Thank Goodness for Abe (AJC)
The Atlanta Falcons are the only undefeated team in the NFL, so why do fans feel so nervous or unfulfilled? After roaring out of the gates to a 3-0 start and looking excellent in all phases of the game, the Birds have come back to Earth a bit and looking pedestrian in all areas of the game, especially on offense. On one hand, the team is showing mettle, heart, and determination in finding ways to win, even if very ugly. However, if it continues for several weeks, a disturbing trend begins to take shape and what once was a strength starts to become a weakness because the team is putting itself in positions to have to win at the last minute due to the overall poor play. The fact is that the Falcons are 6-0, even though they’ve not looked very good lately. But isn’t getting a win, however you attain it, better than losing? Many teams thought to be “dominant” by the media elite talking heads have suffered losses to teams believed to be at the bottom. That speaks to NFL’s parity and winning the first 6 games, however it’s done, is a testament to the Falcons, their coaches, and their players. Whether or not it will serve to benefit or harm in the future is yet to be determined, but the reality is that the Falcons are undefeated and 31 other teams are not. A look at the Raiders game……….
At first, it was a great strength showing determination, mettle, and finding a way to win at the last second. The Falcons didn’t play great against an inspired Panthers team coming off a bye week. They willed themselves to a win with less than a minute. Then came a Redskins game that was filled with major mistakes, slogging around, until they finally put together a TD drive and subsequent defensive stand to win the game. OK, it’s on the road and the Redskins have shown a lot of promise. A third week in a row of not playing good is a disturbing trend and is now becoming a weakness. Fact is, the Falcons are putting themselves in these situations where they must scratch and claw from behind to win the game. No other series identifies it better: Asante Samuel makes a beautiful pick six to seemingly put the game away. Then the Raiders offense commences to go right down the field to score with two minutes and not needing any of their 3 timeouts. Once a great strength of character and will is simply becoming a product a weak and sloppy play.
This is About Right (AJC)
Let’s all hope it was just one of those days because it was a really bad one. Ryan threw 3 interceptions (all weren’t necessarily his fault), but some were. He seemed to have happy feet due to poor offensive line play. Not all was on him, but he had plenty of bad throws and misfires all on his own. He missed open receivers, threw the ball high, and generally had an awful day all around. Maybe it was just a bad day against a well-schemed defense. Perhaps the play-calling didn’t help any. The lack of running game surely isn’t helping and neither are the drops. Ryan’s had an excellent year to date, but he needs a game like he had vs. San Diego to erase the Raiders performance.
Thank goodness the Falcons found a way to keep John Abraham. The guy is a complete stud and is warming up his Ring of Honor flag as we speak. We as fans always mention Tony Gonzalez when discussing a Falcon that defies age. But Abraham deserves that praise too. He turned 34 this year and many (including this author) wondered how much he had left in the tank. Well, he’s proving once and for all just how awesome he is and by default how anemic our pass rush is without him. He notched 3 sacks, forced a fumble at a crucial time, and got several holding calls against him. In short, he was unblockable. Already, he has 6 sacks in 6 games. Abraham is the man.
No, it wasn’t the worst performance of the year (that would be Carolina with 7 sacks in one game), but this offensive line is causing heartburn for Falcons fans looking forward on the schedule when they play really good defensive lines. They weren’t outright terrible in pass blocking in the beginning of the season, but now they’re looking as bad as last year. And run blocking is another nightmare altogether. But really, how much should have been expected with the EXACT SAME starting offensive line as last year?
Baker is a little better, but not dominant. Blalock is the only rock on the team. Todd McClure is on the downside of 35. Garrett Reynolds is only slightly better than last year and that’s saying very little and many think he would be better at his natural position of tackle anyway. And then there’s Tyson Clabo. He has had an absolutely atrocious year. They’re just not getting it done and it shows. Sure, Michael Turner and the running backs aren’t making plays and the play-calling seems mediocre at best recently, but this is what most fans expected when literally no changes were made. Thomas Dimitroff deserves some criticism for the past of the this line, but he used his first two picks (2nd on Peter Konz, 3rd on Lamar Holmes) on offensive linemen. Why not try these guys out for a few series and see what happens? Why not mix it up some and move some of these guys around? Is one of the best overall linemen in the entire draft (Konz) really not good enough to start somewhere on this offensive line? Of all the issues that’s most maddening fans: Mike Smith and the coaching staff’s refusal to try anything different regarding the offensive line two years running.
