Atlanta Falcons: Give Your Bye Week Fixes

Falcons Must Get Better

QB Matt Ryan completed 34-of-52 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns, and led the team on a fourth-quarter drive that was capped by Michael Turner's 13-yard TD run.

Can the OL EVER Get it Together (Evan Vucci)

Even though it’s technically game week as the Falcons prepare to face the hated Philadelphia Eagles, the Birds are coming off their bye week and, even though they’re 6-0, they better get some things fixed and fast if they want to stay that way. If the the bye week had come after the San Diego game, everyone’s confidence would be really high, but after 3 straight weeks of lackluster performances that needed a last minute comeback, most Falcons fans have to be one of the least confident of any 6-0 team in NFL history. So as our Atlanta Falcons get ready for the enormous game in Philly, give your fixes the Falcons must make………..

Improve the OL By Any Means Necessary

Newsflash: The Atlanta Falcons have a problem with their offensive line! It’s impossible to fathom that the Birds have issues with their offensive line, but they do. In all seriousness, this has been an issue, basically forever. Fans and the media elite alike have been harping and carping on this area for years, but especially this off-season. Some of the blame of course falls with Dimitroff for not bringing in quality offensive lineman, but he at least tried to correct the error a little by using his first two draft picks (2nd round on Peter Konz, 3rd round on Lamar Holmes) on offensive linemen. We’re not likely to see any changes after the bye week, at least in personnel due the Falcons being undefeated. But does that mean we shouldn’t?

After a disappointing end to the 2011 season, many were wondering how the Falcons will bounce back this season. Here's a game-by-game look at the season, including early scores and upcoming schedule.

Same OL Group as Last Year (AJC)

Maybe it’s that whole deal of “the backup quarterback is always everyone’s favorite player,” but how many times can you continue to trot out the same lineup and expect different results? Perhaps the coaching staff feels as though the musical chairs rotation at right guard and left tackle last year led to inconsistency and ultimately poor play. Despite some decent performances to start the year, the OL continues to be the Falcons Achilles Heel. If the Falcons don’t get it fixed, fans are expecting some tough days ahead.

Tackling, Tackling, Tackling

ProFootballFocus came out with some stats the other day detailing how many tackles the Falcons defense is missing. It went on to say something to the effect that it would shatter any missed tackles record for the Falcons in the Mike Smith Era. The Falcons have been playing pretty good defense through the first 6 games, but they’re certainly showing some cracks, especially in the run and the fundamentals of tackling. One of the reasons the Falcons have been gashed by runs is the inability to bring their opponents down on first hit. They’re making some big hits, but not wrapping up. Nothing to be too concerned about, but something that should be cleaned up during the bye week.

Break the Offensive Slump

After the first three weeks, the Atlanta Falcons offense was seeming to finally become the juggernaut that so many had expected for so long. Matt Ryan was being tossed in the MVP conversation and the offense could do little wrong. Everyone was getting the ball and the offense was rolling along. Then the Falcons played the Panthers and it slowed down a touch, where they bogged down plenty of times in the game. They went on the road against the Redskins and had issues pretty much the entire game until the 4th quarter, when they had to get it done. The the offensive collapse happened against the lowly Raiders. After sweeping the problems under the rug, it became impossible to do so against Oakland at home. Hitting the offensive wall reminded so many fans of the previous years where it could fall apart in a flash and seem completely inept. Poor blocking, bad reads and throws by Matt Ryan, tons of drops by the running backs and receivers, and a very weak running game pulled an explosive offense crashing back to reality. Maybe the no-huddle attack can help or quicker and better designed route combinations or even better run play-calls. Dirk Koetter, Matt Ryan, and Co. have to find a way, any way, to get back their mojo from the beginning of the season.

