Atlanta Falcons: Birds Edge Past Redskins to 5-0

5-0 for First Time in Franchise History

Huge Hit by Spoon (Evan Vucci)

The Atlanta Falcons weren’t pretty, but they got the job done yet again on the road, coming from behind, and finding a way to win. The offense looked out of sync for almost the entire game, the defense had major problems with the run and even gave up a first career touchdown pass to a brand new rookie in Kirk Cousins, but nonetheless, the Falcons found a way to win the game and got it done when it really counted. And by the way, the Atlanta Falcons are 5-0 for the first time in franchise history and they have plenty areas for improvement. They may have “sucked” as Roddy White jokingly said after the game, but they’re also undefeated. A look at the Birds road win in DC………

An Ugly Win Always Beats a Pretty Loss

It marks the second week the Falcons have looked less than stellar and had to make a comeback in the 4th quarter to win the game, but an ugly win beats a pretty loss, or as some call them “moral victories,” every day of the week. The offense slogged around the first half, throwing a pick-six in the process, and the defense got gashed by the run and torched by a brand new rookie QB, but the Falcons buckled down when they had to. Matt Ryan led the offense to score 17 points in the 4th quarter and the defense came back from their awful blown coverage TD to Cousins to steal two interceptions in a row to close out the game. If they Falcons continue their overall subpar performances, than it’ll be a cause for concern, but for now their finding ways to win, and they’re only one of two teams that are undefeated, by the way.

Run Defense a Concern

The Ageless Wonder (Susan Walsh)

Cam Newton almost racks up 100 yards himself and 6th round draft pick rookie steams to 114 rushing on Sunday. The Birds are doing a great job in the pass game and takeways, but are showing some weaknesses and vulnerabilities in the run game. The Falcons are currently ranked 27th against the run and will face plenty of strong running teams as the season goes along. In particular, the defensive tackles and middle linebacker play seem to be giving up large amounts of yards. Jerry, Babineaux, and Walker are excellent getting penetration against the pass, but seem to be wearing some vs. the run. Akeem Dent is having major issues at middle linebacker (more below) and that’s putting more and more pressure on the outside linebackers, safeties, and cornerbacks. It should be said that the Falcons are 7th against the pass, but they need to stiffen up against the run a little bit.

Gonzo the Great

Did someone say Tony Gonzalez is supposedly retiring this year? It appears that the 36 year old is on track for one of his best seasons yet. Gonzo hauled in 123 yards with a touchdown and is tied for 3rd overall with 4 touchdowns (among all wide receivers) and 15th in yards including all wide receivers (1st among tight ends). He is surely benefitting from teams trying their best to keep both Julio Jones and Roddy White in check and Koetter is happy to oblige him with the targets. Many teams have talented receiving corps, but few have the additional talent at tight end to occupy the middle with authority the way Gonzalez does. No one is surprised at what he does anymore and he’s playing like he just came into the league. Looking forward, the Falcons and their fans are starting to realize how big the hole will be at TE when he leaves.

Enough with the “Offensive Linemen as Tight End” Mess

Fans and the Bird Cage faithful were ready to toss anything they could get their hands on at the TV seeing Joe Hawley, Mike Johnson, and Garrett Reynolds go out for passes, line up as a 3rd tight end, or doing anything other than blocking on the line (Reynolds illegal man downfield was an accident, but still). What in the Hades is going on here? Some thought the first pass to Joe Hawley (he’s a center remember?) was just an accident, but when it happened again, it bordered somewhere in between being nauseous and bewilderment. Seeing Hawley trying to catch the ball was akin to seeing him in a tutu on a highwire.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan congratulates wide receiver Julio Jones on his touchdown during the second half of an NFL football game in Landover, Md., Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)

JJ Back in the Groove (Susan Walsh)

The Falcons are struggling at fullback in losing Bradie Ewing in the first preseason game and not having Lousaka Polite active this week, but having Hawley or others go out for passes with all the talent available is just criminal. Mike Johnson has been playing a lot of 3rd tight end roles lately which brings up another point: if Tyson Clabo is needing that much extra help in blocking, why is he still in there? Every time Johnson or Hawley are in as an extra lineman, that’s taking out guys like Harry Douglas, Jacquizz Rodgers, Jason Snelling, or even Kevin Cone and Drew Davis. Very, very puzzling and strange.

