Atlanta Falcons: Birds Escape vs. Panthers

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and tight end Tony Gonzalez celebrate a 30-28 victory over the Carolina Panthers to remain undefeated at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday , Sept. 30, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

No Caption Needed (AJC)

It was an ugly, ugly win, but the Atlanta Falcons stayed perfect with their come from behind win against the division rival Panthers. Even though it wasn’t pretty, the Falcons showed some serious resolve in finding a way to win when they weren’t playing their best. The bottom line is that the Falcons are 4-0 and they beat a division rival primed for a good game after being embarrassed on Thursday Night Football and having 10 days to prepare for them. A look at the miraculous win…………

Matty Ice

It’s been said a million times over, but the cool-as-ice quarterback willed his team to win against absolutely impossible odds. Having to drive 99 yards in less than a minute with no timeouts is the stuff legends are made of. Backing up to the end of his endzone, he chunked the ball 60-65 yards in the air and Roddy White made a huge catch. He engineered the drive against impossible odds and this one has to rank up there with one of the best. The guy is taking the step before our eyes and did all this despite getting beat to death and sacked 7 times.

Roddy Clutch

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White goes up for a long reception over Carolina Panthers safety Haruki Nakamura (center) and cornerback Josh Norman setting up the winning field goal for a 30-28 victory in the final minute of the game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday , Sept. 30, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Roddy Clutch (AJC)

Julio Jones has gotten a lot of the hype about the next great wide receiver, but Roddy White is the one who to turn to when you need to make a play. Julio Jones has gotten the TD catches to date, but Roddy finally got both the yards, touchdowns, and huge plays. Not only did he help rescue the game with his amazing catch, he also had a fantastic touchdown catch where he had to adjust mid-air to haul in the pass. Jones may be the future,

The Second Matty Ice

Enough can’t be said about someone who may get overlooked on an offense loaded with weapons and that’s Matt Bryant. Matt Ryan already has the Matty Ice nickname, but Matt Bryant has been absolutely money in clutch situations since he’s been here. Luckily, he hasn’t been needed for a game-winning field goal until Sunday, but making those unbelievable comeback drives mean nothing if your kicker can’t finish the deal.

The OL Nightmare Returns

Was it just a mirage or was there some credence to the offensive line actually looking better in the first 3 games? Right now, statistics have to fall on the side of it being just one bad game against a very hungry defense. And maybe it had something to do with the Panthers scheme seeing something in their 10 days of preparation to confuse Ryan and the offense. But this much is certain: it was a complete nightmare on Sunday, leading to 7 sacks and bringing all those bad feelings about the offensive line roaring back in terrible fashion. Ryan was sacked almost double in one game (7 sacks) that he had in the first three (4).

Sam Baker has always been the lightning rod of criticism, but the left side of the line is doing OK with Baker having a good year and Blalock always being the solid rock with little to no issues. The problem, as many all knew, was the right side of the OL. It comes from a somewhat surprising place in Tyson Clabo. To be sure, Garrett Reynolds is getting the job done but is surely not dominant in the least and still doesn’t project as a long-term option. Clabo has given up a majority of the sacks this year all on his own and has looked downright terrible all year, going back to preseason. Maybe it’s his age catching up or maybe he’s just missing a solid force next to him at right guard, but he’s simply not getting the job done. They made a change with Sam Baker last year, how long will they give Clabo? Lamar Holmes looked just fine in preseason and many Cage members would love to see Clabo move inside to RG (where his size could potentially dominate) and Reynolds move back to his old natural position of right tackle. Todd McClure hasn’t been the worst, but he had some problems on Sunday, as many fans thought would happen as the season wore on. Is the nightmare here to stay or was it just one bad game?

Time for an OL Change?

