Atlanta Falcons: Give Your Bye Week Fixes

Falcons Must Get Better

QB Matt Ryan completed 34-of-52 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns, and led the team on a fourth-quarter drive that was capped by Michael Turner's 13-yard TD run.

Can the OL EVER Get it Together (Evan Vucci)

Even though it’s technically game week as the Falcons prepare to face the hated Philadelphia Eagles, the Birds are coming off their bye week and, even though they’re 6-0, they better get some things fixed and fast if they want to stay that way. If the the bye week had come after the San Diego game, everyone’s confidence would be really high, but after 3 straight weeks of lackluster performances that needed a last minute comeback, most Falcons fans have to be one of the least confident of any 6-0 team in NFL history. So as our Atlanta Falcons get ready for the enormous game in Philly, give your fixes the Falcons must make………..

Improve the OL By Any Means Necessary

Newsflash: The Atlanta Falcons have a problem with their offensive line! It’s impossible to fathom that the Birds have issues with their offensive line, but they do. In all seriousness, this has been an issue, basically forever. Fans and the media elite alike have been harping and carping on this area for years, but especially this off-season. Some of the blame of course falls with Dimitroff for not bringing in quality offensive lineman, but he at least tried to correct the error a little by using his first two draft picks (2nd round on Peter Konz, 3rd round on Lamar Holmes) on offensive linemen. We’re not likely to see any changes after the bye week, at least in personnel due the Falcons being undefeated. But does that mean we shouldn’t?

After a disappointing end to the 2011 season, many were wondering how the Falcons will bounce back this season. Here's a game-by-game look at the season, including early scores and upcoming schedule.

Same OL Group as Last Year (AJC)

Maybe it’s that whole deal of “the backup quarterback is always everyone’s favorite player,” but how many times can you continue to trot out the same lineup and expect different results? Perhaps the coaching staff feels as though the musical chairs rotation at right guard and left tackle last year led to inconsistency and ultimately poor play. Despite some decent performances to start the year, the OL continues to be the Falcons Achilles Heel. If the Falcons don’t get it fixed, fans are expecting some tough days ahead.

Tackling, Tackling, Tackling

ProFootballFocus came out with some stats the other day detailing how many tackles the Falcons defense is missing. It went on to say something to the effect that it would shatter any missed tackles record for the Falcons in the Mike Smith Era. The Falcons have been playing pretty good defense through the first 6 games, but they’re certainly showing some cracks, especially in the run and the fundamentals of tackling. One of the reasons the Falcons have been gashed by runs is the inability to bring their opponents down on first hit. They’re making some big hits, but not wrapping up. Nothing to be too concerned about, but something that should be cleaned up during the bye week.

Break the Offensive Slump

After the first three weeks, the Atlanta Falcons offense was seeming to finally become the juggernaut that so many had expected for so long. Matt Ryan was being tossed in the MVP conversation and the offense could do little wrong. Everyone was getting the ball and the offense was rolling along. Then the Falcons played the Panthers and it slowed down a touch, where they bogged down plenty of times in the game. They went on the road against the Redskins and had issues pretty much the entire game until the 4th quarter, when they had to get it done. The the offensive collapse happened against the lowly Raiders. After sweeping the problems under the rug, it became impossible to do so against Oakland at home. Hitting the offensive wall reminded so many fans of the previous years where it could fall apart in a flash and seem completely inept. Poor blocking, bad reads and throws by Matt Ryan, tons of drops by the running backs and receivers, and a very weak running game pulled an explosive offense crashing back to reality. Maybe the no-huddle attack can help or quicker and better designed route combinations or even better run play-calls. Dirk Koetter, Matt Ryan, and Co. have to find a way, any way, to get back their mojo from the beginning of the season.

Mix It Up in the Backfield

Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner breaks away from Carolina Panthers safety Haruki Nakamura for a 60-yard touchdown reception and run and a 24-14 lead during the third quarter at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday , Sept. 30, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Time to Split the RB Load Up More? (AJC)

Michael Turner and the offensive line are the easy scapegoats for a really weak running game, but it’s more than just their faults. The Falcons have to dislodge their running game some way and somehow. Michael Turner shouldn’t necessarily be relegated to never playing, but fans sure would like to see Jacquizz Rodgers (in the right playcalls), Jason Snelling, and even speedster Antone Smith get some touches in the backfield. Much like the offensive line, when fans keep seeing the same old, same old, it gets frustrating the max degree. The OL hasn’t done a very good job blocking and creating holes, but the running backs (Turner in particular) don’t seem to be hitting the hole very hard. If other NFL teams can see rookie running back after rookie running back (sometimes undrafted) find success, can’t the Falcons coaches at least mix it up?