Julio Back in the Groove

Another game, another big drop early in the game. The Falcons had a huge play drawn up where Ryan hit Julio Jones on a nice deep ball right at the end zone only to see him drop another big one. Fans were starting to get anxious after seeing Jones struggle the last few games, mainly with drops. Could so much talent not explode as everyone thought? The good news is that Ryan and Koetter kept feeding Jones the ball and he looked like the stud we’ve all come to know in the very short time he’s been in red and black. He helped the offense drive down the field with excellent routes, good catches, and his signature extra effort to get more yards. He capped it off with a dazzling touchdown catch where he adjusted to a sidline pass, snagged it, and kept his feet in for the score. Great to have you back JJ!

Issues at MLB

Akeem Dent is struggling mightily at middle linebacker. There’s really no other way to spin it. He looked lost, had weak instincts, overran plays, missed tackles, and was blocked with ease. Even though some are bringing up the B word already after many thought he was a big reach for the 3rd round, it may be a little premature for that. To be fair, Dent hasn’t had a ton of snaps since Nolan is a fan of the big nickel and he’s only a few games into his first starting year. Sean Weatherspoon didn’t look that great as a rookie himself. Dent also has undergone some serious changes the last 4 years, going from a 4-3 defense under Willie Martinez as a junior at UGA to the 3-4 as a senior under Todd Grantham back to a 4-3 under Brian Van Gorder and finally to a new scheme, more of a hybrid, under Mike Nolan. He is, after all, from a Mark Richt led Georgia team well-known for under-developing their players (see that Justin Houston is top 5 in sacks and Blair Walsh is on fire in Minnesota). Also, Dimitroff did sign Lofa Tatupu in a great low-risk, potentially high-reward move before he was injured.

However, defending Dent can only go so far and he can only get so much time to improve. At what point will Mike Peterson get brought back in or Kroy Biermann get a permanent move to LB (a very popular idea here in the Cage). This much is a lock: linebacker moves to the top of the 2013 draft board.

These Falcons Have Some Mettle

Can an OL play QB Next? (Evan Vucci)

On one hand, the Falcons have had two performances that are easy to forget, playing an opponent that is decent-to-good, but surely not great or elite. However, the Falcons have proven the last two weeks that they can find ways to win even if they’re not playing their best. At some point, this will start being an issue instead of a strength, but for now, they’ve won two games in a row down at various points in the game.

What’s Up with the Drops?

The drops are starting to add up and it’s not that big of deal just yet, but something to be looking out for moving forward. Julio dropped a potential long touchdown catch, Quizz dropped an easy screen/dump-off, and then there was Joe Hawley dropping two catches….oh wait, he’s a center running passing routes like a receiver, but surely that can’t be right? In all seriousness, the Falcons need to start locking up the easy catches when they get a chance and eliminate as many drops as possible.

Defense Had RG3 Hemmed Up Anyway

Even though it wasn’t as much as expected, there are surely some who think that the game may have been different if RG3 hadn’t got injured and left the game, but just like forcing Peyton Manning into his interceptions, the Falcons defense brought the wood to him when he pulled the ball down and started to run. Also, the Birds did an excellent job keeping him hemmed up even before the injury. The Falcons defense held him to 91yards passing and only 7 yards rushing in the 3rd quarter. Overall, the Falcons defense pretty much shut down the rookie QB.

5-0 Feels So Good

Mike Smith, Thomas Dimitroff, and Arthur Blank just keep on knocking down those walls. The newest one is getting to 5-0 for the first time in franchise history, which doesn’t mean too awful much to being so early in the season, but it’s been a great start to the campaign and bodes well for the Falcons and their fans going forward.

Your Turn

1) Opening Kickoff: what’s your overall thoughts on the Falcons win?

2) How concerned over rush defense?

3) Do you think Gonzalez is rethinking his retirement after all?

4) What object were readying to throw after the Hawley passes?

5) Please explain the “Extra OL as 3rd TE” mess, if you can.

6) Is Julio back after a few missteps in games?

7) What’s your thoughts on Akeem Dent, MLB overall?

8.) Are the comeback wins a sign of mettle or slowing down?

9) Are the drops starting to worry you?