Mix It Up in the Backfield

Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner breaks away from Carolina Panthers safety Haruki Nakamura for a 60-yard touchdown reception and run and a 24-14 lead during the third quarter at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday , Sept. 30, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Time to Split the RB Load Up More? (AJC)

Michael Turner and the offensive line are the easy scapegoats for a really weak running game, but it’s more than just their faults. The Falcons have to dislodge their running game some way and somehow. Michael Turner shouldn’t necessarily be relegated to never playing, but fans sure would like to see Jacquizz Rodgers (in the right playcalls), Jason Snelling, and even speedster Antone Smith get some touches in the backfield. Much like the offensive line, when fans keep seeing the same old, same old, it gets frustrating the max degree. The OL hasn’t done a very good job blocking and creating holes, but the running backs (Turner in particular) don’t seem to be hitting the hole very hard. If other NFL teams can see rookie running back after rookie running back (sometimes undrafted) find success, can’t the Falcons coaches at least mix it up?

Help John Abraham Out for Goodness Sake

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Just like the offensive line woes, the failure to generate a good pass rush not named John Abraham is a problem yet again. Many thought that Abraham may have played his last down in Atlanta and be seeking a max contract to finish out his career. Luckily for the Falcons and all their fans, he decided to finish a Falcon. His play has not dropped a bit and is having a great year. Problem is, the Falcons continue to not give Abraham the help he needs. Sean Weatherspoon is second most with 3 sacks, Jonathan Babineaux has 2.5, Vance Walker has 2, and William Moore along with Kroy Biermann each have one a piece.

Those aren’t outright terrible numbers, and do go in line with Mike Nolan’s desire for a bunch of sacks from different players, but the Falcons don’t seem to have any players ready to pick up Abraham’s slack when he finally does start to taper off. Biermann seems better suited for linebacker, Ray Edwards is evidently starting to enter the B-word territory, Lawrence Sidbury is pulling his disappearing act again, and rookie Jonathan Massaquoi along with second year man Cliff Matthews are always on the inactive list. Regardless of who or where it comes from, the Falcons must find a way to help Abraham rush the passer.

Don’t Fear the No-Huddle

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White goes up for a long reception over Carolina Panthers safety Haruki Nakamura (center) and cornerback Josh Norman setting up the winning field goal for a 30-28 victory in the final minute of the game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday , Sept. 30, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Bet Roddy Likes the No-Huddle (AJC)

It’s understandable that most coaches don’t want to use the no-huddle attack as their main offensive base since it speeds up games, can increase the chances for errors and/or turnovers, and doesn’t give the defense hardly any time to catch their breath on the sideline. However, if it works and your quarterback thrives in it, why not? Ryan seems to operate best in the no-huddle attack, calling plays based on the defense, keeping the opposition on their heels, and most importantly, driving the ball down the field. Even the running game seems to flourish more in the no-huddle. Should the no-huddle attack only be used to unstick an offense that’s bogging down, instead of perhaps putting great pressure on the defense?

Improve the Run D

Akeem Dent has been many fans favorite player to pile on the first 6 weeks. The second year man out of Georgia has struggled taking hold of the middle linebacker spot vacated by Curtis Lofton. Every once and awhile he’s shown a few glimpses, but overall he’s had issues at MLB. He’s been over-running plays, missing tackles, getting blocked with ease, and had an overall tough time against the run and in coverage. The Oakland game wasn’t all his fault since he was being asked to play both MLB and outside linebacker with Stephen Nicholas being hurt. Dent is far from the only one to take blame. The defensive tackles have done well getting penetration, but they’ve had issues anchoring the line and keeping linebackers and the secondary clean from getting free-release blocks from the OL. As mentioned above, much of it is just tackling better. This is a big one to get fixed with the tough part of the schedule coming up.

Any Chance for New Faces?

While this likely is just hoping for something for hope’s sake, many fans would love to see some players get some chances on offense, defense, and special teams. Would it be that terrible to see Peter Konz or Lamar Holmes get some snaps on the OL? Kevin Cone has showed his game-breaking speed in pre-season, not to mention getting HD more involved. Then there’s running back with Snelling getting lost in the shuffle and and a backfield dying for speed not even giving speed merchant Antone Smith a chance.