Help John Abraham Out for Goodness Sake

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Just like the offensive line woes, the failure to generate a good pass rush not named John Abraham is a problem yet again. Many thought that Abraham may have played his last down in Atlanta and be seeking a max contract to finish out his career. Luckily for the Falcons and all their fans, he decided to finish a Falcon. His play has not dropped a bit and is having a great year. Problem is, the Falcons continue to not give Abraham the help he needs. Sean Weatherspoon is second most with 3 sacks, Jonathan Babineaux has 2.5, Vance Walker has 2, and William Moore along with Kroy Biermann each have one a piece.

Those aren’t outright terrible numbers, and do go in line with Mike Nolan’s desire for a bunch of sacks from different players, but the Falcons don’t seem to have any players ready to pick up Abraham’s slack when he finally does start to taper off. Biermann seems better suited for linebacker, Ray Edwards is evidently starting to enter the B-word territory, Lawrence Sidbury is pulling his disappearing act again, and rookie Jonathan Massaquoi along with second year man Cliff Matthews are always on the inactive list. Regardless of who or where it comes from, the Falcons must find a way to help Abraham rush the passer.

Don’t Fear the No-Huddle

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White goes up for a long reception over Carolina Panthers safety Haruki Nakamura (center) and cornerback Josh Norman setting up the winning field goal for a 30-28 victory in the final minute of the game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday , Sept. 30, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Bet Roddy Likes the No-Huddle (AJC)

It’s understandable that most coaches don’t want to use the no-huddle attack as their main offensive base since it speeds up games, can increase the chances for errors and/or turnovers, and doesn’t give the defense hardly any time to catch their breath on the sideline. However, if it works and your quarterback thrives in it, why not? Ryan seems to operate best in the no-huddle attack, calling plays based on the defense, keeping the opposition on their heels, and most importantly, driving the ball down the field. Even the running game seems to flourish more in the no-huddle. Should the no-huddle attack only be used to unstick an offense that’s bogging down, instead of perhaps putting great pressure on the defense?

Improve the Run D

Akeem Dent has been many fans favorite player to pile on the first 6 weeks. The second year man out of Georgia has struggled taking hold of the middle linebacker spot vacated by Curtis Lofton. Every once and awhile he’s shown a few glimpses, but overall he’s had issues at MLB. He’s been over-running plays, missing tackles, getting blocked with ease, and had an overall tough time against the run and in coverage. The Oakland game wasn’t all his fault since he was being asked to play both MLB and outside linebacker with Stephen Nicholas being hurt. Dent is far from the only one to take blame. The defensive tackles have done well getting penetration, but they’ve had issues anchoring the line and keeping linebackers and the secondary clean from getting free-release blocks from the OL. As mentioned above, much of it is just tackling better. This is a big one to get fixed with the tough part of the schedule coming up.

Any Chance for New Faces?

While this likely is just hoping for something for hope’s sake, many fans would love to see some players get some chances on offense, defense, and special teams. Would it be that terrible to see Peter Konz or Lamar Holmes get some snaps on the OL? Kevin Cone has showed his game-breaking speed in pre-season, not to mention getting HD more involved. Then there’s running back with Snelling getting lost in the shuffle and and a backfield dying for speed not even giving speed merchant Antone Smith a chance.

September 17, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga.,: Atlanta Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud (28) is pushed out of bounds by Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker after DeCoud intercepted a pass by quarterback Peyton Manning in the first half of their game against the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome Monday night in Atlanta, Ga., September 17, 2012. The Falcons defense intercepted Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning three times in the first quarter. JASON GETZ / JGETZ@AJC.COM

Defense Needs that Early Year Spark (AJC)

On defense, Lawrence Sidbury’s speed is never used and rookie Jonathan Massaquoi along with Cliff Matthews never even make the active roster. Could rookie DT Travian Robertson help out in at defensive tackle, not to mention Vance Walker likely earning a starting spot over Peria Jerry so far in the season. Could they just try Kroy Biermann at linebacker to appease many of us Cage fans? Again, these players likely don’t hold the answers that fans are looking for, but it sure would be nice to see for ourselves instead of always thinking, “what if?”