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Peria Jerry tackles Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart with the defense swarming for a short gain in the final minutes of the game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday , Sept. 30, 2012. CURTIS COMPTON / CCOMPTON@AJC.COM

Gotta Stop the Run Better (AJC)

As mentioned above, the offensive line has to get the benefit of the doubt so far in that they did a pretty good job in the first three weeks (even though their run blocking was weak). However, how long will the coaching staff give this OL before a change is made? Last year, Sam Baker got some opportunities in different spots but was yanked in favor of Will Svitek and Joe Hawley, respectively. Same goes for Garrett Reynolds. As fans discussed in the preseason, the likelihood was very great that the same offensive line with so many problems in 2011, would start exactly the same in 2012, with literally no changes made. Sure enough, that’s been the case. If this becomes a trend, fans will at least want to see something change on the OL, including getting looks at Peter Konz and Lamar Holmes, and maybe moving Clabo inside to right guard?

Worries at LB

The Panthers exploited one of the Falcons biggest weaknesses in defending the run. The option-give that Newton did was hard for the Birds to stop. Their outside linebackers, Sean Weatherspoon and Stephen Nicholas, have been outstanding, but they’ve operated mostly in the nickel defense. The base 4-3 defense include middle linebacker Akeem Dent and he didn’t have the best of days on Sunday. It’s way too early to make a call on Dent and his future since he’s basically a rookie getting his first live snaps, but it does need to be addressed. Throw in the fact that the Falcons are razor thin at linebacker anyway and it may be time to take a look at one of the defensive ends, like Kroy Biermann, at OLB, allowing Spoon or Nicholas to move inside.

Trap Game or Cause for Slight Concerns?

This game had trap written all over it. The Falcons were flying high. The Panthers were humiliated on national TV. Their sophomore Super(interception)Man was called out. The Panthers had 10 full days to prepare for the Falcons. The Birds had a short week in traveling back from the west coast. It may not have been a trap game, but the Falcons surely weren’t at their best and the Panthers knew the importance. On the positive side, the Falcons won a game ugly and that’s all that matters.

However, potentially on the negative side, as longtime Bird Cage member Unca’ Bob said, we may be benefitting from a pretty easy spot of the schedule. We’ve played and won 4 games, but 3 of them have been against the roundly considered weak AFC West. The other was against an NFC South team with 2 losses to show, one of them being a blowout. You can’t control your schedule and the Falcons have won the only games they’ve played, but this game brought many fans back to Earth a little bit and realized there are a ton of areas to improve upon.

Turner the Stud

Falcons running back Michael Turner breaks free for a first down past Carolina Panthers James Anderson, right, and Captain Munnerlyn during the first half at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday , Sept. 30, 2012.

Turner the Stud (AJC)

Often beleaguered Falcons running back is showing an rebirth the last two weeks with excellent performances against San Diego and Carolina Panthers. Turner has made some fans (heavily including this author) to eat some major crow. And it will happily be done. Turner may not be the best fit for the offense going forward, but he’s still a major cog on this team filled with explosive offensive weapons.

Sometime You Have to Win Ugly

The title says it all and an ugly win is better than the prettiest of losses or as some call them “moral victories.” The Falcons played their worst football of the year in all aspects and they met a team playing with a major hunger knowing the importance and having plenty of time to prepare. The Falcons found a way to win and that’s a testament to this team’s character in finding ways to win and special seasons are made up of those.

LOL, nothing but love for them, D3. Could not have become what I was without the professionalism, the commitment, and the love of the teachers in the Thomasville City Schools. Luv ‘em and I let them know it when I see them now…..

Snack, I will glad to see him added to that rotation. Looking forward to him and Hip Hip as the pressure points opposite a true BIG MAN in 2013 as I hope we move to the 3-4.

Yes, I am getting rid of both Abe and Edwards as I move to the 3-4. Details in a future posting in the offseason before the 2013 draft.

Paddy O…

It is becoming more and more obvious each day that we let the wrong guy leave. But it is what it was. We now need to acknowledge that there is a situation that needs addressing on the right side of the Falcons offensive line.