This may just be an excuse in trying to make up reasons why the offense has been doing so poorly, but here goes: the Falcons need more speed in the backfield. It’s been well documented here in The Cage about Michael Turner and his slowing down or not fitting in this new offense among many other things. The Falcons coaching staff decided to go with Turner as their feature back this year and, even though a few times he’s done OK, mostly he’s looked completely out of sorts with this new offense. Gone are the days of one of the best lead blocking (and highest paid) fullbacks in the league clearing holes, the days of a power-run first offense, and offensive line opening “garage-sized holes” as Cage member SOMEBODY said. The best running backs in the league simply slow down as they approach 30 years old and especially with Turner having so many carries in such a short amount of time.
Running Game is Anemic (AJC)
The issues go beyond Turner, however. Jacquizz Rodgers was thought to be somewhat of an answer and may even contend for close to 40-50% of Turner’s touches, but that surely has not been the case. Maybe it’s play-calling or just lack of playing time, but Rodgers has not turned into the player many fans expected. On the 3rd and 1 toss play to Rodgers, he had room to get the first down, but was easily caught and dropped for a loss. Even his specialty of catching the ball in space had issues when he bobbled a well-timed screen that could have gone for many yards. The odd man out has definitely been Jason Snelling. Many ream the call to give Snelling the ball on 3rd and short, but many times he tends to run just as hard as Turner and does a better job of hitting the hole. The cold truth is that the Falcon simply don’t have speed at running back and haven’t for quite some time. Antone Smith has shown some serious speed in pre-season only to never get touches in a game. What could it hurt? Look no further than Alfred Morris of the Redskins and Andre Brown of the Giants (filling in for Ahmad Bradshaw) tearing it up this year alone. Like the OL issue, that’s a major thorn for fans as well, a refusal to mix it up and give some guys a few chances. From where it stands now, running back surely could be a candidate for a 1st or 2nd round pick in 2013.
Peria Jerry, Jonathan Babineaux, and Vance Walker have done a good job getting penetration in the backfield so far this season. Thought to be a possible weakness, they’ve done an admirable job overall. But they sure could use a boost, especially in the run game from a guy by the name of Corey Peters. Believed to be the best overall defensive tackle for the Falcons by many fans, Peters has been out the entire season going all the way back to training camp. He may not be ready for the Eagles game, but getting him back on a defense that could tighten up will be a nice shot in the arm.
Not having Stephen Nicholas at full strength really has shown just how fragile the Falcons linebacking corps is. Akeem Dent and Mike Peterson were on the field at the same time many times throughout the game, with Dent playing the entire game. Dent occasionally shows some promise as a very young player in the run game, but he’s just as lost as Curtis Lofton was in pass coverage. As the season wears on, the decision to not sign a linebacker for backup purposes may end up biting the Birds at some point.
Happening Much Less than it Used to (AJC)
Is it the anemic run game? Is it the offensive line? Is Matt Ryan simply coming off his hot start? Are defenses figuring out what the Falcons want to do? Is it just execution, or is it bad play-calling? Who knows exactly why the Falcons have continued to devolve on offense the last three weeks, but this much is certain: it definitely has. The Falcons looked unstoppable against a pretty good San Diego defense, but has hit a wall of sorts since. They left many points on the board vs. Carolina and gave up 7 sacks. They played 3 quarters of weak offensive football in DC before finally getting it together. And they looked as bad as they ever have against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Whatever the reason, the coaching staff and offense better get some things figured out before a tough part of the schedule starts coming up.