September 17, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga.,: Atlanta Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud (28) is pushed out of bounds by Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker after DeCoud intercepted a pass by quarterback Peyton Manning in the first half of their game against the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome Monday night in Atlanta, Ga., September 17, 2012. The Falcons defense intercepted Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning three times in the first quarter. JASON GETZ / JGETZ@AJC.COM

Defense Needs that Early Year Spark (AJC)

On defense, Lawrence Sidbury’s speed is never used and rookie Jonathan Massaquoi along with Cliff Matthews never even make the active roster. Could rookie DT Travian Robertson help out in at defensive tackle, not to mention Vance Walker likely earning a starting spot over Peria Jerry so far in the season. Could they just try Kroy Biermann at linebacker to appease many of us Cage fans? Again, these players likely don’t hold the answers that fans are looking for, but it sure would be nice to see for ourselves instead of always thinking, “what if?”

Bird Cage Patriots Turn

1) Simple Quick Draw – what’s the biggest thing the Falcons need to fix?

2) Rank your list of areas that need fixing, highest priority to least?

3) Should the Falcons mess with the OL or give it a few more chances?

4) Can better tackling alone cure an ailing defense?

5) How best can Koetter, Ryan, and Co. break their offensive slump?

6) What kind of running back split would you like to see going forward?

7) Any new looks or players to help out Abe on the pass rush?

8.) How often should the Falcons use the no-huddle? Should it be a potential base offensive set?

9) What’s the best way the Birds can fix the run D?

10) Any personnel changes you would make to starting lineup in all 3 phases?

11) Should the Falcons give some new guys a chance? Which ones?

MB – i was wondering about the 40 watt club – I ran the Gumby’s pizza in 1988 to 1989 which was right near the 40 watt – we’d advertise in their club flyer.

MB – your history/singular event theory would hold water if every week we played with a completely NEW Falcons team against a completely NEW opponent. You just don’t perceive the reality of the Falcons. A team progresses or fails as it comes together – yes, it is a combination of incredible complexity – which is why winning a SB is a BIG thing. The Yankees should win the WS every year, provided they don’t suffer injuries – but, they don’t. IT is the great aspect of human competition – while I am attempting to get better, so are all my opponents. Some teams do it MUCH better than others. Since TD/MS/MR2 arrived, the Falcons now do it well. Ryan was an excellent selection.

There’s a 70% chance of rain on Sunday in Philly and it looks like it will be another rainy day same as when we played the Skins. I don’t know who has more of an advantage if we have to rely exclusively on the running game. I’d give the edge to Philly with LeSean being such a jitter bug and able to run, catch out of the backfield.

Not to sound negative, but I doubt we’ve fixed our running game completely during the bye. Turner just needs to turn into the trucker instead of the burner and start running people over.

40 Watt has moved around a few times over the years, it started as a dump, the name came from the one 40 watt lightbulb on the ceiling. Then it moved to Broad St, it hosted larger larger acts, I remember seeing a band called the Butthole Surfers there. I am not even sure if it exists today….

I have more recollection of original Uptown lounge than the 40W, it was around the corner from the Oddysy bar, which had pitchers of PBR, it was the most vile, fermented swill you could ever imagine, but they were like a buck fifty a pitcher, so we always started the night there and ended up at Uptown. The Ga Theater was a brew/movie house, but after I left, the Uptown lounge moved into there. I never saw a band play there.

MB – your history/singular event theory would hold water if every week we played with a completely NEW Falcons team against a completely NEW opponent….

No, I just think every game is a new game, remember Green bay in 2010? The same two teams played just a few weeks apart on the same field with very different results. .

In the NFL each team has the potential of playing very good, or very bad each week, the “better” team is not necessarily any more talented, or the teams with a better scheme, it is the team that is the most consistent and plays nearer its potential the most often, and at the most critical times.

On Vick, I do agree, disguise coverage, zone blitz, etc….My by point is, bring the pressure up the middle, not from the edges. You want to make him beat you from the pocket and force him to run backward to escape pressure. The DEs just have to keep the play in front while we collapse the middle.

Something’s been bugging me ever since E Manning won his last game in the last minute and became an instant Super Quarterback. MR has done that like 19 times and he never gets a word.
MR’s qbr for this year is 98.8 & EM’s is 92.5. MR’s five year qbr is 89.5 while EM’s nine year qbr is 82.8. I know MR got MVP for the first quarter, and he deserved it. EM’s makes one play and he’s the almighty of QB’s. I’m done, now I feel better.
Oh wait. I just found out EM was born in New Awleeens. Never mind.