Simply put, in the eyes of the TeePee, at this particular moment, we are playing with hell’s fire each time MR2 drops back to pass. I pray that the Angel that is Sarah B continues to keep her eyes on him and her protecting arms around him. If not, and God forbid, we are in DEEP trouble.

Key to the game Sunday. Rush defense.

Right now, Washington is doing a fine job with its rushing attack. Meanwhile, the Falcons have one of the league’s worse rush defenses. No my words…simple facts….the league stats support it.

If Shanahan and Co. can control the clock with the rushing game as well as a strong intermediate passing presence, one that does not put RG3 into pressing situations, this game has the potential to be just as close as what we saw this past Sunday.

SeminoleWarrior

October 5th, 2012

By the same token, the Falcons are not really facing a defense that is really, in MHO, threatening. The Redskins are suspect in pass defense so the intermediate game could be a blessing. Also, the ability to pressure the QB has been even more suspect for the ‘Skins this season to date.

The second point may be a blessing for an ATL OL whose right side can’t wait to get to the bye week and get healthy or whatever the hell it needs to get its focus intact.

“Nolan’s more successful packages drafted that key MLB presence as he moved around the league. Especially in his 3-4 schemes. The Jets drafted Marvin Jones and Bryan Cox. The Ravens drafted Ray Lewis. The 49ers drafted Ray Lewis. And when ATL moves to the 3-4 next season, which they should, they will draft an interior linebacker that will bring immediate presence OR they wil acquire a young FA 3-4 stud that will be the cornerstone for an interior defensive overhaul.” ……SW

Ooops. Major mistake. The 49ers, under Nolan, did not draft Ray Lewis as we all know. They took the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Patrick Willis. Yeah, that Patrick Willis. The dude we passed on for some ione hit wonder guy from Arkansas named Anderson.

The SAME 2007 draft, the one in which we had 11 picks, and let such names as Darrelle Revis, Jon Beason, Dwayne Bowe, Joe Staley, and Ryan Kalil get away.

But it was the year, 2007, in which the fraud in the front office was exposed. Petrino and McKay. Enuf said.

A lot of this makes sense to me.

The part about Ryan holding the ball too long makes sense, too…if you pay attention closely to what is being said. When an aggressive defense comes up on your “short pass” plays, then you WILL hold the ball too long…or you’ll throw it away or throw an INT. Those are pretty much your choices.

It’s funny how if Ryan throws it away, folks would say he looked just like he did last year and the year before. Yet if he throws a pick, it’s his fault, and if he holds the ball too long, then he’s the one screwing up the offense. Ain’t that freakin’ simple.

Beyond that, two things really stood out to me about this article:

1) Koetter impresses me with doing something Mularkey never did – understanding, recognizing, and holding himself accountable for his contribution to the problem. He pretty much said it wasn’t just the O-line, he didn’t call the right plays against the right coverages at times, and didn’t provide enough help protection.

How refreshing. Because, a guy who says this is a guy who makes adjustments as the game goes along, as the season goes along, as you get into high gear. This gives us a chance to succeed where we have failed before.

2) Justin Blalock and Todd McClure showing the right attitude and some leadership qualities. I was tired of Tyson Clabo quotes anyway….

SW ,

Made it out of the hospital yesterday morning, around 1000 hrs my friend. Been home since, with my wonderful wife trying to take care of my every need (I’m a strong and stubborn guy, so it’s been a slight struggle, LOL).

I see you are STILL on fire….keep it up.

I’m with you on Nolan and some personnel changes. I hope so fervently that we go to a 3-4 defense. The potential is SO much better, especially with our existing personnel. You only have to draft certain kinds of DL players, and there are always more LBs to pick from that can be developed and fit into your schemes.