10) What do you like about your 5-0 Falcons?

11) What worries you most about your 5-0 Falcons?

JB FALCON-For someone that didn’t know exactly how to respond, you certainly did one helluva job responding. Man, you don’t know how much better I feel right now. I just needed to get it out there rather than bottling it up, and to hear another perspective, which COOP so graciously provided.

My sister ran across a class C motorhome that was for sale way below market value, and made an impulse cash purchase. She was so excited that she couldn’t stop talking about it. Therefore, I started doing some research and thinking about all of the possibilities and the ultimate freedom it would bring.

Instead of riding around the circle or perimeter, or inside or outside of it, I could expand the circle or perimeter to include the entire country. Believe it or not, one of my main concerns was not being able to pickup my Falcons and Hawks. But after further research, I found that you can get mobile Direct TV. I’m still debating on whether to go with Solar panels, a wind turbine, or both.

It said that solor panels are almost useless in the Pacific Northwest, and I definitely want to spend some time exploring that area of the country. If I’m going to make the RV my fulltime home, I do want it to be large enough to be comfortable. I think I could be happy with a 32′-34′ 5th wheeler, but I got a chance to talk with a guy that was gasing up at Walmart that had a really nice 37′ 5th wheeler.

As long as I have my music, surround sound big screen, computer, Falcons, Hawks, and the CAGE, I can take this entire country in. After surviving a serious stroke and prostate cancer, I’m ready to really try something new and different. I guess I’m really a lot like our Falcons at this point. I know what I wantand have the desire to accomplish, but I just don’t know enough about myself at this point to be totally confident in my ability to get there.

My sister would let me borrow her RV, but she can’t stand dogs which means my little Dobe Man could ride with me, and that’s totally out of the question. At 16mos old, his clownish and destinctive personality has totally won my mother over, and you know how I feel about Doberman Pinschers, with him being my 13th over the yrs.

Coach Smith,

“In terms of a head coach, there are different philosophies, but I believe in you hire an offensive coordinator, you hire a defensive coordinator, and you hire a special teams coordinator. They can devote so much more time than you can on looking at the offense, the defense, and the special teams and you allow those guys with the staff to work with the guys. I don’t believe in micro managing. I believe that you’ve got to have a back row view. When you are a position coach or a coordinator you have to have a micro view. You have to concern yourself with one thing and not really worry about anything else. I’m very fortunate that I have a great staff. Guys around me that do a great job in preparing their groups. When I started, I would never call a play on offense, never call a play on defense or special teams on game day. “

Under BVG, we were ready to toss away DeCoud and Dunta. Biermann appeared to be a bust, and Abe was getting old; plus, our DT’s were being questioned for impact. Now, we seem to have good quality players in all of them. Very interesting.

D3, nice writeup. I totally agree on your opinion of Dent. I’ve been on him for a few weeks now. In my opinion from watching the DL, our guys are consistently winning their 1 on 1 matchups and controling their gaps. The job of the MLB is to read the play and fill where needed and Dent is just nowhere to be found. He pretty much might as well not be in the game.

I’m not as keen on Beirman as some of you other guys. I see him consistently getting handled by opposing TE’s 1 on 1, particularly on running plays, and I just don’t think he has the speed for LB.

I’m definately in agreement that Atlanta will be in the market for a LB come draft time. As for this year, I’m thinking we could start to bring in another safety and let William Moore play outside linebacker on some running downs, moving Spoon to the middle.

I wonder who will have the most influence over our final roster selections, Ferry or Drew? We all know that Drew, just like Woodson, favors vets over rookies and less experienced players, especially guards. Neither HC seems to be big on developing players. That’s why we haven’t maintained any 2nd rd draft picks on our roster in several yrs now.

It’s also been established that Ferry strongly favors developing and playing younger players, which would definitely include 2nd rd picks. So, will Drew have the last say so and choose the veteran PF Tolliver over the rookie Scott, maybe the veteran SG Morrow and/or Korver over the rookie JJenkins, or the veteran C Petro over Benson?

Judging from the scouting reports, Scott seems to be a younger and less experienced version of Tolliver. Both are stretch 4s and solid rebounders. Between our designated 3pt shooters(Korver, Morrow and Jenkins), Jenkins appears to be the more consistent and versatile shooter of the 3. Deciding which player makes the active 12 man roster could be determinde by who makes the final decision, not necessarily which player performed the best during training camp and preseason.