Missed this one.

Atlanta Falcons linebacker Akeem Dent played every defensive snap in a Week 6 victory over the Oakland Raiders. It was the most Dent had played in any game since being drafted in 2011. He responded with eight tackles total, including six solo. His performance impressed his teammates. “That was my first time really getting to play with him a lot,” fellow linebacker Sean Weatherspoon told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It was fun. I look forward to seeing him continue to have a bigger role in our defense.” Dent’s increased playing time resulted from an ankle injury to Stephen Nicolas. It’s believed that Nicolas will resume his normal spot this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, so Dent may see his participation decrease again. One difference between the two players is that the Falcons don’t yet feel comfortable playing Dent full-time in nickel packages. Still, his performance against Oakland didn’t go unnoticed and likely bodes well for the future.

I love ow the ‘experts’ always point out on ESPN(biased ones) that the Falcon’s defense allows so many yards against them, yet they fail to point out the points allows per game, which is top 5 in the NFL. POINTS MATTER, NOT YARDS! Those stats are so overrated. Haters gonna hate.

My prediction is that we play well in the 1st quarter and take a 10-0 lead. Then the Eagles press back and make it 20-13. Then we get the ball with 4 miutes left and tie the game leaving Vick :45.

As he scrambles to get down field he gets pick-sixed by Samuel and we win 27-20.

We will have beaten an inspired Eagles team that played very well and it will be considered squeaking by.

All teams aren’t equal and I believe the divide is greater than you do. The Falcons have the higher talent level, but Reid is a much better coach (one caveat is that he seems burdened this year… I suspect his family).

the wild card to me is the new DC and Reid’s family issues. Does that galvinize the team or tear them apart?

SICK of all of these “experts” saying the Falcons have played a weak schedule. READ BETWEEN THE LINES (analyse…pretty sure the “experts” are PAYED to do this….)

-at Kansas – OK, that one actually was easy, but it’s a road opening game
-Denver – Monday night game too….go tell Peyton to his face that he’s an easy opponent
-at San Diego…Short week, PLUS West Coast trip, and same goes for Philip Rivers as for Peyton
-Carolina – Division game against a team that had 3 extra days rest (they had played on Thursday the previous week) Plus, the Falcons were coming back from the West Coast. Thanks NFL schedulers. (jerks)
-at Washington -RG3. Not easy. Seriously.
-Oakland- Against a team coming off of a bye week. Want to know what an extra weeks rest means in the NFL? A LOT. Of the four teams coming off byes that week, 2 won, and two were in games they had no business being in. Fresh legs mean tons.

To add fuel to the fire. The jackasses at the NFL scheduling office scheduled a game against Philly- in Philly, when they just had their bye week also. Thanks. Really. Thanks.

Somehow I think there’s a person in that office with a Saints cap hidden in their drawer.

Seriously, WHY hasn’t anyone taken this into consideration when talking about the Falcons’ schedule? Is it just too easy to write that the teams they’ve faced haven’t won a lot of games? No kidding, we’re undefeated, that means they took at least one hit to their schedule. Geez.

I think this is by far the toughest game on the Falcons schedule (NY also). They’re going to be lucky to win it. But it’s allright, not expecting them to go undefeated.

Offensive line is something that has to be improve over the next two drafts, not this season. I’m afraid we are going to have to dance with the girl we brought (no slight intended). As we continue to develop Konz and Holmes, I suspect they will be a big part of next years lineup. Koettner needs to continue to scheme an offense that works well with the line we have.

Tackling. Geez. I haven’t seen poorer tackling that I did in the Raiders game. It seems we were always taking the wrong angle and leaving our feet before the ball carrier was in reach. I remember specifically seeing #22 dive at a player from about 5 yards away and completely whiff. These guys need to remember that there are 11 guys on defense and if you wrap up, there will be another guy to clean up within a second or two. Don’t go for the knock out hit unless you are the second guy tackling, not the first. I was most disappointed with this phase of the game than any.