Bird Cage Patriots Turn

1) Simple Quick Draw – what’s the biggest thing the Falcons need to fix?

2) Rank your list of areas that need fixing, highest priority to least?

3) Should the Falcons mess with the OL or give it a few more chances?

4) Can better tackling alone cure an ailing defense?

5) How best can Koetter, Ryan, and Co. break their offensive slump?

6) What kind of running back split would you like to see going forward?

7) Any new looks or players to help out Abe on the pass rush?

8.) How often should the Falcons use the no-huddle? Should it be a potential base offensive set?

9) What’s the best way the Birds can fix the run D?

10) Any personnel changes you would make to starting lineup in all 3 phases?

11) Should the Falcons give some new guys a chance? Which ones?

“Holmes for Hawley” – Why? Isn’t he supposed to be the heir apparent for Baker? Meaning he is a left tackle, and Baker isn’t the problem on the O-line. So Holmes is going to do what? This is not the time for inexperience and indecision at the right tackle and we have no indication that Holmes is in any way prepared for that job.

“Massaquoi for Sidbury” – Again, Why? He hasn’t shown that he is that much superior to Sidbury, and even Sid isn’t getting much time with Bierman, Edwards, and Abe getting most of the snaps. So how is the relatively untested Massaquoi going to be that much of an upgrade.

I get that the team hasn’t played up to the standard we might have hoped for. It would be lovely if we were getting 8 sacks per game, at least two from each DE, a couple from the interior DL, and some LB and Safety pressure. I also understand the natural temptation to want to shake things up to try to get to that point. But throwing untested guys into the fire on Sunday when the team is UNDEFEATED, just seems to be a bit of an over reaction. We had three decent games and three that were a bit sub-par in certain respects. That simply cannot be the criteria for all this blow up the chemistry, try some new guys, fire the OC, fanaticism that is creeping into the conversation. It’s like they get no credit for the three decent games (really four by the defense if you count the Washington game), and all we care about is the games they didn’t dominate the other team. That ain’t right.

Well, thus far – beyond the excellent record – 2012 is eerily similar to 2010. Going into the 2010 Philly Game, I was ready to lay some wood on those bleeping bleep eating EAgles. — @ Paddy – 3:37 pm

You hit the nail right on the head on why I’m nervous about Sunday.

If we apply the logic used by some to analyze the falcons to every other team, everyone will be one and done. Nobody is “playing up to potential”. Now, I know that Green Bay, the Saints, and NY will raise their level of play come December, and the playoffs. (assuming the Saints find a way to get in).

Will we? I hope so, but raising our level of play today does not mean we will in December, we are just going to have to wait until December/January to find out. This is a marathon, and the regular season is about surviving.

We are in good shape, and the fact that we have not come apart by the seems after our playoff experiences the past few years shows good coaching. Will we collapse again? We won’t know until we get there.

DHunt — The point was not necessarily that they should start over anyone, but that MB asked who they should become active over and thus make inactive. We’ll just have to agree to disagree on the playing / development issue. I’ve seen Sidbury show serious pass-rushing flashes, as I did Massaquoi in pre-season only to never see them again. Sure, it could have been only pre-season or playing against lesser competition or whatever, but I’ve always felt that there is somewhat of a development problem with this team. Hey, maybe I’m way off base, but despite a few high draft picks, I don’t feel we get everything out of players that we can. Antone Smith has speed and I’ve seen as such, but even though we have a backfield in desperate need of speed, we never see him. A few years ago, we saw that great run by Gartrell Johnson (I think) on a quick toss only to never see him again. Look, I admit that a lot of this is nitpicking, but when some issues continue to be issues over a 5 year period with little to no change (offensive line, lack of speed threat @ RB, lack of pass rush, etc) in production. Honestly, I still think that having Konz and Holmes both in our starting OL would at least be better in terms of pass blocking and couldn’t be a whole lot worse in run blocking. To be frank, I’m tired of having these OL issues every year and worrying about who’s going to play where and all of that mess. I advocated to go ahead and rip the band-aid off, take the needed lumps on the OL, but it would better for it in the long run instead of having this same exact issue every single year. JMHO.