LDrew is in a rather precarious situation. Does he go against Ferry and do what he wants to do and run the risk of not getting extended by Ferry? Or, does he go against his instincts and cater to what he knows Ferry prefers to hopefully get on his good side and get extended?

Interesting article on our run defense, which points toward failed execution, instead of scheme. Yet, I would rather teams try to beat us with the run because it takes the QB out of rhythm. Not to mention, Atlanta is doing a good job on time of possession. I really feel the defense will strive more if the Falcons score first.

I really think defending the run is overrated, unless you are dealing with a QB like Cam/RG3/Vick. I’m excited to see what Mike Nolan/Players do to adjust for Oakland. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Our offense has had more issues than our D. Don’t turn into a BVG defense that (overrated) blocks the run well. Like that matters versus teams like the Saints, Green Bay, Giants, Cowboys, and Patriots. Our only weakness with be the 49ers, Ravens, and Philly, IMHO.

On the bright side, Oakland averages around 68 yards on the ground per game. Playing them should allow us to try some different techniques for run blocking. I think the FO is looking further down the road when we face better running teams.

It looks like we will have Lousaka Polite back in the line up as he didn’t appear on the injury report this week. Michael Palmer will not be back giving us just two true TEs on the active roster. It will be interesting to see if they still try to do something with the “Tackle Eligible” out in pass patterns, as a decoy as they have shown a willingness to go that route in the last couple of games.

I would love to see them use Harry Douglas more in the game plan this week and get him on film more to give teams in upcoming weeks another thing for which they have to prepare. Harry is used more to clear out space for our other WRs and I think teams my be overlooking him. Right now, it’s pick your poison with the passing game and it would be nice to add some cyanide for them to worry about. Go Falcons ! ! !

stats wise, the “best of the NFL” list is littered with Falcons – all of our key skills guys on offense are on the top Ryan is #2; Gonzo leads in catches, along with Julio and Roddy; Gonzo and Julio lead in scoring (topish); so, you would think with all this passing, our running would be in the dumps – not really, pretty high there too. We have a dynamic attack – when harnessed. I really liked what I saw that first game. The D played out of this world against Peyton and SD. Ryan lead a comback against Caroline & the Skins. Contributions from the entire team. Sweet.

Sounds like an excuse for poor execution. I have it on good authority from people much smarter than any of us that schemes, playbooks, and playcalling don’t exist or have no bearing on outcome…only execution. Maybe you should have Mr. Rourke teach DMC about fantasy execution :) .

BIG LOU-I agree with the idea that our failures in run DEF are the result of poor execution rather than scheme. If you review the gms, or can remember those running plays, you’ll notice we’ve usually had players in position to make the play, but they just didn’t effectively fight off their blocks. We also have to accept some concessions in our run DEF, since we don’t traditionally utilize a MLB on most downs.

If that is true he could have spared many headaches by making that quote sooner. Of course, getting rid of MM a year earlier would have proved that outright in a much more convincing fashion. I’m more worried about Koetter than Smitty, and I’m not really worried about Koetter just yet. Since we can’t do pictures here, this link ( http://boards.atlantafalcons.com/topic/3958354-atlanta-adjustment-to-double-coverage/ ) and thread does a good job of showing what I was getting testy about last game. some folks just have that controlling attitude. OK; I’m officially worried – anybody got contact with Big Ray? The article and quote from smith on ESPN mag was nice; but then I read past the Falcon story, and it started looking mighty NE Connecticut stupid. Gee, is it surprising that Doctors and Researchers discovered a potential connection between chronic (and in the past, most likely untreated) concussions and cerebral problems later in life? Do folks think that the NFL has a cadre of medical researches on staff 24/7? The NFL is not the federal gov’t – they cant just print up some dough, hire some highly degreed professionals and still retain profitability. Selah. Asinine idealism. However, anybody shocked that playing professional football could possibly cause long term health problems, cranial and other? It is called assumed risk. And, in the NFL, it is quite high. I would not want 3 or 4 300 pound + guys chasing me and then ALL landing on me; heck, even 1 – who most likely is FASTER than I, would provide all I need to know about potential risk.