You’re dead-on about the game against Washington. Stop the run and we have a shot. Don’t stop the run, and we’re either in a shoot out or going for our first loss of the season, one way or another. Doesn’t get any simpler than that…

I’m very ready to see Corey Peters back out there. I just worry about how strong or how close to 100% he is. We need him strong . Right now we basically have a 3 man rotation at DT and while Babs and Jerry aren’t playing badly, they aren’t playing “good” either. In fact, Vance Walker is the best performing DT right now.

10 tackles and 2 sacks for Vance, and he doesn’t play as many snaps as Jerry or Babs….

In fact, here’s the story on our DL – I’ll include Biermann even though he’s playing both DL and LB:

Abe – 10 tackles, 3 sacks

Edwards – 6 tackles

Babineaux – 6 tackles, 2 sacks

Biermann – 14 tackles

Vance Walker – 10 tackles, 2 sacks

Peria Jerry – 3 tackles

Sid the Kid – 1 tackle

Cliff Matthews – 1 tackle

Damn….whatever happened to Sidbury? Injured or ineffective? And Vance Walker may or may not be a situational DT, but he is outplaying the two guys starting in front of him.

I’m not in any way concerned with Biermann’s lack of sack stats. He’s getting the tackles, and most of them are solos, not assists.

I’m looking for Clabo to bounce back this week (always the optimist) as he fully participated in practice this week, unlike previous weeks. I’m hopeful that’s an indicator that he has bounced back from the hip injury that was obviously limiting his recent effectiveness. If nothing else, they may have to slide prtections to his side to give him some help and maybe get some chips on the DE from our TEs.

It’s the other line which concerns me more, espcially against Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme. I’m confident that Nolan will have a good game plan to neutralize it but just question our ability to execute. Regardless, I think we are a better team and have the playmakers to carry us to 5-0. Go Falcons ! ! !

Hey, where has old Matt “CHOKE” Ryan been all week? Has anyone heard from him? Wow, with Matt Ryan named NFL player of the week, leading the universe in QB rating, his team undefeated, I guess there’s just not that much to criticize — especially after the way he won the Carolina game, in major CLUTCH fashion, about as far from choking as you can get.

Inevitably, though, the Falcons will have a bad game (they probably won’t go 16-0), and when they do — watch out!! Old Matt “CHOKE” Ryan will blog here every 15 minutes.

But for now — good riddance!

BL, did you get a chance to check out Star last night in the Utah/USC game?

WR

October 5th, 2012
3:31 pm

Again not able to check into the cage as much as usual but when considering this last game, one has to check in if only to give a HUGE rah rah. I don’t want the Falcons to peak to early, it would be easy to talk about them peaking considering their start, but at the same time they in my opinion they haven’t put a complete game together yet and that’s not a complaint. Defensively, there’s been a lack of real pressure, but a great job at disguising what the D is doing, I expect this area to improve.

Offensively, the birds fit the new mold of what football has become, an offense that is explosive, attacking and dictating, yes DICTATING, haven’t been able to say that in quite some time. At the same time they haven’t figured out how to really deploy the offense, considering all its weapons. Yet again I say that not as a complaint, its to acknowledge the fact that the birds are alot further alone early in the season then I thought they would be, even considering the schedule. For that matter what is consideration of the schedule, many picked SD to win the AFC West, there have been many that picked the Panthers to win the NFC South, with Manning Denver even got some extremely high expectations, and KC expectations were high until Cassel faceplanted. Who expected anything from Arizona, Seattle, Minnesota, Washington, St. Louis, and the list could go on. Strength of schedule is determined by the previous year results, and because those results change every year which is what the NFL wants, I can’t short change the Falcons, they haven’t beat up on supposedly weaker teams, they have beat up on teams that before the season started, many of the so-called experts had high expectations for, to end a long story, I’m extremely happy with the product that our Falcons are putting out there.

Paddy O / Big Lou,

BL, the Rams OL only gave up one sack to the Cardinals if I recall last night. Dahl did not surrender it.

On the opposite side, the Cardinals line was simply horrid. Everyone on that line got their ass kicked.