DHunt – you make a good point that we should not over react. However, I want to clarify that I’m not nervous because we played a 3 games that were a bit sbu-par. We stunk it up against Carolina and Oakland. It literally took two miracles to beat the Panhers and a near miracl (long FG at least) to beat the Raiders. To me, those are signs that there are some issues that against better opponents may end in losses. that’s worth a minor shakeup here or there.

You know, I can’t say that Konz or any other player would be an improvement or not. But as a fan, I agree I would like to see what they can do. But, I am not there in the classroom, breaking down tape or practice, etc. I just have to assume that if any of these guys were showing potential, that our coaches, even MR2 would mention to CS, and I don’t think CS is just dismiss it. Every play HD is out there, MR2 can target him, or audible, but he does not. Why?

I also agree Konz should win playing time, the tackle, he is very raw, I would be hesitant to put him out there. It is one thing to get beat physically and let your guy get a hand on the QB, but blowing an assignment is what gets QBs hurt.

Sure, we want to “reach our potential”, but there are teams just as talented who are also trying to reach theirs. Really, bad teams don’t win at the end. Carolina is 1-5, but “could be be 4-2 just as easily as we can. was it random? Hell no, it is about coaching and being able to orgainze and work the clock late…having a good kicker help too. But you cannot judge NFL teams talent by their WL record.

Paddy, ain’t that the truth. I know 4-12 teams can easily be 10-6 with handful of “swing plays” by analyzing the Falcons season between 1974 and 2007. Good teams find a way to win, bad teams find a way to lose.

Caroline TRIED to lose that game…Cam fumbles TWICE in the 4th quarter, it was our horrible luck that we did not recover. The when Carolina gets LUCKY again and puts the ball on the 1 foot line, WE STILL find a way to win. Luck, my azz.

Isn’t it optimistic to discuss how you can get better and still be 6-0. Wouldn’t trade our issues for any one else’s. Every team in the leagues works to get better each week. You can go from under-achieving bums to Super Bowl Contenders again like the Packers or from Super Bowl favorites to playoffs maybe like the Ravens. Just keep making plays to win games!

The game Sunday will certainly be a great test for the Falcons. Being the last undefeated team at almost midway through the season is enough. Playing a desparate Philly team on the road against a coach and QB under the microscope, a new defensive coordinator, a team that we’ve stuggled against over the years, and a coach that is 13-0 after a bye…ouch! Daunting task for sure. We’ll see early in the game if this Falcons team has a new mindset and can perform in a big game. Start fast, get the Philly crowd to turn on the home team and you got a chance.

(And please A. Samuel, don’t try to overdo it on Sunday, jump too many routes and get burned for long plays. Not trying to take away your agressive play, but you know he’d love to get a pick or two against his old team and the Eagles will certainly try to attack him.)

I hope it works as well for the Falcons as it appears to have helped the Pack.

If you are going talk about the O-line, you should correctly identify the problem. Baker hasn’t been a stud LT this season but, he’s been better than most of the rest of the Falcons O-line. Clabo(who should have been a probowler IMO last year) is getting destroyed in space. Konz didn’t beat McClure, didn’t beat out Reynolds, neither of whom I hold in very high regard at this point. Still, the O-line has held its own against some good teams, they just don’t push the LOS well enough IMO.
Tackling has been a real achilles for the Falcons, no argument there but, I don’t think Dent should bear the responsibility solely. A lot of the issue against the run is again the LOS. Jerry played well in preseason and I thought he may develop but, he hasn’t shown much during the season. I don’t think its his fault necessarily, he’s just not 1/0 DT. He’s a 3, just like Babs, just like Walker. Peters was the closest the Falcons had to 1 and he is a hybrid IMO. Losing Grimes hurts some too, The Falcons don’t really have the corners to play the press man the way it would normally be played. I like the McClain kid, I think he is going to be solid.

Perception is amazing…fans, media want to discount the Falcons 6-0 start by saying the last 3 close calls againts subpar teams causes concern. Let’s dig deeper…

vs. Carolina….they were coming off an embarassing loss vs. the Giants. Had a few extra days to prepare for a division opponent. Both games last year came down to the 4th quarter. Panthers played their best game of the season and the Falcons found a way to win.