This is nothing new and it has nothing to do with that spectacular off-the-helmet catch he made on the ground, but Harry Douglas should get not only more snaps on offense, but more touches as well. The idea is that it’s impossible to cover all of the Falcons aerial weapons, but despite only a few occurrences, Douglas just doesn’t get that many looks. Either that or Dirk Koetter doesn’t know how to use him correctly. Seemingly, it would be a coordinators dream to have such an explosive slot man (and to his credit, he’s giving him more looks than Mularkey did), but he never seems to get chances to do what he does best which is to catch and run in space. Perhaps this is more of a critique on formations (3 receiver, 1 TE, single back) sets than anything else, but if you’re going to be an explosive passing team, you have to maximize all your weapons and the slot doesn’t seem to be getting enough snaps or targets. No disrespect intended, but do we really want to see Mike Johnson / Joe Hawley as a 3rd TE, Lousaka Polite, or Tommy Gallarda get on the field instead of HD?
This is really more about going forward than this year, but Sunday’s game brought to light just how bare the tight end cupboard will be when Gonzalez does finally hang up his cleats. Michael Palmer is hurt and there’s a belief that he can at least bridge a gap until a new tight end is developed, but after that, there’s not much. Tommy Gallarda is about exactly what he was coming out of college: an undrafted free agent. And this is really more on Dimitroff than anyone. He’s not invested any consequential draft picks on tight ends since 2008. In fact, the only tight end he’s ever drafted was Keith Zinger in the 7th round. Palmer may can get it done, but the position as a whole looks to be getting a huge hit when Gonzalez leaves.
Bryant Makes Another Late Save (AJC)
As mentioned above, thank goodness for John Abraham, because without him, the Falcons wouldn’t have much of any pass rush from the DE spot. As with tight end, the Falcons have failed to develop any significant production or player from the defensive end spot not named John Abraham. This is year 5 of the Mike Smith / Thomas Dimitroff regime and despite all the supposed talent at DE, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of promise. Ray Edwards appears to be looking more and more like a weak free agent move (as many fans, including this author admit through gritted teeth). Kroy Biermann should move permanently to linebacker, his natural position, most fans believe and is too light to make an impact at DE. Then there’s Lawrence Sidbury who some thought may see an increased role under Mike Nolan, only to continue his disappearing act in 2012. Jonathan Massaquoi and Cliff Matthews may hold some talent, but they’re always ending up on the inactive list every Sunday. The Falcons signed Abraham to a 3 year contract, so theoretically they have a few more years, but they’ve already had 5.
Here in The Cage, it appears to be pretty evenly split among fans and their beliefs / opinions. Some feel that the NFL is the most parity-driven sport in the entire world and that “Any Given Sunday” is a true reality in that each win is special in the National Football League. Hard to argue when you see teams like the Patriots, Packers, 49ers, and Steelers losing games many think they shouldn’t. The Falcons may not be flawless, but they’re finding ways to win and are, so far, the only undefeated team in the NFL. It’s hard to argue against that belief.
On the other hand, fans rightly point to similarities to 2010 when the Falcons were “finding ways to win” as they are now, while not playing great football, went 13-3, and got downright embarrassed in the Debacle in the Dome. In other words, not only losing in back-to-back playoff appearances, but getting blown out and humiliated has corroded the idea of “getting the benefit of the doubt.” There’s nothing the Falcons can do about the postseason right now but win and get there, but those 2010 Falcons seemed to be getting worse as the postseason approached, not better. It’s also hard to argue that point as well.
1) Simple Kickoff – where’s your confidence level after week 6?
2) Are the come-from-behind wins still a strength or are they now a weakness?
3) What was up with Matt Ryan’s bad day: one awful game or disturbing trend?
4) Is John Abraham nearing potential Ring of Honor status soon? Can he keep up this pace all season?
5) Is the Falcons offensive line finally due for a shakeup? What would your starting 5 be at Philly?
6) What should the Birds do @ RB? Is more speed desperately needed?
7) What’s your thoughts on the DT play?
8.) Are the LB issues keeping you up at night? Thoughts on Dent?
9) It’s an impossible question, but why is the offense digressing so bad?
10) Should Harry Douglas or others get more touches?
11) What should the Falcons do about TE after Gonzalez retires?
12) What is the deal with the Falcons failure to develop ANY OTHER defensive end?
13) What side do you fall on: happy to 6-0 and plenty of time to correct problems or seriously worried about what the future holds?

