers will be a very tough out. I’m hoping the loss in Seattle comes back to haunt them. Then again, as D3 implied, gotta beat the best to be the best.

JJ: I am responding to where you objected when I said that Matty is not the best qb we ever had. Steve Bartkowski was much better than Matt at throwing the deep ball–no question about it. In fact, It was Bart who invented “BIG BEN LEFT” and “BIG BEN RIGHT” which is the equivalent of the HAIL MARY PASS. Doug Flutie probably made the biggest hail mary college bomb in history–but it was steve bartkowski who invented the play. Getting back to matt ryan, ANY QB WHO THROWS 5 PICKS IN ONE HALF OF FOOTBALL; and FOUR PICKS IN ONE QUARTER IS CERTAINLY NOT AN ELITE QUARTERBACK. I was fed up with Matt after the first quarter of the Cardinals game after he had already thrown four picks–that I thought if he kept it up for an entire game, Ice may have thrown 16 picks for the game. If Matty Ice doesnt improve, he may possible throw double digit picks in a single game–as many as 10 or more if the guy just doenst catch on to the pro game. Steve Bartkowski never had that problem of throwing picks. I think the most picks steve ever had in a single game was no more than 2 in his entire career. Matt Ryan is a BUSTED draft pick–BUT he is good enough to win the Falcons a superbowl this season. Stay tuned!

SOMEBODY NEEDS TO TELL THE TRUTH

There’s been some dicussion (debate) in the Cage about the level of importance (significance) of the game against the Bucs, IMO, this game is HUGE!. This game, more so than the up-coming game against the Saints, will show us what kind of football team we truly have. If we lose, it will further harden the skepticisms, concerns of some here in the cage, about the way we’ve been winning, playing as of late.
IMHO, this game could very well decide, or should I say, chart the course, become a precursor of how we perform against the Saints on thursday night…and how we’ll be seeded, how far we go into the playoffs. This game will determine, IMHO, if we go into the playoffs limping (leaking), or we go into the playoffs with our mettle tested (forged) by wins against Bucs/Saints, which will, IMO, catapult us as a legitimate threat in the playoffs…and dare I say, Superbowl Champions.
…And, If I may, we lose against Bucs, Saints lose against 49′ers, the game against the Saints really wont matter as much…their playoff hopes will be on life support anyways. But, the Bucs will be staring us down, stalking like a Lion, closing in on a gazelle. We win in Tampa, get our revenge against the Saints, we control our seeding (playoff path), puts us on very strong footing…rather than being dictated to, by wins and loses of other division (conference teams). IMHO.

The next 6 gms will definitely test the Falcons ability to establish a rushing OFF, which is a serious challenge since we failed to improve it coming out of our bye week. Even though we have some solid size at every position except LT and OC, we can’t seem to get any kind of push anywhere along the OL.
While I understand OC TMcClure’s comments about play calling being a factor on 3rd and short, it certainly doesn’t explain the consistent failures on all of the other downs and distances. We’re not just getting stopped on many rushing attempts, we’re getting stopped for losses, which means DLs are getting instant penetration.
Not only is our OL not getting any push, they’re not preventing DLs from getting push or penetration. No matter what our record ends up being during the regular season, we’are not going to go very far in the playoffs if we continue having trouble running the ball and stopping the run.

Great point. sure the next 6 games will determine how good the falcons will be this year. the next 6 opponents are all tough teams and the Falcons will be lucky to split and finish 12-4 to end the regular season. The Falcons will probably make the playoffs, but I think that this years team is STRONG ENOUGH and POWERFUL ENOUGH to win this years superbowl. I think that coach mike smith should tweak just ONE thing and a superbowl championship will be in the bag! I believe the Falcons could have already been 10-0 instead of 9-1 had they focused on funning either QUIZ ROGERS or JASON SNELLING in short yardage situations instead of the overweight PIG Michael Turner. Snelling is light-out in short yardage situations and quiz continually makes people miss during his runs. Had the Falcons done that against New Orleans they would have outscored N.O. probably 41-27 and won that football game and everybody would have jumped on the Falcons superbowl bandwagon. Again, if coach mike smith is reading this blog, coach I am BEGGING YOU to run Jason Snelling whenever we come up 2nd and 1; 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 ALL SHORT YARDAGE SITUATIONS. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the results because Jason, I guarantee you, will get the yardage, move the chains, and the Falcons will win games much easier than struggling to rack their brains to pull out nail-biters. It doenst make sense and its uncalled for. JUST ONE TWEAK WILL FIX THE FALCONS AND TURN THEM INTO THIS YEARS SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS. Go Falcons!

I wonder how long it’s going to take for DT CPeters to gets into gm condition? We need him to get there as soon as possible to see how much impact he’ll have on our poor run DEF. If he can get it done, our passing OFF is certainly good enough to get us to a Superbowl even without a consistent rushing OFF, assuming all of our OFF weapons are healthy.
A consistent pass rush, even if it doesn’t produce a lot of sacks, will definitely help a secondary that’s been playing lights out.

DOL’s three key matchups lacks one thing – some LB vs. Doug Martin.
That said, a few thoughts:
1) Thomas “oops, I missed that tackle” Decoud might be staying on the field despite his miscues for one reason – Charles Mitchell continues to be hurt. I’m not saying Decoud is a wash, but when is the last time he actually had a pretty good game? 4 games ago against Philly if you ask me….
Lack of production is not cutting it under Nolan…see Ray Edwards. What word we could get on Mitchell was consistently good and Robert McClain has shown that the Apprenticeship Program might not extend to all positions these days (though it does extend to most). Decoud needs to get his act together.
2) Maybe John Abraham can get some holding calls or something today. He won’t have it easy against the Bucs LT, though.
3) D-Rob against Vincent Jackson or Mike Williams bothers me. Both guys have size, both have speed. Give them too much space and….well, let’s just hope D-Rob keep his head on a swivel and so do Willy Mo and Decoud. Otherwise we’re in some trouble.
Being without Asante means we might have less chance of getting burnt due to jumping routes, but that also means any backups or Nickle guys is going to be Owens…or Franks. Hmmmm. Owens better not pull any of that nonsense where he tries to strip the ball and ends up missing the tackle instead.
In fact, that goes for all of them.

falcon21, I don’t have that worried feeling that I had last week re the Cardinals.
I think of the second game in 2008 when the Tampa defense pretty much shut everything down. It was MR’s first taste of a really good NFL defense. MR was 13 of 33 for 158 yards, and sacked 4 times. He had two interceptions. MT had 42 yards on 14 carries. It’s the only time I remember the Falcons with MR so dominated. The score was 24-9 with 3 Falcons field goals.
I think he will come ready to play on Sunday. The team should have a good game in Tampa. I’m saying 31-14.

He was the one that bit. He called out my man JJ and I bit him. I brought it in a manner that was both pointed and respectful. I ain’t the F’ee, I am theF’er.

Wings, I like what you are thinking. I do like that score. It is time to put 60 minutes together, O and D along with the ST’s.

Here’s a useless comment to help fill up the void before game time: Falcons’ away unis look sharper than their home unis.