@ Washington…were coming off a big win @ Tampa. Rainy DC. Trying to snap a 8-game home losing streak. Knocked RG3 out of the game. Made plays in the 4th quarter to win

vs. Oakland….a team coming off a bye, had two weeks to prepare. Player their best defensive game of the season. Picked off Ryan 3 times. Falcons found a way to win.

There are no gimmies in the NFL!! Just play, and win!

LA, correct, they say “Falcons should be 4-2 if….Then using the same “what if” logic, the Panthers should be 4-2 also. So if records are not indicative of “how good” a team really is, how can you say “how bad” a team is?

Or are all teams with winning records just “lucky”….To some extent they are, the 1998 falcons can be said to be lucky. Any team implodes after success can be said to be lucky, a fluke….But teams that win year after year are not lucky, that is a winning franchise. Be grateful that we have one.

If he insist on doing that. Can’t he do it without the Falcon logo sitting right behind him. It’s f**king disrespectful. It’s disrespectful to the Falcon players and the Falcon organization. Why is it, that the most mediocre former players, think they are such experts on what every team and every player should be doing. On the other hand. From what I saw last week the Falcons are not the only team to be looking not at there best against some of the same teams the Falcons have faced .

The Giants had a hard time against the Skins and Dallas did not shut out the the Panthers . I know the Giants beat the crap out of the Panthers But the same could be said about the Falcons chiefs game

I agree the Birds need some help on the OL and I hope they do something about it here on there bye. They need a lot of work with drops and the run game also . As I said I hope they have worked on these things.

A lot out there. say this week is there toughest task so far I just don;t know about that but They do have a big game this week and I think it was one of the 3 games I had them lose this year . I do hope I am wrong tho on this one .

MB, you’re right, if we did apply the same logic to the other teams, it would seem that most fanbases would be arriving at the same fear that some of us are, that this is a ‘one and done’ type team.

The difference though is, teams like the Giants, Packers, Patriots, Ravens, etc. all have proven track records of turning it up a notch or playing well in the playoffs whereas we haven’t established that *yet*. I understand we won’t be able to rid ourselves of our playoff debacle reputation until the playoffs come, and nothing we do in the regular season will really ever lead to playoff wins. But, playing well through the regular season and overcoming potential flaws that kill you in playoff football will help to alleviate some of the worries that fans have.

Real quick though. Some of you guys are diggin’ way too deep into this.

Nobody is saying we ’should’ve lost’. But, we put ourselves in positions to lose games against bad teams. That’s it. Those games were projected to be blowouts. I’ve said over and over, the Panthers game, whatever, it’s a division rival so I’m happy we just came away with the win. Even the Redskins game, it’s fine. The Raiders game shouldn’t have been anywhere near as close as it was. If a bad team like the Raiders can disrupt our protection and our offense in general to the extent they did, does at bode well for our team? Does that sit well with you guys?

It should’ve been a blowout. Great teams don’t let lesser teams hang around consistently the way we have. Sure, there’s parity, and every now and then, you’ll have a bad team stick around and even beat a team that they technically shouldn’t have an opportunity to beat. But, it shouldn’t happen week after week after week. 3 weeks running.

Way too many of ya’ll sharing D3’s “uneasiness”, to be kind. The link that MB posted went on to say how, after the Pack allowed eight sacks, they went back to basics and the very same OL allowed Rogers to throw six touchdowns the next game! When MS announced his evaluation of the team during the bye week he surmised that we need to get back to and practice ALL of the basics of football. It has been said in this cage that, as far as replacing players, that MS & Co see the film and are there everyday in practice to see our players up close. I agree that this is the time to have faith in our team and look forward to a good Eagle feast. We won’t know any better until after this game and we may then be worrying about being 7-0. JB, my loyalty to the team has never changed, it will always be there. Yep we are 6 and 0 but it is not a pretty 6 and 0. There is plenty of room for improvement. The o-line has been a problem for years,I just hope Matt Ryan survives it. Other than Abe on the d-line we cannot get pressure on the QB without blitzing. I love this team but we do have things to fix and try to get into top form before the playoffs. I’m not attacking your post in anyway, just speaking as a concerned fan.

I read the ALL CAPS VERSIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