100K miles and the wheel hasn’t fallen off. Why should I worry about what happens? Nothing you see could possibly foreshadow future events. All games are random acts of completely equal talent where coaching is perfect and simple execution (not luck) by world class players is all that determines a winner.
I don’t know why I’m even driving this old truck. I know exactly what will happen… OR do I?

Wow, panthers are imploding, cam crying about losing games at the end. Really, he fumbled twice in the 4th quarter against us. And with 40 seconds to go today, he threw a bad bomb that he was lucky was not intercepted, then he gets sacked…..,.Sorry Cam, being able to work the clock with a minute left is what the NFL is all about. What a freaking crybaby, I called it that he would not last the season, I might be right.

It all depends on how an indivual interpets that and what it means to you. We all have different opinions and. as a rule, we don’t speak down to folks who might have a different opinion than yours.

It was interesting watching all the games, every team has huge issues and make lame play calls…the Giants called a back shoulder fade on 3rd and 1 to seal the game, needless to say, it was incomplete, they had to punt, and Washington came back an tool the lead, then Eli had to pull it out…. If we did that, you some people would be having heart attacks.
it appears the single most important quality a team must have is the ability to work the clock and pull the W off at the end. Personally, I like our chances and am not afraid to take my stand. I believe, if you don’t that is fine, just step up. And yes, I think the team that executes the best usually wins, and coaching has more to do with how a team executes than just about anything else. And yes, all teams have top tier talent, they all have guys running 4.4 40s and 300 pound freak athletes.

Cam does not know how to pull out a W in a close game. He can’t direct a 2 minute offense, he don’t know what to do. He will NEVER win consistently in the NFL until he does.

But really, the national media rips this team, if you are a fan, why do you? Sure they have all sorts of issues, who the hell does not? If is the state of the NFL today. Sure, Konz is cleaning everyone clock in practice, but Smitty does not put him in because he is an old dottering fool who just get lucky late in game. But, if Smitty does not play rookies, why does he play Ryan, JJ, Spoon, Baker, etc etc?
Plus, I am pretty sure Hill has some influence who plays, but no, I am sure Smitty says he has to play who he does…..

Matty B,
It’s obvious that we beg to differ. IMO, when a guy on the O-Line is getting beat up the way Clabo is, regardless of record, I’m contemplating changing things up if it means a protection boost on the line. If I feel Konz would provide this line a boost, I’m making the change, despite a 6-0 record.
You take my comments as ‘complaining’, when really, I’m simply pointing out an obvious flaw. How many games this year has Clabo been responsible for a sack?
You obviously saw us do no wrong in our squeaker against the Raiders. I don’t. Yeah we won, and that’s obviously all you care for. I want to see us play well. We haven’t been playing as well as we could.

Well, maybe my lols are a defense mechanism for the utter disappointment this franchise has wrought. I just learned to be laid back about it, because I personally think the journey is what I like, if I can’t be happy and laugh about it, why do it? If I let it tear me up, I would have to stop watching.
I guess we all deal with is differently. But I am not going to let my past disappointments let me stop believing in a team and staff that has show it can win consistently. Anyway, no offense intended. I think we are all good folks here, but I do get tired of the negativity over the same issues over and over again, just trying to being levity.

You see MB, you take the ’slightest bit of criticism’ as ‘ripping the team’…
We’re not ‘ripping the team’. We’re pointing out obvious flaws. Pointing out the suspect line, or suspect run defense, or suspect playcalling doesn’t mean you’re ‘ripping the team’. Gauging how good this team is based on how we’ve played as opposed to our record doesn’t mean you’re ripping the team. We’re simply debating how this team would stack up when up against an oponent whose a bit more formidable than the 2-win Raiders and the 1-win Panthers. The 3 opponents we’ve played in the past 3 weeks are all currently teams under .500. But, we’ve won all three of those games by less than a score. We squeaked by in all 3 games. I told you, I’m ok with the Redskins game. Even the Panthers game, fine, whatever. But, there’s no way to spin how p!ss poor this team played against the Raiders. Giving up almost 500 yards of offense doesn’t sit well with me, especially playing against the Raiders. The O-Line getting pushed around, Ryan tossing 3 INT’s, all of that don’t sit well with me.
That ain’t rippin’ the team. That’s fair criticism.

I guess Wabe, I don’t know why Konz is not playing. I have to assume he just has not stood out when given the opportunity. Is it a Smitty thing? How about Pat Hill? How about Ice? Don’t you think they would have some input? Hell, it might be Ice who is telling smitty to keep this lineup because Konz is not picking up the calls. Point is, we just DON’T KNOW…..Maybe we will see a chance now that we had a few weeks to work on it.