One more point. Recall that as he built his Tennessee Titans defense, Jeff Fisher instilled an attitude and an aggression in that unit. Are we seeing a little of that beginning to take hold in STL. Too early to tell but worth watching.

Bowden and Zook know the southeast well. They could recruit well and return Tech to respectability. And that helps the ACC as a whole in the continuous battle to “prove itself” overall.

Give them a call. They both would love to come to ATL I am sure.

Yes that includes the Vick years, with Vick, they played both bend but don’t break offense and defense and let’s hope Vick bail us out, when he was busy worrying about other business ventures. In the 90’s they had a gimmick offense and no defense, in the early 80’s they actually had pretty good offensive weapons but didn’t feel the need to protect their QB. But now, they are focused on the total package in my opinion, enjoying the ride.

“Pead will be the starter at running back next year for the Rams. Stephen Jackson has asked for and been granted the ability to opt out of the last year of his contract at the end of this season. He will be a FA next spring.” – SW

Hard to say at this point. I watched their pre-season games and they mostly tried to use Pead the same way MM tried to use JQuiz up the middle. Pead is currently behind the 7th round pick Richardson?…not a good sign that they understand the concept of not using him as a feature back. He has the size and durability to do that some but using him fulltime in that role is optimistic at best..moronic is prolly closer to the truth. Making people miss is his game not kamakazi crease squirting like the 7th round guy.
I wouldn’t break the bank trying to trade for him but if they let him go for less than the second they used that is a value win. IF, and it is for sure at his point, they were willing to entertain trade ideas I would try offloading a package of some of our “lost players” with a name guy we are going to drop for salary anyways. I would doubt it but they might go for quantity instead of being stuck with a low round pick that prolly will not excel at what they seem to want him to do.
I don’t know that we would even know what to do with him at this point. We haven’t exactly used JQuizz and Nance in the scat/ outlet pass role to a great degree yet. It is intriguing to speculate, maybe by years end some things will become clearer.

JB – i went to Chippers last game. the infield fly rule called was utter manure. chipper had a bad game, sadly – left a lot of guy on base; but, the ump did prevent him from being the last out of the game, and Freddy Freeman blasted a ground rule double – otherwise, Chipper probably would have scored. Plus, the SS and Uggla tossed in another pair of errors PLUS Ventors allowed an earned run when he tried to tag a guy at first, apparently forgot about the runner on 2nd who trucked around and scored on a bunt to first. Bad game by the braves. But, still exciting to watch Chippers last game of his career.

The Braves need another head coach…

I’m not a huge Braves fan or anything. But, that team has been talented enough for the past couple of seasons now to at least be making some decent to deep postseason runs. And in consecutive years, you allow the Cardinals to knock you out. I understand the new rule implementation (wild card sudden death) sucks, but again, there’s nothing about Gonzalez that makes you see he’s an absolute keeper. He’s replaceable. And honestly, with the amount of talent the Braves have, it’s unacceptable to not even be making it to the postseason in back to back seasons. It’s interesting if you compare th Braves to the Falcons. With the Falcons, we’ve always questioned whether it was TD’s lack of ability to get quality talent or a lack of scheme. Well, I think that questions been addressed. But, with the Braves, it’s much of the same. Do you believe they’ve got the talent to make some noise? Or do you think Frank Wren ain’t cuttin’ it. Regardless, if I was a diehard Braves fan, I’d wanna see some household changes. No tweaks. I wanna see something happen either to the roster or to the coach. Can’t allow back to back seasons go by showing an inability to get to ‘actual playoffs’ without seeing something change…

And again, no big Brave fan here, but Chipper Jones just went out like Keith Brooking (after the infamous 3rd and 16), IMO. Dude’s error cost them 3 runs.

I love the person M R is .

But I think the Bulldogs have got to have better couching and recruiting if they ever want to go any where in the SEC .

After this week and Florida beating over rated LSU the Rankings otta look soothing like this .

1 Alabama
2 FSU
3 Carolina