Having said all that – the Falcons are 6-0 and coming off of a restful bye, so I expect a great effort up in Philly this weekend. Make MV7 turn over the ball 3 or 4 times and we should be able to beat the Eagles.

Trademark – Fair assessment on the schedule. I don’t think the talent of KC, CAR, or OAK are anywhere near ours, but the circumstances could have a “leveling” affect. So, I’ll give some credance to that. One caveat is OAK. Even though they had a bye, they did fly from West Coast and play at 1:00PM. That’s usually a killer.

I was concerned when I saw that we don’t play any back to back home games… That’s gotta take a toll.

If we dominate Vick & the Eagles on Sunday, I’ll be a lot more relaxed the remainder of the season. However, you KNOW Vick will be up for the game and, if the rest of the team still supports him, they too should be up. However, if our offense can control the game tempo, we should roll. I’m still thinking 24-17. However, if we can rack up 21 first half points and keep Philly below a TD, I’d be pretty happy.

Coop, I guess that is it, we probably just gonna have to agree to disagree on talent levels. It just seems a new QB or a new coach can turn a team around on a dime. I think all teams are close enough in talent to where Chemistry is more a factor.

Did Roddy White become more talented with Ryan walked through the door? Who is to say Oakland does not have a receiver capable of putting up RW numbers with the right QB? Is Wes Welker the model of athletic talent?

matty – i think your comments on cooking/coaching is what we’ve been griping about on scheme – bad game planning. under the execution argument, using the exact same ingredients would occasionally fail due to the ingredients not operating as usual. However, if the cook does NOT utilize the ingredients property (say, too much yeast), then the meal could be ruined. IMHO, that is what happend in the 2nd GB playoff game (our coaching staff did not adapt to what they saw as GB tendencies in our win – which was actually helped out a lot by a rodgers fumble on the goal line) and the Giants game – we tried to run on the Giants – pretty dumb from an offensive stand point. We have the best quality ingredients. Sometimes the lazy cook does not utlize them properly.

actually, in NASCAR, it only appears these guys are running the same cars. different manufacturers produce different engines; and the crew chief if he is slick, can manipulate the car. If you get a good team they excel – Matt Kenseth with Jimmy Fennig – two Wisconsin guys – excel; when Kenseth had a guy named Drew Blickensderfer – Drew had LOUSY strategy and would not pit at the earliest window – thus frequently leaving Kenseth with a top 3 car coming in below 20th. I wrote 2 certified letters to Roush about it, and luckily he was terminated as Kenseth’s crew chief.

The reason why this argument falls short is because Roddy was posting 1,000 yard seasons before Ryan got here. I remember he posted a 1,000 yard receiving season with Joey Harrington at QB. And, I’d take it that Carson Palmer is more talented than Joey Harrington.

regarding Manning and elite status. Prior to last years SB heroics again, I had MR2 ranked higher than Eli – but, you can NOT argue with SB titles. Which is why Montana is the best in the business. I hated the Steelers, but Bradshaw got them to the promised land multiple times – and, he was a genuine QB as opposed to Flacco – who I think is just a bit above average. I still think MR2 is a top 10 QB. (top 30% in the league)

Blog monster got me the first time, so lets try this again. The reason why your argument falls short, at least IMO, is because Roddy White was posting 1,000 yard seasons before Ryan got here. Dude posted a 1,000 yard receiving season with Joey Harrington playing QB for the Falcons. And, I’d take it Carson Palmer is more talented than Joey Harrington, so why aren’t Raiders receivers posting RW84 numbers? Either the systems don’t allow it, which means we’re not all running the same systems, or the talent doesn’t allow them to…

blog monster’s gotten me twice in a row now.

MB, go re-read your 5:07 post, 2nd paragraph. If you really believe that, if you really believe that the only thing stopping receivers on other teams from posting RW84 type numbers are QB’s, than why was RW84 posting 1,000 yard seasons before Ryan got here? RW84 posted a 1,000 yard receiving season with Joey Harrington playing QB for the Falcons. I’d take it that Carson Palmer is more talented than Joey Harrington.