Not sure why I chose to jump back into this conversation. This is a never ending conversation really. It’s not just you MB, it’s been something that’s been ongoing for years now here. Again, I remember folks like myself and Coop taking a lot of heat in our 13-3 season for pointing out flaws, even after wins, from fans such as yourself who don’t want to hear about that when things are going great (record wise). We’re winning games, who cares how we look doing it, right? That’s where we differ.
You see, you’re right, ‘good teams’ find ways to win the way we’ve been winning. ‘Great teams’ don’t find themselves in the type of situations we’ve found ourselves in the past 2-3 weeks against the NFL’s bottom feeders. I simply want to see this team be ‘great’. Yeah, they’re good. They’ve been good. But, if they ever want to take that leap and taste ‘greatness’, they’ve can’t let teams like the Raiders stick around the way they did. They have to put teams like that away, especially at home.

Again Wabe, if I saw a team in the NFL dominating, even on one side of the ball, I would be inclined to see agree that we need to, or even can fix all our problems. But problems and squeeker wins is that the NFL had become with parity. Winning late is the most important thing a team can do. Cock mismanagement, poor QB play, confused players, I saw it all at crunch time today, but it is were we excel.
Ryan tossing 3 INT’s, all of that don’t sit well with me….Nor does it with him. Eli tossed a few today too, and the giants made a hideous call in 3rd and1 to seal the game.
but Eli make the play in crunch time, so they get the W, and that IS all that really matters.

I do agree, we are good, not great, but the as much as we would like to prove our greatness in the regular season, it is impossible Will we elevate come playoffs? Gonna have to wait for the playoffs to see, as much as we would like to see a “sign”, they mean nothing. We can’t exercise the demons until playoff time…..if we even make it.

Well, he’s certainly adequate when healthy as we’ve seen. Hasn’t given up a sack yet, that I know of. Well, maybe one, but not like he was doing last season.

certain over hyped players are a management worst nightmare. I remember a certain father of a coach, who was a coach himself, state that Mike Vick was a coach killer. Vick is now working on what? Coach #3? Is Cam Newton another coach killer? Vince Young got Jeff Fisher canned in Tenn. Gotta be careful with over hyped super athletes with more athetic ability than football savvy. If we go at least 2-2 the next 4 games, we would be doing OK.

You see all the love Eli is getting for being Mr Clutch? While Ice gets dissed for being “lucky”, and how we “under perform”. I guess winning SBs will do that for you, but it also took Eli 8 years, at the 4 year mark, he definitely did not feel the love.
“MB just can’t help himself”..I guess not.
Funny, saw an article on SI about parity that talked about what would have to happen for every team to go 8-8 from here on out. For Atlanta, it said we would have to let the demons of the 13-3 season, and playoff collapses undermine our confidence. I agree, gotta put that stuff in the past.

So how did the NFL pan out this week? And how does it relate to the Falcons?
Steelers barely edge Bengals. Bengals had been touted as perhaps the team to beat in the AFC North, but do they really have any offense outside of AJ Green?
Big Ray has already made the comment that no matter what the Raiders do it doesn’t help the perception of the Falcons.
Patriots squeak out a win against the Jets. Are the Jets better than people thought, even with all their injuries and dysfunction? Or are the Pats on the decline, even as they talking heads try to convince the world that Tom Brady is still one of the best in the biz?
Titans over Bills, in another race to the bottom game, at least Chris Johnson put up some FFL numbers for me in one league (while sinking my ship in another… sigh…)
Colts top Browns, and now all of a sudden Luck is a spectacular athletic talent and potential rookie of the year? Really??
Pack sacks Rams. I never really believed the Rams were that good, and the Pack is still stacked with talent and a great offensive scheme. Their defense showed up a bit more today, but still gave up 20.
Vikings dump Cardinals. Cards were in the “best team” discussion last week weren’t they. Vikes were beat up by Skins last week weren’t they? How do you power rank teams when things like this happen every single week? Oh… that’s right… It’s a popularity contest anyway.
Refs give a game to Giants over the Redskins. The Giants were supposed to be the most complete team in the NFC right? Their defense makes Atlanta look pathetic right? But they didn’t run all over us like the did the Giants. If not for that phantom leg whip call when the Skins were about to blow it wide open in the 3rd quarter, the Giants take that L. Skins still had to work hard to give the game away.
Saints beat Bucs, but still can’t stop anyone. And that ignorant rule about being able to push receivers once the QB is out of the pocket is ridiculous. Never heard that one before yesterday. Also thought you could come back in bounds and touch the ball first as long as you didn’t run out on your own. Guess it take some pretty shady rules interpretations to keep the sAints relevant.
Cowboys survive against Panthers. The Falcons schedule it supposed to be getting tougher? We have two games against these teams and neither of them looked like they really cared to win. That’s supposed to be the tough competition coming up?
Texans spank Ravens. Flacco is proving that he is what we thought he was. Not capable of winning games, and just good enough not to lose games being won by that monster defense they used to have. They are now officially pretenders. Wonder how long it will take the media to realize that. AFC North is still up for grabs and not a threat in the long run.
49er’s barely beat Seahawks. Seahawks outplayed the Niners for most of that game. Again, the Niners were considered to be a far more complete team than the Falcons. Really? The most you can say is that they have one demonstrably more efficient running back. Other than that, exactly where are they so much better then the Falcons.
Can’t see why anyone is so very distressed about the Falcons. Sure they have some flaws, some weak links, and have played down to the competition a couple of times. But really, is there an obviously superior team in the NFL? If so, I certainly haven’t seen them yet.

Just gave the blog monster a mammoth lunch. The gist of it was:
1. Parity Rules
2. Falcons are as good as any team in the league, flaws, warts and all.
3. If our schedule is supposedly getting tougher, I’m not really seeing who is supposed to be the big bullies we have to deal with down the line.

“Cock mismanagement, poor QB play, confused players, I saw it all at crunch time today . . .”
The way Matty just grabs ahold of a theme and won’t let it go, not sure we want him expounding on that first thought . . .
(Not dissing, MB, just trying to bring some levity!)

Scam Newton. “Sumptin’ gotta change Man. I don’t know what it is but it gotta’ change fast”.
Yeah, and what if it don’t? You gonna throw the biggest temper tantrum ever or are you just gonna crawl under your towel and pout ’til the unknown changes take place. Like, aren’t you included in the sumptin’?

D you are right, parity rules. I like our chances, warts and all. It appears that the real difference between teams is who can work it down the field, manage the clock, and win late, and we got that, somebody outta give the memo to Cam.
Going out expecting to dominate is not realistic, nobody can do it. The thing about parity is every team thinks they are in it and desperate at the same time, so you get a team fighting for their life.
Scam’s problem is he panics. He is 0-12 when he throws 1 pick, nor does he know how to work it down the field in crunch time. He is NFL, not for long. I called it a few weeks back.
If I were Rivera, I would bench is azz, Rivera is toast anyway, may as well have some dignity, and earn some respect, and maybe they will even win a game. That is what you do with crybabies, you show them you can win without them.

MB — Panthers screwed themselves when they picked (S)Cam / Headcase / Entertainer / Icon to put butts in the seats instead of drafting smart and dedicated football players while continuing to develop their team.

If I am RR, I call cam and had e following talk.
I am making a change, you are no longer the starting QB. You can:
A come in, work hard and prepare and be ready when the opportunity arises like every other non starter on this team.
B you can come in and sulk.
C. You can quit.
Either way, I am switching my focus to the other 52 players on the roster. I hope to see you tomorrow, but you need to decide what is best for you, not “cam”.
RR would at least go out with respect of his players who have seen non hackers since they were in peewee football. They get it. RRs career is on the line.

“I think we need somebody to step up there and take hold like a Ray Lewis does or a Tom Brady does,’’ Hurney said.
It’s a shame Hurney didn’t come right out and say Scam was not that guy. Instead he said “I think he’s certainly capable.” Meaning, Scam cost me my job, imo.

And the first thing that leader needs to do is grab cam around the throat and say, stop that stupid superman crap, your the QB, you need to be on the sidelines looking at photos of the defense, not dancing around like a clown.
